Wiz played rookie season with torn labrum
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, June 6th, 2012 at 3:47 pm in Oakland Raiders.
An impressive rookie season guard-turned-center Stefen Wisniewski has gotten even more impressive considering the circumstances.
Although Wisniewski played every game and didn’t turn up on an injury report for a shoulder injury, it turns out he was playing with a torn labrum incurred during training camp.
It’s all a bit mysterious, with Wisniewski a willing contributor. Asked which shoulder was injured, Wisniewski said, “I’ll leave it up to your imagination.’’
Following the season, Wisniewski had what coach Dennis Allen termed a “procedure,’’ although the surgery was major enough that he won’t line up at center and get any action until the Raiders report for training camp in Napa on July 29.
“It’s getting a little boring just standing around and watching,’’ Wisniewski said. “I’m getting a lot of mental reps, but I’ve got to get healthy first. It looks like I’ll be more than good to go by camp.’’
Wisniewski was originally drafted to play center, with the Raiders opting to move him to left guard in order to get Samson Satele on the field. He started at center in place of Satele in a Thursday night win over San Diego, and is looking forward to the position switch.
“It’s nice to kind of be the boss of the O-line in there, making calls,’’ Wisniewski said. “You get to be in charge, which is nice. It’s a good position. You’ve got to be athletic, you’ve got to be smart, you’ve got to be tough. I like it a lot.’’
Wisniewski feels the switch to a zone blocking system fits in with the skill set of the linemen.
“You’ve got to be able to move,’’ Wisniewski said. “If you look at our O-line, that’s one thing we can do across the board. We can move, we can run, we’re athletic. I think it’s going to work for us, especially with the speed we’ve got at running back.’’

True Raider indeed. The guy had a couple of games last year where he got criticized for his play and still didn’t say anything. Stud. I’m starting to think that this will be the first time in 10 years that the players actually care us much as we do about winning. Too bad AL won’t be there see it.

I think with the passing of Al Davis this past October it is time for the Raiders to establish a “Raiders Hall of Fame”. Mark Davis needs to build a shrine for all to see. The history of Al Davis’ teams can never be forgotten. Once it is built and established….I would require all Raider Rookies to take a day to soak it all in before they even put on or wear the Silver and Black.

Oakland Raiders cornerback Demarcus Van Dyke at 2011 training camp (photo by Levi Damien)
Oh how the Raiders secondary has changed since last we saw it. The Raiders defense was horrendous last season and the giving up yards in big chunks became expected. In fact, the Raiders season was ended by a 99 yard drive that had just four plays. The secondary needed a set of jumper cables.
Returning to the team, of course, the two rookies the team selected in the 2011 draft, DeMarcus Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa. Joining them is reserve corner and kick returner Bryan McCann. And brought back for another shot is practice squad player, Terrail Lambert.
Gone are the two starters to begin last season; Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson. They were both overpaid and were sent packing.
Reggie McKenzie and his new head coach Dennis Allen (a fomer defensive backs coach) decided their best bet was to rebuild this unit through free agency. McKenzie grabbed a couple familiar faces in former Packers Brandon Underwood and Pat Lee. Then the team set out to get a couple of proven starters in Ron Bartell and Shawntae Spencer.
The team didn’t choose a cornerback in the draft, however. Which means either they are satisfied with the group they have or they just didn’t see anyone they especially liked. They signed two undrafted free agent corners Conroy Black and Chaz Powell.
Here is what the Raiders cornerbacks look like as they head into mini camps:
1. Ron Bartell- Was out all of last season with what was feared to be a career-ending neck injury. Prior to his neck injury, he was a solid NFL starting corner. Team doctors cleared him and he was signed to a one-year deal.
2. Shawntae Spencer- Started for the 49ers for many seasons but suffered a hamstring injury in the 2011 preseason. He was replaced by the newly signed Carlos Rogers who played at a Pro Bowl level and ended Spencer’s career in San Francisco. The Raiders get a starting caliber corner in Spencer.
3. Chimdi Chekwa- Showed a lot of promise before being lost for the 2011 season with a hamstring injury.
4. DeMarcus Van Dyke- Started a few games last season for the Raiders and played quite well at times.
5. Brandon Underwood- He has some talent. It is mainly his off-field problems that are the concern. Reggie McKenzie seemed to think he was worth a shot and he knew him very well in Green Bay. Underwood can also play free safety if the Raiders asked him to.
6. Bryan McCann- World class speed makes up for some of his faults. He is primarily a kick return specialist but can also contribute in nickel and dime packages.
7. Pat Lee- A former second round pick by the Packers. The Raiders are hoping a new system and coaching staff can bring out the potential he once showed coming out of college.
8. Terrail Lambert- A journeyman practice squad guy who has spent time with the Dolphins, Cowboys, and Saints prior to being signed to the Raiders practice squad midway through last season.
9. *Conroy Black- Speaking of speed, he ran a 4.31 40-yard dash which was among the fastest at the 2012 combine. That kind of speed would have had draftniks predicting the Raiders to take him with a midround pick. They got the speed guy, but they got him as an undrafted free agent.
10. *Chaz Powell- And intriguing prospect as a two way player for Penn State. He played both wide receiver and corner. He was a wide receiver first and switched to cornerback as a senior. He still has the body of a wide receiver but with a little time in camp and on the practice squad, he may just develop into a good cornerback. Worth taking that chance.
*The Raiders have not officially announced any undrafted free agent signings.

