Mini camp notes, quotes and observations
By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, June 12th, 2012 at 2:57 pm in Oakland Raiders.
First-year coach Dennis Allen and his staff got their first look at the entire roster Tuesday, with every player showing up for the start of the three-day, mandatory mini camp in Alameda.
Fullback Manase Tonga and safety Mike Mitchell weren’t on the field, but they were here rehabilitating knee injuries. Defensive lineman Dave Tollefson, center Stefen Wisniewski and defensive tackle Travis Ivey were the only players in uniform who weren’t able to participate in individual and team drills. They worked out on the side.
Allen had even more reason to feel good about the way things went after seeing defensive end Matt Shaughnessy practice for the first time since last September and linebacker Aaron Curry retun from a nagging injury he suffered earlier this offseason.
“It’s nice to have him out there,” Allen said. “Obviously, he’s rusty. It’s been a long time since he’s lined up and played defense. He is a little rusty, but it’s good that we get him out here and get a little work.”
Shaughnessy hurt his shoulder against the New York Jets on Sept. 23, underwent surgery and missed the final 13 games last season.
He spent the better part of this offseason rehabilitating the shoulder. On Tuesday, he turned it loose for the first time.
“I’m full-go now,” Shaughnessy said. “If there was a game on Sunday, I’d play.”
Shaughnessy said he is energized by the new defensive scheme.
“Once we learn this defense and start playing together, it’s going to be tough to stop because there’s so many different things we can do. And if we’re all on the same page, we’re just going to be working faster.”
Allen said he likes what he sees from his defensive linemen.
They can be “as good as they want to be,” Allen said. “It’s dependent on how much those guys are willing to put forth as far as the effort to continue to improve. If they’re willing to put forth effort to continue to improve, they can be as good as they want to be.”
Defensive tackle Richard Seymour called Shaughnessy a vital cog in the Raiders defense, someone the Raiders missed a great deal last season.
“Oh, man, tremendously,” Seymour said of missing Shaughnessy’s presence. “I tell him all the time, he’s the best run defensive end in the NFL, for sure, in terms of stopping the run. He’s the best in the NFL against the run. I can’t say that against the pass now for all the sacks a lot of the other defensive ends have. In terms of the run, I’ll put him out there with anyone. He’s definitely developed into a complete player. It was a big blow for us when he went down.”
Shane Lechler shanked his first punt Tuesday, with the ball kicked from his own end zone failing to sniff the 50-yard line. Call it his mulligan.
On his second punt, Lechler bombed the ball some 70 yards, causing more than a few bystanders to ooh and aah.
“That was my first ball since the Pro Bowl,” Lechler said. “I go back mentally to the basics. Drop it, watch the ball hit your foot. I got up through a few of them today and felt good about it. It’s one of those things where I was worried on how it was going to be. I haven’t touched a ball since the Pro Bowl. It came off well. Looks like I still got it.”
The question is, will the Raiders still have Lechler beyond this season? This is the final year of a contract that made Lechler the highest-paid punter in NFL history.
If he has his way, he will be re-signed by the Raiders and spend the remainder of his career in a silver-and-black uniform. He is entering his 13th NFL season.
“Yeah, why not?” Lechler said. “I’ve been here 13 years, what’s 13 more? I’d like to finish it up here if I could. I know Mark (Davis, owner) believes in me and the Davis family does. I want to be here when it turns back around. I was here when it was awesome, and it would be cool to see it come full circle.”
The Raiders qualified for the playoffs in each of Lechler’s first three NFL seasons, including a Super Bowl appearance in the 2002 season.
He has enjoyed sustained success throughout his NFL career. However, the Raiders are in the midst of a nine-year stretch in which they failed to win more than eight games in a season and make the playoffs.
Lechler said he feels a sense of urgency for the Raiders to get back to the playoffs so that he and older players such as Sebastian Janikowski and Cooper Carlisle can taste what that feels like at least one more time.
Lechler said his right (kicking) leg feels as strong now as it has at any point in his career. It’s not a stretch to envision Lechler kicking well into his 40s.
Time and again Tuesday, Lechler launched balls that forced the returner to retreat and field the ball 65 yards or more away from the line of scrimmage. Three straight times, returners muffed Lechler punts.
Rookie wide receiver Juron Criner has developed somewhat of a cult following based on his early showing in offseason practices.
With good reason, too. It seems as if he turns in a head-turning play every time you look. Tuesday was no different.
On one play, Criner ran upfield, made a sharp cut, turned around and was welcomed with the thud of the ball hitting him in the chest.
No problem. Criner processed the situation in a split second, clutched the ball to his chest and fell to the ground for yet another breathtaking reception.
Jacoby Ford, DeQuan Lewis, Bryan McCann and Chaz Powell split time on punt returns. No word on whether Moore would have been part of the rotation, though he handled that role quite a bit last season.
Ford was guilty of muffing one punt. He looked sure-handed on his other chances.
Mark Davis and general manager Reggie McKenize watched most of the practice from the sideline. Reggie’s twin brother Raleigh also was spotted on the field for the first time since he was hired earlier this offseason.
Seymour has spent most of the offseason working out on his own, away from the Raiders year-round facility in Alameda.
He said he trains four days a week and that his offseason regimen this year helped him shed 10 pounds from his well-built frame.
“I did a little boxing, a little bit of everything,” Seymour said. “I get more football specific as the season gets closer. I definitely train four days a week for sure. That’s always been my routine. That’s one thing that keeps you strong, especially in the interior of the line.”
Allen said he likes what he sees of Seymour so far and that he’s expecting big things from him this season.
“I wouldn’t say it would be any different than what it would be in the past,” Allen said of the perennial Pro Bowler. “I would expect good things out of him. He’s a Pro Bowl player and I would expect that to continue to be the case. I would expect him to make plays when we need him to make big plays.”
Seymour’s impression of Allen and his staff is a positive one, he said.
“They understand what they want and they do a good job of teaching how to get it done,” Seymour said. “That’s a quality that’s overlooked in the NFL because even though you may have talented athletes you still need to teach them what to do and how to do it.
They do a great job of getting that message across and making it become (reality). You can hear it like you heard it before but someone just makes it crystal clear like, ‘Oh, I get it now.’ That’s kind of what they do a really good job of doing. They’re really smart guys who understand the game. It still remains to be seen.”

