Decatur Daily has tape of McClain incident

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 at 12:34 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Decatur Daily has obtained video of the incident that left Raiders middle linebacker Rolando McClain facing chargers of third degree assault, menacing, reckless endangerment and discharging a firearm in the city limits.

The most serious of the allegations, that McClain produced a firearm, put it near the ear of the alleged victim Rishard Tapscott and firing it, are not included. The incident occurred on Nov. 30, when McClain was away from the team because of the death of a relative.

McClain was excused from the Raiders’ voluntary organized team activity session Tuesday, with coach Dennis Allen saying he was dealing with legal issues. He is scheduled to be in court Thursday.

Also charged is Jadoriaus Willingham, who is shown beating Tapscott when the altercation moved from indoors to outdoors.

The attorney for the victim, Carl Cole, believes it bolsters his client’s case.

“It’s obvious that McClain has been edited out of parts of it, but it matches up perfectly with (the victim’s) statements of it,’’ Cole told the Decatur Daily. “I think this shows there may be cracks in Willingham and McClain’s circle of friends. They may not be willing to hide what happened that night.’’

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said on Dec. 1 the league would follow developments in the legal case before determining whether McClain will be subject to discipline under the league’s personal conduct policy.

Well,DMAC,luckily the coaches make those decisions not anyone on this blog.
    ==========

Yeah your right. Just throwing my 2 cents on the table.

  • lefty12

We all want the best players to play and what is best for the team(well, almost all of us).McClain will no doubt be here.Let’s hope he grows up and starts acting like a man instead of some street punk while becoming the player many think he is capable of.

  • RaiderRockstar

Goethel has survived what,3 different coaching staffs,so they all must see something in him.He was a projected starter last year before he got hurt.Lsat year it was even reported on this blog that some of the coaches liked him better in the middle than McClain. If he doesn’t get hurt again,he is the logical choice.

    ***

    Lefty,

I’m in Goethel’s corner. was glad we drafted him out of Arizona. the guy just can’t shake the injury bug. back, knee & ankle injuries are all serious man. He’s really the only downhill player we have at LB if you ask me.

As stated before, I just don’t think he’s up to it physically. He’s the Chaz Schilens of MLB’s if you will. training camp sensation, then out for the season.

  • DonManoukiansNeighbor

    52.
    Bravo! (Clapping)

He needs to ditch his so called friends.

  • DonManoukiansNeighbor

I have to say I like how Curry plays, Top speed all the time. Hope he just gets smarter.

  • alzadoX

for some reason I can’t get that stupid video to play so I guess I’ll have to trust you all for interpreting it. All Semi’s are trustworthy

At least we now have a fullback who does some dumber things as our middle linebacker

    Lefty,

being a good man and a good football player don’t always go hand-in-hand. I could probably overlook some of his off-the-field antics if he was getting it done on Sundays.

But he’s not, so I’m not.

I would say Curry is a downhill player. Wonder if he wouldn’t be better off at ILB. Goethel hopefully is healthy and will compete for spot on roster and maybe starting lineup

  • J Hill

Just can’t believe how big of a deal some of you are making of this McClain “incident”.

Again, ole boy went to his truck and came back with a weapon. If you believe that it is McClain’s voice talking about the gun, he CLEARLY thinks the weapon ole boy went to get was a gun.

I have a hard time believing that if someone at a RRS gathering, or a production put on by Thec got out of line, left, went to their truck, then returned with a weapon that some type of violence would not have occured.

  • lefty12

He was hurt last year.I know many won’t acknowledge it but he was.I never said act like a good man, just grow up and act like a man.Besides, what I might think is a good man,you might consider a heathen.LOL.Just get over the street punk attitude.BTW,I don’t believe his play was as bad as most on here, but he could improve a lot.

Curry came in midseason last year and was thrown into the starting lineup instantly cuz Groves was so lame. Lets see what Curry can do with the normal acclimation time. I believe he was academic all american or all conference and scouts believed he was football smart enough to make him like the 4th player drafted. But that doesn’t matter anymore, what he does starting this year does

I can’t speak for my boy Thec, but I know that here in Podunk we only use guns for hunting & personal protection.

personal protection as in, if somebody breaks into your home or tries to carjack you. nobody is pulling a gun out over any sort of disagreement or scuffle.

  • J Hill

    RRS,

I think I missed your definition of what getting it done on Sundaysbwould mean for McClain.

    Top 10 run defense?

    125 tackles?

    Zero errors per game?

  • J Hill

    RRS,

So you’re saying whoever your boy beats up at your friends get together won’t get mad and go to his truck for a weapon?

    Good for you Podunkians.

Maybe McClain should move to Podunk.

how about some forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, tackles for a loss, no jogging, etc

lets start there. make some impact plays

  • RaiderRockstar

I’m not asking McClain to speak to the media, stay out of trouble, live up to his draft status or go to the Pro Bowl.

I’m just asking him to do his job and NOT be a liability on the football field. we need more assets

  • guest123

Alabama is redneck. But I’ve been to Podunk Mo, and it’s a different kind of podunk. It’s hard to compare them.

  • Thec

    ++++++++++

HA….Suggesting he is even capable of such feats….

  • J Hill

    No jogging???

