Raiders lose to Cardinals, hopeful of not losing players to injury

The Raiders lost to the Arizona Cardinals on Friday night, 31-27, in an exhibition game. More important, for now, is that the injuries to wide receivers Jacoby Ford and Darrius Heyward-Bey, backup quarterback Matt Leinart and backup running back Mike Goodson don’t appear to be very serious.
For more, you will have to read beat writer Jerry McDonald’s stories and notes whenever he files. He attended the game. I stayed behind and monitored the proceedings from here. Therefore, I won’t use any quotes that I wasn’t present to garner.
Ford left the game early on after getting hurt while tackled out of bounds at the end of a reception. He was taken to the locker room and returned on crutches.
Leinart was hit late at the end of a play on which a penalty was assessed, and he suffered an injury to the right index finger. Fortunately for Leinart and the Raiders, the injury is on Leinart’s non-throwing hand, and he only needed stitches to repair the damage.
Heyward-Bey hurt a shoulder at some point in the game. Goodson suffered a chest injury on the second of his two fumbles in the game, and he was taken to the locker room for observation.
All in all, Raiders coach Dennis Allen can take a deep breath and sigh over not losing any key players for the season. The players will be re-evaluated Saturday, at which time updates will be posted.

– The Raiders defense looked hopeless on the Cardinals first drive, with the Cardinals marching 41 yards on seven plays on a drive that culmiated with a touchdown.
From there, the Raiders defense stiffened and overpowered the Cardinals first-team offense. The key came when defensive coordinator Jason Tarver turned loose his players on a dizzying array of blitzes and stunts.
Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb was under pressure most of the time, waiting to be sacked and looking to throw the ball anywhere before he got decked.
It was refreshing to see so many Raiders players blitzing. Every linebacker blitzed at some point, along with safety Tyvon Branch and others.

– Goodson fumbled seven times on 125 touches when he played for the Carolina Panthers. He fumbled twice on eight touches Friday night.
That’s not what the Raiders envisioned when they traded for him in the offseason. Then again, this was Goodson’s first game, and it came less than two weeks after he suffered a neck injury.
Still, Allen is waiting for Goodson or Taiwan Jones to assert himself as the clear-cut successor to Michael Bush as Darren McFadden’s primary backup.
Jones missed Friday’s game, and he has yet to play in a game so far. So, Allen isn’t all that much closer to knowing what he has in Goodson and Jones than he was at the start of camp.

– Second-year player DeMarcus Van Dyke shined in the early part of training camp, running with receivers, breaking up pass after pass, being in place to make open-field tackles.
His play in the first two games is another matter. On Friday, he allowed completions of 30 and 31 yards, whiffed on a tackle on a run play at the 10-yard line, with the back rolling in for a touchdown, and missed another opportunity to make a play in the run game.
On the flip side, second-year cornerback Chimdi Chekwa intercepted a pass and played well throughout the game, with few exceptions.

– Quarterback Carson Palmer misfired on his first two passes of the game, and he didn’t get much better as the game progressed.
Palmer completed 13 of 24 passes for 107 yards and no touchdowns, while being intercepted once. In fairness, Palmer had back-to-back passes in the end zone that were catchable.
Darrius Heyward-Bey couldn’t hold on to the first one. Rod Streater was interfered with on the second one.
On the interception, Palmer forced a ball into tight coverage, with tight end Richard Gordon having a slim chance of making a play on the ball.
As it were, the ball sailed into the hands of a Cardinals defender, and it was returned just shy of the Raiders goal line.

– Streater was the star of Oakland’s first game, with six receptions for 66 yards. He made a strong case for that honor Friday night with seven receptions for 43 yards.
Also, Streater chased down the Arizona defender on the interception and saved a touchdown, in addition to almost recovering one of Goodson’s fumbles.
With Ford and Denarius Moore battling injuries, Streater is making the most of his playing time and stating his case for playing time once the regular season begins.

– Exhibition games are an ideal time to work on things that come up during the regular season.
Hence, not sure why Allen felt compelled to lete Sebastian Janikowski attempt an 18-yard field goal when he had an opportunity to work on a fourth-and-goal play from the 1-yard line.
He also allowed Eddy Carmona to kick a 53-yard field goal late in the game, even though Carmona has no chance of making the 53-man roster.
Again, why not go for the first down on fourth-and-five? That’s something that’s going to come up in a regular-season game, when Carmona is on the practice squad, with another team or out of the NFL.

