Raiders trade fifth-round pick

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, April 28th, 2012 at 11:38 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders weren’t able to trade their third- and fourth-round picks in this year’s NFL draft because they were compensatory. General manager Reggie McKenzie wasted little time pulling the trigger on a trade as soon as he got to one that was movable.
The Raiders traded pick No. 148 to the Detroit Lions for Nos. 158 (fifth round) and 230 (seventh), which gives them six picks overall in this year’s draft.
Coincidentally, the Raiders selected wide receiver Denarius Moore at No. 148 in last year’s draft. The Lions used the pick this year on Albion cornerback Chris Greenwood.

I think we wanted Menzie and traded down to regroup

    ============

    My theory as well.

  3. RaiderDuck Says:

Pick #230 basically means Reggie can lock up one his PFAs before the draft is even over.

    i agree

A 7th rounder is one less person to have to recruit in post draft free agency. That’s of some value.

  9. RaiderRockstar Says:

I think we can get Fangupo or NJB at #168

I like Kaddu, Sammy Brown, Cam Johnson or Massaquoi with this pick!!

  10. Plunder Says:

Reggie drafted Driver in the 7th.

Can’t really complain about an extra pick. When was the last time Al traded down? haha

  11. YoungAmerican Says:

If the guy you want isn’t there, and other guys you like will be around later, why not get an extra pick?

  12. mcfadden20. Says:

Very true given the last few years how certain players had multiple offers.

We should have waited on Burris til 148 and taken Norman with 129….

    WRITE THAT DOWN!

    =====================================

Obviously, Reggie didn’t think we could wait without losing the player. Besides, we have CBs (although their quality is yet to be determined). We don’t have LBs (and Burris helps a lot).

    _____________________________________________________

Well, Raider Duck….Reggie was wrong. Not knocking him….we are all going to be wrong from time to time….but I was right….this time!

  23. Bob Marley Says:

Moved down just 10 spots for the 23rd pick in the 7th round, right in the middle (there are 46 picks in the seventh round).

    Ok move.

  24. aig-raiders Says:

The key is who was the guy that Reggie wanted and someone else took that made him drop down? I’m thinking it was a CB, either Menzie or Norman.

  25. mcfadden20. Says:

I think Reg will trade 148th for Julies (sp) Peppers of chicago bears and their first rd pick next year

  26. J Hill Says:

S is clearly a need position.

Allen will get him a physical DB with one of these picks.

  27. Lowdown_in_Beijing Says:

    MCf,

Man, after the last few days, it wouldn’t surprise me if Reg ‘could’ do that…

  28. SharkCatcher Says:

This next pick will be a d linemen ..write it down ..take a picture.

  29. Thec Says:

I would not take a WR however. Criner and streeter are interesting

  30. elraidmanhattan Says:

Wow can we get this al is the raiders moron out of here. Reggie is doing a great job like both picks and an extra pick is a plus

  31. beach Says:

    13. Al is gone and Reggie is ready for this! He is picking talented players with character!

  32. Lowdown_in_Beijing Says:

    @ 30…it’s MR from his i-pad.

  33. Autumn Rising Says:

Reg obviously knows more than I but isn’t there a thin line between a mid seventh rounder and a UFA?

  34. xraided Says:

BigMac won’t get a DT with his remaining picks.. BOOK IT!

  35. Thec Says:

I effin hate the chefs….menzie was right there…

  36. aig-raiders Says:

We should have waited on Burris til 148 and taken Norman with 129….

    WRITE THAT DOWN!
    ——————-
I’ll take a LB over a cb any day. We had an impact CB here in #21 and he couldnt help us at all on the D.

  37. beach Says:

SharkCatcher, it better be Massaquoi (or Winn).

  38. ohioraider Says:

    DL or Safety.

