Pryor talks about Al Davis, rookie season, future

By Steve Corkran
Friday, May 18th, 2012 at 7:04 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Second-year quarterback Terrelle Pryor arrived late in training camp last season as a result of being selected by the Raiders in the third round of the NFL supplemental draft.
That, combined with his having to serve a five-game suspension for a violation of NCAA rules at Ohio State, set back Pryor’s development.
Well, now he’s on equal footing with his teammates and ready to make strides toward being a starting NFL quarterback. He realizes that he has to wait his turn, given the Raiders have veteran Carson Palmer on the roster, too. However, he is doing everything he can so that he will be ready when called upon.
Here is what Pryor had to say in a lenghty interview after a recent organized team activity in Alameda:

Q: How much further ahead are you with an actual offseason to work with?
Pryor: Big time in terms of footwork, confidence, believing in myself. All of that stuff is miles ahead with more great things to come.

Q: Interview with Sports Illustrated, questioned things?
Pryor: I’m not going to talk about that. That’s in the past.

Q: How difficult was last year?
Pryor: It was just hard not playing. It’d be like you not being able to report or do something that you love. You maybe love to golf and you can’t, you have a sore arm or whatever or your back and you can’t golf anymore. It just gets frustrating.

Q: How different is the offense?
Pryor: This offense is great. I love this offense. Coach Knapp has got some good stuff going for Carson, myself and Matt. It’s a great opportunity to be a part of this, I’ll tell you that much.

Q: Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp believes in you. How much does that help?
Pryor: I’m not saying that he’s supposed to. I work hard and I do the right thing just like Carson does, just like Matt does. That’s how it should be.

Q: Disappointed they signed Matt Leinart?
A: This is the business of football. You have to have a strong core quarterback group because that’s really what leads the team. Defense does win games, yes. You need everybody to be on the same page, but you need a quarterback to know what’s going on and be able to lead the team. I’m not discouraged at all that Matt’s here. Matt’s a great guy and I’m going to go about my business getting better and working hard and no one out-working me. That’s how I live and that’s how I do things every day, and it won’t change.

Q: Did you get 1 percent better
Pryor: Oh yeah. Big big huge improvement. I spent a lot of time with Coach DiFilipio and I cleaned up the footwork, taking my feet in my progression and nothing but good results.

Q: You really competing for No. 2 spot or content to be No.3?
Pryor: Oh, yes, I’m competing to play.

Q: Have to caution to not try to overdo it after missing last year?
Pryor: Naw, I just go within the plays that I get and within the reps that I get. Just like I said, my 1 percent. I live by that code because that’s all I want to do. I want to get myself better. I’m not worried about … I mean sure, I learned a lot from Carson but I’m not going to worry about what he’s doing. I’m not going to worry about what Matt’s doing because I have to be on my A game every day. I’m competing to play in the second spot, competing to play, get in the game a leader on the field, off the field? That’s the questions I ask myself to see if I got an A today or I got one percent better or what?

Q: Each quarterback have a different skill set?
Pryor: I got a big arm, too. A big arm. I just happen to be able to run and that just adds on to my arsenal. If you go throughout the reads and do the right progression and throw the ball to the right spot where you want it to be, and if nothing’s there and I take off, then that’s a plus.

Q: What did you think about rookie wide receiver Juron Criner?
Pryor: He saved Carson, he saved myself, he saved Matt also. He’s a player. He has learned, just like myself and everybody else, he’s going to be a good one. He catches everything that comes near him. I was very impressed with him.

Q: Relief to get back on the field?
Pryor: It’s good to play this game that I love and continuing to get better every day. It’s a blessing. Different circumstances because I’m behind somebody that’s very talented. I wouldn’t want to learn from anybody else than Carson. But I’m in a different position, I’m working hard to get better every day and learn from him and taking mental reps while he’s in there taking snaps. That’s all I can do right now.

Q: What’s it like learning from Palmer?
Pryor: As a person, he’s one of the best people I’ve ever met, the way he handles his work but he also gets into my technique to fix what I did wrong. He’s great. I couldn’t ask for anyone better.

Q: Coaching change, worry you might not have a place?
Pryor: No, because I knew my work ethic would … I know coaches come in and have a different perspective about you or whoever the player is, and I knew my work ethic and how I drop and do the things that they wanted me to do. It carried myself over into what they wanted done. If I wasn’t doing it right in practice or whatever we’re doing in drills, I would be out here working by myself so it is what they want. But that didn’t really come into my mind.

Q: This offseason, where did you improve?
Pryor: Really just footwork and having a chance to learn the offense. I didn’t know anything last year, nothing at all. I knew some of the stuff going into games and stuff like that but starting from Day 1 here right now when the new coaches came in. On the other hand I came in last year at the end of camp and everything was already put in. I couldn’t ask the coach, the offensive coordinator. We didn’t even have a quarterbacks coach so I couldn’t even learn anything from that standpoint. So this is definitely a blessing and this is in God’s hands.

Q: What was that one play you were in for going to be if it hadn’t been negated by the penalty?
PRYOR: Just a quarterback sneak. But I mean, I was doing what I was told. I never heard of a rule — neither did any of our coaches know the rule — of getting under the center too fast and snapping the ball too fast.

Did you know that?
Q: No, I didn’t know that, either. So it’s unfortunate…

Q: Were there going to be more plays for you in that game?
PRYOR: I had a whole package in. But I think that whole package didn’t come in maybe because of that play or the score ended up being 21-7 or 21-0, I can’t remember. That screwed it up, too.

Q: You think you could’ve played more in the following games if that play had gone better?
PRYOR: I don’t know. I was told to take the snap just like I did. So I obeyed my coaches and did exactly what they told me to do. But it’s my fault. We’ll do it like that. I’ll take the responsibility. The score–I’ll take it as the score was 21-7 and I couldn’t get in.

Q: Do you have any indication that they might be adding specialty plays for you this season?
PRYOR: Competing to play. Carson is the starter and he’s going to be the starter. But I don’t put myself as I’m going to be backup. I mean, I don’t sit around saying, ‘I want to be a backup, that’s what I want to be.’ That’s not how I operate. That’s not how I want to be. I’m going to work to play. And Carson’s always played well and always will. Whenever the opportunity comes for me to play, I’ll play. But I’m not planning to be a back-up. Get that correct.

Q: How much does it help to have a veteran like Carson to learn from?
PRYOR: Oh, he’s great. A lot of the stuff I know right now I’ve learned from Carson. It’s just great to have him here.

Q: What kinds of stuff does he say to you?
PRYOR: Just something small, like we were watching film today and I threw a pass, I completed it, but after the play he’s like, ‘Look where your left foot was, your pointer foot, it was turned inside.’ And I was throwing the ball across the field. So little things like that that he does all the time. That’s a big help just to hear it from him. He’s taking all his time to give a word for me to get better.

Q: Dennis Allen has said there’s a lot in you to prove to people you can play quarterback in the NFL. Is that a driving thing for you?
PRYOR: Yeah. I’m just looking for my opportunity, because when I get an opportunity, it’s on from there. Of course, it fuels me that people say I couldn’t be a quarterback or stuff like that. But my plan is in God’s hands, like I said before, and with my work ethic and within myself. And whatever anybody else says it’s irrelevant to me. It really doesn’t matter to me.

Q: Did you ever get a chance to talk to Al Davis?
PRYOR: I talked to him a couple times a week before he passed. He would give me a call. Just a couple times a week–he would just tell me he believed in me and stuff like that. Nothing very… I’m not sure exactly what was going on with him… We would get on the phone and we would chat.

Q: Do you view this almost as a true rookie year for you because of the limitations of last year?
PRYOR: What I can say about last year is I learned the speed of the corners, I learned what the NFL is, in terms of, you have to get back and get rid of the ball. The rush is between the D-linemen getting to you, nothing else. So I learned the speed of the D-linemen, you’ve got to get the ball out fast because of them. You’ve got to throw at different angles. From that standpoint, no, I’d say this is my second year. Because I learned an awful lot by taking snaps against the first team in… the practice-role doing the scout team. I learned a lot in terms of physical stuff like that. So I learned a good bit. I’d say this is my second year because I did learn a lot.

Q: Have you convinced some of the WRs to stay out here for you to throw to?
PRYOR: Oh yeah. We’ve got a bunch of hard-working guys. We also have guys that want to get better. No one’s good enough not to get enough work.

Q: Allen has said how hard a worker you are. You think you surprise coaches sometimes by working that hard?
PRYOR: I like to work hard, you know? Because when it’s my time to play, I want to be more than ready. I want guys to be like, ‘Wow.’ That’s it.

Q: When’s that going to be?
PRYOR: Whenever the time comes.

