Raiders add veteran fullback
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 at 12:03 am in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders concluded a busy day Tuesday by signing veteran fullback Owen Schmitt.
Schmitt, 27, spent the past two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles after a two-year stint with the Seattle Seahawks. He appeared in 61 games during his first four NFL seasons.
Schmitt, 6-feet-2 and 245 pounds, is a punishing blocker, especially in the run game. The Raiders currently have Marcel Reece and Manase Tonga at fullback on their roster.
However, it’s conceivable that Schmitt could force out Tonga at some point, given he has more experience.

where is Tonga anyway? Not at OTA. Tonga is old too even though he’s only played 1 year in NFL, 2 incl. practice squad.

Its so early but just the way the organization and trial of players using all avenues. I cant contain my enthusiasm for this team and organization. Once again its great to be a raiderfan. Things are gonna change for the better. I ll be even more excited once we get that franchise Qb down the road. Go raiders forever

Awesome signing. It’s about time we had a proper fullback. Who was the last one with potential, Oren O’Neal? This guy’s going to leave a helmet-print on Chargers, Broncos, and Chiefs all year long. Booyah!

Makes sense to go after Schmitt considering he played under Greg Knapp for the Seahawks in ‘09. He’s started more games for them (30)than Reece has for us (26). He’s also been a very good special teams player so that’s a bonus. Tonga may be on his way out if he can’t step up his game.
May 16th, 2012 at 5:41 am
Good Morning Nation!!!
It will be an interesting battle for FB opposite Reece…or maybe, if Reece doesn’t sign. You never know!
May 16th, 2012 at 5:44 am
I can also see what the Raiders offense is gonna be like with this signing.
All about subterfuge. Having Scmitt in on say 1st and 2nd down, or on 3rd and short, double TE set from the singleback, or a straight-up I-formation, obvious run situation, play-action fake to McFadden, springs Denarius Moore or David Ausberry deep like that Texans TD they did on us last season.
Then other times having Reece in, giving the impression of a pass play, but running the ball with Reece blocking.
All mixed in with times when Schmitt bludgeons open holes for Dmac, and times when Reece motions out to the slot or from the FB position runs out to the flats in the redzone for an easy reception TD in the corner.

Reece is a lock once he finally signs his tender. I think Schmitt pushes Tonga and Robinson off the roster. I hear he’s a tough guy, and we’ve needed someone like that especially now that we are going back to the WCO offense with zone blocking.

Should be an interesting year! Glad to see McFadden at what he says is full strength! Now, if we can keep that guy off the injury list…

It’s good that we are kicking tires on a Fullback but Schmitt may not be all that good.
In 4 years he has started 2 games for Seattle and 10 for Philly.
Some stuff from the web:
“The former Seahawks and Eagles lead blocker was rated as one of the league’s least effective fullbacks in 2011 by Pro Football Focus.”
“Consider this (per Pro Football Focus): In 2010, Owen Schmitt played in 33 percent of the team’s offensive snaps. In 2011, that number dwindled down to just 16 percent.”
From a Seattle blog:
“Outlook: Schmitt is nearing the dangerous place in an athlete’s career where they are as much mascot as player. That’s no good. It’s not good for Owen and it’s not good for Seattle…
Schmitt should have spent last season taking his lumps and learning his trade, but with Greg Knapp came Justin Griffith, and with Griffith came a sham preseason competition decided in Griffith’s favor.
So Schmitt spent much of the season playing special teams and seeing only occasional snaps. Schmitt seemed very much the same player at the end of the season as he was at the beginning: tough, quick, punishing and not ready for Sunday at fullback.
He needs work pass blocking and pass receiving. He needs to be targeted in traffic and show the same kind of poise facing imminent contact an NFL defenders as he does facing imminent bashing of his skull with a helmet.
Schmitt has the potential to be a great run blocker, but he doesn’t see holes particularly well, especially compared to Justin Griffith, and he needs experience to learn. Most important and most glaring, Schmitt needs to recognize a free pass rusher and prove he can hit and sustain.
Schmitt is just 25. He isn’t expensive. He does enough on special teams to continue in a reduced role. But he hasn’t grown much since being drafted and he hasn’t won over any coach or proven he can play fullback at the NFL level.
That is a bad mixture for a rough, not terribly athletic player. I think Schmitt has the will and fight to stick in the NFL, but where and doing what?.”

