I agree with that DAV however, we run the risk of not being solid that 20-30% if Ivey goes down. Our dline is OK with base however, I am scared of Kelly anchoring the 3-4, which is what Patton has suggested.

  101. 303Raider Says:

Ok, now let’s be realistic of our expectations. As long as the following doesn’t happen again, I think we can contend for the division:

    1) We don’t trade for a QB mid season who was retired
    2) DMAC doesn’t get hurt
    3) Our defense doesn’t give up multiple 99 yard drives
    4) we don’t break the record for penalties

Add our new coach, a full training camp, there’s no reaso we can’t win our division!

  110. r8eray Says:

    Packers released SS Charlie Peprah.
Peprah received a $50,000 workout bonus in the spring and was due only $1 million in base salary. The move is a big surprise on the first day of training camp, although Peprah missed all of OTA season with knee woes and might not have been healthy. A 14-game starter in 2011, Peprah intercepted five passes and recorded 94 tackles. The Packers may turn to M.D. Jennings at strong safety, assuming they don’t just move Charles Woodson there full time.

I’m sure Chubby Checker is looking into that.

  144. KoolKell Says:

    Opposition info:

In each of the first 49 seasons the Chiefs played in Kansas City, their fans had a wide selection of veteran players to root for. In season number 50, they won’t have that opportunity.

When they get to training camp Thursday at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, the Chiefs will have the league’s youngest roster. They are the only NFL team to begin camp with no player older than 30 years.

They have six players who are 30: quarterback Matt Cassel, offensive lineman Ryan Lilja, wide receiver Terrance Copper, defensive lineman Amon Gordon, safety Abram Elam and punter Dustin Colquitt. Other than Cassel, none of those players could be considered essential to the success of the Chiefs this year, so they will be counting on their many younger players to carry them.

“This is kind of the way it’s going in the NFL: young, fast, athletic guys,” said Copper, used by the Chiefs mainly on special teams. “It’s definitely a blessing if you can stay in the league for awhile.”

No team has embraced a youth movement like the Chiefs, but it’s difficult to say whether that’s a good thing for them or a negative. Many of the teams generally considered to have legitimate Super Bowl aspirations are heavy with players 30 and over. New England has 13, Baltimore 10 and Pittsburgh nine.

Then again, the Green Bay Packers have just four, so there’s no one way to build a Super Bowl contender.

  147. Missus Beeecham Says:

    HOLLA

  148. KoolKell Says:

Their inexperience could show up most where the Chiefs can afford it the least: on their offensive line. Winston, Lilja and Albert are veterans, but Hudson is in his first season as a starter and right guard Jon Asamoah, 24, is in his second.

“Casey brought a lot to the table,” Lilja said. “He brought an element of toughness, and that set a tone for everybody. He brought a lot of experience. He knew what was going to happen before it happened. He didn’t get surprised out there. He can still play, so having him gone hurts.

“But he was here for two years, and he rubbed off on guys. We’ve got a good group in the offensive line room. We don’t have a ton of experience. It’s a young room now. But that’s just the nature of the business.”

The Chiefs last year lost two of their leaders when Vrabel retired and guard Brian Waters was released. This year, two more are out. Jones and Wiegmann became free agents, and the Chiefs didn’t re-sign them.

The season might hinge on whether the Chiefs can find players willing to take their place in the locker room. After drafting plenty of players who were captains of their college teams, they have several candidates.

But leading a group of pros is a big step, and it’s this kind of thing that can keep a coach tossing and turning at night. So Crennel, before the Chiefs finished offseason practice last month, was already compiling a list.

“Matt Cassel, by the nature of being the quarterback, is a leader,” Crennel said. “Eric Winston is going to be a leader. Steve Breaston is a quiet leader. I think Boss is going to be a leader in a quiet way. So we have some guys who have some experience, and they know about winning and how a team should be run, and they’ll be able to help the young guys we have.”

    I disagree.

We need a vet MIKE/MLB to show these young kids the ropes in that LB corp and lead them and teach them how to be pros. EJ HENDERSON would be a good pickup IMO.

I also think Cedric Benson would be a good pickup on the cheap as well.

Man all that talk about the Gravy Hut is making me hungry.