– How to increase your chances of making the opening-day roster? Cue the tape and watch first-year linebacker Carl Ihenacho for his strip-sack of the quarterback late in the third quarter.
Ihenacho got to Ryan Lindley with a fierce rush, used one hand to grab the quarterback and the other to knock the ball loose, with defensive end Hall Davis there to recover the ball and return it for a touchdown.
Those are the kinds of instincts, technique and playmaking that coaches are looking for in these games.

to be honest, his mistakes are fixable , it’s not like he’s having hard time reading Ds or stuff, he’s just forcing some plays deep , he want’s to connect deep really bad, but he will be fine , he won’t be making those stupid throws into DP when real games start
    =======================

he wont? Why wont he, he made the same mistakes last year to the tune of 16 picks. he is now 18 picks in 10 starts.

Its the 3rd preseason game, Palmer will play 3 quarters, and if Lienart is healthy he will probably play the last one. This is how teams have done it for years man, jeeesh

Goodson had 244 touches….he also returned kicks for Carolina….

That being said….he really fumbled 3 times tonight…one play was whistled dead…

I know how it is usually done, I am suggesting doing something else. I believe our qb position is in a very poor state at the moment and doing something a bit out of the box maybe be better for the team in the long run.

Lienart looks the best and that is very bad news. pryor looked better but we didnt get to see much of him. Palmer was atrocious and needs all of the work he can get.

Lienart is ready to go, dont risk an injury or waste valuable game reps for palmer and pryor

O-line needs help. The back-ups are below par. Carlisle & Parsons were really weak tonight. Even Brisel was getting whipped on occasion. I still am against the ZBS. We’ve already been there & done that and it wasn’t good for us. Knapp on his last visit wasn’t good for us either. We’ve got problems on offense. Any injuries & we are screwed.

In closing, TP is a joke at QB. Retrain him for something else or get rid of his a$$. He will NEVER be an NFL starting QB. This project is a waste of time & energy. Just my opinion but I’m sure it’s shared by many others on here. He simply doesn’t have the basic passing skills necessary for developmental success.

Oh yeah maybe they will listen to u better, you make so much sense adding up those 17 int and calling bad with out considering maybe it had to do with him coming in half way and learning everything on the fly , and without the benefit of having the best running back on his side, with young WR who were getting injured every other week, which he had to adjust to a new receiver every other week and also the O line was only getting worse as the season went along.. Yes, you should work for some team

Ford’s durability is NOW really in question. He’s of no value if he can’t play without injury. we’ve had our “glass” Schillins & now we seem to have “Faulty” Ford. He acting like his namesake Ford – Fix Or Repair Daily. He’s going to be relegated to ST, KOR & #5 or #6 WR. I see our starting WR as DHB, D-Wow & Streater. #4 will be Criner, #5 may be Ford or one of our other newbie WR’s. We also need someone to step up significantly at TE.

  • mcfadden20.

Obviously he’s learning a new scheme and new playbook again , if they want to play safe , they could just keep on running with mcfadden n keep dumping off like Campbell n score every time , but he needs to get in synch with new receivers going deep, and feel his arm n stuff , what’s the point of just playing safe in pre-season just to appease over-reacting fans like u?

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

The problem isnt that he just throws picks in pre season, he does it during the regualr season and a break neck clip. He was nearly picked on his first pass, and was lucky that the ball he threw up for grabs to streeter wasnt also picked.

I swear, the partners in the entity that comprise the “Oakland Raiders” should file a derivative action, and turn Mark Davis out for negligence, oppression various breaches of various duties, such as having the unmitigated gall of assuming that someone or something will invest $1.5B building the clown show called the Raiders a new stadium.

The Davis’ other partners should force the Davis’ out of the partnership, or at least assert ultimate control which discounts Mark Davis from making any decisions.

The “new” Raiders should then forfeit the season and put together a real organization with real talent in the staff and roster.

Twenty-eight yrs of this is enough. Enough is enough. I have really had it with our current backslide. I am wondering why would Mark Davis, DA and Reggie bring in a re-hashed OC like Greg Knapp. Dude is out of it.