from sfgate….
Here is the group interview with Carson Palmer after the organized team workout on Tuesday:
Q: What stood out to you today?
A: It’s just the second OTA but just a really good chance for us to
come out and work on all the little things we’ve been working on in
the meetings and the playbooks. Just a chance to really get on the
field and run around and make some plays. The good thing is there
weren’t a lot of false starts or silly penalties and that’s something
that Coach came in from the first day and really harped on was we’re
not going to beat ourselves, we’re not going to give up the yardage
we’ve given up in the past. It’s good to see that we’re changing up
snap counts and doing different looks and formations. Penalty-free day
and that’s always good. But a lot of football to go, a lot of OTAs
left and a lot of work today.
Q: You joined the team in the middle of the year last year. How
important is it to you to get this full offseason and training camp?
A: It’s great. It’s great. Just getting a chance to know the playbook,
one, and get really comfortable wit the playbook in a practice
environment, in a non-live environment. But also getting used to the
personnel, the new personnel, the personnel that’s been here for a
while and getting used to guys running different routes and guys’ body
language, knowing certain routes guys like and where they like to
catch the ball on certain routes. It’s been great to train and get the
offseason training in, but also get to get out on the field and run
around and put the offense to work.
Q: What’s it like to have McFadden out there?
A: Awesome. He caught a screen today and did something that probably
not many players in the league can do. You get kind of, you can’t
watch him at my position. You’ve got to go through your progression,
you’ve got to go through your footwork, your hand placement, and then
do the bootlegs and not turn around to see what he does. That’s the
hardest thing for me right now is you want to watch him cause he’s so
electrifying and he can do so many different things. But I have a job
on bootlegs and things like that and I have to make sure I get him the
ball and then boot, but getting him on the field is just something the
defense has to key on and really focus on and it’s been great to work
with.
Q: How different is bootlegs and all that stuff for you to do? How
different is this from what you’ve run in the past and how are you
adjusting?
A: I haven’t done a lot, didn’t do much of it last year and a couple
years before that, but have done a ton of it in my career early on and
in college, did a ton of different nakeds and keepers and boots and
stuff like that. It really suits me well, it suits our personnel well
with some of the guys we have on the outside. They’re not stopping and
starting. They’re just putting their foot in the ground and going in a
certain direction and using their speed, and we’re exploiting their
speed with some of that stuff. It’s going to be really exciting and
when you’ve got McFadden back there and you’ve got to worry about him
actually getting the ball in the running game and all of a sudden you
realize it’s a pass after a play action, it puts a lot of stress on
the defense.
Q: Speaking of college, Matt Leinart. No getting away from him huh?
A: Yeah, yeah. Just got here last week. It’s been great to have him.
He’s been in this offense I think going on three years now so he knows
it inside and out, he’s been with Coach Knapp before and he’s been
great for Terrelle Pryor and I to kind of ask questions here and there
and ask him how he reads things. It’s one thing for a coach to tell
you something and a coach to coach you up on something but when
there’s a guy that has done the reps before and execute a play a
certain way, being a player it hits you a little bit different when
you get coached up from another player.
Q: What did you like that you saw from Criner today?
A: Made a couple great catches. And I think he proved that if you give
him a chance he’ll go up and get it. So he’s an exciting young guy,
Streater’s another exciting young guy. You don’t get a ton of draft
picks but there’s a lot of rookies here that are trying to figure
things out and when you stick out like that being a young guy and
you’re kind of the guy everybody’s talking about who made the most
plays, it gets guys excited, it makes other guys at the same position
realize there’s going to be a lot of competition there, so the thing
he has to do is continue that carry that through the rest of this
OTAs.
Q: Speaking of that competition, Bush is gone and you’re looking at
McFadden and who else can step up in that role. What are you seeing so
far?
A: It’s going to be a battle. That one’s going to go well into
training camp. You got Taiwan, who has shown tons of explosiveness and
done a lot of great things, Mike Goodson’s been making plays. There’s
a lot of guys that want to be McFadden’s backup, there’s a lot of guys
that are fighting for that job so that’s going to be an important
thing for us once we get into the third, fourth preseason game and
figure out who’s going to be in the roster and who’s going to be the
backup.
Q: Carson you spent a lot of time in Cincinnati and been here less
than a year. How’s your comfort level here in Oakland?
A: Very comfortable. Just getting comfortable with the playbook is one
thing but as far as being an Oakland resident, very comfortable, very
happy. It’s been great.
Q: How’s Terrelle developed with having a full offsesason?
A: He was in a tough spot last year. He kind of got robbed of an
offseason. That’s really when young guys develop is this time of year
and without all the OTAs and mini-camps and training camps, this is
really his rookie year. And he can’t look at it that way and he and I
have talked about that, but he just wants to get better every day and
he wants to improve every little thing he can. He’s got the perfect
mindset to be a young guy that’s learning a new offense. He
understands that there is a lot of room for improvement, and he’s
willing and wants to hear any criticism he can because he just wants
to get better every day. It’s fun to be around a young guy like that
that’s champing at the bit to get in there and get reps and wants to
steal your reps and wants to get in there and compete, but it’s been
great to be around.
Q: What kind of weapon do you think you’ll have in Denarius Moore?
A: I think Denarius is just going to build on last year and that’s
what he needs to do. He made spectacular plays, he made tough plays,
he made easy plays, plays in the return game, plays in the running
game on blocking but also in reverses. He kind of did a little bit of
everything. I think this year he can kind of really put it all
together and kind of be a complete player. He’s so explosive and can
do so many things down the field, but for him to take that next step
he needs to get more balls that aren’t deep balls or big posts down
the field for touchdowns. He needs to catch slants and curls and digs
and things like that. And the way things are lined up he’s the guy.
He’s our X receiver and I’m excited for him. I know he’s excited about
this year and he’s got a lot to prove.

May 16th, 2012 at 6:17 am
The Seattle stuff was after his first 2 seasons, their Coaching Staff apaprently agreed with the blog guys because they did not brought him back for 2010.
In 2010 he had his best year, Philly’s # 1 FB Leonard Weaver was lot in week 1 and they picked up Schmitt, but the Eagles don’t use the FB much.
So in fairness to Schmitt, he was denied a chance in Seattle or was beaten by an older Justin Griffith and in Philliy they didn’t have much use for him.
Maybe he caught a break here because we will use a FB most of the time, it’s his chance to show he can play.
But remember the role of a Fullback in the ZBS is different than in other schemes, it’s not just hammering heads with LB’s, you need to read the blocking like the Half Back does and then clear the way, athleticism and smarts are the key elements.
May 16th, 2012 at 6:19 am
I don’t see the point in bashing Marcel Reece. It’s inevitable that he signs his tender. You may not like his attitude now, but once he signs he’s going to be the same matchup nightmare he’s always been and will be a big part of this offense.
Why Reece is refusing to sign makes no sense to me other than a few more vacation days. But it won’t matter once the season starts.

