Raiders going extra mile for Oakland public schools
By Steve Corkran
Saturday, April 28th, 2012 at 11:09 am in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders chief executive Amy Trask visited the media room a short time ago to hand deliver the news that 10 percent of gross proceeds from new season-ticket sales from May 1-June 30 will be given to the Oakland Unified School District.
“We are thrilled to announce our newest youth and community-based initiative and we are delighted to assist the Oakland Unified School District,” Trask said in a press release.
Quite a gesture from the Raiders, to say the least. It’s even more impressive when you consider the Raiders are donating 10 percent of the gross proceeds before the NFL takes its 34 percent cut.

From Greg Cossell, NFL films:
Diamonds in the rough.
Miles Burris:
The San Diego State linebacker was one of my favorite players to watch on tape. I loved his intense, urgent playing style.
He primarily aligned outside on the right, almost always in a two-point stance, but was at times utilized as a movable chess piece all over the defense.
Burris was not a quick-twitch, sudden athlete, but he played with balance, body control and play speed. He was more of a speed/power rusher than a bend-the-edge/quickness rusher.
I’m struggling to transition him to a specific position in the NFL.
Can he be a rush linebacker? He might be too small, and lack flexibility and burst off the edge. Is he a strong-side linebacker in a 4-3 base defense? A middle linebacker?.
I don’t know yet, but Burris will play in the NFL.

Dakota,
was laughing at that last night.
Kell must be coming unglued.
Again, Reggie is putting together a MC Grand Master Flash O-line (White Lines)

Good work Amy and the Raiders!!
Burris!!!

Burris!!!

Great article on Mile Burriss:
“Miles Burris officially bench-pressed 225 pounds 31 times at the NFL scouting combine, good for third-best among all linebackers. Unofficially? Thirty-four reps. And that would’ve been second. His last three didn’t count since he lifted his rear off the bench.
Still, this exercise may not be a true indicator of how strong Burris is.
“At 225, compared to what I can bench, that’s really not one of my strengths,” he said. “I’ve benched 455 before. For somebody that can bench that much, I probably should be able to do a little more on the reps.”
He’s strong and he can jump. Burris’ vertical leap of 37 1/2″ ranked fourth at his position.
The week in Indianapolis was a glimpse at Burris’ versatility.
San Diego State’s defense required him to play both the inside and outside positions.
Thus, Burris believes he can play any LB position in a 4-3 or 3-4 scheme. The Aztecs have produced five NFL linebackers the last seven years. Burris is next in line.
While his lack of experience in man coverage hurts his stock, the 245-pounder’s ability to handle different positions could warrant a mid-round selection.
“For me, I pride myself on football knowledge,” said Burris, who had 72 tackles and eight sacks last season.
“I have a pretty good understanding of the game — of coverages and where people fit. It’s on to me, when I get into a camp, to get into the playbook and try to not only understand the position they’re going to have me in but the overall concept of the defense and why people do what they do.”
Burris did meet with the Green Bay Packers in Indianapolis and could be an option.
“With the Packers, I’m not sure what my role would be with them but I did talk with them at the Combine,” he said.
“I really do believe I can play any linebacker spot in a 4-3 or a 3-4.”
At his pro day, he ran a 4.67 in the 40 and was in the 6.80-6.85 range in the three-cone drill prompting Burris to do a backflip in excitement.
Burris had been an inside linebacker his whole life before this past season, when coaches moved him to the outside. Above all, he plays with tenacity and strength. In addition to his 455-pound bench, Burris has also squatted 650 pounds.
The concern? Coverage.
Burris admits he never had to play much man coverage in college.
The scheme called for him to play inside and outside, but he didn’t have to match up on tight ends in space.
Considering NFL offenses are built on finding mismatches — especially with bigger, faster, stronger tight ends — he’ll need to improve this part of his game.
However, he does say his weight-room strength does help on the field. He shouldn’t be overwhelmed.
“Shedding blocks is where I notice it the most,” Burris said.
“When a big guy tries to engage you, you can give them that pop and separate. You have the strength to grab on and stroll off at the end. It has definitely worked for me.”

