Raider Nation Celebration all lined up
By Steve Corkran
Thursday, July 12th, 2012 at 12:40 am in Oakland Raiders.
Those who wish to get their first look at the 2012 Raiders in a game have to wait until Aug. 13, when the Raiders kick off their exhibition season with a home game against the Dallas Cowboys.
However, the Raiders will provide a sneak peek at the 2012 Raiders on Aug. 12 at the Oakland Coliseum as part of Raider Nation Celebration day.
The event runs from 1 p.m.-4 in Parking Lot B on the south side of the Coliseum complex. Here is the press release issued by the Raiders:
The Oakland Raiders will celebrate the start of football this year with the Raider Nation Celebration on Sunday, August 12 from 1 – 4 p.m. at O.co Coliseum, in parking lot “B,” which is located on the south side of the Coliseum Complex.
This family-friendly event is free and open to the general public and takes place one day before the Oakland Raiders kick off the 2012 campaign in the national spotlight, hosting the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night, August 13.
The Raiders have hosted variations of this fan rally since 1998 at a number of locations throughout Oakland, including Jack London Square, Frank Ogawa Plaza and the Coliseum.
The Raider Nation Celebration will be highlighted by the introduction of first-year coach Dennis Allen and the 2012 Raiders and Raiderettes.
The event will also feature an interactive Kid’s Zone as well as autograph opportunities with Raider Legends and Raiderettes.
A number of exclusive opportunities – locker room tours for season ticket holders and a food tasting for suite holders – will also be part of this year’s Raider Nation Celebration.
Those attending the Raider Nation Celebration will be able to shop at special on site Raider Image, the team’s official store, and food and alcohol-free beverage concessions stands will be available to fans.
There will also be the opportunity for fans to select tickets for Raider games in what stacks up to be a challenging, exciting 2012 schedule. The Raiders also open the 2012 regular season in prime time, hosting AFC West rival San Diego Chargers on Monday night, September 10, in the second half of the ESPN double-header.
For more information on the Silver and Black, please log on to www.raiders.com, “LIKE” the Raiders on Facebook (www.facebook.com/Raiders) and follow the Raiders on Twitter (twitter.com/Raiders @RAIDERS).

Good Morning Nation!!!
Morning Guest, AIG, and others…
Weird how they are gonna hold it in B Lot on the Hegenberger side! Where are they gonna make us park???
Guest, I’ll try to be there as well.

Hwnrdr, I hope to see you there. If I can make it (it’s not in my hands) I’m going to rent a car and drive up from San Jose. I can’t remember the parking layout. It’s been so long. Do you think maybe parking at a Bart station and taking the Bart is maybe a better idea?

Good morning Rockstar, yes it would be cool if you could come too. I’m know I’ll be in San Jose sometime the 2nd week of August, but someone else is paying and making the arrangements and I still don’t know. It would suck if they flew me back a day before or after Raider Nation Celebration. Not in my hands.
July 12th, 2012 at 6:07 am
Guest, not sure. Hoping that when we get our season tix, there will be a better idea of parking situations. BART wouldn’t be a bad idea, but I’m wondering if they will let us park in A and D.
Dirt Lot, I plan on going to that Monday nighter. Are you going? I know Brien and Bob will be there, not sure about DMAC and others.
Rockstar, it would be cool if you could come to that.

I’m so thirsty for Raider football. The last time I went to a Raider game was back in the 90’s. Even to see preseason football will be a huge treat.
I had tickets in my hands for the Raiders at Bucs back in 08, and missed that game regretably.
I’m dying to see it live again!

I cant wait to see a legit defense on the field. The offense is going to score if the Def comes together we can make some noise!

Sup draft is today at 1:00 PM EST, It will be interesting to see where Josh Gordon goes. 21 teams including the Raiders went to his pro day. I think they will be drawing straws and breaking out tiebreakers for who gets to spend their 3rd round pick to get him. The good news is that bubble sorts everybody’s 3rd round pick up a slot.

