Criner not signing contract over $14,000

Rookie wide receiver Juron Criner and the Raiders are $14,000 apart on the signing bonus portion of his contract, according to an ESPN report. Not a lot of money but apparently enough to keep Criner away from training camp in Napa.
The report said the Raiders are offering Criner a $144,000 signing bonus, which is in line with where he was drafted in April. However, Criner’s camp is pushing for $158,000, or $2,000 less than the player picked right before Criner. Such a drop in bonus money is the norm for players picked in the fifth round. Yet, the NFL Management Council calls for players taken with compensatory selections to drop more than the norm.
Criner is the only player on the Raiders roster not under contract. They already have signed five of their six draftees. The first practice is Monday.
The ESPN report cited the source as saying Criner “likely” won’t sign a contract until the matter is resolved.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen isn’t available to the media until Sunday afternoon. Criner could not be reached for comment.

It isn’t about $14 grand. It is about complying with the new system. Is it really that difficult to understand?

I hope saving 14k is worth the distraction, players and their agents thinking our GM is cheap, and pissing off a young player with potential who will remember this when he is a FA.

    ==============================================

Look at the other side. We could SPEND the 14K and piss off both Burris and Bergstrom (who undoubtedly had to accept their initial offers), as well send a message that the GM will fold if you push him hard enough.

  • Thec

Criner will be and camp, and continue to rip.

Hopefully put an end to the “diva” talk.

  • TxRaider210

Let Criner and Streater ball for the 14K!

So creates this intrigue? The player, agent or both?

Talk about jumping over a $20 to grab a $5.

    ===========================================

    lol

    Sign the damn contract, Juron!

  • RAIDERMAN99

Criner’s agent is an ass if he fed this story to ESPN, and that’s almost certainly the case.

Going to piss off Reggie by attempting to make him look like a tightwad and alienate your client’s probable employer ?

    Over what ? 14k ?

Hey Juron, there’s something called being smart and playing your cards right.

You’re not sitting out the season. You’re not even sitting out camp.

    You’ve got ZERO leverage.

You don’t have to be happy about it (although you should be), but grab the 144k get your ass in camp, and dump the moron you hired as your agent.

  • Just Fire Baby

    100% speculation…

    ***********************

That’s why I said “maybe” lol

Honestly, I think he is getting bad advice, and not realizing 14K is not what it seems now, and is peanuts to what he stands to make over his career and what not.

  • TxRaider210

If guys know they’re NFL talent, please go to school for business/accounting and manage your own money.

  • http://www.raiders.com Raider O

Just because its a good business for the owners it doesn’t mean it’s good business for everyone else involved.
I’m sure tagging players is great business for them.
    LMAO at your ignorance.

  • Thec

    So who creates this intrigue?

    The player, agent or both?

  • Just Fire Baby

You want an agent, or sometype of “Agency”, when you are a FA and fielding all those calls, and go over signing bonus, guarantee’s, and all that jazz.

As a rookie draft pick in a slotted system? Go to legalzoom.

  • TxRaider210

Excuse me, if Players know in college that they’re NFL talent, why not major in something to avoid agents?

  • Just Fire Baby

First Javon, then Jamarcus, nor Juron.

If our buddy Criner doesn’t work out, let’s just skip over the J’s for a hot minute.

  • Thec

I doubt Criner is that dumb to let this amount of money get in the way of him missing 1 day of camp.

He will sign, and report on sunday.

    ===========================================

The agent is in the player’s ear, but in the end it’s both. You have to expect Criner to have been informed about the compensatory contract standards. Or at least one would hope…

In either case, 14k is a ridiculous amount to squabble over. As others have said, peanuts!

I remember reading a few years ago that some NBA players with max contracts coming up were firing their agents, negotiating their own deals and just hiring entertainment lawyers to go over the legal P’s and Q’s. Even if your lawyer costs $2,000/hr and he spends 80 hours working on it, $160,000 is a lot less than $10 million or whatever.

Thats the part I never understood.

If I am a talent, and sought after why give some lawyer and his group 10% cut esp in a slotted system?

