Raiders statement on Seau’s passing
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012 at 2:09 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Here is a statement issued by the Raiders on the death of long-time San Diego Chargers linebacker Junior Seau:
“We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Junior Seau. Junior’s great passion, intensity and love for the game were evident every time he stepped on the football field. He was a formidable competitor who left an indelible mark on the game of football. We extend our most sincere condolences to his family and the Charger organization.”

When did JFB became a massive idiot?
That dude was pretty cool when he was Vegas. Now he acts like one of KrappyRat’s wacked out Navy buddies from WWI.
Loser
Anyway, RIP Seau. Homeboy must’ve been insane in the membrane to say goodbye to 3 kids at only 43

Well said by the Raiders organization; other teams will follow suit, I’m sure.

Seau was a menace on the field, probably the best LB the chargers will ever see…
Off the field he was a class act…

Even tough Im a raider fan, I feel for what Seau did. Here in San Diego a lot of people crying right now…
Show some respect…

For me, to show respect for a genuinely self-absorbed act would be a lie to myself.
We all lie, just stop the lying to yourself.

I always wonder about suicide at times when guns are involved and the shot is to the chest. It is not impossible that the gun went off unintended. Guns do go off by mistake (loaded but thought not) or while cleaning loading the gun.
He really does not sound like a typical suicide.

You are right. We get some time after the kids goes to sleep, but we need more time.

I can see the need to feel sorry for some people that have depression, maybe a troop that got his legs blown off in Iraq, maybe someone born with a huge mole on their face or something that people are always teasing them about.
But Seau just got done wrapping up 15 years of being a millionaire, the coolest and most popular guy in every place he stepped in, and bagging any piece of tail he wanted in the San Diego area. He had a bright future in front of him.
May 2nd, 2012 at 2:35 pm

C’mon Chico Grad. You said depression is not a disease and suicide is for Divas.
Stop it!

Not that it’s related, but it COULD be …
Did anyone see that Warren Sapp is going to star in a new reality series called “Judge Sapp”, where people pay $50 to be in his courtroom to watch him dole out blind justice? I don’t know about you, but I certainly wouldn’t want him handling my case. And how hypocritical that they would be referring to him as “The Honorable Judge”. Honorable? Are you f-in kidding me?!
May 2nd, 2012 at 2:36 pm

R.I.P Junior … Regardless of circumstances leading to his untimely passing .. He touched many lives with his charities and community involvement. This Silver and Black fan cheered for him as a Trojan and hated him as a Charger

Saw some articles linking Raiders to Cedric Benson. Don’t think it will happen. McK already traded for Goodson. Doubt he brings in another veteran running back too many other holes to fill. Plus, Raiders really need a backup center first … big, big hole that needs to be filled.
Besides, don’t think Benson fits Reggie’s criteria – he doesn’t seem like a guy that ‘loves to play football’. Think his work ethic got him in trouble in Chicago and Cinny.

The level to which I loathed Seau as a Charger and a Patriot is a testament to the kind of competitor he was on the field.
RIP, Junior.

Agreed, JT. People tend to dismiss something they don’t understand. To some, because he was a millionaire star NFL player, it’s unfathomable that he would do this. The reality is that his brain is just as susceptible to “mis-wiring” as anyone else.
May 2nd, 2012 at 2:48 pm
All they’re talking about on the sports radio station I listen to is that this thing with Seau is related to the head injuries from years of playing football.
They cite the Dave Duerson suicide and many other cases of brain issues with former players as an example.
Going so far as to suggest that something major will need to be done by the league and at the extreme, very soon they think this may lead to tackle football being eliminated in high schools and eventually college and then eventually the pros…UNLESS they do something to fix this.
Lawsuits are already in place against the league as we speak. Our own Phil Villapiano has signed off on it as well.
Bigger “balloon style” helmets in the offing?
May 2nd, 2012 at 2:48 pm
The people who deny that mental health issues actual diseases confound me.
Every emotion we feel as humans is a product of firing synapses and chemical reactions in the human brain. Like any other organ, the brain is not failsafe. It is prone to malfunctions just like any other part of the human body. Sometimes they are treatable, sometimes not.
Mental illness is real. And the stigma that suicide carries only prevents people from seeking help when they really need it.

One problem I foresee, is if the somehow can prove that this “miswiring” is due to football.
Issue for the instigators of these potential lawsuits etc. would be proving it happened while playing in the NFL. Could’ve happened in high school, Pop Warner league, or wherever.