Returning players are thrilled with a system as installed by coach Dennis Allen and coordinator Jason Tarver that deviates from the standard 4-3 defense with minimal blitzing and backed by a man-to-man defense favored by late owner Al Davis since the club returned to Oakland in 1995.

Frye, Edwards & Boller set the world on fire in camp & OTA’s too. then when the actual games rolled around, they looked lost & scared. Didn’t know what the heck they were doing. @RRS,
sounds like a contradiction in terms. Don’t underestimate the egghead clipholders who aren’t confused with the multiple shifts the defenses throw at them. Pryor needs to be coached up “egghead” style. Football at this level isn’t won with pure instincts and athletic ability. If Pryor isn’t reading the field properly, you can bet the defense will adjust and force him into a corner they want him to run into. It would be a trap at that point.
This game is chess not checkers….

Preparation wise and knowledge of the game, Pryor isn’t where Campbell is. But we know what Campbell is and what his limitations are. It was night and day when Carson Palmer arrived. Pryor at least has a potential ceiling that Campbell will never have. Campbell has already seen his ceiling. He’s an ordinary journeyman backup QB and will only go downhill from here. He had his run. Last we say of TP he was having trouble taking snaps before a game, and then came in for 1 play all year….and there was a penalty….not exactly enough to start comparing him to Campbell, a guy who has started a ton of NFL games.

I’m not making any comparison between T.P. and J.C. Only commenting on a mediocre QB who used the excuses of never having the same system over the course of his career. the Bears were smart this offseason. Bush & Campbell are certainly upgrades to Barber & Hanie.
weren’t the Bears 7-3 at one point last season and then finished 8-8 when they lost Cutler & Forte to injury?
they needed better depth [like we do!]
if the Raiders lose Palmer & McFadden to injury, nobody is predicting Leinart & Goodson to take us to the playoffs.
they dumped Mike Martz and promoted Mike Tice. then got Cutler his old QB Coach back [Jeremy Bates] and even got him a #1 WR [Brandon Marshall]
Bears might win that division this year – wouldn’t surprise me. sorry bsj

Patriots cut Markell Carter
Carter (OLB/DE) was named the Patriots’ practice squad player of the week seven times last season and the team chose to give him a raise from $149,000 to $306,000 in order to keep him from joining another team last season.
Anyone?

tough question, O. Even though it was technically your opinion and not a question, LOL [I'm in Podunk, leave me alone]
Some might say we gave up on Andrew Walter too quickly. 3rd rounder in 2005 was behind Kerry Collins during his rookie season. 2006 was behind Aaron Brooks, then came in to start 8 games during the Shell/Walsh year and got clobbered behind the worst O-Line ever in the bed & breakfast offense and Moss gater arming his passes across the middle, while Porter sits in the coaches doghouse.
2007 here comes McCown & Culpepper. Russell drafted 1st overall. Guy had 3 different HC’s in 4 years with the Raiders. He was a beast at Arizona State

