McClain at OTAs, practicing
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, May 21st, 2012 at 10:20 am in Oakland Raiders.
There is no media availability until Tuesday, but checked in with the Raiders and was told Rolando McClain is in Alameda and practicing with the team while awaiting appeal on his conviction in Decatur, Ala. for assault, reckless endagerment, illegal discharge of a firearm and menacing.
McClain was sentenced last Thursday to 180 days in jail and fined $2,000 by a municipal court judge, then freed pending appeal. Appealing to the circuit court would include a jury trial. McClain’s attorney, Harvey Steinberg called the verdict “meaningless” in anticipation of a jury trial.
Rishard Tapscott, the victim in the case, identified McClain as the man who fired a gun next to his ear following a dispute. Tapscott has also filed a civil lawsuit against McClain.
The Raiders’ statement upon McClain’s conviction said “The team will continue to closely monitor the legal process, understanding that when appropriate the NFL will review the situation under its personal conduct policy.”
The club also has the option for disciplining McClain for conduct detrimental to the club _ the incident occurred on Nov. 30 while he was in Decatur for the funeral of a family member.

T.O. wants to play for 49ers, Raiders
How would you feel about Terrell Owens playing for the 49ers? What about the Raiders? Either way, it appears that T.O. has pinpointed both Bay Area teams as squads that he would be interested in playing for in 2012.
Here is some of what the former Niners star had to say recently on “The Drive” on 95.7 The Game, per Yardbarker.com:
On the 49ers:
“Would I have loved to have ended my career there, obviously signing a one- or two-year deal, absolutely. … It is what it is at this point. I don’t make those decisions and they were well aware I was out there so they felt they had the best man (Randy Moss) on their roster.”
On the Raiders:
“There’s really only one team left in the Bay Area who I haven’t played for that really at this point in time is a viable option and that’s the Oakland Raiders. Given the opportunity if that’s on their radar for me to come in and help them win some ballgames and ultimately help them try to win a championship, then I’ll take that challenge on. I definitely feel I have a lot of football left in me. I think Carson (Palmer) knows that.”

good news, because if he wasn’t and Reggie decided to retain him … he wouldn’t know the new Allen/Tarver defense
this doesn’t mean the Raiders have given him a pass on all the legal problems. Just means we’re taking the cautious approach. It’s entirely possible that we checked his contract and don’t have grounds to terminate him and recoup money just for an arrest and some bad publicity.
If he goes to jail, that could change things imo
one thing is certain – I know Reggie will have LaMonte Winston & Napolean Kaufman talk to this kid as long as he’s a Raider. Don’t know if he’s willing to change or be mentored though. Eddie Anderson babysitting JaWalrus all offseason long didn’t do him any good!

Unless there is some legal issue we don’t know about that makes suspending McClain for detrimental conduct, the fact he’s at OTA’s is troubling. Reggie McK brings in the troubled Packer Underwood and allows a guilty RoMac a free pass to participate in OTA’s.

San Antonio’s win makes it just the 4th time under the current playoff format that a team swept each of the 1st 2 rounds of the postseason. That might not be as great as it sounds. Each of the previous 3 lost in the following round with Miami the lone squad to take the Conference Finals to 7 games.

I see both sides to this debate. As stated above, it’s good for McStupid to learn the defense, in the event he emerges from the trial unpunished and avoids jail time. If the league is waiting for the trial before they enforce any possible suspension and he’s declared innocent of all 4 charges, he wont face a suspension from the NFL or the Raiders.
If he’s getting all the starting MLB reps and then ends up in jail, we’ve wasted our time. Hard position for Reggie to be in. I’m sure Reggie wants to show that he trusts his players, but also wants to do what is in the team’s best interest. I’m sure the best case scenario is he starts all 16 games this year, dominates and then avoids jail time & suspension. I think there’s a better chance he gets struck by lightning..

We would save $1.2 million by cutting McClain this year … then we’d take a $7.5 million cap hit next year, Right?
Reggie probably knows what our cap situation will be like next offseason. Maybe that cap hit is a tough pill to swallow?
If we keep RoMac around, then he goes to jail, we may be able to terminate that contract “for cause” and keep the guaranteed money that hasn’t been paid out. If we cut him before that, maybe not. Smart move Reggie. Let’s find out what we’re dealing with here.
I’m not going to assume Reggie & Dennis are ok with having knuckleheads on the roster, just because McClain is free to practice and learn the defense

Like most in here, I’m more concerned about the football player. If he still sucks, but manages to turn his life around? good for him, but I want him out of here anyways!
If he continues to be a turd off the field, but transforms into a stud MLB? he’s worth waiting for regarding jail time & suspensions. This is coming from a choir boy.

#59 yes, there are valid points to bolth sides of the argument.
/////////////////
As for people pulling wool over their eyes, like McClains lawyer,”“This is meaningless,” attorney Harvey Steinberg told the Huntsville Times of the verdict”
Judges have to have evidence to pass down a guilty verdict. Not saying that appealing the case isn’t a good legal move, it will be costly, and hard to find 12 people from their area for a jury, hell you’d almost have to have been under a rock or have no interest in football at all not to have heard of it.
In the case there is the detrimental to the team clause, not letting him practice might not look good for the team, by not excluding him they are setting themselves up to be able to say they were completely fair in their actions.

Arm strength IS important but so is giving your best effort. Being the last to show up at practice and one of the first to leave is NOT showing leadership..which is very important to any football team.
Don’t act like it’s silly that anyone thinks Jamarcus is a complete bust. It is widely recognized by almost EVERYBODY…media, fans, coaches, other players that Jamarcus is one of the biggest busts in NFL history.