HC Dennis Allen on Richard Seymour:
“I would expect good things out of him. He’s a Pro Bowl player and I would expect that to continue to be the case. I would expect him to make plays when we need him to make big plays.”
I expected BIG things from pro bowler Richard Seymour as well…like when Detroit was going 98 yds. to destroy our season, or when Raiders desperately needed to stop Phiip Rivers from going 991/2 yds. to put the final dagger into a pathetic defense.
As it turns out I was horribly disappointed.

O the price of the battery keeps dropping every year but the “core ” charge keeps going up.
the battery will most likley out last the car. I think it comes with a 10 year warranty. Maybe longer now. When the Prius first came out the battery was like 7 grand. Now they are around $2500.
And yes its a nice ride. Very dependable don’t see them in the shop or sell many mechanical parts for them. But,…. I do sell a few crash parts for them. And that $hit ain’t cheep!! lol the
radiator for the inverter alone is $1200. That’s where I get paid!! lol lol lol.
And stay away from the Highlander hybrid, they have a few fit and finish problems.
Oh yeah one more thing about the battery. Aside from accident damage..asxlong as we have
had hybrids on the road I have not sold a hybrid battery to an outside wholesale account.
Replaced some in our shop but if you have a good service history. Toyota ail step up to the plate
and help.

That last drive against Houston found Matt Schaub at the 3 yd. line and the Raiders being saved by Tyvon Branch blocking his lane to the endzone and Huff making the game saving int.
I don’t recall Seymour saving the day that game.
But listen…I don’t hate Seymour..I WANT him to play well and be the guy everyone says he is supposed to be.
I’m still very bitter that NOONE manned up and said “No. Not in our house. Not today beyotches”. Instead, they just laid down and let Stafford and Rivers pick them apart with no pass rush whatsoever.

But again if you remember that game, I think they gave a sweep to Tolbert, and he went for like 50 yards. And then they hit a 40 yarder to Malcolm floyd for six. You can’t really blame Seymour for that.

I don’t recall Seymour saving the day that game.

There’s a reason for that. Seymour busts in and sacks Schaub for like a 12 yard loss and they call him for a phantom face mask or roughing penalty which not only negates the sack but gives them 15 yards and stops the clock and sets up the plays at the end. Ridiculous really.

no the core is the deposit on the old part. If the battery has to be replaced you pay the price of the battery and the core charge. Once Toyota credits me for core you get a core refund.
and you never need to “charge” the hybrid battery. Every time you step on the brake it charges it. We call it synergery drive!! fancy $hit I tell ya!

