Raiders sign Bergstrom, set sights on Criner

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, July 28th, 2012 at 9:40 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders signed third-round draft pick Tony Bergstrom on the eve of training camp, as expected. That leaves wide receiver Juron Criner as the only unsigned player on Oakland’s roster.
As was the case with Bergstrom, the Raiders aren’t expected to have any difficulty getting Criner under contract and on the field in Napa on time for camp.
Bergstrom is being looked at as a guard for now. He is capable of playing guard and tackle. He was Oakland’s top pick in this year’s NFL draft, with the final selection of the third round.

#89: Yep…Remember how well trying to make Brayton and that other big guy outside linebackers worked?…LMAO.

    =======================================

That was because Rob Ryan had Brayton and Irons (try to) play standard OLB, as opposed to Allen and Tarver who understand you can’t do that.

Agreed. The last real up-and-comer we hired as HC was Gruden, 14 years ago.

  7. Marks hair Says:

You need 3-4 players to run a 3-4. DA is smart.. He’ll figure out real quick that kelly cant handle the nt spot.. Plus we dont really have the right lbs or the lb depth.. Snatsy is not an option as an olb in the 3-4..

You need the proper personel to run a 3-4 and da is gonna find out real quick that kelly cant handle the nt. Not to mention our lack of lbs..

    ==============================================

Methinks Kelly’s on the way out. DA couldn’t have been happy that he publicly talks up Kelly as NT, only to have Kelly just as publicly whine that he doesn’t want to play the position.

  9. Marks hair Says:

Right.. So not alot of 3-4.

    =======================================

We’ve still got Ivey, who apparently the coaches think highly of. Kelly (if he stays, which is not guaranteed) could split time with him at NT. I still say (and goodness knows I’ve been wrong before) that they wouldn’t have asked Seymour to shed pounds to play 3-4 DE unless they were serious about using it.

  13. TxRaider210 Says:

Criner should be signed very soon, get it done Reg!

Not gonna happen. Reggie ain’t waiting around until Round 3 in two drafts straight.

  16. Marks hair Says:

12 kelly cant play the nt. He knows this and came right out and said so.. as for ivey, the coaches have never seen him play or practice…

  17. ELWAYs TEETH Says:

It’s not just the NT problem, We don’t have the LBs for a 3-4, or a 4-3 for that matter. Cutting McLame would send the message and rid us of another loser.

  18. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

We need to change defensive coordinators more often than once every 50 years. :)

  19. Marks hair Says:

He could trade the following drafts #1. But yeah I know.. He’s not too woried about making the playoffs this yr.. He’s all about picks.

  20. RaiderDuck Says:

We do have the LBs for 3-4 (even assuming #77 stays on the line):

Wheeler, McClain, Curry, Burris as the starters.

Goethel and Stupar backing up the inside.

Curry can slide outside if needed, and be supplemented by Ihenacho, Kurn, Burnett, or some final-cut pickup.

Not perfect, but it’s good enough with a strong system.

  21. ELWAYs TEETH Says:

Playing a lot more zone defense should put a stop to those long runs we’ve been giving up for too many years. We had too many DBs running downfield with their backs turned, covering receivers, while running backs ran free after LBs whiffed. Those long runs kill us.

  22. Marks hair Says:

17 preaching to the choir. We just dont have 3-4 personnel.. Id rather trade romac or wait till next yr to save the $ and see if he wakes up..

Wow he took a 5-11 team all the way up to 8-8 in only 2 seasons!! Quick lets rehire the cable guy! What an amazing coach!

I just said the guy was “decent”, not amazing. By “decent” i mean average and not horrible.

We can do better and i think we have…but we won’t know for sure until we see how it all goes down.

  25. Marks hair Says:

    20. Have you looked at that shltty list of lbs? I dont 4 of those losers plus kelly at the nt.. Ppl would average 8 yds a carry.

  26. ELWAYs TEETH Says:

RaiderDuck, You’re counting on a lot of guys that haven’t proven they can do all that……yet. I hope you’re right and I agree that there needs to be more than just a 4-3 vanilla D all the time, but you have to play to the strength of your personnel. I just don’t see it yet.

  27. Marks hair Says:

    21. Right..

  28. Marks hair Says:

We will play more 4-2-5 & 3-3-5 nickel than we do 3-4.. Our lbs just dont need to be out there..not 4 of them.

    I’m hoping so.

I’m looking more for “clutch” plays than offensive and defensive rankings cuz they don’t necessarily translate to wins.

San Diego is good example. 2 yrs. ago they were # 1 in defense and # 1 in offense. What did they finish? 9-7?

    Mark,

Shut down corners are overrated. You dont need shut down corners to win the SB…see Giants. You need a solid scheme and a tough front 7.

GB goes 15-1 with worst pass D IN HISTORY…New Eng. gets to SB with 30th ranked D? Giants WIN SB with 29th ranked pass D?