I’m not gonna puff out my chest that the Raiders are an organization that will absolutely not tolerate neer do wells on the team.
They say that, but the signing of Underwood alone shows that not to be the case.
I don’t know Reggies definition of “high character guys” but if you read the rap sheet on Underwood I wouldn’t think they have a strict “no tolerance” stance.
That’s fine, as I want to win and I realize nobody’s perfect, and I DO believe in 2nd chances, but I think we can take any staunch statements of “zero tolerance” with a grain of salt and maybe something more along the lines of just stuff GM’s and HC’s say.
I’m sure the “preference” is to have all high character” guys on the team, but I don’t think it’s a requirement with Reggie and DA necessarily.

this is not my area of expertise. I was under the impression he gets some sort of bonus each year. Or that the guaranteed money was spread out over the entire contract’s length. I’m not some holy roller who wants a team of choir boys. But I was hoping that we’d get a better mix of them given the reggimes credo of accountability. We’ve had to endure the scholarships of the AD era and it appears we are going to have to endure some sort of redux of it now. Call it growing pains on the way to Reggie’s vision of the team.
If R. McClain had shown some promise, some accountability for his poor play earlier, some glimpse that his #8 overall draft status wasn’t a complete lie, some reason to think he’s not a bust, then I might be willing to give him a chance.
But when you couple his off field trouble with his on-field performance, and I gotta ask; why is anyone defending him anymore? Nothing to see here, because he’s a low character guy and not talented on-field to warrant a 2nd chance.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
For you clowns that still don’t get the importance of arm strength. Andy Dalton is doomed! The Bengals better get somebody down to Mobile and tell him not to come back without JaMarcus!
—
Arm strength IS important but so is giving your best effort. Being the last to show up at practice and one of the first to leave is NOT showing leadership..which is very important to any football team.
Don’t act like it’s silly that anyone thinks Jamarcus is a complete bust. It is widely recognized by almost EVERYBODY…media, fans, coaches, other players that Jamarcus is one of the biggest busts in NFL history.
We aren’t talking about some small contingent of naysayers.
However, the contingent that thinks he is anything BUT one of the biggest busts in sports history is extremely small. In fact, I can’t think of any reputable writer or analyst who thinks otherwise.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Hmmm. A bunch of lazy writers and analysts vs the guy who actually COACHED JR here in Oakland. Think I’ll roll with Knapp on this one:
Q: Is the quarterback position less of an issue than when it was with JaMarcus being the starter?
A: “This may sound like a typical coach backing his players, but along with John DeFilippo, who was helping our quarterbacks coach, I was very pleased with JaMarcus’ finish in his career here. In his last six games – keep in mind, that the year that we were here, he went through three play-callers; Lane Kiffin, myself and Tom Cable. That’s tough on anybody to play. He, really, the last six games played at a pretty high level. He had almost a 90 (passer) rating. So, he wasn’t as established as Carson, but I was pleased to see the growth and, unfortunately, the staff got blown up and had to be readjusted. So, I couldn’t see the development continue.”
May 21st, 2012 at 12:28 pm
when you couple his off field trouble with his on-field performance, and I gotta ask; why is anyone defending him anymore? Nothing to see here, because he’s a low character guy and not talented on-field to warrant a 2nd chance.
***
@G123
a bunch of people wanted to see JaWalrus make the big leap to success in YR#3 as well. Can’t blame fans for wishing our players the best. However, you and I seem to think he’s beyond repair. I was ready to trade this trash BEFORE he got arrested.

We can all be unforgiving bastardz i think.
I for one am still ticked off at the “Stafford Whiff” from McClain. Also, he has done nothing to impress me at all since he’s gotten her..just another big disappointment REGARDLESS of his off field stuff. If he was on the streets of Calcutta feeding the homeless I still wouldn’t be excited about him.
Can he be better with better coaching? I guess. I hope he can.
It wasn’t just the “Stafford Whiff”, I just recall him doing anything very good on the field, yet I saw alot of bad.
Maybe his injury has alot to do with it. Even so, he doesn’t seem to make any big plays and seems to be the culprit on many that the opposing team makes.
I don’t want to feel this way about our MLB, but I can’t help it.
I’d prefer he be that guy he was supposed to be out of Alabama.
May 21st, 2012 at 12:30 pm
Yikes, I wonder if Saban still thinks McClain is “one of the smartest players he’s ever coached.”

Bresnahan, Boyd & Blackstock aren’t good at what they do, but neither is McClain.
I think people are afraid to write him off because he’s still young and has potential … Gotta ask, if McClain was a 7th rounder in 2010 or undrafted would we still be hanging on to him?

I think for a guy to be respected as the “leader” on your defense, he should be a guy who is respected for both his on and off the field reputation. How can McClain serve either of those purposes?
If they try to shove McClain down their throats as him being “that guy” there are players who are gonna think it’s a joke.
Can they point to his onfield play as “that’s how you guys wanna be”? Definitely not his off field stuff.

Correct me if i’m wrong but I see this team..or ANY team as needing a leader for their defense.
Traditionally, isn’t it imperative that the MLB fill that role?
Maybe not…it’s what i’ve heard is the case though.
Do the Raiders “work around” that?
With GB in their hey day it was a defensive end named Reggie White who filled that role, so I guess it isn’t a must that it be our MLB.

May 21st, 2012 at 1:03 pm
this is not my area of expertise. I was under the impression he gets some sort of bonus each year. Or that the guaranteed money was spread out over the entire contract’s length. Remember when you were telling me about the excellerated money all coming due at one time if we cut him immediately? Well, I was hoping that since it hasn’t been paid out yet and he gets busted, we could keep the money. What am I missing? Did I get the whole thing screwed up?
*****************
Signing Bonus… This is where the cap vs cash problem confuses guys. Romac was given $23 million dollars CASH by the team the day he signed his contract, the CAP hit is prorated over the 5 years. Romac already has the money, the only thing we are still paying him is his salary ($970k this season) and any non-guaranteed performance bonuses (which are nearly impossible to find if you don’t have access to the contract itself)

@G123
Nathan Stupar is hoping to hear his name called this weekend. The Penn State linebacker impressed at the Combine with the fastest 3 cone time for any linebacker and the fourth fastest 60 shuffle. He made a lot of calls for Tom Bradley’s defense. Stupar was also a special teams standout early in his career at Penn State, a good quality for a guy who does not figure to start right away on the pro level, with two blocked punts.
Disciplined, instinctive football player who’s shown solid development in his game. Remains disciplined with assignments, chases the action hard and consistently puts himself in a position to make plays on the ball. Breaks down well, effectively uses his hands to protect himself and slides off blocks. Moves well in every direction of the field, gets depth on pass drops and shows a burst of straight-line speed.
Source: Sports Illustrated
Stupar started sparingly at Penn State but is projected as a special teams contributor – Fox Sports

You’re right about that. I was referring to his past problems with the murder case being something that would hinder respect for the man as a whole, but…it seems as though he has really made attempts to make amends for all that and by all accounts is that off field leader now.
This is a good lesson for McClain that it CAN be turned around. He needs to show that he is in fact “making amends”. He does not accomplish that by threatening witnesses as recently as two months ago.