Schefter just brought up great point for all the Manning lovers.
Who knows Peyton better than Indy? After all those yrs. NOBODY.
Schefter notes that IF Indy believed Peyton could be the QB he has been than they would’ve bargained their # 1 pick off and gotten a treasure trove in return to surround Peyton with. Instead, they pick Luck to take over.
Schefters right on this. The Colts did not believe in him anymore.
I hope they’re right.

If OKC is going to have any chance in this series, they must realize that Chris Bosh is EXCLUSIVELY a catch and shoot guy. He is one of the best in the biz at it.
You have to force him to put it on the deck for a bounce or two, and his effectiveness drops massively.
You can’t keep Perkins or Ibaka on him, they just aren’t comfy getting in a guy’s air space 19 feet from the tin.
Going to have to switch either Durant or Thabo or someone on Bosh and make him dribble.

June 12th, 2012 at 9:31 pm
I was trying to figure out why the Raiders don’t express alot of obsessive loyalty in their statements.
You don’t hear many guys talk about how happy they are to be Raiders, or silver and black do or die type stuff like you hear from the steelers for instance when Hines Ward cries about “bleeding black and gold” the rest of his life etc.
Only thing I can come up with is the constant coaching changes we have every yr. which affect continuity and a general vibe of ‘us against the world’ type stuff.
The same staff and continuity contributes to that sense of camaraderie i think with a team.
It was one reason I was against Cable getting canned when he did. Then Hue.
It’ll take some time i guess.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:44 pm
The thing with constant coaching changes is that it sends a message that this IS a business. You hear comments like that from our guys in regard to our many HC’s getting canned.
I hate losing more than anybody and i’ve trended toward “win or get lost” but even a knee jerk “give me wins” now guy like myself was taken aback by the Cable ouster and even more so by Hue’s pink slip. Not cuz I think Hue was a great HC or that Cable was but I finally got to the point that I was sick of seeing us have a new HC every dang yr. It’s embarrassing and it adds to the whole “dysfunctional” tag we’ve received over recent yrs. The only constant being Al Davis; but Al was far removed from being present the last yrs. Players knew he was there, but he wasn’t rolling up in the motorized cart as much as he once did so the “presence” of that “leader” a team needs was not eveident.
Hey. It’s a new era now so I hope the players feel a better sense that this is more than just a business.

DJ,
Hines ward was drafted by the steelers. Played there his entire career, and he played for a CS team in Pitt.
We have Lechler and Jano who were drafted by this org and played for us for over a decade, they are loyal, but would be more outspoken about it IMO, if we had a better team. It’s hard to promote a losing team. You make a great point about coaching changes, and Lechler was outspoken about this issue when we fired Cable aka The Fat Monkey.

1- Moore
2- Criner
3- DHB
4- Ford
5- LM

Met John Gruden tonight at Hooter’s at the Promenade in Santa Monica. He took a pic with me and my friends. Before we took the picture, he gave me his Super Bowl ring to pose with. Asked him his thoughts on JaMarcus. The first thing he said when he heard his name is that he got both he and Jeff Garcia fired from Tampa Bay. He said he worked JaMarcus and Brady Quinn out in 2007 and that JR was “smarter than sht” on the board, but his southern speech pattern made him hard to understand, and he told him so. Misunderstood player just like I thought! He also said that Big 12 QBs suck and cited VY, Colt McCoy, Gabbert and Sam Bradford as examples. Said all the shotgun and check-with-mes don’t translate to the NFL. Challenged him on VY and he agreed that he’s an exception. Finally, he said he will coach again, but that he has to “find a guy he can work for”. Asked him if he would ever consider working for the Raiders again and he said “I don’t know”. One of the coolest dudes you’ll ever meet.

He’s the best in the NFL against the run. I can’t say that against the pass now for all the sacks a lot of the other defensive ends have. In terms of the run, I’ll put him out there with anyone. He’s definitely developed into a complete player. It was a big blow for us when he went down.”

