NFL Network: Kingdon out

The Raiders have fired longtime scout Jon Kingdon, according to the NFL Network.

Kingdon, 58, has been with the Raiders for 33 years and participated in the 2012 draft which brought in six new players.

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said upon the hiring of coach Dennis Allen that any changes to the scouting staff would not happen until after the draft.

According to a recent New York Daily News report, Joey Clinkscales, a personnel executive with the New York Jets and a high school and college teammate of McKenzie, was expected to be let go and possibly join the Raiders.

He just cut one of the most respected scouts in the league who knew the league and was damn good. .

    ******

THEN WHAT THE HELL WAS SUCH A GOOD SCOUT DOING STAYING IN A SCREWED UP FRONT OFFICE FOR SO LONG

I mean, if Kingdon’s that good, why couldn’t he find a better job?

  • alzadoX

Some of you Semi’s knock the beat writers Cork and Jerry Mac on this blog, but you all come here to post…and really Cork and Jerry Mac are much better than you give them credit for being.

Compare Cork’s and especially Jerry Mac’s pre draft stuff re: Raiders with CSN Paul what’s his name. Sometimes he’s good, but his projected Raiders draft, made almost entirely of players who had made pre draft visits to Oakland, makes you wonder how much he knows about some things.

Just because there has been buzz because draft eligible players had private visits to the Raiders doesn’t mean they will draft them. Most of these players are small college guys, non combine invites, or other players who got little other exposure (often these visits are to help the Raiders get a leg up on signing them as UDFAs); or visits from players who have injury issues (eg Josh Chapman). Many players say after the draft that they were chosen by teams who had shown little apparent interest. And just because someone visited doesn’t mean the Raiders were impressed with what they saw.

    Tell Paul what’s his name

Not like pre-draft speculation means a damn thing, but the Semi’s who are into it here give no props to Jerry’s astute mention of Bergstrom as the most likely potential OL target of the Raiders, and one of the 10 or so he mentioned overall

True or false- raiders win the west ?

False. Tough schedule, too many question marks, first-time coach, new defensive coordinator, def. line coach, etc.

Any chance that, post-draft, we snag Mayock as our Personnel guy? He almost came to work for us a few years back…

As the Raiders work on rebuilding with a toiugh 2012 schedule can we atleast finish 8-8?
    12:30

    Steve Corkran:
No doubt. Heck, there isn’t a dominant team in the AFC West, so there’s no reason the Raiders can’t win the division. Just seems like a lot would have to go right.

  • alzadoX

    Comment From Parker
Based on the new staff and lack of depth, do you think the Raiders will have a leg up for UDFAs?
    12:32

    Steve Corkran:
It’s predicated upon contacting those players right away, making a strong pitch and paying the price. Raiders will hold their own in this regard.

Have do you feel Carson Palmer will do with a full training camp and preseason this year, along with this new coaching staff?
    12:34

Something tells me that he is going to have a big season. Way more comfortable, healthy players around him and bolstered by desire to validate Raiders’ trading for him last season.

Hello Steve, We all know that the Raiders have many holes to fill but where do you think Mckenzie will start first?

Defense. Cornerback, linebacker and defensive line all huge priorities.

What do you see as the Raider’s biggest strength going into the season? Weakness? Thanks again
    12:36

    Steve Corkran:
Strength is the offense, without a doubt. Most of the players are back and healthy. Weakness, of course, is defense across the board. Need playmakers. Don’t see any yet.

It’s not the effin military where you’re stuck with the soldiers given to you. In the real world, where leaders have choices, you need a team that buys in to your strategy 100%. When you’re the boss why would you stick with any underling who wants YOU to prove it the THEM? It’s absurd.

You folks still pining for Raider loyalty are just like Al–you don’t see how the league has changed. The only loyalty is temporary and revolves around money and mission. As for the old days, well, there’s still NFL Films.

Gut feeling…Raider going to draft a C/G in the draft or sign a vet center for depth?
    12:37

    Steve Corkran:
McKenzie won’t pass up a talented player on the offensive line. However, if one isn’t there, he can find backups in free agency.

Props to Cork, right on this one

Being its a copycat league, i feel we should get another receiving tight end . I think New England has a great blue print for using more athletic TE’s. We should copy it.
    12:41

    Steve Corkran:
Raiders already have four tight ends on their roster. Won’t take another one unless one is too talented to pass up.

    *****

    right again, Steve.

Who can say out beat writers aren’t more in touch with the Raiders’ thinking that the web experts?

    Comment From ACONDO
Mel’s Mock Draft have the Raiders take a TE at 95… I don’t see them adding another young TE, Do you?
    11:58

    Steve Corkran:
Seems less likely with the addition of Andre Hardy. However, if one of the top prospects falls that far, I could see Reggie feeling as if the value is too good to pass up.