When I first heard Reggie speak after he was hired I was alarmed as to his intelligence and aptitude for strategic planning. He can’t even speak English properly, using double negatives, run on sentences etc.

On the other hand DA speaks fairly fluently but ALWAYS uses “that” instead of “who” or “whom”: “He’s a guy that brings a lot to the game”: should be “He’s a guy WHO brings a lot to the game.”

What can expect when top managers can’t even speak properly using incorrect syntax and grammar while inserting “ya know” and “like” 4 or 5 times per minute?

When I heard Reggie and DA speak I had great doubts.

What we can expect is what is happening now: lack of intelligence and common sense.

We really need to ditch the Davis’ and fire all the incompetents including Reggie and DA, and start entirely from scratch.

My BS meter says you’re at it again. There wasnt a soul near Streater to intercept when that pass was made. I have it on tape and watched it a few times. The pass to Streater in the endzone while falling on his back side also on target, as was the pass that clanked off DHB’s hands. Now you want to talk about Palmer missing wide open guys on other plays, that’s fair game.

MY TAKES ON THE GAME & PRESEASON DEVELOPMENT SO FAR…

Our depth sucks. We are in trouble if we lose anyone to injury. We knew this going in though. It’s going to take some time before the Gut can stockpile talent on this team. And then again, their are quite a few teams that dont go for any depth (Eagles, Jets) and just roll the dice. We are in that group by default this year.

I think a lot of “Reggies guys” have a chance at making this team. Then again, they are playing against the 2nd and 3rd units of two otherwise un-impressive teams.

Maybe I was wrong about Lonyae “1st Gear” Miller? I know one thing, I was certainly wrong about handing Goodson the #2 spot. It’s time to bring in some new blood. Ive seen about all I need to see from Goodson. And quite frankly, Ive seen all I need to see from Lonyae. And I havent seen anything from Taiwan. We need RB help in a big way. Goodson is a fumble machine like Ive never seen in a Raider uniform.

Streater will be a starting WR this season. Most of us thought that he’d be their at some point. Now Im starting to think he needs to be their week 1. You would not see me complain if D17 and Streater were our starting WR’s come monday nite against San diego. Im normally a huge Ford guy and I have stuck by DHB thru thick and (mostly) thin. But that dropped touchdown by DHB and the sh1tload of catches by Streater has reminded me what a WR looks like. No matter what, Streater is either going to be our #2 or #3 before its all said and done. Palmer’s comfortability with he and D17 is evident.

By the time the year is up, Criner might push DHB and Ford into the #4 & #5 roles. Just sayin’, dont be surprised. New era.

Defense… Im still on a wait and see approach. Scheme looks good. But lets not forget, it was AZ. A-freaking-Z. And before that, Dallas. A Dallas team that was missing 7 starters and 7 other backups that should make the team. 14 guys out (including your starting and backup center) is going to make our D look a lot better than it is. And Kevin Kolb has a way of doing that also.

Sloppiness… A lot of it is fixable.

Playcalling… Im happy with it. The players got to execute. Most of you wont notice it, but Knapp is making the proper adjustments. This game was less of a “practice/evaluation scrimmage” and more of a game where he wanted to try and put up some points and he called the plays that way. Again, the players did not deliver.

TK… Love the guy. A real footballer that loves the game. Truly loves football. I have to root for a guy like that.

Death Ro… Got picked on that TD. Heck, we never should have even been in that position in the first place. But you take that play out of consideration and otherwise, he looks like a whole ‘nother player to me.

Leinart… It goes to show, no matter how great your college career was, no matter how polished you look coming into the NFL, you need time to develop into an adult and a pro. Leinart is finally there. We’ve never been in such good shape with our backup QB situation. Who would have thought that with the way the semi’s bickered all off-season.

Palmer… Im not concerned yet. Im not un-concerned. Like most of you, I am frustrated. Im not getting that “elite” vibe yet when he walks out on the field or drops back in the pocket. I just dont have that Gannon-like confidence in knowing that CP wont make a critical mistake. Im not dreading when he drops back either. Its just kinda one of those feelings of indifference right now. Hopefully its just preseason over reacting on my part. We havent exactly had these sort of expectations for a QB in a long time. We might have forgotten how to react.

