Myers No. 1 tight end … for now

By Steve Corkran
Monday, August 6th, 2012 at 2:13 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Brandon Myers has been down this road for now, so forgive him if he’s taking in stride his role as the projected starting tight end.
He felt as if he was in line for the starting job around this time last year, too, only to have the Raiders go out and sign veteran Kevin Boss to a multi-year contract on the heels of incumbent Zach Miller signing with the Seattle Seahawks.
It’s been almost five months since the Raiders released Boss, and Myers remains the most-experienced tight end on the roster, at least in terms of receptions.
So far, so good for Myers in his quest to finally emerge as a starter in his fourth NFL season.
“He’s kind of worked himself into the No. 1 guy,” Raiders coach Dennis Allen said. “But, I don’t know … that depth chart is consistently changing. He’s No. 1 right now but two weeks down the road we’ll see where he’s at.”
Myers said he is approaching his job the same way he does each season.
“I’ve prepared like I’m the starter, even when you got a guy like Zach ahead of you, or Kevin, you’ve got to prepare like you’re the starter,” Myers said Monday. “A lot of things happen. It’s nothing I’ve done different. It’s just that I’ve got an opportunity and try to make the plays when I’ve got the opportunity.”
Second-year players David Ausberry and Richard Gordon, as well as fifth-year player Troy Humphrey are competing with Myers for the starting spot, as well as what figures to be three roster spots for tight ends.
Ausberry is a converted wide receiver who brings speed and athleticism to the position. Gordon is deemed the best blocker by Allen. Humphrey is a solid all-around player.
Myers said the goal is for he and the other tight ends to show Allen, offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and quarterback Carson Palmer that they can be valuable assets.
“Yeah, you’d like to think that,” Myers said about the decision to part ways with Boss and go with the other tight ends being a vote of confidence. “But you’ve still got to go out and get the job done. That’s what we’re doing here.
“Having the coach trust you, and Carson and Matt (Leinart), we’re just building every day, every day. Hopefully when the season starts, they’ll have total faith in tight ends and we’ll make some plays.”
Allen said he has been impressed with Myers’ play through the first week-plus of training camp.
“He’s done a nice job of trying to be consistent,” Allen said. “From a receiving standpoint, that’s probably where he’s a little bit more advanced as far as knowing what to do and where to be. We have to continue to work with him on the physical part of the game and the run blocking.
“Again, I’ve said this all along, with the tight ends that we have we’ve got some versatility and each guy has a skill set that we plan on trying to use.”
Myers caught 16 passes last season, and he has only 32 for 250 yards and no touchdowns in his three NFL seasons. He also has started only 12 games.
Those numbers figure to soar in a Knapp offense that features the tight ends. Myers said he and others are well aware of how Knapp uses the tight ends.
“Definitely,” Myers said. “Even in years past, we watched Houston, the way they used their tight ends, stuff like that. Once he came here, we kind of knew that was his background. As tight ends, you kind of like that. We were kind of phased out last year, so we were excited, I guess you could say.”

that guy still has another year or two left in the tank and he provides LEADERSHIP on the field & in the locker room. I wanted him.

He has ties to Dennis Allen (Atlanta).

I wonder why Dungver wanted him over ex-viking and Raider fan favorite E.J. Henderson ??

    ===================================

I can tell you why. Dungver is making a VERY strong push THIS YEAR. They are the odds on favorite for the division and with Manning having a good year will be in the hunt. But teams are razor thin and having reasonably priced veteran backups at key positions is crucial. The Whiners have done the same thing.

Sikh temple shooting suspect Wade Michael Page was white supremacist

(CBS/AP) OAK CREEK, Wis. – Before he strode into a Sikh temple with a 9mm handgun and multiple magazines of ammunition, Wade Michael Page played in white supremacist heavy metal bands with names such as Definite Hate and End Apathy.

The bald, heavily tattooed bassist was a 40-year-old Army veteran who trained in psychological warfare before he was demoted and discharged more than a decade ago.

