An Al Davis tradition lives on _ Raiders in Napa

Here’s a sneak preview of some Sunday stuff for print which has already been posted on-line . . .

Raiders embark on first camp without Al Davis

Five questions for training camp

Training camp facts

Training camp roster/depth chart

Note: Neglected to post this earlier, but NFL Network reporting third-round pick Tony Bergstrom is locked up. You can expect the same for fifth-rounder Juron Criner, to be announced either Sunday or Monday.

For anyone who thought either wouldn’t be there for Day 1 . . . you worry too much.

The schedule for this weekend: players begin rolling in Saturday, they’ll be buried in meetings Sunday and the first practice (in pads) will be Monday morning. No “dress rehearsal” walk-throughs to get thing started. Thank goodness.

    Awwww…

Don’t be like that JFB, lol!

  • Just Fire Baby

Well it was obvious HanRan hasn’t played much meaningful baseball in his time.

You can pose a little at the plate, and go all crazy after you touch home plate.

You don’t make stupid little gestures when you are rounding 2nd.

I’m sure Donny Baseball didn’t like that too much either.

  • J Hill

You’re acting like he went all Tom Howard on y’all.

The guy is new to a team, and helped them get a big win.

    Relax Gigantes already.

  • Just Fire Baby

You’re acting like he went all Tom Howard on y’all.

    **********************

I don’t think I have EVER seen a guy in his home run trot (that was not a walkoff), start celebrating at 2nd base.

This is NL West baseball. Teams drill you, or a teammate to get the dugouts attention, for that stuff.

  • Just Fire Baby

But if they do retaliate, they will probably do it on Sunday.

  • Just Fire Baby

    No dress rehearsals, lol.

I see what Cable was trying to do, but it didn’t work.

    35. We will be a base 4-3. We’ll probably be in 4-2 & 3-3 nickels more than our 3-4..

    42. I guess your not into the new era huh?

Disagree about the 3-4. We wouldn’t have asked Seymour to drop 15 pounds to play 3-4 DE only to use it as a gimmick. I’m thinking it could be as much as 50/50 this year.

As for “Dcraiderfan,” he’s a hater. ‘Nuff said.

  • Marks hair

Dress rehersals… thats like admiting we’re gonna stink day 1.. Should have tossed the whole season to grab the #1 pick again.. Cable guy. Lame

  • Just Fire Baby

The way I look at it, is we have waaaaay more depth and talent on the D-line as opposed to our LB’s.

So why on earth would we favor a defense (the 3-4) that takes a D-lineman off the field and replace him with a LB?

It’s like saying we are going to take TK, or Houston, or Seymour off the field, and replace him with Burris (if were lucky and have no injuries) or maybe Goethel.

We will switch to a 3-4 look in time, once we get our LB unit up to snuff.

I’m worried especially about the OL. Good news to see Bergstrom signed.

    ***

the OL held up pretty well last year, but I can see the reason for your concern

    1. moving to a strict zbs
    2. Wylie & Wiz out as coaches
    3. Barnes retained at RT
    4. Wiz moved from LG to C
    5. Carlisle moved from RG to LG

I thought Cable was a decent coach actually. He DID help take a 5-11 team and bring us back to some semblance of respectability.

He got made fun of for his appearence and his belly hanging out and some of his thatrical antics on the sideline.

I remember a friend saying Cable was “cute” with his pudgy neck and face and the way he rejoiced after a win or big play.

Problem is that friend who said that is a guy. He was trying to be funny. He said “Awwwww, he’s so cute”.

As a Raider fan do I respond negatively to that or give him an awkward “thank you”?

  • Just Fire Baby

Cable would have found a way to make the playoffs last year, IMO.

  • Marks hair

    62. Exactly.. We have no nt, and our lbs dont fit the 3-4 olb description.. Plus why whould you want gothel on the field over bryant or houston? Not to mention the opposition will put us into nickel defenses because our dbs are weak..

  • Marks hair

Wow he took a 5-11 team all the way up to 8-8 in only 2 seasons!! Quick lets rehire the cable guy! What an amazing coach!

  • Just Fire Baby

I like the idea of being creative (especially on 3rd downs), and no doubt we will see some 3-4 looks.

But anywhere close to 50/50, I just don’t see it.

    Not this year.

