Report: Benson said Raiders tried to sign him

Share

Veteran running back Cedric Benson told FoxSportsWisconsin.com he signed with the Green Bay Packers for a chance to win the Super Bowl and that the Raiders and Detroit Lions had also made offers.

“Both teams needed backs,’’ Benson said.

The Raiders’ interest, never confirmed by team officials, had been speculated for months and made sense of late given injuries to running backs Taiwan Jones (hamstring) and Mike Goodson (neck).

With Jones and and Goodson inactive in the preseason opener against Dallas, Lonyae Miller replaced starter Darren McFadden after three plays and gained 39 yards on 15 carries with a long run of seven yards.

Rashawn Jackson, listed as a fullback, came on late and carried three times for eight yards.

The early stages of the new regime with Reggie McKenzie as general manager and Dennis Allen have seemed to indicate a preference for developing young talent rather than veteran players with high miles.

Benson, 29, has gained more than 1,000 yards in each of the last three seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals but in the last two years has averaged under 4 yards per carry, gaining 3.9 yards per attempt last season and 3.5 in 2010.

With James Starks sidelined indefinitely with turf toe, Benson could evolve as Green Bay’s primary back.

That was unlikely to happen in Oakland, where McFadden looked healthy and explosive in the preseason opener with two rushes for 20 yards and gaining 18 yards on a screen pass on the first three plays from scrimmage.

Jones is listed as day-to-day with his hamstring strain and Goodson, who taken to the hospital last week with a neck injury, has no structural damage and is expected to return before the end of preseason.

Mystic, Let’s just call it like it is. All you want to see are black QB’s and you talk ‘em up despite what any experts or analysts say about them and despite how they actually perform.

I liked JC but he’s just “a guy”. Jamarcus sucked. It is widely considered by almost everyone that he’s the biggest bust in NFL history.

Pryor may be good someday but he isn’t right now.

Talk about Cam Newton or Warren Moon or something instead of refusing to admit that it is possible for a black QB is not posessed of all world talent and accomplishments.

It actually IS possible that a black QB is not good.
    ===================

    racist trash.

Pryor is showing that he does have a ton of upside. he needs game reps and I want him to succeed because of this. why do you notice the color of his skin, and not his talent

F U buddy. YOU are the racist dik face.

You tout Jamarcus Russell, Jason Campbell and Terrelle Pryor as these great QB’s. WHY? Never seen you tout anyone else as even worthy of throwing a football…all this over the top excuses for why Russell failed, how JC is the second coming and now the greatness of Pryor. WHY IS THAT?

I am merley questioning your over the top praise of these guys cuz it doesn’t make any sense.

Warren Moon was great QB, Doug Williams won a SB, and did you notice my racist self just praised Cam Newton too? Yeah. What a racist. BTW: I loved Vince Freaking Evans too.

You are the one noticing skin color not me. Just be honest as to why you are so over the top praising ONLY black Qb’s.

The best thing about the game last night is that the Raiders did not look like the Raiders have always looked over the last 35 years I have been a fan. Opposing RBs were not ripping off 10 yards a pop in the second half, no 10 yard penalties on 3rd and 9, and they have a QB that seemed to be showing a ton of leadership when he was shown on the sideline helping out guys like Ford and Pryor.

  • PurpleDrank81

My Pick has been Streater since the beginning of Training Camp…Unless 1 of our current starters are out w/ Injury (Hopefully Not) Streater wont crack the starting 2 but with Ford not having a great camp I can see Streater sneak up to 3wr

Maybe if we were opening up NEXT Monday Night….. There’s still 3 more games to go and LOTS of camp left. Streater looked great, and he’ll make the squad. In the end, I don’t really care who’s starting as long as they CATCH THE FU**ING BALL (Ford)….
I won’t jump to conclusions JUST yet though. Criner’s got time to put it together as well.

Notice how Pryor’s int is conveniently omitted by the person who stated “it is never ok no matter when or where it happens on the field”.
    ==============

not at all i have mentioned his pick that cam in desperation time on a hail mary. i dont penalize qbs with ints on hil mary attempts because you will have to force the ball as you are out of downs and time.

Outside of that desperate moment he didnt force a single pass…….but of palmer did

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

For the love of god can we stop maiing excuses for palmers picks already?!?!?

If it was a perfect pass it would have landed in fords hands, it was an errant throw and a poor read and as a result it was picked.