Have you heard anything about the development of Alex Parsons and Zach Hurd? Hoping they can provide depth on the OL this year.
    12:43

    Steve Corkran:
Nothing, other than they are in attendance, working hard and eager to crack the 53-man roster.

    *****

personally, I watched G/C Parsons play the last couple preseasons and he’s a good fit for ZBS and pretty good–2 years stashed on practice squad, where OL’s rarely get plucked by other teams due to lack of special teams value. I think he’ll be competitive for roster spot this year, but we need fierce competition for backup center. He’s the only hopeful right now. Brisiel can play center in a pinch

From the looks of it it seems we’ll be a base 4-3 defense this year, do you think that changes in 3013 eith more draft picks and a better salary cap or we stick with the 4-3?

Do you think the Raiders will take NT Chapman if he is available at 95?
    12:48

    Steve Corkran:
Yeah, I could see the Raiders going that route, especially now that word is out that Chapman will be healthy enough to resume playing by training camp.

    *******

guess NFL teams just don’t want NT/DT run stuffers anymore. Or maybe Chapman really won’t be ready by start of camp. 6 months is pretty fast rehab from ACL+cartilage surgery. Alameda Ta’amu was allegedly a pocket collapser as well as a run stuffer, and he lasted till R4

short/little LBs sure fly off the draft board early these days, though

Extraordinarily rare for a practice squad guy to earn the kind of praise from a star QB the way Eddie McGee has done with Carson Palmer. What can you tell us about McGee and could he even challenge for a starting job at some point in 2012?

    ****

McGee was a position switch in camp last year, got hurt early, then impressed in last preseason game when healthy. But some Semi here says position switches or a foolish waste of experience

  • alzadoX

    Steve Corkran:
McGee has a nice combination of size and speed. He played quarterback in college, so he has a knowledge of how routes should be run. Also, has pretty good hands. Loved him in camp last season.

    CORKONTHENFL:

#Raiders firing long-time scout Jon Kingdon one of two most questionable moves this offseason. Very good scout, great person.

    ==============================================

Cork seems pretty pissed about the Kingdon firing, but Reggie gave fair warning, so that’s that. Tough decisions have to be made if we’re going to reform this franchise.

As to the other “questionable move” that Cork referred to in his tweet, it’s obviously the Richard Seymour deal. I’m pretty sure Cork was critical of paying an old vet like Seymour so much $$ at this stage of his career.

  • alzadoX

    Comment From joe from tn
Is Seymour’s poor play due to lack of effort or age in your opinion?
    12:55

    Steve Corkran:
Don’t think he played poorly, just not as well as Tommy Kelly and certainly not at a Pro Bowl level. But, yes, it bears keeping in mind that Seymour is getting old for an NFL player and has endured years of banging inside.

    *****

well, Seymour can play outside at LDE too…less banging.

Open competition. Lamarr Houston and Desmond Bryant are the leading candidates.

The only thing that’ll get me pissed at McKenzie will be if he ships off Lechler because of his cap number. We have way too many out of whack contracts to cut before parting ways with one of our only All-Pro players.

Raiders done with moves at the RB, WR, TE positions. After losing Routt and Wimbley I would think all the draft pick and salary cap needs to be used to give Allen as much depth on the defense as he can get.

Any practice squad players you predict could make the 53 Roster?
    12:49

    Steve Corkran:
Mason Brodine, Travis Ivey and Jamie Cumbie.

    I’D ADD ALEX PARSONS C-G.

Cumbie is a really raw DT (as of last preseason) who can move his hands and feet simultaneously, more quick and explosive than fluid, and really needed some work in the weight room, but could be a run stuffer and pass swatter with development. Tall. Looks like a pure 4-3 DT. Arrested for beating up a guy half his size in college. Definitely intriguing guy, but I’d be rather surprised if he makes the roster. I heard he still looks “slim” per Semi’s who commented on his picture at mini camp. 6-7 290 with frame for 310-320

Waddup Nation….up on the late night/early morn; however u wanna look at it.

Didn’t get to check in all weekend. Had a family reunion. Liking what I’ve read though while catching up. Criner, Bergstrom, & Burris are all gonna be studs. Surprised we didn’t take any DBs. DVD seems to still look a year or 2 away from being ready, and Chekwa acted like he couldn’t tough out any nicks to even step on the field. The vets will see A LOT of time I bet.

Can see the vision with the changes and additions, but for now, the D’s success is still gonna depend greatly on the health of Shaugnessy, with the current D-line personnel. Got my fingers crossed that the big fella can stay healthy.

Regarding this 3-year deal with the punter thing, I have done a little research and it seems that most if not all UDFA’s sign 3 year deals.

Funny thing is, Raider Nation went so crazy with this Marquette King thing, you google “UDFA signs 3 year deal”, “contracts for UDFA + football” and all that stuff, and the top search results goes to different message boards talking about King’s 3 year deal and what it means to Lechler, lol.
