Raiders go with defensive player for final pick

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, April 28th, 2012 at 3:26 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders tabbed a Penn State player in the 2012 NFL draft for the second time. This time, it’s linebacker Nathan Stupar, a 6-feet-2, 240-pounder.
Stupar wasn’t a full-time starter at Penn State. He is the kind of player who gets by more on his smarts and determination than he does with his ability, which still is somewhat impressive.
He is projected to be a dependable special teams player and solid backup, with an outside shot at developing into a starting-caliber player.
That’s fine with the Raiders. They have a need for an infusion of youth and smarts on their special teams and an opening for a backup linebacker.
Stupar played outside linebacker in college. However, he said the Raiders informed him that he will be moved inside, which means he will back up projected starter Rolando McClain from the outset.

HELL,I CAN TELL U WHO THE RAIDERS “SHOULD” HAVE TAKEN IN EVERY SINGLE DRAFT SO FAR.GIVE ME 2-3 YEARS I’LL TELL U WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN#95 AND AFTER IN 2012..

    *****

you’re quick. It takes me 5 years to know who we should have drafted 5 years earlier

  • xraided

Bergstrom will beat out Carlisle for LG. BOOK IT!

  • irjonny

BTW I might be in the minority here but i think curry is a beast and will be starter…and should be

  • Just Win Baby

This draft should be filed away as a formality. Should really count as Al Davis last draft since it still had so many of his fingerprints all over it. Next year should be the draft for which we really judge Reggie McKenzie in my opinion.

  • aig-raiders

Berg and burris may start by mid yr. Criner will see playing time. Crawford and cristo to practice squad. Stupar will see spec team action. Cristo has so much upside.

Although in his case based on the way he’s played for us.. I think that’s code for all bark and no bite

    =============

Leads the defensive line in tackles and forced holding penalties. Must be doing something right.

    ******************

I’m not saying he’s terrible. I actually think he’s played better on the inside of the line when he’s had the chance. But he’s not a playmaker..and is not much of a threat as a pass rusher. I really liked him coming out of college..i’m just tired of seeing him disappear for quarters at a time. He’s the type of player we all love…but the reality is we need better numbers from him (i know the same could be said for many of the players on our defense) u feel me?

If these guys give solid depth and special teams play then this draft would be successful.

Don’t see any of these guys becoming stars but they have their shot.

Hope all of them make the best of it.

  • morilla

Jeeeez, just watched Miles Burris senior highlights and that guy is all over the place. Love that pick up.

  • Twocents

Just Win Baby, WTF. Al Davis is dead. How are his finger prints on this draft?

That is an interesting way to look at it but RM did get about half the picks. Even next year will have our 1st or 2nd taken away for the CP trade.

  • xraided

AIG, i bet Cristo becomes a special teams ace this year!

Bergstrom will start over Carlisle week 1 if his pass protection cleans up! yes im counting on hope more than reality, but that’s part of being a raider fan!

  • 1960AutumnWind

    2 cents
    Fingerprints:
    Aaron Curry for a 7th
TP for a 3rd in Supplemental
Barksdale and Jones for a 2nd
    Campbell for a 4th

As for Hue – A 1st this year and conditional 2nd next year for CP.

  • JONTRAIN

I think if Reg can somehow pluck one proven starting CB from the annual training camp cap casulaties…I will feel pretty comfortable heading into the season.

    137 & 50, you’re both the Mr. irrelevant of this year’s draft.

So, piss off the both of you. . .

These assessments were before they even played a down. . .but that means nothing to idiots like the noth of you. . .general comments about people you don’t know.

Not puffing out my chest; merely responding to generalities formulated by your own angst. . .have a nice life. . .

Yep, can’t wait till pre season. Great pick.

  • xraided

if our 2nd turns into a 1st round pick given up for CP, then mission accomplished by Hue Jackson! tell me i’m wrong!

  • JONTRAIN

Watched Youtube of Burris…no pass coverage on his highlights. That worries me.

  • Al_is_theraiders

    burriss looks great…against the mwc.

  • Twocents

Okay, I get that. We were screwed because Al mortgaged the future. But the picks in this years draft are McKenzies. Not the ghost of Al.

  • Hot Shot

Every player who gets drafted is a hit or miss no mater who or where their drafted at.Some pan out some don’t.Just the way it is.

    First UDFA signing:

    Oakland Raiders
Marqutte King, P, Fort Valley State

  • JONTRAIN

LOL…”have a nice life”??? Are u leaving forever? (say yes!!!)

