Before the draft, wide receiver Jabar Gaffney said that the Redskins were trying to trade him.

That didn’t happen, but Gaffney is still gone from Washington. Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports first reported that the team has released Gaffney and PFT has confirmed the news.

I would have signed a guy like this before using yet another draft pick on ANOTHER young WR.

I like volek, maybe beck or vy. Im just noy comfortable with liono & sorji at all.

  8. RaiderRockstar Says:

Im not UP on Leinart. I just think its far too soon to judge a guy who’s only started 11 games. What did Gannon look like after his first 11 games? See my point. These guys need time.

    ***

Riff comparing Leinart to Gannon? Puke!!

try JaMarcus Russell, Kyle Boller, Jason Campbell or JP Losman (career losers)

  18. Raider Riff Says:

Yep, I will always use Gannon as my comparison. He’s the best we’ve ever had.

He’s a great example of how good someone can be if you give them time to develop.

He’s a great example of how overrated arm strength is.

11 games does not make a starting QB in this league.

And I dont see what is so hilarious about my stance on Pryor. My comments arent opinion. It’s a fact, Tressel just used Pryors athletic abilities. He didnt develop his QB IQ at all. He needs a lot of work to be brought up to the level of where a normal rookie QB is now. Pryor has all the physical tools to be great, but he got nowhere near the football education that someone like Andrew Luck got. Pryors footwork, mechanics, and mental game all need a lot of work. Show me someone credible that feels any different and I will show you a unicorn.

  19. RaiderRockstar Says:

    @HB

plenty of decent vet WR’s out there.

Don’t forget Terrell Owens, Braylon Edwards & Plaxico Burress. I agree. How much youth do we need at WR & TE ???

DHB, Murphy & Myers were just drafted in 2009. They are the “vets” on the roster in those position groups

    @320

    I disagree Dakota…

First thing he does after getting hired is FIRE Hue Jack….

First thing he does after draft is fire a scout with 33 years experience.

This man is losing my respect very fast.

“All blame is a waste of time. No matter how much fault you find with another, and regardless of how much you blame him, it will not change you. The only thing blame does is to keep the focus off you when you are looking for external reasons to explain your unhappiness or frustration. You may succeed in making another feel guilty about something by blaming him, but you won’t succeed in changing whatever it is about you that is making you unhappy.” -Wayne Dyer-

    +++++++++++++++++++++

    LMAO

How could anyone fire Hue Jackson? I mean, the dude is a Hall of Famer!!!! So loyal and honest himself! I am sure he would happily have accepted Reggie as his boss after openly declaring that he was taking over the organization……

Kingdon…head scout for 33 years….guy failed on McClain, DHB, Russell, Gallery, Schweigert, Buchanon, Washington and the list goes on and on and on…..hard to say how much say he really had, but he at least didn’t convince Al that he should avoid those losers….for that alone he should be fired. He has been part of the problem for more than a quarter century of bad to mediocre football since out last SB victory. bye bye, don’t let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya!

    Raider Riff.

    ———————————————

    Raider Riff Says:

    Rockstar,

Are you saying that Bob was calling to pick a TE with our #95 pick?

I think JFB was saying that Bob’s hands were all over this draft, meaning, we got the guys he wanted. But if he was pushing for a TE then that is news to me, I missed that day.

Fill me in on what youre refering too.
    ——————————————————

    That’s kind of true.

I said that if Reggie followed his “best player available” approach and Georgia’s TE Orson Charles fell to the 95th pick, we should take him and I stand by my position.

I wasn’t specifically looking for TE with 95th pick, I was looking for the best player available who might drop to us and I felt that Orson Charles could be that guy, it turns out he was available and we didn’t pick him, he went to Cincy a few picks later.

And the Raiders didn’t pick any kid I mentioned prior to the Draft (as usual) so it turns out I just wasted a lot of time looking up for players I liked…LOL.

But I’ll follow those guys I liked, just to see if my gut was right.

but Leinart can be the next Gannon ???

to quantify any of your opinions as “facts” is beyond ridiculous. Can’t wait until Raider O gets here to rip you a new one – he’s not as mellow as I am.