Q: When you have those conversations with Al Davis, does that motivate you?
PRYOR: Yeah, that drives me. Because the last pick–the last pick may not mean anything. I might not mean nothing to anybody. But to me, you know, it kind of felt like–last pick of a guy that made a legacy of football. He was just a well-known guy. Being the last pick… I mean, that’s special, just in that sense, just how his name is always brought up. He’s on HBO shows now after his death. It’s just an honor, how much I have to, I want to.

Q: What’s it like to finally have a QBs coach, like DeFilippo, unlike last year?
PRYOR: Oh, it’s great. You learn. He’s all about technique and stuff. He works with me, I’m always around him, I’m always texting him, getting input, so it’s great. To have somebody to lean on when I need to know something, (instead of)
just having an offensive coordinator. I mean, I never heard of that before. I didn’t know what I was getting into coming in here. It’s definitely great that Mr. McKenzie got a quarterback coach because I’m learning a lot.

Q: Was it DeFilippo who noticed the technique work you needed?
PRYOR: A lot of my throws, it was all in my feet, in my hips and how I carried my feet. Since I picked up that stuff up, my balls are becoming very accurate. It’s helping.

Q: You’re already noticing a difference?
PRYOR: Oh, yes, huge. Huge difference. I sit back in the film room and I watch Carson and then Carson helps me. So it’s great. I’ve got a great opportunity and it’s a great time. Because I’m learning a great bit.

Notice that Pryor didn’t give anything specific that Al helped him with. Sounds like Al’s steel trap mind was going, big-time.

This kid is really growing on me a lot. I have a lot of respect for people who are willing to put in the work and this kid sounds like a worker.

Wouldn’t mind him becoming our Aaron Rodgers…sitting behind a good NFL QB for a couple of years and then getting the shot to play.

TP is the antithesis of BRL and McCheese.

  8. ArtilleryShell Says:

I’m feeling Pryor, too. The work ethic is good for the team to see, no matter what position they play. I think the kid wants it and will be good one day. Unlike Jamarcus, who had the arm talent but nothing else.
Now rolando McClain, what’s up? Why were you there with this stuff going down? Because he hung around and didn’t leave, and on the video someone said hide the gun, he should be suspended, lose pay, then get cut. The problem is, we just don’t have another LB with his size and we don’t have many LBs period.
Solution: Aaron Curry MLB/ILB, Rookie Burris OLB, or sign Lofa Tatupu. Our LBs are weak.

When Pryor eventually earns a starting role, or if he gets playing time due to injury or special packages, i believe he will ‘wow’ and force coaches to play him more.

TP is the antithesis of BRL
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

That’s for sure. He has about 1/60th of JR’s talent. I wish him luck, but the odds are against him.

  14. GG Says:

On pure potential, our offense could be all-time…

    QB: Pryor
    RB: McFadden
    TE: Ausberry
    WR: Moore, Criner, Ford, DHB
    FB: Reece

That’s a massive amount of speed, skill, and multiple ability for defenses to attempt to handle.

Pryor can run/throw/catch, McFadden can run/throw/catch, Ausberry can be fast at TE, Moore and Ford are extremely acrobatic in the air and deadly fast, Ford is also potentially the most explosive returner in the game, Criner can catch everything over the middle, DHB has great YAC ability. And of course Reece is quite amazing, can block, be a short yardage runner, and can be motioned out too and expose DBs and LBs. And all of the above can be used for a variety of end-arounds and trick-plays, wild card looks with Pryor or McFadden at ‘QB’ etc.

I think this ‘Knapp’ offense is also perfect theoretically to make the most of all these players mentioned. I bet there’ll be a bunch of trick-plays and packages that get used often too.

  15. Thec Says:

That’s for sure. He has about 1/60th of JR’s talent. I wish him luck, but the odds are against him.

    +++++++++++

BRL all the talent and zero work ethic, overweight, dope addict…He proves you can not do it on talent alone.

So far TP is beating the odds.

  20. Bob Marley Says:

Kept reading yesterday about how Rolando’s actions don’t mesh with what the new Regime is all about…. therefore he should be cut ASAP, nevermind waiting for the result of his trial.

Well, if Reggie holds such a high standard why did he make former Packers DB Brandon Underwood (a player who has already been the subject of a 2 game suspension as a repeat offender of the NFL’s personal conduct policy) one of his first signings?.

Underwood’s issues go way back to Ohio State, where they revoked his scholarship due to missed meetings and academic issues, I mean, come on, how lazy you need to be get your athletic scholarship taken away because of it?.

The stuff Underwwod was suspended for as a Pro was:

“Underwood was the center of attention in an alleged sexual assault case involving two women at a Wisconsin Dells hotel last year. Though nothing came of the women’s claims about the sex being forced on them, Underwood did enter a no-contest plea to one count of prostitution non-marital sexual intercourse last March. He was fined $379.00 by a Sauk County judge.

When apprised that the investigation centered on Underwood, 23, several players who wished to remain anonymous said he had been a problem since he was drafted in the sixth round in 2009 out of Cincinnati.”

    And the second offense was:

“Green Bay Packers cornerback Brandon Underwood is once again in trouble with Lady Justice.

WLUK Fox 11 News in Northeast Wisconsin cracked the story yesterday of Underwood’s alleged altercation with his wife, Brandie, on June 16th, the night he and his teammates received their Super Bowl XLV Championship Rings.

According to Mrs. Underwood’s story, the two were having an argument that evening on their way home from the ring ceremony. Brandon Underwood allegedly became incensed over her wearing the Super Bowl necklace given to her by the Packers organization, then ripped it off her neck while still in their car.

Underwood was then said to have gotten out of the car, walked around to the passenger side door, and dragged Brandie from the vehicle before driving away. She immediately phoned the police, and Underwood was arrested upon his return. The couple is reportedly going through a divorce.”

So, where’s that holy standard you guys are holding 55 to?.

  21. KoolKell Says:

    Wow. Very impressed. lookout Leinart.

Last time I checked, McClain loved the game enough to work hard, put in the long hours of film study and play injured and is not a divisive locker room presence at all.

My point is, several people advocating for McClain to be cut yesterday because “he’s not what Reggie and the organization are all about now, get rid of him make an example out of him” are going overboard.

So Reggie already signed Underwood and gave him a chance to get back in the Legaue, if McClain stays, is Reggie full of crap?.
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I am not sure about Underwood. Maybe Reggie thinks he can handle Underwood, or at least sign him till he goes to jail. BTW, is Underwood a good player ?

My stance on McStupid is very well known; in truth, if McS was an elite MLB already, I really wouldn’t care what he did. However, Mr. Rolando can’t even play, so why would I want him around?

  56. DJ Johnny Says:

    Hardline,

Each time i’ve heard DA talk about wanting “good character” guys i’ve harkened back to the Underwood signing.

I’d have to review what DA and Reggie have actually said in regard to that.

Have they said they will only bring on good character guys or have they said they prefer that? There’s a big difference.

You can google Brandon Underwood and see the accusations against him and the plea bargains he’s made over the past few yrs. It sure doesn’t smack of “high character”.

Is DA saying Raiders would only DRAFT high character guys but not necessariy excluding the bringing on of questionable guys in free agency?

Or are they just saying their preferences and at the end of the day they’ll bring on whomever they think will help them win…regardless of their character…as long as they don’t murder anybody?

  57. Hardline Says:

    DJ,

Am not sure what Mark and Reggie said. It seems like Underwood never threatened anyone with a gun ….. as of yet….

I really don’t care about “high” character, so long as the guy is a 1st class baller. Remember the Raiders of old; they could be called low character guys but stopped short at going to jail.

Plus they were world class performers.

  58. GG Says:

I think Underwood came along when the Raiders off-season first kicked off. One of their first signings. Before all the other CB, LB, OL, etc signings. Imo, Reggie brought him over IN CASE they couldn’t sign any CBs. But seeing as they did manage to sign a bunch of good ones, then Underwood becomes expendable.

  59. JB Says:

At least Pryor seems to have an excellent work ethic and attitude. How un-Jamarcus like! He may trun out to be our next franchise QB after Palmer’s next 3-4 years. I fully expect Palmer & Pryor to thrive in this new regime. IMO, Palmer will be recognized at the top of the available elite QB’s next year. Write it down.

  60. DJ Johnny Says:

I think it’s a fair question to ask what Reggie and DA’s definition of “character” guys is?

I don’t want a team of choir boys either.

I guess proof will be in the pudding when we see how this McClain thing is handled.

  61. WenzhouRaider Says:

Underwood signing does undercut Reggie’s message about wanting high character guys.

Anyway I still support the move to CUT rolando. The writing is on the wall, this guy has character issues, will have trouble staying on the field, and most importantly…is simply an average LB. Not worth the trouble. Tatupu was signed in atl to replace Lofton who we DEFINITELY should have signed. I’d take an average vet for a year or two ala Danny Clark

  63. Hardline Says:

    DJ,

I checked Underwood’s NFL stats, and 187th overall pick a few years ago, has 5 solo tackles, no forced fumbles or INT’s.