  39. 1960AutumnWind Says:

    Backstage

#22 Seriously you need to look what the Jags did – they picked up a LB with similar profile to Burris before the 13th pick in the 5th and Marshall was not as good as Burris. I graduated from Nev Reno and know those two programs. Burris would have been gone to Jags and you can write that down. You are wrong.

  40. backstageatapuppetshow Says:

And we have LB’s….but our DB’s aren’t equipped to deal with Peyton Manning and Phillip Rivers for 4 of our division games this season (as it stands) if we have to watch Huff play Nickle one more snap I’m going to puke!

    We needed a DB….a versatile one….and didn’t get one…instead we got an undersized versatile LB…..suitable for a hybrid college 3-3-5 defensive system….

As I said….not knocking Reggie….but we made a mistake…and Raider Nation should know it!

    ______________

I believe you have to give Reggie at least a few years before you can judge that. Especially with the limited number of picks he was given and the cap situation he walked into. Remodeling a franchise does not happen in one offseason.

  51. aig-raiders Says:

    Backstage,

Burris is 6-2 246lbs, benches 225 31 times and 1rm at 455lbs. He is on the record as saying he uses that strength to shed blockers. How is he undersized?

Are you serious? DVD or Chimeda can blow out Norman. You have got to be kidding me. You are being sarcastic right??? We picked up 4 FAs to shore that up plus we need to see how DVD and Chi – can’t spell his name work with real def. coordinator then go CB next year as needed.

Maybe he isn’t too small….for the outside….but that isn’t my point….we likely could have gotten him at 148 and our area of need was a starter in the Nickle not depth at linebacker!

Oh I dont disagree at all. I was more agreeing with your point in that you cant judge Reggie off of a couple picks in his first draft given the mess he walked into.

I hope that the change in defensive mentality with the players we have and the quality character people we’re adding will make a huge difference on the field.

All I’m saying is we need someone to cover the slot when we play Denver and San Diego….and we don’t have that person!

  76. antispy3 Says:

Burris is an overachiever that has problems dropping in coverage. Looks like a base defense, situational, two down LB. Had some success rushing the QB

And the Lions, the recipient of the Raiders fifth round pick took Chris Greenwood, my draft favorite in that slot. Talk about irony!

Like the Raiders third round pick, not really on board with Burris. Hopefully Reg has something in mind with subsequent pick.

  77. DKnight007 Says:

  82. 1960AutumnWind Says:

    Jake Crawford???

  83. Kirk Says:

    Jack Crawford

StrengthsCrawford has an amazing frame for defensive end. Taller than 6-foot-5, he is going to get his hands up and disrupt passes at the next level. Even if he has to develop early on, he can contribute right away in this aspect. He is athletic for his position and it shows when he is running down cross-field plays. He is adept at shedding blocks and getting to the ball. For a raw player, he has a surprising feel when working against the run game. He struggles against the pass and is still developing his technique to be more effective there, but his frame gives him plenty of potential.
WeaknessesCrawford is still developing as a football player. It is obvious at times that he hasn’t been playing the game very long; he has difficulty reading offensive lines and reacting to plays against the run. Once there, he is disruptive and effective, but he could be a deer in headlights early on at the next level. He is not very quick off the ball and will need to continue to develop his speed and burst. He looks nice but can’t really burst in short areas to get to the quarterback and finish the play.

  84. alzadoX Says:

  86. Kirk Says:

    Check out his combine video…

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/2012/tracker#dt-tabs:dt-by-round/dt-by-round-input:5

  87. antispy3 Says:

By taking Crawford you are indicating you are going to run a 4-3 defense. 275 lbers (this guy has Howie Long’s height/weight measureables) can’t play the five technique. This guy won’t be able to drop in coverage, so he’s not going to play olb. I prefer the 4-3 but i thought Allen was a proponent of the 3=4. So what’s going on?

  88. antispy3 Says:

    # 49 & #79, your fears will become reality. . .unfortunately.

As far as Crawford; does he love football? Sounds like a developmental pick. . .