If Bush is in there blitz. He can’t/won’t pass block and will get your QB killed.
I don’t miss Bush. He proved last season to be just ordinary & quite frankly, that’s not good enough. He’s had a couple of good games early on but crapped out later in the season. He’s simply NOT a full time RB. His heir apparent, Goodson, appears to be an upgrade from Bush. I guess we’ll see in 2012.
I also have nothing but good feelings for JCampbell. He gave his all in here last year and helped turn this team around. I think he’s a class guy and deserves some breaks.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:44 pm
DJ,
I find it very logical that Raiders don’t hype their love of the team, such as Hines Ward does. My thoughts are, why would they ? Bad coach after bad coach, mistake after mistake, crappy 1st round draft picks after 1st rounds picks. Most of all, was a wasted and mentally incompetent majority owner/GM who led them on AL’s Folly for the past 10 years (at least). He looked like an elder Freddie Kruger with open sores on his face.
Nightmare, is the word most pertinent to the players. If you look at the good teams, the players went through so much together, like the Steelers. There is a love in the organization for the players just by the fact that it tries to be the best and does what it has to do to maintain dynasty.
If the Raiders now follow suit I am sure feelings of players will change.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:51 pm
Johnny,
It is a fact we will miss Bush this season, especially when DMAC goes down. To think skinny legged Taiwan Jones will take up the slack with the rest of the motley crew of receivers we have, is ridiculous.
When Bush took the load for DMAC, Hue the Pimpin Magnificent didn’t know how to use him at all. Plus Bush is a righteous receiver. And of course again, naturally D. Moore is hurt. If Ford goes down then we’ll be fore feeding it to DHB who will make plenty of yards but few TD’s.
The power of M. Bush; he wasn’t nor never will be a franchise back, but he is darn good.

Miami might get swept, RRS.
I don’t understand how they expect to get anything accomplished against OKC with Haslem at C and LeBron at the 4.
Battier HAS to go back to the bench and Bosh HAS to start.
June 13th, 2012 at 6:18 am
The only way I think OKC loses this series is if Russ Westbrook decides he needs 25 shots a night.
As great as a scorer he is, because he is, his decision-making is still a tad iffy at times.
June 13th, 2012 at 6:19 am
A healthy Shaughnessy is going to be a huge deal for the defense. If it’s true that he’s 100% or close to it, I’m liking this defense more and more already.
The key to this defense working is pressure from the front 7. If they can get to the QB and fast, the secondary won’t be as big an issue.
June 13th, 2012 at 6:19 am
Criner and Streeter seem good enough to be the 5th and 6th WRs on the team.
Maybe compete for the 4th spot if the coaches aren’t high on Murphy.

Didn’t watch the entire game, but Miami matches up well with OKC, and especially when they play that physical half court attack and lots of ball movement. It was working in the first half and then they kind of milked the shot clock instead of staying active. OKC had a lot more energy in the 2nd half. Really Miami could have had that game. It’ll be a good series.
June 13th, 2012 at 6:23 am

Don’t give all the credit to Durant & don’t give all the blame to LeBron, NBA fans
it’s not the simple. I told YOU PEOPLE yesterday it’s all about the supporting cast
Battier & Chalmers were good enough. Bosh & Wade weren’t
Heat got absolutely nothing out of Haslem & Miller
June 13th, 2012 at 6:26 am
Bosh should start, but Haslem should go to the bench.
Battier has been maybe their most EFFICIENT player the last 3 games.
He is shooting over 55% from three’s, and has two turnovers in his last 110+ minutes.
Plus he is their 2nd best half-court defender.
June 13th, 2012 at 6:29 am
Miami matches up well with Bosh in the starting lineup. But LeBron guarding Perkins?????? Battier and Wade trying to guard Durantchula????
I’m surprised the suit blamers aren’t out in full force today.
D Wade on Westbrook
LeBron on Durant
Bosh on Ibaka
It’s not that damn hard.
June 13th, 2012 at 6:29 am
Westbrook scored 27.
Ibaka, Sefolosha & Collison combined for 27 more
Durant’s supporting cast showed up.
LBJ’s didn’t.
End Result = OKC victory
June 13th, 2012 at 6:29 am
Haslem is grabbing defensive rebounds and that’s about it.
He clogs the lane offensively, shooting horribly all playoffs (under 30% for awhile) and isn’t doing anything special defensively.