I doubt any of the remaining MLB’s in the FA pool would demand anything more than $1.2 million this season – what do you think?
I mean, starting MLB for the Raiders sounds a lot more promising than hoping for some other team’s starter to get injured and then them offering MORE than $1.2 mil off the couch as an in-season replacement for a defense you probably aren’t well versed in, Right?
May 21st, 2012 at 1:36 pm
Keep bringing up that schit, 666. The more you talk about it, the more people know you’re into it.
May 21st, 2012 at 1:36 pm
I think 99% of the people on this blog would punch you in the face if you knocked on their door. The other 1% is you!
May 21st, 2012 at 1:37 pm
Stupar isn’t as good as Goethel who will be the MLB if,and that is one huge if,McClain can’t play.
May 21st, 2012 at 1:37 pm
Everyone on this blog knows about your attempt to have a sexual encounter with your own cousin.
This is not something that is news to anyone.
You are a sexual deviant.
If I catch you near a school I will shoot you!

I also think that Sandusky44 will replace John Wayne Gacy as the world most infamous pervert.

May 21st, 2012 at 1:42 pm
I love the way some on here try to lobby others to go along with their ideas like it actually has any bearing on what will happen with the team.In all likelihood McClain will be the starting MLB for our Oakland Raiders in 2012 regardless of what you decide we should do.And that is probably a good thing.
May 21st, 2012 at 1:43 pm
Dutch is another one who brings up that weird schit. Talked about trannies earlier. Sounds like a john had a bad experience once.

Lefty assuming McClain is innocent, or just that the trial will be parlayed until after this season?
May 21st, 2012 at 1:47 pm
666,
Maybe if you just STFU and talked football this would all end. You’re the one who takes these discussions to a personal level everyday. And today you’ve taken it to new heights, with your wannabe tough guy personal. Talking about shooting people. Let it go, loser. You’re the one who needs to talk football. I”m yet to see one single football related comment out of you yet. Guess you want to talk about child molestation for another hour or so. You tell me who the freak is. Like I said, shoot yourself.
May 21st, 2012 at 1:48 pm
Im rooting for Stupar, RRS.
Hope he makes the team. We need the depth.
If he beats out MCClain then I’ll be right here supporting him as well.
May 21st, 2012 at 1:49 pm
RR
Do you think that RM and DA will let this play out in court before doing anything…….or…..did they make up their minds already and are looking for an out in McClain’s contract?

To think that hacker wouldn’t take over MR’s handle is a little silly.
May 21st, 2012 at 1:54 pm
so now you hate on gay people?
What other minority would you like to bash here today loser!
May 21st, 2012 at 1:54 pm

@silver
tough call – I’m waiting for Reggie and/or Dennis to be interviewed. If BCZ is correct (which he usually is) money isn’t the issue here. Doesn’t sound like there is a way to withold any of that guaranteed money, as it was all paid up front in a signing bonus. So RM and DA are probably waiting to find out when the trial begins and what possible suspension or jail time he could receive. If he’s going to be out for an extended period of time, I’m sure they’ll want to have a backup plan [unless Goethel/Stupar is it]

Considering how much time RRS spends here, you tell me which is more likely:
1) Him actually working, at a real job, 9-5, m-f, with co-workers and supervisors who can see how much time he spends here, and they’re totally cool with it.
2) Stay at home dad, who only has to get a little housework done, babysit, etc before his wife, the bread winner, comes home, and all of the free time in between he spends bloggity blogging.
You tell me.

Remember all the games we lost and playoffs missed because we could not punt or kick the ball?

Have to get in first. Play well during the stretch, and get a little luck with the pairings….Giants proved that a lower seed can take it the distance….
It appears defense is going to be the key, so we have a long way to go. Not stopping long drives last year, killed us v. the Lions and Chargers.

Knapps game plan is designed (among other things) to keep the offense on the field. Move the ball and the chains and score 6 when you get to the red zone, not three.
We had far too many three and outs last year, it seemed.
I wonder what the stats were on that?

What a slap in the face to the REAL hardcore W’s fans that are located in the East Bay.
This says it all that Lacob is trying to cater to the big elite evil corporations and the 1%. Lacob just wants to try and make the team more valuable so he can sell and make a profit. He is selling out. He is just a greedy, rich piece of turd!
San Francisco is considered a more lucrative sports market and a waterfront arena would likely increase the Warriors value by tens of millions of dollars, said sports economist Andrew Zimbalist.
“It has more large corporations; it has more high-income people; it has a larger population base to draw from; and it potentially incorporates the market in San Jose,” he said.
Either way, the Warriors willingness to leave is “a slap in the face,” said Chris Dobbins, founder of Save Oakland Sports and a member of the Coliseum authority, which oversees the municipally-owned complex.
“We’re very upset,” Dobbins said.
If they name the team San Francisco Warriors that will be even more of slap in the face. Expect attendance to not be the same as it was in Oakland, especially if the team continues to SUCK!
An Arena near the Pier 30-32 site would cause terrible congestion and public transportation would be nightmare as well.
The fair weather corporate elite and 1% that Lacob is catering to will not support this team through thick and thin, especially when they continue to suck, like how the team was supported at Oracle Arena, when they have sucked for so long.

For the life of me I cannot figure out why people had a problem with Jerome Boyd and McClain covering the most dominate WR in the NFL?
May 21st, 2012 at 5:33 pm
Since I moved from the bay area 18 years ago, away from the sports teams I love, the RAIDERS, the W’s, the Sharks, and to a lessor extent the A’s (not a huge baseball fan…) does that make me a “sell out”, “greedy” or less of a fan than anyone else?
Or does it just make me an American choosing his/her right to move where I think it is in my best interests?
Don’t we all make decisions in our own best interests?
Isn’t Lacob doing the same thing?
Did the city of Oakland give him any $$$ to buy the Warriors? (PS: no they didn’t)
Its not like they are moving to South Dakota or even Sacramento.
They are moving like 8 miles away….

