Goodson released from hospital
By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, August 7th, 2012 at 8:00 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders just announced that running back Mike Goodson was released from Queen of the Valley Medical Center and returned to the team hotel in Napa.
Here’s the statement from the Raiders:
“The Raiders received encouraging news Tuesday night from doctors treating Mike Goodson, who left the practice field with a neck injury, with movement in his extremities, during the team’s training-camp practice. Goodson’s CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test were negative. He has returned to the team’s training-camp headquarters at the Napa Valley Marriott.”
Goodson suffered the injury as a result of a collision with strong-side linebacker Philip Wheeler midway through practice today.
Team trainers and medical personnel tended to Goodson as he lay on the field, with running back Taiwan Jones and wide receiver Denarius Moore kneeling beside Goodson.
Goodson’s facemask was removed as his head — with his helmet still on — was secured to a body board before emergency personnel summoned by the Raiders loaded him into an ambulance.

– Ever wonder what happened to offensive coordinator Al Saunders? Well, he isn’t hard to find if you spend any time watching a Raiders practice.
He’s the one guarding the tight end on a goal line pass or the one running up to a player at the end of a play to impart some wisdom or dole out encouragement.
In other words, he’s all over the place and helping out in any way needed.
“Well, he’s helped all of us,” Allen said. “A guy with that type of experience helps all of us. He’s been a head coach in the league before. So I’ve leaned on him for advice on certain things. Obviously, he’s a great source for Greg in the passing game, especially with our offense.
“And he does a great job working with Mark Hudson with the tight ends on a day-to-day basis. I’m really pleased with Al. He’s a very important part of our coaching staff and a very important part of our organization.”
Saunders was reassigned after last season, with his new title being senior offensive assistant.

Thanks for the prayers! Just got an update that he is fine and they had to take very careful percussions to be safe. #GodIsGood

“Percussions”?
Last thing Goodson needs is some idiot playing drums in his hospital room.
August 7th, 2012 at 8:35 pm
Wonder how long he’ll be out of practice?
August 7th, 2012 at 8:38 pm
Very relieved to hear Goodson is ok. Camp injuries have been pretty minimal until this. Hopefully, this will be the last big injury news we hear from Raiders camp.
Goodson might be out a few weeks, but I’m still not a fan of bringing in Benson. Lets see what kind of depth we have on the team first. Benson isn’t going anywhere fast.
August 7th, 2012 at 8:40 pm
I wonder if he’ll miss any time at all.
Wow! What a scare that was. I was worried he might be dead for a minute, now he’s back at the hotel.
Amazing.
August 7th, 2012 at 8:43 pm
Awesome news! So glad to hear that! I’m sure Wheeler wasn’t being malicious, just trying to make an impact. That’s football, brutal sport. Still a fan of Wheeler.
August 7th, 2012 at 8:45 pm
I’m sure Wheeler felt horrible about it; and quite relieved now that worst is over.
August 7th, 2012 at 8:45 pm
Now that we know Goodsons good, I wonder if it would be a dirtbag thing to hit up Amber on twitter, lol
Nah seriously, this is great news, I have a feeling he is going to play a big part for us this year
August 7th, 2012 at 8:47 pm
How about that Rookie WR from the Vikes? Tore ligaments in both his knees on the same play! That’s a horror show, poor kid.
August 7th, 2012 at 8:48 pm
It’s hard to say how long he’ll be out. I think they would’ve kept him at the hospital if he had shown concussion symptoms.
I’m not sure if MRI’s reveal concussions or not, but everything came back negative…
August 7th, 2012 at 8:50 pm
Hardknocks first episode was alright, Chad Johnson was pretty damn funny, I don’t think DA would put up with that fool, but he funny than a mutha fka
August 7th, 2012 at 8:51 pm
To me, it seems like we’ve had alot of injuries. Not sure if there have been an inordinate amount or not as compared to other teams.
August 7th, 2012 at 8:53 pm
Never heard Palmer talk up any tight end outside of Ausberry. Remember him praising him pretty big?
That’s the first upset of camp imo…Myers # 1.

