Criner not signing contract over $14,000

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, July 28th, 2012 at 12:28 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Rookie wide receiver Juron Criner and the Raiders are $14,000 apart on the signing bonus portion of his contract, according to an ESPN report. Not a lot of money but apparently enough to keep Criner away from training camp in Napa.
The report said the Raiders are offering Criner a $144,000 signing bonus, which is in line with where he was drafted in April. However, Criner’s camp is pushing for $158,000, or $2,000 less than the player picked right before Criner. Such a drop in bonus money is the norm for players picked in the fifth round. Yet, the NFL Management Council calls for players taken with compensatory selections to drop more than the norm.
Criner is the only player on the Raiders roster not under contract. They already have signed five of their six draftees. The first practice is Monday.
The ESPN report cited the source as saying Criner “likely” won’t sign a contract until the matter is resolved.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen isn’t available to the media until Sunday afternoon. Criner could not be reached for comment.

Wow! Is that true? Big Reggie missed out on the character screening issue big time. Potential headache midway through his contract.

  2. Just Fire Baby Says:

Talk about jumping over a $20 to grab a $5.

14K after taxes and agent fee’s and union dues, insurance, etc, is probably around half of that.

All these guys, be it top 10 picks or 5th rounders, need to get their azz in camp, in the good graces of the organization, and try to get to that BIG payday, which is your 2nd NFL contract.

The Reggie has spoken, and he will not give in, nor should he. He folds, and it has a domino effect league-wide.

  3. Raiderbuck Says:

Maybe we could all chip in and get him signed?

Great point. I think Reggie should give it to him. He is not asking for much, and he is not asking for 3rd or 4th round money.
    Pay the man!!
    ===========================================

You can’t just “pay the man”. It’s not about 14 grrr. There is a new system in place that pays new players according to their draft slot status. As soon as one team ignores that it sets a precedent, and then all bets are off and players can start screwing around and demanding whatever they want even tho they have not played a down which is what the league is trying to stop. Don’t be a dummass.

  5. Raider O Says:

    Dave,

It happens, so don’t let it bother you.
Remember: you have AC, net customers, and the receptionist is taking care of you. It can’t get any better. Luck bastard!

Criner will fold by tomorrow, and try to save face and get to work.

He looks like he has diva written all over him.He was a 6th round pick and so many are fawning all over the guy because Corkran says he was the OTA standout.Well, for what it’s worth, last season the guy Corkran insisted was the best WR on the team during training camp didn’t even last the whole season on the team and when he was on the team he barely saw the field.

    ==========================================

His leverage is to completely sit out the year. On some level he could get drafted next year higher than the top of the 6th round based on his mini camp production. But it is a gamble. A big gamble. Better just to sign and start producing.

  14. TxRaider210 Says:

Nope. There is a slotting system in place that should be followed. Let Criner prove he’s worth a second contract.

  18. TxRaider210 Says:

Since Reg is standing firm on this, makes me believe the best players will be on the field this year.

  19. Seymour Bush Says:

Running back Michael Bush could certainly be an every-down back, proving it by running for 839 yards in the final ten games with the Oakland Raiders last season. The Chicago Bears were sold on Bush’s ability, signing him to a four-year, $14 million contract in March as an insurance policy in case Matt Forte’s contract stalemate lingered into the season.

Forte was signed a multiyear deal, which means that Bush will be used as a complementary back. At 6-foot-1 and 245 pounds, Bush can expect to do a lot of the dirty work, a role he’s not exactly thrilled about filling.

“That’s the role I’ve been stuck with because of my size. But if that’s what I have to do, that’s what I have to do,” Bush said, via the Chicago Tribune. “No one likes to be a battering ram. It just happens that way.”

And once again, here is Mike Bush crying about his supposed role in Chicago.

  20. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

  21. RaiderDuck Says:

Exactly. This is the new system designed to get everyone in line and in camp quickly and efficiently, especially higher round guys and apparently it worked pretty well this signing season. Criner is the ONLY low pick unsigned. Obviously his agent and he are trying to crack the new system.

Actually, I was figuring Reggie might have leaked it. It makes Criner look like an entitled diva.

  25. RaiderDuck Says:

The only precedent I could find for Criner’s situation was Melvin Bratton a generation ago. Bratton was running back from Miami. He would have been a top-10 pick after his junior year, but elected to stay at the U. He blew his knee out in the Orange, and dropped to the sixth round but demanded near-first round money and sat out the year. In the next year’s draft, he went in the seventh round instead. Oops.

  26. 8RaiderReign8 Says:

    Nope. Severely doubt that.

Reggie holds all the cards here.

This is almost definitely a ploy by Criner’s agent.

  28. lefty12 Says:

The difference is Bratton was at 1 point an early round talent. This guy had no injuries,no issues and still lasted until the 6th round.

Waiting out a year is a horrendous idea.

You want to start that clock towards your 2nd contract ASAP.

Pushing it back a year, just pushes back that clock.

Not to mention the time value of money. He signs this deal and is wise with some of his money and investments, he could probably earn close to 5-10K on interest this year.

    Don’t be an idiot Criner!!!!

He lasted to the 5th rd.

Was he even on the Raidar to be screened???

Did we even interview him before the draft?

  39. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Ahhh…..a Barry Zito start.

Where you can stroll in 3 batters late for the first pitch and it is already 2-0, lol.

  41. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

Bush can be very effective at times.

He’s very dangerous swinging out of the backfield. Good hands, and he’s a load to bring down once he hits the second level.

Despite the talk about him getting winded, he’s also shown that he can wear down a defense, in an individual game, due to his bulk if given enough carries.

Goal line running ? Not very impressive.

Endurance over an entire season ? Suspect.

    =============================================

Based on him holding out for more money when he’s a rookie 5th rounder?

  84. lefty12 Says:

8-they also did it when it was the acceptable practice. Now,under the new CBA,that sh!t has been addressed and steps were taken to make sure it didn’t continue to happen. This fundamental is too difficult for some to understand.

One idiot calls Criner a Diva, and You People assume he is one.

He is a donna based on what?

    **********************

Based on the fact the other 33 supplemental draft picks are all signed and didn’t ask for this.

The two guys drafted behind him, signed for the 144K in May,lol.

    That was two months ago!!!

  87. Thec Says:

$14,000 ? WTH I could use that to buy some cream for this nasty rash, so I guess that all makes sense. You hold your ground Criner. Good cream aint cheap.

  89. Raider O Says:

Maybe the 26 yo rookie OG is a diva too. Who knows why it took so long to sign him.
    You People….

  90. TxRaider210 Says:

Reg should set up an hour glass on his desk and tell Criner and his agent they’re on the clock.

  91. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

Criner wanting to maximize what he gets doesn’t make him a diva or a prima donna.

Going to these lengths and fighting over a paltry 14k, when his main concern should be to grab the 144k, get in camp and start balling towards a better payday in the future, makes him shortsighted and silly.

Time to play some football, scarecrow.

  92. 8RaiderReign8 Says:

    Yeah lefty,

A rookie holding out is just too stupid when all the contracts are slotted. This isnt even a first rounder. He’s technically the only one that hasnt signed of all the picks. This is rediculous.

  93. TxRaider210 Says:
