    Wouldn’t it be nice if:
    Marcell could catch 2 screen passes out of the backfield and rack up about 30-40 yards;
    then, they put him in on their goal line package 5 times and he comes away with 5 short TD runs;
He would blow away all the fantasy numbers and yet not a single person would have him on their Fantasy team

Cork will answer the same recycled questions over and over again. He gets a lot of dumb questions, Im not sure why he answers them, but he does, repeatedly.

If you try calling him on anything, he will ignore you. He may respond, but he will dodge the actual question like his life depends on it. He will never admit he was wrong (ie DHB)

He will tell us how badly we need CBs and WRs. Despite the fact that they are the least important positions on offense and defense.

He will still be pounding that “build a bully” drum. He doesnt realize how tired it is.

He rarely takes a stance on anything he will later be held accountable for. He knows we semi’s dont forget a thing and love to call him on it.

Does he have some insight from time to time? Yes he does. Like when he posted some rumors/details regarding how Hue got himself canned and the terms of Reggie hire by Mark Davis. I wish he stuck to stuff like this. Cork is a member of the media. He hears a lot of stuff that would NEVER make the mainstream news. I wish he gave us more scoops and stories from stuff he’s seen and heard but oh well.

I would argue, well the scheme does depend a little I guess, that CB’s are more important than LB’s.

I think D-line is the 2nd most important position behind QB, but OUR COACH said the nickle corner is a starter in today’s NFL, and ends up seeing the field more than an OLB.

I would be willing to bet if Burris is our starting OLB, our nickle corner will see the field more.

Never have liked risk/reward of firsts, even before you know who. Might be better now with CBA rookie contract set-up. Forgot the details of that.

Mediocre QBs can look very good with a good O-Line. A poor O-Line will make a great QB look bad.

Same with the running back position. Those guys usually nothing without good line play.

So to me, nothing is more important than your O-Line.

Offense wins games. Defense wins championships. To build a team I think you start off just trying to win games, so that is why I put the O-Line slightly ahead of the D-Line. Either way, teams are built from the inside out.

If I put O-Line the most important, I put the D-Line second. The DE position these days is the only position in the sport that can single handedly take over a game. Every other position is heavily dependent on the rest of the team but the DE can change everything. For example, look at the way the DE’s for the Giants have won them their last two SuperBowls.

Great D-Line play makes everyone elses jobs easier.

After the D line, then I put the QB position. Plenty of SuperBowls have been won with slightly above average QBs. And plenty of great QB’s have never won a SuperBowl. If your O-Line and D-Line are top notch, you got a real chance.

The Ravens and Ed Reed are a prime example that the Safeties are more important than the CBs. The CBs on that team have been a revolving door yet that D has been excellent the last decade.

I’ll take a great LB core ahead of great DB’s any day. Our team is a prime example of being the opposite of the Ravens. Our DB lineup has been very good the last decade. Our LB core has been horrible. And as a result, our D has sucked.

Do your own research troll. You have less intelligence than a garden hose, and “its not even close.”

Show me one SuperBowl team that didnt have a very good offensive line?

Great QB’s who didnt win SuperBowls:

    - Fran Tarkenton
    - Archie Manning
    - Dan Fouts
    - Boomer Esiason
    - Jim Kelly
    - Warren Moon
    - Marino
    - Steve McNair

Great QB’s who couldnt win a SuperBowl until they had a really good run game (ie O-Line) and/or Defense

    - Elway
    - Peyton Manning
    - Drew Brees

Average QB’s who won SuperBowls (great leaders tho):

    - Joe Namath
    - Terry Bradshaw
    - Bob Griese
    - Jim Plunkett
    - Jim McMahon
    - Ken Anderson
    - Doug Williams
    - Jeff Hostetler
    - Mark Rypien
    - Brad Johnson
    - Trent Dilfer

There are very few Jim Kellys of the world that had the QB talent, the O-Lines and defense talent and still couldnt get it done as a team.

Gannon had a very good offensive line. He didnt lose his SuperBowl for lack of O-Line. He lost his chances due to Siragusa’s hit, the Tuck Rule, and missing Barret Robbins/treason by Callahan.

I dont know why you argue with me 99. You get killed every time.

Next time they replay that game on NFL network watch it and tell me the Colts didnt get lucky as all heck.

Without the rain/Rex’s small hands, the Bears easily win that game.

  41. Just Fire Baby Says:

I guess that’s what happens when you judge a QB by STATS only.

If as you say, Rich Gannon was so great and he had a great OL, then why didn’t he win a SB ?

You’re going to have to come up with something better than the absurd ‘treason’ story you keep referring to.

Are you seriously going to tell this blog that Callahan dumped the SB intentionally in some sort of act of treason ?

How’d the great Rich Gannon allow this treasonous act to occur ?

  44. Just Fire Baby Says:

I’m not saying O-line isn’t important, every position is important.

I would say O-line is more important than RB, and D-line is the 2nd most important position in the NFL.

The NFL is a changed league now. Teams are going to the Super Bowl with either an average to below average defense, or average to below average O-line.

