Sapp has every right to criticize the Raiders. Al Davis lured him here with the promise of surrounding him with a real team. Sapp could have gone elsewhere and competed for another ring. Instead, he bought Al Davis’s rap, thinking Al would hire a real coach, build a real team, and it wasn’t until he got here that he realized that wasn’t going to happen, and that he was screwed. Al basically ruined Sapp’s career, like so many other veterans, by making the same empty promise.

And of course Sapp is broke. That “generous” contract Al gave to Sapp was back loaded, with little money up front. That was always Al’s trick. He’d make it seem like he was throwing his shirt on the table, when in reality he was just signing players to modest yearly salaries that were attached to a lucrative amount that wouldn’t be paid until they played like their 10th season here.

I don’t know if they do WAR numbers for punters, but in terms of the added field position he gives us (which turns TDs into FGs and short, makeable FG attempts into long, not-so-makeable FG attempts), I’d credit Lechler with a win per year.

He’s not worth anything if he’s just sitting home, not learning the offense.
If they were both in camp right now, then I would agree with you. Reece > Schmitt. But Schmitt’s here, and Reece isn’t, and Reggie Mac doesn’t give a DAMN what Al thought of Reece or any promises he may have made to open the team’s pocketbook.
Reece needs to sign his ERFA tender and get his entitled @ss in here immediately.

============================================
Not the same thing. Seymour’s absent with the full knowledge of Reggie and DA, who are apparently OK with it because Seymour’s a slightly over-the-hill HoFer who can be counted on to come in to Training Camp, ready to go and setting an example.
Reece is a former practice squadder who has started a grand total of 16 games in his career. He’s holding out because his ERFA tender apparently isn’t enough $$$ for him. He’s missed the first veteran Mini Camp last month and the current set of OTAs. And the team just signed a former NFL starter at his position.
If Reece and his agent can’t see the line in the sand that’s being drawn, then he’s an idiot.

Fine. Then sign his tender and continue to work towards a long-term deal. Or sign a waiver, like Bryant did. Or sign the tender, have a monster year, then get franchised for big $$$ or be able to walk at the end of this year.
Those are ALL better options than what he’s currently doing.

Never expect the 1970s Raiders again–football is too big business now and the league suspends players who do alcohol/drugs and/or get in trouble with the law.
We will remember the 70s Raiders forever, but wanting a repeat in the image category has been holding us back in moving towards a team that can win in today’s NFL; losing just tarnishes the image and memories. By the time Ronnie Wolf schooled Reggie Mac, he had moved on from the Raiders because he understood

with Reece, he really could use some skill development to reach his potential and make those big bucks. The union he is a member of negotiated a CBA that doesn’t give him any leverage to get paid big this year; and while he certainly has every right to miss non-mandatory OTAs and use what little leverage he has in contract negotiations, if his agent is smart he should get his butt in OTAs soon where he can get up to speed on the new coaches system and work on some of the finer points of the game, like how to be more QB friendly, help QB under pressure out as a safety valve receiver, learn how to sit in zones underneath, etc.; if he can get more catches with a little space to run, his status as a matchup nightmare is gonna lead to big plays for the Raiders and a big contract for Marcel. A more blue-collar attitude and improved skills regarding blocking wouldn’t hurt him either. I’m sure the coaches are eager to help him. I think the potential for skill development offsets the injury risk at OTAs, if not, why do all the teams have them. Seymour’s skills are already developed

The Raiders aren’t offering anything. Reece is still under contract. The Raiders want him to honor that contract.
***
as I understand it, Reece is an “exclusive rights free agent” who has been “tendered” (offered a contract at a set level under CBA). He is not under contract and certainly has the right not to sign the contract that is being offered…but some of us think that it would be a good move for him to sign that contract and work on bettering his skills improving his production and thus getting a big contract later.
Under the CBA Raiders have “exclusive rights” to him as a (technically under the CBA) 3rd year player, Reece has no options but to sign the tender or sit out, unless he can convince the Raiders to do something different (like trade his rights or give him a better contract than the tender). Reece has little leverage, even less now with Schmitt signed
but, it’s not like Reece is refusing to honor a contract he signed. He didn’t sign any contract re: current league fiscal year

True, I guess my point is he is still under his original contract which makes him an exclusive rights free agent. Unless another contract is reached, next year he will be unrestricted.