Athletics designated 1B-DH Kila Ka’aihue for assignment.
It was originally speculated that Ka’aihue would be placed on paternity leave, as his wife is scheduled to deliver twins soon, but obviously that’s not the case. He’s been replaced on the roster and at first base by Brandon Moss. Ka’aihue figures to report to Triple-A Sacramento if he clears waivers.

Old news, but I’m glad Dez is back. I predict a break out year in his limited action.
Raiders re-signed restricted free agent DL Desmond Bryant to a one-year, $1.927 million contract.
He’ll be eligible for 2013 unrestricted free agency, at which point Bryant could be a sneaky big-ticket target for 3-4 teams. At 6-foot-5, 290, Bryant has developed into a disruptive defensive lineman capable of playing both tackle and end. He’ll be a swing player behind Richard Seymour and Tommy Kelly this year.

No one knows what happened in the Zimmerman case its all speculation and its feed by the media.
I for one will not sheepishly follow the media on this or any other case. Its so narrow minded to sit here and discuss the “supposed” facts about the case based on what was written by some journalist with a hidden agenda.
I do however firmly believe that the media wants to make it racial to get the hits or people all worked up about it when in fact Zimmerman is Mexican not white.
That simple fact alone shows me that what they are writing about this case is about as non factual and untrustworthy as anyone can be.

Raiders clarify, maintain first-round pick in ‘13 draft (Paul G)
ALAMEDA — Turns out the Raiders have a first-round draft pick next year after all. Even if they play in a conference title game this coming season.
Despite numerous reports that had Oakland giving up its first-rounder in 2013 to Cincinnati if the Raiders advanced to the AFC championship game following either the 2011 season or the 2012 season in exchange for quarterback Carson Palmer, the Raiders clarified Wednesday that “the condition was based on our performance during the 2011 season. The draft choice we’re…guaranteed to give up in 2013 is our second-round pick.”
In the Oct. 18, 2011 trade orchestrated by former coach Hue Jackson and okayed by owner Mark Davis 10 days after the death of Al Davis, the Raiders gave the Bengals their 2012 first-round pick and a conditional pick — either the first- or second-rounder in 2013 — for Palmer.
But as the Raiders now say, the condition was it would be a first-rounder in 2013 only if the Raiders played in last season’s AFC title game. That obviously did not happen as the Raiders went 8-8 and missed the playoffs, so Oakland, which did not make a pick in this past April’s draft until the end of the third round, No. 95 overall, will be back in the first round next April.

Wheeler sings McClain’s praises
ALAMEDA — Rolando McClain continues to be on the receiving end of high praise from his teammates for his on-field acumen.
Even as the middle linebacker’s future in Oakland is murky in the wake of his being convicted last month of third-degree assault, menacing, discharging a handgun in city limits and reckless endangerment and his 180-day sentence under appeal.
“Rolando, man, he’s the biggest linebacker that can move as fast as he can,” new Raiders strongside linebacker Philip Wheeler said following Wednesday’s OTA practice. “I’ve never seen anybody that big, that can run that fast and move how he moves. He moves almost like me and he’s like maybe 20 pounds heavier than me, I don’t know.
“He’s amazing, man. I’m looking forward to seeing him on the film after the game, watching him play, too.”
Listed at 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds, Wheeler signed with the Raiders as a free agent on March 30 after four years in Indianapolis. He also praised McClain for his work in the film room, even if McClain’s on-field play has been spotty in his first two NFL seasons.
Scheme? Injury? One thing that has never been questioned, though, is McClain’s film work.
“Yeah, man,” Wheeler said. “Once we put a defense in, he has it. I don’t know how he does it. He catches on very quickly. He helps us out on the field and I think he’s growing, man….I think he’s growing a lot.”
And according to Wheeler, McClain’s off-field issues have not had a negative effect on him thus far in the offseason. Of course, McClain missed the first week of OTA’s as he was back in Alabama preparing for his court case.
“Once he’s on the field, it’s like it’s his sanctuary, some people say that,” Wheeler said. “And I think that’s how it applies to him. I think he just blocks everything out and plays football and it’s working for him.”
At least, until he either goes to a jury trial and/or NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issues a suspension.