It might be a blessing in disguise; if he has to sit out a few games he could heal-up and have fresh-legs for the second half of the season (depending on how much jail/suspension time he gets)
Hopefully he gets everything squared with the coach and GM, convinces them he’s dedicated to the game and willing to put what it takes to bounce back
May 21st, 2012 at 6:33 pm
The City of Oakland has not so far taken advantage of having three major sports franchises in one area.
It has:
-A great bart-stop,
-Huge amounts of space in parking lot/surrounding area
-Steady flow of fans
-Great access to the Airport
And yet there has been no development, no real improvement in the area since at least the Gruden years, when I started traveling up to see games
I does not take a genius to understand that people want convenient place to grab some food/drinks before heading on bart, to other destinations or going to the Oakland ariport.
Plus people want to party before the games get some drinks and watch highlights of the morning games.
Not to mention the Jobs it would create for people
Just don’t understand why the City don’t take advantage of these things
May 21st, 2012 at 6:47 pm
You’re Reggie McKenzie.
You’ve already lost Kam Wimbley.
Your 2011 starting MLB is facing legal problems which might make him unavailable for 2012. Additionally, his health and durability is in question (I’m assuming Reggie knew about Slow’s stem cell treatment). And to top it off you’ve already seen the ‘JOG’ in Buffalo, the Stafford ‘WHIFF’ and some other less than inspiring play from this character.
So you bring in Wheeler. You draft Burris and Stupar.
Your LB roster now looks like this:
57 Burnett, Kaelin LB 6-4 234-R Nevada
56 Burris, Miles LB 6-2 236-R San Diego State
51 Curry, Aaron LB 6-2 255-4 Wake Forest
50 Goethel, Travis LB 6-2 240-2 Arizona State
53 Ihenacho, Carl LB 6-2 255-1 San Jose State
49 Kurn, Mario LB 6-2 238-R San Diego
55 McClain, Rolando LB 6-3 255-3 Alabama
54 Stupar, Nathan LB 6-2 238-R Penn State
52 Wheeler, Philip LB 6-2 240-4 Georgia Tech
Have you done enough to bolster this position ?
Are you satisfied with this group even if Slow is available in 2012 ? And are you prepared to roll with this crew in 2012 if he isn’t ?
Seems to me that this group is pretty weak. A lot of rookies and guys with little or no NFL experience. Your veterans are Curry and Wheeler. And this crew is going to be asked to learn and implement an entirely new and supposedly more complex defensive scheme.
Has Reggie done enough in this area ?
Would you trade a 4th for Demeco Ryans now ?
Would you have signed London Fletcher knowing what you know now ?
Of course, Slow MIGHT be available in 2012. Heck, he might even play like he’s worth something.
But the question remains…
Are you satisfied that Reggie has done enough to prepare for the possibility that Slow won’t be available and to compensate for the loss of Wimbley ?
This Raider fan isn’t.

All this guys pointing fingers at Rolando McClain, callig him names and acting so superior make me sick, do you even know his story?.
# 55 has overcome a lot in his life to get where he is, this is a guy who needs our support so he can stay in the good path, I hope Reggie and DA embrace the kid and give him the chance to redeem himself.
- Rolando McClain:
“To fully appreciate how Raiders rookie linebacker Rolando McClain got this far, it’s imperative to know where he has been.
McClain’s path is one encountered by many but successfully navigated by few, making his ascension to first-round NFL draft pick all the more remarkable.
For three years, the story has been told of how McClain’s skills and smarts made him the best linebacker in college, a two-time Dean’s List student, and the leader of Alabama’s first national championship team in 17 years.
How he emerged from a troubled upbringing in his hometown of Decatur to reach wealth last week in the NFL Draft is another story.
McClain grew up dealing with a tough neighborhood, tensions with his mother, and only occasional involvement with his father.
It’s a situation where one wrong step, or one less helpful hand from a community, can decide NFL millions or unfulfilled promise.
A drive through Decatur presents a picture of McClain’s childhood. There, in a disheveled neighborhood, is the housing project where McClain once lived.
Drugs and violence were prevalent.
Gang rivalries developed between the city’s two high schools. The kids at Decatur High were known as the “Homeboys,” and those from Austin High called themselves “Cash Money Boys.” Fights between the groups were common at a local McDonald’s.
Some of McClain’s childhood friends are succeeding in life, said Bruce Jones, the director of Decatur Youth Services, but others fell into jail or drugs.
Sports became a ticket out for McClain, a place he could unleash emotions he rarely shares and create a different path for his life.
Jones, a former North Alabama and NFL player in the 1980s before working with at-risk youths in Decatur, saw a talented boy who could be a handful at times.
“Some people would say he even had an attitude, and some will probably say he has that now,” said Jones, who met McClain around his fifth-grade year.
“But it takes that to be on the level he’s at. It’s not to say he didn’t associate with some of the knuckleheads, because he did. But he was strong-willed enough not to let it pull away from his goals.”
McClain left home at 15 and moved in with a friend’s family because of problems with his mother that escalated into her being barred from seeing him.
In December 2005, McClain received a court order to keep his mother away from him, according to court records. “We got into an argument,” McClain’s petition said. “My mom pushed + hit me several times. She left the room and got a knife. She threatened to kill me.”
During McClain’s senior year at Decatur High, his mother, Tonya Malone, was arrested and accused of threatening to kill “everyone at Decatur High School as well as everyone at the Morgan County Courthouse that had anything to do with her son,” according to a sworn affidavit by a police officer.
Malone received two years’ probation in February 2008 after pleading guilty to obstructing governmental operations.
Before the sentencing, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and Crohn’s disease, and termed disabled.
When McClain was not living with his mother, he rotated between Anne Irvin, a relative of Ervin’s, and at least two other Decatur families during his final two years.
Greg and Tammy Hawkins, and Tim and Canitha Thomas all opened their doors to McClain during times he didn’t know where else to turn.
“I don’t know what would have happened had we not all pooled together,” said Canitha Thomas. “It really does take a village to raise a child.”
His father bounced in and out of his life, when McClain was 11, pled guilty to selling cocaine in Madison County, he received three years’ probation.
Money has always been tight for McClain’s parents.
As McClain entered the 11th grade, Malone and her husband at the time declared bankruptcy.
Court documents show that as of November 2008, Ervin owed Malone $35,824 in child-support payments.
Yet, using sports as an outlet, McClain overcame those obstacles.
It took that same focus to navigate his life outside of football.
McClain’s high school coach, Jere Adcock, said he spoke often with his star player, yet Adcock never fully grasped the difficulty of McClain’s personal life.
“He’s one of those kids who would say, ‘I can get through this’ without you knowing very much about what’s going on in his life,” Adcock said in a phone interview.
“His ability to stay focused in times of adversity and in spite of all the things he wrestled with amazes me to this day.”
Working hard is what got McClain this far, according to Adcock and others.
They paint a picture of a young man who spurns TV so that he can watch videotape of football.
McClain was recruited to Alabama by then-coach Dave Shula. He arrived to find Nick Saban the coach after Shula was fired.
During an early meeting, McClain told Saban that he wanted to play right away. Saban said McClain had to learn the defense, and then laughed.
Saban’s laughter turned to astonishment in short order, as McClain quickly turned into the leader of the defense.
Kevin Steele, now Clemson’s defensive coordinator, coached McClain his first two seasons with the Crimson Tide.
He said former NFL standout linebacker Sam Mills is the only other player he has coached who rivals McClain’s intellect and mastery of defense.
Saban calls McClain the smartest player he has ever coached and once referred to him as too much of a perfectionist. Saban oftentimes had to console McClain after he exited the field upset over making a mistake.
“That’s a tremendous asset, as long as you can keep channeling it in the right direction,” Saban said.

