Report: Benson said Raiders tried to sign him

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, August 14th, 2012 at 8:55 am in Oakland Raiders.

Veteran running back Cedric Benson told FoxSportsWisconsin.com he signed with the Green Bay Packers for a chance to win the Super Bowl and that the Raiders and Detroit Lions had also made offers.

“Both teams needed backs,’’ Benson said.

The Raiders’ interest, never confirmed by team officials, had been speculated for months and made sense of late given injuries to running backs Taiwan Jones (hamstring) and Mike Goodson (neck).

With Jones and and Goodson inactive in the preseason opener against Dallas, Lonyae Miller replaced starter Darren McFadden after three plays and gained 39 yards on 15 carries with a long run of seven yards.

Rashawn Jackson, listed as a fullback, came on late and carried three times for eight yards.

The early stages of the new regime with Reggie McKenzie as general manager and Dennis Allen have seemed to indicate a preference for developing young talent rather than veteran players with high miles.

Benson, 29, has gained more than 1,000 yards in each of the last three seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals but in the last two years has averaged under 4 yards per carry, gaining 3.9 yards per attempt last season and 3.5 in 2010.

With James Starks sidelined indefinitely with turf toe, Benson could evolve as Green Bay’s primary back.

That was unlikely to happen in Oakland, where McFadden looked healthy and explosive in the preseason opener with two rushes for 20 yards and gaining 18 yards on a screen pass on the first three plays from scrimmage.

Jones is listed as day-to-day with his hamstring strain and Goodson, who taken to the hospital last week with a neck injury, has no structural damage and is expected to return before the end of preseason.

Streater was ahead of him on the depth chart and in playing time, so no, I am just agreeing with the coaching staff.

As far as the Defense goes:

    - I’d wait on evaluating anything, Dallas interior OL was a sieve and you can’t get much from such a short performance, run D looked good but we’ve seen them stuff the run for long periods of time only to eventually break down and start giving up 5 yards a pop, need to see much more and vs better competition.

    - Now on Dallas first drive, Huff got away with a blatant hold when he was covering the slot, regular Refs would have flagged him, then Dallas commits a penalty and drops a screen pass that looked to be going nowhere as the Defense was ready.

    - Then our first bltz was picked up perfectly by Dallas, the one play where OL looked good, so Romo hits Dez Bryant for a 20 yard play, Bartell was running with him but there’s no way to defend the back shoulder throw when the QB has time, that play they would have made on any Defense when the blitz fail.

    - DVD and Chekwa both looked shaky, Chimdi seemed to get better as the game went on but not DVD.

  6. guest123 Says:

I’m glad Streater had a nice game. I expect good things from him. But when the regular season begins, I still don’t expect him to match the performance that Criner will eventually put up. And I don’t see Streater leapfrogging Criner anytime soon.

  8. TxRaider210 Says:

Never wanted Cedric, Goodson should play Friday and I’d bet Taiwan the following game.imo

  9. Bob Marley Says:

Then again, DVD looked bad in the 1st pre-season game last year and then went on to be our best CB in burn percentage rate on the few games he started.

  10. The Big Banana Says:

Not seeing any complaints of the officiating. Thought they actually called some obvious holds on the Dallas O that typically go uncalled against our boys.

Wasn’t sure about the touchback call as they didn’t show a replay for whatever reason.

    Overall, thought they did fine.

Ford needs to get his act in gear. He had a horrible game. He can’t afford to play like this and keep his spot in the rotation.

  18. Marks hair Says:

Romo had to show the refs where the ball is placed after a kick… They need work.lol

  19. Just Fire Baby Says:

And again, our first punt return of the season, Jacoby let’s it bounch at the 13 yard line, and watches it roll to the 3.

This is becoming an epidemic for our return team.

Go up and fair-catch the f’n ball!!!!!!!!

  20. RaiderDebo Says:

Like what I saw from the D last night. It’s clear that we’re much better on that side of the ball. But I think the passing game may be doomed. I don’t like our receivers at all. I love D.Moore and DHB, but not as #1s. We’ve got major issues there. Darren, please don’t get hurt this year.

  21. Bob Marley Says:

Also, Palmer, McFadden, DHB, Ford and the starting OL barely played, Goodson and Moore didn’t play at all, one would think we’ll see better results with those guys playing at least a full half.

Shotgun and empty backfield on the 2nd play from scrimagge was nice to see, it was the screen to McFadden, Ford blocked Dallas best LB Sean Lee, nice.

  22. guest123 Says:

I was pretty pissed off that Chimdi had the chance to down the ball at the 5 pretty easily and he lets the thing roll to the goal line. That’s 15+ yards given up for free. Can’t have those type of “mental” errors. I can live with physical errors where you just get beat straight up, but the mental errors are the sign of an unprepared and disinterested player.

  23. Just Fire Baby Says:

Barnes cleared the way on that pass to Darren as well.

That was a nice looking play, glad that Knapp could learn from the Tom Cable offense.