I used to own (with some partners) a restaurant that had a bad reputation. It was nicknamed the Scarf and Barf but featured a one of a kind burger. A horse meat and horse raddish special. Most folks wouldn’t eat it but there was some clientele that would drive a hundred miles for it. Eventually the health department shut us down.

Now we are just about to finance a Slow Food drive thru (as opposed to fast food). You drive up, place your order and wait 30 minutes. Weather or not the wait is worth it we won’t know, but we will cook your food slow, and without all the nasty fire retardants and preservatives that go into tube food. While you wait for your food you can go to the ‘drive in’ feature. Watch a movie just like the drive in theatres that are slowly being torn down around the country. All the movie features will be our own choice.

But I’ll be at all the Raidah games and come Nawleens time, we will be closed for business.

Pryor has chance of winning more games than these losers! Then kicking HueJack to the curb, to bring in an enemy coach from the Broncos also may hurt us. Dream big again but fail. The one takeaway from Cork’s chat was that the REGGIE had set up a late starting camp to set back and wait for other’s camps to shed some players to the free agent market for him to grab them cheap. Interesting way to run business, but it may lead to an opportunistic signing. Still upset that we didn’t go after a TE like Shiancoe when we had a chance. By the time our camp starts, it wouldn’t surprise to see at least some major injury in another teams camp.

  207. Just Fire Baby Says:

Was watching the Carson Palmer, ESPN piece and wanted to see if anyone else noticed one thing.

Early they were asking him about how difficult last year was or whatever, and they show a quick sideline shot of him, Hue and Kyle Boller.

And Boller is looking like he is trying to help him with some playcalls, and gives him the international “smoking a joint” sign, TWICE!!!!

Was that Hue Jackson’s audible at the LOS signal?

“Blue, 27, urkle purple, set go!!”

  208. guest123 Says:

As a rule, I avoid ESPN like the plague, so I didn’t see that Carson Palmer highlight. Still I doubt that Hue and Boller were using pothead audible signals. That’s too bizzare.

I saw it. I thought he might have been picking hair out of his teeth. But who knows, the whole team seemed a little off last year.

  210. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Not buzzed. Stoned.

Glassy eyed, stupid grin, forgetting what he said at the beginning of a sentence before he got to the end stoned.

Hey, if you’re gonna get high during games, at least do a drug that’ll make you a violent maniac.

    Interesting on Wiz.

So all those calls for how great it was to have Rod Wood, Biekert and Steve Wiz on the staff were a tad premature last year.

Neither one stuck around or made any impact.

  221. GG Says:

Former Oakland Raiders cornerback Skip Thomas has died. He died of a heart attack during the weekend.

Thomas played for the Raiders from 1972-77. He was an underrated part of a glamorous secondary in Oakland during its 1970s heyday. Nicknamed “Dr. Death,” Thomas was a terrific cornerback who hit hard. Off the field, he was a key fabric of the wild Raiders of that era and was known for being a major-league character. He was a favorite of Oakland coach John Madden. Thomas was 61.

Our condolences go out to Thomas’ family and to the Raiders.

  222. guest123 Says:

Wonder why the shakeup just a couple days away from start of camp? This can’t be spun as a good thing. Some behind the scenes drama to be certain. I don’t think it’s a reflection on Wiz 2 perse, but I also think that nobody has really discussed the fact he’s coming off surgery and still in process of recovery.

The O-line becomes a questionmark now, and a greater concern today with Wiz leaving.

  223. Just Fire Baby Says:

I thank Steve for being a loyal Raider, but he was an asst line coach, without much playing experience in the ZBS, and without much coaching experience in general.

Losing Sanjay Lal will have a greater impact on this team than Steve Wiz.

    Too bad for Wiz.

    No time for distractions though.

  228. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

Used to get a kick out of people here blasting Sanjay Lal’s coaching ability.

As if they ever saw him in action or had any idea what he was about.

I tend to think it has something to do with his name.

Granted, watching Raider WRs colliding and tripping over each other when lined up on the same side, and balls deflecting off of DHB’s hands wasn’t exactly confidence inspiring – but the truth is no one here knows how much of that is attributable to a coaching deficiency or what Lal’s true worth was.

Lal landed another job with ease, so there’s reason to suspect that people that actually know something had a good opinion of him.