They don’t get their with average to below-average QB’s.

  45. DutchRaider77 Says:

    @Just Fire Baby

Kevin Kolb? Looked pretty good in Philly, not so much now? You don’t think a team can be loaded with talent can make a below average QB look really good? Seemed like Tommy Maddox was pretty good for a couple years?

Just look at the drafts these days.

Teams are spending top picks on edge rushers, QB, WR’s and DB’s.

The 3rd best Center prospect might last until the 4th round, same with OG’s. Meanwhile 15 corners will be taken before them.

  48. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

    LOL….Come one man!!!!!

    ———————————-

No, just in those select cases where the exception to the rule applies.

Bottom line is that a great QB isnt as important as a great O-Line or Defense. In all but 3-4 cases (that have obvious question marks), my stance holds true.

1/3 of all the SuperBowls won were done by average QBs.

But if you look at dang near every SuperBowl won, the Defense is very good if not the strength of the teams (ie the Steelers of the 70s, the Cowboys dynasties, the Dolpins of the 70s).

The best example is the Griese Dolphins vs the Marino Dolphins. Another great example is Elway. He was always great. But could never get it done until he had a O-Line and a D behind him. And to boot, they played in a WCO that made his rocket arm not needed.

No QB has done it on his own. Thiesman had the Hogs, Stabler had the greatest Oline in history, Staubach had a GREAT D, Bradshaw had the Steel Curtain, Aikman had a GREAT D.

You can find exceptions to every rule if you search hard enough. Im not showing you the exceptions to the rules to prove my point, Im showing you obvious trends.

  51. raidertbone Says:

Add Jim Hart, Ron Jaworski, and John Brodie to the list of great QBs to never win a Super Bowl.

  52. Just Fire Baby Says:

    ——————————

I dont believe that any SINGLE lineman is more important than a QB. As a whole, the line is more important. But not one player.

I might, and I strongly stress MIGHT, take a DE over a QB. Charlie Casserly did it with Mario Williams and that proved to be the right move to start a franchise on the right path.

QB’s take so long to develop. DE’s are less risky.

    It’s a tough choice.

Seriously, I would probably take a young dominant DE over a top flight QB if you twisted my arm for an answer. I love Aaron Rogers and Eli but I also know they have some very good help. Jay Cutler is very good and we see what a poor OLine can make him look like.

Which DE would I take? Let me think about that for a minute.

Kolb getting injured that day against GB cost me money.

Bet that game UNDER at the half. GB was up by a TD and content to just run, run, run, since the Eagles couldn’t move the ball at all with Kevin Knob at the helm.

Knob gets injured, Vick comes in, Beagles score and now Rodgers starts showing why he’s the best in the game.

    Game flew over.

It was so obvious that Kevin Knob sucked. Can’t believe Az traded for that scrub.

I don’t think Callahan is calculating enough to plan something like that. He simply got smoked by a better coach and a better game plan.

    ——————

The players have said that the game plan mysteriously changed just a few days before the game.

They prepped for nearly 2 weeks and then things changed all of a sudden.

In the 2nd half, when we started to come back, the players had revolted and went back to the old gameplan.

I do agree with your D-line stance. If you can make the opposing team have to move their feet in the backfield (RB on a run, QB in the pocket) that is gold.

When you have a crappy D-line, the RB is in 3rd gear as he passes the LOS, and the LB’s and DB’s have little chance.

And I always feel a great D-line beats a great DOline, 8 out of 10 times. Not everytime, but most of the time.

Just like good pitching almost always beat good hitting in the baseball postseason. Not every year, but most years.

Definitely! A great D should always beat a great O the majority of the time. One requires execution (low probability) and one just requires sound scheme and hustle (very consistent).

That is why if you want to tell me that a D-Line is more important than a O-Line, you wont see me put up much of a argument against you. Its nearly a wash.

    Yep, I’d agree it’s a close call.

I’d hazard to say a that a really excellent QB can make an offense hum without a great OLine easier than a defense can be dominating without a superb DLine.

In all the years I’ve been rooting for the Raids, I can truthfully say we’ve never had a truly dominating defense.

We’ve run into some dominating defenses, most notably the Steelers, and that cost us several championships.

Trade out of 1st and 2nd rounds and LOAD UP on 3rd rounders. Build a solid D and O line in one swift sweep.

Most GMs would waste their 1st and 2nds on the top QB’s, WR’s and CB’s. By the time the 3rd round comes, a team that trades away its 1st and 2nd round picks could have 5 or more picks in the 3rd round. And their would be PLENTY of talented O and D line players left to pick up.

Some may argue what Callahan’s true intentions were, but nobody can argue the fact that we changed our game plan and the details surrounding it.

Furthermore, we were loaded to try and get back to the SuperBowl the next season when Callahan did even worse 2 weeks prior to the season starting. He completely scrapped the entire playbook and cadence/language system and installed an entirely new system that the players had very little time to learn.

Its an ugly turn of events that nobody here wants to believe happened. You can draw whatever conclusions your heart desires, but you cannot ignore the factual accounts of what went down.