  • Marks hair

We will play a tad of 3-4 this yr to change the culture & teach it to the team.. But eventually we’ll just play our best guys in their best spots..

    ………………………………………………

You damn right he would of. Cable was not a pretty boy. He didn’t care how he looked or dressed or if he had dirt underneath his fingernails.

Damn, so close and so far.

  • http://www.raiders.com Raider O

    Cable?!?! Really???????
The guy was 6-0 in the division, and still managed to finish 8-8?!?!
I’m glad we fired that fat monkey.

  • http://www.GodIsImaginary.com RaiderDuck

Allen and Tarver may feel that between Ivey, Kelly and whomever else, we’ve got enough guys to be OK at nose tackle.

Who knows? We could see some Shaughnessy at 3-4 OLB, like Mario Williams in Houston last year. In this scenario, we’d have Seymour and Bryant at 5-technique DE.

  • fingers

Raiderssssss…. Getting closer to knock’n the snot outta the Chokers and Philip Rivers…

  • Marks hair

    71. Right?? How quickly they forget..

  • Marks hair

Snessy is not an olb.. Pls no more of that.. M.williams is a special player. And even he’s going back to end where he belongs..

  • Just Fire Baby

The guy was 6-0 in the division, and still managed to finish 8-8?!?!

    *******************************

The guy who replaced him went 8-8 and still managed to go 3-3 in the division, including 0-3 at home in his division.

  • Just Win Baby

Kyle Boller camp fodder in San Diego now – too funny.

    76. The guy who replaced the cable guy sucked too..

    ***********************

Agreed, I just think Cable sucked a tad bit less, which was my original point, that Cable would have found a way to weasle out one extra game last year.

Cable’s teams got better down the stretch of seasons, and Hue’s imploded and fell apart.

  • Marks hair

    81. Yeah but cable guy would have just blown some other game so that the strech didnt even matter. Neither guy was qualified or ready for the job.. Hue had some offensive knowlege.. Cable got guys to play hard. But thats about it..

New era, im excited about DA. He seems like a good egg, smart.. And reg will give him time to grow. I dont expect a 1 or 2 yr hc this time..

  • Marks hair

Plus I hear DA doesnt beat his wife or employees

  • http://www.raiders.com Raider O

    MH,

Why can’t Shaughnessy play OLB in 3-4, if he is only asked to rush the passer or hold the edge? As long as he is not dropping in coverage, I think he can do it.

YO HO HO AND A BOTTLE OF WINE

after i booted that ex old man of mine outta the trailer, i did have an eye for the cable man, but i met holla, my girlfriend. we entertain guests and drink gallo wine. we aint got nuthin to hide.

    BIZZLE ZIZZLE DUECE AND GRIZZLE

  • Just Win Baby

Just remembered whyI quit reading the posts.

  • Marks hair

If all hes doing is stand up rushing all yr long, then its still just a 4-3. he has to play lb like a real lb if its a 3-4.. Your describing a shift of the dl to move nasty into a stand up stance, but the d will catch on that he cant & wont ever cover anybody..

  • cranium68

2 weeks and we get to see what some of these rooks can do. Can’t wait! It’ll be fun to see Leinart tossing it to Criner and Streater and to see what TP can do. I am ready!

  • CanuckRaider

#89: Yep…Remember how well trying to make Brayton and that other big guy outside linebackers worked?…LMAO.

  • Marks hair

I meant the o will catch on.. Not the d.

  • Marks hair

Lol lienhert tossing lobs into double coverage only to be stolen by criner you mean..

  • CanuckRaider

Any competent QB would pop an instant woodie seeing a defensive lineman at OLB.

    =======================================

That was because Rob Ryan had Brayton and Irons (try to) play standard OLB, as opposed to Allen and Tarver who understand you can’t do that.

  • CanuckRaider

Sure hope two of Criner, Streater and Carrier can crack the roster…Big red zone targets are sweet.

  • Marks hair

I cant wait to see t.jones tear up the preseason..

  • CanuckRaider

That was the guy…Irons…And that was embarrasing to say the least.

  • Marks hair

    95. They do understand. Which is why nasty wont be playing and olb.. He plays end

  • CanuckRaider

Hopefully Jones is ready to step up and can stay healthy…Could be quite the weapon with that speed.