Why didn’t Reggie just bring back Boyd, lol ??

Underwood, I am sure will be cut soon.

  64. Bob Marley Says:

    Hardline.

Mr. Rolando can’t even play, so why would I want him around?.
    —————————————————–

Seems like many guys agree with you man, but…

Reggie and Dennis Allen want him around, at least up to this point, the financial case for his release is strong, he could have been dumped months ago, yet he remains a Raider.

I’m sure Reggie scouted McClain when he was in GB and DA saw him play twice last year, not to mention that they have probably watched every snap he’s played as a pro.

Maybe those guys think once they get their hands on this kid they can turn him into a stud.

Dennis Allen: “Rolando McClain is one of those guys we’ve got to develop. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to get to work with those guys. We do have talent. We’ve got to bring them along.”

  65. Sullivan44 Says:

Why is Pryor being compared to JaMarcus Russell? Do they have something in common, other than race?

  66. DJ Johnny Says:

I will say that it will be tuff for Reggie and DA to be seen as genuine in regard to only high character guys IF they keep McClain…regardless of whether he goes to jail or not.

Me? I want the best players out there.

Im really really really rooting for this kid. Every time he speaks I become more of a fan.

Dont get me wrong, Im a huge CP3 guy. Love him to death. But TP always says the right thing and more importantly, his actions are backing it up.

Since getting booted from OSU, this whole process has been huge for him. It’s been painful but it was necessary and it will make him 10x the player he ever would have been. It’s enstilling a level of work ethic and drive that will never go away a la DHB. Its very Jerry Rice-esque.

Dumbass RoMac could learn a lot from the way TP has handled his adversity. Two players that have gone completely different directions with regards to the way theyve handled things and we will see the way their careers play out. TP is headed for greatness. RoMac is headed somewhere else that is clear.

Keep it up TP. Were all rooting for you!

  91. Raider Riff Says:

For those of you that hate RoMac so much, here is why DA and the Gut want to make it work with him:

    - His football IQ is thru the roof

    - He’s tough as nails and will play hurt. RoMac will never get the credit he deserves for how hurt he played last year.

    - They know he can be a completely different player if he’s surrounded by smarter linebackers than what weve had and a real defensive coordinator dictating a real scheme.

  92. DJ Johnny Says:

TP will get a chance and it may not be a large window.

I don’t know when it will happen, but there will be an time when the spotight will be on him and he’ll have a legit chance to show what he can do in a real game situation.

Problem for him is, if he doesn’t do well, it may be his only chance.

Too many people doubt that he can be a legit QB and they’ll say ’see, i told you so’ if he does bad.

If he does well, the other side will say the same.

I’d like nothing more than for him to be a great QB.

Of course we WILL see him in pre-season against “scrubs”.

    Can’t wait.

This was a TP article, but just to touch on the Romac issue…there is no reason to come to any drastic decisions right now. Get ready for the season as if he is not even on the roster and let his legal issues play themselves out behind the scenes. Once it’s all set and done and he is ready to return, then you make the decision. You can’t be impulsive when you have a business to run, gotta do whats best for the team. IMO you give him a second chance, we will be better for it, he is a good player. Just tell McClain to stay the hell out of Bama.

  96. Bob Marley Says:

The more I look into RGIII and Terrelle Pryor, the less distance I see between them, with RG obviously ahead so far, that’s not up for debate.

Looking at their College videos, they were both throwing mostly on the run to wide open receivers.

But the media decided that RG (an exemplary kid) was the next superstar and TP (a kid who messed up) the next villain and that’s how they treated them.

Now I could care less about the media, but NFL people are also in love with RG and have few good things to say about TP, that’s more troubling.

But NFL decision makers have their butt in the line, drafting a kid like TP can get them fired if it doesn’t work out, so nobody wanted to touch him.

The consensus was the the kid was trouble and would have a hard time playing QB in the Legaue, that the best case scenario would be for him to go to a team with an established QB and learn for a couple of years, a project and a longshot.

Well here he is, exactly in that situation and with one of the best QB coaches in the League as his Offensive Coordinator, De Filippo is certainly helping too.

Now people often talked about his attitude but again, here he is busting his butt off, behaving and eager to learn, looks like a lot of people misread the kid’s character.

On the field they’re quite different, RG is more like Vick with the blazing speed and the strong arm, while TP, even with a faster 40 time, doesn’t look nearly as fast and his throws seem to lack the velocity that RG puts into some of his.

So while RG does look like a right-handed Vick, TP’s game is harder to predict, to be honest, the player TP reminds me of is a faster Vince Young, now that may seem like an unflattering comparison but if VY worked as hard as TP is currently doing, his career would have not been derailed.

Bottom line, TP is already beating the odds, he remains a QB for us and the attitude is gone, replaced by a strong work ethic and the desire to prove people wrong, so we’ve already cleared the first hurdle.

Mayock said the kid is a playmaker, he’ll never be Aaron Rodgers as a passer, but as long as he can make plays and get the ball to his weapons, he’ll have a chance.

  97. Raider O Says:

    Fakers got lucky yesterday.

  98. Bob Marley Says:

By the way, RGIII actually played football last year, he was able to polish his game and develop his tools, as opposed to TP sitting on our bench and doing next to nothing in terms of developing his on-field skills.

If TP had played last year with the dedication he’s now showing, he might have changed a lot of people’s minds and…wait, we would not have had a shot at him, nevermind.

  99. Raider O Says:

The more I look into RGIII and Terrelle Pryor, the less distance I see between them, with RG obviously ahead so far, that’s not up for debate.
    $$$$$$$$$$$$

I don’t know a lot about RG3, but why is he “obviously ahead so far”?
He is a Rookie, and TP has one year of exp in the NFL.

  100. Raider Riff Says:

    Bob Marley,

The reason why RGIII and TP have been pushed differently by the media is because RGIII’s mechanics were way better coming out of college. That is an obvious reason.

The other, more relevant reason, is that the QB position is a position that values “judgement” above anything else. You must have good personal judgement to succeed at the position. Good judgement off the field translates to good judgement on it 9 times out of 10.

Vick has poor judgement. Vince Young has poor judgement. Ryan Leaf has poor judgement.

And the problem with poor judgement is that it is a character flaw. It is not something you can fix or grow out of. You are either smart or youre not.

TP’s mistakes caused people to question his judgement and for good cause. Time will tell though whether it was just a case of “poor judgement” or a simple mistake. Even people with good judgement make “mistakes”. Peyton Manning has made many “mistakes” over his career that led to plenty of INT’s. But in general, the guy is smart.

TP has shown so far that his transgressions at OSU were just a “mistake”. As long as he keeps up the good work and stays his course, we got nothing to worry about an the media will change their tune just like they did with Ray Lewis.

  101. Raider O Says:

TP had NFL talent and coaches around him last year, which can help his development more than being surrounded/ playing at the college level IMHO.

  102. Raider Riff Says:

    #92 DJ Johnny,

Ive seen you make that exact post before. And I completely agree with it.

I fear the leash with TP will be too short. Even some of his biggest supporters on this blog will be too quick to dismiss the kid if he isnt lights out right out of the box.

  103. Raider O Says:

    NEVER.
    TP is the Future!

  104. Raider Riff Says:

C’mon Raider O. Youve seen some of the debates Ive had here regarding TP. Youve seen some of the subsequent opinions from the other members.

They want him to qualify for the 2nd spot this year or they think he’s garbage and not worth the investment.

Ive read plenty here to tell me that even his biggest supporters, sans u of course, dont understand the time it takes to develop a quality QB. They think he is far more developed than he is and that will lead to inflated expectations. They will be impatient and want to move on to the “next guy” the moment he isnt what they expect him to be at this stage of his career.

    —————————————————–

For the reason Riff just pointed out, RGIII throws a better ball already, you can see the quick release and the velocity on his throws, now I haven’t seen him make throws into tight windows, but he definitely has the arm to pull it off.

RGIII will make some “wow” throws, TP won’t, but as long as he can be an efficient passer, he’ll be ok.

  106. Raider Riff Says:

To add to my RGIII rant in comparing him to TP…

RGIII reputation for his character, smarts, and judgement is impeccable. That was the biggest factor in why he was drafted so high.

  107. Raider O Says:

    Riff,

I have to disagree with you bro. Fans have high hopes for their favorite players, but most fans (that have common sense) understand that we have Palmer, we have a great young and talented QB to develop, so we are in a great situation. Who cares if he 2nd or 3rd this year, Palmer is the starter, and as long as he is healthy, no one will care about the backup position (during the season).

  108. Bob Marley Says:

I think it was Vegas (Just Win Baby) who made a good point a few days ago, RGIII appear to have the same issue as Vick, he’s going to take a ton of hits, when he takes off he’s going full speed and the pounding they take is much harder on the body.