Don’t know what else you can do on ONE LEG, lol.

    I hear you though.

  • guest123

RoMac’s a punk and I don’t see him changing his off field ways. It’s something he can’t shake. He’s ghetto lifer.

But if he recovers from this and plays to his draft potential, then all is forgiven. But if he continues to act the fool and play the fool, he needs to go.

  • guest123

I have written off RoMac, and don’t expect any return on him. To me he’s a bust and just biding time till his contract becomes cuttable. It’s the character or lack of it that defines him. Punk loser.

I hope Travis Goethel can stay healthy and remove McClain from his spot.

I just don’t see how McClain can hold on to his starting job jogging on the field behind runners on every play.

  • DKnight007

If Crawford and Bilukidi can develop into solid contributors or eventual studs then this first draft of McK’s will be a success.

I’m not worried about Bergstrom, Burris, Criner or even Stupar.

I think all those guys will contribute in some way, especially special teams for Stupar.

Crawford and Bilukidi are the ones that need to step their games up!

    @G123

I understand where you’re coming from. He gets a fresh start just like everybody else on defense heldover from the previous regime, but I’m not putting all my chips in that bucket like JFB & Jhill predicting some huge transformation in YR#3

all the scholarships have term’d. If McClain isn’t getting it done, I firmly expect him to ride the pine. 2012 backup MLB should be somebody better than Blackstock, I would hope.

  • J Hill

    Why is he a punk?

I’m really not saying that he isn’t a punk, but I don’t see how you guys are using this Alabama incident to say he is a punk.

The other guy was beating him up, NOT McClain according to the videos.

McClain getting involved because he thought someone was about to pull a gun makes him a punk?

  • alzadoX

well I finally watched the video. My understanding is that the victim wants to sue McClain in civil court as well as testify in criminal court, and McClain’s attorneys have suggested that he wants to blame the guy with the money- McClain – to get some money out of it.

Victim’s attorney suggests that McClain’s peeps leaked selected videos (don’t show enough to suggest McClain liable for hurting victim).

Pretty obvious McClain was involved in a bad situation and didn’t do anything constructive to mitigate it, at minimum

Video does show McClain’s alleged friend beating the victim

  • J Hill

I have a hard time believing that the best LB in the country coming out of college is a bust.

Definitely needs to be playing ILB like he was in college instead of 4-3 MLB.

If there is a better player on the team, then be all means get that player on the field.

But there is NO doubt that McClain was our best LB last year.

    On ONE leg!

  • J Hill

    Really, G123?

Your interpretation of him in that picture?

One bad moment from a KID?

    Tough crowd.

  • guest123

    JHill,

I’m inclined to believe that RoMac had many moments to mitigate the situation, be the peacemaker, or at a minimum walk away and hail a taxi. But he’s neck deep in something behind the scenes and it was worth it to him to be part of the escalation.

To me, that’s more than one spontaneous bad moment. That’s a series of bad moments based on poor decisions and I suspect it’s been that way his whole life. Again, pardon my suspicion which cannot be proven, but that’s what it looks like.

odds are about 10:1 you’re right about McClain in the picture. But it is possible that the police were twisting him to handcuff or get him in the car and he smiled and tilted his head in the process and the photo was snapped at that time. Obviously the Decatur Daily and their cameraman were alerted of the upcoming arrest by police. Certainly the photo looks bad and probably is what it appears to be but can’t tell for sure

In any case, I hope Rolando realizes after the second incident there (someone shot at his vehicle a few months earlier) that he should try some combination of avoiding Decatur and/or taking precautions to avoid problems if/when he feels he needs to be there; and make some decisions about who are really his friends going forward.

Hopefully he can get his mind on becoming a better football player instead of loser behavior

  • guest123

    I agree with you AlzadoX,

RoMac should avoid Decatur altogether. He can’t trust his own judgment in handling family/friends in certain situations and he has to realize it. It’s sad that a true moment of sorrow for his grandfather’s death could ever be tainted by a ghetto gun flashing incident. What does he need to be hanging with these people for? RoMac doesn’t understand who he is.

  • ottocrat

    CUT HIM, MICK!

  • Cervantes

Man, I’ve been in plenty of fights and plenty of play fights that escalated a little bit with friends.

That was a play fight AND the guy that was on the ground willingly took things out of his pocket, went outside, AND threw the first punch.

Man on top of him wasn’t punching him nearly as hard as he could have or taking as many shots to the head as he could have.

How THAT winds up in court is BS and a waste of Tax Payer Money, especially when a shot is fired, no one is hit and there are no witnesses. No way that even gets files if RoMac’s not there.

BS. RoMac has a lot to prove on the field, but anyone who hates on him for that is just hating for the sake of hate.

If you don’t want to fight then don’t go outside and apologize for what you said. But if you go outside AND throw the first punch…hard to look at that as Assault.

Thus the 3rd degree charge. No way it sticks.

  • J Hill

    His whole life?

Is there a history of him thuggin it up?

Someone shot as his car his rookie year, and now this.

    What else have I missed?

Someone shooting at your car doesn’t make YOU the bad guy, I thought it made you the victim?

  • Lowdown_in_Beijing

    Romac = camp body.
