Raiders cut QB, TE

By Steve Corkran
Monday, May 14th, 2012 at 4:06 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders cut quarterback Rhett Bomar and tight end Andre Hardy today, the start of the Raiders organized team activities in Alameda.
Bomar didn’t figure to have much of a chance to make the 53-man roster, with veterans Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart, as well as second-year player Terrelle Pryor, ahead of him on the depth chart.
As for Hardy, the Raiders were hopeful of his making a successful transition from a basketball player to an NFL player. An injury last month derailed Hardy’s progress.
It’s unclear whether his injury was serious enough to hinder his chances. However, he wasn’t able to work with the rest of the players at the rookie mini camp, at least during the media window.
The media are permtitted access to the OTA session Tuesday. At that time, I intend to interview cornerbacks Shawntae Spencer and Ron Bartell about their signing with the Raiders and being the potential successors to Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson.

So Cork is going after Ron Bartell and Shawn Spencer for interviews today, here’s a previous one on Spencer from Taffur, good read.

    - New Raiders coach Dennis Allen was a safety in college at Texas A&M and came up the coaching ranks as a defensive backs coach.

“The first thing that came out of his mouth when we meet,” Raiders cornerback Shawntae Spencer said, “was ‘I am a defensive back at heart. You are the last line of defense and I take that very seriously.”

While it was obvious from Day 1 that Allen didn’t like last year’s corners, Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson, he is intrigued by young Raiders DeMarcus Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa. They will back up and hopefully learn from Spencer and Ron Bartell, who were both signed to one-year deals.

“We filled a couple of holes that have given us a chance to go out and be competitive,” Allen told 95.7 FM last week. “I feel good about the guys we signed and I feel good about trying to develop some of these young guys.”

“That’s the great thing about when you bring in some veteran guys — it gives you a little bit of time for some of these young guys to really develop who I think got a chance to be good players. And I am specifically talking about DeMarcus Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa.”

Spencer said he and Bartell have already told the two second-year players to use them up as resources.

“We’re going to help those guys anyway we can,” Spencer said. “Ron and I are very approachable people and they can always pull us aside or call us anytime of the day or night. There is a science to this position, and we can help them understand that better.”

Spencer has been impressed, after just a week with Van Dyke and Chekwa.

“They are very good young men, very athletic and very talented,” Spencer said. “The sky is the limit for them. It is going to be very fun for Ron and to watch them develop.”

    Good on you Sir!!!!

To answer your question on TP, I agree with you that Leinart with his experience has a leg up on being the week 1 backup QB. I am OK with this.

But if we heading into week 17, and TP has been the #3 all year, and has seen little to no playing time, I am inclined to be a tad concerned about that.

Leinart isn’t any good. He certainly is no Troy Smith or Bruce Gradkowski!!!!!

  • hwnrdr

I’ll see if I can make that Sunday game on the 27th! I’m off Monday, but not sure what’s going on yet! Is the Yanks series sold out yet? Anyways, we will be there for the Monday Nighter against Dallas though!

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

#300 yep, it was really overt and calculated.

Just like how the NFL Corporate hub is NY Giants and Boston. Kraft close friends too with Goodell. Mara part of the clique. The Cowboys/Redskins scam. How the Pats and Giants have won a lot of Super Bowls recently. Add the Steelers in too due to Rooney’s close ties and support of Goodell, pushing for him as commish. The dodgy Steelers-Seahawks Sb. Also think back to the actual Rams-Pats Sb, that was one of the most blatant examples of officials comprising the game.

There was a book written “The Fix is In” or whatever back in the 80′s about shenanigans in the NFL/NBA/etc. I believe there’s certainly involvement, secret direction/wishes going on. Even Amy Trask in a meeting with NFL officials some years ago accused them (nfl) of directing officials.

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

Anyway, i dont want to go on and on about it. I believe as JFB said before there are times when we do over-do it with on-field decisions. The officials weren’t being biased. But there are plenty of instances thruout our history — be it Immaculate Reception, Tuck Rule, Elway trade, actual onfield decisions, Rozelle animosity etc, where that bias clearly exists.

  • hwnrdr

I guess there are still seats left for that game! In the field level right above the MVP seats!

  • http://000 Bob Marley

As far as the officiating goes, I don’t think there is a conspiracy, maybe when Rozelle was alive he tried to mess with Al, but those days are long gone.

I do believe that the Refs have gotten very comfortable throwing flags left and right on the Raiders because it’s the Raiders, I mean, nobody raises an eyebrow if we get called for 10 penalties a game, “that’s just the Raiders” they probably say…so when faced with a tough call, the easy way is to call it vs Oakland.

We need to help ourselves by playing smarter and giving officials less room to make calls against us, it’s hard enough to win games on the field, we don’t need to fight flag-happy refs as well.

So if Lienart has really become serious about the mental part of playing QB and is actually playing up to his draft status……..

The te from boise is a way better prospect than hardy

  • Raidernationdave

Jemele Hill has BSPN’s ‘project’ for a while now. First they got rid of her “cornsrows” and gave her a more “up-to-date” hair cut.

I wonder how all the carpet muncher girlfriends are taking it.

    @Jhill

did somebody really say that Leinart is playing up to his draft status? he was the 10th overall pick in 2006!

LOL. we are his 3rd team in 4 years. he’s competing for a #2 gig because he’s a system fit. I would venture to guess that most Top 10 picks should have the game down by Year #7 in the league

put me down for Terrelle Pryor. thanks

How will they ever fill those giant shoes? No one gets burnt like Chris Toast Johnson and no one can grab, hold and interfere and give up TDs like Stanford Routt!

  • http://000 Bob Marley

    In case you were wondering…

Boise State TE Kyle Efaw, 6-3 1/2, 247, 4.88 forty.

    Positives:

Big frame with growth potential. Covers ground with long strides. Good hands to extend and catch outside his frame. Good body control to adjust to throws. Athletic and smart. Has special-teams experience.

    Negatives:

Is underdeveloped and needs to improve functional strength. Narrow-framed, underpowered as a blocker. Does not jolt with his hands (catches contact). Shows some stiffness in his legs — shows in route running and ability to adjust in space. Is not sudden or explosive to separate vs. man coverage. Gets jammed up off the line. Average run strength.

    Summary:

Underpowered, straight-linish, finesse H-back with receiving skills. Practice squad candidate who has to get stronger.

Jamele Hill and Michael Smith used to date, mayne.

Amazing that people have already closed the book on Heyward-Bey & MM34, going into Year #4 … but still hold out hope for Matt Leinart with 3 years more NFL experience, dumped by 2 other NFL teams

Heck, 90% of Raider Nation doesn’t think Pryor should even get a shot at playing QB for us. thats just strange to me