JFB, to put this guy Riff on staff would be a mistake – like Kiffin. He has some hidden agenda

    For the record.

Georgia TE Orson Charles, Texas LB Emmanuel Acho, Tenn DL Malik Jackson and LSU CB Ron Brooks were the guys I liked (and mentioned) the most in the mid rounds.

ESPN should look at that race as a featured event on TV

  70. Bob Marley Says:

Looking at the Undrafted Free Agents, for the first time, a couple of guys stand out:

Missouri DT Dominique Hamilton 6′5 313:

    - Looks like a good player vs the run, every report I’ve read mentions his run-stuffing ability, no pass-rushing ability at all, but we got other who can do that, a 2 down player they say.

    “Positives —

Very intriguing potential 3-4 nose tackle due to his strength and run-stopping ability; also flashes some burst off the line of scrimmage, can eat up blockers and push and penetrate the pocket.

Big body with good power at the point of attack, long arms and can punch lineman back, can be difficult to engage, can deliver a jolt and establish hand position on contact, gets some push on the bull rush and can overpower blockers.

Solid leg drive, keeps his legs moving, can generate a push on the pocket.

Has the strength to anchor against double teams and holds his ground at the point inside, looks like a two-down run stuffer at the next level, does a great job as a run stopper in the middle of the line, can occupy blockers and free up others around him to make plays.

Plays with a good motor and shows good awareness of the ball carrier, has plus instincts and can make some plays in pursuit.

If he can add some weight and develop into a 3-4 nose tackle he could end up being a tremendous value pick late in day three.

At this point, only has the potential to fill out and play at nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme, but still fits either scheme either at the nose in a four-man front or as a 3-4 defensive end (5-technique).

    Negatives —

His lack of athleticism was exploited at the combine, 5.54-40 was the slowest among all defensive linemen.

Routinely gets upright off the ball, doesn’t use his hands well to shed through contact and is primarily a bull rusher who can push the pocket, but lacks much of an arsenal of pass rush moves.

Doesn’t look very comfortable in stack and shed situations, needs to be more consistent with his hand usage and placement.

Can get upright when he tires and expose himself, loses stamina as the game moves on, tires too easily.

Would need to add considerable weight to be considered full time as a 3-4 nose, weighed in seven pounds lighter than his listed weight at Missouri, value is minimized without the potential to play inside in a three-man front.

Minor durability concerns, played in seven games during his junior season and missed spring practices this season following a broken ankle that required surgery.”

    —————————————————

    One more:

A tall, long-armed defensive tackle with a thick, but athletic looking, frame. Still has the ability to continue to fill out, but carries his 305-pounds very well.

Is at his best vs. the run game. He coils up well for a taller defensive tackle and can keep his base under him, with his back flat, and doesn’t waste any motion getting off the football.

Exhibits good ball awareness inside off the snap and has a “plus” first step for his size. He also does a nice job staying low off the ball, extending his arms into the chest plate of blockers and creating a jolt into contact.

Works his legs through the point and has the lower body strength to overwhelm into the backfield and/or fight his way off of blocks when trying to one-gap.

Does a nice job extending his arms through the play and controls blocks well through contact. Is strong armed and can anchor, but tends to get a bit upright through the play and is straight-legged, which takes away from his ability to shed and two gap.

Is a bit inconsistent at times locating the football as well, he’ll sometimes take himself out of plays inside, but exhibits good range in pursuit, can play off blocks and has a good motor working toward the football.

Is still developing as a pass rusher. He displays some get off burst and athletic ability when asked to stunt inside and close, but he struggles to keep his pad level down as effectively off the ball when trying to rush the passer.

He gets upright, which limits his get-off burst and power into contact and he can be easily handled on contact. Doesn’t use his hands as well to violently shed and isn’t real laterally sudden when trying to side step defenders.

He played in only seven games last season due to a broken ankle and might have some medical concerns going forward.