Nick Collison was huge last night.
Westbrook did score 27, but on 24 shots. Not that efficient.
Compared to what 32 on 20 shots for KD?
The Heat brought in 3 max player guys. They have KNOWN FOR TWO YEARS now, that they can’t have those 3 and a solid bench.
The Mike Miller, Shane Battier, Norris Cole’s of the world is who they will be stuck with unless they move one of the 3.
June 13th, 2012 at 6:33 am

JFB gets it. Haslem is basically worthless unless he’s coming off the bench in the 4th qtr. I wouldn’t give him more than 2 minutes in the first 3 quarters unless somebody is injured or in foul trouble!

The thing about Battier is he plays LeBron’s position.
You cant start the game with Battier on Durant.
Don’t discount Haslems rebounding. He would be the same non stat sheet filler that Perkins is for OKC. It’s about match ups, and you HAVE to start with your so called big 3 against their big 3.
LeBron can get Durant in foul trouble, or at least make him work for 40 min on the defensive end.

Listed at 5′10 (probably more 5′9 in reality) he could hit those long range threes and actually do some things on the court in his prime.

If the Thunder win game 2 the series is over. In the 2-3-2 format there is no way in hell the team that plays the middle three games at home wins all three, so the Thunder will return home for games 6 and 7 with a 3-2 series lead if they win game 2, and the Thunder will not lose both of those games.

the Heat seemingly ran out of gas.
“We know we have to have more production for sure,” LeBron James said afterward. “We’re going to have to have more guys in there to give me and D-Wade a rest. And Shane, Shane played a lot of minutes. But Spo will figure that out. We’ll be more conscious about it, just trying to get a minute or two here or there so we can finish strong. But I don’t think it was much of a problem tonight.”
Whether or not Bosh starts Game 2 probably doesn’t matter. With Bosh on the bench, the Heat got off to a great start. But Miami needs more than six contributors, especially against this opponent.
The question is, who will that other contributor be? Spoelstra didn’t seem to know after the Game 1 loss.
“I have to see who’s really available,” he said.
If Jones has recovered from his migraine by Thursday, he could be that guy. Miller is dealing with back issues and might not be able to play more than the 10 minutes he logged on Tuesday. Cole might be able to match up with Derek Fisher, but probably can’t get caught guarding Russell Westbrook.
Really, there’s nobody beyond the top six that Spoelstra knows he can rely on. At this point, going to his bench is just grasping at straws. And that could be an issue for the Heat throughout the series.
“Going into this game, we were going to try and keep it a tight rotation, maybe not as tight as it was, and give us our best shot,” Spoelstra said. “But I’ll probably try to go a little bit deeper in Game 2.”

It didn’t take long for one of our WR’s to go down, this team needs Louis Murphy’s skills and experience as insurance, unless you want McGee, Streater or Calhoun and their zero career receptions moving up in the depth chart and getting closer to seeing the field.
Murphy is the kind of WR who can thrive in a West Coast based offense, he’s big, he blocks and he has run after the catch ability.

Murphy is the kind of WR who can thrive in a West Coast based offense, he’s big, he blocks and he has run after the catch ability.
++++++++++++++++
I agree that Murphy can block downfield. Always an underrated aspect of the WR position. Turns good runs into big plays.

rookies Criner & Streater might be starting a few games for us this season if Heyward-Bey, Moore, Ford, Murphy & McGee keep getting “nicked” !!

Bob,
Not to be a LM hater, but I don’t think he’s recovered from that injury up in his head. He’s gone the way of JLH (I fear).
And while LM does add experienced insurance, there are a number of street free agents who offer just as much experienced insurance, healthy, and ready to go after it. LM’s not healthy, and if he wants a job, he needs to prove himself in preseason. He’s got a lot of questions to answer. If he can’t, I’d not be upset about cutting him.
June 13th, 2012 at 7:27 am
I am pretty happy we are going back to the ZBS.
All that bluster from Hue about going back to the power-line, and his style of O-line produced these results:
-Nearly got our starting QB killed, who was hurt running for his life for the 2nd time in about 5 snaps, effectively breaking his shoulder and probably ruining his NFL future. Great job Hue
-Had Mike Bush average his career-worst in YPC, and be pretty ineffective in short-yardage situations. Stellar as usual Huebris.
-Had a zillion penalties, especially from our tackles.
O-line will be massively improved this year, simply due to scheme.