I hate Callahan about as much as I hate Shanahan and Shottenheimer. Maybe more.

    —————-

Sully and KK are about as dumb as it gets. But can you blame them for being mad at Al?

The fact of the matter is, if we keep Bruce Allen and Gruden with the org, we probably win 2 SuperBowls last decade. Al should have paid them whatever was needed.

Al’s eye for talent and Gruden’s leadership within a dysfunctional franchise were a perfect match for each other. Those two may have fought like he11 but they were made for each other. Ive read articles where former Gruden players said that Gruden always wanted to come back and coach for us fans and even for Al again. Chucky was made for us. It was really fun with him on the sideline.

There were mistakes made, all the way around by all parties. And if they could all do it differently, I think they would.

It makes me so sad to think about. We Raider Nation got so robbed in so many ways. Bo Jackson, Marinovich, the Tuck Game, trading Gruden, the Callahan incident…. it literally hurts to think about. The last 20 years have been rough.

Al should have died the winningest owner of all time. We left about 4 SuperBowls on the table.

  86. Raider Riff Says:

Those days when all the Chucky dolls were being waived…

And Gannon imposed so much fear into the opposing teams….

With Gruden yelling at the refs like they stole his kids lunch money…..

And Al up in the box still coherent enough to follow the game……

I had my season tix in the Black Hole back then. Section 105 row 11.

The Coliseum would really rock back then. Nobody wanted to play against us there. NOBODY.

Go back and look at the outrage at Jacoby Ford’s first game and then Cork trying to reassure the fans that the Ford/Palmer connection is fine and nothing to worry about. I don’t think the rebuttal to the blog is mere coincidence.

Honestly, we shoulda been #1 when it comes to the uni’s.

We’re the only team where our uni is probably responsible for over half of our fan base.

Our uniforms will NEVER change (same goes for the Celtics and Yankees, I dunno about anyone else)

Our uniforms actually represent what we are about better than any other uniform/team relationship. Being a Raider fan says something about who you are. It’s an attitude. A mantra. A philosophy.

There’s nothing cool about the Celtics uni’s but the tradition. Same for the Yanks. Our uni’s are way more than tradition.

We need to tax businesses more and people less.
    I hate Taxes.

    ————–

What is taxing businesses more going to really accomplish?

If you raise their cost of doing business, they simply cut their expenses (lay people off) or raise the cost of goods, thus raising the cost of living in this country.

The problem isnt the amount of tax revenue. Its the amount of spending. You could wipe away the deficit and give the government a 100 trillion head start and they’d find a way to mismanage it all in a heartbeat.

They got all the revenue they need. Think about it. In just sales tax alone they get nearly 9% of everything sold! That is a incredible amount.

The fact that they spend in on the military is their fault. Not the tax payers.

One thing you need to realize when talking tax revenue (and I think its relevant here) is that roughly 85% of all the revenue generated is from the top 5% of the income brackets (businesses and individuals). The money you or I pay into the tax pool is so insignificant we really shouldnt even consider ouselves “tax payers”. So any time you advocate raising taxes, you got to consider where than revenue will come from. It comes from the medium size and large businesses. And like I said earlier, they dont eat those costs, they just pass them back to us, thus raising the cost of living. Its a viscious cycle.

The answer is to get rid of all the ridiculous spending in Washington.

I have to agree with you here the biggest waste of money is by government. First they are over resourced to the gills and they pay themselves way too much.

The average corporate employee in America makes 60K a year while the average government employee makes 80K a year. This is not logical because corporate is who supports government so that is ass backwards.

A congressman makes 174K a year and they have secretaries that make 120K and the secretaries have assistants that make 60K a year and that’s not counting the befits.

Departments are over resourced (75% of Oakland city budget goes to police and fire) So they keep telling the city counsel you need better trained officers ones that cost 180K per year that’s how you will cut down on all these murders…WRONG it hasn’t helped all it has done is waste Oakland’s money.

Then everyday you can read an article in some newspaper or web site about a guard at a local prison that made 200K last year because he worked so much overtime. WASTE!!

Then 1/2 of the people locked up in jails are drug addicts or alcoholic or guys that cant pay child support. WHAT A WASTE!

In every department of any government function there is waste.

Cut government in 1/2 it would still be enough and then cut their salaries in half that is how you start saving money treat them like a corporation make them accountable and profitable.

The point here is that there is enough money being collected by the IRS every year to support our social programs and military but its wasted!

    ———————

As long as they incorporate overseas, they arent breaking any laws. Corps are so international these days, its just a matter of one loophole or another for them to dodge paying their share.

All this is moot anyways. Our corps need to get the F out of other countries and stop meddling in their affairs. We discussed this last nite and I think we all agree, colonialism sucks.

As for the money the gov does collect in tax revenue, they get plenty. And they waste 95% of it. That is on them.

If we tax those bastards and eliminate those loopholes, and tax them extra for operating abroad in counties with lower tax rates, then we can afford to tax people less, which will give them more income to spend on goods and services, which means they can afford the increase in prices.

It could be easily fixed but the problem we have is that government will allow itself to grow in every way possible because they are out for themselves.