  229. Just Fire Baby Says:

Lal should get tons of credit for having J Ford and D Moore ready as rookies to contribute.

Lou Murph for that matter as well.

  230. Bob Marley Says:

RIP Skip Thomas, part of the “Soul Patrol” and Raider tradition.

“…they were one of the most physical, most dominant, meanest, roughest, toughest defenses in football.

Wille Brown was an All-AFL and Pro Bowl cornerback who played in a backfield known as “The Soul Patrol,” a secondary that included safeties Jack Tatum and George Atkinson and that inspired fear in anyone who dared to cross the middle of the field.

Tatum was known as “The Assassin.”
    Atkinson was “The Hit Man.”
Cornerback Skip Thomas was “Dr. Death.”

And receivers weren’t so much opponents who had to be stopped as targets to be erased.”

  231. J Hill Says:

Lal was directly tied to DHB as far as the haters go.

Murphy too. A LOT of drops, half efforts, and fumbles from that guy.

  232. J Hill Says:

JLH and his dinginess, lol ….

  233. hwnrdr Says:

    Good Post Bob!
RIP Dr Death! That Soul Patrol was something to watch!

  234. guest123 Says:

I gotta give a lot of credit to Lal for DHB. He got a lot better from year to year. Still a lot of flaws in his game, but Lal was able to minimize them.

  235. hwnrdr Says:

Is that true about Wiz? I wonder why so close to TC?

  236. Bob Marley Says:

As far a Old Wiz, probably lacked chemistry with Frank Pollack and decided to leave, good luck to Steve, he coached at Stanford before coming here, I’m sure he’ll find a job soon, maybe across the Bay with Jim Harbaugh…uuughh.

  237. guest123 Says:

I could see him having issues with Pollack too. Especially trying to adapt to the new blocking scheme. Didn’t Wiz have to re-interview for the asst line coach job? Why didn’t they identify the expected changes and decide to make the decision back then? This is really late in the preseason to make a change like this. But he’s just an asst, and those are easily replaceable.

  238. Dakota Says:

    LET’S GO RAAAAAAAAAAAIDERS!

  239. r8eray Says:

Just checked the Raiders Coach Roster, I still see Steve as our Assistant O-line Coach!

BTW..I believe he could kick Frank’s @$$ with no problem!!

  240. Dakota Says:

The Raiders have hit reset and the future is finally looking bright!

Being a fan for the past 27 years has been frustrating. Mainly because I have wanted our “GM” fired for the past 20 years….I really wish Al would have let go of the GM duties and just let someone else make the calls while he just cut the check….I think that would have been a winning combination; a GM who had a clue plus an owner who was willing to spend every dime to win.

Alas, over the years I grew to understand that Al Davis would rather lose doing it his own way than sit back and watch someone else get the credit for the Raiders getting turned around. I understand that position, I just wish he had done what was right for the team and let go of the areas he could no longer handle.

But now Reggie is up to bat, and so far I like what I see. The only move that really has me scratching my head was the Knapp hiring, but that was most likely Dennis Allen’s call, so I can’t complain about a HC getting a voice in his coordinators since I had wanted Al Davis to do the same thing in the past.

No pick and no salary cap room, so my hope is that our improvement comes directly from having a GM and HC that can now hold the players accountable without interference from above. I think it could happen.

    Limited injuries = 10-6 baby!

  243. Just Fire Baby Says:

Wall Street poll had a 9% swing to more registered democrats than Repubs polled.

Which, if you actually read the Wall Street Journal article, it clearly states that.

  245. hwnrdr Says:

If Reggie believes, I will believe! So close the last couple years…yes, new coaching staff and a lot of unproven…but, LET’S GO RAIDERS!!!

  246. Just Fire Baby Says:

So when you read that article on MSNBC, and where it asks to read the poll here, did you?

    Here are the people polled:

    Strong Democrat 24
    Not very strong Democrat 11
    Independent/lean Democrat 11
    Strictly Independent 16
    Independent/lean Republican 12
    Not very strong Republican 7
    Strong Republican 16
    Other (VOL) 2
    Not sure 1

    ********************************

    So it was a poll of 46 D’s, 35 R’s, 16 indie’s and 3 not sure.