  24. FERREIRA209 Says:

I thought the funniest play was the very first offensive play. Dallas LB’s run right into each other just before the snap! :D

    Nothing funny about Ford. :(

  28. TxRaider210 Says:

I’d like to think the injuries to Moore and T Jones are very minor, which is why Reg hasn’t brought in FA’s yet, but he may when cuts happen..

  29. DennisAllensVisor Says:

    Carl Ihenacho = Joe Mays.

He’s playing his way onto the roster.

  30. guest123 Says:

I like the motioning of McFadden to the slot on that screen play. That’s the kind of play that was missing last season and worked for Cable in the past. I hope we see a lot more of that type of mismatch formation. Defenses look clueless when they see #20 out wide like that.

  31. DennisAllensVisor Says:

So the Lakers are looking to trade Gasol for Josh Smith now huh? Interesting..

  32. Just Fire Baby Says:

King is going to have to learn to hold if ever wants to earn an NFL regular season paycheck.

  33. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

    DVD plays with no awareness.

Has the physical talent to shadow, but seems lost as far as anticipating a route, or sensing when the ball might be delivered. Is clueless with his back to the opposing QB.

Lack of bulk hurts his tackling.

Could eventually be a force if he fills out, bulks up, and wakes up.

OAKLAND — Raiders coach Dennis Allen makes his debut as Raiders head coach Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys and although the game won’t count in the standings, he said it will be a night to remember.

“My first game coaching in the National Football League is a memory,” Allen said. “I still remember that. All of these are nice little milestones in my career. I’m looking forward to the opportunity.”

Allen’s first game as an NFL assistant came in 2002, as the defensive quality control assistant for the host Atlanta Falcons, in a 23-13 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

HERE ARE THE results of the eight previous debuts of Raiders head coaches in preseason openers:

I agree that Reg isn’t in the wasting money mode, but a few posters are expressing a little angst about this 7 mill. Reg has to work with and think he could certainly find some good uses for it.

  44. aig-raiders Says:

    Streater vs Criner?

I’d love to find out why they threw more to Streater and only a few passes to Criner. Was it because Streater was able to get open while Criner was covered? Streater looked smooth out there and the kid runs 4.37.

Criner has done nothing since OTA’s where no contact is allowed, Streater has outplayed him in camp, so they say, and in game one.

  53. guest123 Says:

Still very concerned about the TE position. If you think about the type of conservative offense, competency at the TE position is going to be important. You can see the plays being pass patterns of 5 or 6 yards often enough, and the TE will be included, either as a weapon or a clearout/decoy. With Myers status up in the air, we can’t wait too long to respond. Gordon/Ausberry isn’t the solution.

    whats the difference ??

Carrier has been shining in camp.

  58. Just Fire Baby Says:

I think it is pretty clear now, that Goethel is not an option at LB.

He was a step behind (or 2…or 3) on just about everything.

  59. Just Fire Baby Says:

Preseason games DO mean something, not just the final score. As if we made the 2 FG’s and things would be better for the doom and gloomers? LOL

But, we can see that the D looks better, our backup tackles are atrocious, our DB’s are average at best, Pryor is about as close to an NFL QB as Jeff Otis is, and Rolando seems much more motivated.

You can gain insight into what to expect for the year, just not by looking at the score.

  60. guest123 Says:

If Goethal isn’t an option, who do we have at LB that is? Ihenacho 53?

Face it, we have a huge issue of depth at LB, especially with Curry being a total unknown if he’ll even play again.

  61. aig-raiders Says:

    Hill,

Jerry Mac pointed out that is why coaches dont make a big deal about camp stars. You have to translate it to the game. Every team has camp stars and the majority of them never make it to game day. We used to have a bunch of WR who were camp stars that never did anything in the season. One was this small dude who made all these acrobatic catches and now works as a cop in San Leandro (Kenny Shedd? #17).

  66. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

Let’s see…what do we think we know ?

We think Crawford can’t rush the passer, but then he shows he might be able to do that in camp.

We’re told Gordon can’t catch the ball – but maybe he can.

We’re told Criner has great hands – and CLANK !

We’re told Hamilton can’t rush the passer at all – he gets a sack.

    Anything we’re sure of ?

The kid can kick his arsse off. I think he should have a chance to make the team.

I think it’s hilarious that his performance is being judge on his holding skills. LMBAO!!!

Are there any other punter who are holders for the FG kicker? And in jeopardy of being cut if they can’t do it?

    =============================================

Most punters in the league double as holders now. That being said, I’ve never heard of a punter being cut because his holding sucked. They’d just get the backup QB to do it.

As for King: No. He can boom them, but he’s way too inconsistent. Look at his stat line. He alternates 50 and 60-yard kicks with 19-yard clunkers. He’s certainly got potential and I wish him the best wherever he ends up, but there’s no reason to give up the best punter in NFL history for this guy.

I didn’t think Carson should have went deep on that one on one with Ford and Carson should have at least pumped faked to the middle of the field to lose the Cowboy FS. Carson looked fine overall though besides that throw. I think Allen and Knapp pulled Carson a series too soon as well.