    Impression:

Plays the run much stronger than his frame would indicate. He’s got a burst off the snap, plays with leverage and extends his long arms. Has the frame to add 15 to 20 pounds and looks like a 3-4 five-technique at the next level who could start in the league.”

if Leinart beats out Pryor (first he has to beat out Sorgi in the tryout and prove he’s healthy) and Bomar for #2 QB, I’m going to assume it’s because he has 6 years NFL experience under his belt, the last 2 under current OC Greg Knapp. Pryor is just getting his feet wet. 1st OTA’s. 1st Camp. 1st Preseason. 1st Regular Season without a suspension or d-bag play caller. Also, he hasn’t played in a meaningful football game since January 2011. 14+ months

Pryor has some work to do and Dennis Allen said as much. No reason he can’t be #2 QB though. Leinart, Sorgi & Bomar all have more to prove than he does. Pryor will be ready when his number is called. I’ll roll with potential over proven sack of trash 100 times out of 100.

If Pryor developed into a legitimate #2 to Palmer within 2-3 years, that would be a really big accomplishment. And after that another 2 seasons and he could be ready to take over for Palmer. What is so ridiculous about that?

Pryor came to the Raiders about as raw as any college freshmen. That isnt even debatable.

  90. Bob Marley Says:

The other UDFA that seems intriguning is Chaz Powell, CB, Penn State.

Kid looks the part in a uniform but very raw and just recently moved to CB after playing WR and being recruited as a S, very good athlete who also returns kicks and plays Gunner on ST’s, always a plus.

    Height: 6’0″
    Weight: 203

    “Strengths:

    •Great athlete and great speed
    •Great kick returner
    •Very good size
    •Lots of untapped potential
•Lots of special teams experience playing gunner on punts and covering kicks
    •High football IQ, good instincts
•Great hands and leaping ability with a nose for the ball
    •Great closing speed
    •Willing and able tackler

    Weaknesses:

•Limited experience at corner, only played 18 games at the position
    •No experience in man coverage
    •Really raw
•Technique is lacking and will need to be coached up
    •May lack a true position

Chaz Powell is somewhat of an unknown quantity among the common fan but he’s a player that scouts are well aware of and is highly regarded.

Powell was a productive player whenever he was on the field for Penn State.

Powell came in as a safety recruit and redshirted in 2007 learning the position. Penn State was very deep at safety though so he played wide receiver and returned kicks as a freshman and sophomore.

Powell finally moved to cornerback for good mid-way through his junior season and started the final five games. He then went on to start all 13 games as a senior.

Powell has shown to be a playmaker when he gets the ball in his hands, sporting a very solid kick return average and returning a pair for touchdowns in his career.

Powell also has tons of experience on special teams coverage units as he was the gunner on punts for pretty much his entire career and played on the kick coverage unit.

As a defender, Powell is very raw. Penn State really only played zone concepts in the secondary so he only has experience in zone and some off man.

Powell’s overall technique improved every game over his 18 game starting career but it still has plenty of room for improvement.

Powell is a smooth athlete that has fluid hips and can run with anyone but his footwork needs cleaning up for him to be more effective in transition.

Powell rarely gets beat deep between the off coverage and his great speed.

He’s a physical player that’s not afraid to mix it up in the run game but he’s got no experience in bump and run and will need further development to make the transition to that type of scheme.

That being said, Powell’s skillset projects well to any scheme and even projects well to multiple positions as an NFL team could move him back to WR with his great ball skills, keep him at corner, or even move him to free safety where he was originally recruited to play.

Powell is already a great special teamer and he’s the kind of high upside player that teams love to target late in drafts that can come in and be a special teams stud from day one and has the upside to develop into a starter a few years down the road.”

    —————————————————

One more, from a Penn State site, they should know him well and I don’t see much of a homer’s point of view:

“Powell is a tremendous athlete, but he’s still very raw in the secondary–though he’s got two years of experience now, he still hasn’t shown much scheme diversity.

I’m not sure he’s ever played any bump-and-run, for instance, and he’ll need to be groomed into an NFL corner.

The benefit to any interested team, though, is that Powell isn’t a guy who’ll have to be stashed on special teams or be inactive while he learns and grows as a defensive back.

Immediately, he can step in and return kicks for a team that’s deficient in that area. And, should the entire wide receiver corps come down with the flu, Powell is uniquely able to provide some emergency depth at that position, too–kind of like a bizarro Mike Furrey.