  247. Sullivan44 Says:

No poll is entirely accurate, JFB. They all have margins of error. If this had gone the other way, you and MB would be jumping in joy and bragging about it all morning. If The President is doing such a horrible job, Romney should be polling a lot better. Romney is simply unlikeable.

  248. Sullivan44 Says:

A lot of strong Republicans call themselves independent, because they really think they are independent, because they’re retarded. The poll’s accurate. Suck it, JFB.

  249. theghostronin79 Says:

Yep. For the first time In “feels like forever”, I feel some actual confidence. No Kool-aid, just pure certainty that we’re on the right track. I’m not expecting the Super Bowl. But I expect the team and the organization to be better this year than last year, and I believe this marks the spot of our rise back to relevance. We’ll continue to improve and be amongst the usual suspects in the playoff picture and SB conversation in the coming years.

  250. Just Fire Baby Says:

So if every R and D polled along party lines, of the 19 “Independents and unsures”, 3 went to BO, 8 to Romeny, and 8 undecided still.

    Great news for Mitt.

  251. Just Fire Baby Says:

If this had gone the other way, you and MB would be jumping in joy and bragging about it all morning.

    **************************

Well Rasmussen does the opposite and has Mitt running at about a 4-5 lead for months now, do you ever hear me talking about it?

I stick to Gallup, clearly the leader in polls, and they have it as a toss-up, and that’s what it is.

  252. Sullivan44 Says:

JFB, a lot of republicans call themselves independent, like you for instance. That’s your guys’ big thing now. Part of that tea party movement I guess. Walks like a duck quacks like a duck. Suck it. President leads Romney big time.

  253. guest123 Says:

It appears Charles Woodson’s much-discussed position change is happening. The 15-year veteran lined up at safety with Green Bay’s base unit to open training camp on Thursday, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The release of Charlie Peprah on Wednesday by the Packers makes more sense now. Peprah started 15 games last year, but wasn’t that effective and he underwent knee surgery this offseason.

The Packers will likely tell us that Woodson’s role might not really be changing much. He already played some safety from the slot in the team’s “Corner Okie” package.

Cork has never been all that great at predictions. Remember the ‘Boss will have a better year than Miller’ talk? Another Cork special…

  300. DJ Johnny Says:

Wow. 4th place in the west?

If Raiders win the division he’ll never hear the end of it.

Maybe he’s mad at the Raiders for making him look bad with the SD prediction.

  301. guest123 Says:

I don’t think even Indy, Jacksonville or Miami, Cleveland, Tampa, or Miami beatwriters would come out with a prediction for last place, as a pre-season prediction.

  302. theghostronin79 Says:

The hater line is getting awfully long. I love it. All pressure on the Donks.

    =====================
OH YEAH…..The pressure fell on them the SECOND Manning stepped in the building. Expectations just blasted through the roof. Anything less than conference Championship for them is gonna be a total loss.
Burn Baby BURN…… I think the Donks will not live up.
And the Raiders will leave alot of teams going “WTF just happened? I thought we were supposed to be playing the Raiders today, and we just got our A$$es Pounded.”

  303. DJ Johnny Says:

By predicting us to be 4th, Cork is basically saying the Raiders suck…period.

On the next chat he should be hammered with questions asking him to explain WHY?…since this is what he really thinks.

No more BS of “well the division is wide open and sure the Raiders can win”. No…tell us all the reasons we suck and don’t sugarcoat it for us.

He’s an unbiased writer so give it to us.

  304. The Big Banana Says:

Why do you guys get so worked up over predictions? Let them drink up that hater-aid and enjoy the fact that nobody will be expecting anything from our Raiders.

  305. guest123 Says:

Well said DJ Johnny, Cork’s a hater if he can’t back up his comment with some objective analysis.

  306. DennisAllensVisor Says:

Does it really matter what Steve Corkran picked us to finish?

    Honestly?

  307. DennisAllensVisor Says:

If he picked us to take 1st you guys would be saying how credible he is…

  308. theghostronin79 Says:

Remember everyone getting all Butt Sore when Jerry would predict 5-6 wins at best? Everyone called him a hater but, at least he called it as he saw it with US too. We don’t need to be “Fluffed”. Just be consistent.