Pryor made his own point when a reporter started describing the different skillsets of the three quarterbacks. Leinart knows the West Coast Offense, you can run, Palmer has a big arm . . .
“I’ve got a big arm, too,” Pryor said quickly. “A big arm.
“I just happen to be able to run and that just adds on to my arsenal.”
May 15th, 2012 at 7:23 pm
Pryor said he had several phone conversations a week with Al Davis up to the time Davis died, and Pryor said that he feels a special responsibility as Davis’ final draft choice (as a supplemental pick in 2011).

Johnny,
Al Davis was the worst GM in professional sports over the past 20 years. Reggie will have to do a lot more than sign a couple of Heisman winners to be as bad as Al. The main difference is that Reggie is building a core team plus the Heisman winners. Al built his entire team on a couple of heisman winners and a bunch of track runners.

Reece had 5 catches less than dmoore. Blocked just fine for dmac while he was leading the nfl… The fact that he still has WAY more potential than production is a good thing.. He deserves a new deal.
****
Agree Reece has great potential and is a fine lead blocker for DMAC–maybe the only lead blocker fast enough for the impatient DMAC. But he would still be a better blocker if he got tougher and more physical and he would catch a lot more passes for a lot more yards if he learned the finer points of being a receiver out of the backfield. He could learn those kind of things, along with the new coaches’ schemes, by getting to OTAs and then he’d be productive and make a lot more money next year. He has no leverage to get more money now. There are smart times to hold out and dumb times and most signs point to this being a dumb time to hold out for Reece. A lot of ERFAs are holding out no doubt, but most don’t have a new coach/regime and much more potential than past production like Reece.
However, I can see why he wouldn’t want to sign a waiver like Bryant. If I were his agent I would tell him to sign the best deal he can get now and get to work at becoming the big producer that will mean big dollars as soon as next year

I am glad we brought in another QB. The linert move makes a ton of sense for a lot of diffrent reasons.
Linert knows the knapp O as he has been at it for 3 years. also Linert can help both palmer, and TP as he knows the O from a QB perspective and can provide intel on some of the nuances. Linert will also push TP to work harder…This was a win win IMO…

