Branch talks about new contract, future

The Raiders guaranteed strong safety Tyvon Branch more than $17.1 million by converting his contract from a one-year deal to a four-year pact. On Wednesday, Branch said his peace of mind was just as important as the money.
“It gives you that (comfort) that you’re going to be around for the next couple of years,” Branch said in a conference call. “It definitely gives you a little more peace of mind. It’s just one of those things that you don’t have to worry about anymore. You know where you’re going to be.”
The Raiders placed the franchise tag on Branch early in the offseason. That guaranteed Branch slightly more than $6.2 million, or the average salary of the five highest-paid safeties last season.
That changed Saturday when the Raiders offered Branch a four-year contract, which he accepted and signed.
The transaction freed the Raiders from allotting the $6.2 million for this season’s salary cap and helped them clear almost $4 million in cap room.
Branch has started all 48 regular-season games the past three seasons. He performed at a Pro Bowl-caliber level last season, by some accounts. Even so, he said, he still hasn’t reached his potential.
“The sky’s the limit, as long as you work hard, put forth the effort and you want to become great,” Branch said. “The sky’s the limit. I’m just going to keep working and, hopefully, improve my game.”
Ultimately, Branch said, he is more concerned about helping the Raiders reach the playoffs for the first time in 10 seasons.
“I don’t really have any personal goals,” Branch said. “I just want to win. Whatever it takes to win, I’m all about winning. That’s the most important thing; whatever it’s going to take for us to get in the big dance. We want to be a part of the tournament this year, get into the playoffs.”
In other news, the Raiders still haven’t signed rookies Tony Bergstrom and Juron Criner. Those are at the forefront of general manager Reggie McKenzie’s to-do list now that he has finalized Branch’s contract.
McKenzie likely won’t have any difficulty wrapping up deals for Bergstrom and Criner. He certainly should have both contracts finished in time for the start of training camp July 29.

$60 million dollar fine is pretty heavy. It is a common misconception that these football programs PROFIT billions of dollars.

It’s the NCAA that is making all the profits and the big bulk of TV revenue (why so many conferences and some teams have came up with their own conference or team TV channel) , a lot of football programs end up running in the red for the year.

My question is, what is the NCAA going to do with the money? Add it to the coffers?

    +++++++++++

The money is to be placed in a fund that will help fund child advocacy programs.

    Morning JFB,

good to be home with families. It’s so damn crowded here. Going to be in Vegas for NFL opening day. Can’t wait. And the A’s are fun to watch again.

What they should do is identify each of the victims and divvy up that and at least another matching NCAA punitive donation and set these boys up for life.

  • Just Fire Baby

Sweet, you know where you are staying yet in Vegas?

I can’t stress enough, Las Vegas Hilton for the games. Not the Sports Book, but the theater (Barry Manilow theater).

Absolutely the 2nd best place on earth to watch games, other than at the game itself.

So who is Aaron Berry from Detroit? Any good?

  • DJ Johnny

Someone made the point that JoePa did not turn a blind eye to what was going on becuz he actually DID report it to the people who’s job it was to do something about it.

He said himself he should have done more, and he should have.

Too bad the kids who had nothing to do with any of this have to suffer, but that’s the way it goes.

Big Ten announces additional sanctions against Penn State:

Penn State will be banned from participating in the conference championship game for four years, concurrent with the NCAA’s bowl ban.

Also, the school will receive no funds from the conference’s shared bowl revenues, estimated to be about $13 million (that money will be donated to established charitable organizations in Big Ten communities dedicated to the protection of children)

That’s how I feel about the red-headed dude that saw the shower scene.

Hindsight is always 20/20, and we would like to all think that at 23 years old, we would go be a hero and beat up the guy and take the kid, but that isn’t always the case.

He went and called his dad immediately, who was not like some local insurance agent guy; he had clout in the community and in the program, and was at JoePa’s house THE VERY NEXT MORNING, pointing the finger at maybe the 2nd most prestigious name in the football program.

If JoePa and his ilk would have done something about it, red-head would have been a hero for getting the right people involved and catching a child predator. Instead it was a mass cover-up from there.

    Rockstar,

I’ve been wondering that. Now that Reg has over 5 mill. to work with.