    A perfect example of this:

Our president is a Democrat and should not allow the FEDS to bust up our medicinal marijuana dispensaries. But yet they are doing it all over the country and in every states where its legal.

    WHY?

Because he knows they need the stats and the numbers to justify their budget next year!

The FEDS cant do their real job which is to keep cocaine and heroin from coming across the border so they justify their existence and pad their stats by busting up a bunch of legal businesses.

Of course the budget can be balanced. All we do is balance our trade deficit with China and the $16T deficit could be wiped out in two years.

Currently, and for the past 10 yrs we’ve run a $300B/month deficit with China. That translates to $3.6T/year and $36T/decade. When the currency equivalent between China and the U.S. is factored in, plus multipliers under the ripple effect, that translates to at least $300T we have put into the Chinese economy in the last 10 yrs.

If that deficit was balanced the U.S. would have been the recipient of nearly $150T, with taxation on those revenues being at least $15T.

    There goes our budget deficit.

Here’s a scoop for you guys, unless you have a dominating defense (eg. 85 Bears, Dilfer’s Ravens, Johnson’s Bucs) you’re going to be extremely hard pressed to win a SB without a premium QB.

When did I say the 76 Raids had a dominating defense ?

In fact, I’ve said the Raids have NEVER had a truly dominating defense. Plenty of really good defenses, but nothing ever dominating like the Steel Curtain, 85 Bears, or 2000 Ravens. That’s really not a huge critique, as defenses like that are extremely rare.

The point was, a QB like Dilfer or McMahon would be exteremely hard pressed to win a SB without an outstanding defense. Mediocre QB’s, as a rule, aren’t getting you a ring without the benefit of a dominant D.

Since we agree Stabler was a great QB, I don’t see the point you’re trying to make.

Of course I was beinging facetious about Russell, 99.
You and I shared the same opinion of him from the git go.

What I was questioned was your apparent insistence that a strong defense is more essential to a winning football team than a strong offensive line.

    I don’t agree with that.
You start with a strong offensive line and doing that is more important than having a great defense and the 76 Raiders and pretty much every really great Raider team proved that.

    ================================================
Never insisted that at all or even inferred it.

However, I do believe a great QB can make an offensive line look a lot better than it actually is.

That wasn’t the case with the 76 Raids at all. They had a great line, perhaps the best of all time. Stabler benefitted immensely from that. And I agree 100% that although the defense was good, it was hardly dominating.

    ================================================
There was never a country or nation/state of Palestine.

    That’s ridiculous Arab revisionist history.

Palestine was a geographic region. Not a nation.

If it was a nation, you should be able to cite when it came into existence, name a few presidents, kings or prime ministers, state it’s exact borders, state what currency it created, etc.

And who did the Brits gift Palestine to ?

Since the dissolution of the Turkish Empire there’s been a myriad of Arab nations created.

The REGION of Palestine was partitioned by the World League/UN, divided into several nations.

Only one of which seems to bother the Arabs.

Bothers them enough that they’ve launched several wars in an attempt to destroy that nation, only to get the camel urine slapped out of them and then they whine about an ‘occupation’.

You want a ‘Palestinian’ nation ? Build one in the Hashemite Kingdom. After all, the vast majority of the REGION of Palestine was used to create that entity. That way you won’t have to be confused whether you’re a Jordanian or a Palestinian.

High time that the Islamo-fascists stop obsessing over destroying Israel, quit promising to finish Hitler’s work, and get on with improving their own lot.

Leave the portion of Palestine that became Israel alone.

    It’s better for everyone concerned.

musta been the 4th qtr scrubs that inflated kc’s poor first team stats. I quit watching at the end of the 3rd qtr. As much as I cant stand KC, I equally dislike the hacks. I just wanted to see two teams beat each other to a pulp, but the hacks made KC look very bad. Cassell forced a lot of throws and the recievers couldn’t hang on. Wilson could be the hacks starter over flynn. The guy is a 5′9″ dynamo. I really want to see the niners lose to them twice this year because they are way down there with SD, Denver and the hacks. I’ve always liked HP; probably because I’m still using a 2003 HP Compaq presario with no issues. With the emphasis on tablets, netbooks, ultras etc. the best buys seem to be the bigger 15.4″ or 17.1″ laptops. See those from acer, toshiba, HP, etc. at the big box stores(best buy, etc) for $300 with acceptable specs to less than $500 with more than acceptable specs all the time, usually with windows 7 home premium installed. That’s the direction I,m leaning. I don’t mind a big laptop, prefer it actually but I don’t lug it around all that much. You gotta know what’s important to you and obviously the more you spend…

  385. Plunketthead Says:

As the Oakland Raiders’ defense prepare for their toughest test of the preseason against the Detroit Lions, defensive coordinator Jason Tarver wants to see the defense continue to show progression. As a first year defense coordinator in the NFL, Tarver is teaching his defense to a new team, but likes what he has seen with team work and process.