Me too. There are so many new faces on defense I’ve yet to see in Silver and Black. Should be fun to see firsthand the debuts of Weaver, Spencer, Bartell, Tollefson, Burris and a first look at the new Tarver schemes. I’m sure they will still be pretty vanilla, but it will be fun to see anyway.

last game I went to live in Oakland was a preseason game against the Cardinals with McCown & Walter at QB !!

Russell still hadn’t signed his contract yet, Culpepper didn’t play [wasnt signed yet, or just signed a few days before that game?]
I think Booty was the 3rd stringer, but he didn’t get in the game.
McCown – 1st half
Walter – 2nd half

I think that sentiment is shared all around. It’s easy to forget that we didnt’ have Shaugnessey for 13 games last year, and we talk so much about the rookies and scheme that Tollefson’s name hasn’t been thrown around. He’s coming from a championship team and good coaching. I like his attitude. He says “You gotta EARN the right to rush the passer. You do that by STOPPING the run.” We’re going to have Hunger, desire to prove, players feeling like they get to shine finally, and guys excited about playing defense; which to me is the important part. THEY’RE EXCITED…..which makes ME excited.

Tollefson is just a depth guy.
the good thing is, we needed depth!!
July 12th, 2012 at 7:09 am
So much of our defense would have looked better if guys would JUST TACKLE…..Stop flying around the “F”ing ball and taking bad angles…Shed a block or two. You can only blame scheme so much. IF we get more exotic this year disguising blitzes, multiple fronts, and what-not, the boys still NEED to tackle somebody for it to work….GET IN THE RUCOUS…Swarm to the damned ball. I wanna see some savages out there.
July 12th, 2012 at 7:10 am
The way I understand the Sup draft rules, they break all 32 teams into 3 groups and give them common seeds, bottom feeders getting in group one, middle of the pack teams are in group two and playoff teams in group three.

Tollefson is just a depth guy.

I don’t disagree. But I think Tollefson is going to be a big factor this year rotating in with Lamarr Houston and bringing fresh heat on passing downs. Not that I take it as some kind of slight to Tollefson, but I have him as my MUP Raider.

July 12th, 2012 at 7:48 am
Yesterday, I got flamed on all sides for throwing some mild critisism of Lamarr Houston. To be fair, I think the scheme change is going to help Houston rebound, but I think Tollefson is going to help him and help each other get max pressure on the QB. Wimbley’s departure created a void that I expect Tollefson/Houston will fill. At least I hope.

July 12th, 2012 at 8:05 am
Who cares who starts the game at DE? The game isn’t about having an entrenched starter playing every down. The Giants showed how its done. Rotating fresh bodies constantly. Tollefson’s 5 sacks as a reserve shows how he can affect a game with limited snaps. And the side product is it give Houston needed rest and lights a fire under him as well.

Yes, and I’m also expecting Burris to also be a part of that. Seems like his specialty was rushing the passer kinda like Clay Mathews (Not comparing the 2 obviously). There’s TONS of tape of Burris screaming off the end “shedding blocks” and burrying the QB. So many tackles for loss or no gain too. Great persuit.

================================================
Wishful thinking, in my opinion.
I like Houston and think he’s going to have a solid season and career.
I just don’t think he’s a very adept edge rusher and doubt he ever will be.
Doesn’t have the lithe frame or body type of the typical speed rusher.
That’s not a knock on Lamar, anymore than it would be a knock on Kam if he was expected to play DT.
I think Houston is best suited as a DT. Some say he isn’t stout enough. I disagree. I think he’s incredibly strong and can hold down the middle.
Houston has extremely good lateral pursuit. He’s got quick feet and a good burst. But he is not someone I envision as being a terribly effective edge rusher in the NFL.
The Raids absolutely need someone to emerge as an edge or speed rusher. Despite his inconsistency, KW came closest to filling that role on this team. I think you’re right on the money when you state his departure has left a void that has yet to be filled.