Philly doesn’t really use their FB’s anyway. It’s doubtful that Scmitt or Griffith was a big deal to them.
Schmitt is 27 yo now, and two years have passed since that scouting report/blog. It takes some guys years to learn how to be an effective blocker.

not surprised Reece is a better receiver, didn’t he play WR for the Washington Huskies??
he was an all-world WR in high school, too
maybe the traditional FB beastly run blocker is being phased out?
May 16th, 2012 at 6:44 am
At least we have one of the best ZBS Fullbacks to play the game in Justin Griffith as Quality Control Coach, he’s not RB’s Coach but he was out there on the field during minicamps giving pointers so he should be very helpful in turning Reece or Schmitt into good ZBS blockers.
“In Knapp’s offense, the fullback must think like a tailback just to block the right defensive player. Instead of being assigned a specific player to block, the fullback must read the defense and react on the fly. It’s not an easy task.
“It’s really important with our outside zone run game, where he is the lead guy,” Knapp said of the fullback.
“We teach our fullbacks to read it like the halfback. There are certain indicators based on the run call that’s being made. He has to see it the same way we want the halfback to see it, so he’ll lead that halfback to the right hole. He is kind of that floating guy, where if the defense overflows, he can cut back and clean up the backside.
“If they try to stunt inside, he makes that read and bounces it out and the running back follows him. So there’s a lot of burden on him in identifying what’s the correct path in the run game.”
May 16th, 2012 at 6:46 am
Schmitt has a few screws loose. Busted up his forehead with his own helmet. Broke a dozen or so facemasks in college too. Nice to see that kind of crazy streak in a FB. Reminds me a little of Jon Ritchie and his blood dripping off his nose. We could use that kind of psycho blowing up LB’s.

Based on what?.
“The former Seahawks and Eagles lead blocker was rated as one of the league’s least effective fullbacks in 2011 by Pro Football Focus.”
I don’t have the info on Reece but we were one of the top rushing teams last year, I’m guessing Reece had something to with it.
Anyway, the role of the FB will change now that Knapp is here, see post # 39 and the following Justin Griffith quote:
“I’m not a throwback guy at all,” Griffith says. “I’ve been fortunate and blessed to be a part of this offense most of my career. It doesn’t beat you up. There aren’t a lot of isolations, power blocking and all that kind of stuff. We’re a zone-scheming team. And I get to catch the ball, too.”

By the way, not much “clean house” on the scouting deparment after all, 8 of the 14 people listed are returning from the previous staff.
Teddy Atlas, scouting coordinator—holdover.
Calvin Branch, college scout—holdover.
Joey Clinkscales, director – player personnel—new
Zack Crockett, college scout—holdover.
Tom Delaney, director – football admin.—holdover.
Shaun Herock, director – college scouting—-new.

***
huh?
Steve is a writer. if a Head Coach takes something from a journalist as a reason or whether or not to prepare for a ballgame, that falls on the doofus HC!
Steve calls it like he sees it. If he called DHB the 4th WR in camp last year, it’s probably because 3 other guys looked better than him at the time. Jerry Mac always called Chaz the unquestionned #1 WR in camp, so I’m guessing Chaz, Jacoby & Denarius played better in OTA’s & camp , but DHB produced during the regular season (when it matters). so what?
Jerry Mac also loved him some Nick Miller, if I recall. Said Tommy Kelly has never played in a 3-4 defense. constantly posts links for us to read from his rival newspaper journalists. There is a reason he got demoted from blog pimp. I don’t miss him.
Keep up the good work, Steve!

We lost so many games the last few years that were winnable, 7 pts or less. 8-8 both last two seasons, would’ve made the playoffs. Even that year we went 5-11 with Fargas as RB, we lost like 5-6 games by 7 or less by memory.
Only blowout wins we’ve had recently was that run of a few games in 2010 with Cable HC Hue OC. But they dried up after that.
Our biggest win last year I think was the Jets win with Dmac running wild. Won by only 10-14.

Well,there are 3 Directors listed:
Clinkscales is Director of Football Operations, seems like he oversees everything.
Herock is Director of College Scouting, this guy seems limited to the scouting side.
Tom Delaney is Director of Football Administration, I guess this position is more involved with contracts since DA said previously he was working with Delaney on the nuances of the new CBA.

Steve was offered his readers hope. he was being optimistic. would you rather he have said “expect the Raiders to crumble, as always” or “prepare for another 8-8 year watching the playoffs from the couch” ??
then if the Raiders win that game he looks like a total hater!! Raiders were 3-0 against the Chargers before the Week 17 loss. That was with a couple of knucklehead DC’s like Marshall & Bresnahan. It was a game we should have won, but lost. Blame Hue Jackson for that – not Steve Corkran

Yup, It was Denver then Seattle that we beat pretty good in 2010. The only game I can remember us having a pretty good handle on before that was the Miami game when Kiffin was the coach. I believe Lamont Jordan and fargas played pretty well. It’s been slim picking when we talk about Raider blowouts.