Ford looked terrible. That ball Carson threw to him went right through his hands and Ford should have at least deflected it. Ford dropped two god balls from Carson and he looked shaky on special teams.

Ford needs to get his head out of azz and wake up and play football! Catch the ball first and worry about everything else after.

Criner made a huge drop that should have been an easy catch. Ugh.

At least one WR came to play with Streater looking good.

Reece looked good carrying the ball and Miller looked alright.

On offense though. Knapp is already starting to worry me. Not enough explosive plays called to try and score TD’s…it looked conservative.

Knapp better realize it’s about scoring TD’s on a consistent basis in this league these days.

Then we have Pryor. I think Allen and Knapp are trying to fit square pegs into round holes with him.

The opportunity was there for him to win the game, but Knapp didn’t call plays that utilized Pryors strength which is running the football.

Why didn’t Knapp call any read option plays with Pryor running the ball? He should have been calling those plays most of the time, instead of having Pryor drop back 95% of the time.

Granted though, that 3rd team O-Line in front of Pryor looked bad when it came to consistent pass protection.

I see last night’s game as an extension of the second half of the 2011 season. A lot of sheer stupidity and under performance. I refuse to adopt the argument that it was the first pre-season game and all the mistakes and miscues are to be expected.

I watched the 49′ers game last weekend and they resembled a well oiled machine. As a matter of fact, even Rock Cartright ripped off a 19 yd run.

Of course we received the obligatory bone headed INT from CP; as I predicted his performance will change little from last year (sorry worshippers).

We already lack running backs; failure to retain Michael Bush will cause us problems. It was good to see we’ve cut our penalties down, and it seems our defense has improved. It will be good to see Bartelle and Spencer on the field, however.

Our WR corp seems okay except dropped balls are a concern. Just as I predicted, when faced with real competition and just not force fed the ball, DHB, faded away last night.

Pryor looked like a rookie who hasn’t played for almost 2 yrs; his performance was a wash. He needs to get the ball up and cure his delivery problems.

Overall, it looks to be a long season.

Why didn’t Knapp call any read option plays with Pryor running the ball? He should have been calling those plays most of the time, instead of having Pryor drop back 95% of the time.
    ===========
Just a guess that could mean diddly squat but, I think they purposely had Pryor throw as many balls as possible, considering that’s where he needs the most work and reps. We know he can run, and THEY know he can run too. He needs to connect with his receivers MORE, and frequently. What a better chance to get him live passing attempts than Preseason? They wouldn’t be calling the same plays if the game actually mattered.

  208. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

The game was very interesting to say the least. Buckle your seat belts raider fans this is going to be a looooooong year.

Carson palmer picked up where he left off throwing a mind numbing interception before he could make it out of the second offensive series. To be fair carson is in a new offense that doesnt really fit his skill set, and installing a west coast offense is always hard on the offense in year one. The alarming thing (although it is a dull exhausted alrm at this point) Carson threw into double coverage. this has nothing to do with a new offense, this was just a terrible decision. Carson has shown us what his ceiling is. he will never lead this team deep into the playoffs because he simple cant make good enough decisions with the ball to protect leads or sustain a consistent attack. Palmer should start he is the most experienced. however if we should start to look as though we will miss the playoffs bench his behind and lets look to the future.

Lienart should never see the field. he also has shown his ceiling, he can only be mediocre, and just good enough to get you beat. Not only does he have a pop gun for an arm and lead feet, he also has a proclivity for the ill timed int. If carson gets hurt and we are in the playoff race lienart will not be able to close the deal. he should be relegated to the emergency qb role.

Terrel pryor surprised me last night. This kid has worked his tail off since his buck eye days and I saw lots oof positives.

pryor has gone such a long time with playing any kind of meaningful football that he was clearly rushed early. i almost felt as though he wanted to make up for all of the time he missed in just a few downs. he tried to do too much, he left the pocket too early, and his passing was also off target. The good news is as the game wore on he began to settle down and look better and better.

Pryor made all of the right reads from the pocket. Except for the final desperation throw, he only threw the ball to guys that were in single coverage or uncovered!! true he missed but he missed low. he was being very careful not to make the big interception, and i liked that a lot. with more game experience he will not rush throws and hit more receivers, but making the right reads is critical. pryor is very difficult to bring down i the pocket, like big ben and cam newton. pryor need game reps, his talent showed up last night, and he will need live game experience to hone his skill, polish his technique, and gain confidence. If pryor had to play extended time this year he would take his share of lumps but he would also make lots of big plays. The fact that he doesnt want to turn the ball over also would keep the games close.

I would make pryor the first off the bench if palmer gets injured, or if palmer struggles and flops. i would never let lienart in the game, because we know what he is as well. If we loose early lets hand the reigns to pryor, let him have his growing pains and develop. This way next year we can truly compete, after the offense has beeen in place for a full year.

stock down palmer, lienart, they continue to be who they always have been.

stock up pryor, better in game than in practice, showed huge upside, and wants to protect the football

    ————————————-
How about scoring points, you think they want to score points?