“It’s all about process, it really is,” Tarver said. “It’s about teaching progression and processing. Putting everything together in categories so we can progress where we want to go. It’s great that they can see that because now they are putting those things together, going, ‘oh this looks like this. I see myself in this making plays.’ But now we’ve got to do it and we have to do it with 11 guys together.”

Tarver broke into the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers and spent 10 years with the team, most coming as a linebackers coach. Last season he jumped to Stanford to be the co-defensive coordinator and the Cardinal led the Pac 12 in six defense categories. After all he has a master’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology helping him match wits against the offense.

The first year Raiders’ defensive coordinator wants to utilize multiple defensive looks and schemes. He will be tasked with improving a defense that last season ranked 27th against both the run and the pass. He will use both man and zone coverages. One of the most important aspects Tarver wants to bring to the Raiders is pressure by dialing up blitzes.

“There’s good pressure at times,” Tarver said. “More encouraged is the guys working together and the mindset. It’s about mindset, it’s about I know where I’m going and you’ve got to deal with me.”

There has been much chatter from players like Michael Huff and Richard Seymour that this Raiders defense under Tarver has a chance to be top five. The players love the system because it allows them to be aggressive and make plays. As far as being a top five defense when 2012 is done, Tarver defines good defense in his terms.

“How do you rank a top-five defense” Tarver said. “There’s a lot of ways, but the biggest one is getting the heck off the field and getting the ball to Carson and the guys. That’s the biggest one, that’s what we want to do. The other stats with that, that’s a result of controlling how we get off the field. Third down percentage, red zone touchdown percentage, those are a couple that are good markers.

With the third NFL preseason game widely regarded as the closest to a regular season game as far as starters playing more time and game planning for a specific opponent, Tarver sees the Detroit Lions as a significant challenge. Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson and company will give the Raiders defense their best test of the offseason.

“It’s a good order for us,” Tarver said. “You got Dallas that can throw it, and wants to run [the ball] downhill at you. You have Arizona who shifts a little bit and still runs downhill at you, and of course as a good wide receiver. And then you have Detroit that runs it more than most people think they do, but it is a little bit more spread out and they try to get match-ups for their good players. Of course we know the guy with the nickname who is on the cover of ESPN The Magazine this week. But they have other players, and that quarterback he gets it out. It’s kind of a nice progression for us. Facing those three, two styles, and a little slightly different style, with slightly different personnel groups. So we can learn how to use our rules for all our different defenses.”

Paul Newman also makes a hell of a pasta sauce.

  388. Plunketthead Says:

NAPA — It’s at the most basic level of the game and yet, the Raiders spent much of training camp working on perfecting the art of tackling.

Yes, it’s all about desire, but there’s technique involved as well, obviously.

“As a coach you want to help players get better, so you want to put them in positions, No. 1, where they’re not going to hurt themselves, and this is from teaching little kids to NFL players — you’ve got to teach them how to tackle,” said first-year defensive coordinator Jason Tarver. “You’ve got to teach them to keep their hips down and their eyes up and their feet moving and the correct leverage and know where their help is. So we drill it…we emphasize it in the team period. We talk about, for example, if you and I are going to make a tackle and I’m on the outside of you, I’d say, Outside, outside, outside.

“That lets those players know that I’m on his outside. Those little things and knowing where your help is, makes you a better team, makes you a better tackling team. And then, the body position. So knowing where your help is, and the body position on contact are things we’ve emphasized since Day 1. And you can do that without pads on.”

Strong safety Mike Mitchell came into the NFL with a reputation as a hard hitter and has taken Tarver’s lessons to heart, calling him a “baby genius” earlier in camp.

“Tackling is a mentality,” Mitchell said. “I remember a long time ago, a defensive coordinator I had in college was telling us about Vince Lombardi, and he said, ‘Imagine that someone just took everything that you had…and you had to get it back. That’s tackling.’

“It’s more of a mentality and a desire to want to tackle. We can practice it as much as you want, but there’s that moment in the game, and the guy’s got the ball, you got to have that intent and desire to get him down. We’re all professionals, too, I’ve been playing since I was six, but you know how to tackle, you know how to tackle.”

One of the bigger criticisms of middle linebacker Rolando McClain through his first two seasons in the NFL was his tackling, or lack thereof.

Against Dallas in each team’s exhibition opener on Aug. 13, McClain blasted Cowboys tight end Jason Witten hard enough to lacerate his spleen. But he did not tackle him, per se.

“As he was coming off the field, I said that was a great job on a bootleg, like we’ve been working all camp, now wrap him up,” Tarver said, recalling his brief conversation with McClain. “That’s exactly what I told him.”

And that’s exactly what Tarver preached to his defense all camp.

  389. Plunketthead Says:

NAPA — Richard Seymour has not practiced since Friday night’s exhibition at Arizona, sitting out the last three practices, and while the Raiders defensive tackle has had what’s been described as a troublesome knee early in camp, Seymour sitting out is more a courtesy extended a veteran than anything else.

“It’s not an injury,” said Raiders rookie coach Dennis Allen. “He’s an older veteran guy and his knees get a little sore, so we try to rest him to make sure we get him ready to play.