Yeah, he’s a milionaire now and all, I’m sure he won’t ask for anyone’s pity, he’s never used his past as an excuse and seems like the type of guy who keeps everything inside to protect himself (not always a good thing, but people shouldn’t be so quick to judge this kid’s carachter.
And so far, as a Raider, he’s continued to work hard, study film and has even sacrificed his body for the team, not everyone is willing to play injured and jeopardize their careers.
He has not been put in the best position to succeed for a variety of reasons….or does anyone think the much-beloved Patrick Willis or anyone else for that matter, could have stepped in as the Raiders MLB in 2010 and 2011 and turned this Defense around?.

I’m thinking McClain had problems with Bresnahan.
May 21st, 2012 at 8:53 pm
Hopefully McClain has learned his lesson and Reggie, DA, that new Life Coach and Napoleon can keep this kid away from Decatur, at least away from some of his “friends”.
It’s not like people who knew him didn’t warn him:
“Bruce Jones, the director of Decatur Youth Services, hasn’t talked to McClain much since he went to Alabama.
In one of their last lengthy conversations before McClain went to Alabama, Jones told McClain he would be a millionaire one day if he would stop jeopardizing his future by acting as a “bouncer-type” on behalf of friends in troublesome situations.
“But that’s Rolando. He’s true to his friends,” Jones said.
“Even now, when he’s here, he’s hanging with his buddies. When you say, ‘You might have to separate yourselves from these guys (to protect his future),’ with Rolando, that’s probably not going to happen. Maybe at some point, but probably not right now.”
Jamie Lee, Decatur’s basketball coach, said he reminded McClain a few weeks ago when he was back in Decatur that many people will want a piece of his success and that he needs guidance.
“I hope he understands that,” Lee said. “His intelligence is going to help him.”
May 21st, 2012 at 8:53 pm
I don’t think he respected Bresnahan.
May 21st, 2012 at 8:56 pm
I don’t think it’s a case of people acting superior to McClain I think theres valid concern after the guy just got convicted for illegal use of a firearm, menacing, etc. etc. and sentenced to 180 days in jail.
To show his remorse he goes to a highschool gym and threatens to “come after” someone he feels has done him wrong. This, not two months ago.
I don’t think it’s “weird” that some people find that to be a bit disconcerting.
May 21st, 2012 at 8:57 pm
“Some people would say he even had an attitude, and some will probably say he has that now,” said Jones, who met McClain around his fifth-grade year.
“But it takes that to be on the level he’s at. It’s not to say he didn’t associate with some of the knuckleheads, because he did. But he was strong-willed enough not to let it pull away from his goals.”
=====================================================
And now that he’s secured a life which allows him to completely disassociate from the ‘knuckleheads’ and focus entirely on his goals – what does Slow do ?
He returns to Decatur and gets shot at. He still doesn’t learn and gets arrested when he could have easily avoided doing so. This after he just settled a case out of court for being a knucklehead.
All the puff pieces detailing the adversity Slow has overcome doesn’t change the fact that Slow has no one to blame but himself for the moronic, irresponsible, and criminal behavior he’s engaged in.

McClain deserves credit for overcoming a lot of adversity and getting to the point where he’s a multi millionaire and was such a success in college. Kudos to him for doing that.
My mother never threatened to kill me. THAT has got to play with your psyche and turn into an emotional basketcase.
That being said, we can’t excuse everybody for crimes just cuz they had a bad childhood. Has he really overcome it all? Judging by his RECENT actions it really doesn’t look like it.
I agree that the Raiders made a big investment here with McClain and need to utilize their resources to see if they can help him. Not just dump him, but McClain needs to man up and start doing the things to get better…on all levels. NOT threatening guys like he did to that guy at the gym. Allegedly I must add.

And this is the problem in a nutshell.
‘Maybe at some point’ ? Are you kidding me ?
Well, that point didn’t come soon enough, did it ?
Now Slow is paying the price.
And so are the Raiders.
There is no legitimate excuse for Slow’s behavior.
There comes a time when you have to move on from your past, show some responsibility and display real character. Be a man and do the right things in life. Show some commitment to the team that’s paying you millions to be a leader and to play well on Sundays.
Stay focused. Stay out of trouble.
Not that much to ask for or expect.
What’s Slow’s excuse for failing to do so ?
Time to stop pampering this fool and waiting for a ‘maybe at some point’ change in his outlook and direction.