I am more concerned for Lou’s physical health than mental health.
He has to stay healthy, since it seems we have a few tightly wound guys who are always getting “dinged” (Ford and Moore) with some muscle issue.
Murph was more productive the last two years than Ford has been as a WR, with a lot less fumbles.

I will say that Lou is our best cluth, 4th quarter WR right now.
Remember all those Hue Jackson specials, the deep ball on 3rd and 3 late in the 4th that never iced the game?
We tried it in Houston to Moore (fail), DHB in the Jets game (fail), Chaz in the Lions game (fail) and I think one or two others.
The only that worked? The one to Murp in the Bears game.

Raider O just pissed himself
June 13th, 2012 at 8:10 am
Lechler said he feels a sense of urgency for the Raiders to get back to the playoffs so that he and older players such as Sebastian Janikowski and Cooper Carlisle can taste what that feels like at least one more time.
Lechler said his right (kicking) leg feels as strong now as it has at any point in his career. It’s not a stretch to envision Lechler kicking well into his 40s.
Time and again Tuesday, Lechler launched balls that forced the returner to retreat and field the ball 65 yards or more away from the line of scrimmage. Three straight times, returners muffed Lechler punts

“The question is, will the Raiders still have Lechler beyond this season? This is the final year of a contract that made Lechler the highest-paid punter in NFL history.”
He knows that he will not get Al Davis money this time but he will still get paid like a top punter no way Reggie lets him go.
Now with regards to Curry. If he could just play on running downs and we can get him off the filed in obvious passing situations he can be great. When he has to turn around he gets lost. This is why Seattle let him go and it will be why he sees diminished playing time this year if he cant get it right.
June 13th, 2012 at 8:13 am
Jacoby Ford, DeQuan Lewis, Bryan McCann and Chaz Powell split time on punt returns. No word on whether Moore would have been part of the rotation, though he handled that role quite a bit last season.
Ford was guilty of muffing one punt. He looked sure-handed on his other chances.

Ford being asked to return punts is a good sign. He needs to contribute someplace, especially if Criner takes his #3 WR role
him muffing a punt, is not a good sign … but I’m hardly surprised by it!

Her name, of old, is Denmark
And she is Freya’s home
In days of long-ago
This land was home to heroes
From war they rested here
Then forth they went, to smite the foe
Now to their graves they’ve gone
Among the barrow-stones
This land is yet so fair
Her waters yet so blue
And green are still her leaves
And noble ladies, maidens fair,
And men and able lads
Still dwell on Danish soil
Hail Sovereign, hail Home!
Hail every Dane who labours
To do his very best
Our ancient Denmark shall abide,
While yet the waves reflect
The beeches in their blue

The Oakland Raiders announced Monday that they have signed former Harding punter/kicker Eddy Carmona to a National Football League free agent contract.
Carmona, a native of Charleston, Ark., was one of seven free agents signed by the Raiders after they participated on a tryout basis in the team rookie mini-camp last weekend.
Carmona played his first three seasons at the University of Central Arkansas before transferring to Harding as a senior. In the 2011 season, Carmona averaged 38.3 yards per punt, made 46-of-49 PATs and 10-of-13 field goals, including a Harding-record 62-yard field goal against East Central.
Carmona, who earned 1st Team All-Great American Conference and 2nd Team All-Super Region 4, is only the second Harding special-teams player to earn an opportunity to play in the NFL
If Carmona makes the Raiders’ regular season roster, he will be only the second Harding player to appear in the NFL. Carmona is the second Harding player to sign a contract with the Raiders organization. In 1979, Harding running back Mike Vanlandingham signed a free agent contract with Oakland.

May 2, 2012 – After the 2012 National Football League Draft concluded, there was a mad dash to begin signing undrafted free agents. No sooner had the draft ended than the Oakland Raiders put pen to paper to sign Fort Valley State University punter Marquette King. King, a First Team All-SIAC member that was recently voted the “2011 FVSU Wildcats Most Valuable Player,” signed a three-year deal with Raiders.
Damond Talbot of SB Nation “Mocking the Draft” site had this to say about King:
“The reason they were so impressed was because he was constantly booming 70 and 80-yard punts on the sidelines of the practice, which were recorded at over 5.6 seconds hang time. That is a pretty amazing statistic. This year alone, Marquette has punted an 80 yarder against Bethune Cookman University and a 76-yard punt against Clark Atlanta University. These punts are not a fluke; this kid can do it, over and over again.”
Talbot continued: “Marquette King might be the most special punter coming out of college since Shane Lechler of Oakland in 2000. This year alone [King] has hit two bombs over 75 yards and they were in the air the complete time.”
In his final season at FVSU, King led the conference in punting with a 43 yards per punt average. His longest punt of the season was an 80-yard kick. Twenty one of his punts landed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. Sixteen of his punts were for 50 yards or more, and of his 60 punt attempts during the season, only one was blocked. King is a native of Macon, Ga.