It would be an awesome surprise if Burris was a Clay Mathews type. All that tape though was against lesser competition. I expect it will take awhile before he passes Ro on the depth chart. It’s hard to expect much of rookies. At least Tollefson has some proven track history. I’m rooting for Burris to get his shot but am easing off any expectations. I hope that I am pleasantly surprised.

well obviously no one is going to pay him starters money as a rotational guy, right? So the salary is on par with his value. I agree that Houston may not have the body/frame to be an edge rusher. But he has value holding the edge on run plays. That’s more his bread and butter. So it’s good to have a situational pass rushing DE like Tollefson and wean off Houston’s snaps, getting better pressure and keeping Houston fresh.

But what is going to be fun for me to watch is seeing Tarver’s mad scientist mix of schemes and seeing live what the term “multiple” is reffering to. It’s all in the abstract now. I can’t visualize it. Seeing the Raids lined up differently, mixing it up. I’m sure it will cause opposing OC’s to scratch their heads wondering who this team is that looks so different from the last 5 decades.

I believe it was 1363 yds in penalties, NO our o-line is not solid, its strong yup, but to be solid they need to make fewer mistakes…
no need for a o-line man who is great in 6-7 plays and then make a fatal mistake and everything gained is lost due to penalties..
Mike Briesel is helluva a key to us having a great year on offense. But both Veldheer and Wiz needs to step up and make fewer mistakes.

Seems to me that we’re leaning heavily on improved coaching and scheme to improve the defense.
I do not discount this factor.
However, IMO there are 3 crucial things which must happen for the Defense to make a significant improvement.
1. McLame has to play better.
2. Bartell has to hold down one corner and play well.
3. An edge rusher must emerge.
Even if all three of these things happen, I still don’t see this unit as being confused with anything close to dominating (especially against the run), but I think it would be respectable.
If none of the three occur, this defense could be worse than the 2011 disaster.
All the coaching and scheming in the world won’t work if you don’t have the personnel to make it happen.

Agree with 1.
Disagree with 2. I think the scheme won’t be so much about Bartell shutting down one receiver or side. It won’t rely so much on any one guy as much as distribute the responsibilities within the scheme or play.
Sort of agree with 3. Not just one edge rusher, but multiple edge rushers must emerge. I don’t think having to rely on a one-trick pony will get us anywhere close to the consistent pressure needed to kill drives and plant QB’s in the grass. We need to be “multiple”.

Allen is known for his aggressive “bend but don’t break” defensive play calling that gives up a lot of yards, but also forces many sacks and turnovers. In 2009 in New Orleans, the Saints ranked 3rd in interceptions despite giving up 321 yards per game. Allen’s Broncos were in the bottom half of yards allowed, ranked 23rd, but were 5th in the league in sacks – WIKI

PFF graded out Wiz 2.0 as a stud guard and one of the worst centers in football.
I always said from the jump (before we drafted him) that he doesn’t have the career experience at center to be worth much of a darn there for a few years.
He has STILL not played 16 games at center, between HS, college, and the NFL.
Don’t like the on-the-job training stuff.
July 12th, 2012 at 9:03 am
I don’t read, “bend but don’t break” as something different than what Branch provides. He actually complements it. He tackles well and keeps the play between the 20s. That whole philosophy rides on making the play in the red zone. Even if Branch doesn’t make the impact plays, he’s still a huge part of Allen’s “bend/not break” defense.