of course NAPALMER is the man!
he’s a complete badazz… and will prove many, many haters wrong this year.
August 7th, 2012 at 10:18 pm
We might really have something with DA. I hope he will be the answer to the coaching carousel we have had going on.
I was pretty disappointed with the TE depth chart. I was hoping Aus was going to be the guy. I just can’t wrap my mind about Myers starting. There is plenty of camp to go, so you never know.
With TO and Edwards taking vet minimum deals, I don’t see why we wouldn’t call Shockey and see if he wants to play for 960k this year.
August 7th, 2012 at 10:21 pm
Hubert never gave Myers a chance … but at times Myers came up with a couple of big catches.
i’ll tell you all this much, Brandon Myers will get his looks, simply because he will get ignored a lot.. teams will be worried about Reece, DMC, Moore, DHB, Ford and CRINER …
there’s no excuse for Brandon Myers if he’s the one that starts.
MONDAY NIGHT we shall see if he can find open spots in the flat … that’s what good TE’s do all day long and move the chains, while providing great blocks for your QB and RB’s running to your side.
August 7th, 2012 at 10:21 pm
Mike Goodson, glad you are ok sir. I’m looking forward to seeing what you can do now that you may actually get an opportunity to show your stuff with us.
Wheeler, all I gots to say to you sir is, you better bring that intensity to the field when it actually counts. Nothing wrong with a little intensity in practice, but you gotta stop laying it on your own team, save it for the real games.

Must have just been a stinger. An MRI will show a concussion so I doubt that was part of the problem. Glad to hear the kid is OK.
August 7th, 2012 at 10:37 pm
been gone a few days, but here’s my take on surprises and insight from the first depth chart:
OL: interesting that hurd is #2 LT. and i said all along that nix had a shot. bergstrom and barksdale really backup both sides and it’s apparent parsons will make it. that leaves one or two spots, probably 1. since parsons also plays G, that means it will likely be a T, so hurd actually has a real shot. surprising to me that wang and haslam are 3rd team, but i suppose that means nix and hurd have impressed.
TE: i’m surprised like everyone that ausberry is listed 3rd, but maybe it’s not that crazy. gordon played a lot more last year and he is big. myers has looked ok when given a shot and he was a top receiver in college.
WR: two surprises. mcgee ranking so high and calhoun ranking so low. obviously they like mcgee. criner and streater are rookies and rookies don’t jump up in front of vets easily, although mcgee isn’t really a vet. all three are big possession guys.
QB: yawn.
FB: yawn.
RB: yawn.
DT: bilukidi listed 3rd team. cumbie 2nd? cumbie is 6′7″ but only 290. bilukidi and hamilton are 6′5″ and 310. seems like they would be better on the nose, but maybe cumbie is showing something.
DE: yawn.
LB: goethel and stupar both playing middle? ihenacho 2nd team? hmm.
S/CB: yawn.
ST: here’s a surprise. mccann not really in the running for return man. he’s pretty good there. also, criner and carrier are pretty big return men. imagine taking them on with a full head of steam.

Razor Thin at the RB position…
Benson might not be the worst Idea, we do have cap space 7 million i think
August 7th, 2012 at 10:41 pm
This might be a warning to the team SIGN ANOTHER RB.
Just like Mcfadden’s orbital bone problem was a sign of things to come last season
August 7th, 2012 at 10:41 pm
neck injuries are a big deal. goodson could be out a while and who knows if he’ll be tentative when he does come back. lonyae miller? oh boy. benson or someone like him could be on the way indeed. or another trade?
August 7th, 2012 at 10:41 pm
Benson does us no good unless he comes on for vet minimum. BigMac may not even do that anyway, because if and when Goodson comes back, our new GM feels good about our RBs.
August 7th, 2012 at 10:42 pm
we could be seeing a big dose of lonyae miller to see what he can do. also reece and schmitt as RB’s at times.
August 7th, 2012 at 10:46 pm
we definitely need a short yardage back. that’s the point about Benson.. he’s not worth the money because he definitely isn’t one.