Has anyone ever been below 50% in meaningful games over 2 seasons as a college QB and succeeded in the NFL?
May 15th, 2012 at 10:05 pm
Arguing about who will be the backup? lol. Nice to have Palmer around. No question as to his ability and his status as #1.
As for the backup, who cares as long as TP continues to improve and Leinart gives us a chance in case anything happens to Palmer. By all accounts, they liked his progression in Texan land so why hate on him?
May 15th, 2012 at 10:13 pm
Sounds like the offense had a good OTA today, I didn’t hear much about the Defense but maybe thats whats expected in OTA’s. Im really interested to hear about the Defense, maybe next time we will hear about some of these new players on defense
May 15th, 2012 at 10:17 pm
ESPN did a report on the Raiders tonight and then analysis after the camp report.
Schleureth and Merrill Hoge were asked what Raiders had to accomplish to “win” the Palmer trade. Schleureth said “multiple AFC West tites” and Hoge said “Well you’re from Denver Mark so I know it hurts to say it, but for the Raiders to win the Palmer trade the Raiders have to win a Super Bowl with Carson Palmer”.
I don’t care about their analysis of the Raiders cuz I think they bother to do their homework on us. They hear a few things, maybe thumb through a report, but it was interesting to hear mention Raiders and Super Bowl in the same sentence and not have it be a punchline.
May 15th, 2012 at 10:29 pm
I realize Raiders gave up alot to get Palmer but it seems his name can’t come up without mentioning what we gave up to get him.
Do you guys EVER hear mention of what Chicago gave up to get Cutler?
-TWO 1st round picks (non conditional) AND a 3rd rounder PLUS Kyle Orton.
I NEVER hear anyone talk about the pressure on the Bears to win a Super Bowl becuz of that trade…NEVER.
Noone ever talks about what they gave up.
I guess with Buffalo paying Fitzpatrick 55 million they’d better win one as well, and how much time do we allow Washington before they MUST win a SB for what they gave up for RGiii?
May 15th, 2012 at 10:29 pm
Yeah DJ I saw that too. later they picked who would win the AFC West and Hoge actually picked the Raiders and you can guess who Mark picked.
May 15th, 2012 at 10:33 pm
Mark is a hater and Hoge called him on it.
Pu$$y!
May 15th, 2012 at 10:34 pm
RealRaider, I didn’t see that part (Hoge’s prediction)but it was funny when he said that Vince Young would not be able to “surplant” Fitzpatrick in Buffalo.
The word is “supplant” of course. I know i’m nit picking but when someone as cocky as Hoge is screws something up like that i can’t help but find it amusing.
May 15th, 2012 at 10:36 pm
I give Hoge credit for picking Raiders. He obviously took the time to do a little bit of research on us.

May 15th, 2012 at 10:42 pm
Even after Dan Patrick’s interview w/ Carson he mentioned how much we gave up for Palmer…said he thought it was too much but also said it was an understandable move given the circumstances.
Is Cutler better than Palmer? I don’t think so, but the Bears gave up more than we did to get him.
I’m out here in Chicago and I never even hear the local guys out here mention what they gave up. They all love the deal. I don’t even think anyone out here knows…or cares.
May 15th, 2012 at 10:43 pm

Im not sure why the Eagles didn’t bring back Schmitt, I read some Eagle fans comments and they really liked him kinda like the Giants fans liked Tollefson. These are two guys who aren’t very flashy or nothing, but they get love from there ex teams fans. I put some weight in that. I believe there could be a place for Owen here, even with Reece.

May 15th, 2012 at 10:46 pm
Thx Reality. I know i’m beating this to death but given the circumstances the Palmer deal for us made a heck of alot more sense than Cutler.
Bears not only gave up the 2 1st rounders and the 3rd but a bonafide healthy starter in Kyle Orton.
We replaced Kyle Boller. What makes more sense?
May 15th, 2012 at 10:46 pm
Cutler is younger than Palmer, and he was in his prime when the Bears traded for him.
May 15th, 2012 at 10:47 pm
I am not worried about the # 2 QB controversy. What I do wonder is , what about the D??
Seems Corko was way silent on it today, saying that there were few notable plays or play makers coming to the fore and that Sho-Nasty is still recovering from surgery, and “should be ready” for training camp.
When I posed the question in the live chat earlier, asking Corky how did the CB’s look, he didn’t reply. With my question I made the comment that last year the CB’s almost never turned their heads when the ball came in, and put a hand in an attempt to make a play. I then asked Corky have they changed that flawed procedure at this OTA?
There was no answer.

DJ Johnny,
Look to the suspicious nature of the transaction and not so much the price we paid for CP. The trade was put together by Hue the Pimpin Magnificent under exigent circumstances (or so says Hue) in order that the Raiders make it to the playoffs, which Hue later admitted at his exit presser, he knew would never happen.
Frankly speaking I would have offered the couch potato CP $2M up front, back loaded with incentives. I would have told to Bengals to go kick rocks regarding any draft choices.
But, that is who I am, I won’t pay full price for anything, especially if it is on the downward maintanence curve.
Of course, any thing the Pimpin Magnificent had his hand in, the posters veiw as suspect.

Who let Monkey O out of its cage?