Your house gets burglarized out here and the police won’t show up 6 hours later.
If your car gets broken into or vandalized they don’t even show up. They just have you fill out a incident form that is sent througt the mail and sent it back to them.

I live in Oregon, and am a HUGE Ducks fan. OL’ Boy Criner was terroizing the Ducks the whole time he was in AZ. I hated that guy…….NOW, when I heard we drafted him, that very second I was thrilled. I said, WE GOT A BOLLA NOW….Watch out. This kid is gonna make a bigger splash than D.Mo made and will be mentioned in years to come with names like Ward, Wayne, Fitz……He WILL be our #1 reciever one day; the guy we hoped Schilens would be and never was, but BETTER.

He moves almost like me and he’s like maybe 20 pounds heavier than me, I don’t know.
“He’s amazing, man. I’m looking forward to seeing him on the film after the game, watching him play, too.”

even with a CCL, can’t carry in a bank or school or places where it’s posted that firearms are prohibited. Also – if somebody asks you to put it away because it makes them feel uncomfortable, you must abide. (example: owner or manager of a store/restaurant, etc)

STrippers are required to get a Sherrifs card, but it is just a racket to get them to pay $75 a year and check for warrants.

The worst part about going to Vegas with your wife, is all the eye candy that the wife will catch you staring at.
So I combated this, by throwing some curveballs and just ignoring the wife and staring down some 60 year old guy sometimes. The wife would think she had you caught red-headed, and than you make up some story why you were checking him out and than you aren’t just staring at titties all weekend in her eyes.

But in all seriousness, I lived in Vegas 7 years, and was married for 2 of them, and those may have been my best two years I lived there. Was always ACTUALLY doing something, going to fights, shows, cool dinners, events, as opposed to just going down to the strip and doing nothing and so you gamble and drink……and you know how that ends.
The living with a stripper part makes for good memories and stories, but it generally sucked half the time.

Jamarcus came preloaded with all the expectations of being a #1 overall pick. The microscope was heavy on him from the start. His weight didn’t help matters much. Perception becomes reality with enough media coverage. Pryor has his own posse of media following him as a high supplemental pick that has all the recipe ingredients of an “AL DAVIS SPECIAL”. But when camp starts up and CP3 is lighting up the scoreboard in preseason and early regular season, the backstory of TP will fade.

I don’t like that idea, because it really puts US in a pickle as to do what to do with this contract.
If he hasn’t played at all, and than we start him in his contract year, than we have to base his next contract on one single year.
What if he only starts 7 games and plays really well? We could end up getting Kevin Kolb at $50 million type overreaction. NO THANKS!!!
Also, on the flip side, if he struggles, what are we going to do, re-sign him for a few years? We probably just let him go, and who knows he can then go turn it around.
You can’t draft a guy in the 3rd round, and let him sit around for 3 years and then decide what to do with him.
He needs to get in some series, THIS SEASON, IMO. Even if it is blowout, garbage time duty.

thats exactly how the Favre/Rodgers transition went down. They gave Rodgers a contract extension as soon as he was named the starter at QB though, they didn’t wait until after the season. I don’t see why we couldn’t do the same with Terrelle. Give him modest starter pay in July or August before the 2014 season starts.

It just goes to show that nobody can measure the will, intesity or heart of a player to reach their physical potential that is presented on display at the draft. Everyone has a sparkling youtube video and cherry picked plays, combine numbers, 40 times, etc.

I was talking to my daughter about why people fail. Most think it’s because they are dumb. But I say it’s cause they are lazy. It brings Jamarcus to mind. He was too cool for school, and followed the lead of lazy minds who don’t amount to anything. Lazy trumps dumb 7 days a week and twice on Sunday.