“When a guy gets more age on him, you have to be careful as far as how much you use him. The deal is we have to get him enough work to get him ready to play, but yet have him ready to play so we can have him for a full 16 games this year.”

Seymour, who turns 33 on Oct. 6, is entering his 12th NFL season.

“I think anytime you go into camp you kind of know at some point in time some of these veteran players are going to need some time off,” Allen said. “He pushed real hard early in camp and then as we kind have gotten into camp, we’ve taken more time off with him.”

Still, Allen said Seymour is expected to play Saturday against Detro

  391. Plunketthead Says:

NAPA — Raiders center Stefen Wisniewski’s strained calf is not only keeping him from live reps in practice but will most likely keep him out of Oakland’s all-important third exhibition game, Saturday against Detroit.

“I wouldn’t expect him to play this week, no,” Raiders coach Dennis Allen said following practice Wednesday.

Wisniewski, the Raiders’ top draft pick out of Penn State in 2011, is learning a new position after excelling at left guard last year. He was injured, though, in the Raiders’ preseason opener against Dallas on Aug. 13.

So is Wisniewski simply too hurt to play this week, or is it too close to the regular season to risk further injury?

“It’s a little bit of both,” Allen said. “If we were in the regular season could he push through and play? Probably. Maybe. I don’t know.

“We’re not going to take that chance right now in a preseason game.”

Alex Parsons has been taking the first-team snaps at center and no matter who gets the call on Sept. 10, he will be the Raiders’ sixth different starting center in as many years.

  392. backstageatapuppetshow Says:

The score of the Detroit game doesn’t mean jack, just ask Richard Seymour…

  393. Plunketthead Says:

NAPA — Stefen Wisniewski missed all of the Raiders’ offseason training programs, having undergone shoulder surgery.

And since the Raiders’ first offensive series against Dallas in each team’s exhibition opener, Wisniewski has been sidelined by a strained calf.

Not exactly what you need from a guy making the transition to center from left guard, right?

“He needs to get the reps,” coach Dennis Allen said Tuesday of Wisniewski. “It’s football and you don’t just show up and play, so every day he’s not out here he’s a little bit farther behind.

“But he’s been keeping up mentally as far as taking the mental reps and in the meetings, but it’s hard to replace those physical reps you get here and in games.”

In his place at center, practice squad refugee Alex Parsons has excelled and all-but-solidified his place on the Raiders’ 53-man roster.

“Offseason was awesome,” Parsons said. “The fact that you get he reps and you’re going against the two tough guys, obviously, Tommy Kelly and (Richard) Seymour. The fact that you get the reps, you can have your system down.”

Parsons said he dropped 18 pounds from the end of last season, which is also helping his play. And appearance.

“I look better in white,” Parsons joked. “I don’t have that gut. There’s a huge difference conditioning-wise as well.”

Getting all of Wisniewski’s reps of late does not hurt, either.

“He’s done well,” Allen said. “He’s done well. As a matter of fact, he was competing the whole time and we were impressed with what we’ve seen out of him. Again, we’ve got a next-man-up philosophy. If Wiz is ready to go, great. If not, then it’s next-man-up and Alex will go in there and play and we expect to see results from him, and he’s given us every indication that we’ll see that.”

    ***

Allen said with Jacoby Ford and his sore left foot — he was still walking around in a boot Tuesday after hurting it Friday — unlikely to play and Denarius Moore still nursing a sore hamstring, undrafted rookie Rod Streater would start at one of the receiver spots against Detroit on Saturday.

“Again, next-man-up philosophy,” Allen said. “He’s the next man up on the list. We put him up and go out and do your job.”

Streater has 13 catches for 109 yards in two preseason games.

“He’s been forced into the starting role and because of injuries, it doesn’t seem like he’s earned it,” said quarterback Carson Palmer. “But he can play with the best of them.”

    ***

Free safety Michael Huff returned to the Raiders after being excused last weekend to attend the birth of his daughter, Madeline Rae.

“She was 6 (pounds), 2 (ounces),” Huff said. “She was born (at) 4:24. That’s a great number, the 24. I made sure I pulled her right out at 24. I was looking at the clock.”

For those of you needing a program, yes, Huff wears No. 24.

  394. Klas Tjorborn Says:

Palmer will get first TD pass. Pryor will score 0 again.

  395. Plunketthead Says:

NAPA, Calif. — Stefen Wisniewski has a tough enough adjustment to make in his second year in the NFL after having changed positions and blocking systems with the Oakland Raiders.

Injuries that are keeping him off the practice field are only making that job more difficult.

After missing all off-season workouts while recovering from shoulder surgery, Wisniewski has now been sidelined more than a week with an injured calf sustained in the exhibition opener.

The lack of time on the practice field for Wisniewski is becoming a growing concern for the Raiders, who are counting on Wisniewski to anchor the line at center this season as the team adapts to the zone blocking system.

“He needs to get the reps,” coach Dennis Allen said Tuesday. “It’s football and you don’t just show up and play so every day he’s not out here he’s a little bit further behind. But he’s been keeping up mentally as far as taking the mental reps and in the meetings but it’s hard to replace those physical reps you get here and in games.”