    ^^^^^^
Exactly. In the NFL these days….it’s about scoring TD’s on a consistent basis. The Pats look out score everyone in preseason. They don’t give a crap about anything else.

If a team doesn’t score TD’s then that team has no chance of competing consistently.

Meanwhile, Benson’s talking smack about us, saying Green Bay is talking about winning a Super Bowl and we’re talking about winning a playoff game.

That works both ways. Other running backs are vying for a job. He’s talking about how much he deserves to be paid.

SO glad Reggie didn’t sign this jerk.

    ——-

Have to agree. Was open to letting him try out, but seems like an unstable dude. I don’t believe it unless it comes from Reggie. This is a guy that seemed excited about the prospect of coming here just a short while ago and a guy who’s denied to DWIs and punching a bartender in the face. He’s a compulsive liar.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I’m not concerend with just one play. I’m concerned because our 2 starting CBs didn’t play last season. One was injured, and the other was benched. I’m concerned because our young CBs didn’t play well again.

    ROCKET SCIENCE?

Spongey is a clown, and just keeps throwing those INT’s.

True, Knapp had Dallas on the ropes with those 2 DMAC plays back to back. That one screen if he DMAC had cut outside instead of inside, he’d be gone for 6. The defense was on its heels and would’ve bitten on the fake PA pass. I fault Knapp more than I fault CP3 in that situation.

When the QB rolls to one side, he pretty much has to throw it to that side. If the defense rolls with you, you’re fked. Maybe a 2yd completion.
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

As a high school QB, I would roll to my left, following my line, pump faking and making eye contact with my receiver to the left. At the last moment I would throw to my tight, who would be out on the flat 15 yds from the line of scrimmage, and make the play every time.

We will only know when he gets to start 4-5 games in a row.

Honestly i think if he was getting more reps in practice he would be better in the game. the kid impressed me with his knowledge of the playbook, his poise in the pocket, and other wordly play making ability. Yes knowledege of the playbook, he audible d once, and made all of the correct reads once he settled down and started going through his progressions. He is doing all of this on third string reps!!!!

If i were D.a i would play palmer 2 series on friday, and let pryor play the remainder of the game. Ther is no need to play leinart, he knows the offense, and he will never be our future. His snaps are wasted snaps in the pre season.

If we are out of contention what would be the point of continuing to start palmer? he isnt a guy that needs to develop, we would be wasting snaps and robbing t.p of a chance to grow. we would be missing a chance to get an extended look at our potential future.

no excuses he has to get better, but im afraid he has already maxed out

I would say Carson and the passing game/WR’s is the most important area to be better. We all know how talented the WR’s are, BUT they need to help carson out and carson needs to make smart choices. His arm looks live, I will admit those passes ford dropped, carson was surgical with accuracy, even the INT, ford turned around compleetly and slowed down the ball was 3 inches past his fingertips.

After all he had gone over a year without playing real football. people gave palmer a pass when he looked awful coming off the couch, why not afford t.p the same beneifit?

he played much better as the game wore on. he made a few rookie mistakes but all rookies do. he showed enough play making and passing ability to warrant getting the lions share of preseason snaps. he also showed why davis drafted him and why the coaches think he can develop. If we are out of contention hand it over to pryor and lets see what we have.

No you are correct all this BS in here about Palmer is just that angry pissed of fans with nothing better to do than hate on our QB.
Palmer will be a top 10 QB this year it was the first pre season game give them a break.
All of you whining and crying about what happened last night let me spell it out for you semi pros.
37 penalty yards and what about 10 yards rushing in the first half GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
Progress is there we will not be perfect in the first pre season game lets all just hold on to our ass smelling opinions until we get to game 3 of this pre season.

    Don’t bother 666.
The sky is falling and you can’t tell them any different. I can understand the guys upset about the loss. But we did miss 2 FG’s. As far as play calling and TP’s play. I think it is a waste of time to judge the season base off anything you see in preseason. Pryor was force to play like a real QB until things broke down. They didn’t call the wrong plays for him. They called the plays they wanted to see if he could run.

I want to see the 1st team offense (except for DMC) play at least 5 offensive series in the next game or at least until the beginning the 2nd quarter.

They need to ALL be on the same page including Knapp and score a TD or two and gain some confidence as a unit and as a team!

    That is important!
    ++++++++++++++++++

Correct me if I am wrong, but, generally, don’t the starters play the entire first half (except McFadden I am sure) in the second preseason game, and then about 3 quarters in the third preseason game, and then just the first series of the 4th preseason game?

So their 2nd & 3rd stringers are ahead of ours.

    ———————————————————–

I don’t see how that matters.

If we get down to 2nd string players at key offensive poistions like QB or RB, then we aren’t going to the playoffs.

I’m focusing on the starters. Those guys are our playoff chances.

bad accuracy is not something that improves when a QB makes the leap from college to NFL.

    Stat history has shown that.

In the NFL, windows are smaller, coverages tighter, and your accuracy needs to already be above-average, then get better!