Long story short, Powell is too athletic and versatile not to make at least some impact in the NFL, and though he likely won’t be more than a late-round draft pick, odds are better that he’s a diamond in the rough than a wasted selection.”

    DMAC, O , Hwnrdr… good afternoon my brothers !!

  107. Raider Riff Says:

Raider O, I just saw your question.

The reason why I think it would take TP a while to develop is because Ive read some pretty compelling stuff written about just how poorly Ohio St did in developing him. Stuff written by pretty credible people. That broke down the offense they ran and how his mechanics basically did not get coached up the entire time he was in college.

They basically painted TP as about as developed as any High School Senior QB. It’s basically been said that TP has all the tools and work ethic to be as good as the next guy, but his coaches simply wanted to use his physical gifts and never demanded he get better in the other areas.

So, that said, if he’s basically at the level of a 2nd year college qb now, I think that within 2-3 years he could be developed enough to be on par with where an Andrew Luck is now. And even then, QB’s need time to develop. Im a firm believer that even polished QB’s need 4-5 years before they can be judged in the NFL. Aaron Rogers is a perfect example of how to properly develop a QB.

We could do the same thing with Pryor these next 4-5 seasons as he sits behing Palmer. And then when he’s finally ready, he’ll be ready. Ready to start and ready to win games and if he can come in his first year as a started and command a 8-8 football team, that would be a great success and we’d know we have a QB for the future to build around.

  108. 8RaiderReign8 Says:

Mike Lombardi was saying the other day that it’s all about the reps and that your 3rd QB will hardly get any, he was talking about Seattle where they have Flynn and Tarvaris who’ll be 1-2 so Draftee Russell Wilson would have a hard time getting any to work on his game.

That was the case last year with Campbell-Palmer starting and Boller the back-up, Pryor didn’t get a lot of practice and it could be the same next year if Leinart comes in.

So, do we sacrifice our back-up QB in 2012, and if disater happens, our season, in order to get TP much needed reps? or do we bring in Leinart and give TP another full year to study the new offense and learn how to be a Pro QB?.

    I vote for the latter.

    AL drafted the players.
    ______________

Look at the draft history of the last 20 years…. ITS DOCUMENTED… Our draft department wasnt good.

    ===========

On the NFL Network, Michael Lombardi was talking about his reflections on the combine. He and then Oakland Raider head coach Norv Turner had looked at Darren Sproles and were in consensus that he was the best player they saw. in the 2005 draft, the Chargers ended up selecting him at 130 – and he would go on to be the best free agent acquisition for New Orleans in 2011 after putting together impressive seasons as a 3rd down back.

The Raiders selected two cornerbacks no longer with the team, a linebacker Kirk Morrison, no longer with the team and traded away that 4th round pick, ended up taking Andrew Walter (no longer in football). Suffice it to say, Sproles wasn’t Al Davis’ choice…but Sproles would go on to dynamic seasons.

The Draft Dept. was good, it just wasnt allowed to develop under Al Davis’ final say…these guys knew talent, Kingdon is just at the end of a career, as was another stalwart, John Herrerra. 33 years is a long time, and it was just time for a different perspective altogether. Its unknown whether Joey Clinkscales will leave the Jets for a Scouting Director position in Oakland, but it appears things are changing.

thats a little short sighted imo

if Leinart beats out Pryor (first he has to beat out Sorgi in the tryout and prove he’s healthy) and Bomar for #2 QB, I’m going to assume it’s because he has 6 years NFL experience under his belt, the last 2 under current OC Greg Knapp.

    Question of the day:

    =================================
in fact that 2005 draft , Raiders passed on Justin Tuck, Kerry Rhodes, and Trent Cole…it was definitely time to shake up the scouting….in fact, probably the only reason Kingdon was there, was because the time frame was too short from January-to-April to seek a 2nd in command as McKenzie was just hiring Dennis Allen and filling out his staff.

    Marley,

TP is not even ready for reps. He still needs a lot of film study and mechanics stuff. He can be developed just fine for where he is at right now, at the #3 spot. He and the #2 arent competing for the same position.

