Bergstrom had no intention of being late

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, July 28th, 2012 at 2:34 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Tony Bergstrom didn’t put pen to paper until 10:07 p.m. the previous night, but his arrival at Raiders’ training Sunday was a foregone conclusion.

“It was hashed out a long time ago,’’ Bergstrom said after stepping off one of two busses arriving from the club facility in Alameda. “I’m an old school guy. I like to do things in person, and I think that kind of fits in well with our organization. It was basically just getting out here and signing.’’

Bergstrom also added, “I’m not about to be the first holdout of the new CBA as a third-rounder.’’

According to ESPN, that honor could belong to Juron Criner a fifth-round pick, who reportedly wants a signing bonus of $158,000 instead of the $144,000 the club is offering.

Criner was a standout in some OTA sessions during the offseason.

Criner’s performance was one of the reasons the Raiders felt comfortable dealing three-year veteran wide receiver Louis Murphy for a conditional draft pick.

Bergstrom was happy to get off the bus, which was held up in traffic near the Discovery Kingdom amusement park in Vallejo. Bus passengers were mostly rookies and undrafted free agents, with veterans filtering in throughout the day in their own vehicles.

“I think everybody kind of got on with a nervous tension, then about 20 minutes into the bus ride everybody was just kind of wanting to get off the bus,’’ Bergstrom said.

The Raiders check in to their rooms and undergo preliminary physical examinations as well as meet Sunday before practicing for the first time Monday morning.

“I kind of like to just get after it. I kind of figure you learn swimming by being tossed into the water. That’s generally what happens,’’ Bergstrom said.

– Veterans are filtering in slowly. One of the first arrivals was place kicker Sebastian Janikowski, who arrived toting a set of clubs over his shoulder in a priceless Raiders Twitter photo which illustrated the life of a kicker in training camp.

    One idiot calls Criner a Diva, and You People assume he is one.
    The man is trying to get an additional 10%, it’s not like he is asking for 2nd round money, and that makes him a diva?
    ================================================

    Raider HO you are not much on thinking are you? There are 12 count them, 12 players in the ENTIRE DRAFT that are currently unsigned. One is a third rounder the rest are all lst and 2nd rounders. Then there is a 6th rounder. Criner. You can’t even really call him a 5th rounder because the 5th round came and went and he wasn’t taken. Why don’t you encourage him to hold out for lst rounder money since basically the ones left.

    That’s exactly what Reggie’s offering, and is in line with the NFL slotting system. Criner is being unreasonable.

    Again, there were two players drafted as 5th round comp picks, right behind Criner.

    They both signed 2 months ago, and were on the bus ride with the rest of the rookies going into camp. Criner already missed that.

    I don’t know if he is a “diva” or “prima donna” on the whole, but in this case, he sure is acting like one.

    There’s a few problems with this. lst off, he hasn’t proven anything to dictate he shouldn’t sign and get his ass into camp. 2ndly, he is not coming off well with the fans or organiztion at this point. And lastly, we traded our best receiver in 2 of the last 3 years for a conditional pick to make room for a guy who isn’t showing up. None of that is good.

    ==================================

    It is to some extent tho. Basically the way the league looks at compensatory picks is that they are paid more like the next round down than the one they are selected. In other words those compensatory players have to take a bit of a kick. Criner doesn’t want to do that. There’s your stalemate.

    Both Asa Jackson and Vick Ballard, the two other 5th round comp picks selected after Criner, got 144K on their signing bonus. And George Iloka, taken with the last pick of the regular 5th round, got 160K.

    So basically, Criner is completely off his rocker.

    ====================================

    I doubt that’s the case but if it is, Criner should fire the agent immediately. Criner’s paying the agent to represent HIM, not be some kind of tenth-rate Moses (”Let My Wideouts Go!”).

  109. Goldie7 Says:

    My bad Duck. You’re absolutely correct….Criner and his agent are being jerks. Anyway…I’m hoping it all ends well because we are surely weak in the WRs position. No doubt about it…Criner does not need to start out in the NFL being a diva. I also hope… Reggie is not a cheap paying GM and doesn’t want to pay the players especially if they have proven themselves..

  110. Marks hair Says:

    97. he’s not going to yell at anybody. he’s gonna wait until the last minute hoping reggie will do him right. and when reggie doesent, criner will sign.. And we come out heros to cheapskates everywhere..

    Given that we signed Wheeler, Brisiel and others to market-level deals, I don’t anticipate any issues on that front.

    How do we look like cheapskate when all we are doing is following the guidelines set by the CBA and was followed by every other team in the league?

    Criner will sign and be in camp but it’s been fun discussing his situation.

  119. Marks hair Says:

    113. Because the new cba is unfair to the comp picks.. He’s asking reg to pay him as #168. Instead of *168 comp pick.. The difference is only 14k. Nothing to us. A lot to the kid…

    Dont worry baby ill fix your face up. Pick 168 should get 158k.. Oh no! Since im a comp pick I get the hose again? 14k short? But her face man! Butterface!

  147. Plunketthead Says:

    My point is Jerry>Steve

  148. Raideraholic (AKAHairyBush) Says:

    It’s really quite simple-

    Until you have proven to be an elite NFL player (not college) you have NO right to even consider holding out imo.

  149. Plunketthead Says:

    So what are the odds of DMAC making it through the preseason uninjured?

    I would say it is a tossup 50-50

  150. TxRaider210 Says:

    Should be a simple concept. I’m out Raider on fellas!

  151. Raideraholic (AKAHairyBush) Says:

    If I were an NFL rookie, I couldn’t imagine being so stupid thinking 14k is worth possibly getting on the bad side of the guy who makes your contract and perhaps the HC who decides how much playing time you get. As someone stated earlier, it’s all about proving yourself and landing that monster 2nd contract. I guess Criner didn’t get the memo.

    I think DMAC will be used like Tomlinson was used in previous preseasons with the Chargers. Maybe a little more, but not much.

  153. Raid uh Max Says:

    Agent: Hey, Criner baby! What do I owe the
    Pleasure of this call?

    Criner: Hey I’ve been reading this blog online
    And they’ve been talking about how I
    Haven’t signed yet, some saying they
    Think im gonna hold out. I mean if I was
    The best receiver at camp like they say,
    Couldn’t I get more money if I did hold out?

    Agent: Your right, I could probably get your signing
    Bonus up a little, ah…………. Say about… Up
    To 158,000.

  154. Plunketthead Says:

    I am not worried about him getting hurt in a preseason game. He is more likely to tweak something minor and miss time. He is not the type to bite the bullet and play through injury. If something does not feel 100% right, he will shut it down till opening day

  155. Intrepid Says:

    ==============================================

    Thank you! We can see from this matrix that Criner is set to make a cool one mil over the next two years. Somehow I don’t think $14K is going to break him.

  157. number one fan Says:

    Cant Criner see what holding out did to Jamarcus. Maybe Jamarcus could step up and give Criner a call and let him know not to listen to the greedy agent, and holding out retards your learning curve and missing all that camp time is not good, specially since it hurt Jamarcus’ game. Holding out is not for the new era of Raider football. F that.

  158. Raid uh Max Says:

    I think the teams should band together and make a commitment to fire these players who do this and make an agreement no other teams will pick him up. Ever. Make an example out of a few players and it will NEVER happen again.