You don’t wanna promote being a bad pass defense as a game plan but it makes me wonder if Reggie hasn’t taken note of such stats and is lessening the importance of spending alot of $$$ or sense of urgency in that area thinking Bartell, Chekwa, and Spencer will be fine…?

  35. Marks hair Says:

Time to mow the lawn.. & check on the christmas trees..

  36. RaiderDuck Says:

Keep in mind that a lot of those numbers against GB and NE are not necessarily the result of a bad pass defense, but rather the result of offenses in two-minute mode racking up an easy touchdown against a defense playing Prevent. Doesn’t really matter if they still win the game by 14 instead of 21.

  37. Marks hair Says:

    34. Its not about shut down corners. Its about dbs that create takeaways..

I got ya. We disagree on how awful the hapless Cableman was. He should not have been HC in the 1st place. I think he maximized the potential he had…which admittedly wasn’t a heck of a lot.

I dfeinitely want coaches who know what they’re doing. I THINK we have that now, but we haven’t seen ‘em in action yet so I have to reserve someof my optimism…

I like what i’m seeing so far.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest/post/_/id/46099/bonus-dispute-root-of-criner-delay

    By Bill Williamson | ESPN.com

What’s the difference between promising Oakland Raiders receiver Juron Criner being at training camp Monday morning when the team opens camp and him not being there?

    Fourteen thousand dollars.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the fifth-round pick has yet to sign his rookie contract with the Raiders because the two sides are squaring off over his signing bonus. Criner wants $158,000 while the team is offering $144,000. The Arizona receiver — who was an OTA star for the Raiders — is the only non-first round pick who is unsigned.

According to the source, Criner’s request is based on what the players drafted directly ahead of him were paid in bonus money. The total difference between the bonus money from the No. 26-32 picks in the fifth round is $18,000-plus dollars. From picks No. 30-32 in the round; the difference between the bonus money was in the $2,000 range for each pick. The bonus money for the No. 32 pick in the fifth round (Cincinnati safety George Iloka) was $160,000-plus. Criner wants the $2,000 bonus decline to continue.

However, the issue is Criner was the No. 33 pick of the round as a supplemental pick. The NFL’s Management Council’s guidelines for bonus slotting takes a significant decline for supplemental picks. The guidelines for the No. 33 pick of the fifth round is the $144,000 the Raiders are offering.

The dispute is very simple. The player wants to stay in line with what the picks ahead of him received and the team wants to stick to the league’s protocol for the pick. According to the source, Criner likely will not sign until the issue is resolved.

  40. ELWAYs TEETH Says:

Give him his $14K and get him into camp.

  41. aig-raiders Says:

@DJ, Yup we agree on the corners stuff. The only reason why we cherished shut down corners was because of old Al.

@Mark, on Cable. He was the HC when we went from a league doormat to a respectable 8-8. Certainly better than the 3 prev guys before him.

  42. 408RAIDER Says:

    I got $20 on it..

  43. aig-raiders Says:

Criner is an idiot. $15k is nothing when compared to getting to camp and being on the right side with the Mgmt team. His agent should be FIRED. If he has a year similar to Dmoore, he’ll make a whole lot more than that $15k in a few years.

  44. Raider O Says:

    Thx Duck.

  47. RaiderDuck Says:

If Criner misses ANY practices at all, his agent has done him a grave disservice and should be canned immediately. Streater will pass him by on the depth chart in no time.

  48. cranium68 Says:

Yeah – what’s 14k? How much did the organization pay for a QB that couldn’t play? 30-40 million? Shoot, they are still paying for that decision. 14,000 is a very small price to pay for potential. Plus, he definitely fits a need – big, possession receiver.

I wonder if maybe this wasn’t the issue with Bergstrom as well? In any case, Reggie’s holding the line on salaries, as well he should. If he breaks now, then every other agent of every other draft pick will know that he can get what he wants simply by threatening a holdout.

  56. aig-raiders Says:

    Duck,
Since 1998, the majority of SB teams won without having a shut down corner. As a matter of fact, you can go back to the Niners and Cowboys as the last teams to truly have a shut down corner in Deion. Pitt, Pats, Giants, and Steelers were multiple SB winners with an avg CB tandem. Shut down corners are overrated. We need to spend money and draft picks on developing our front 7. If there ever was a time for Al to stick to workout wonders, JPP was that DUDE.

  57. cranium68 Says:

Still, Criner better stay healthy and make some plays… it would be awesome if he could produce in the red zone the way he did at Arizona – think he averaged 11 TDs the past two years there. Shoot – half that production as a rookie would be great. Of course, still a long road to the 53-man roster – nothing is guaranteed.