——————————————————-
Big Mac has got to know that we are paper f’n thin at RB. With 7 mil in cap space no reason we can’t sign a back like Benson for one year deal low-end at the vet min side.
Mcfadden–No full season yet
Jones–Already f’n injured
Goodson–see above
August 7th, 2012 at 10:50 pm
Benson is still sitting at home with no pay check . no one wants to sign the man.
you may be right if the injuries persist.
i would probably take Benson over Jones if the kid can’t stay healthy.
August 7th, 2012 at 10:51 pm
We got to do something with that 7 million in cap space…It will not carry-over to next year. Bush signed with the Chicago Queers for what 3 million/year? Surely somewhere between 3 mill and vet min should be reasonable
August 7th, 2012 at 10:54 pm
Reggie will take full advantage of the next round of cuts … and if RB still remains a very banged up position, he will make a move i’m sure.
August 7th, 2012 at 10:54 pm
Yeah could be tough, we may need the short yardage and a load-carrying back if the injury bug continues
August 7th, 2012 at 10:58 pm
i guess Benson does sound kind of nice right about now. keep Miller and our FB’s for short yardage…
although, it’s Benson’s YPC that is the reason why no one has signed him. very not so dmn good.

August 7th, 2012 at 11:41 pm
i know about goodson. i said when we got him it was a perfect move. the kid is a good RB. we got him for a big, fast, not very good OT. but right now, he and jones could both be out of monday’s game, and since dmc will receive light duty, it leaves us w/ miller, reece, and schmitt getting most of the carries. maybe we’ll find out one of them is peyton hillis from two years ago. otherwise, another RB would have to come here. i love dmc but his injury history demands it, especially since jones can not be a 20+ carry guy anyway.

Palmer is the best QB that we’ve had since Gannon. I’m expecting that he is going to be better than Gannon and that he’s going to have a great few years as a Raider.
It bothers me though, that he talks to Pete Carroll on the phone.

Sept 10 depth chart may be much much different from this one. Lonyae Miller will get many reps this preseason.
August 8th, 2012 at 5:57 am
That’s what stinks about being so thin at RB. We’re gonna be robbed of seeing Taiwan. I was really looking forward to that.
Who’s gonna tote the rock for this Dallas game? Not DMAC, or Taiwan or Goodson, so is Lonyae Miller gonna play the whole game basically? There not gonna hand it off to Reece alot and u can’t give it to Owen Schmitt all night.
Heavy doses of Manase Tonga? Or just pass it all night?
August 8th, 2012 at 5:58 am
*They’re
August 8th, 2012 at 5:58 am
Much Much different?
Maybe in the 2nd to 4th strings, but I don’t see more than maybe 1 or 2 starters moving around (except for injury).
I was suprised that so many were suprised that Ausberry was 3rd on the depth chart.
The guy has played about 10 snaps at TE HIS ENTIRE LIFE!!!! Compare that to Myers, who has probably 1,000 NFL snaps at TE, and Gordon, who had probably 1,000 snaps at the U at TE.
Ausberry is on the outside looking in, as far as a TE.
August 8th, 2012 at 5:58 am
Glad to hear Goodson is doing ok, and that DA was the first one at the hospital waiting for him. Wheeler just needs to be more aware, that stuff wouldn’t fly in a game either.
August 8th, 2012 at 5:59 am
McFadden will play in the Dallas game, and probably get a handful of touches.
Just to set the tone on the season, I wouldn’t be suprised if the first two plays were carries for Darren.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:02 am
Ausberry showing up 3rd string on the depth chart at this point in training camp is an auspicious sign. He supposedly put on a lot of extra weight and was supposed to be working on his blocking. But he’s buried behind two marginal NFL quality TE’s. He’s old to be learning the position and a project till proven otherwise. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was cut if he can’t make some meaningful plays in preseason either as a TE or special teams.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:06 am
Ausberry has to be at least an adequate blocker, or he probably will never see significant snaps at TE.
Everyone always says he would be a matchup nightmare if a LB were to cover him. First of all, 75% of NFL TE’s are matchup nightmares for LB’s, and 2nd, if he can’t block, why on earth would a LB be in coverage on him? The other team would just roll over a safety, or maybe even a nickle corner on him.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:06 am
I was thinking DMAC 1st series for a few carries and then done.
Palmer prob. one series, then Leinart till halftime. Then Pryor for the 3rd quarter and Caballero the 4th.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Pryor sling it the whole 2nd half and even more slinging since thin at
RB? Don’t know.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:09 am
The reason I was surprised at Ausberry was that Palmer was talking about (at ota’s) what a monster he was gonna be.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:09 am
75. Excellent points. A lot of people take for granted that the TE position is somehow easy to learn, but a lot of star athletes and former basketball players flame out. Blocking at the end of the line isn’t something you can mask. If inadequate, Ausberry is a liability. I consider him still a project/experiment and if doesn’t turn the corner, the plug will be pulled.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:12 am
I agree with Darren on one series, maybe bring back the 2nd series for one snap and let him pass-protect or something.
I would suprised if Carson only played one series, unless that one series is a 9 play 80 yard TD drive, then you leave on top.
Pryor should play most of the 2nd half, and the other guy will probably play the last series or two.
Leinart will run the end of the half/two minute offense, and we should have some decent WR’s out there running around. That could be one of the more entertaining things to watch on Monday.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:13 am
Anybody see Palmer playing for more than one series?
I know Brees played just one, but Saints also have 5 games instead of 4 this preseason.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:14 am
who are the current practice squad RBs?