I think this depends on what is meant when you use the word “best”

palmer is clearly the most polished and should be the starter for the time being. however i dont know if he is the most talented qb, i think pryor is in that conversation. i dont know if palmer has a higher ceiling than pryor either. Palmer has proven to be your 6-9 win wild card playoff loser of a qb, this will be his legacy it appears. We dont know how good t.p can be yet. he should get 95% of the pre season snaps form here on out, lets not waste snaps on proven commodities like the qbs ahead of him

The Lakers will have a tax bill of around $30 million next July, and in retrospect, will view this season as their salad days — it’s the last one where the tax rate is dollar-for-dollar. Starting in 2013-14 the new “incremental” tax takes over, where being $30 million above the tax line will mean paying a whopping $85 million tax bill.

And it gets worse. Starting in 2014-15 teams will pay an even higher rate for being repeat offenders — defined as paying tax in at least three of the four previous seasons. A team $30 million over the tax line will pay — brace yourself — an additional $115 million in luxury tax.

After adding up their payroll, luxury tax bill, and revenue sharing contribution (projected to be $49.4 million in 2013-14), even the Lakers have to stop to consider whether this simply can be written off as the cost of doing business — and that’s the future if they’re paying players with salaries like Bryant, Howard, Gasol and Nash.

CPalmer really looked pretty good. The interception could’ve — and should’ve — been avoided, by releasing the ball on time. Looking-off the Safety could have helped, but was not necessary had the ball left timely. See: Jason Campbell. CP3 will be high-risk, high-reward when he gets the match-ups. Me likes.

Leinart = ZZZZZzzzzzz. The combination of Leinart and Knapp is mind-numbing. If it weren’t for the crowd, I would’ve fallen asleep in my seat.

Matt Leinart will do what he does…dink (and rarely dunk) until he goes down with a shoulder injury. TPryor better get some time with the #2’s soon, because (gulp) he will likely see some playing time this season.

The O-line looked OK. Not much too high or low. Obviously, the health of Wiz2.0 means more than anything else right now. Khalif Barnes looked pretty good in space.

As usual when healthy, DMC looked like the best RB in the NFL. I will warily draft him in FFL…and win it all if he stays healthy. And cry if he goes down. Kinda like the real Raiders.

WR’s = Fail. Period. Jacoby Lee Ford should’ve caught a few he didn’t…or made sure the other guy didn’t get the Int. He’ll probably be fine.

DeMoore better get/stay healthy. Streater and Criner will continue to have their own ups-and-downs…but we’re going to need them both to play like Veterans real soon.

DVD? If he’s still a step behind in 2-weeks, we’ve got problems. Otherwise, he’s on track. This is only his 2nd camp, after all.

I’m more worried about Jacoby Lee Ford playing like a 2nd year Pro than DVD. I also wonder about Chekwa’s football smarts, after watching that punt coverage disaster. Like them or not, our YOUNG CB’s have big work to do. Bartell out there after one padded practice?

Tommy Kelly and Lamar Houston are going to have big years for us. The Raiders LB corps will become an underrated force…and the run will be addressed and tackled (pun intended).

The Raiders will be a top-7 D this season if the DB’s shape into something. If they look like last night, we’re looking at mid-20’s again. I have faith though, that DA, Tarver, et al, will get them coached-up.

Lots to be optimistic about! Like usual.

    Mistic,

Pryor is not a rookie. Can’t defend him with that.

Kid has had close to 70 NFL practices by now, and by all accounts, has not improved one iota in that time.

He is who he is, an athlete who can’t pass well.
    …………..

he joined the team after the season started, and was 3rd on the depth chart. you may not know tis but the 3rd string qb doesnt get any reps in practice. he had no training camp or pre season last year either. he had no qb coach last year, and is learning a new offense for 2nd time in 2 years.

    he is essentailly a rookie

  454. Silverandblack666 Says:

“Luck, RGIII and Tannehill played with 1st teamers. Not a fair comparison. Thank God Pryor has wheels.”

Use some logic here guy the QB’s you mentioned all played against the first team as well. So what if Pryor has 3rd string OL he was playing against 3rd string defense.

Put Luck in there against a 3rd string defense and tell me what happens then.

Stop the excuse making. You throw a ball 3 yards behind receivers, at their feet, don’t make multiple reads…

Pryor was also going against a 3RD STRING DEFENSE.

  458. Silverandblack666 Says:

“He is who he is, an athlete who can’t pass well.”

He could have spent all off season working on his throwing motion and accuracy with anyone

RE: Jacoby Ford. Ever since CP came in and immediately started to pine about how great DMoore can be as receiver, Ford has changed his attitude toward this qb and his team. He got his “feeling hurt”. He needs to grow up and start playing like a professional football player or ReggieMac needs to move him out. His indifferent attitude is really annoying and detrimental to the moral of this team. Not going after the long ball that was intercepted; and then dropping two back-to-back great passes that were in his hands indicates that he is not in harmony with the CP. I think it is because he is still pouting about CP comments. He lost the S.D. game for us when he dropped that critical 1st down pass because he did not GO AFTER IT. I am extremely disappointed in him because he has the potential.