TP seems to understand better that he needs to protect his body, he takes shots but not nearly as hard as RGIII who seems like the kind of guy who will always miss games with craked ribs and stuff.

When it comes to running TP is more like Cam Newton and RGIII like Vick, I’d rather go with TP-Cam’s style.

  109. Raider O Says:

    Bob & Riff,

So RG3 has a stronger arm, quicker release, more accurate, big play ability, he reads defenses better, and he has better judgment than TP?

  110. Bob Marley Says:

    O.

Some guys here just hate Leinart and think that if TP can’t beat him out, he’s garbage.

I’m hoping TP doesn’t see a single snap this year, if CP misses time, let Leinart play and TP get 2nd team reps, it will get him much closer to being ready without throwing him into the fire, patience people.

  111. Raider O Says:

Vegas is Just Fire Baby. Just Win Baby is a different poster.

  112. Marks hair Says:

    108. TP has a monster stiff arm too..

  113. Bob Marley Says:

    Bob & Riff,

So RG3 has a stronger arm, quicker release, more accurate, big play ability, he reads defenses better, and he has better judgment than TP?.

    —————————————————–

At this point yes, nobody said TP was actually better than RGIII right now.

    In time, we shall see.

  114. Raider O Says:

    Bob,

Btw, I still think TP will be our backup. The kid is a hard worker, extremely talented, and he is a winner. I’m also not a fan of Leinart, but I want TP to earn the position.

  115. Bob Marley Says:

    Raider O Says:

Vegas is Just Fire Baby. Just Win Baby is a different poster.

    —————————————————-

Ok, you know who I meant, why didn’t he stick with Vegas anyway? it was easier.

  116. Raider O Says:

What about comparing TP to Cam?

  117. Marks hair Says:

    109. Yes. But tp can improve. And this is the nfl. We’ll find out how good rg3 is after he gets hit 50 or 60 times..

  118. Raider Riff Says:

Raider O, would that be a stretch to assume about RGIII?

I think he had a better football education. OSU/Tressell stunted TP’s development.

He’s making up for lost time in quick fashion from the looks of things.

And so far, RGIII has shown better judgement in his career. But as I said, time will tell. TP’s OSU stunt may have just been simple “mistake” by an otherwise smart person. Since joining the Raiders TP has shown nothing to think otherwise. But I need to see more than just one year of good decision making on TP’s part, wouldnt you?

IMO, TP is in a position to have a much better career and develop faster than RGIII and surpass the deficit that he may have at the moment. Washington is impulsive and ownership is unstable. Whereas the Gut is measured and slow with his process and will give DA a long leash. Our coaching staff appears to be way better than Shanahans and there is no evidence to show that Shanahan can develop a QB. So far, he’s only won with Dan Reeves’ boy. TP is in a position to learn from two quality guys and come in when he is more than ready.

  119. Bob Marley Says:

    Marks hair Says:

TP has a monster stiff arm too..

    ———————————————–

Yeah, and at 6′6 240 or so, you can’t just try to put a big hit on him and expect him to go down, you have to use technique and wrap him up, which lessens the blow.

  120. Marks hair Says:

The thunder got lucky on wednesday

  121. Raider O Says:

He moved from Vegas, so he changed his username.
I don’t like it, and that’s why I continue to call him Vegas.

  122. Marks hair Says:

Im glad hes working on his feet cause they were a hot mess. He could be way more acurate. Better spirals.. He’ll be a fun preseason story

  123. Raider Riff Says:

    116. Cam is way ahead of TP right now.

Cam’s mechanics are flawless. His college experience was weak, but then Ive heard very sound argument to suggest that with the way he was used, the offense he ran, and the way theyve adapted the Panthers to suit Cam’s football education, that Carolina is actually more progressive than the rest of the league and may be the future in which all NFL offenses operate.

Im a big fan of the way Ron Rivera has gone about business. It took major balls to go that route and he’s pulled it off flawlessly.

But expect that offense to get more complicated as Cam grows into the position.

  124. Bob Marley Says:

    O.

Cam Newton is the best of both worlds, if you mixed RGIII and TP you’d get Newton.

  125. Raider O Says:

    Riff,

As I said before, I don’t agree that The OSU and Preppie stunned his growth. Preppie and the school’s job is to win games, and they did that. There are other players on the team, and most of them will never play another down.
To answer your question, I find it hard to believe that a kid who played at Baylor (competion level) is more NFL ready than a kid who played at The OSU. I never watched RG3, so I can’t say more about the topic.

  126. DarthPirate Says:

Haven’t commented since the end of last season here, but what do you guys think of Max Starks? Is he worth taking a look at? Coming off an injury, and hasn’t gotten any offers from anybody per PFT, but he would add some quality depth.

  127. Raider O Says:

I thought the issue with Cam was his lack of experience (JC) and mechanics.

  128. Raider Riff Says:

    It was lack of experience.

  129. Bob Marley Says:

    Riff.

“Our coaching staff appears to be way better than Shanahans and there is no evidence to show that Shanahan can develop a QB. So far, he’s only won with Dan Reeves’ boy.”
    —————————————————–

    I’m not sure I agree.

For instance, I’ve watched the Redskins play a few times last year, the play-calling on offense was exceptional, there were so many plays that led to wide open receivers all over the field only to have Beck or Grossman come up with horrible decisions/throws.

I remmeber thinking that if Shanny could get his hands on a good QB, they’d be really good, we’ll see if RGIII is that guy.

As far as developing a QB, Cutler was playing great football under Shanny, I think he did an excellent job with him.

  130. Raider O Says:

I don’t think Max Starks fits the ZBS. Thecsteelwrs didn’t sign last year till after their Starting OT got injured.

  131. Raider Riff Says:

How can you say that OSU didnt stunt his growth? I think you are letting your allegiance to that program cloud your judgement. Im not a college football guy to I have no bias.

But as you said yourself, they did what they could to win football games, and that was at the expense of his development.

Winning games and developing a QB do not go hand and hand, especially early on. Peyton Manning won how many games the first season? They sacrificed that year to get him ready. It was all about him.

OSU and its boosters never would have given Tressell that sort of leash. Way to much pressure to win each and every year.

  132. Bob Marley Says:

    Darth.

I don’t think Starks has played in the ZBS, may not be a fit.

  133. Raider Riff Says:

    129. Bob Marley

Good points. Im not questioning Shanahan’s play calling abilities. His playcalling is good. And that can be a lot to a developing QB. Hell, it means everything to a guy like Tom Brady even today.

But that doesnt mean he can develop a QB. Cutler benefited from the playcalling. And Cutler came into the league pretty good. Did he really get better under Shanahan or as a result of Shanahan’s coaching/development skills? Im not sure.

But solid rebuttle on your part non-the-less.

  134. Raider Riff Says:

I meant his playcalling could be a lot to making a QB look good, not necessarily developing him. But make him look good and keep his confidence up.

  135. Raider O Says:

    Riff,

Urban M said it best when he was talking about Tebow. His job at Florida was to win games and not develop talent for the NFL. There are other players on the team that will never play football again, and it will be unfair to them to try to develop talented players with NFL potential over winning. Like you said, sometimes winning games and developing QBs don’t go hand in hand, but the HC and the school have an obligation to all the players.

  136. Bob Marley Says:

I’m sure you guys are familiar with Ken Herock by now, he talked about TO prior to his drafting:

“After meeting with Terrelle Pryor for two days this week, former NFL personnel director Ken Herock — the father of Packers scout Shaun Herock — came away impressed the former Ohio State quarterback’s openness and knowledge of the game.

It may not be enough to earn Terrelle Pryor the first-round status predicted by agent Drew Rosenhaus, but after working with Pryor for two days in preparation for interview sessions preceding the supplemental draft, former NFL personnel director Ken Herock gave the erstwhile Ohio State quarterback his seal of approval.

“I was impressed, I really was,” said Herock, who after his retirement from the NFL as a longtime personnel expert founded ProPrep, a service that advises players on what to expect in interviews by scouts.

“He’s a sharp guy. He was impressive in terms of football knowledge, putting things up on the blackboard, and he was very straightforward about things. He didn’t hold anything back.”

Herock said Pryor was “really knowledgeable” about football concepts — things as simple as naming the teams in the NFL’s eight divisions (Herock: “You’d be surprised how many guys struggle with that.”) to more complex subjects — and about nonfootball issues, as well.

“He’s attentive and open,” Herock said. “A good listener, but not afraid, either, to offer his read on things.”

Despite his long career in evaluating players physically, Herock generally does not participate in on-field workouts. He did, though, observe Pryor’s session on Thursday with a group of Rosenhaus clients who are skill-position players.

And he was very impressed, Herock said, with the throwing session supervised by former Cincinnati quarterback Ken Anderson.

“From what I saw,” Herock said, “(Pryor) has a nice, tight release and delivery. The ball comes off his hand well, and he was accurate. I’m not into (assessing) where a guy will be picked anymore, and the supplemental (draft) is a little different thing, for sure. But I think, if people have a chance to work him out, they’ll be surprised.”

