Decatur Daily has tape of McClain incident

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 at 12:34 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Decatur Daily has obtained video of the incident that left Raiders middle linebacker Rolando McClain facing chargers of third degree assault, menacing, reckless endangerment and discharging a firearm in the city limits.

The most serious of the allegations, that McClain produced a firearm, put it near the ear of the alleged victim Rishard Tapscott and firing it, are not included. The incident occurred on Nov. 30, when McClain was away from the team because of the death of a relative.

McClain was excused from the Raiders’ voluntary organized team activity session Tuesday, with coach Dennis Allen saying he was dealing with legal issues. He is scheduled to be in court Thursday.

Also charged is Jadoriaus Willingham, who is shown beating Tapscott when the altercation moved from indoors to outdoors.

The attorney for the victim, Carl Cole, believes it bolsters his client’s case.

“It’s obvious that McClain has been edited out of parts of it, but it matches up perfectly with (the victim’s) statements of it,’’ Cole told the Decatur Daily. “I think this shows there may be cracks in Willingham and McClain’s circle of friends. They may not be willing to hide what happened that night.’’

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said on Dec. 1 the league would follow developments in the legal case before determining whether McClain will be subject to discipline under the league’s personal conduct policy.

So Beetch, how do the Lackers respond from a 30 point drubbing by OKC? Rather if you are going to be that dominated and humiliated, what exactly is the strategy to come back with?

    ————————–

Yo, the Purple & Gold gots to go with match ups, can’t be successful against their athleticism

Gasol v Ibaka – Gasol works him inside and in the post for 18 and 8

Bynum v Perkins – If Bynum doesn’t discover his dominance we’re finished. Needs 24 and 14

Kobe v Anyone – Kobe doesn’t need 40, but must dominate the 2nd going into halftime and the 4th to close it out

Artest keep Durant under 30 and somehow Sessions and Blake contain Westbrook, although we don’t really have anyone who can stop him

This season the Lake Show has been successful late in games V the Drizzle, so gots to keep it close into the 4th

Newest Oakland Raider Jack Crawford speaks to Bay Area media
By SUSAN LULGJURAJ, Staff Writer |

St. Augustine Prep graduate Jack Crawford was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
The closest Crawford will get this way is when the Raiders will play at the Baltimore Ravens on Nov. 11.
He spoke to The Press of Atlantic City following the draft (story link), but also had time with the Bay Area media. CNS Bay Area provided a transcript of that interview.
Here are some of the highlights from the interview, but click here to check it out in its entirety.

Q: Have you taken a moment to reflect how unlikely this is, given how long and how far you’ve come?
A: It’s crazy. It’s a little emotional right now, everybody is crying. It’s so unlikely. I told myself coming into this situation that I wasn’t going to get upset if I didn’t get drafted. I have come so far already. I am just so happy. This is one of the best days of my life.

Q: You had a dip in production your junior year. What happened there?
A: I got hurt. I sprained a ligament in my right foot and it was just hard, because instead of having the surgery, I decided to let it heal a little bit and try and come back. I didn’t give myself enough time to heal up and I could never play up to my full potential.

Q: When did you make the transition in your mind from basketball player to football player?
A: It was the first year I played. Stepping on that football field for the first time, it was a feeling I never had before. I liked how it was a physical game. I grew up playing rugby and stepping on the football field, there was just a lot more excitement. When I started to get more of a feel for the game, I became more and more intrigued by it.

sure he would, it wouldn’t net him any less money and would make him look like a good dude to fans – because it would give Reggie more cap flexibility. no reason not to. Here we go (some new info)

Pryor says he has ‘big’ arm to go with fast legs

ALAMEDA — I’ve written, and said, time and time again that each of the Raiders’ three quarterbacks has a distinctively different skill set. So I asked Terrelle Pryor about it.

Carson Palmer is the prototypical stay-in-the-pocket bomber with the big arm.

Matt Leinart is the definition of a left-handed “system” quarterback.

Pryor is the gifted unknown who can make plays happen with his legs, in the mold of Cam Newton and Tim Tebow. Except…

“I’ve got a big arm, too, a big arm,” Pryor said, without a hint of amusement. “I just happen to be able to run, and that just adds on to my arsenal.”

He also has a bushel of confidence still, which is also needed to not only survive, but thrive as an NFL quarterback.

“You go throughout the reads and do the right progression and throw the ball to the right spot, where you want it to be,” Pryor said. “And if nothing’s there, and I take off, then that’s a plus.”

Many saw the recent signing of Matt Leinart as a negative in Pryor’s development. But not Pryor, who has acknowledged that Carson Palmer is the starter and that he is competing with Leinart to be the primary backup.