    1. accuracy suffers when you are learning a new offense, because you are not sure about what you are seeing or where your own guys will be. he also looked very rushed and looked a bit tentative trying to avoid picks. On top of that the rust factor of not plying football showed up. These also will affect accuracy. as he learns the offense and gets comfortable with the playing time he is allotted he will improve his accuracy.

    2. running the scout team means you are simulating the other teams offense, not running your own. he hast had the reps he needs running this offense to accurately asses his game.

Foe his limited practice reps, and coming off the longest period of inactivity of his young career and being a rookie, i think 8-15 50 yards passing and 22 yards rushing were all every encouraging signs.’

Most of all he showed he will make the right read and protect the football. Something palmer has yet to figure out.

    —————————–

Wrong. At this point, as a starting WR in the NFL, it no longer matters where one was drafted.

Jacoby Lee Ford has shown incredible hands, and a knack for getting the ball (and holding it)…that’s why he’s starting.

I expect the same kind of ability to catch the ball from all starting WR’s — meaning, they all should be relied upon to catch the ball, more than worried about for dropping it.

Much like Louis Murphy…I cringe, and worry about Ford’s hands every time he’s the target. I worry more about Jacoby Lee Ford now than I do for DHB, and way more than for DeMoore.

Jacoby needs to watch over his shoulder at WR…at the big rookies who want his job. He’d be a great #4 WR, while handling kick and punt team duties. Of course, I’d prefer if he played as well as we need and expect him to…but I’m all about whoever can do the job best being the starter. Much more of the Jacoby Lee Ford act, and his future as a starter will fade away with his missed chances.

I am sure Reggie and Dennis are just looking at Pryor as a cheap 3rd string QB for this year, who, unless he starts to look at least like a serviceable backup QB by the end of the season, will be either cut or told to switch to TE in the offseason.

Just a wasted 3rd round pick on a team that could have gotten a decent starter on the line, or LBer, by a guy who didn’t know QBs very well….how many good QBs did Al draft over his last oh, I don’t know, 35 years?

  525. HayesDaze37 Says:

A perfect throw would’ve been released earlier, before the Safety read & reacted to the play. But, the INT should’ve been avoided by Jacoby either catching, or deflecting, the ball.

Cowboys safety Gerald Sensabaugh on Carson Palmer INT Monday night: “I just got a good read on the quarterback. He overthrew him.”
    ——————————————————-

Not sure exactly what happend, to me Ford looks like he could of made the catch, but I think Palmer shouldn’t of even thrown that pass

  527. CJ Legend 34 Says:

I know this may sound crazy to some, but what Ford needs to do is slow down, concentrate and stop playing so fast. He does not look to be in rythm at all. He needs to go back to the fundamentals of catch the ball first, secure, then run!

Sounds simple enough but that is really what he needs to do. He is looking up field to make the play before he secures the ball.

Now the worse play he made was jogging to make a tackle on an INT, unless the coaches told him to stay clear because of his injuries.

  528. bcz24 Says:

Here are a few things I saw from last night, in no particular order. I’m sure this has all been talked about all day, but its my turn :)

    Offense:
    1. A healthy Darren McFadden is a top 3 back in the NFL. If the dude ever manages 16 games he will have exceed 2500 all purpose yards.

    2. Right read by Palmer on the INT, but he over threw it, not by much though. Ford should have fought for it, he could have at least deflected it.

    3. Ford needs to get his head out of his a$$ and become more focused. Take some lessons from DHB on how to be an NFL player.

    4. Pryor looked bad. Very bad. BUT he had very little time in the pocket, our 3rd team oline looked absolutely awful, those guys arent making the team though. I would like to TP run with the 2nd team oline for a drive or 2 Friday.

    5. Leinart looked like a very capable backup, and the 2nd team OLine looked pretty good.

    Defense:
    1. Our DLine, if they play with that much focus all year, is going to wreak havoc on opponents.

    2. Phil Wheeler looked a HELL of a lot better than Wimbley. I truly believe he is an upgrade there. Our LB’s as a unit were a pleasant surprise last night, after all the talk about how bad they are gonna be, and how thin we are there.

    3. Secondary didn’t look horrible, nice coverage for the most part (DVD didn’t live up to the hype he has gotten thus far) Bartell got beat by Dez on a play that is almost impossible to defend. They need some work, but they played better than advertised IMO.

    4. That was the best tackling I have seen as team in as long as I can remember. Form tackling, wrap and drive your man to the turf, and get 11 hats on the ball. That is the #1 improvement I see over last year.

    Spec Teams:

Ford looked terrible, gotta think King is holding wrong for both kickers to miss relatively easy kicks, both missing wide right.

Happy about the penalties. We played a fairly disciplined game. We allowed 202 yards and 3 points, and that is pretty much enough to win 99 times out of 100. Excited to see the game Friday, and see how we adjust and improve.

Ford is not going to have many balls thrown his way if he does not aggressively go after them if that were D Moore he would have went up for the ball and came down with it or batted it down negating the INT.