I hear what you’r saying. You hear a story like that about the guy and you have to give him credit for what he accomplished in the face of all that.
Let’s assume he gets it together…his private life. I’m concerned about the way he plays…above and beyond his personal issues.
I’m still waiting for him to show us what he can do at the big boy level.
The fact he’s still on the team and that DA is singing his praises as far as counting on him to be the McClain we thought he was gonna be.
THAT encourages me.

what a waste of tax payer dollars, either skip the judge trial and go straight to jury, or don’t allow the defendent to appeal a “meaningless” few months of time which could be spent on other cases backed up several months.
What do you achieve other than allowing govt. employees to collect paychecks.
Rolando is here on borrowed time. dead man walking (in terms of getting cut by the raiders not his sentencing).

Good article Bob Marley. While I do admire McClain for coming up from the get-o, and I REALLY admire him doing it with a parent who has mental health issues. Mental health issues are very serious, as anyone who reads this blog on a daily basis can probably attest.
Bottom line for me tho, is this isn’t Hollywood. It’s Oakland. And Mcclain is not a kid. McClain is a man. A grown man. His play on the field has been suspect, and off the field he’s been atrocious. He might be a system mismatch and better suited to playing behind an Odd front. But he has to get better on all fronts or he won’t be in the league much longer.
May 21st, 2012 at 9:42 pm
“Rolando is here on borrowed time. dead man walking (in terms of getting cut by the raiders not his sentencing).”
That’s what I was thinking as well.
May 21st, 2012 at 9:43 pm
I’m not sure cutting Slow is the correct thing to do right now.
I think there is a very small chance he might have some utility or value in the future.
On the other hand, it might be beneficial to the long term health of the organization to move on from Slow immediately or in the very near future.
I lean towards giving Slow a chance at redemption, but I do not expect any positive results.
I do not think he has the ability or the character to be the impact player the Raids desperately need on defense.
Sometimes it is best to cut your losses and move on.
At this point I’m content to let the legal issues sort themselves out and see if there’s any hope Slow might eventually contribute to the team.
May 21st, 2012 at 9:43 pm
I give him a 50/50 chance at this point.
I haven’t heard of McClain having any behavior problems in Oak. Has he?
He was known as a good student of the game at Ala.
With the team starting from scratch, I expect that he knows he has to play well to stay or make top $ elsewhere.
May 21st, 2012 at 9:48 pm
You can’t make excuses, but you can make considerations.
May 21st, 2012 at 9:49 pm
I’m cool with keeping McClain on the team as long as there’s not a chance he’s going to jail during the season…or getting suspended.
I don’t like that kind of uncertainty in such a key position for this season.
That being said, I hope if someone at camp proves themselves to be a guy who gives us a better chance to win…then play that guy instead of McClain.
Don’t let the big contract decide who plays.
Make McClain earn it.

May 21st, 2012 at 10:17 pm
Ok, 2 points on McClain’s play.
How many players come out of College and face a severe Coaching downgrade (from Saban to Marshall-Bresnahan) while trying to adjust to a new scheme and position?.
Do you guys think somebody else would have been able to come in at MLB in 2010-11 and make a difference?.
Stopping the run was an issue long before McClain got here and it’s up to the new Staff to get better.
By the way, in the 2 games McClain has missed as a Raider, opponents ran for 533 yards (234 vs Jax in 2010 and 299 vs Den in 2011), that’s an average of 266.5 yards.
May 21st, 2012 at 10:29 pm
In fact, since Rolando McClain joined the Raiders in 2010 he’s played 30 games and we have allowed an average of 126 rushing yards.
In the 2 games McClain has missed over the same period, we have allowed an average of 266.5 yards per game.
May 21st, 2012 at 10:35 pm
Marley, 515,
McClain stands in the middle on every snap. The runner and sometimes the receiver come right at him. There is nothing to do but tackle the opponent and/or break up the play.
You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to be an MLB. Just follow the ball and make the play. Why are Marshall-Bresnahan to blame for RoMac’s ineptitude, even though they were both dumb as a sack of rusty hammers, as is RoMac ????
May 21st, 2012 at 10:39 pm
Who lines up next to RoMc in a 3-4? Burris? …with Wheeler and Curry OLBs? Over Seymour, Kelly & ShoNasty.
D line seems solid, bench included. An additional ILB may be necs. Goethel and Stupar may step up.

Well, if it’s that simple, let’s just play the cheapest LB we have in the middle.
It’s not like the Offense designs plays to take out MLB’s with pulling OL and lead-blocking full-backs on running plays, right?.
Besides disengaging from blocks, the MLB needs to understand where everybody is supposed to be, line them up and, if good enough, make adjustments before the snap.
It may not be rocket science, but there’s a reason the Middle Linebacker is called the QB of the Defense.
May 21st, 2012 at 10:52 pm
Hardline,
I haven’t seen anything that from McClain that makes me think he’s gonna be a good MLB.
If it wasn’t for me knowing about all his accomplishments and accolades from college I would’ve thought he was just some guy and I would still be ticked off about the ‘Stafford Whiff’ and the “Buffalo Jog”..you know, the dance crazes that swept the nation.
May 21st, 2012 at 10:55 pm
The one thing that I still have faith in is that Reggie and DA obviously see something in him.
I think they would’ve dumped him by now if they thought he couldn’t help this team win.
So, I havent seen anything personally from McClain that gets me excited, but apparently other people have so let’s see.

What a slap in the face to the REAL hardcore W’s fans that are located in the East Bay.
This says it all that Lacob is trying to cater to the big elite evil corporations and the 1%:
Th real hard core East Bay fans who have night in and night out sold out Oracle after 18 years of consistent should stop showing up next year after this clown Lacon slaps them in the face tomorrow and tells them he wants to go to SF.
Going to SF isn’t going to bring high priced free agents to play with the W’s…being a good consistent winning hoops team is what attracts free agents!