    T. Pryor is about 53rd on the list of players that Dennis Allen and Reggie are even thinking about going into the 2012 season….so I am not sure why 20% of the conversation in this blog is about the guy….3rd string developmental QB.

Move on to someone more important….like the long snapper, or the guy who runs onto the field after the kickoff to retrieve the tee….or the guys who paint the field and rake the dirt….they will all have more of an impact on the 2012 Raiders season than T. Pryor!

    Raider Riff,

The OSU is not a QB school. We do better developing RBs, OL, and defense. I never heard those claims before, but I do know the kid needs work. I also know the kid is a winner, hard worker, has great talent, and you can’t teach/ coach that. Is he ready to start, no way, but I do think he can be a good backup based on his talent.
    **********************************
    Rockstar

This post by Raider O has about the same opinion as mine or Riff’s. All three of us like him, think he has special talents and from what I can tell has a great attitude and work ethic. However, Riff and I do not think he is ready yet – that’s all. I think he probably needs two preseasons to be the backup. And at that point he could back up or start (if he is as good as we all think he is). I think if Lienhart is picked up here he will make it through camp and be the #2 this year. Pryor will be on the roster and with a guy like Knapp he might design some wildcat plays for Pryor this year to get his feet wet during games when it counts. That is where I see this going. Next year we draft someone behind Pryor and have Pryor as the #2. That is a wild guess barring injury.

I heard all about this guy in Oregon coming out of high school because the Ducks wanted him as well. He was the #1 prospect coming out of HS.

Never-the-less I think CP if he stays healthy will be a top 7 QB next year. For next year CP is where the action is.

  160. Raider Riff Says:

    Rockstar,

I dont think he’s ready for the #2 spot yet because I dont think a player can make up as much ground as he needed in just one short NFL season.

He had a lot of mechanical and film study work to do. The mechanics take time to fix.

Like I said before, I dont care about labeling a #2 or #3. To me, at this point, its a situational thing. Leinart is the first option but if we cant get the running game going, nothing is lost by getting Pryor some playing time.

What I dont want to see is his growth further stunted by getting bad playing time in a case where he just isnt ready. Losing confidence in himself and more importantly, the confidence of the coaches. I dont want TP coming in their too early, making some dumb mistakes and getting boo’d off the field.

  161. Dakota Says:

  182. Dakota Says:

If Pryor does get on the field in 2012….it means we are in serious trouble.

Pryor is not going to even get a lot of reps in practice, so he will just have to continue putting in extra work with the other young guys and keep paying attention in meetings.

My hope is that he cna get one or two oppportunities in games in 2013, show some potential, and then we can trade him for a high draft pick or two.

By then the coaching staff will know what they have, and they can decide if he is worth keeping as the franchise QB, or if he should be traded to get us some picks.

Now if and when we sign Leinart is another issue.

I think it would be “prudent” to sign a Vet backup QB, regardless.

    ***

    I’m fine with that, Kell.

I fully expect that to happen. Just think it’s stupid these guys don’t think Pryor should even get a shot at the #2 QB job or any reps. Leinart is the 2nd coming of Rich Gannon and Pryor may not be ready for a BACKUP job until 2014 = silly.

    ********************************
I did not say he should not get a shot at #2. If he excels in Preseason then he should be #2 option. I just do not think he will with his first experience at Profootball. I also said he would be ready after 2 pre-seasons which = 2013. Please note I also said once TP is ready to be a Backup he is ready to start as well because he is not limited by natural skill like arm strength or natural playing ability like ML is.

I think he should not only get pre-season reps but also in season reps with wildcat style plays. Please try to at least understand what I am saying before stating my position which is a little more accelerated than Riffs.

Honestly at looking how emotional you get with TP I am glad we a cool GM that is looking long-term as well as short term and does not get emotional about players like AD did.

  197. Raider Riff Says:

    Rockstar,

Yes, I would have rather seen a vet QB take that beating rather than Andrew Walter.

But that is such a unique situation. Nobody would have succeeded then. That was just a mess, for all the reasons you stated.