Wisniewski suffered the shoulder injury in his rookie season and played through a labrum tear for most of the year. He still was impressive for the most part as a key part of Oakland’s line at left guard, but did struggle at times late in the season.

He had surgery after the season and spent the entire off-season program rehabbing, attending meetings and watching his teammates learn a new system as Oakland moved from a power blocking to a zone blocking scheme that puts more emphasis on quickness than strength for linemen.

“You got to be able to move,” Wisniewski said. “If you look at our O-line, that’s one thing we all can do across the board. We can move, we can run, we’re athletic. So I think it’s going to work for us, especially with the speed we’ve got at running back.”

The Raiders were hoping to give Wisniewski a lot of work in training camp to make up for lost time as he moved to center to replace the departed Samson Satele.

But that ended when he left the exhibition opener against Dallas on Aug. 13 following the first drive with the injured calf. He hasn’t practiced since and with less than three weeks until the season opener against San Diego on Sept. 10, time is of the essence to get Wisniewski ready.

“We talk after every series, every play,” backup center Alex Parsons said. “When we’re out here on the field he’ll come up to me and ask me what happened and what I saw and what he saw and we’ll discuss what happened.”

Parsons has gotten plenty of time to work with the first-team line at center. Parsons originally signed with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent out of Southern California in 2010. He was part of the final cuts after each of his first two training camps, spending two years on the practice squad.

He hopes this is the year he finally sticks.

“It’s tough to see your team out there and you practice with them,” Parsons said. “Last year we didn’t travel to road games. It’s one of those things where you look at your team on TV and you wish you were out there. You just have to make the best of your experience now.”

Parsons came back again this season to Oakland hoping to make the squad on his third try. He lost about 20 pounds, which has made him quicker for the new system.

Now he’s getting a chance to show how that helps him on the field and has impressed his teammates so far.

“We didn’t skip a beat with protection calls, we didn’t skip a beat in the run game,” quarterback Carson Palmer said. “Everything was just kind of flowing and easy and there weren’t any mental mistakes as far as that’s concerned. When you’re in the huddle with a guy and you notice that he’s a rookie, that he’s a guy that hasn’t been in the huddle a bunch, that’s concerning, and it’s not that way at all with Alex. He’s been on top of everything.”

  396. Plunketthead Says:

OAKLAND — The Detroit Lions have made it through two preseason games so far, but tonight’s game at Oakland is more significant than their recent loss against Cleveland, or last week’s victory against Baltimore.

Tonight will give Lions fans a better look at this year’s team.

Obviously, a win or loss is not that important, but Detroit’s first-teamers need to show consistency and chemistry, while players off the bench must prove they deserve playing time in 2012.

Here are five things to watch during tonight’s preseason game:

    Like a rookie again
Lions running back Mikel Leshoure is entering his second NFL season, but has never played in an NFL game. An Achilles tendon injury sidelined Leshoure last year. Leshoure was slowed by a hamstring injury this preseason. It appears Leshoure’s injuries are behind him and he is expected to play tonight. Everyone finally gets a chance to see what Leshoure can do in the NFL.

    Bentley back on the road
Rookie cornerback Bill Bentley will have a chance to solidify himself as a starter this season. Bentley started for Detroit in week one of the preseason, but Jacob Lacey received the nod last week. Detroit will likely start Bentley against Oakland at right cornerback, which would indicate it is his position to lose.

    Wonderful Wendling
The less safety Louis Delmas practices, the more John Wendling’s odds of starting on opening day increase. Delmas is recovering from knee surgery, and coach Jim Schwartz has not said if his safety will be ready to play against the St. Louis Rams in week one. Wendling is meeting the expectations of defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham and Schwartz. He can secure their confidence in him with another solid performance.

    A special team
It is never a good sign when Schwartz not only threatens to find better players because he was dissatisfied with a special teams performance, but he turns around and signs receiver Kassim Osgood, a specialist in that area. Schwartz has put his players on notice that subpar play on special teams will not be tolerated. If players do respond this week, they will definitely not like Schwartz’s response when he replaces them.

    Keep the doctor away
When all is said and done, the most important outcome on Saturday is escaping without injuries. As much as coaches, players and fans want their team to play well, avoiding injuries is the only victory that really counts. If players can return to Detroit healthy, everyone can shift their attention toward St. Louis.

  399. Plunketthead Says:

Here are five things to keep an eye on Saturday night as the Lions play the Raiders in their third preseason game:

    • Leshoure thing: Sixteen months after they drafted him, Mikel Leshoure is finally expected to make his Lions debut. Leshoure tore his Achilles tendon last year and missed most of camp this year with a strained hamstring. He’ll play plenty Saturday as the Lions try to get him ready for the season.

    • More: Hope runs deeps for Leshoure’s Lions debut

    • Half and half: Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson and other starters will play about a half Saturday. Pay close attention, cause this will be your last extended look at them until games count.