So many QB’s throw the ball down field into double coverage in confidence that the receiver will go up for the ball (See Detroit Lions) but if your WR is going to play with alligator arms then your right don’t even throw the ball.

Lets be real here Palmer is trying to build confidence between himself and the wide outs by putting the ball up there he is trusting that the WR will at least make a play on the ball.

    *************
When Palmer made the read Ford had a step on his man, the CB recovered very well. It was man coverage single high safety, and lets face it Sensebaugh is not a world class safety, he made an outstanding read and got there in time. The ball wasn’t overthrown that badly, Ford SHOULD have gotten a hand on it. DHB or Moore would have.

Sure Dell, like I said, he will have the rest of the season…..because he is a cheap 3rd string QB.

He will not get much work with the coaches this season, because they know what he is, and they have to make sure Palmer and Leinart are ready. So really, as it has been over the past 12 months, the work he needs to do will be on his own time. He will either hire a QB coach and work on it on his own time, or he will choose to play PS3 or Xbox and disappear.

Maybe he has a QB coach now, I know he worked with George Whitfield jr prior to the supp draft, but I have not heard that he has anyone helping him now….and if what we saw last night was Pryor WITH the help of a QB coach, then might as well cut him now lol.

    @ Mistic

Palmer isn’t perfect, but he’s BY FAR the best qb we have !!
    ==========

    #####################################################

Great idea genius. Let’s not give the team that is actually going to play this year any preseason practice so that our 3rd string QB can play. Dude, you might be the biggest troll on here!!
    ==============

UMmmmm maybe you dont watch much football, but your starting qb rarely plays more than 2 series in most pre season games. so when palmer exits let pryor take the reigns for the remainder of that game. Lienart doesnt need the game reps, as he already knows this offense, having played in it last year.
    ————
    You serious? total ignorance.
Starter will get likely 4 series next week, and play possibly into the 3rd qtr week 3, depending on play.

And did you really just say the backup qb, the guy who will take over for the starter, if he goes down, shouldn’t get preseason reps? Because HE KNOWS THE OFFENSE?

Just go in, cold? Stupid comment.

Besides, it’s Lienart. He needs all the reps he can possibly get. Obviously you’ve never seen him play.

No, Dakota. throw wouldn’t have been as pretty, but would have netted the same result

go re-watch the Patriots game from last year. Ford streaking down the sideline, JCamp throws a 40 yarder from his own endzone. Smurfman makes zero attempt to make a play on the football or go into defensive back mode. Result = interception

Q: What do they all have in common?
    A: A tenured cohesive environment

We need time to develop the talent, strategy, playbook etc and it won’t come right away. We can over analyze that horrible game last night, but its meaningless. The the truth is that we are a young, hungry team with good talent in the right spots and the ability to be disruptive. Mystic, Let’s just call it like it is. All you want to see are black QB’s and you talk ‘em up despite what any experts or analysts say about them and despite how they actually perform.

I liked JC but he’s just “a guy”. Jamarcus sucked. It is widely considered by almost everyone that he’s the biggest bust in NFL history.

Pryor may be good someday but he isn’t right now.

Talk about Cam Newton or Warren Moon or something instead of refusing to admit that it is possible for a black QB is not posessed of all world talent and accomplishments.

It actually IS possible that a black QB is not good.
    ===================

    racist trash.

Pryor is showing that he does have a ton of upside. he needs game reps and I want him to succeed because of this. why do you notice the color of his skin, and not his talent

F U buddy. YOU are the racist dik face.

You tout Jamarcus Russell, Jason Campbell and Terrelle Pryor as these great QB’s. WHY? Never seen you tout anyone else as even worthy of throwing a football…all this over the top excuses for why Russell failed, how JC is the second coming and now the greatness of Pryor. WHY IS THAT?

I am merley questioning your over the top praise of these guys cuz it doesn’t make any sense.

Warren Moon was great QB, Doug Williams won a SB, and did you notice my racist self just praised Cam Newton too? Yeah. What a racist. BTW: I loved Vince Freaking Evans too.

You are the one noticing skin color not me. Just be honest as to why you are so over the top praising ONLY black Qb’s.

just being a realist and keeping it 100%.

we havnt made the playoffs in a decade, our qb position has been a mess for most of that time. From the way our qb played lst year 16 picks in 9 starts, and comparing that too his start in preseason it isnt encouraging.

we have a new coach a new front office and many new players, this is a rebuild. i dont see any point in starting a qb that has proven to be a turn over machine if we have a slow start. we were shut out last night palmer threw his first pick in only 3-4 pass attempts, it looks like this will be a long year.

  634. TxRaider210 Says:

If and when the time comes that we are mathematically eliminated from Playoff contention…then and only then do we talk of rebuilding.

With CPalmer, DMC, DHB and DeMoore all on the field at the same time, this Offense will be one of the best in the NFL. Keep them healthy, and fock rebuilding…win now.