Ford fell down on that one, didn’t he? I don’t think it would have mattered. I think the game changer would have been if the KO resulted in a safety instead of a half yard line that the next play was ran for 40 yards!

It’s a new year, and it was a very different Terrelle Pryor we saw Tuesday at the Raiders’ first public organized team activities — and afterward.
First, Pryor looked pretty sharp during the practice and seemed very comfortable in quarterback drills alongside Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart . . . particularly Palmer.
Then Pryor stepped out for the media availability period and talked calmly, confidently, clearly and with more detail than he ever has during his brief Raiders career.
He acknowledged he was sort of a ghost as a rookie last year — showing up late as a supplemental draft pick, then having to serve his NFL-mandated five-game suspension, then having to play catch up as he dealt with the cacophony of the Raiders’ 2011 late-season.
Some highlights . . .
Pryor clearly embraces the presence of Palmer as a mentor and of quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo as a hands-on instructor.
Palmer is a constant and helpful resource, Pryor said, and DeFilippo has worked on his footwork and body position — with noticeable results.
Yep, last year the Raiders didn’t have a quarterback coach.
“I mean, I never heard of that before,” Pryor said with a smile. “I didn’t know what I was getting into coming in here. It’s definitely great that Mr. McKenzie got a quarterback coach because I’m learning a lot.”
May 16th, 2012 at 7:27 am

I’m not comparing Aaron Rodgers to Carson Palmer..Rodgers has proved he’s at a higher level RIGHT NOW for sure but looking at what GB has done over the yrs. i think Reggie realizes you can build a team with quality ‘no names’ etc. who are “football players” but he knows you gotta have those big timers in the key positions..such as QB and on the d line.
GB doesn’t win the SB w/o Reggie White..and they paid him big $$$. Also the QB position..most important in sports. Hence Favre and Rodgers…and now…Palmer, who he hopes can be that QB stud until he’s not.

It’s also an on-going pleasure reading all these quotes from Pryor and his teammates and coaches that show how dedicated he is etc.

http://www.silverandblackpride.com/2012/5/15/3022988/oakland-raiders-terrelle-pryor-is-not-planning-to-be-the-backup
—-
Second-year quarterback Terrelle Pryor is in his first OTA’s for the Raiders. He is out to prove not only that he can play quarterback in the NFL but that he deserves playing time for the Raiders. This is a tough, and could be futile, task for the young quarterback. Carson Palmer is the unquestioned starter and at this point, Pryor is behind Matt Leinart in the depth chart.
Pryor is not letting that dampen his belief that his playing time is directly attributed to how hard to works. He even deflected any discussion about his recent interview with Sports Illustrated, saying “I’m not going to talk about that. That’s in the past.”
Putting that stuff in the past is a wise move for Pryor. His focus should be on what is happening now and how it affects his future. In the realm of the present and future, Pryor’s statement is simply “I’m competing to play.”
Star-divide
Most will say that his only role on this team would involve his legs but he insists he is not just a specialty package type quarterback and should be thought of with the same passing skills as Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart… and more.
“I got a big arm too,” said an adamant Pryor. “A big arm. I just happen to be able to run and that just adds onto my arsenal. If you go throughout the reads and do the right progression and throw the ball to the right spot where you want it to be, and if nothing’s there and I take off, then that’s a plus.”
But even with the vast skill set Pryor claims to have, he still has an uphill battle.
“Carson is the starter and he’s going to be the starter. But I don’t put myself as I’m going to be back-up. I mean, I don’t sit around saying, ‘I want to be a back-up, that’s what I want to be.’ That’s not how I operate. That’s not how I want to be. I’m going to work to play. And Carson’s always played well and always will. Whenever the opportunity comes for me to play, I’ll play. But I’m not planning to be a back-up. Get that correct.”
That certainly is the right attitude when it comes to playing. Too many times in the NFL the starter goes down and the backup isn’t ready. It happened last season with Kyle Boller and the result was a disaster. Even with Leinart as the projected number two quarterback and is running with the second team, if Pryor can instill some confidence in his coaches that he gives the team a better chance to win, he will be given the chance to prove it.
“You need a quarterback to know what’s going on and be able to lead the team,” said Pryor. “I’m not discouraged at all that Matt [Leinart] is here. Matt’s a great guy and I’m going to go about my business getting better and working hard and no one out-working me. That’s how I live and that’s how I do things every day, and it won’t change.”
Pryor got a boost in confidence earlier this week when the team released Rhett Bomar. Head coach Dennis Allen said Tuesday that Bomar was released because he was just not going to see the reps with the Raiders that he had hoped.
So while the team may feel more comfortable with Leinart as the number two, they clearly have laid it out that Pryor is going to be a member of this team. Pryor’s outlook seems to improve almost daily and is a far cry from what it was last season. It has been a long hard road for him of which he said has left him “humbled” and now in a far better place.
“Big big huge improvement,” said Pryor of the results of his offseason work. “Really just footwork and having a chance to learn the offense. I didn’t know anything last year, nothing at all. I knew some of the stuff going into games and stuff like that but starting from Day 1 here right now when the new coaches came in. On the other hand I came in last year at the end of camp and everything was already put in. I couldn’t ask the coach, the offensive coordinator. We didn’t even have a quarterbacks coach so I couldn’t even learn anything from that standpoint.
“I [have] spent a lot of time with Coach DiFilipio and I cleaned up the footwork, taking my feet in my progression and nothing but good results.
“Big time in terms of footwork, confidence, believing in myself. All of that stuff is miles ahead with more great things to come.”
Though Pryor had just one unofficial snap in the NFL last season, he is technically a second-year player. And according to him, that is not just a technicality. He doesn’t feel like a rookie.
“What I can say about last year is I learned the speed of the corners, I learned what the NFL is, in terms of, you have to get back and get rid of the ball. The rush is between the D-linemen getting to you, nothing else… So I learned the speed of the D-linemen, you’ve got to get the ball out fast because of them. You’ve got to throw at different angles.
“I’d say this is my second year. Because I learned an awful lot by taking snaps against the first team in… the practice-role doing the scout team. I learned a lot in terms of physical stuff like that.”
As far as Pryor’s work in practice, he is much improved from what limited looks we had of him last season, but he has a long way to go.
The “big arm” he touts is fine but it is rarely ever just about how far a quarterback can throw it. It is about touch and accuracy which are both areas he still has much room to improve. His passes still flutter some and it is easy to see that he doesn’t trust his short passes. They usually either have nothing behind them or they are ankle biters.
His footwork and stance have improved greatly and it has shown in his passes. While it used to be a case of the rare tight spiral or the rare on-target pass, they are more 50-50 now. And there was one particular long pass that led Juron Criner perfectly for a would-be touchdown.
For now, however, he has impressed his offensive coordinator and head coach enough with his work ethic and improvement to give him sole possession of the number three job with an opportunity to earn more.
That is “competing to play” and that is all he can ask for at this point.