That said, why would you not think that OSU stunted TPs growth?

Your points are spot on and they are making my argument for me. Urban Meyer is just as guilty with Tebow. Tebow was a phenominal high school QB that went nowhere developmentally once hit hit Florida.

With that guys leadership skills it is absolutely criminal what UMeyer did.

Like I said, I think we are in agreeance, you just dont want to believe that OSU did anything wrong. But nothing youve said in your last few posts suggests anything to the notion that OSU did a good job developing TPs skills.

I hope we agree that colleges and HC care about winning and the entire team more than developing QBs for the NFL. It’s a FACT!
Didnt you say you played college ball? Did you want the HC to develop your QB so he can enjoy a career in the NFL, or did you want to win games?
The OSU and Preppie did the right thing. They won games!
I can’t talk about his development because I didn’t know him before he started playing for The OSU, but I did see progress while he was playing for The OSU.

  141. Bob Marley Says:

This is going to be a long post, but it’s the most complete scouting report I could find on Terrelle Pryor and it comes not from some magazine “expert” but from a guy who had a very good career scouting in the NFL, to me it lends more credibility than your average draft “guru”:

Greg Gabriel, from The National Football Post:

(Greg Gabriel is a veteran of 29 NFL seasons.

Gabriel was with the Giants for 16 seasons and worked with some all time great NFL coaches and personnel people including George Young, Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick, Dan Reeves, Tom Coughlin and Ernie Accorsi.

While in New York, the Giants won three NFC Championships and two Super Bowls (XXI and XXI).

Also, 12 first round draft picks came from Gabriel’s main areas of responsibility.

In June of 2001, Gabriel left New York to become Director of College Scouting for the Chicago Bears.

During his nine seasons with Chicago, the Bears went on to win three Division Championships, one NFC Championship and were an NFC wildcard team twice.

Six of the Bears draft picks went on to the Pro Bowl under Gabriel’s direction).

“I watched five games of Pryor from 2010 (Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Miami and Arkansas) and have seen many of his games his first two years in college.

Two things stand out: he has improved each year and he is an outstanding athlete.

As a freshman he was an athlete who played quarterback and had poor throwing skills. In his three years playing he has become more of a passer than a thrower but he is still a long ways away from being an accomplished passer.

We don’t have verified measurables on Pryor but he is about the same size as Cam Newton (6-5 and 245 pounds) and may be a little better athlete.

He has speed, quick feet and outstanding body control to go along with very good strength. He has outstanding arm strength and can throw a tight, catchable ball.

Unlike many of the “spread” formation quarterbacks, Pryor has played a number of plays from under center. It could be as much as 30–40 percent of the Ohio State offense, so playing from under center will not be a skill that he will have to learn when he makes the jump to the NFL.

When taking snaps from under center, Pryor shows he can set up quickly, though he needs improvement with his footwork and staying in balance.

On many of the OSU passing plays, Pryor has just a half-field read, but you do see him read the whole field at times. There are many times that when a play breaks down he will step up and look to the opposite side of the field and try to find an open receiver and at times he is able to find one.

While he does have fairly good instincts, Pryor does not consistently process things quickly on the field.

Instead of being patient and waiting for the play to develop he will often take off and run when under pressure.

Because of his speed and athleticism he can be very dangerous and make big plays when he decides to run. He has a running back mentality with the ball in his hand and can be a powerful runner.

In the passing game, Pryor is much more comfortable throwing to his left than he is to his right. There are some games when a good majority of his throws are to the left and some of his worst throws go to the right.

He has a strong arm and from a statistical point of view good accuracy, but his ball placement is average. There are many throws where the receiver has to make a big adjustment or just wait for the ball. While he can get away with that in college, he won’t in the NFL.

He only has average vision and is not consistently quick to find open secondary receivers, which is why he lacks patience. He flashes throwing with touch, but he can be very inconsistent when throwing on the run.

The one thing that is noticeable is that he throws a good deep ball, but he will also force some deep throws and throw into double or triple coverage. He has to learn that while he has arm strength and deep accuracy, his thought process has to be more conservative and not force throws.

One of the primary traits a quarterback has to have to be successful in the NFL is leadership. He has to lead both verbally and by example and be respected by both his teammates and coaches.

This is a trait that has been in question his whole career at Ohio State. After Pryor’s first year at OSU, I was at an All-Star game interviewing players for that draft.

One of the players I talked to was an Ohio State player. As part of the interview I would ask him about players he played against in the Big Ten and some of his draft-eligible teammates.

I seldom ask about underclassmen but because Pryor was such a big name I decided to ask his opinion of the freshman.

The answer was shocking. He told me he disliked Pryor very much and if anyone said they like him they would be lying!.

He said that Pryor came in with an attitude, felt he was better than every one else and did not really have to compete to get the QB job because it was owed to him.

He said Pryor was cocky, arrogant, and not very friendly and showed little or no respect for older teammates — guys who had already paid the price.

He questioned Pryor’s work habits both on and off the field and his overall ability to lead, saying he was too selfish to be a leader.

Granted, this was during Pryor’s freshman year and hopefully he has matured, but from all accounts recently by “unnamed” teammates, things have not changed that much. It seems that Terrelle Pryor is all about Terrelle Pryor.

Overall, as a talent, Pryor could be in the same class as Cam Newton.

He has some rare traits and is very competitive on the field. He is a playmaker and has more natural talent than many of the quarterbacks drafted in the first round this year.

It also seems as if he has many of the same “issues” as Newton, but still talent wins out and some team will draft him very high.

Whether or not he becomes a good NFL player remains to be seen. With his current attitude, I wouldn’t bet on it but he is young and hopefully he will grow.”

    * Keep in mind that the article was written a few days before TP left Ohio State and nobody knew for sure if he would come back for his senior year or try the supplemental Draft, in fact there wasn’t a supplemental Draft projected at the time.

The OSU did the right thing. They helped develop TP, but not on expense of other players. They won Games.

  143. Bob Marley Says:

It’s not exactly a favorable report, it highlights TP’s issues as a passer that we’ve all heard (and shared by many young, athletic QB’s) as well as his inmaturity at the time, but the guy clearly sees the talent in TP and, as opposed to what some people say, he claims TP got better every year.

Now that the attitude issues seem behind him, he can focus on developing his talent.

    I told you people!

  145. Raider O Says:

    Excellent post Bob. Thank you.

  146. Bob Marley Says:

I’m willing to say that if TP had showed earlier the kind of work ethic and maturity he’s displaying now, many teams would have spent an early pick on the kid, late 1st or 2nd probably.

I mean, Jake Locker and Ryan Tannehill were top 10 picks the last 2 years, a focused TP would have been worth the gamble.

  147. Bob Marley Says:

Don’t mention it O, I’ve been meaning to post that piece for a while, kept forgetting about it.

  148. Raider Riff Says:

Ive said plenty of times Raider O that I think OSU did what they had too under the circumstances. So yes, we both agree, that is what coaches do. It doesnt matter if they should or not, its what they do, that isnt under debate.

It doesnt matter whether I personally think its right or wrong that coaches in college care only about winning in the here and now. What matters is that is a fact. And that it can come at the expense of a players development. As was the case with TP.

    Bob Marley,

Great find on those two scouting reports. But you gotta wonder what everyone else’s reports say? The number of people who say he is VERY raw way out number the number that say he got a good football education and was ready to be drafted.

And the evidence shows that. For everything great that Herock said, they didnt draft him. Nobody did except a guy that only cares about the measurables. A guy named Al Davis. A guy who also drafted J Russel because he was again, blinded by the measurables. A guy that has a track record that goes back even to his glory years at drafting QB’s poorly because he’s never understood the intangibles. A guy that tried to force feed us another guy instead of Plunkett. A guy who got rid of Stabler in favor of some other guy with great measurables. A guy who wasnt the biggest fan of Gannon.

TP and this coaching staff are going to end up making Al look good on this one. But it will because of TP’s doing. Not because he was worth the pick (at the time) or because Al guessed right. TP’s work ethic is going to make up for a lot of mistakes done in the past.

  149. r8eray Says:

    Nice post, Steve!

    Thanks!

  150. Raider O Says:

Is it fair to the rest of the team to care more about developing TP than winning games? What are you going to tell the SRs and JRs? I know this is your last year, he is the best QB on the team, but he is going to RS so we can develop him even if yhat means we miss the bowl game and finish as losers.

  151. Raider Riff Says:

Hell, even NFL coaches do it. None of them have contracts long enough for them to properly develop a QB. That is why so many good QB’s fail in this league. NFL coaches get 4 year deals. 2 years to show progress. And a 3rd to make an impact. And generally, they wouldnt have been hired in the first place had the situation been good with the team so it usually means starting over with a new young QB. 3 years isnt enough time.