When the shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in suburban Milwaukee ended, six victims ranging in age from 39 to 84 years old lay dead. Three others were critically wounded, including Oak Creek Police Officer Lt. Brian Murphy.

Page, who was shot to death by police, joined the Army in 1992 and was discharged in 1998. He was described Monday by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a “frustrated neo-Nazi” who had long been active in the obscure underworld of white supremacist music.

For a start, yes. Plus, there’s a lot of mass-shootings in this country, and a lot of Domestic Terrorists.

Myers makes sense….he isn’t great at any one thing, but he is solid in both receiving and blocking. You can’t run specialty guys who can only do one thing in and out of the lineup without giving the defense a major clue as to what the next play is going to be.

Much like Taiwan Jones last year….hey, that little fast RB is in the game….gee, you think they are going to run to the outside on this play?

Hopefully one of the young TEs better develops their blocking or catching, respectively, so they can get more playing time….but for now Myers will have to do.

I don’t really care where the Raiders play, but if the Chargers move to LA, then maybe San Diego will build the Raiders a stadium???? Raiders are probably almost as popular in San Diego as the Chargers are lol.

Oakland sure as heck never will build the Raiders the stadium they want. I don’t blame Oakland either….the Raiders have not exactly set the world on fire in the 17 years or so since they returned.

We got what we got……Fortunately, I don’t think the TE is gonna impact our Offense that much; either positively or negatively. Personally, I think all he HAS to be is consistent. Doesn’t HAVE to be great. What did our TE’s average last couple years anyway….1-3 catches per game; IF that?
I’m just not getting too worked up over it.

  38. backstageatapuppetshow Says:

But I would take Hue’s offense from the past two years over anything the Greg Knapp has done while calling plays as an offensive coordinator.

Hue needed to learn to be a little bit more conservative on 3rd and short, and a little more in tune with his game management, but he had great potential.

r8rinparadise, good point. We have young TEs, I’d like to see them showcased as you say. Myers was pretty serviceable last year as a 2nd year guy. Should get majority of reps in between the 20s. Gordon’s a good blocker, don’t know how the injury will set him back.

Hey, if the QB is happy, then I am happy, but we will just have to wait and see how it turns out. I know Hue’s offense can put point on the board….but from what I recall of Knapp’s time here under Kiffin and Cable…..when he was actually calling plays that it…..things were not right.

Now, that being said, Knapp may have picked up a thing or two being Kubiak’s errand boy in Houston, so I am holding out hope that Knapp can implement Kubiak’s offense here in Oakland better than he implemented whatever that was in his first stint as OC here.
But if someone put a gun to my head and asked me which OC would put more points on the board next year, I’d have to roll with Hue over Knapp.

But, of course, hue would be undermining Dennis Allen and everyone else above him in an attempt to run the team again lol.

That’s why he had to go in the first place….Hue would have ran to Mark Davis every time he disagreed with Reggie. It would have been a poisonous situation.

Knapp’s hiring was the main head scratcher moment of Reggie’s offseason….I know he let his HC choose, but Knapp? Really?

I am just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

    ============

Naw, I totally get what you’re saying. It just seems that Player after player seem to be glowing about the new scheme. DMAC included. I’m crossing my fingers as well but, the players “Excitement” is getting ME excited too.

  77. Dakota Says:

Hue wasn’t perfect….just had the best offense in Oakland since Gannon and Gruden/Callahan. It was nice to see points on the board for once.

Just sayin’, Hue has a lot to clean up as a HC, but the potential is there. Way more potential than the Wife Beating Buffoon.

How’s it goin’ 79? Ready for some damn football, I see Bartell should be back soon and Shonasty’s ankle could just be a bruise..good news.