Its the Raiders fault for not helping, its the medias fault for putting too much pressure on him… blah blah blah. Its no ones fault but his own. He chose to be lazy. He chose not to work hard to perfect his craft. No excuses. No ones fault but his own.

Depends on Palmer. If he plays at a high level this year, how do you justify putting Pryor in? Palmer is only 32, he “could” be our QB for the next 7-8 years. His play will go a long way in dictating pryor’s future.

I hope Pryor gets one unexpected chance, and that he throws for 275 yards and a TD and runs for 80 yards and a TD in a come back win!
Then we can swindle some sucker team out of some high draft picks!

My bro lives in CA and I’ve not seen him in years either. Works hard, sucessfull and all that. But spent all his time being “THE MAN” and never taught his boys to become men. I feel sorry for the boys. Lazy, typical Americans. Expecting a handout and hall pass for failure.

The Raiders were known for beating to their own drum when Al Davis was alive and some things haven’t changed even after his death.
While the rest of the league has been busy signing up their draft picks, the Raiders spent their time elsewhere. Their attention has finally turned to the draftees. The Raiders announced Thursday that they have signed defensive end Jack Crawford, defensive tackle Christo Bilukidi and linebacker Nathan Stupar, leaving them three more picks to sign.

Financial terms of the contracts were not disclosed. As the 158th overall pick in the draft, Crawford’s signing bonus is projected to be $182,424. Bilukidi was selected with the 189th overall pick and is expected to receive a bonus of $103,864, while Stupar’s signing bonus is expected to be worth $50,352 as the 230th overall pick.

Seattle signed him as an unrestricted free agent, they will owe the Packers no picks. The NFL might award GB with a supplemental pick, but they do not take that pick away from Seattle, they just add a pick on the end of a round.

3/18/2012: Signed a three-year, $19.5 million contract. The deal contains $10 million guaranteed — a $6 million signing bonus, Flynn’s 2012 base salary, and $2 million of his second-year salary. Another $5 million is available through escalators. An additional $2 million worth of incentives is available, but is “unlikely to be earned.” 2012: $2 million, 2013: $5.25 million, 2014: $6.25 million, 2015: Free Agent
Matt Flynn has to compete with T-Jax for the starting QB job in Seattle!

No, the 1950s were NOT a better time.
Women were considered second-class citizens.
In the south, blacks were functionally prevented from voting.
Divorce was almost unheard of, so if your spouse ended up being abusive or unpleasant, it sucked to be you.
In small towns, 10% of your paycheck was automatically deducted for the local church, whether you wanted it or not.
So many medical procedures didn’t exist. Cataracts meant you’d go blind. Heart valve trouble was a death sentence. The only treatment for lung cancer was an iron lung; keep in mind that Mike “60 Minutes” Wallace starred in advertisements encouraging Americans to smoke and implying that the health warnings were a commie plot.
Speaking of commie plots, McCarthyism was in full swing. If you were accused of being a communist for any reason (including an enemy with an ax to grind), your career and reputation were destroyed forever.
I could go on, but you get the point. Thank goodness the 1950s are over, NEVER to return.

============================================
Chronic diseases (such as cancer and heart disease) have been on the rise for a good century now, but it’s not because cancer itself is getting more prevalent. It’s because you’re much more likely now to live to the age where you get cancer. Remember that cancer is mostly an old person’s disease; yes, I know that young people get it too (a former HS school classmate of mine became the youngest person in medical history to die of prostate cancer, and another classmate died of colon cancer in his mid-20s) but the vast majority of cancer victims are seniors. In previous decades and centuries, most of these seniors would have died long before they got cancer from farming accidents, malnutrition, exposure, wild animal attacks, diseases such as rubella or tuberculosis, tetanus infections and so forth. When the average life expectancy is 40, you’re not going to have a lot of heart attack victims.