Regardless of which side went public, Reggie CANNOT give in now. When Criner shows up, it will be for the $144,000 and not one penny more.

GTFOH…What about Jon, Jacoby, and Jared????

  • backstageatapuppetshow

    Let’s be fair.

This headline could just as easily read “Raiders refuse to sign Criner over 14,000 dollars”

Now that I’ve been fair….I’ll revert back to what I said all along.

Criner and his OTA time means little to nothing. This game is played with pads on….

Seems like Criner is trying to take advantage of his already productive OTA time…..

    LOL

Way to go Reggie….don’t budge on this prima donna!

  • TxRaider210

Some of the semis in here could have done a better job as Juron’s agent, maybe for a tad less money.lol

  • RAIDERMAN99

Criner’s agent: We need another 14k to sign.

Reggie: I’ve made you a very fair offer. Right in line with what a supplemental pick at the end of the 5th gets. What’s the problem ?

Criner’s agent: We want to get paid as if it wasn’t a supplemental pick.

Reggie: But it WAS a supplemental pick.

Criner’s agent: More dough or I can’t advise my client to sign.

Reggie: Ball is in your court.

Guaranteed something like that went down.

And what’s the agent do ? Leaks to the press.

    Playing hardball with no leverage.

    Bluffing up the wrong tree.

End result ? Criner will cave. Agent exposed as a moron. Reggie laughing his ass off.

  • TxRaider210

Now Reg should offer Criner 143,999.99 lol

Based on him holding out for more money when he’s a rookie 5th rounder?

  • lefty12

8-they also did it when it was the acceptable practice. Now,under the new CBA,that sh!t has been addressed and steps were taken to make sure it didn’t continue to happen. This fundamental is too difficult for some to understand.

One idiot calls Criner a Diva, and You People assume he is one.
The man is trying to get an additional 10%, it’s not like he is asking for 2nd round money, and that makes him a diva?

  • Just Fire Baby

He is a donna based on what?

    **********************

Based on the fact the other 33 supplemental draft picks are all signed and didn’t ask for this.

The two guys drafted behind him, signed for the 144K in May,lol.

    That was two months ago!!!

  • Thec

    ++++++++

He has not held out yet. Report time is tommorrow.

  • Jock Itch

$14,000 ? WTH I could use that to buy some cream for this nasty rash, so I guess that all makes sense. You hold your ground Criner. Good cream aint cheap.

  • http://www.raiders.com Raider O

Maybe the 26 yo rookie OG is a diva too. Who knows why it took so long to sign him.
    You People….

  • TxRaider210

Reg should set up an hour glass on his desk and tell Criner and his agent they’re on the clock.

  • RAIDERMAN99

Criner wanting to maximize what he gets doesn’t make him a diva or a prima donna.

Going to these lengths and fighting over a paltry 14k, when his main concern should be to grab the 144k, get in camp and start balling towards a better payday in the future, makes him shortsighted and silly.

Time to play some football, scarecrow.

  • 8RaiderReign8

    Yeah lefty,

A rookie holding out is just too stupid when all the contracts are slotted. This isnt even a first rounder. He’s technically the only one that hasnt signed of all the picks. This is rediculous.

  • TxRaider210

Bergstrom signed before camp, Criner has not.

  • eastoaklandraider

criner will only hurt himself by missing camp. with all the comp at wr I dont think he can afforrd to miss too many reps

The 26-year-old rookie OG isn’t publicly threatening to hold out unless he gets more money than the slotting system allows for.

Bergs was the ONLY supplemental 3rd round pick, and the first supplemental pick.

Criner was one of three, 5th round supp picks.

The other two took the 144K and signed in May.

  • TxRaider210

    JFB
Precisely, Criner play by the rules fool!

  • Thec

Contract negotiations aside, what historical evidence do we have that sugest he is a diva or a donna???

  • Just Fire Baby

If Criner signed in May like the other two 5th round supp picks, and put his 144K in a simple Index fund in the stock market, he damn near would have made the 14K already, lol.