So, 1/3 of the Coliseum City package is leaving, which has to mean it’s 1/3 less likely to happen. Correct me if there’s a more accurate way of looking at it. Now you’re building for 2 sports teams instead of 3. I’m pretty sure a lot of the investors would like 3. I can’t help but to think this will set off a chain of all sports teams leaving Oakland. What can you do? All of the money is in the peninsula now. I’m surprised the Warriors aren’t moving to Silicon Valley. SF might not be the wisest choice, either, because it will eventually crumble like Oakland. SF still has a financial district and an active port but what good is that for the global economy anymore? Tech industry, the good and the bad of it, is America’s export anymore.

534, you’ve no clue how & why the Sonics left town.
Suffice it to say the Howard Schultz, Starbucks mogul, was just one of 56 owners @ the time they were sold to Clayton Bennett, who had no intention of keeping the Sonics in Seattle. The e-mail trail supports that.
Why did David Stern endorse the sale of the Sonics from Barry Ackerley to Schultz & his minions& the other NBA owners sign off on said sale? Aren’t they all businessmen? Who in their right mind would see this as anything but a recipe for disaster? The fact the NBA endorsed Bennett leads one to the conclusion the NBA was tired of dealing with Seattle City Council, which took on the same mindset of San Francisco when it came to public dollars being allocated for soprts structures.
King County reversed failied initiatives for construction of Safeco Field (Mariners) & Century Link Field (Seahawks) (both voted down by state legislators).
The Seattle City Center lobby wouldn’t hear of loosing Key Arena (Barry Ackerley had initially purchased the property Safeco Field resides on with the long term goal of building, with the help of public funding, an arena for basketball & hockey)& the accompanying revenue.
So Ackerley sold out to Schultz & his anemic group, which was just a band aid.
If Stern was such a good businessman why would he have endorsed such a move? If the other NBA owners were such successful businessmen why would they have rubber stamped it? They had to be pining for an eventual movement to a different location. . .now, with Sacramento &, again, New Orleans, two much smaller markets (as is OKC) than Seattle displaying signs (NOLA is operated by the league)of needing better arenas/ownership groups, the league is attempting to stave off such movement. Why? What did they have against Seattle? Stern went so far as to contend Seattle didn’t deserve the Sonics! So, 534, SEattle didn’t loose the Sonics. They were taken away! And David Stern was just as responsible as anyone else. . .he has spent more time & energy & been much more diplomatic in dealing with Sac (the state capital & in Cali) & New Orleans (doesn’t want the bad tasre of Katrina & it’s aftermath on his hands. Otherwise OKC would now be the Hornets). . .So just ponder when the Lakers will be relevant again & keep your less than informed opinions to yourself!

I seem to recall you being one of the longtime users who had to change names when things got crazy, but I maybe wrong.

Marley,
It’s funny you mention a “handle”. No I don’t post under another handle. I logged in just to bounce ideas and thoughts on my favorite football team since practically birth. I chose Guest123 on a lark I would probably only post a couple of times. It’s a weak name, I recognize. I really don’t want or care for a “handle” or a blog personality. With me, what you see is what you get.
I always have stopped and read any comment by “Bob Marley” because I like the way you put so much thought and analysis into your posts. So many trolls who clutter up this place.
I read your opinions on Rolando McClain and I respect them, but remain unconvinced that he’s salvageable. Not because I am holier than thou, but there are so many factors that go against him.
May 22nd, 2012 at 5:44 am
Guest123 is a pretty lame “handle”. But then I’m old skool and don’t pretend to be up on things in this generation. I really meant to be anonymous the whole time. My bad.

I’d like to think that one of Reggie’s first actions as GM must have been a sit-down with McClain, get to know the guy and have him explain what happened and just get a feel for the kid, see if he needed to get rid of him or if he was a guy worth keeping.
There’s no way Reggie and the team didn’t know what was coming, maybe they didn’t expect 55 to be found guilty on all charges, but they knew he’d have to answer for his actions.
My guess is he acted according to what he learned from McClain when he arrived and decided he wanted him as his MLB for next season.

Did some numbers last night.
Since Rolando McClain joined the Raiders in 2010 he’s played 30 games and in those games we have allowed an average of 126 rushing yards and 4.5 per carry.
In the 2 games McClain has missed over the same period, we have allowed an average of 266.5 rushing yards per game and 7.2 per carry.
Needless to say we lost both games McClain missed, Jax in 2010 and Denver in 2011, so we’re 16-14 with McClain and 0-2 without him.

May 22nd, 2012 at 6:25 am
Here’s what Seattle is getting. A chronically weak kneed prima dona TE that always complains about not getting at least 10 targets and won’t practice on Wednedays. He won’t block for anyone and taps his helmet after every play to go get a squirt of gatorade. He’s not a complementary player and is a headcase who won’t agree to being 2nd fiddle as a receiver, much less 2nd fiddle as a TE.
And couple that with Seattle giving $34M with $17M gtd to Zach Miller and owe another $13M to a washed up Winslow. Both of those guys will be out of the league by next year.

nobody said those guys were BETTER than McClain and if the team lacks depth, thats a coaching problem imo

Goethel gets all kinds of credit for being some kind of stud in here, a lot of times by the same guys who want to trade McFadden because he can’t stay healthy, or wanted to cut Chaz Schilens for being injured. Goethel hasn’t even made it through a preseason yet.

I think that’s a fair point to make. I really don’t feel comfortable that our starting middle linebacker is even on the team as of now, (assuming McClain is suspended/jailbound). I made mention of Stupar’s draft status and it’s not a whole lot different than a UDFA. Goethel has proven to be brittle, and Curry is just not the right man for the job. Burris would be a nice surprise if he can outright take the job, but he’s another rookie so it’s best to temper enthusiasm. I think Reggie has to scour the vet LB free agent market to find a decent stopgap.
May 22nd, 2012 at 6:48 am
That being said, I like what I’ve read from Stupar, I’m pulling for him.
And hopefully Goethel can stay healthy and show more than he did during the 8 games he was active in 2010 because I don’t recall him having an impact as a rookie.
May 22nd, 2012 at 6:54 am
I have a feeling Stupar will be a force this year. I forgot where I read it, but they went from saying that linebacker was our weakest position to possibly a position of strength! Stupar, Burris, and Goethal I am pulling for! Oh, and Curry!