August 8th, 2012 at 6:21 am
I could see them keeping Palmer in for more than just one series IF they go 3 and out or something.
Raider J…I have no idea who those guys are. We might see these some of these mystery men though on Monday night.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:22 am
I see the depth chart has all 89 listed. Rise and shine Lonyae!
August 8th, 2012 at 6:25 am
You guys think Taiwan will play?
Would like to see him emerge with Goodson getting hurt, and taking a good chunk of the reps on Monday and taking advantage of it by playing well.
That would be a great sign for the year.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:29 am
Correct me if i’m wrong but Reece is not a guy they wanna hand the ball to a bunch of times and Schmitt is a guy u give it to on special occasions. Tonga isn’t a multi carry back either.
All that’s left for Mon. nite is Lonyae.
None sees Goodson playing Mon. nite do they?
It’ll be interesting to see who totes that rock.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:31 am
JFB, My opinion is Taiwan won’t be healthy enough. As irritating as that is. Hope i’m wrong.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:31 am
Schmitt might get 6-7 carries.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:33 am
If Taiwan can practice on Friday or Saturday, I think they play him, and maybe even have Carson hand it to him once.

August 8th, 2012 at 6:33 am

Mike Goodson, glad to see he’s ok, now let him get some rest and heal that neck, he will be an important player for us.
As for MNF, we know what McFadden and Goodson can do, hopefully Taiwan gets some carries but this might be Lonyae Miller’s best chance to show what he can do in this system, he’s bound to get increased reps the rest of the week and might suprise a ton of people on Monday, make it happen kid.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:47 am
-Q: Has DeMarcus Van Dyke made an impression on you?
-PALMER: He has. He’s looked really good. He’s made a lot of really good plays. Because he can turn and run and he can also jump on balls and break. He’s so athletic and so fast, once he does have to open up and turn and run he’s really looked good in camp and just got to keep grinding.
We’re going to keep trying to pick on him and keep working against him. But he’s looked really good so far.
********
I hope they continue to throw the kitchen sink at DVD and he gets increased reps. Good or bad plays, he needs as much game experience as possible to ramp up to be the new starting corner.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:50 am
Q: How would you assess yourself personally in this camp so far?
-PALMER: Personally, for me, I always want to complete every single ball I throw. In practice, it’s not unrealistic.
I missed a ball over Brandon Myers’ head that I can think of right now. I always want to get better, but we are where we need to be at this point in camp. We’re only a week in.
We got a game in another four or five days, but I feel really good in the offense, I feel confident and comfortable calling the plays, comfortable redirecting the protections, getting in and out of plays. I still got a lot of work to do. It’s still early in camp.
*******
Night and day difference in expectations from the starting QB from last year. Palmer expects to complete 100% of his throws. And the good thing is he has the talent to back up the talk.
August 8th, 2012 at 6:55 am
Taiwan had hammy issues thru college too. I’d be pleasantly suprised to see him get 30 touches this season.