  309. guest123 Says:

Why do you guys get so worked up over predictions?

No reason to get worked up if the predictions followed a line of analysis that is consistent. One day earlier in a chat, he tells us we can compete for the division, with it being so “wide-open”, the next we get a report from the same man telling the world we’ll finish dead last. Wow! I’m not upset at the prediciton so much as he should be more consistent. If he wants to blast the Raiders, go on record and give us a bullet list that explains why the 2012 Raiders will suck. That too much to ask?

  310. theghostronin79 Says:

If he picked us to take 1st you guys would be saying how credible he is…

    ==================

I don’t think that’s the deal honestly. It’s more that he tells us one thing, then goes and says another. That’s the credibility part. Not that he’s gonna pick us to win it all like a Nation Homer or something. Just shoulda been telling us from the jump, that he didn’t expect much from this years team.

  311. The Big Banana Says:

Motivation often plays a big role in the NFL. Be happy that all the ‘analysts’ expect the Raiders to suck. All pressure on Denver.

  312. r8eray Says:

This is a pretty big story…or not. If he left for “personal” issues or a big rift with Reggie and/or DA.

It could be an issue with working with Pollack. Or…maybe he hates the new “scheme”?

Hope we get some insight on this.

  315. The Big Banana Says:

@Guest #321. Maybe Cork does think its wide open but someone still has to finish last. Perhaps he feels all the West teams will hover around .500 with the Raiders barely finishing last. Doesn’t mean he thinks we’ll be 4-12.

Steve Wisniewski is no longer a coach with the Oakland Raiders.

A source close to the situation confirmed a tweet from Pat Kirwan of CBS Sports that Wisniewski is no longer the assistant offensive line coach with Oakland. He was going to assist new offensive line coach Frank Pollack. The Raiders are moving to a zone-blocking scheme. Wisniewski was the assistant offensive line coach in Oakland last year and he was considered a bright, young coach.

The source said Wisniewski decided not to coach because he wants spend more time with his family. NFL coaches work upward of 100 hours a week.

Wisniewski, a former Raiders offensive lineman, is expected to work with the Raiders is a lesser capacity, perhaps in a game-day role. Thus, his strong relationship with the team is intact.

His departure from the staff should not impact his nephew, Oakland center Stefen Wisniewski at all. He was a standout at guard as a rookie. He is transitioning to center. The source said Stefen Wisniewski understood his uncle’s decision.

When asked about the Raider chances, all he’s ever said is the division is wide open and the Raids should be in the thick of things.

I’d be willing to bet he figures the Raids to be around 7-9, and that might very well have them in the thick of things all season, while finishing 4th.

You want to blast Corky ?

Blast him for never breaking a story.
Blast him for mistakes like ‘DHB is the 6th best WR on the roster’ or ‘Oakland will destroy SD week 17, the Bolts have mailed it in’.

Most of all, blast him for not regularly updating this blog in order to keep the comment count reasonable. We’ve seen plenty of instances of days without a post from Steve and the comment count exceeding 2k.

Uh…Skip Thomas died a year ago. What’s with this breaking news stuff?

Anyhow, speaking of Skip, If anyone ever gets a copy of actual SB 11 telecast, watch when they show a picture of “Dr Death” Skip Thomas, looking like Dru Down with long permed hair. lol. He’s got stunnas on and his head is tilted, too. Just mean muggin. This is 1977! I could just see him and Tatum kicking it in the town.

    =============================================

Hue was really put in a weird position. In the history of the NFL, what other head coach has suddenly gained control of an entire franchise midway through a season? Too bad he let it go his head like he did.

Hue is confident in his abilities as any coach worth his salt would be.

Nobody seems to give the guy any credit.

1st ever HC gig. All the injuries, losing his boss midseason, his best player (DMAC), his starting QB, his top receivers, and he STILL manages to come away w/out a losing record and guys wanna roast him as a “pimp” and bascially an incompetant boob.

I know i know, if he was so wonderful how come he’s at Cincinnati as a d-backs asst?

Did he make some bad decisions??? Heck yes, but

  429. DJ Johnny Says:

… i’ve seen coaches with 10 yrs. or more under their belt make real bad ones too.

Oh well. We move on confidently with DA.