“This is the business of football,” Pryor said. “You have to have a strong core quarterback group because that’s really what leads the team. Defense does win games, yes. You need everybody to be on the same page, but you need a quarterback to know what’s going on and be able to lead the team.

“I’m not discouraged at all that Matt’s here. Matt’s a great guy and I’m going to go about my business getting better and working hard and no one out-working me. That’s how I live and that’s how I do things every day, and it won’t change.”

    Correct, Bcz?
    *************************
No player in the NFL, past present or future will ever refuse to restructure their deal. Rock is correct on this, most fans get confused and think the term ‘restructure’ means you save the team money. It is the cap vs cash part guys don’t understand.

Basically it works like this. If we owe you 10 million dollars on a 4 year deal, and your base salarys are 5,3,1,1 million per year, and we need to lower your cap hit this season because we cant afford you at 5 mill, we restrucure like this give you an 8 mill bonus this year in cash (which now guarantees you get paid), and make your salary each of those 4 years 500k. What we have done is evened out your 10 mill cap hit over 4 years, and saved 2 mill in space this year. Get it? It is a bit confusing understanding the cap vs cash thing, but in the end all you are doing is giving the player all his cash up front, so you can spread the cap hit over time.

Now, a guy like Aaron Curry, who was due 5 mill THIS YEAR, renegotiated his contract, and added years to the deal for the same 5 million. This is NOT a restructure, which is where a lot of guys get confused as well. Most players aren’t willing to do what Curry did, and would rather get cut and take their chances on the open market.

  38. Dan78 Says:

So what if Goethel has zero starts.Every player has to have his first start sometime.Goethel has survived what,3 different coaching staffs,so they all must see something in him.He was a projected starter last year before he got hurt.Lsat year it was even reported on this blog that some of the coaches liked him better in the middle than McClain. If he doesn’t get hurt again,he is the logical choice.

  46. kvnbntly Says:

    7/29/2010: Signed a five-year, $40 million contract. The deal contains $23 million guaranteed. 2012: $970,000, 2013: $4.005 million, 2014: $5.805 million, 2015: Free Agent per rotoworld
    ////////////////////
so in the event McClain is found guilty, or just disintrest the team so much they decide to cut him. His 970k would count against the cap this year, but they would be off the hook for the remainder of his contract???

I’m really not saying that he isn’t a punk, but I don’t see how you guys are using this Alabama incident to say he is a punk.

McClain getting involved because he thought someone was about to pull a gun makes him a punk?

well I finally watched the video. My understanding is that the victim wants to sue McClain in civil court as well as testify in criminal court, and McClain’s attorneys have suggested that he wants to blame the guy with the money- McClain – to get some money out of it.

Victim’s attorney suggests that McClain’s peeps leaked selected videos (don’t show enough to suggest McClain liable for hurting victim).

Pretty obvious McClain was involved in a bad situation and didn’t do anything constructive to mitigate it, at minimum

Video does show McClain’s alleged friend beating the victim

  92. J Hill Says:

I have a hard time believing that the best LB in the country coming out of college is a bust.

Definitely needs to be playing ILB like he was in college instead of 4-3 MLB.

But there is NO doubt that McClain was our best LB last year.

    On ONE leg!

  94. guest123 Says:

    JHill,

I’m inclined to believe that RoMac had many moments to mitigate the situation, be the peacemaker, or at a minimum walk away and hail a taxi. But he’s neck deep in something behind the scenes and it was worth it to him to be part of the escalation.

To me, that’s more than one spontaneous bad moment. That’s a series of bad moments based on poor decisions and I suspect it’s been that way his whole life. Again, pardon my suspicion which cannot be proven, but that’s what it looks like.

    ****

odds are about 10:1 you’re right about McClain in the picture. But it is possible that the police were twisting him to handcuff or get him in the car and he smiled and tilted his head in the process and the photo was snapped at that time. Obviously the Decatur Daily and their cameraman were alerted of the upcoming arrest by police. Certainly the photo looks bad and probably is what it appears to be but can’t tell for sure

In any case, I hope Rolando realizes after the second incident there (someone shot at his vehicle a few months earlier) that he should try some combination of avoiding Decatur and/or taking precautions to avoid problems if/when he feels he needs to be there; and make some decisions about who are really his friends going forward.

Hopefully he can get his mind on becoming a better football player instead of loser behavior

  96. guest123 Says:

    I agree with you AlzadoX,

RoMac should avoid Decatur altogether. He can’t trust his own judgment in handling family/friends in certain situations and he has to realize it. It’s sad that a true moment of sorrow for his grandfather’s death could ever be tainted by a ghetto gun flashing incident. What does he need to be hanging with these people for? RoMac doesn’t understand who he is.

