Raiders look at Andre Carter

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, August 21st, 2012 at 3:14 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders had defensive end Andre Carter, who played for both Cal and the 49ers, in for a workout Tuesday.

After being evaluated by Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie and members of the personnel department, Carter good-naturedly waved off reporters who had questions.

“I’ve got to stay low key,’’ Carter said. “If it works out, God willing . . .’’

Carter, 33, is coming off a season with the New England Patriots in which he had 10 sacks and tied the club’s single-game sack record with four against the New York Jets.

However, Carter tore his left quadriceps tendon on Dec. 18 and missed the remainder of the season.

Coach Dennis Allen confirmed Carter’s presence and said, “We’re shaking all the bushes and seeing what falls out, and if we feel like we’ve got something that can help us, we’re going to do it.’’

Carter played as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense with both the 49ers under Mike Nolan, but has flourished as an end, with 10 or more sacks in three of his last five seasons and 76 for his career.

The Raiders are primarily a 4-3 team but have shown some 3-4 and plan have multiple schemes.

The Raiders currently have Matt Shaughnessy and Lamar Houston as the starting defensive ends, with Dave Tollefson in reserve and a rookie fifth-round draft pick in Jack Crawford.

Houston, however, can also play inside, and the Raiders plan to use a lot of different combinations along their defensive front.

Raiders go to regular season mode

In a departure from previous years, coach Dennis Allen took the extra step of instituting in-season media access, meaning reporters were restricted to the first half-hour of practice. During that time, the club goes through warm-ups and some drills, with the media being excused once they go to team sessions.

Every other season since 1996, practices were open all the way through training camp and practices closed once the team returned to its home facility in Alameda.

Players who were not present or did not appear to be practicing as the team sessions began included wide receivers Jacoby Ford (foot) and Denarius Moore (hamstring), running back Rashawn Jackson (hip), linebacker Aaron Curry (knees), center Stefen Wisniewski (calf), tackle Ed Wang (shoulder), tackle Zach Hurd (head), defensive tackle Richard Seymour (veteran’s day off) and defensive tackle Jamie Cumbie (foot).

Players who were back at practice included safety Michael Huff (paternity leave), quarterback Matt Leinart (lacerated right index finger) and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey (shoulder).

The Raiders must cut the roster to 75 players by 1 p.m. on Aug. 7 (Pacific Time), with the 53-man roster finalized on Aug. 31 by 6 p.m.

But that might be the only reason he makes the team.

Ford’s injury forces our hand there.

Unless we go Goodson on KR & Moore on PR.

But again, injury [Moore] forcing our hand.

Im thinking we go 8 OL.

Bergstrom will backup Guard & Tackle.
Parsons will backup Center & Guard.
Barksdale will backup Tackle.. Thats where we need the upgrade.

We went with 8 OL last year too.

I agree, I’ll give him the benefit of first game back jitters, after a hard hit. Stink it up again though, adios my friend.

And the other thing is, we haven’t seen squat from Jones. 1 preseason game where he looked full of promise. Then hurt….Comes into a game for 1 play…back to the sideline…Hurt again.

RB’s especially can’t be expected to come off the bench and take one to the house. They need to get in a rythm. We don’t even know what he can do yet. He could be fantastic, but…..I’m worried.

Is this new news? I figured he has ben open to that since he started his holdout. He wants to get paid, I don’t see us payin him, but he is a well known Raider fan. I could see the Broncos or Chargers having some interest in him, that would suck.

  24. raidertbone Says:

After losing so many picks in his first draft, I don’t see Reggie doling out picks for next year — if anything, I see him looking to acquire more; wouldn’t be surprised to see him trade down once or twice to garner additional picks .. but that’s NEXT year!

Bro, im not talking about roster spots in terms of them making the team.

Meaning we need to sign someone better than them for those positions during cutdowns.

Yes, it is usually news when the NFL leader in rushing yards wants to be traded because of the owners comments. :)

  27. blackandsilverside Says:

Reggie needs to package the serially injured Moore, Jones, and Ford and trade them for either an excellent CB or RB.

Time has run out for these 3 players. We retained Schliens way too long and hung on to Murphy who took one substantial lick and was never the same.

Some guys make a career out of riding the pine. It’s a steady paycheck with no chance of concussion and they can make a $1M/yr or more for doing nothing.

Btw, Chaz and Murphy have both been injured in the preseason, and are again, riding the pine.

This is where the GM really earns his money — once cuts are made, who knows what diamonds in the rough are going to be out there? You have to look at depth charts, whose ahead of those who’ve been cut, how they did in camp, how they performed in college, overall attitude, etc. There may still even be some unsigned free agents that could actually help out at a position or two.

True, He didn’t look great and he was going against backups, but I was just surprised he looked alright in there. Maybe our coaching staff should of tried him at LT/RT instead of the Guard experiment, but like I said he didn’t look great out there, it looked like he even gave up a sack later in the game, probably to some 3rd string guy or something

82.. no.. the trades were bad because the players we traded are worth more now than when we traded them.. now there are injuries & desperate teams.. like …hmm us..

    ===========================================

I wouldn’t call us desperate. Even with Ford out, our WR position is fine, and DMAC’s not going anywhere. Relax.

The Jets wouldn’t give us a warm can of SPAM for Campbell and you know it. Murphy wouldn’t get much more, as he hasn’t placed decently since 2009. And they were both 4th-rounders, not 3rd.

“Nonetheless, he is virtually certain to be an extremely high pick — and the Raiders are among the potential suitors. Coach Jon Gruden last week identified placekicking as the Raiders’ No. 1 priority because the team finished 28th among the 31 NFL teams last year in field-goal percentage. It also has been speculated that other decent teams with kicking needs — the Rams, Chiefs and Vikings come to mind — might take a shot at Janikowski, too.”

I’m not for all this gloom and doom cry baby crap some fans are expressing on this blog but the people complaining about the value we got for Murphy and big Bruce are on to something. If we would have kept both player untill at least the third preseason game we probably would get more in return especially for Murphy, considering all the other teams in the league hurting for Wr. Were not even at the max 90 player limit. Murphy could have been shinnig for us especially with the injuries we have to our Wr corps. Big Mac might have pulled the trigger a little to fast. But in the end does it really matter, its not like those two players were all pro, at best they were stop gaps. again we could have gotten better value had we waited, but does it really matter.