Throwing a raw player out their just for the sake of doing it usually doesnt bode well. Rare examples of guys like Elway or Marino or Manning are just that, rare examples. And Matty Ice and Flacco walked on to teams that were extremely talented and they were still brought along slowly and have huge drop offs their second year in the case of Atlanta, proving, these guys still need time to develop. I prefer the Arron Rogers approach. It’s safe and a proven way to develop guys. It’s patient and right now with Palmer, we have that luxury.

But Walter is a perfect example of a guy who got shell shocked. But by no means was he not a good QB out of college. I think with 2-3 years of legitimate NFL development he would have been great. The difference is that TP still needs college level development.

TP has a higher potential but I just dont think at this moment in time he is as developed as Walter was when Walter came out as a rookie. In another 2 years of hard work, I think TP will be better than Walter was. And another 2 years after that and we will have ourselves a home brewed started ready to take the reigns for the next 10 years.

I never said that Leinart is the second coming of Gannon. But nobody thought Gannon would become “Gannon” either. NOBODY saw that coming, I dont expect Leinart to be anything close. All I think is that he can come in and be a serviceable backup and that would be good. He can hand the ball off, has a good playaction move, and he can keep us at .500 if the running game is solid. Saying that doesnt mean I think he’s the next Gannon. Again, you are taking words out of context.

Seriously, we are arguing about our backup QB here. This is getting a lil out of hand. haha

  217. raidertbone Says:

I think Bergstrom is more of a guard, which would actually make him a replacment for Gallery (sort of). Look, Reggie’s having to totally put this thing together from the ground up. I vote for the latter.
    ===============================================
    I vote for the former. Here’s why…

If CP goes down, Matt Leinart is NOT going to save the Raider season.

That’s a notion that needs to be dispelled in no uncertain terms.

Matt Leinart is a stiff. His lack of arm strength is so severe that he can not play effectively in the NFL. He can not make the requisite throws. End of story.

It is senseless to waste time on Leinart.

If CP goes down you throw TP into the fire. Chances are he ISN’T ready. But I don’t buy into the argument that his career might be derailed if he doesn’t succeed immediately. Give him a shot. Let the coaches and staff make a determination whether he has a future at QB.

If CP goes down, Leinart is NOT going to be a savior.

Only way to know what TP can do and to project what he might be able to do in the future is to play him if the circumstances warrant it.

And if CP goes down, that’s the case. There is no upside or logic into wasting time on Matty Lice.

In all fairness, Walter did break Elways Pac-10 records. It was a bad situation he was in with the famous bed and breakfast offense we were running at the time. I know he went to NE and got cut there also, but who knows what would have happend had it not been for that disasturous 2006 season that got us JaMarcus!

    +++++++++++++++++

Yep, you never know what is going to help or hurt a player. Walter, had he not suffered through the Art Shell era, and had been drafted by a team the had a clue, well, he might be a starting QB in the NFL right now. Same could be said of Robert Gallery, Rolando McClain, and other picks that have not lived up….including, gulp, Jamarcus Russell.

Maybe had a team drafted Russell at 25th in the first round, and had he not held out, and had the team he went to not thrown away entire seasons to acquire “dirt” on their HC to fire him for cause and keep some money, and had he not gone through another pizz poor HC in Cable, a guy who was never even close to being qualified to coach an NFL team….and maybe the team that drafted him had a person in place who helped with players’ personal development (like what Reggie has now done for the Raiders with the LaMonte Winston hire, and which other teams have done for years) instead of just sending a guy to watch over him in the offseason….well, who knows….the kid obviously had talent, maybe the right environment, coaching, stability, and less upfront money would have inspired him to greatness?

Sometimes nurture is as important as nature.

I think we all hope Pryor can be a starter for us eventually or a solid back-up because if not, that was a terrible waste of a 3rd round pick when we really could of used that as an organization.

He is an athlete, huge frame, big strides, and maybe he will have a “package” in short-yardage, besides that I don’t think new coach Allen, Reggie at GM and Knapp at Off. Coordinator (gulp!) will take a risk or priority in developing him to make much field time this year, maybe the next, that why they will take a game manager veteran to be a back-up for this year.