A real blocking FB might make it easier for us to convert on a 3rd and long 2. Of the backs likely to make the team (McFadden, Jones and Goodson) McFadden should get all of the carries inside the red zone and in short yardage situations. He is our most powerful back, and has been for years despite the coaching staff giving the rock to Twinkle Toes Bush simply because he was fat the past few seasons.

Sign the tender, play the deal, and if you perform you WILL have the leverage for more money. Reece’s problem is that, no matter how explosive he can be, he isn’t a natural fit at any position. To big for WR, can’t block well enough for TE/FB. I think he is closest to a natural RB2, but I don’t know that he can carry an extended load of 20 times a game.
May 16th, 2012 at 8:38 am

Reece has been explosive in very limited duty. You cant compare that to Sproles. Reece aint Sproles by a country mile.
I like Reece a lot, but to throw a few million dollars at what amounts to a gimmick player is how Al Davis ran the show, not how I want Reg to run the show.
May 16th, 2012 at 8:46 am
Stanford throws to the fb as its 1st option on like 35% of there pass plays.. we could truly have too many weapons on the field with reece out there.. Schmitts just a small guard.

He got paid 12+ million dollars, tore his shoulder up, went on to NO, got himself a very nice contract and a super bowl ring, and is now lined up to get a deal that is going to average 20 million a year.
If you get hurt on your tender, it sucks, but if you are a performer it wont stop you from getting paid.
Leon Washington gambled on himself in the final year of his deal, we broke his leg (pretty brutally)… he still got a job in seattle making decent coin.
May 16th, 2012 at 8:47 am
You will have a harder time getting paid if you refuse to sign your tender and sit out a year, than if you sign it, perform on it and get hurt.
May 16th, 2012 at 8:49 am
I’m not hating on Reece for not showing up now anyways… he better be there bright eyed and bushy tailed for training camp though.

No, he does not have a lot of leverage. But I can’t fault him for using what little leverage he has to try and get a new deal. Of course when push comes to shove, he is going to sign it and play in 2012 at $540k. It will just be a matter of how much reggie values him long-term.
He may be the best backup RB to McFadden we have on the roster!

Reece has no leverage. That’s what happens when you sign a UDFA contract. He signs the tender or loses a year of eligibility and comes back next year for the same $540K. If you’re smart with your money, you can make that go a long way. It sure beats working at KFC.

May 16th, 2012 at 8:54 am
Reece was a Pro Bowl alternate…those are chosen by the coaches if I’m not mistaken, he has earned a fair deal after proving himself, definitely not a minimum salary guy.
May 16th, 2012 at 8:55 am
If Reece doesn’t like his options, then tough. The union that represents him negotiated a CBA wherein players finishing their third year are ERFAs and cannot test the free market.
For a fullback who’s an average blocker (at best) and has yet to gain 900 yards from scrimmage IN HIS ENTIRE CAREER, $540K for one year is fine. He needs to sign it and get in here. After the season’s over, he can walk if he feels so incredibly disrespected.
May 16th, 2012 at 8:57 am
@Raider O:
$540K is still better than $7.51/hr last I checked. And the idea of taking less money than market value is not a novel concept. People take less money/benefits all the time in exchange for better job security.
Reece has a chance here to take the sure money and live to play for another day and another contract.