  97. ottocrat Says:

    CUT HIM, MICK!

  98. Cervantes Says:

Man, I’ve been in plenty of fights and plenty of play fights that escalated a little bit with friends.

That was a play fight AND the guy that was on the ground willingly took things out of his pocket, went outside, AND threw the first punch.

Man on top of him wasn’t punching him nearly as hard as he could have or taking as many shots to the head as he could have.

How THAT winds up in court is BS and a waste of Tax Payer Money, especially when a shot is fired, no one is hit and there are no witnesses. No way that even gets files if RoMac’s not there.

BS. RoMac has a lot to prove on the field, but anyone who hates on him for that is just hating for the sake of hate.

If you don’t want to fight then don’t go outside and apologize for what you said. But if you go outside AND throw the first punch…hard to look at that as Assault.

Thus the 3rd degree charge. No way it sticks.

  99. J Hill Says:

  101. J Hill Says:

What if he has trimmed his list of so called friends down?

Where is the evidence that he hasn’t learned from that?

  102. guest123 Says:

Hey, I’m just a regular dude with a regular salary and a regular boss. I sometimes go on training to other cities and stay in nice hotels and go to convention centers. I sometimes head back home and hang with my hometown boys. But if I get into a pistol showing fight that is even a misdemeanor. Guess what I’m getting from my boss?

  104. Cervantes Says:

And for all you people here that want to criticize him for not being a peacemaker…

When a fight or assault or crime happens in public witnesses are not held legally accountable for deciding not to intervene.

RoMac’s friends just might have filmed it to prove that RoMac wasn’t involved or they might have filmed it to make fun of the guy who they were chiding for his cowardly behavior.

But there is ABSOLUTELY nothing that implicates RoMac as a participant in that altercation clearly among friends. How else is that guy in the house and given the time to take his belongings out of his pocket?

Then someone comes and helps him up. That was a fight amongst friends. I think most young men who have played any type of contact sports have seen this happen.

  105. ottocrat Says:

Note to Raiders: Don’t draft anyone from Alabama in the 1st round. P.S. I couldn’t care less about the alleged crime, I just want to cut him because he sucks.

  106. Cervantes Says:

Guest…no way a company is firing an employee for that incident even if the employee was the guy fighting unless they want a wrongful termination suit hitting them by the following week.

If you get canned for standing next to a fight, even if you know both guys, then you were going to get canned.

    Drama and Judgment much?

  107. Silverandblack666 Says:

The guy was excused from practice to go to a funeral and instead of handling his family business he went out thiggin instead. PERIOD!

Everyone else on the team was working hard preparing for Miami and instead of watching film on Miami’s offense or grieving with his immediate family he was out in the streets playing thug.

Its a matter of priorities here his priority is not to work hard in game preparation but to screw off.

This is the issue I have with McClain, not the gun, not the fight his lack of respect for the team, his lack of hard work and his priorities.

  108. realtruraider Says:

No one knows the whole story, there has to be a reason for beating this guy. In the video the dude was acting like a lil biatch, but thats what most fools do when getting confronted about some schit.

I remember when this first happened the word was the dude that got beat down stole some stuff out of McClains sister house.

Now for McClains on field issues, last year the whole defense sucked. It has ben reported that McClain’s knee was fk’ed up plus his ankle. He got some special stem cell treatment in the offseason and sounds like he feels alot better. So Im going to wait and see how he performs healthy and with better coaching. I have a feeling he’s going to have a great year.

  109. Cervantes Says:

“You are really raking him over the coals for going to his friends house?

Not like he was at the strip club or anything.”

Yes I am that is exactly what I am doing. Because you are a pro football player you are being paid millions of dollars to play on Sunday. You were excused from practice to attend a funeral not go over to your friends house. Grieving with family is acceptable going to a church function is acceptable if you are done with your family business you get your ass back on a plane and back on the practice field no screwing off.

Every year many players are excused from practice for family reasons or deaths in the family and not one of them is as stupid as McClain to get caught up in some crap like that when you are supposed to be with family grieving.

Not to mention its a lack of respect for his dead grandfather.

What I see is a young man using the excuse of a dead relative to get out of practice so he can play in the streets.

  117. Raider E Says:

Would it still be thuggin if it were a bunch of white guys in that living room? The boys had a bone to pick with one of their own, and he decides to empty his pockets, walk outside, and handle his business. These boys are just that, boys. Everybody grows up throughout life, but most are not privileged enough to have the adult guidance it takes to avoid bad situations in our early twenties. Give Romac a break and let him recieve the same justice we all are entitled to.