With McFadden and the WR core healthy Jason Campbell was off to a career start. With a better 0-line coming in this year and if Moore, Ford, DHB, Ausberry all healthy Palmer can torch the play-action game and take this team far.

I’d take Jamell Fleming, Tyrone Crawford, Mike Martin, Jake Bequette, and the flexibility to possibly trade up or down if necessary.

Needless to say, I’m not sold on Pryor. Didn’t see him steadily improve as a player at Ohio State. Made too many “WTF?!” throws. Seemed to lack the ability to go through his reads efficiently, look off the safety.

Not saying he can’t develop those skills. And in spite of the “character concerns”, he seems like a good, hard-working kid. But it’ll take time, and it’s a longshot. Would rather the Raiders focus on other areas of the team, and worry about their “QB of the future” when they’re in position to get any kid they want.

But like I said yesterday, Pryor is in a good spot. He has a seasoned veteran in front of him to learn from, and he’ll have time to develop that most rookie QBs don’t get. Hope he becomes “the guy”. Just not sure he will, and I didn’t see much of anything in his college career that would give the kind of absolute confidence in him that some folks around here seem to have.

WoW. LoL 3rd rounders can be instant starters. Pryor hasn’t even seen the field and is a project QB at this moment who is having veteran back-ups tried out to be ahead of him. Clearly his best chance under center is 2013 AT THE VERY LEAST assuming the staff likes him and he develops.

    @ paradise

    you are confused, apparently.
how long was Pryor off suspension before that KC game?
We traded for Palmer because Jason Campbell suffered a season ending injury and Hue Jackson wasn’t sold on Kyle Boller to finish the season. Just because Pryor wasn’t ready then, doesn’t mean he wont be ready by WK1 on the regular season in 2012

This time, Allen & Knapp will make that determination – not Jackson & Saunders!!

If Al Davis stays alive or Campbell doesn’t get hurt, Carson Palmer isn’t a Raider. Had nothing to do with Pryor any way you slice it. Also, Palmer played against KC because he was a seasoned vet. Pryor (especially at that point) was a developmental player. Going into that 2nd half, the game was still within reach. If Kyle Boller doesn’t throw 3 INT’s in the first half, Palmer doesn’t see action in that game.

    ++++++++++++++++++++
Very valid opinion Riff. I would also add the kid needs to “grow up” and learn to master the other aspects of being a starting QB in the NFL. Leadership can be developed.

My point was merely that grading Tebow as a player simply because he started some games for Denver is not an accurate portrayal. Tebow has this whole fanbase who revere him based on his religion, not because of his football talent. Denver’s giving him the starting job was nothing more than a ploy to sell tickets. The Jets traded for him to sell tickets as well. NONE OF THIS HAS ANYTHING DO WITH HIS ABILITY TO PLAY QB, and does not automatically make him a better player than Pryor or Leinart or anyone else.

Very confident in his ability to get the most out of the draft and the players already on the roster. I don’t buy that. I think Tebow was named the starting QB because Kyle Orton & Brady Quinn are awful. I don’t think he’s a great QB, but I think he made the most of his opportunities. I think the team rallied around him and I think he showed leadership. He was a winner in college. He was the main reason Denver made the playoffs and beat Pittsburgh a year ago. just my opinion. I’m not going to buy his jersey. I was lobbying for Reggie to trade for him. I just give credit when it’s due – regardless of what religion the guy is. I hate the Donkeys with a passion. AIG,

I agree, I too wonder if TP is smart enough to handle the position. QB is a “judgement” position. You need to have good personal judgement to succeed. It’s refelctive of the demands of the position.

A guy like Rothlisberger has poor judgement but he gets away with it due to his physical abilities. Like Vick and a few others.

That said though, all reports are that TP has been a very hard worker since signing with us so Im going to give the kid the benefit of the doubt for now.

RRS, you havent said what you think of that article?

And for those of you who are so anti Leinart… none of us think he’s going to be the “savior” if CP goes down. We just think he’s capable of a few quarters of decent enough football to keep us in games. But no matter what, if he is in the game, its going to have to be our running game and defense that wins it for us. All we are saying is that we think Leinart can manage a game. Thats it.