I keep seeing refernces to how new schemes will help us win.
The only material differences we have from this year to last is better players. Shaugnessy, Macfadden, Tolleffson, Spencer, Bartell, Brisiel, Wheeler and a full camp for Carson is why we could have a good season.
Shell, Bresnahan, Fox, Turner, Marshall, Lance, Jackson etc. all have had success elsewhere with their schemes(Shell/Bresnahan had great success their first time with the Raiders as well) because they had good players.
Players are 80% of the game.
Guys like Sapp, Moss, Deangelo Hall, JR, Javon Walker, Warren, Wilson, etc. killed this team by stealing cap money with little or no production. Just because they made the team does not mean they should be in the NFL.
Even Nnamdi was far overpaid for what he produced. (Ask Eagle fans).
After 2002, Mr. Davis made some big mistakes, that with a salary cap, became fatal for this franchise.
Don’t be surprised to see some more “name” cuts during camp. Players must execute relative to their compensation otherwise they will be cut. (Ask Routt).
July 12th, 2012 at 9:21 am
Good post Charlie. If that is the case, then Rolando McClain should be on suicide watch.
July 12th, 2012 at 9:25 am
This is a big leap for me, because I constantly devalue the RB position, but the most important Raider next year is D-Mac.
I do devalue RB’s beause they are always hurt, rarely give you 3-4 peak years, and 90% of them can be replaced rather cheaply without much dropoff, if any.
However, Darren is part of that 10%. You can’t, or at least shouldn’t, revolve your team around a RB in today’s NFL, but you can certainly ride a hot-hand at RB for a few months and have them dominate games and bring home wins.
Darren has the ability to be the best player on the field when plays, for either team.
Few guys in this league can say that. We need him healthy if we really want to fancy ourselves as making a playoff run.
Sure we can go 8-8 with or without him, but we don’t stand a chance going 11-5 without him.
July 12th, 2012 at 9:28 am
So I am pretty much locked and loaded for that Thursday night game against the Donkeys.
Just hope Rolando is still starting and not being held in some county pookie in Alabama at that time, so I can rock the double-nickle on gameday!!!
July 12th, 2012 at 9:28 am
146. I agree but I think it boils down to we need a healthy CP3 and DMC if we want to compete for the playoffs. That’s our 2-headed monster. We lose either for an extended period, and the team could go to sleep early and not get up off the mat.
Can’t underestimate the value of CP3, but DMC has to be the team MVP if we are going anywhere.

—
An overlooked observation.
To me, it appeared our D was getting tired and worn out late in games…you know…when opposing offenses could do whatever the heck they wanted whenever they wanted and it cost us games.
With fresh guys coming in rotation it will hopefully keep guys energized enough to make some stops when we really need ‘em.

I don’t read, “bend but don’t break” as something different than what Branch provides.
============================
Totally agree. Branch will chase a guy the entire length of the field and drag him down at the 5. Then we’re forcing a field goal instead of giving up 6 on his effort alone. He’s such a sure tackler too. If he gets his hands on somebody, they’re going down.

I think in a pinch, with a healthy D-Mac and an improved defense, Terrell Pryor can run around and be athlete at help lead the wagon for a month if need be.
That’s the thing with these uber-athletes at QB (like Tebow last year) if you can keep it close and make it a one-possession game, they can run around, pick up 25 yards on a scramble and get you in FG position to win the game.
On a whole season, it won’t work. 3 minutes to go in a game, it does.

Our Oline has sucked for some time now. No names and has beens and never was’s so we take a third round rookie and not only does he start but we expect him to play two positions, one which is the hardest position to play and he has no experiance.
He is tough and smart and he loves to play fooball and scrap. And he is multitalented.A great pick in Al’s last draft.
He also has to live up to his uncle. That is not easy especially when that uncle is also the coach. Little Wiz has to work twice as hard but like the great Tom Cable once said
Iron strengthens iron and thats why little Wiz will be a pro bowler this year.
PS LMN have you no shame?