Yeah, a bit worrisome having such a weak starting unit for LBs and DBs, and majorly lacking in depth (especially at LB). Wheeler I think will supprise people though. Probably will turn out to be our best LB this year.

The dude that led the DII division in punting is the real punting prospect (he is a senior this year) from that conference.
Taylor Accardi is his name, keep an eye on that.
Averaged over 5 yards gross more a punt than Mr. King, and was All-Conference everything (ahead of King).

Ford being asked to return punts is a good sign. He needs to contribute someplace, especially if Criner takes his #3 WR role
him muffing a punt, is not a good sign … but I’m hardly surprised by it!
====================
I’m truly amazed at how many of our receivers look like amazing potential upsides, off to a great start and then fade away. Or maybe we’re just super optimistic. I mean we were like JLH and then he got one hit and never did anything. Murphy “wow, he’s way better than DHB” and then gets worse. Ford “AMazing catches saves the day – he’s going to be a top WR” and now seems to be fading. Do they peak so quickly???
The only receiver who is getting better is DHB and that’s only because he SUCKED soooooo bad when he first started and is steadily catching some of the balls thrown his way on short to middle routes that hit his body (or aren’t above his head or below his waist).
Now Moore is the next great thing but is hamstrung all the time and…man! I hope he actually comes to his potential this year instead of fading out.

I can’t see Pat Riley being too thrilled with all of that.
I mean, these athletes should have (I know plenty do) two outfits for the post-game presser. The winning one and the losing one.
To Jamarcus’s credit, he didn’t bust out the mink and the stunner shades unless we won (from what I remember).
Those two fools outfits would be kind of funny and what not if they won. But in a loss, it just looks ridiculous.

It’s good to think of Bryant emerging, a healthy “Nasty”, a re-focused Seymour, throw Ivey in there/ give Kelly a series off, Burris the heat seaking missle, and Wheeler’s hair flying around the secondary…….It just feels good man. Not to mention that Huff will probably be better as a Free-lancer and not locked into Man coverege.

Shonasty is gonna be beastial this year at RDE. Getting him back and working this early in the offseason can’t be understated. The line play will be nothing like what we remember from last year. It will be so much better and you’ll see a collapsing pocket on most plays.
Seymour boxing regimen? Why not if can take off 10 lbs of flab. Tighten up those abs and get the line back to what it’s supposed to be. Love to hear these reports. Keep em coming.

553… So true… And yet every year the Nfl media gushes over the chokers …
I don’t see a clear favorite in our division this year….and I like the direction Reggie and Allen have our team …. I’m thinking Palmer has a better year than Rivers … I’m going with that ..
June 13th, 2012 at 10:03 am
Stop blocking me.. Stop protecting joe pa, mcqeary & sandusky please..
June 13th, 2012 at 10:04 am
@Fingers,
I agree with that, and I’m tempted to say CP3 will be on par with or better than Manning this year. Everybody’s all over Mannings Sack too; thinkin’ the Donkey’s are gonna win the Damn Super Bowl next year. GET REAL. Palmer may just be the Best in the West next year.

Remember that CP3 averaged nearly 300 yards in 9 starts. Over 16 games, that’s 4700 yards passing. Remember the media making a big deal over the 4 QB’s around 5000 yards last year?
CP3 did close to that kind of performance off a dusty couch. No one mentions him. He did it despite having no DMC, Ford or Murphy.
CP3 is the best QB in the AFC West. Or at least is in the conversation.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:08 am
I just bet a Dolphins fan at the office that McFadden would have more yards from scrimmage than Reggie Bush next year.
I hope he stays healthy this year!
June 13th, 2012 at 10:09 am
Rockstar… You are correct… I’m feeling pretty good about the Raiders chances right now…. Just gotta hope those injuries don’t kill us again ..
June 13th, 2012 at 10:10 am
Donks usually don’t have a lot of hype. But they are going to be overhyped this year. Just wait till everyone gasps in Denver when Manning goes down and his helmet bounces off the turf. You can hear a pin drop. It’ll be like that all year, walking on eggshells.