Ive seen tape of him in high school. Hell, I remember him when he played in highschool. He was a great high school QB. Had he been developed in college, he’d be a great pro QB. Instead he’s just a basically a fullback. It’s a shame.

TP and the Raiders seem to be trying to salvage TP’s talent whereas Tebow has had two years and done very little to fix his mechanical issues.

We shall see come preseason how much progress TP has made. Hopefully we see some progress.

Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the biker bring her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly. A reporter has watched the whole event. The reporter addressing the Harley rider says, ‘Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I’ve seen a man do in my whole life.’

The Harley rider replies, ‘Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger and acted as I felt right.’ The reporter says, ‘Well, I’ll make sure this won’t go unnoticed. I’m a journalist, you know, and tomorrow’s paper will have this story on the front page… So, what do you do for a living and what political affiliation do you have?’

The biker replies, ‘I’m a U.S. Marine and a Republican’ The journalist leaves.

The following morning the biker buys the paper to see if it indeed brings news of his actions, and reads, on the front page:

Pryor had the playbook down before Campbell got injured. After the Cleveland game, he sent Hue Jackson a text msg that said “i’m ready” . That was with no offseason, OTA’s, camp, preseason, and the first few weeks of the regular season. As a rookie.

Another Lineart Rumor on Pro Football Talk:

Matt Leinart signing with Raiders today

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 1, 2012, 6:21 PM EDT

    AP
Matt Leinart is heading back to California, and back to backing up Carson Palmer.

Leinart is signing today with the Oakland Raiders, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

In 2002, when Palmer won the Heisman Trophy at USC, Leinart was his backup. Leinart would go on to earn the starting job at USC, win the Heisman Trophy in 2004 and was the 10th overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft.

But unlike Palmer, Leinart has never proven himself capable of playing in the NFL. Leinart was a major disappointment for the Cardinals and spent the last two seasons as a backup in Houston, where he suffered a season-ending collarbone injury in his only start last year.

After the Texans released Leinart, there didn’t appear to be a lot of interest. But with the Raiders he’ll have a good chance of making the roster as the No. 2 quarterback, behind Palmer and ahead of Terrelle Pryor on the quarterback depth chart.

  438. KoolKell Says:

Disrupting a stable newsgroup gives the illusion of power, just as for a few, stalking a strong person allows them to think they are strong, too.

Reggie should be afraid, very afraid. According to Corky in the live chat, DMAC is “nearly” 100% healthy. The presumption therefore is that DMAC still suffers from a sprained foot.

    My prediction:

DMAC will go down for the season by game #8. That will effectively end our season since there is no one to fit into his shoes. RB by committee with Jones, Reece, the guy we traded BCampell for etc. is ridiculous.

This will be the Raiders Achilles Heel. It seems to have been ignored. Remember the so-called “committee” has not proven itself at all, except for the fact that Taiwan Jone is injury prone himself.

I hope it works, but I doubt it. In the end we’ll be kicking rocks for our failure to retain Bush.

  440. Goldie7 Says:

That is what separates Plunkett and Gannon from the ordinary washed up QB. They were flumoxed, beat up, and cast off, and still held an image of greatness of themselves. They dug very deep and worked and worked, came back and went on to greater things.

Leinart had lots of left (throwing) shoulder injuries/offseason surgeries in college, and I believe another early in NFL career. He actually was good as an NFL rookie (like 5-6 years ago) and then many think his Hollywood mentality got the best of him overshadowing his modest ability as an NFL QB. He since has had more injuries to throwing shoulder, latest last year after throwing like 13 passes. I think the free agent rookie took over for him after he got hurt though, not beat him out for 2nd string

    Hey Cork,

Cutting McClain would result in about 14 mil in accelerated bonus against him, while keeping him costs us 4.6 mil + 970,000 in salary. So to cut him we have to come up with about 8 mil in cap space this year.

Lechler costs almost 6 mil in cap space this year. You think there is no way he is cut?

I think you and Jerry Mac have to figure out something about the NFL salary cap if you want to stay in your current job. This crap of calling it a “myth” and pretending it doesn’t exist makes you look completely without knowledge, and frankly not so worthwhile reading.
