Pryor, Criner enjoy coming-out party

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, August 25th, 2012 at 9:44 pm in Oakland Raiders.

So, that’s what all the fuss was about, eh? Terrelle Pryor was going to revolutionize the quarterback position and rookie wide receiver Juron Criner was going to build upon an off-the-charts showing during offseason workouts.
On Saturday, for one game, at least, Pryor did things few quarterbacks are capable of doing with his feet, made throws befitting a bonafide NFL quarterback and caused people to stand up and take notice. And Criner made not one but two outstanding plays after being silent the first two games and most of training camp.
It was enough to make people wonder what the future holds for the Raiders, with Pryor at quarterback and Criner one of his go-to receivers.
Yet, we’re wise enough to know that what Pryor and Criner did against the Detroit Lions in a 31-20 victory at the Coliseum will be forgotten before long, certainly once the regular season starts in two weeks or so.
Still, it was a show worth watching … over and over again.
The highlights began when Pryor bolted out of the pocket, found a seam, raced through it untouched and rambled 59 yards to the Lions 14-yard line. Two plays later, Pryor capped the scoring drive with an impressive 17-yard run for a touchdown.
On the next series, Pryor benefitted from an interception being negated by a Lions penalty. He made the most of his second chance by delivering a pass down the right sideline that Criner snared above cornerback Alphonso Smith before falling into the end zone for a 39-yard touchdown (It’s worth noting that Criner caught the ball despite being interfered with by Smith on the play).
Two series later, Pryor rolled right, led Criner as he streaked across the middle of field and celebrated as Criner finished off a 76-yard catch-and-run play.
Overall, Pryor completed 3-of-5 passes for 137 yards and 137 yards, good for an impressive 143.8 passer rating. By comparison, starter Carson Palmer completed 17-of-26 for 181 yards, with two interceptions, and a 53.5 passer rating.
“I’m just so happy for him; he works so hard and puts so much time in,” Palmer said. “To have the big plays that he made with his feet and the big throws that he made and the guys step up for him like Juron did; guys have so much confidence in him and I’m just happy for him. Proud of him.”
This was the Pryor that late owner Al Davis envisioned when he surrendered a third round draft pick so that he could select Pryor in the NFL’s supplemental draft a year ago. This was the Criner that coach Dennis Allen witnessed on a regular basis during offseason workouts, when Criner made the difficult look routine.
It remains to be seen whether Pryor and Criner will play much once the regular season starts. However, they went a long way toward showing that they can play well in a game, which goes a long way in coaches’ minds.
If nothing else, it’s a far cry from the inconsistent play by Pryor the first two games. Pryor called his improvement with his comfort managing the game the primary reason for his improved play.
“The first thing that my coach Flip (John DeFilippo, quarterbacks coach) said when I got upstairs was, ‘Man, your huddle presence was 200,000 times better.’ That was the biggest thing that helped me was that I could get out earlier. I could get out and see the defense and break down the possibilities of what the defense could possibly be rather than running up to the huddle and having seven seconds left and I’ve got to snap the ball.”
Pryor was hypercritical of his play against the Dallas Cowboys in a 3-0 loss on Aug. 13. He vowed to play better and be the difference the next time he was in a similar situation.
“I hate losing; that’s just something that carries with me,” Pryor said. “When I play video games, people don’t like playing me in video games because I get mad. I’ll throw and break the controller and go buy another one. That’s just how I am. I’m fiery about that. I hate losing.
“When coaches pick on me and they’re trying to help me out a little bit and they (point out) what I do bad, I hate hearing it. It just drives me crazy and I just go out and work on it by myself until I get it right. I just hate failing.”
No failing grade tonight, only an A+ for Pryor.
As always, Allen was measured in his assessment of Pryor’s performance.
“Terrelle did a nice job,” Allen said. “He came in and threw a couple of nice balls, two for touchdowns, both of them to Criner, so that was good to see. He managed the huddle a lot better in this game, which was really an area of improvement we were looking for out of him. He’s still a work in progress, but I thought he made some strides today.”