I have no angst sir. I understand ur assessments were before they played a down. That was implied. You, like us, have been right…and wrong..in the past. Join the club.

Lemme say this for the third time: Grading a draft right after it’s over is idiotic. And a waste of time. That’s all I was saying.

“merely responding to generalities formulated by your own angst”

…see now that doesn’t even make sense LOL

  • xraided

ohh nice! there’s the backup punter! haha!

Boy, Raiders get absolutely no mention in regard to anything on NFLN.

Raiders ARE still in the NFL right?

Seems since Al has left us we have descended into non-existent status.

Kinda strange since we won the “Best Team Ever” fan popularity contest on NFL.COM.

Seems like Al Davis (for good or bad) was the only thing the national media found interesting about the Raiders.

I’m not looking for Raider praise (it’d be nice i admit) but more looking for their legitimate “take” on whats going on with us.

It’s obvious they don’t even care enough to try and figure out what’s up with us.

All the analyzing is based on what they hear 3rd hand I guess.

We have truly become the leagues irrelevant franchise.

Al’s gone so who cares about us anymore.

    Thanks

181…my biggest fear this team has become “normal.”

  • CanuckRaider

How refreshing to see the trolls (or is it troll?) are back…@#167: You’re the tool…That’s the extent of my interest in you.
Like what Reggie did with the limited picks we had…Bergstrom, Burris and Criner have good shots as starters or backups…a couple more might push for special teams time…Still UDFAs and later cuts to come.

  • Al_is_theraiders

181…my biggest fear this team has become “normal/average”.

  • Hardline

I am no more impressed with the 1st rounders than the 7th rounders, and never have been.

To me Andrew Luck is now an overpaid schlub. Remember when praises were sung about Matt Lienart, and Sanchez?? I watched many Stanford games and thought Luck was mediocre.

The rest of the 1st rounders are probably underperformers in the NFL too.

Let’s hear it for the late rounders and may the 1st rounders all be out of the league within 3 yrs.

  • YoungAmerican

Next up: Aaron Henry, S, Wisconsin. Very good UDFA signing there.

  • http://000 Bob Marley

    Stuff on Nathan Stupar:

    “Strengths:

    •Good speed
    •Solid overall athleticism
•Shows well in coverage, particularly zone
    •Good hands and ball skills
    •Solid tackler
    •Extensive special teams experience
    •Hard worker, improved every year
    •Good blitzer
•High football IQ, academic All-Big Ten Honoreee
    •Good instincts
•Blue collar player, great motor that never stops running
    •NFL pedigree

    Weaknesses:

    •Undersized
    •Can get engulfed by lineman
•Only started seven games in his career
•Can take poor angles at times
    •Struggles to get off blocks
•Will sometimes gear up too fast and overpursue
•Little to no experience in man coverage

Nathan Stupar is the next in a long line of Penn State linebackers looking to make a name for himself in the NFL.

Stupar is a solid overall athlete that comes from an athletic family with NFL pedigree.

His grandfather played football at Tennessee, his father and three uncles played at Penn State. One of his uncles is Jeff Hostetler, former Raiders Pro Bowl QB. Brother, Jonathan, is a TE that played at UVA and spent 2008-2010 with the Bills and is currently a free agent.

Stupar only started seven games in his career, as a senior following an injury, but he had extensive playing time as part of a rotation of linebackers as a junior and senior.

Stupar was the nickel linebacker for much of his career and has experience dropping into coverage and blitzing.

He improved every season and was good enough to catch NFL scouts eyes with a combine invite.

Stupar is best suited to play weakside linebacker in a 4-3 in the NFL.

At worst, he should be a core special teams player and solid backup/nickel linebacker in the NFL but if he continues to improve, he has the natural skills and athleticism to develop into a starter in the NFL.

Stupar’s best fit would be with a team that runs a 4-3 base looking for a boost in special teams that needs a backup WILL like Chicago, Philadelphia, or Detroit.”

    —————————————————

    From a Pats site:

“He’s starting to rise and really helped himself at the combine.

He posted a very solid forty yard dash time of 4.75 seconds. But, it was the agility drills where he really turned heads. Nathan was able to post the fastest 3 Cone drill of any LB at 6.84 seconds. He also posted top 5 times in the 60 yard shuttle, and looked fluid and agile in LB drills.

Stupar was very happy with his performance calling it “an honor just to be invited, I was happy with my time, but know I can run faster”.

Stupar is another player to watch as the draft gets closer. At the very least he will be able to make a roster and contribute right away as a core special teams player. Like he did at Penn State, Stupar will likely work his way up the roster and find a way to make an impact on the defense.”