CT, and MRI are Negative…….Good…..But, what happened then? What’s wrong with him? What exactly is injured? Muscle, nerve, joint?
August 8th, 2012 at 7:05 am
Dennis Allen: “Dallas has played 34 defense with an undersized nose for a lot of years now, so I don’t really worry about that.
Desmond Bryant and Christo Bilukidi got some work at nose tackle Sunday when the Raiders shifted to a 3-4 alignment.
- Remember some of us compared Dallas NT Jay Rattlif to our own Desmond Bryant back in late march? looks like we had a point.
August 8th, 2012 at 7:05 am
Taiwan is fast as hell, as long as the hammy doesn’t reoccur. Like I said, this may be his last chance, at least with us!

I’d guess maybe he got his bell rung a bit, just not a severe concussion or anything…who knows.

Probably temperary nerve damage since Wheeler said that he heard Taiwan say something to the effect of ‘I can’t get up’

I did a gnarly endo on my mountain bike last year with no helmet. Definitely rung my bell, couldn’t get up for a couple minutes, but was fine after about 5. Crappy story I know, but maybe Goodson had the 5 minute syndrome like I did.

Yeah maybe, he probably saw lights after the hit and needed time to gather his thoughts. Good to know that he wasn’t totally out of it for a long time.

Well if Goodson didn’t suffer a concussion, maybe there’s a chance he’s ready for Monday’s game. For some reason, I think he’ll be out there.

Dallas’s D was really good the latter part of 2009; dominating everybody; that is until they met Favre in the playoffs and the ole gunslinger popped 34 on ‘em.
I guess my point is how good was that Dallas D that DA points to as an example for the undersized nose tackle? Did it really work out for them that well?

I understand the concern about bringing in a guy like Plaxico as far as not wanting a guy w/ attitude and ego issues, but i’d like to see us get to the point where Raiders were a team that talented guys like that could come to and the ego stuff isn’t an issue.
If Plax went to New England everyone would say how perfect a situation that is for he and the Pats, cuz the great Belichik will “keep him in line” and Plax will embrace the “Patriot Way”.
August 8th, 2012 at 7:56 am
Q: How has Mike Mitchell done so far?
A: “He is getting consistent. Before, he’s always had his spurts in camps before. This one, he’s finally staying healthy and he’s out there making plays now.”
Q: defensive player to look for?
A: Defense will be Ro(lando McClain, linebacker). In this defense, he can have a Patrick Willis, Ray Lewis-type year. He’ll be straight to the ball, make tackles, get picks, have a great year.”

I think he was making the point that you don’t have to be a 6′2 330, big bellied, traditional NT to suceed at the position, specially since we’ll remain a 4-3 team most of the time.

August 8th, 2012 at 8:05 am
Glad to hear Goodson is doing well. I hope i’m wrong, but i don’t anticipate Jones being very reliable again this year. The dude is fast, no doubt..but the dude is always dinged.
I’m wondering if the Wheeler hit was a message from the D for shoving Underwood. I would hope not, seeing our O isn’t the ones that deserve severe punsishment.
We’ll prolly see a lot of DMC and L. Miller monday night. I’m sure Reggie (me included) wants to see what he has in his available rb’s live before he makes a decision on bringing in help. I personally don’t think we’re set at RB behind DMC imo. We shall see soon enough!

128,
Nah…not really, but the guy can really do some things in the redzone.

I don’t see Reggie dishing a lot of $ out for Plax when he’s got a lot of young talent.

Look at the camp photos day 8, there’s one of Wheeler in a drill, hair flying around. Noticed there was a chunk of paint missing from the helmet crown, probably from the hit.
August 8th, 2012 at 8:22 am
“Mike Goodson had a neck injury; we’re not sure of the extent of it right now,” coach Dennis Allen said after practice. “He did have feeling in his extremities, which is good news. We’ll monitor that throughout the night.”
Goodson caught a short pass during an individual drill inside the 20-yard line, turned up field and was met by a crunching blow by Wheeler. The force of the hit knocked out Goodson’s mouth piece.