    • More: QB Kellen Moore locks up Lions’ third-string spot

    • Under cover: The Lions struggled mightily on special teams last week against the Ravens. Keep an eye on their coverage and return units Saturday. They made a few minor changes, and some of the faces you’ll see are fighting for jobs.

    • Rush hour: Oakland ranked seventh in the NFL in rushing last year, so Darren McFadden and Co. should provide a stern test for a Lions defense that struggled stopping the run at times (5.0 ypc allowed). Remember, Stephen Jackson awaits in Week 1.

    • First dance: The Lions’ first-team offense doesn’t have a first-quarter point this preseason. It’s not a huge concern considering how little planning goes into exhibition games. Still, it’d be nice to see Stafford find his rhythm early.

    ——————–

If Matt Flynn cant beat out a rookie, then do we really want Flynn? Flynn has had plenty of time to develop, he should be ready to take over a starting job and take his lumps. But he’s getting beat out by a guy who just showed up? That’s not a good sign.

We’re going to get 4-6 more seasons out of Palmer. Im all for starting to develop our next guy but lets wait til the 2014 draft to do it.

I want to give Pryor all of this year and all of next to show major progress. He doesnt have to beat out Leinart in that time, but he does need to get himself up to snuff and start showing a linear progression that could indicate he’d be ready to be a first time starter by 2016. We should be able to see that trajectory by the end of next season. If he isnt on schedule, then we get someone in the 2014 draft and cut ties with Pryor or make him a TE.

By 2014, Palmer is 34-35. For 2015-16, we let our developmental QB develop on the bench.

We shouldnt be looking forward to anyone else starting a game but Palmer until 2016-17 IMO.

Now two years later, his team is dunking him in ice tubes to “give him an edge” and he has to be carted off the field with an ankle sprain.

People told me, especially KoolKell who couldn’t quite grasp the difference between a Nigerian BORN player and a guy with Nigerian heritage but born in the US, I was nuts and so was the NFL.

    Not so much, it appears.

And as far as Jay Cutler, not only do I feel he is better than Carson Palmer, I feel he is better than Tony Romo, Philip Rivers, Matt Schaubb and Matt Ryan as well.

I recall watching Cutler as a mule warming up to play us and I have rarely seen a QB whip it like that.
Just a natural follow throw motion. More like throwing a fastball then a football.

  412. Bob Marley Says:

    JFB.

I like Jay Cutler as well, as a football fan I enjoy watching that guy throw the ball, to me Cutler and Jeff George are the most natural passers to come into the league since Dan Marino, both had an odd throwing motion and release as opposed to the text-book Montana, Manning or Rodgers over-the-head classic style but those two can laser that ball anywhere in the field in a hurry.

Cutler has already showed much more toughness than George ever did, so the comparison was purely about throwing the ball efficiently, fast and to the spot.

Maybe big Reggie can make a trade for Matt Flynn in the off season if Russel is the man in Seattle.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

I know Wilson looked good, but I don’t see how he can start over Flynn after the contract he signed. Was listening to Pat Kirwan on Sirius who is good friends with Pete Carrol. He thinks it will be Flynn opening day.

Amobi Okoye, who was super-smart and talented, and has already had two teams give up on him before he was 22 years old.

Jeff Otah, known as a loafer and not going to live up to his immense talents.

    And of course Prince.

This is from the article I mentioned:

“And there may have been more to the story. A lot of NFL people are skeptical about Nigerian players like Amukarma. “And it’s not just white men,” one executive said. “It’s whites and blacks.” It’s still a subtle form of racism. The word on Nigerians: they are soft, not tough enough and too educated. It would be a pity if that’s what cost Amukamara.”

Tarver has a master’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology helping him match wits against the offense.

He has to be the “smartest” coach in the NFL.

Looking at our roster we have some 3rd and 4th year guys that have to, and should, have break out seasons.

Shaugnesssy, Houston, Mitchell, McClain, DHB, Veldheer, Myers & Ford were all drafted in2010 or 2009. If these guys all step up and have a solid season, we’ll be in good shape come January.

Don’t question whether or not comments were made. No surprise that a “subtle form of racism exists”. Still see it with black QBs. But you’ve got to be careful not to cherry pick a few guys that haven’t worked out so far to validate this stuff. Okoye wouldn’t be the 1st guy at his position not to meet expectations. And Otah has been dealing with a bum knee for most of his career. The guy had a really good rookie season. There’s talk that the Jets are going to bring him back. The article actually made a distinction between Nigerian-born and 1st generation guys??

  425. DJ Johnny Says:

The “subtle form of racism” that exists for black qb’s also exists for white rb’s if we’re talking about a predisposition or preformed opinions.

    White Rb = slow…maybe a bruiser if he’s a rb at all.

    Black qb= Athletic…running types of qb…never a drop back passer….well RARELY.

One thing about Al is he didn’t care. Mark Van Eeghan is in the team photo of the best white rb’s of all time probably…imagine that.

3 straight yrs. of over 1,000 yds….back when it meant something in a 14 game season and finished 2nd in the NFL in rushing in ‘78. Of course he had that great o-line, but he is the exception.

Who else can u throw out there? Craig James?