May 22nd, 2012 at 6:56 am
We all are rooting for oft-injured training camp stars to have good healthy regular seasons. And we all would love to have a 7th rounder or UDFA to have a significant impact. It does happen from time to time, but hardly ever when forced.
I’ve said it before and I’ll stick to my opinion that the 2012 draft (for where we drafted) was mostly depth and no immediate full time starters. I’ll amend that by saying that I can see Criner having an impact.
We have a gaping hole at middle LB, and we need to address it soon. It’s a bit much to expect the late round draft picks and UDFA’s to make an impact from jump street. It’s nice to be optimistic and all, but let’s keep some reality and focus.

No we don’t, McClain Pro Bowl in 2012!.
Just kidding, but I do think RoMac has a good chance to fluorish as a player under DA, Tarver and Holland coaching, as far as McClain’s life, he called Nick Saban a father figure in College, maybe McKenzie or one of the coaches takes him under his wing and becomes the sort of calming influence Saban once was for him.
But that last part is just hope and speculation on my part, dude needs to grow up and leave his past behind.

Marley,
Agreed. For now, I think it’s fair to say that we should be concerned with this situation because McClain’s plight is in flux and he nor the Raiders are in control of how this all plays out. It may be conservative, but I think it’s better to think a couple of steps ahead than react on the fly. That’s why I think Reggie has to assume RoMac is lost indefinitely and prepare for the worst. If RoMac is cleared and does play, the depth won’t be wasted either way.

BCZ,
guilty as charged. I was predicting Goethel would be a beast the past two offseasons, but injuries have derailed any progress he’s made since we drafted him. I liked him, coming out of Arizona. I think he’s the only downhill player we’ve got at LB, basing this off of his college tape. But then again, most of us thought McClain would be a force in the NFL, too. I never wanted McFadden or Schilens cut. Don’t want Travis cut either. As you’ve pointed out, I don’t think we’ll know what we have in TG until he can make it through OTA’s, camp, preseason and half a dozen reg season games [healthy]
May 22nd, 2012 at 7:14 am
I may be the minority here, but I don’t give a rip about McClain’s personal life, his friends, his family or his hobbies. I don’t care what it was like growing up for him. I don’t care what he did in college, either. I don’t care what his college coach thinks about him. I don’t care what Al Davis, Tom Cable or Hue Jackson thought about him. I don’t care what John Marshall, Chuck Bresnahan, Mike Haluchak or Greg Biekert thought about him.
check that crap at the door imo (no offense!)
I care if he’s producing or not on the football field. I care what McKenzie, Allen, Tarver & Holland think about him, because those are the guys he has to impress this year.

My point was that with McClain out of the lineup we lost both games and gave up 140 more rushing yards per game and almost 3 more yards per carry.
That’s it, it’s just a fact.
And do you or any other “blogger” really think that if you had replaced McClain with any other 1st round LB or starter in the League over the last 2 years, we would have suddenly been able to stuff the run on a consistent basis?.
McClain was put in a bad spot by inferior coaching, let’s see what he can do with a better staff.
By the way, Goethel has played his share of snaps, he played in 8 games as a rookie and didn’t stand out, maybe he played sparingly, but he was healthy and saw action, I’d agree that’s not enough to say he can or can’t play, just saying he has seen the field.

McClain didn’t make us better against the run or pass since we drafted him. He’s not a leader, he’s not a playmaker. RRS,
I’ll be glad with EJ Henderson or Brooking. But really I trust the Raiders scouts to find the right vet to stand in for RoMac as the defacto starter. If they could bring in a LB now, it would be a nice shot in the arm to the defense and some valuable time to get used to Tarver’s scheme. We can’t count on RoMac, so we need somebody. I don’t really have a favorite, but I defer to Reggie’s scouting dept.

In footage from the Broncos’ organized team activities, Manning appeared to be throwing and running well and showing no ill-effects from the multiple neck procedures he had last year, forcing him to miss the entire 2011 season. We won’t see how well Manning can take a hit until the preseason begins, but we have seen that Manning can take a snap, drop back and pass looking more or less the way he has always looked. -PFT

“out of the league” isn’t quite the same as placed on I.R.
was ShoNasty out of the league last season??
*****************
I stand corrected, BUT he did not play a single game for them last year, so I don’t think we should say they like 2 TE’s because of Miller and Carlson when the 2 didn’t play a game together.

I can answer that one…on game day, I always send out texts to B, DMAC and let them know where I’m at. Dirt Lot calls me when he’s ready! There is always (at least in my area) tri-tip, steak, chicken, sausage, and drinks and good music! We all meet up and have a good time! Like I said, you ever make it down, give us a holler!

I don’t really have a favorite, but I defer to Reggie’s scouting dept.

I agree with you that the time to bring in fresh blood is NOW, not after we catch word of the trial date or outcome. By then it’ll be too late to adapt to the Allen/Tarver defense and we’ll be stuck with Goethel & Stupar and hoping for a pleasant surprise.

***
fair enough, bcz. that was an assumption on my part because ZMiller was acquired before Carlson got hurt
the intention there was to have a dynamic TE duo, it just didn’t work out that way … so they’ll try again this year
Still think they could have gotten a guy to match Winslow Jr’s production in 2012 for MUCH less money and a few less headaches. But I don’t own a crystal ball, so it’s just a projection.
May 22nd, 2012 at 7:56 am
If you really care what the GM and HC thought of 55, I would think there wouldn’t be as much negative propaganda coming from you.
It’s pretty obvious the HC and GM think the guy is an asset. You just refuse to accept it.
E J Henderson and Brookings could have BEEN signed for the vet minimum. If they were anywhere near the player 55 is, you really think the GM and HC wouldn’t have brought them in a long time ago?

true, Mark
I think the Heat were hoping they could get a lift off the bench from guys like Shane Battier, Mike Miller & Udonis Haslem. with Chris Bosh out, somebody needs to step it up!
Wade & James have to combine for 70 points a game to even compete in games?
Haslem showed up with 8 points in the 4th qtr of the last against against Indy. that was huge. hoping we might see more of that. Chalmers has a good game once in a while, too