Lotta talk about the big star running back not being needed anymore to be successful.
Look at GB. Starks and Ryan Grant…average right?
NYG? Jacobs (3.8 ypc) and Bradshaw.
New Eng. Benjarvis Green-Ellis (3.8 ypc.) and Danny Woodhead?
Saints? Pierre Thomas (not a big name runner…but not bad either) and Sproles?
You look at what some of the teams with the BIG NAME gamebreakers did last yr. and you see teams like Minn. with Peterson not doing well at all..(although he was injured…by Raiders) but they weren’t going anywhere anyway.
Chris Johnson of Tenn.? They didn’t do much either.
This isn’t to say having a gamebreaker is a BAD thing but times are changing.
We DO have a gamebreaker in DMAC.
The only evidence we can glean from what a Reggie McKenzie administration will look like is what we can see from what GB has done these past yrs.
It’ll be interesting to see how much value Reggie will place in keeping DMAC around at contract time.
It would seem by looking at GB that they don’t place much importance on having the “star” gamebreaking RB..rather capable guys who can complement the all important passing game.

I’m rooting for Andy Dalton to get knocked out for the year so the Great Gradkowski can prove to the world he’s a player.
Also rooting for Cutler to get knocked out and for Jason Campbell to be exposed as a scrub.
Of course, there’s one week that Grads is going to get his butt whupped.

@DJJohnny
Its all pieces of a puzzle.
A lot of those teams that have the great RB dont have anything else.
A lot of those teams who dont have the Great RB, have great QBs or defense.
No exact science.
July 12th, 2012 at 10:04 am
I can agree from the standpoint that Carson Palmer is the most important Raider from a risk point of view. We can do without DMAC and still get by with a quality passing attack. The dropoff to the backup QB is much greater than the dropoff to backup RB.
That being said, if DMC goes down for an extended period, I doubt we can scramble to make the playoffs. He’s the centerpiece.

I ran into a young soldier here at the hospital, who is recovering from burns on his face and arms, and he happened to be wearing a Raider’s cap. He hadn’t been able to track the off-season much, for obvious reasons. I walked with the guy for a bit and filled him in on RM and DA and the new direction of the team, it was cool to see the guy smile from ear to ear. His mom walked behind us saying “you guys and your football”lol.

I wish no ill will on Soup Campbell. I hope that if he gets a chance in Chicago, he puts together his best ball and game manages them to the playoffs. Soup left it all on the field for the Raiders, and has to apologize to no one. Especially shameful is the way he was treated when Hue got his new toy in CP3. The comments Soup endured were out of line and he was a class act through it all.
Having said all that, I’m so glad he’s gone and we truly have a “real QB” in Carson Palmer.

It’d be great if we actually had to be concerned that we are scoring too quickly.
That qucik strike capability of GB with Rodgers and Co. was down right scary.
I’m crossing my fingers that alot of GB’s success was due to Reggie having alot to do with it.

July 12th, 2012 at 10:14 am
I agree with most of what is being said.
Success on defense starts with the Dline.
We still have a big problem in that area. Shaugnessey and Tollefson will help but this is an area where we have overrated players.
Kelly is not very good. Certainly not worth his salary.
Seymour is now a situational player who misses most practices. Neither came to the voluntary workouts which ought to tell us something.
Seymour and Kelly get dominated by good Olines. They completely dissappear (Seymour gets thrown out rather that suffer further embarrasment.) They pad their stats against undermanned or injured fronts. (Last years two San Diego games were perfect examples).
Mclain needs to improve as well but the DT’s need to do their jobs and they have not. Without Ngata, Ray Lewis threatened to retire.
At this moment I think our DT’s and Dmac’s health our this teams biggest concerns.

One of the things about JC that drove me nuts…
It seemed like a given that the Raids would blow a time-out or two on their first possession with him at the helm.
I’d like to blame that on Hue, but that nonsense ended immediately when Palmer stepped in.
One curiosity of the 2011 season…
Pretty early on, Palmer was running the no huddle with what appeared to be excellent command. It was almost Manningesque. All of a sudden, that facet of the offense disappeared.
Don’t know why, but we rarely saw the no huddle towards the end of the year.
Kind of baffling, isn’t it ?