April 28th, 2012 at 11:16 am
Reading about Miles Burris, he reminds of Teddy Bruschi in terms of size, skills and versatility.
He can probably contribute right away as an edge rusher on passing situations as he develops his overall game into a starter, somewhere.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:16 am
I trust what the org is doing.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:16 am
If Reggie didn’t want Chapman and enough GM’s in the league passed on him 4 times it’s enough to be suspicious that the knee is right or ever will be right. We have 5 picks and Reggie is being careful to get 5 potential starters….at least maximize his chances.
It would be different if we had a boatload of picks. Reggie’s picking guys who like to play football.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:17 am
Clear to me that Reggie is determined to use his limited number of picks on players that can’t miss this year — noone recovering from injury or projects, even if huge upside. So far two players that can compete to start this year and seem certain as first backup if don’t make it into the starting lineup. Don’t think he had any choice with so few picks at his disposal.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:17 am
I can’t believe Norman is still falling- keep falling makes the chance for a trade out better and better…
April 28th, 2012 at 11:18 am
And whoever brought up the subject of if they are black or white is clueless. It aint about color of your skin.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:18 am
I think we can get Fangupo or NJB at #168
I like Sammy Brown, Cam Johnson or Massaquoi with this pick!!
April 28th, 2012 at 11:18 am
I get very suspicious when an injured player’s agent says, “Oh, that knee will be ready to go by Training Camp, no problem.”
Apparently, I’m not the only one.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:19 am
It’s a great day. Can we please not talk about race and politics.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:19 am
Hmm…which D player is more scheme diverse between Mossaquio, Johnson, Winn, Manning?
Or does McK look best offensive player on the board like Jones or Polk?
April 28th, 2012 at 11:19 am
I love RM draft strategy so far…
This guy Burris is a player… Mean, high motor LB… never would Al David picked a guy like that…
Welcome to the new raiders…
Gotta love it.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:20 am
Josh Norman to Carolina
April 28th, 2012 at 11:20 am
Great political ploy from Amy, to butter up the local politicians and attempt to create some community goodwill in case a public financing measure for a stadium goes to the ballot.
Well played Raiders.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:20 am
Watch Chapman anchor that Colts defense for years.
No worries, though. Raiders can focus on NT next year. Several very good players will be available at that position.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:20 am
Cam Johnson should be the pick
April 28th, 2012 at 11:20 am
Wow I bet the Panthers had Burris ahead of Marshall on their board. I don’t think he would of lasted till 13th in the 5th.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:20 am
who is andy kaufman? All i know is athletic ability trumps effort every time….if you don’t know…we’ll just leave it at that.

April 28th, 2012 at 11:21 am
I love this Burris kids demeanor. You can tell by the film on him he likes violence and collisions. He enjoys mixing it up. High motor & high effort. I think this guy will kick Ro’s ass in TC if he halfasses it and jogs.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:21 am
Yeah, if anything Fangupo can be had at #168 possibly.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:21 am
There is a chance that Chapman will recover and become good. It is just that there is a better chance he becomes the Chaz Shillens of NT’s and we just don’t need that right now.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:21 am
Burris is an aggressive guy who sometimes overplays.
Smart, aggressive guy who loves football.
There was speculation that the dischargers wanted him.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:22 am
Norman off the board
April 28th, 2012 at 11:22 am
This is a refreshing draft, even though we didn’t even get a pick until the last pick of the third.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:22 am
Bills got Zebrie Sanders.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:23 am
Massaquoi or Winn at 148, guys!
April 28th, 2012 at 11:23 am
David Shaw is a very bright guy. Might be a good potential NFL head coach in the future.
April 28th, 2012 at 11:23 am

This year, I have Kheeston RAndle.
Let’s do this again!!!

Ten per cent of gross will donated by the Raiders to the Oakland USD?!
That’s a great move by the Raiders.

MASSAQUOI AT 148. Come on Reggie!
April 28th, 2012 at 11:30 am
Don’t know squat about Burris but I’m glad we took a LB.
Going into 2012 with just Slow, Curry, Wheels, Goethel and Ihenacho was a disaster waiting to happen.
As for Leinart ?
He STINKS.
A savvy QB can get by with marginal arm strength.
Problem is Leinart’s helium balls make Chad Pennington and Kellen Moore look like they’re throwing Nolan Ryan fastballs.
Hell NO to Leinart.
I’d rather lose with TP and find out what he can do than waste any time on Leinart.

Billy Winn is considered a high motor, high efficiency tough football who just needs to be coached up on some technique.
Might be McK’s type of player at this point in draft?
April 28th, 2012 at 11:32 am
Winn can probably hold the edge as a DE in 3-4 looks as well.