Pete Carrol with USC did it the right way with Carson and his subsequent understudies. They bit the bullet early on and then turned into a powerhouse and kept chrning out NFL QBs because everyone sat and learned before they played.

Kiffin has done the same thing with Barkley. They had to start over, but its going to pay off big this year.

But like I said, football is different for OSU. Tressel wasnt given that sort of leash. The people at Michigan, OSU, ND, and a few other spots are just too unrealistic. They want everything to quickly and have too high of expectations.

  152. Raider Riff Says:

    O, youre missing the point.

If you want to argue whether its right or wrong to sacrifice a team for the development of your QB for the long term, then I will gladly debate that with you. But lets get past our initial arguement.

Which was, that OSU did indeed sacrifice TP’s growth for short term gains. If we can both agree on that, which it seems we do now, then we can move on to the new argument. But it was you initially who said that you didnt think OSU stunted his growth and now you are giving me all the evidence I need to say that they indeed did stunt his growth.

Lets get past that argument ok? Then we can debate what Tressell and Meyer did and whether it was a wise choice or not. Ok?

  153. Bob Marley Says:

    Riff.

I think the reason every other GM was scared to death of TP was that he’s the kind pick that can get you fired, Al Davis didn’t have that problem.

  154. Raider O Says:

    Unrealustic?
The OSU and ND are in the top 3 for producing NFL talent.

  155. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

“If I had to prefer a team, I’d probably want to end where I started, but other than that, that’s not possible, but at the same time, anything can happen. That being said, there’s really only one team left in the Bay Area who I haven’t played for, that really, at this point in time is a viable option, and that’s the Oakland Raiders,” Owens said, “Given the opportunity, if that’s on their radar for me to come in and help them win some ball games, and ultimately help them try to win a championship, then I’ll take that challenge on.”

The Jets just took Shebow. I dont think Tannenbaum and Rex are afraid of rolling the dice (but then again, that deal probably has more to do with Shebow’s marketability so its a bad example on my part).

Herock has no risk of being fired at GB.

Pete Carrol needs a QB badly. And he had no problem hitching his wagon to Tavarius Jackson.

I can list other examples but I think I made my point.

But I also see yours and what youre getting at. It’s worth considering.

You are the only person who claims the OSU stunned TP’s growth. I debated (not argued) that point with you using your statement to show how unrealistic it was, but that doesn’t mean I agree with your statement/ claim.
According to the article posted by BM, TP improved every year at THE OSU. If you have anything to support your claim/ statement, it will give your statement more credibility.

  161. Thec Says:

Great article Steve. Most of the NATION was wondering what TP’s progress was. Seems like he will be a viable NFL QB, contrary to some of the posters on the blog.

  162. Raider O Says:

Thx for the input Dakota (Mr. Obvious). You bring so much.

  163. Raider Riff Says:

Yes unrealistic. The pressure to win at some of these programs is a result of the fans and boosters insane love for the game.

ND doesnt have the advantages it once had with recruiting. It’s not a place players want to go play. But because the fans and administration still think its the New York Yankees of college football, they cant understand why theyre not challenging for national championships anymore. ND’s NBC deal means nothing these days.

ND has gone thru a number of very good college coaches and it wasnt because they couldnt coach.

Their current staff is excellent. Top notch. But the pressure is already mounting and we will soon see Kelly fired because he doesnt live up to the fantasy that is ND.

These days, the only way ND can stay relevant is to constantly be cycling coaches and promising a return to the glory years. The fans and boosters seem to be buying that and will continue to do so the next decade just as they did the previous.

OSU doesnt have the academic requirements that ND does so it has better looking girls. And anyone that knows Ohio knows that the girls there are a special breed. So OSU has that going for them when recruiting. But they are still at an disadvantage to the warm weather schools. They will never be as dominant as they once were, but the fans and boosters dont understand that. OSU’s proud tradition and will power to be great should make them relevant and competing for a title twice a decade, but to expect it every single year just isnt realistic. But good luck telling someone from Ohio that. If they had any idea how much better places like Florida, Texas, or California are, they wouldnt be living in Ohio.

Your evidence supports my claim. Now lets get past that.

If you want to argue whether guys like Tressell and Meyer did the right thing. Game on, lets do it.

Once again, it doesnt matter whether you agree with the philosophy or not. Some schools (and NFL teams) do it, others dont have that luxury.

Very rare is the situation like what Leinart walked into at USC or Rogers at Green Bay.

USC has sacrificed teams in the past. And they did it again with Barkley. You cant say the philosophy doesnt work. And now as a result, whomever is sitting behind Barkley is going to be that much better following this season. Heck, this philosophy produced Matt Cassel and the guy never played a down!

Its what Kiffin wanted to do with Russel he just wasnt given the leash to do it.

With an athletic Wheeler and athletic Curry/Burris surrounding him, his lack of range could be minimized.

That depends on Reggie and/or Goodell. Since McClain HAS been convicted (even though it’s being appealed to a jury trial), Goodell would be within his rights to suspend him.

What I’d REALLY like to see is one of the youngsters (Goethel or Stupar) TAKE the job from McClain. Make McClain fight to get it back.

Carson quit on THEM not the other way around. Cincy very much wanted to keep him as their QB. Mike Brown was very upset that Palmer “retired”.

If Bengals didn’t want him around they would’ve been overjoyed to get out of the big contract Palmer signed.

The fact they “gave him up” was cuz Carson told ‘em he would never play for them again.

one trade could be Rolando McClain for Rey Mauluga.

“An assault charge stemming from a February 5 bar incident against Bengals MLB Rey Maualuga was thrown out in a Hamilton County court Thursday.
The case was settled in mediation. Maualuga could still face discipline from the NFL, but it certainly won’t be nearly as harsh as it might’ve been had he been convicted. Maulauga, 25, is entering the final season of his rookie contract. He finished last year with 88 tackles and three forced fumbles.”

  295. Raider O Says:

I LM too. I never understood that. Do players play the game because they love it and they love to compete, or because they love money?

  296. Raider O Says:

I like Sir Charles. He is funny.

  297. Bob Marley Says:

I’m surprised that Denarius Moore does not appear to have bulked up even a little this offseason, that being said, if he keeps performing no one will care.

Then again, maybe it’s his body type, Marvin Harrison always looked too skinny and that’s who Moore reminds me of.

  298. Plunketthead Says:

Some of us have a fire that burns inside to compete and win. It did not matter what the game was or who you were or how big you were. I played with intensity and I wanted to hurt people.

I have met people who looked the part but never had that fire I did. Some people get injured or bored and lose it.

I lost that fire more then once throughout my playing days. The first time the fire went out was Peewee ball when I figured out I could not the ball and at Jr High badmittin championship. I embarrassed a lot of fools but Susie Wheeler beat me in the championship and I hate her to this day.

And the last time the fire went out for good when my teammates at family billards expected me to show up for matches sober.

  299. Plunketthead Says:

Ever play with a huge lineman in school who looked the part, had all the skills and was expected to play by parents and coaches but just did not have the heart to play?

I believe a lot of these guys get to the pros and they are sick and tired of it.. They would rather play play video games or become a doctor or a layabout or whatever.
But they are getting the bucks so they show up and go through the motions even though there is no fire burning inside to play the game

  300. Bob Marley Says:

    Plunketthead.

Ever play with a huge lineman in school who looked the part, had all the skills and was expected to play by parents and coaches but just did not have the heart to play?.
    ——————————————————

No, but I played with a huge Center in high school basketball, had some moves and soft touch around the basket but always overweight and soft, no heart at all, drove us crazy and didn’t amount to much, great guy too, very funny.

  301. Raider O Says:

    Plunk,

I understand what you are saying. I wasn’t the best athlete, but I was an overacheiver. I competed before and after the whistle. I enjoyed being on the field and playing sports. I wanted to win so bad, I was willing to do anything to win. Play sick, injured, or tired. Just Win Baby!!

  302. Raider O Says:

  304. Hardline Says:

The Lakers are out of the series 3 games down as they are.

Lakers need to re-build with all new players: Kobe and Gasol are over-the-hill. Bynum has not panned out as a truly great center due to a lax attitude and injuries. The rest of the team is just flotsom floating in the water banging up against the dock.

Mike Brown isn’t the Lakers future coach: he’s too mundane for Hollywood, and has an ignorant way in showing his authority to the players.

I think it is time, like the Raiders, for the Lakers to rid themselves of Buss family bred and insider management, acquire some great young talent, and win championships again.

True. But the more likely situation: Raider fans boo Palmer off the field and they rush Pryor in before he’s ready and ruin his career. And we go from having two excellent Q prospects to none very quickly.