High price? Sure. But let’s face it folks, good QBs that can make the throws Palmer can just don’t grow on trees. How many #1s have been wasted on crap QBs? Hello Russell and countless others. You pay a high price for good QBs in this league.
And you have to admit, the ceiling was low with Campbell. Get to the playoffs, and good teams merely need to stack the box to stop our running game. Force him to win it with his arm. He was happy to sign on as Cutler’s backup. What does that tell you?
You’re right O, nobody will care if we win.

IF WE WIN

Hardline and Raider O, Good points but my beef is that Palmers name can’t be mentioned w/o talking about how much was given up when many other questionable deals with teams giving up a ton gets a pass…ala Cuter.
Last I checked Cutler might be the 3rd best in his own division.
May 15th, 2012 at 11:15 pm
I agree with Vegas about Palmer, he needs to be more careful with the ball. He trusts his arm too much.

Simple answer: Cutler is a damn good QB who was coming off an all-world season. Palmer sucks and was sitting on the couch after tossing 20 ints and leading his team to a 4-12 record.
May 15th, 2012 at 11:19 pm
Yeah, a little too Favre-like in that regard. Needs to work on that.

DJ,
Cutler was 26 when the Bears traded for him. Palmer was 32, he was retired, and Cinci moved forward with a rookie QB who was playing at a high level.

Should Hue Jacskon have folded tent when Jason Cambell went down? Tough spot.

Try Some Reality,
CP is worth it if he wins.
BTW, I was unmercifully hammered by dozens of posters who were JC worshippers, for stating during the season that JC was a second, nothing less and nothing more. That AD operated in a state of dementia was evidenced by the fact that AD claimed JC was the next “Jim Plunkett.”
When a QB trips on his bottom lip that remains unfurled past his knees, it’s hard to get past the image of him being a back-up, notwithstanding the fact that JC had no fire and couldn’t make the throws.
I still remember in one of his final games the INT he threw right to an inside linebacker opponent who was standing still: the ball wasn’t tipped, batted up into the air. JC flat misidentified the other side’s linebacker; and BTW the linebacker looked shocked too. TV announcers tried to explain it away and couldn’t. It was a very awkward moment.
Of course those same JC worshippers are now eating crow, and big helpings of it, when JC signed as a back-up merely 24 hrs after hitting FA.

Love the name man, but you should really take your own advice. Why in the hell would I ever believe that Carson Palmer will outplay Jay Cutler??? Give me the choice between Cutler and Palmer and I’ll take Cutler 11 times out of 10.

TSR,
I like our offense, but you have to admit, the Bears have a good offense too.
QB: Cutler, Campbell
RB: Forte, Bush
WR: Brandon Marhall, Knox, and Hester

Culter is an excellent talent. However his greatest attribute is laying an egg when it comes down to it. Culter is nothing now, and will be nothing in the future. He is a 2nd stringer too.
Champions find a way to win…..not to lose.

You were hammered by JC worshippers? Really? I’ve only seen the Hardlind handle in the last couple of weeks.
May 15th, 2012 at 11:31 pm
Hardline – I think I know who you speak of. It’s mainly one delusional cat in here that would have everyone thinking JC was a legend in the making, and a few of his minions. Clearly, the guy had an agenda. Funny thing is that clown came in here the other day to call others imposters. After all that crap he painted these blog walls with, we’re the imposters? LOL. Guy doesn’t know his pie hole from his dookie maker.

KK,
yes I was, not that it affected me, because I knew I was right.

JC overall is probably better than Cutler, since at least JC is steady. He is not flashy, but probably wouldn’t roll over like Cutler in critical games.

Really? Interesting. Especially considering that Palmer really came into his own towards the end there. In fact, why yes, compare the last 3 games played by both QBs and guess which one outplayed the other in every single one of them? That’s right, your Oakland Raiders starting QB. Be happy about it. And quit p1ssing in the kool-aid.