  118. Silverandblack666 Says:

    Really????

  121. Silverandblack666 Says:

    Raider E

Why are you making this a racial issue?

Second point…you do realize that assault is against the law right?

So if any player breaks the law he will also be punished by the league for doing so.

Lastly why are you so quick to rise to his defense he should have handled his family business and then got back on a plane to practice after all he is being paid a lot of money to prepare for a game.

Why is it that many other players do NOT find trouble and a few of them are always in trouble.

Calling people over to your house for a fist fight is looking for trouble no other way to spin it sorry black or white its all the same

  122. Raider E Says:

Im with you JHill. Let Romac handle his own personal issues. Its his business not any of ours. I only care that he plays football to the best of his ability and lets the chips fall where they may in regards to playing time or being cut etc.

  127. Raider E Says:

    666,

I apologize for bringing race into it, but I got that sense reading some of the previous posts on this thread.

I will be honest and say that growing up in the East Bay with all my so called friends it was fairly easy to get into trouble and gain some street cred. while doing it. It is a hard habit to break.

I feel empathy for people who suffer from the same thing I suffered before I did a little prison time and finally figured it out.

Violence truly disgusts me these days< but I had to figure that out on my own. We dont all have parents that guide us to be responsible adults. In fact alot of us do not, and it may take a little longer than 25 years of age to understand the concept of cognitive behavior.

  128. Raider E Says:

With that said, I thought he would be a better football player.

  129. itzSteve Says:

I have been scrolling through the blogs for the past few weeks and listening to all of you giving your opinions regarding our linebackers and how Curry and RoMac both need to go…you guys are off your freakin rocker! With the hiring of DA and Tarver and the defensive minds they bring with them, they will bring out the best in our defense since they won’t be tied to the AD philosophy any longer. We haven’t had a defensive minded HC since Madden for pete’s sake! I think once Lamonte Winston gets RoMac’s personal life straightened out, we are going to see the beast middle linebacker we all hoped RoMac would be. He also had his best success with a defensive minded head coach with Nick Saban. I have been happy with what Curry has brought to the defense so far. He plays fast and is much more suited for the 4-3 so he can react and attack. Curry struggled in Seattle’s 3-4 because he was thinking too much and having problems reading the blocks coming at him. The addition of the veteran Wheeler will be a nice addition on the strong side, although I am hoping for a big splash from the Burris kid. I just like the way he plays. I don’t have a ton of hope for Goethel. I agree that he is the Chaz of the defense…

  130. DutchRaider77 Says:

    119

I agree that breaking it up would have been the idea solution.

I’ll even agree that he may need some new friends.

But to suggest that going over to a friends house, not some party, after dealing with burying your grandfather and all that comes along with that day is the same as playing in the streets is puzzling to me.

  132. Raider E Says:

    666,

Its foolish to bet on a football blog. I learned that the hard way as well. Most will not pay up when they lose. MR still owes me twenty on the Jamarcus bet, and I let Brian off the hook on the opening day WR corp. bet last year or he would not be posting here.

I dont get the feeling Romac will be starting either. If he really wanted to be with the team this week, he would have figured it out.

I understand why Raider fans are attempting to defend Slow or at least downplay the significance of this ‘incident’.

No one wants the 8th overall pick in the draft turn out to be a bust due to immaturity, lack of commitment or character issues.

No one wants to see Slow perform poorly on Sundays.

Yet that’s exactly what the Raids have gotten out of Slow so far.

We’ve seen the lack of hustle. We’ve seen the incredibly inept Stafford whiff at the most crucial, game determining time.

We’ve got to wonder why Slow needed an entire week away from practice and the team to supposedly attend a funeral, only to be arrested for this absurd thuggery.

This kind of nonsense is intolerable and indefensible.

Now we’ve got to deal with the very real possibility that Slow will be suspended and not be available to play.

And on top of all that, there’s now also the durability and health concerns.

Can Slow turn it around ? Sure.

Will he turn it around ? I wouldn’t bet on it.

At this point, Slow should be regarded as a complete bust. He is not a player the Raids can count on for making any contribution.

Slow was drafted to be the cornerstone of the defense.

He’s been nothing but an immense disappointment.

My guess is that even if he is found not guilty and somehow manages to avoid a suspension, we’ll see the same lackluster play or maybe even a trip to the IR list.

I’ve moved on from Slow. Unless there’s a near miraculous turn of events, it’s probably in the Raids best interest to do so as well.

We’ve got to accept the reality that stories and careers that start out like this rarely turn out well.

Raids need reliable contributors and not headaches.