Jim Harbaugh: Randy Moss ‘like a coach’ for 49ers

Scanning through a few items from Jim Harbaugh’s interview with KNBR-AM in San Francisco this week:

    • The 49ers coach has repeatedly praised Randy Moss for his speed and production on the field during practice, but we know Harbaugh prizes intelligent players, and this is where the 35-year-old wideout is scoring points: “In the classroom, he sits in the front row, he soaks up the knowledge and also gives the feedback, too,” Harbaugh said. “He’s a coach. He’s like a coach. You know, like the way Alex Smith is now becoming. I mean Alex knows as much as anybody, as much as any of our offensive coaches do at this point. And Randy has picked it up so fast because he’s seen so much football.”

    • Harbaugh squeezed every drop out of his roster last season, forging San Francisco’s offense into a battering, run-first attack. The team has used this offseason to stock up on pass-catchers by acquiring Moss, former New York Giants wideout Mario Manningham and rookie A.J. Jenkins. Smith also will throw to Michael Crabtree, a sometimes puzzling performer who earned high praise from his coach on Friday.

    • We all recall the mildly hurt feelings when Harbaugh and Co. snuck into the Peyton Manning derby. That’s yesterday. Smith and his coach are in a good place here in May and Harbaugh is again the young man’s champion: “Just to watch him mature physically in front of our eyes, even though he’s 28 years old,” Harbaugh said. “I think if you look at some of the pictures of him when he first came into the league as a young, skinny 20-year-old, and watch him develop and watch him — maybe call it a late-bloomer physically, but he’s really a man now. A real strong man.”

    Sounds like hyperbole to me.

Moss is Moss and Smith is the QB, don’t expect big numbers from Moss.

When the pads come on….he will play slower and he will not work hard consistently and if he doesn’t get the ball or if he is not involved in the play, then he will take the play off and he will not block on running plays.

Knapp definitely needs to produce TDs. I expect to score at least as much as last season since CP and DMc are starting together with an off season. Nothing less.

I dont remember Houston using any trickery but I do remember them putting pts on the board.

With the history of injuries on this Raider team, I’d like to see carries spread around as much as possible. I like to imagine late in the season (better yet, in a playoff game) a wildcat package with Pryor, Jones and/or Goodman making a play.

Hue Jackson sucked. Jackson relied on Janikowsky waaaay too much. If you remember the 2nd to last game against KC we were winning 10-6, and driving late in the fourth. I was thinking at the time, we MUST get six!! We drove down to the red zone and Jackson ran Bush up the gut three straight times and settled for the FG. He never once took a shot. The FG just meant a TD would tie the game. Which is exactly what happened. Fukk Hue Jackson. Anyone will be better than that gutless douche.

Oakland Raiders wide receiver Denarius Moore’s performance during training camp earned the 2011 fifth round pick a starting role. After catching 33 passes for 618 yards, an 18.7-yard average that ranked fourth among NFL receivers with 30 or more receptions, and five touchdowns in 13 games last season, Moore has surely gained the attention of opposing NFL defensive backs.

According to Paul Gutierrez of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, Moore is fine with that.

“I still don’t look at it any different,” Moore said. “I just come out and do the job I’m supposed to do, understand what the coaches want and get my timing down with the quarterback and understand that we have a connection.”

Moore’s big-play ability was not a surprise. In 52 games at Tennessee, Moore caught 112 passes for 2,004 yards, a 17.8-yard average, and averaged 20.9 yards on 47 receptions as a senior. The 6-foot, 194-pound wideout ran a 4.43 at the Combine and showed off his speed and soft hands during training camp. Adding more routes to his repertoire should help Moore take the next step.

“He’s so explosive and can do so many things down the field, but for him to take that next step he needs to get more balls that aren’t deep balls or big posts down the field for touchdowns,” quarterback Casrson Palmer said. “He needs to catch slants and curls and digs and things like that. And the way things are lined up he’s the guy.

“He’s our ‘X’ receiver and I’m excited for him. I know he’s excited about this year and he’s got a lot to prove.”

    When’s the next OTA ?

Be interesting to see if Slow is there.

A little investigative reporting might give us an idea of when Slow’s jury trial is likely to occur. Could the trial be delayed long enough for Slow to be available to the Raids for most of or all of 2012 ?

At this point, Raids must proceed with the premise that Slow will NOT be available and certainly can’t be counted on.

Which leads to the question – who is manning the MLB position ?

Goethel might be the favorite. Injury prone and no real NFL experience to speak of. Burris ? Stupar ? Hard to envision a middle or late round rookie stepping right in. Wheeler ? Possible, but like Stupar, undersized. Ihenacho ?

Might just wind up being Curry. Might not be cerebral enough and coverage would be a major concern, but he is a thumper. AC will stop you in your tracks.

An extreme longshot is Dave Tollefson. At the least, expect to see him tried at LB out of necessity.

Definitely seems that a FA signing or picking up a cut or practice squad player from another team is in the cards.

My guess is Slow doesn’t play for the Raids in 2012. Might even wind up on IR as a face saving measure. That gives him a time out to get his legal issues and head together, and gives Reggie and DA the entire year to contemplate whether Slow has any future with the S&B.

Bottom line – Although Slow’s likely absence will cause the Raids to scramble to find a replacement he is far from irreplacable.

Might turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Given the financial reconstruction issues, I think Raider Reg is getting some bang for his buck. 4th-7th rd players and inexpensive short yr contracts to vet players from SB franchises…
and its not too late to get a vet LB. Raiders can let the cream of the young crop to rise then get a vet if necs much later.

  363. Bob Marley Says:

Rolando McClain should be available to play, as much some people here are calling for ridiculous suspensions ranging from 8 games to one year.

If Aqib Talib can keep playing without Goodell suspending him, so can McClain.

“Aqib Talib has had several conduct related issues since his NFL career started.

At the NFL rookie symposium in July 2008, Talib was involved in a fistfight with fellow Buccaneers rookie Cory Boyd.

On August 20, 2009, Talib allegedly battered a taxi driver and he was arrested by Florida Highway Patrol and booked into the Pinellas County jail, charged with resisting arrest without violence and simple battery.

In March 2011, police in Garland, Texas issued a felony warrant for Talib for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after accusing him of firing a gun at his sister’s boyfriend. He was later released on $25,000 bond, Talib was indicted on the charge in May 2011.”

    - Like I said, he has not been suspended 1 game yet, he will at some point, his trial is coming up and once it’s over Goodell will likely slap him with a few games, but it appears he wants to wait for the result of the trial before passing judgement.

From an “outsider” in the midwest it always seemed weird that they chose the name Golden State. That’s like the Bulls being the “Praire State” Bulls or the “Land of Lincoln” Bulls.

Warriors officially leaving Oakland, Raiders on deck.

    ^^^^^^^^
What a impulsive move by Lacob and jumping the gun a bit.

The traffic at the Pier site for Arena is going to be beyond horrendous and public transportation of far better suited at Coliseum. Why have the W’s been selling out since they have stunk it up the last 20 years? Because getting to the games at the Coliseum is easily accessible.

If they move to SF, season ticket prices will sky rocket and there is no guarantee high priced free agents will come play with the W’s.

Attracting big free agents comes down to WINNING and having a legitimate organization and management structure.

Warriors won’t sell out as much as they used to if they move to SF. Prices will sky rocket and they will still suck! hahahaha

Hey Dknight, while I feel bad for Oakland if they do indeed lose the warriors, your reasoning about transportation to and from are a little off the mark. The SF Giants ballpark is right there and 80 or so times a year over 40,000 are shuttles in and out without any problems. While no direct Bart train will go there, the embarcadero or Montgomery st. Station are only a few blocks away. If the Warriors move to SF, transportation will not be a problem. Maybe you’re confusing this area with the candlestick area. Even though I live within a few miles of candlestick it is much easier and quicker to get over to the o to see the Raiders! Which suits me just fine!

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    Raider Guy,

You really did it now. Every time I see old footage of Lester Hayes I just really go off. These young fans on here who never experienced the Raiders of old know nothing. Every time I hear them go on and on, I laugh.

Every time I hear Nnamdi mentioned as a “shut-down” corner I lose my breakfast and lunch. Well, you can imagine I have been vomiting a lot in recent years.

Nnamdi is a lil gnat buzzing around what fell off Lestre Hayes dinner plate: Nnamdi had 11 INT’s in 9 seasons while Hayes had 39 INT’s in 8 seasons playing with the Raiders.

Nnamdi at best is a pretender and at worst a sclub. Actually I wouldn’t give 2 dead flies for him. AD did something right when he traded him away. Nnamdi in fact is a “no shut down, shut down corner”, and that’s God’s honest truth.

The main problem with the Raiders is that 1) their staff the past 10 years didn’t know football; 2) Raiders’ players were mainly untalented under performers; 3) AD suffered from dementia and should have been removed from management control after he dismissed Gruden.

Hopefully Reggie and Mark understand this and are working to rectify it.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    DJ,

If I am Nnamdi, and the ball is never coming my way, I change position on the field in defiance of the Coach’s order and scheme, so that I am where the ball will be thrown.

