Five Raiders’ players to watch

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, August 17th, 2012 at 6:21 pm in Oakland Raiders.

A graphic element filed to the Web this afternoon . . .

Five players to keep an eye on when the Raiders visit the Arizona Cardinals Friday night:

– Running back Mike Goodson: A chance for fans to see what those at training camp have watched until his recent neck injury. An exciting, slashing versatile back and worthy backup to Darren McFadden.

– Tight end Richard Gordon: With Brandon Myers out with shoulder injury, Gordon assumes the starting role over David Ausberry largely on his blocking skills, but his pass catching skills are improving.

– Linebacker Chad Kilgore: An addition to the roster during training camp from Northwest Missouri State, Kilgore was cited by coach Dennis Allen as a player who has flashed of late because of his aggressiveness, tackling skill and special teams prowess.

– DT Christo Bilukidi: The Raiders’ sixth-round draft pick drew praise from Allen for his run-stopping skill against Dallas and is a candidate to become the fourth defensive tackle in the Richard Seymour-Tommy Kelly-Desmond Bryant rotation.

– QB Matt Leinart: Leinart had a solid game against Dallas (11-for-16, 89 yards) and has an iron grip on the job as backup to Carson Palmer. Leinart washed out in Arizona, and here’s a chance to show his former team he can still be an effective NFL quarterback.

Jerry, whats the word on Wade?

  5. Just Fire Baby Says:

When rewatching the game, it was obvious Kilgore was better than the others he was playing against.

He should be playing earlier in the game today.

  6. RaiderRockstar Says:

    no Crawford or Cumbie??

    what a shame.

agreed with Thec that Bilukidi & Hamilton will see plenty of action tonight

  7. Thec Says:

Wish we had of tried to get Jemeel McClain from balt.

He would make an excellent mike in this D

    str8t beast…

  8. RaiderRockstar Says:

    Dennis Allen likes Rick Gordon.

Will Ausberry or Humphrey shine tonight and show the staff they are serious about competing for the starting TE job?

If Gordon doesnt do much in the next 2 games, I think Brandon Myers wins by default. Same could be said of Miles Burris. Aaron Curry will be starter the day he’s healthy enough, unless Burris does something positive to catch the coaches attention

  9. Thec Says:

announcer in the det vs balt game just mentioo ned the det drive to win in oakland…ugh

  10. Thec Says:

Crawford is gonna get his today.

  11. RaiderRockstar Says:

I’m rooting for Hamilton & Kilgore to be the 52nd & 53rd guys on the 53-man roster … Oakland could use a few more Podunkers!

  12. Just Fire Baby Says:

Jonathan Stewart with a little ding, just adds more value to Deangelo Williams in the FF world.

OK, here’s what I liked about the pace of the Panther O.

There was a play where Kimmy completed a pass for a nice gain of about 15 yards that ended with the ball carrier going out of bounds.

There was no pounding the chest, head bobbing, fist pumping or any celebration whatsoever.

No. The Panther who made the play, flipped the ball to an official and then turned to run back to the huddle.

This tells me they’re a well coached squad that understands it’s important to get back quickly, get the next play set and give the QB as much time as possible to look over the opposing defense.

Sometimes a little flip of the ball to an official and the pace of an offense can be quite revealing, especially in a pre-season game.

Which leads me to the third part of this post, which I will put up shortly…

NFL Gamepass is the greatest thing ever – now for the first time in my life I can watch my beloved Raiders games live in Australia. I’m even fired up about the preseason, watched the Monday night opener at work on Tuesday (down under time!)
Was really impresseed with Streater – rangy and smooth over the middle, made me think of my all-time favourite Timmy Brown crossing over the middle like he was floating, totally fearless (unlike poor Jacoby Ford – he was short-arming and hearing footsteps). Leinart looked very composed, feel confident he could step in if required this year.
    GO RAIDERS!

    No problem with that.

Them Ivy leaguers play rugby and lacrosse and other things.

  41. Just Fire Baby Says:

Can we go to those websites now or do they only flip the switch at kickoff?

I am hoping the google TV works for it, don’t really want to watch it on the PC.

  47. AussieRaiderRosco Says:

wow, that’s impressive commitment! Is NFL big over there? Very little support in Australia – I’m always disappointed when I have to explain to kids in my class why I have framed autographed gridiron pictures hanging up in my classroom.

KK is right. Teams like the Patriots and GB score on their first possession. We should too if you want to be considered elite. Thats all KK wants.
    __________________________________________
    Ridiculous comment. Borderline moronic.
    Preseason?
Lots of teams are sitting players on both sides of the ball due to dings and just wanting to see how certain players react.
And wrong. Pats didn’t score until the 3rd qtr. Pack scored in second qtr.

Do either one of you have a clue?
    __________________

GB and NO have already scored on the first possession in preseason. You guys should research or know what your posting before you start.

Also, the point is to want and strive for perfection. Our team and fans should want perfection.

    Why not?

    58. I like you’re wife already. You on the other hand….

    Fair enough – big rivalry.
I reckon Al Davis would have drafted Nic Naitnui to play tight end if he ever saw an Eagles game!

  64. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

OK, as mentioned, I was impressed by Deangelo Williams and the PACE of the Carolina offense.

Been watching football for decades now and as I get older and slower (but hopefully wiser), I realize the importance of PACE to an offense.

I think Chip K and the Oregon Ducks are on to something with their phrenetic fast paced attack.

Kind of like having a continual fast break attack in hoops.

They’re the Paul Westhead/Loyola Marymount of the NCAA, and I think the Beaver style of attack reaped dividends.

Can an extremely fast paced attack like that work in the NFL ?

    I think so.

We’ve seen evidence of this when the no huddle is used extensively.

Peyton Manning in particular is excellent at this.

When you have New York Giant Linebackers faking injury to slow down an opposing offense, that’s indicative that when executed properly – the fast break offense will put extreme pressure on a defense.

Will set up mismatches to be exploited and will wear defenders down.

I think we’re going to see more of this type of attack as football continually evolves.

Now, it’s TIME FOR RAIDER FOOTBALL !