I know the NFL is a business, but Reece was an Al Davis project/schlorship player, may not have still been in the league if the Raiders did not convert him from WR to FB. Raiders showed a lot of patience in delvoping him. Still would like to see the Raiders offer him a contract…

May 16th, 2012 at 9:07 am
I got a chance to meet Reece a 2 years ago. He’s a good dude and plays hard. Like my brother from another mother said, he outperformed his contract.
May 16th, 2012 at 9:08 am
@ Raider O,
Like Duck said, the union who negotiated the last CBA should be where Reece should take his frustration out on. CEO’s of corporations are free agents who jump ship for megabucks after a good quarter. They don’t have the same constraints.
But having said all that, I feel for Reece. He has outperformed his contract. But still there isn’t any guarantee that he’ll be as big a factor as was under Hue. The new system may not be a fit for him. It goes both ways.
May 16th, 2012 at 9:09 am
The guaranteed portion of the contract has nothing to do with injury. Look at PM.

I know I said Reggie should throw Reece a bone and give him a small deal, but ultimately I am with Reggie in whatever he decides is best with Reece. If Reggie wants to go with a more traditional blocking FB in Schmitt, I am all for that. I have wanted a good FB in here since we lost one of our best young draft pick Orenthal O’Neal!
Losing that dude was a much larger blow to the Raiders than many realize. He was the real deal. What a shame.
So, if Reggie doesn’t think Reece will fit in with what we are doing, then I am cool with that…..but I still think he might be our best bet to backup McFadden.

“TAMPA, Fla. — Running back LeGarrette Blount and receiver Preston Parker have signed exclusive-rights tender offers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The third-year pros will earn about $540,000 next season. Meanwhile, the Bucs announced third-string quarterback Rudy Carpenter was waived on Wednesday.
Blount led Tampa Bay in rushing the past two seasons, gaining 1,007 yards as a rookie in 2010 and finishing with 781 yards and five touchdowns last year.
Parker had 40 catches for 554 yards and three TDs in 2011.”

My dad was a heavy drinker, never missed a day of work despite how he looked or felt in the morning. Basically said the same thing to me. He was no hypocrite.
One day I came home at the crack of dawn, still buzzing from partying and on the cusp of a massive hangover. He didn’t scold me, just smiled and had me put in the hardest day of work I’d ever put in. I didn’t complain, so everything was cool. It wouldn’t have helped to complain anyway. lol
Yup! My dad a few times went to the bar downstairs from his work…went upstairs to sleep, then woke up and went right into the office!

If you know the rules of collecting unemployment (which I do, it is my job) you would know that 1. You cant collect unemployment if you have another job, and 2. there is a minimum number of service weeks required to collect unemployment… and just to add insult to injury, I have plenty of documentation to back up his termination. I didn’t just decide yesterday to let him go. He is NOT eligible for unemployment. He won’t even be eligible to file and get his case heard by a judge.

Also: A lot of companies today have reduced their middle management position to cheap labor, just like the rest of the workforce. The manager might get a few cents more per hour, but basically the real perk is just getting to boss people around. They purposely hire the type of people that would find joy in just being the boss of their peers, and who really have no other skill or intelligence.

Hwnrdr,
I’ve heard Bill Belicheck regarding OTA’s…really only good for teaching rather than evaluating. Stars in OTA’s sometimes never carry thru to preseason and stars in preseason never make it to reg season. It’s really early, and as fans we all want some sort of feedback, but we all need to be patient.
May 16th, 2012 at 9:58 am
Bcz, you implied several times that it was up to your company who gets unemployment, right alongside your boasts of terminating employees. That’s why I corrected you in the first place. I wouldn’t have brought it up otherwise. And, you even tried to argue against it a couple of times. Now you’re doing the whole, “Show me where I said” thing. Hilarious.
May 16th, 2012 at 10:01 am
The judge doesn’t decide who gets UE. 1st you apply, they qualify you, and if you don’t qualify, then you can have a judge hear your case (Hearing). Employer has the right to fight it too.
May 16th, 2012 at 10:03 am

Do you really have to argue with it? Why bother bro. Let’s talk more about Reece being a Free Agent.
May 16th, 2012 at 10:03 am
boast:
verb (used without object)
1. to speak with exaggeration and excessive pride, especially about oneself.
2. to speak with pride (often followed by of ): He boasted of his family’s wealth.
3. to speak of with excessive pride or vanity: He boasts himself a genius.
4. to be proud in the possession of: The town boasts a new school.
**************
I don’t think Bcz did anything at all resembling “boasting” about firing anyone. Ridiculous accusation.
May 16th, 2012 at 10:04 am
Reece = Free Agent (restricted)
Is he free to sign with another team? No
Is he under contract? No
Can he demand a LT contract? Yes

Again you are wrong. Bcz/company can appeal the ruling of the administrator who reviews the case and deems that the fired individual is able to receive unemployment benefits.
•A person who quits work or is fired from work will be scheduled to a telephone interview because there is a separation issue that must be resolved.
The Department interviewer obtains and documents information about the separation from the employer and claimant and decides, according to law and regulations, if the person is eligible to collect benefits. The Department mails a notice to the claimant who is not eligible for benefits. The Department mails a notice to the employer who responded timely to the notice of claim filed. The notice advises the employer about whether the claimant is eligible or not, and whether the employer’s account will be charged for benefits paid to the former employee. Either party can disagree with an unfavorable decision and file an appeal.
May 16th, 2012 at 10:05 am
No. I gave you the reasons why he wouldn’t qualify. I never said that my company determined his eligiblity, you just inferred that, as you infer a lot of things when you go trolling. I also never ‘boasted’ about firing him, I mearly mentioned it since it was a fitting point to the conversation I was having.
To recap, the terminated employee does not meet the NYS minimum requirements for unemployment, I have proper documentation for his termination and his employed by another business as well. Were he to apply for unemployment, his claim will quickly be denied by the NYS labor board, however IF he so chooses, he has the legal right to file an appeal of the labor boards decision, in which case a judge will review the information provided, and ultimately deny his claim for the reasons I have already stated. Thanks for playing troll.