  652. Chris in NY Says:

    Regarding last night’s game …

    THE GOOD:
    - Darren McFadden looks awesome. Best back in the league and best player on this team, hands down.

    - The Run D. I think a new scheme and better defensive coaching is mostly what is needed to fix our run D. I think we’ll have that this year and teams are going to have a tough time against our very powerful front-4.

    - Rod Streater. Based on camp reports and his performance last night, kid has already earned a roster spot. How many undrafted rookies can you say that about after the first exhibition game?

    - Mike Mitchell. I’ve been a Mitchell defender since Al made the pick. Reports are he’s been impressive this camp and last night I saw consistent glimpses of the guy from the YouTube highlight reel. It’s not really the gift interception Orton threw him. He also decked Stephen McGee on a blitz, btw. It was really just the overall speed, aggressiveness and decisiveness with which he played the game. He really jumped off the screen to me during his time on the field. He was clearly the best player on the field while he was in the game.

    - Terrelle Pryor’s athleticism. Kid just has an impressive size, speed and instinctual elusiveness. If QB doesn’t work out for him, I think he’s a realistic and potentially great WR/TE prospect. I think the Raiders should consider using him this season like the Steelers used Kordell “Slash” Stewart his first few seasons in the league.

    - Escaped with no major injuries. Knock on wood.

    THE BAD:
    - Jacoby Ford had a rough night. It’s well documented. But it’s one preseason game and Ford has shown me plenty of ability in his young pro career. I’m honestly not at all worried about it. A bad preseason game … who really cares.

    - WR depth. I’m really second-guessing the decision to trade Louis Murphy right now. Guy was the best WR on the team for two years before injury derailed him in 2011. If he were here I’d have no reservations about him if he had to fill in as a starter. Definitely a better option than Criner, IMO, and better-suited than Ford to fill in for Moore on the outside if needed. Hopefully Eddie McGee can come back soon and show us something.

    - The offense scoring ZERO points. Not going to go crazy here. It’s one preseason game in which the starters played a couple of series. But I was not a big fan of the Knapp hiring. As I have posted many, many times, I felt the firing of Hue Jackson was a mistake and that we would miss his abilities as an offensive coach and playcaller. I really felt we should’ve kept Hue and hired a quality DC because the bottom-ranked D is really what kept us out of the playoffs last year. For the most part I like what Dennis Allen is doing, but it does concern me that we scored ZERO points in our first game without Hue and looked pretty discombobulated at times. Not a big deal, but bears watching.

    - Lonyae Miller. I was really disappointed. Liked Miller’s game alot at Fresno but he just looked slow and lackluster last night.

    - Our edge pass rush. I think we may miss Wimbley more than people realize this season. We’ve got a bunch of big, strong, powerful dudes on our d-line, but probably no good speed pass-rush guy on the edge. Wimbley didn’t rack up a ton of sacks, but he was very good at applying quick pressure off the edge that broke the QBs concentration and/or forced him into the surge of our DTs up the middle. A major hole on this roster right now.

    THE UGLY:
    - The dirt infield running across the Raiders field. It’s really a disgrace and embarrassment that the Raiders are still playing on that surface. Forget the aesthetic awfulness of it, but to expect players to run back and forth between two different playing surfaces and make quick, decisive cuts is a joke. It’s a real injury risk and makes players tentative. It’s something DA needs to take into account when alotting playing time in our 3rd exhibition game at home, which is normally when you play starter’s the longest. But I’d rather come out of that game healthy than worry about a few extra preseason series. Can’t stand that field.

rebuild mode means get rid of your good veterans and give the job to worse players?

    Nobody does that.

There is no such thing as “full rebuild” mode in the NFL. Well, except for the Bucs trying it last year (all young players) and being TERRIBLE.

Teams are constantly, year by year, rebuilding, shuffling, trying to get better. Some teams just do a better job at it than others.

  655. alex7 Says:

Umm, Kerry Collins and Hasselbeck were legit NFL starters for close to a decade. Not exactly one or two-year wonders.

Mistic is just messing with you people.

    Calm down.

You’re right. I was just responding to being called racist trash.

Does anybody know me, or what skin color I am? I could be a person of any color or a mix of different ones as far as anyone knows.

I have to question the motivation behind the over the top promotion of guys like Russell, JC and now Pryor as these ultra talented QB’s.

I WISH Russell had been a great QB for us. He had my unbridled support. I liked him coming out of LSU. I also thought JC was good for us.

I’m so racist I bought a Cliff Branch “heritage” jersey.

I don’t have issue with ANY race, creed, or color. Except polkadot people. They just scare me.

For the love of god can we stop maiing excuses for palmers picks already?!?!?

If it was a perfect pass it would have landed in fords hands, it was an errant throw and a poor read and as a result it was picked.

Just admit it and move on

Jamarcus Russell was a lazy pos and the biggest bust in NFL history and that can’t be blamed on Al Davis or anyone but himself.

Jason Campbell is an NFL backup who is fighting for the # 2 spot with Josh McCown and is considered by at least 90 % of the sports viewing public to be an average at best QB.

Just admit that and move on.