The Boz… first play in there and he blows his lane. Later dude.

MM34…. continues to impress. I love how they are using him. Much in the way we’ve always wanted too, as a hybrid safety/OLB. Missed a stupid tackle but that was just indicative of the teams overall sloppy & inconsistent play.

Shonasty/Bryant…. Big things are coming for these two. Our D-line looks real good. Im really hopeful that our D is as good as it looks but until I see it against a real team for 4 quarters, I just wont feel 100% sure yet.

Palmer continues to suck and it is painful to watch. Still think he is elite AIG?

    comically sad

    —-

to be honest, his mistakes are fixable , it’s not like he’s having hard time reading Ds or stuff, he’s just forcing some plays deep , he want’s to connect deep really bad, but he will be fine , he won’t be making those stupid throws into DP when real games start
    =======================

he wont? Why wont he, he made the same mistakes last year to the tune of 16 picks. he is now 18 picks in 10 starts.

Lest stop making excuses for palmer.

    ——————————

Ok, who’s going to play at QB, then? Pryor? No. Leinart? No.

No one is making excuses, thats who we ride with, until we take Barkley in the draft next year, or look in free agency in 2015.

It is what it is. Hopefully, he’ll improve.

This is what happens when you bring back one of the worse o.c. we ever had in Knapp.there was nothing wrong with the offense should have let Saunders run it I do love what we are doing with the defense though.

    Mcfadden20,ENGLANDRAIDER,

Troll my azz you little punks…..I was a Raider fan before you were even born.

    Get to stepping Johnny-Come-Lately.

This is what we are ladies and gents, a B&B Knapp/Cable offense

They are trying to sell this rethread crap offense to the raider nation & Im not buying.

Hue was 10 times better as a o coordinator back in 2010, we had a top 10 offense

CP looks the worst hes been, regresing under GK ofense

Don’t like the Knapp offense or the Knapp play-calling. Often criticized for predictability, it was evident today and last week.

Draw plays on 3rd and long, and short crossing routes on 3rd and short that end up 1-2 shy of a first down.

Don’t like the excess of rollouts either. The backside LBs or blitzing Nickelbacks are aware of it, and more often result in the QB being a sitting duck, scrambling madly and trying to get off a pass that in regular season games will end up as picks, or 10 yard sacks.

DVD, Goodson, Ford…should be cuts or trade them for what you can get. DVD might get another season to develop as we’re thin at CB.

Palmer is definitely in decline. Too inconsistent like a rookie — that’s when a vet starts to decline. Passes sailing, forced into double-coverage, interspersed with nice passes. Leinart throws a better ball in their current ages. But unsure if Leinart can be a franchise QB still.

Pryor I’m still ok with. This is essentially a rookie season, first action in 20 months, first QB coach, and learning pocket-passing techniques as well as the playbook and getting thru the recent deaths of his father and mentor. Another year learning and acquiring experience on the field. I don’t think Reggie/Dennis are frustrated with him or anything.

    The defense looks very good.

Streater-DHB will end up the starting WRs on opening night. Streater’s better hands and nous might even propel him ahead of DHB if DHB doesn’t continue to improve, he’s not as reliable as Streater (evident by the amount of times Palmer went his way instead).

Streater-Criner and Moore in the slot, could be a starting three some time this year.

Hue Jackson’s Offense is twice as better then what Greg Krapp is running, zone blocking. Doesn’t work why the F was it installed, didn’t work the first time won’t work the second time around.

  • JohnnyRaider

If Mcfadden gets injured we are major screwed. Lonyae Miller showed no punch or running speed and he missed a block he should have easily had to avoid the block punt. Need to watch cuts by other teams and see if we can pick up a running back. T Jones is always fragile and hurt, either he starts showing something quick or trade him. DVD should already be cut, never did like him when I first saw him. I thought he had int last night only to see he allowed the receiver to rip the ball away from him. Just my opinion, I think Knapps play calling has way to many run plays especially when our backs where lucky to get a few yards. On 4th and 1 against the goal line we should have gone for it. In our first game against the bolts, I would not start DHB, he still drops way too many balls. Read practice notes where DHB was dropping balls in the Red Zone, do not understand why they had him there to begin with, should have had one of the other receivers who can hang onto the ball. o-line needs some work.