One thought is that he’s holding on to it just in case a big name goes down in camp and he can use it to bring someone good in to replace that player.

I was kind of hoping for EJ Henderson maybe.

Red head should have talked to the press, get it out there. Some things like shower scenes you can’t “un-see”. They are with you forever. I’d not sleep at night until I did all I could to expose what was going on. It’s the only way to erase the memory of what you saw. If that’s even possible.

Exactly. McQueary should have gone straight to the police, and if the local yokels wouldn’t listen, you call the State police or even the FBI to get the ball rolling.

Paterno had the juice to make sure Sandusky was destroyed, instead he let the monster loose to harm who knows how many more children over the past decade.

I hope Joe Pa is saving a space for Sandusky right next to him in the seventh circle of hell, because he and these other fkers who did nothing all deserve the same punishment.

  • Just Fire Baby

I think it is easy for people to say that from their desk.

If you saw something, went to JoePa who clearly WAS THE LAW, and it was covered up, pretty easy to get disgruntled about it all.

He told the authorities, in Happy Valley Joe Pa is the authority, and testified against him in court.

He did what he could and I commend him for it. I GUARANTEE that there were dozens if not hundreds of other people who saw creepy stuff and never said a word about it to anyone.

What ever happened to the District Attorney that failed to indict and prosecute Sandusky after the initial Grand Jury hearings ?

If the DA had prosecuted Sandusky immediately, none of this would have been possible.

Penn State couldn’t have covered it up and harbored Sandusky. Most importantly, Sandusky wouldn’t have been able to continue to victimize children.

How the hell did Sandusky escape prosecution for so long ?

11 years ? Are you freaking kidding me ?

  • guest123

negative. I’d try to pick up EJ Henderson and Visanthe Shiancoe as priority positions of need over 2 CB’s that don’t look like upgrades over what we already have. That’s to say, non-inspiring CB depth.

  • http://www.djsulli.com/ Silverandblack666

“Exactly. McQueary should have gone straight to the police, and if the local yokels wouldn’t listen, you call the State police or even the FBI to get the ball rolling.”

The local police had already relieved complaints about Sandusky and they decided that there was no crime and instead of digging deeper as they would have for you and I they saw Sandusky as a person they wanted to protect instead of prosecute. I blame the local police for not following up on the complaint!

  • Marks hair

1929. Its easy to say from anywhere. Joepas not the LAW. I dont need his money so badly that I wouldnt go strait to the cops.. Thats some greedy sad talk from you just fire baby.

Any kin or even people with the Sandusky name should be seriously considering legally changing it. It’s gotta be hard living with that name. “Mr Sandusky, your oil change is ready!”, as you duck in the corner. That name is garbage now. I know someone whose dad got thrown in jail and he changed his name. It’s hard to live like that.

LOL at thinking some Podunk police department is going to do anything with any kind of information, without going to Joe Pa immediately first.

What McQueery did was go to the authorities. He went to the most powerful person in the area, and info GOT TO THE DA.

If everyone else would have done as much as red-head, this thing would have been handled in 1998 like it should have.

Sandusky married Dorothy “Dottie” in 1966, and together they have six adopted children. Sandusky and his wife have also served as foster parents. One of Sandusky’s sons, Jon Sandusky, is Director of Player Personnel for the Cleveland Browns.Another son, E. J. Sandusky, is an assistant football coach at West Chester University.

Matt Sandusky, adopted son and former foster child of Sandusky’s, released a statement through his attorneys saying that Sandusky had sexually molested him as a child. Matt Sandusky’s statement was released on the day the jury began deliberations in the sex abuse trial against Sandusky. -WIKI

Rio is tough because it is off the strip, basically you can only walk to the Gold Coast or the Palms (or Jaquars, lol).

If your going to stay at the Venetian, might as well pony up a few extra bucks and stay at the Palazzo. Newer rooms, much nicer.

And book early, can’t stress it enough. You can probably book a mini-suite now, for less than the price you would pay for a regular room in 2 months

Cleveland has sucked for awhile, but they are making a lot of the same stupid moves the Raiders were making the last decade. They are a franchise that is going nowhere, until a new Regime takes hold. Thankfully, we are on a new path toward greatness while Cleveland is stuck in neutral in the slow lane.