June 13th, 2012 at 10:19 am
Not trying to beat up M. Bush. Oh he had a few good games in relief of DMC, but his burst petered out as the season went on. The line didn’t perform as well, and the playcalling turned to Hue’s gadget plays that didn’t work as much in the 2nd half.
M. Bush became a liability to have in the backfield, especially in pass pro. Now, if DMC can stay healthy, the combo of DMC and CP3 is going to keep opposing DC’s guessing and chewing tums.

Just spend a few minutes watching his Senior highlights from SDSU…On MOST plays he was shedding at least 1 block while in persuit. There were some plays where he shed TWO blockers and STILL made the “Effing” tackle. This cat has a nose for the football, and a rutheless / savage desire to stop it’s forward progress.

Curry is too much boom or bust as on OLB for every down.
He makes good plays in the backfield, and is a very solid tackler.
But when he screws up, he just runs right out of the play, doesn’t get blocked, and lets RB’s not even have to break stride off the edge.
His mistakes cost 25+ yards and they aren’t as infrequent as they need to be.

I know he has very few sacks for his career, but I didn’t really see much of him blitzing last year to gain an opinion on him one way or another.
Just don’t see him being a read and react guy in this new defense. Maybe DA can find a role for him being a thumper on the outside and leave the thinking to our football MENSA member, Rolando McClain.

Rod Streater has been turning heads and had those not paying attention wondering what the hell was going on when he joined Heyward Bey and Jacoby Ford for 1st team reps(!) fellow WR and rookie stand out Juron Criner has been the one making spectacular catch after catch but the 24 yr old Streater may have an advantage over the talented 22 yr old Criner who worked with the 2nd team today.
Criner, a fifth rnd (168th overall) draft pick by the Raiders, has been a stand out this off season. He made another great catch late in practice in heavy traffic on a laser from QB Terrelle Pryor.

June 13th, 2012 at 1:51 pm
In 61 career games, including 24 starts, Wheeler has a whole 2 passes defensed.
McClain has 20 already.
Not sure what to make of that, other than McClain has definitely faced a lot more live bullets on the field in passing situations than our other LB’s, probably combined.

The one area that I have been impressed with on McClain is his ability to knock down passes. He can’t cover very well, but he is tall enough to get a paw up once in a while. Still can’t stop the run or make the right decisions on the field, and half-azzes it, but at least he can do one thing right!

The DOW is up over 400 points, the S&P is on a 4 year high and the dollar is on a 3 year high against all major currencies.
This says investor confidence is high. These people actually put their money where their mouth is while most people sit on the sidelines and spout ignorantly what the media is selling them. Just think about it for a minute….in 2008 we were in the worst recession since the great depression and here we are 4 years later and investor confidence is high.
How can this be when so many reports are telling me the country is falling off a cliff?
I will trust the people putting their money in Wall Street and the FOREX before I will listen to the peanut gallery.
Now with all that being said if McCain was elected instead of our current president this would all be exactly the same EXCEPT…the liberals would be crying about job losses and high gas prices instead of the conservative party complaining about it.

The starting wrs should be as follows: Moore-DHB-Ford(slot). If criner proves to be a starter, then he replaces DHB! Trade DHB for a position needed. DHB is not a slot receiver and has trade value. NEVER,NEVER put his name in the same sentence as Cliff Branch! Let it be a lineup of fifth rnd draft choices tht produce. Moore runs the best routes, Ford runs better with the ball in hand(slot), and Criner just may have the best hands(possesion). DHB has hands of stone and does not run good routes. He is getting better but considering where we drafted him, he is getting every chance in the world. He to has been injured. Ford can and has taken over a game because he cant be covered frm the slot one on one. He is the poor man’s DeSean Jackson/Steve Smith tht can battle for the ball then poof TD! OK ok, I gotta calm down. Im a newby, but Palmer is talking these guys up for a reason.
Huff has not performed like a 1st rounder. He must have left his hitn tackln skills in Texas! While I miss Al(RIP), the draft did suffer in judgement. Jamarcus over Calvin(Megatron?)Coach Kiffin and Coach Chuckie must have some interesting phone conversations. Im just sayn