Wait, we didn’t give up 2 seconds for palmer? The trade was our 2012 1st rounder and 2013 2nd (which becomes a first if we make the championship game), where is dude coming up with the other second rounder…

I don’t believe the price was a 1st & 2nd in 2012 & a 1st or 2nd in 2013 based on making it to the playoffs in 2012 only. The cost was a 2012 1st and a 2013 1st OR 2nd based on making the 2012 playoffs.
****************
The conditional 2013 first rounder for Carson Palmer was based on the condition of us reaching the AFC Championship game in EITHER 2011 or 2012 with CP3. Unless we get to the championship game then it will be a 2nd rounder. IF we get the AFC Championship this year, I believe that it was 100% worth it.
—————-
It has been cleared up that it was only going to be a 1st rounder in 2013 if we made chamionship game last year. It doesn’t matter what we do this year, It won’t effect what pick it is.
June 7th, 2012 at 1:52 pm
we should sign ocho without a doubt.. carson palmer and ocho could do somethin special.. and if nothin else, he will free up space for dmoore, dhb, criner, ausberry, and even dmac and reece.. thats a loaded offense right there!!!!!
June 7th, 2012 at 1:54 pm
We got a bargain and now have an elite QB who can get us to the SB. This is one deal that HuJack got right.
=======================================
Palmer for a lst and a 2nd was clearly a bargain. He stepped in and played well for us, and he has shown a LOT of leadership. That is something that has been SORELY lacking from the Q position for about a decade.

The trade was Palmer for our 1st rounder in the 2012 draft and a 2nd rounder in the 2013 draft that could become a 1st rounder had we made it to the AFC West tile game LAST SEASON, which did not happen so it is locked in 1st rounder 2012 and 2nd rounder in 2013.

America was the greatest country in the world. Back in the 50’s, our grandfathers worked damn hard to provide for the family, they didn’t have delusions of grandure, they just put food on the table and god willing, had a nice pension. Our grandmothers stayed home and raised the kids (for the most part). I am not being mysogenistic in saying the women belong at home, just saying our country was a much greater place when PARENTS did the parenting. Our government wasnt so damn corrupt (maybe they were, it just wasnt blatantly obvious). People werent coddled, excuses werent tolerated. Hell if you messed up in school you caught an asswhoopin. If you messed up outside your neighbors would kick your as$ before they sent you home to your parents for another as$ kicking. Better times…

JB,
Right. It was JUST the 1st rounder in 2012 and either 1st or 2nd in 2013 depending if we made AFC title game in 2012 season. Now that the smoke has cleared it ends up being ONE 1st and ONE 2nd. Even better…
Compare that to Cutler deal?
I don’t agree but i’ll begrudgingly even go ahead and give that Cutler is better if people want, but even IF Cutler were better it sure as heck is not by a wide margin. Again, I don’t think he is better.

J,
Plax brings the red-zone target we don’t really have (or is unseen to date). We have sucked in the red-zone and mildly got better when Schilens was healthy, now he is gone.
June 7th, 2012 at 2:26 pm

I don’t think Louis Murphy is going to stick this year. He’ll either be traded or cut. The competition within our WR group this year is going to be ferocious. Murphy was a willing participant on special teams last year, even running down on kickoff coverage.
Not sure how you can say he lost his edge, then he is off covering punts and kickoffs and slamming into people more so than he would as a WR.

While this is true, Cutler has shown a bad propensity for mailing it in when things get tough. Want proof? I think Murphy had a case of the D-macs last year where he didn’t want to play for Jackson.

Seymour Bush, where did you get that idea?
============================================
Darren McFadden ran one play, went into the locker room, RAN out of the locker room fully padded with his hat in his hand lloking to come back in and then did not see the field for the next 3 months. Broken bones heal in almost half that time. Something was wrong there. And Murphy’s effort seemed eerily similar.