Just admit it and move on

  • TxRaider210

    O
I think Criner just had the jitters a bit man, look for a good game in AZ from him.

  • TxRaider210

I’ll choose to believe that Palmer’s throw was on the money, and he was testing Ford’s skills in tight coverage. Kool-aid indeed!

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

if we get off to a slow start, 0-4, 0-3,1-3 or something similar it will be time to go into full rebuild mode. I am sure we will be in full rebuild mode before this year is out. Once we are eliminated from contetnion pull the plug on palmer and evaluate pryor by giving him the rest of the starts for the year.

D.A can avoid media heat by using the fact that we are rebuilding, and need to know what we have at qb before the draft. Im afraid the clock is ticking on palmer and we know lienart is the new kyle boller, only with a much weaker arm.

just being a realist and keeping it 100%.

we havnt made the playoffs in a decade, our qb position has been a mess for most of that time. From the way our qb played lst year 16 picks in 9 starts, and comparing that too his start in preseason it isnt encouraging.

we have a new coach a new front office and many new players, this is a rebuild. i dont see any point in starting a qb that has proven to be a turn over machine if we have a slow start. we were shut out last night palmer threw his first pick in only 3-4 pass attempts, it looks like this will be a long year.

  • TxRaider210

If a person is Palmer, why not make a tough throw in the PRE-SEASON, he’s only trying to make himself better. If he checks down, it’s the easy way out, but does that help his game at all?

im not so sure, the broncos and chiefs looks vastly improved. We are installing new schemes on both sides of the ball and still trying o figure out who will be a part of this team moving forward. that evaluation includes the qb.

  • A quick observation from deep in the 909…..

First team offense…..B-… McFadden is good to go….CP3…Should know better to throw into safety over top..O-line respectable…

Defense….Overall..I liked it.. 1st., 2nd, and 3rd. team did well.. Husled and made plays…

    T. Pryor, needs a whole lot of 60 grit, before he’s ready for a wet sand….

The Run Away Beer Truck, made a very impressive block. Mowing his guy back 10 yards, on one run play…

    Streeter is a KEEPER…

Whoever assigned #2 to the back up Punter, King. Should have to clean the heads at the Coli….

This reminds me very much of the time gruden inherited jeff george. the qb with the amazing arm and throws the prettiest deep ball, like peole say about palmer. Only I thik jg was better at avoiding picks than palmer is.

Gruden kept him on as a stop gap until he got his guy, i see big mack and Da doing the same. Please dont think that they dont notice the picks or find them alarming.

After spending all of that time with guys like rodgers, and schaub every coach on that staff knows that ints will kill your season.

palmer is one a try out basis this year

  • TxRaider210

A tryout basis! LMAO Palmer has the wheel dude, TP is in the back-seat for now.

  • Settle down on the Palmer pick as well, it was one play, CP made a bad decision, it’s not his first and it won’t be his last, face it and move on.

I’m a big Palmer fan, I’m pretty certain he’s going to have a very good season for us, so certain that I can accept the fact that he made a bad play in a pre-season game and not go crazy trying to defend or justify him, he’ll take care of doubters himself.

  • HayesDaze37

CPalmer is the LEAST of our problems…unless he goes down for the count. THAT’S being a realist. There are other Players we need to worry about much more than a healthy Palmer.

  • Raider E

No excuses, but watch the replay, had to be a perfectly thrown ball and it nearly was one. Just a couple inches out of Ford’s reach. I dont mind living by the sword and dying by the sword. Palmer is a Gunslinger. Like it or not. He is what he is….

If we can all admit that palmer was up & down in his career with cincy it would be honest.

If we can all admit that 16 picks in 9 starts is horrific, it would also be honest.

cant we admit that palmer has a lot to prove, and has to show he isnt as washed up as he looked last year and in last nights game?

lots of qbs have had a break out season or 2 only to crash back to earth.

Stan humphries, don majkowski, neal oddonnel, kerry collins, matt hasselbeck, matt cassel, and the list could go on forever.

It may be time to realize that palmers probowl form was an anomaly, has he hasnt resembled anything near that 06 form in recent times, including last night

Anybody calling for rebuild mode is off their rocker.

If and when the time comes that we are mathematically eliminated from Playoff contention…then and only then do we talk of rebuilding.

With CPalmer, DMC, DHB and DeMoore all on the field at the same time, this Offense will be one of the best in the NFL. Keep them healthy, and fock rebuilding…win now.