Raider O,
You don’t even make sense. You contradicted yourself. First you say that a judge doesn’t decide, then you say that they do in the appeal process. Duh, what do you think an appeal is? That’s part of the process. Everyone that gets rejected for unemployment appeals right way, then, again, a judge decides.
The firing company does not ultimately decide who gets unemployment, only a judge does. So it’s stupid for someone who represents a company to say who will or won’t get unemployment. Unless they have a judge in their pocket, they have no say in it. They’re talking out of their ass.

Dutch, why are you doing this to yourself? Anyone can appeal unemployment benefits, either side. Judge ultimately presides over appeals. It will all come down to appeals, despite the requirements. The requirements are guidelines, nothing more. Unless the applicant becomes overwhelmed and just gives up before the appeal process plays out, a judge and a judge only is all who can reject someone’s unemployment benefits.

Again, if you don’t qualify, you can appeal! That’s what Dutch and Bcz clearly don’t understand. The rejection of the application is the beginning of the process. These companies always love to get all macho mouth about who gets unemployment, it’s a tactic which discourages people from applying for benefits. That’s what BCz and Dutch are doing right now. Understand, that you can appeal your rejection, appeal a decision by a judge to cancel benefits, and honestly, I’m not even sure there’s a limit to appeals. It would just take so much time, all the while you’re not getting any money. But nonetheless, the appeal process is open to both sides at all times, and a judge ultimately makes the decision in the appeals process.
May 16th, 2012 at 10:18 am
Sign the tender, play the deal, and if you perform you WILL have the leverage for more money. Reece’s problem is that, no matter how explosive he can be, he isn’t a natural fit at any position. To big for WR, can’t block well enough for TE/FB. I think he is closest to a natural RB2, but I don’t know that he can carry an extended load of 20 times a game.
I’m not hating on Reece for not showing up now anyways… he better be there bright eyed and bushy tailed for training camp though.

Alright, got to run. And in case Dutch or Bcz try to come back and post a bunch of huge copy and paste requirements for unemployment, remember, anyone can appeal the process at any time, and a judge ultimately decides! Don’t let them mislead you. Good day.

Quarterback Carson Palmer said both sides won when the Cincinnati Bengals traded him to the Oakland Raiders last season.
PalmerNot sure whether we should file this under “What did you really expect him to say” or “Players are sometimes delusional about their own situation.” Palmer made this comment when asked if he needed to patch things up with his former team.
“It was time to move on and it was time for them to move on,” Palmer said Monday on the Dan Patrick Show, “and they’re in a better place and I’m definitely in a better place.”
Palmer added, “I think in the years to come both organizations will look back and say this thing was the best thing to happen.”
It’s fair to say that Palmer’s time with the Bengals had run its course. But it’s inaccurate to say both organizations are happy with the results, at least based on last season.
The Bengals went to the playoffs with new quarterback Andy Dalton and received two additional draft picks (including cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick in the first round this year) in the deal with Oakland. Palmer ended up going 4-5 as the Raiders’ starter and lost the head coach (Hue Jackson) who spearheaded the move to get him to Oakland. The Bengals even ended up with Jackson as an assistant. Not sure how Palmer is counting, but this was a win-win-win for Cincinnati.
For Palmer to justify Oakland giving up a first-round pick in 2012 and a second-rounder in 2013, he has to do more than lead the Raiders to the playoffs. He has to win postseason games and a good number of them. Some might say Palmer would have to guide Oakland to the Super Bowl to validate what the Raiders gave up for him.

@DMN
I would love to have Palmer lead us to a SB victory, as any Raider fan would. Is that a realistic expectation based upon our record the past 9 years? especially with a brand spanking new GM, HC & DC? I don’t think so. I’ll be pleased if we make the playoffs this year & next. 2014 we can hopefully make that leap. It’ll take Reggie a while to form “his team” , purging the dead weight, acquiring talent, developing players and getting the cap in order. Looking at the QB play we’ve had since Rich Gannon, I’ll gladly make that trade to Cincy again. You can’t win without a QB. Plus the Raiders haven’t hit on many 1st rounders in the past anyways.

Don,
I’d like to hear more analysis of the Cutler deal as compared to Palmer.
TWO 1st. rounders, a 3rd AND a bonafide starter in Kyle Orton.
How many SB’s has Cutler won with the Bears so far?
Palmer has played half a season so far. Maybe he should be given a little more rope and see how it plays out over a period of time.
May 16th, 2012 at 11:36 am
Merrill Hoge is the 1st analyst i’ve heard predict the Raiders to win the west.

May 16th, 2012 at 11:40 am
I don’t think the two trades are similar, and that’s why people don’t talk about Cutler.
Cutler was 26 (in his prime), and Palmer was 32, retired, and his team moved forward with a new and capable QB.
May 16th, 2012 at 11:40 am

DHB regrets drunk-driving arrest
Speaking to the media for the first time since his drunk-driving arrest, Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey expressed remorse and regretted letting down his fans.
“I just kind of regret bringing bad attention to the team, for the most part. Want to let the fans know that I’m here, working hard, trying to get on the same page with Carson and looking forward to the season.”