It is not just about wealth O.
He went to college, one of the best in his state. He was smart. He was admired and loved by strangers. He WAS wealthy. He was good-looking, and had plenty of options and avenues in life. Had two kids to cherish, who I am sure loved their daddy.
I am sure it wasn’t all peachy, but man I can’t see it.
There are thousands if not millions of people who get molested, have no money, family hates them, no kids, no future, and they keep plowing along.
Than there is Seau. Maybe the most accomplished and wealthiest athlete to ever kill himself.

Yeah, I’m definitely not going to jump into this concussion pitchfork mob. Plenty of people who never played a violent sport have committed suicide. Jumping to that conclusion is classic cause versus correlation. And really, there’s hardly any correlation here.
I don’t have data to support this, but I would guess that the percentage of NFL players who commit suicide does not vary too greatly from the percentage of the larger population who do it.
May 2nd, 2012 at 3:00 pm
Vegas,
It’s a chemical imbalance. Has nothing to do with education, being smart, having a family, etc…

It’s right there right in front of you. You’re usually pretty sharp but I fear your emotion got the better of you on this one. “He HAD it all” is the key sentence. Being an ultra competitive guy, i suspect he couldnt handle not being able to be playing and be part of the action. He gets depressed, takes some stupid stuff and lost it along the way.

There was a feature article in some fishwrap, detailing how boxing was the top sport in the 60’s and nobody thought it could drop-off, and they predicted the same thing for football in 30 years.
Not sure if I would go that extreme.
May 2nd, 2012 at 3:03 pm
look at all the former wwe wrestling stars who comit suicide due to pain and pills also brain injuries.Depression klls these guys.Same gos for football players.
May 2nd, 2012 at 3:06 pm
not everyone is as lucky to be as sane or as strong minded as others. I don’t believe in calling a homeless person a loser because we don’t know all the circumstances that led to that outcome and even if we can overcome similar circumstances if a person drives himself to kill himself why not be sympathetic if the person is innately good? now if it was bernie madoff or something or seau turns out to be a child molestor then f him but otherwise why piss on a guy that suffered? yea it sucks for his kids but is this man stable enough to care for them?
May 2nd, 2012 at 3:10 pm
People who dont have injuries or depression dose not understand What injuries and depression dose to someone and they wont until it happens to them.
May 2nd, 2012 at 3:18 pm
Imagine if your life just stopped and you couldnt do any of the stuff you have done all your life due to injuries.Cant hold or play with your children cant do anything funCant work.It kills a man slowly. Its like torture. The pain gets bad where you cant sleep and depression make it where it hard to eat as well. That Just sucks its hard to live that way. Some people cant handle that and they think killing their self ends the pain So thats a sad deal.
May 2nd, 2012 at 3:24 pm
I wont go into too much detail about myself, but I can tell you guys first hand that the high from being a paid athlete is like no other.
When the season ends there is a huge hangover and comedown. I used to think that the offseason depression was tough until I walked away from competition and boy did I get a wake up call.
It literally took years to feel “normal” again and to be honest, you never really replace what you had and you never really grow out of it. In your mind, youre always a 24 year old stud and as you get older, watching old tapes or looking in the mirror really hurts.
Seau is not and will not be the first guy that just couldnt handle regular life. He was born to play football and the comedown was too much to bear. Seriously, he enjoyed the game that much. Steroids might not have had anything to do with his suicide.
Im not going to pretend to know a damn thing about the details of his death. Im just providing a lil insight into the mind of an athlete and how hard retirement is. It’s kinda unexplainable. It’s facing your own mortality.
Someone smart once said that pro athletes are the only people on the planet that have to die twice. I feel that is the perfect way to put it. For some, as in Seau’s case, dying the first time was too much to handle.
May 2nd, 2012 at 3:27 pm
Hot Shot, well said with post 68.
Depression is unexplainable to those that have never suffered it.
And for those who have it, it can be almost just as hard to describe and get help for. Especially for a gladiator. You dont make it that far in life by accepting your faults. But in the case of depression, it isnt something you can just work around or power thru.
But that is a near impossible for a gladiator to even fathom.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:42 pm
I always wished Seau could have been a Raiders player. He was an exemplary player and I admired the way he played. I didn’t like him twice a year when he used to destroy the Raiders but he was a charitable man off the field. Shocking and sad. My condolences to his family and friends. Sadly I don’t believe he will be the last suicide from the NFL. Great statement by the Raiders too. The NFL statement was pure legal bulls*it and insulting.