I then go to AD, and tell him, if the Coach won’t put me in a position to defend actual passes, I’ll do it myself; if you don’t like that AL, release me, and release me now.

But Nnamdi was a good lil dog. He has no fire and would never, ever disobey orders, even though he looked like a total jackass and will forgotten soon after he retires.

For God sakes Gio, a backup safety got 5 INT’s last year. Nobody is raving about him either.

  400. Hardline Says:

    DJ,

I am not sure about Bartell; I don’t know how he can play.

  408. guest123 Says:

Because of Al Davis’s lawsuits in the 80’s and 90’s for anti-trust violations the NFL developed twelve criteria for relocation. This as well as approval of at least 24 other owners is required for relocation, and legally effectively heads off language that could lead to further anti-trust litigation.
The 12 relocation criteria from Article 4.3 of the NFL Constitution and Bylaws:
    1. The team’s service to its current city and stadium;
    2. Fan loyalty;
    3. Stadium adequacy;
    4. Public financial support of the team by the city and taxpayers;
    5. Team’s financial performance;
    6. Whether there is already a team in the relocation city;
    7. Team’s attempt to address stadium situations in its current city;
    8. Degree to which the team may have contributed to stadium problems;
    9. Relocation demographics;
    10. Effect of relocation on current television contracts and labor agreements;
    11. Effect of relocation on anticipated television contracts, particularly as related to media market size;
    12. Effect of relocation on NFL division alignments, rivalries, travel requirements, etc.

Mark Davis has grounds on all 12 criteria if he wanted to move the Raiders. It’ll be interesting to see if the plans for Coliseum city fall through. There’s a lot of money down in LA that they are ready to throw at Davis, that’s for sure.

back in the day when my uncle Sal would take me to the games, he would make the thickest cold cut sandwiches and cole slaw and my cousin and I would help him out on Sunday Mornings, then take the BART from Fremont and hang with my Uncles buddies. Good times!

  448. guest123 Says:

I have high hopes for Conroy Black & Aaron Henry to push for a spot in the secondary. I have heard that Kaelin Burnett has had some good reviews from coach Allen. And Dominique Hamilton is someone to keep an eye on if he can be that space eating NT we need.

  449. RaiderRockstar Says:

last time I went to a Raider game in Oakland, it was a preseason game against the AZ Cards on Sunday night. My best friend and his wife accompanied my wife and I. no tailgate, think we got fast food on the way there (barf).

some drunks were behind us and start puking. Almost got some on my wife. she was freaking out. plus she wore a tank top and that bay area breeze was chilly on her. not her best experience. we won the game, but it wasn’t real exciting. I think Andrew Walter was our best QB that day. Culpepper was just acquired and didn’t play. McCown sucked.

remember we were pretty close to the field and we were razzing the H out of Neil Rackers & Scott Player :)

  450. RaiderRockstar Says:

    DE: ShoNasty, Houston, Tollefson, Crawford

I know the odds of Travis Ivey cracking the 53 man roster aren’t real good, but I’m pulling for him!!

  451. guest123 Says:

Been a long time since I last attended a Raider game at the OAC. Pre-LA Raiders era. But I did see some games down in LA Coliseum and later at Mile High Stadium in Denver.

  454. hwnrdr Says:

Yup, thanks for that! I knew we wouldn’t have gotten swept! Brien posted on my FB page that it was David Stern’s intervention…lol
And yes, it will probably end tonight, but you never know! If it does, then I can relax the rest of the season! :)

  455. Dakota Says:

Lakers will be back eventually. Dr. Buss will realize what a mistake he made trying to let his idiot child run the organization, again, and Jeanie will finally be put in charge. They will find a way to dump Kobe’s salary on someone and we will pick up a superstar again.

    Just a matter of time.

  456. hwnrdr Says:

Also, you have to give it to the Spurs! Down 24 Saturday afternoon, then went on a 24-0 run…lasting 7 and a half minutes…is that a record?
Also, Chris Paul looked like he was taking over last night, then…well, Paul should’nt have tried to be a hero, my opinion!

  457. hwnrdr Says:

Dakota, isn’t it in his contract about a no trade? Not sure where I heard that from…

  458. Bob Marley Says:

I’d love for Travis Ivey to emerge, but he couldn’t make it as a back-up NT for two 3-4 teams before (MIA-CLE), might be a Terdell Sands type of player, huge but can’t play.

I’m certain that he won’t beat out Bilukidi for a roster spot.

  459. hwnrdr Says:

Also, Dr Buss better realize and put Jeanie back in charge!

  460. hwnrdr Says:

Kobe has a no trade clause, but he might be willing to waive it once he realizes the Lakers are dumping salaries around him in order to save money and have no intention of trying to field a championship caliber team and no assets to improve in the short term.

With a 11 point lead they should have gone inside for 12 strait posesions.. Control the tempo no fasr breaks. Get to the line. Beat them up. Brown called for iso on the wing.. Its his fault..

  485. DEATHROW 55 Says:

Bynum can shoot over Perkins or ibaka, Kobe can’t shoot over that string bean mofo Durant, he will rape harden and shirpoloshia all day with his j, but Durant is a challenge for him pass the ball Kobe to Bynum gasol artest Blake. Sessions ain’t in at the end cause he has no defence Blake is more scrappier. This is why I say DARREN WILLIAMS would cancel out westrook, cp3, Parker, Ty Lawson, conolly.

    WWWWHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAA! WWWHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAA!!

  488. hwnrdr Says:

During the time out, it looked like Gasol told Kobe to give it to him because he will be open, which he was, and Kobe did…right there he should have either taken the shot, or drive the lane to possibly take the shot and/or foul. Why’d he tried to pass to Artest with Durant standing there?
Anyways, it is what it is…

  489. hwnrdr Says:

Rockstar, come on man! And yes, what Kobe does with those shots he takes, either making them or drawing teh foul…he is the best of doing those! I don’t care of what he did, or does off court…that is his personal life, but I do thank him for what he gave me as a fan…even with Shaq, Gasol, Artest, Bynum….whoever…and that was 5 in 13 years!

  495. RaiderRockstar Says:

my point was, Laker fans are hypocrits

    Wade = playing hurt

“Practice MVP” Criner looking to improve upon performance

    Paul G

ALAMEDA — If there was such a thing as MVP of the Raiders’ first open-to-the-media OTA practice, rookie receiver Juron Criner would have been feted.
The fifth-round draft pick was that good last Tuesday.
The obvious challenge, then, is for for the wideout from North Las Vegas by way of the University of Arizona to maintain his form going forward, especially as the second week of OTA’s get underway today at the team’s compound.
“I feel like it was a good practice, but that sets the tone for how I need to practice the rest of the time here, (for) the years to come,” Criner said Tuesday.
“It just shows the confidence. Once you start to get in your playbook and once you’re able more to just play and not have to think about what you’re doing, it starts to show.”
Sandwiched between cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke and strong safety Tyvon Branch, Criner went up between the two of them to pull down a 50-yard bomb from quarterback Carson Palmer for a highlight reel touchdown.
Later, Criner went Cris Collingsworth worth an over-the-shoulder grab on a bomb from Terrelle Pryor, beating Pat Lee in the process.
All this, remember, from a 6-foot-3, 221-pound wideout with supposedly not enough speed to make such plays. His pedestrian 40-yard dash time of 4.68 seconds at the Combine would have turned off the previous Raiders’ regime.
“I feel like I was able to do that because you have to work the route. You’ve just got to try to eat up the cushion, stick the route. Just referring back to my college coach, you stick the route and try to get his hips to twitch any way you can and that will help you.”
And in going across the middle, and in traffic, he was able to adjust mid-route to pick Matt Leinart’s slighty-behind pass out of the air.
“He saved Carson, he saved myself, he saved Matt also,” Pryor said of Criner. “He’s a player. He has learned, just like myself and everybody else, he’s going to be a good one. He catches everything that comes near him. I was very impressed with him.”
A year ago, the Raiders’ fifth-round draft pick was a revelation in receiver Denarius Moore, whose 18.7-yards-per-catch average and five touchdown receptions led Oakland. No doubt, the Raiders are thinking they found another late-round steal in Criner.
Oh to have been a fly on Palmer’s shoulder as the two waked off the practice field following Criner’s, ahem, Practice MVP performance.
“That’s basically what he was telling me, that right there sets the standard,” Criner said of his walk-off conversation with Palmer. “You expect nothing less of yourself. He was just telling me, if you go at practice without making a play, you should be mad at yourself because you’re expected to do that day in and day out.
“When you get the chance, you’ve just got to come down with the ball. Like my old college coach used to tell me, when the ball’s in the air it belongs to you.”

Palmer has the bigger arm. He is a better option out of the 2 in my opinion.

Thing is, which I dont think RRS understood, Im not comparing their ability. Im stating that the 2 are identical physical specimens. H/W/S.