I wanted us to draft Woodson too. Imagine of he went to the OSU. Him on Defense and David Boston on offense.

Dutch,
No, remind me please. The only snickers’ commercial I remember is from a SB. The guy gets hit, goes the SL, and now he thinks he is Batman. lol

In 1996, Snickers rolled out is “Not Going Anywhere for a While?” campaign including a spot featuring two bewildered football fans gazing out from their seats at an empty stadium. As the camera panned to the end zone, viewers see “Cleveland Browns” painted in orange and brown on the grass. Browns owner Art Modell, of course, had just relocated the team to Baltimore in one of the bitterest sports controversies in recent history. As it turned out, those Snickers-eating Browns fans would have four years on their hands.

Raiders in a 3-4? Kelly would accept NT
ALAMEDA — Stories of the Raiders switching things up defensively and moving to a 3-4 base have been floating since Dennis Allen was hired as head coach in January.
So when Allen intimated recently that veteran defensive tackle Tommy Kelly could be the nose tackle in such a scheme, such a possibility raised eyebrows. None more than on Kelly himself.
“If he sees (me being) a 3-4 nose, I ain’t trying to get that big,” Kelly said following the Raiders’ OTA practice on Tuesday. “I ain’t trying to gain all that weight. I’ve done went through that, being 340, 350 pounds. That really ain’t my cup of tea. I ain’t trying to gain all that weight.”
Two years ago, Kelly dropped upwards of 35 pounds and the weight loss, along with the 2009 arrival of Richard Seymour, hastened Kelly’s maturation. And while Seymour has been named to the past two Pro Bowls, many observers feel as though Kelly, who is now listed at 6-foot-6, 300 pounds, has actually outplayed his defensive line mate. Kelly has 14 1/2 sacks the past two seasons combined, with an interception and fumble recovery last year.
In fact, both players have the same number of sacks — 15 1/2 — since Seymour arrived in Oakland.
Kelly has played for almost as many head coaches in Oakland since catching on as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State in 2004 in Norv Turner, Art Shell, Lane Kiffin, Tom Cable, Hue Jackson and now, Allen.
It’s a new era with the passing last October of Al Davis and a new general manager in Reggie McKenzie.
“It’s different,” Kelly said. “Al D. was almost hands on with everything. He was very involved with every decision and now it’s a chain of command. Coach Allen, I think will be good for us to have a defensive head coach. He’s going to pay attention to us and he’s going to make sure defense is almost the first priority.
“Our offense is pretty much set. We (are the) side of the ball that probably needs the most work.”
Which brings us full circle to the possibility of Kelly lining up at nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme.
“It ain’t about what I think,” he said, backing off a but from his initial semi-protest. “It’s whatever they pay me to do at the time. I will do it to the best of my ability. I played nose when (Warren) Sapp was here. It ain’t nothing. When you play defensive tackle, ain’t really no difference between the nose and the three-technique. You both getting double-teamed. (Shoot), we’re getting the same blocks so it really don’t matter.”
Still, many players blanch at the idea of moving to nose.
“Because they probably ain’t that physical, mentally,” Kelly said. “You know what I am saying? To play D-tackle, you have to be a little crazy, because you’re going to get hit. It’s different than playing outside where you might get a little air and have some freedom to do something. You don’t got no freedom when you’re inside. You’re always going to get hit. Somebody’s going to hit you from the right side, or from the left side, or down the middle. Every play.
“So you really have to have your mind frame right and tell yourself that you have to put your body on everything moving. As long as you have the mentality, you’ll be all right.”
Now Kelly was rolling. Asked if he was a good crazy or bad crazy, Kelly smiled.
“Good crazy,” he said. “Crazy like a fox.”
Fair enough, so who’s bad crazy?
“Ron Artest,” Kelly said of the Los Angeles Lakers’ Metta World Peace. “I ain’t trying to kill nobody, but I am definitely trying to make my presence felt out there.”
Especially if he has to play a little nose tackle.

So Beetch, how do the Lackers respond from a 30 point drubbing by OKC? Rather if you are going to be that dominated and humiliated, what exactly is the strategy to come back with?
May 16th, 2012 at 12:27 pm
no matter what happens tonight, if the Lakers fall to 0-2 in the series … you can bet on Brown & Bryant calling out somebody
either Blake & Sessions, or Bynum & Gasol.
Heck, maybe all 4 of them!!
Lakers aren’t a team. they like to throw people under the bus & point fingers, which spreads dysfunction & animosity like wildfire

Are there any OTAs today?

I don’t like Kelly’s attitude, saying “I don’t want to play nose … but I’ll do it as long as they are paying me”
sounds like a check casher to me. doesn’t sound like a guy who will lose any sleep if a team runs for 150+ against us.

Yo, the Purple & Gold gots to go with match ups, can’t be successful against their athleticism
Gasol v Ibaka – Gasol works him inside and in the post for 18 and 8
Bynum v Perkins – If Bynum doesn’t discover his dominance we’re finished. Needs 24 and 14
Kobe v Anyone – Kobe doesn’t need 40, but must dominate the 2nd going into halftime and the 4th to close it out
Artest keep Durant under 30 and somehow Sessions and Blake contain Westbrook, although we don’t really have anyone who can stop him
This season the Lake Show has been successful late in games V the Drizzle, so gots to keep it close into the 4th