When I say he lost his edge, I’m more referring to his “Swagger” his confidence. He got in his own head. He even said he wondered if he could even play this game anymore, which tells you he doubts himself. Still like the kid though.
******************************
I can agree with that.
I will add that I think Murphy thought he might be a superstar after his rookie year, and after a few years now I think he realizes he is a #3 WR and not headed for any superstardom, and his play was effected.
I think he will get it back though, and I think he will be productive next year. I have more confidence in him than Jacoby.
============================================
You know, I hope he does get it back. He had me when he caught that blown coverage bomb from Jawalrus, late in the game against SD in the opener, and I pulled for that guy so bad. I wanted him to be great too. He’s a physical kid who plays with alot of emotion and I have to agree that he could outshine Ford as a reciever. I mean, to me Jacoby only really had one Awesome game, and that was against KC. His KR skills are un-matched on the team, but as a reciever, he leaves a bunch to be desired.

They didn’t want to play for someone. Believe me, the one real joy they get is playing in the games. It sucks to work so hard and not play. It’s like rehearsing in a band for a year and then in once the gig arrives someone else shows up and plays to the crowd. That would suck.

“With a young and talented core of receivers Oakland is set to open up its passing game but first they’ll have to solidify a roster thats…”
WIDE OPEN
06-07-12 1:10 am pac
Not since the heady days of Tim Brown and Jerry Rice have the Raiders had so much talent at the receiving position or, more precisely, potential talent.
With Carson Palmer the best QB since the heady days of perennial Pro Bowl and League MVP Rich Gannon, Oakland is at least poised to compete in a Division that has the potential to post three 4,000 yd passers and that is due in part to the Raiders apparent depth at the WR corps.
Darrius Heyward Bey 6-2, 210 lbs
Bey has yet to live up to his lofty draft status (if its any consolation, neither has his draft nemesis Michael Crabtree) but quietly put together a very solid season in 2011.
If the hard working speedster can start to consistently catch some of those deep strikes he was drafted for, the surprise emergence of his short yards, move the chains, possession game could make some of his detractors do an about face.
Bey’s recent DUI is an annoyance and its hoped not an indicator that his work ethic has slipped.
The new regime will likely be less tolerant of the pre season mystery illnesses and “toothaches” hes suffered in the past.
Is 2012 a defining year for Bey? As an X Wide Receiver, yes. Yes it is.
Denarius Moore 6-0, 195 lbs
After a spectacular rookie season were he emerged as Oaklands true deep threat, Moore is poised to show last year was no fluke. Excellent patterns, veteran instincts and great hands mean good news for Bey and other Raider Wide Outs when Defenses begin to roll coverage his way.
Moore is injured right now with a hamstring. Team doctors have decided should rest.
Jacoby Ford 5-9, 185 lbs
Bizarrely, some advocated trading the Clemson track star this off season which just goes to show how short peoples attention spans can be and how some don’t-know-what-they-don’t-know.
Ford has amazing hands and an ability to track and attack the ball in flight not seen in Silver and Black since the Legendary Fred Biletnikoff.
Add his tenacious will and exceptional kick return ability and Ford gives Oakland alot of bang for its buck.
Louis Murphy 6-2, 200 lbs
Murphy’s game is all mental. He has the skills and tenacity to excel as a possession receiver and contributes as a down field blocker but after taking some NFL sized hits and suffering injury hes yet to recover his former Florida Gator swagger.
He knows hes got a lot to prove and some serious competition. He hears the talk and has an attitude about it.
Good for him.
Hes got the skills. He just needs to own it and catch every pass like its his last. Because if he doesn’t go all out and with all of this depth, soon enough, it will be.
Juron Criner 6-3, 221 lbs
Doing nothing in camp but making breathtaking catch after catch.
Taking full advantage of the extra reps vacated by his injured team mate, the former Arizona star is generating buzz like Denarius Moore did last year and we all know how that turned out.
Hes the type of receiver QBs love because of his ability to extend and stab errant passes out of the air is truly amazing.
Concerns about his plodding 40 time saw him slip to the Raiders late in the draft but he plays much faster on field and his clean routes and crisp breaks gain him separation.
Speaking of separation, one or more of these young hopefuls will vie for a roster slot as well over the next few weeks.
Duke Calhoun, Rod Streater and Eddie McGee drawing notable mention so far but Travionte Sessions, Derek Carrier, Brandon Carswell and Thomas Mayo are all nipping at their heels for their shot as a Raider.