    ================

Hey Tx, it’s good man. Yeah, I got a little fix last night watchin Hall of Fame game. Gonna Peek at the Dolts Thursday night and do some Recon….I’m getting all kinds of ansy. Already got next Monday’s game set on DVR. So, did you do it? You order the jersey?
    ———————
LOL Yeah man I’ll be checkin’ that Dolts game too, hoping I’m not impressed. Nah bro almost did, went to the mall and they told me 2-4 weeks til Nikes arrive. The kid told me they may be more fitted, so I wanna try one on. Picked up a sweet cap though, then saw Reg with the same cap in the camp photos, fella has good taste.lol

  79. KoolKell Says:

Knapp was the OC is SF fron 01′ – 03′. they went #3 in scoring in 01′, 13th in scoring in 02′, and 9th in scoring in 03′

Knapp was OC in Atlanta from 04′ – 06′.
04′ Atl was 16th in scoring
05′ Atl was 14th in scoring
    06′ Atl was 25th in scoring.\

Kanpp was OC in Oakland 07′ – 08′
07′ Oak was 23rd in scoring
08′ Oak was 29th in scoring

Knapp was OC in Seattle in 09′
09′ Sea was 25th in scoring

  80. J Hill Says:

I think the guy who the coach thinks is the best blocker is going to play more than short yardage and red zone snaps. More like AT LEAST short yardage and red zone spots.

  81. backstageatapuppetshow Says:

Knapp just needs to install concepts and let Carson run the show…

If he does that….the Offense will thrive.

  82. theghostronin79 Says:

that’s cool Tx…. Yeah, I saw a new Jersey the other day. Some dude was wearing #20. They ARE more fitted. It almost looked like a T-shirt. Not all loose, baggy, and hangin past yer ass. I get close, then I chicken out. It’s alot of money to spend on somethin’ you might not like, or get the size wrong and what-not.

  83. TxRaider210 Says:

I think Saunders is there to guide Knapp with fine tuning, why pay the man just to chase around Tonga at practice.lmao

Not if the guy cannot catch…as Dakota said….if he is on the field and only blocking he is a wasted Chess Piece….he has to be able to do both….

Myers blocks better than Gordon catches….

Yeah man it’s weird, even some of the players are rockin’ like 48 size on the field. I’d like to think a 52 would do but who knows..my gal talked some sense in to me about tryin’ one on before I order a custom.

  87. backstageatapuppetshow Says:

J.Hill…but as it stands…ur right…Gordon is the number 2….and I’m quite sure we will have some 2 TE sets outside the scoring zone.

  89. Dakota Says:

Carson Palmer and McFadden can probably make most OCs look good….so there is hope!

That defense though…..man, I hope our HC and DC can work some miracles! A lot of old dogs stuck with Al Davis tricks that will need some major deprogramming if that defense has any hope of helping us win games.

It may not happen this year, but as Reggie gets more cap space and picks he can use to flush the turds from that side of the ball, hopefully things will begin to turn around.

  90. theghostronin79 Says:

Gotta split man, I’ll catch you tomorrow. Have a good one Nation.

  91. backstageatapuppetshow Says:

I think Reece is going to be moving around though…..Knapp would be a fool not to use him in this capacity….similar to the way the Texans used James Casey last season….true H back!

  111. raiderinparadise Says:

Reece a back-up RB? Your stupid. Sorry.

Reece is a threat at FB to get open in the pass game and to run form the FB spot and a fast FB who can get outside on sweeps to lead block. When he is at FB the Defense has to watch him … put him at RB and SChmitt at FB and you negate his whole skill-set. The reason Reece is a weapon is beacuse he plays FB, he can exploit mismatches all day.

Hey Boomer, you dropped your bait on the ground. Might wanna pick it up…..the hook is empty!

  116. raiderinparadise Says:

When you have Reece at FB and McFadden at RB … you give LB’s a very hard time when play-action and screen game comes into play … if our TE’s come along then you have forced the D to account for # pass-catchers form the line of scrimage.

This makes the WR’s smile and opens up the seams.

Yeah, but how about the 3rd down back? Passing situations? Reece may not be a stud lead blocker, but he can pass block pretty well. Also his twitter page lists himself as an H-Back.

  118. DutchRaider77 Says:

    @raiderinparadise
When you have Reece at FB and McFadden at RB …with a three receiver set, you could go no huddle and come out in a legit 5 wide…make them burn a timeout.