It would be one thing if Reggie was trying to severely lowball you. Even if you feel you’re getting slightly short-changed, you might want to look at the bigger picture and forget about what amounts to chump change in the long run if you’re to have a decent career. KK Munster, how does a happily married real estate tycoon have time to blog around the clock 7 days a week?

  98. TxRaider210 Says:

    Yep
If Criner beats Streater, give him the 14k, Streater wins he deserves a small bonus for beating Criner. He needs to be careful because Reg puts team first.

  99. Raidernationdave Says:

    Done.

    Whut up beyotches!

  100. Raider O Says:

Avoiding distractions and making a player happy is worth the 14k IMO.
I’m not saying we should overpay for talent like Al did, but Al never had a problem signing draft picks.

  101. DJ Johnny Says:

This didn’t have to become public and now an “issue”. They should’ve worked something out behind closed doors…c’mon 14k???

I’m not saying Reggie is being a stubborn egomaniac, but this Criner thing has started off on the wrong foot for sure.

Reggie should not give in at this point, I agree with that…now that it’s “out there”, but this shouldn’t have gotten this far over this amount.

  102. Marks hair Says:

He is slotted to get what he’s asking for.. But reg wants to pay only what the league says he has to. As a compensatory pick, he isnt due they pay slot between #32 of his rd & #1 of the next rd. comp picks get screwed by rule.. But reg should do the right thing and pay him as if he was a regular pick..

  103. TxRaider210 Says:

    O
Damn right they should, and it’d send a message to Criner that he hasn’t won the job yet.

  104. Raider O Says:

    Whut up HO?

  105. lefty12 Says:

Read the damn article.Reggie is offering exactly what the league says he should get per his slot.If he doesn’t want to sign we still hold his rights for this year.Do you honestly think he’d get more next year?He was essentially a 6th round pick-not a 1st or 2nd rd pick.

    83. It might be his only contract..
    $$$$$$$$$$$
Great point. I think Reggie should give it to him. He is not asking for much, and he is not asking for 3rd or 4th round money.
    Pay the man!!
    ===========================================

You can’t just “pay the man”. It’s not about 14 grrr. There is a new system in place that pays new players according to their draft slot status. As soon as one team ignores that it sets a precedent, and then all bets are off and players can start screwing around and demanding whatever they want even tho they have not played a down which is what the league is trying to stop. Don’t be a dummass.

  107. DJ Johnny Says:

Well Jerry basically made fun of anyone worried about this Criner thing. Then again, who would have a imagined a contract dispute over 14,000.

  108. TxRaider210 Says:

Reg has all the leverage against a talented Rookie, Criner needs to take the deal asap.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++

Just finishing up a rather fk’d up month slinging the Korean metal.

  110. Marks hair Says:

Read the last paragragh of the artical. He just wants to get paid in line with the other picks… Its like giving one of your kid less allowance because he has freckles..

  111. TxRaider210 Says:

How many people here would now rather get maybe a Burris jersey instead of Criner?…maybe not many, but he’s losing cash as we blog.imo

Couldn’t Reggie add some incentives to the deal and settle this without having to set a precedent of caving in.

  113. RaiderRetribution Says:

I wonder if Criner realizes the 14g’s after the agents % (700), taxes (5600) It’s only 7700 dollars.

Sign the contract get to camp, being on the bench will cost Criner millions.

  114. TxRaider210 Says:

I’m sure RM has explained the bigger picture to Criner, he must have a douchey agent.

  115. RaiderDuck Says:

    New post.

  116. Marks hair Says:

Sure.. But I dont really see it as caving in.. if the first pic gets 1 dollar, and the third pic get 3 dollars then criner the hypothetical second pic, should get 2 dollars whether he’s a compensatory pic or not…

  117. Just Fire Baby Says:

Talk about jumping over a $20 to grab a $5.

14K after taxes and agent fee’s and union dues, insurance, etc, is probably around half of that.

All these guys, be it top 10 picks or 5th rounders, need to get their azz in camp, in the good graces of the organization, and try to get to that BIG payday, which is your 2nd NFL contract.

The Reggie has spoken, and he will not give in, nor should he. He folds, and it has a domino effect league-wide.

  118. TxRaider210 Says:

That’s plenty of cash for Criner to live a nice lifestyle and prove he’s worth big money.

  119. lefty12 Says:

JFB,too bad some can’t understand this part.

  120. blackandsilverside Says:

I don’t blame Reggie for low balling this kid Criner. If Criner won’t give in here he is only committing professional suicide. If I was a GM and was witnessing what was going on here I wouldn’t touch Criner with a ten foot pole. He’s acting like Randy Moss and TO combined. Such behavior bodes badly; what will Criner be like once he has some success?

Reggie is a cheap ass and good enought for him. Gone are the days when idiot AD will offer a water boy a million buck to fetch for the season.

If I were Reggie, if Criner didn’t show up in camp, I would kick him to the curb. My next target would be the big, lousy chlub, Seymour.