– Allen talks about wanting to keep four defensive tackles. At this rate, he might be forced to keep five.
Such is the power of youngsters like Jamie Cumbie and Christo Bilukidi making their presence felt time and again.
“It was good to see Jamie coming back off the injury and play,” Allen said, “so that may be one of those battles that goes right down to the end. Listen, that’s the way we want it. We want competition. We want guys battling, and some of those guys stepped up today.”
On Saturday, Cumbie got his hands in the way of three passes, with the final one setting up a Bilukidi interception.
Cumbie notched two tackles, one sack and the three batted passes, as well as several plays in which he pressured the quarterback. Bilukidi was in on several plays, even if he didn’t get credit for the tackle.
“It’s the kind of game I needed after missing last week and being out some practices,” Cumbie said. “I needed to come out and do something.”
Cumbie just returned from a right foot injury. He and Bilukidi realize that the first roster cuts are Monday and the final one Friday. Time is short to make one final, lasting impression.
“The way to make the team is, stacking practices, showing up on game days, making plays, don’t bust on any assignments,” Bilukidi said. “As a rookie, you don’t want to bust any kind of assignment. You want to show these coaches that you know what to do on the field, show that you’re physical, especially as a defensive lineman.”

– Second-year running back Taiwan Jones played in a game for the first time this season. It’s safe to say that he played well enough to present a strong case for why he should be the primary backup to Darren McFadden.
Jones rushed for 50 yards on 10 carries and caught two passes for 8 yards.
“I was just out there having fun,” Jones said. “When you’re in game mode, you got to be patient with your steps but you just got to cut it loose. That’s what I tried to do.”
It caught Allen’s attention.
“He did some nice things,” Allen said. “He was explosive; he’s obviously really fast. He has a real nice run where he got a little penetration and cut back and was able to get around the defense. That’s one of the things that he gives you is, he does have some real speed, so his ability to get on the edges is good for us.”

– Rookie wide receiver Rod Streater shined for a third straight game. This time, he caught five passes for 56 yards. That gives him 18 catches in three games.
Streater caught only 19 passes for Temple last season, which played a large part of his going undrafted.
“That’s funny, right?” Streater said. “Nineteen catches. It’s a blessing that I’m here and I’ve got an offense that throws me the ball. I just want to continue to make plays and continue to work hard.”

– Shane Lechler punted four times Saturday for a 44.5-yard gross and net average. That marked his first game action this season. He missed considerable practice time, as well as the first two exhibition games, while he recovered from arhtroscopic surgery on his left knee.

– Kicker Sebastian Janikowski suffered a groin injury while attempting to tackle Justin Miller on an 80-yard kick return. Janikowski missed the remainder of the game.
Allen said the Raiders will evaluate Janikowski’s injury and determine the extent. Eddy Carmona replaced Janikowski and kicked well, including a 56-yard field goal at the end of the first half.

– McFadden played quite a bit less than the rest of the first-team offense, though he managed nine carries and two receptions. He also scored Oakland’s first touchdown on a 1-yard burst.
McFadden re-entered the game in that situation, Allen said, because that’s the role he is going to handle during the season.
“When we get down on the goal line, we want to give the ball to our best back and let him punch it in,” Allen said.

– Tight end Brandon Myers returned to action after a shoulder injury and caught five passes for 41 yards. David Ausberry added a 10-yard catch on a play on which he lowered his shoulder and bowled over the tackler.
“Was it perfect? No, it wasn’t perfect, but we did some nice things from the tight end position,” Allen said. “Just looking at it with a naked eye, I was pleased with the tight end position.”

Tonight Pryor showed why Davis drafted him, he showed why d.a & big mck beleive he has huge potential. He also showed why 99 % of the so called fans here that said Pryor should play tight end don’t know what the fugg they are talking about.

Palmer continues to prove that he is beyond washed up. Terrible decisions & awful picks coming at a furious clip from the guy that was supposed to be a major upgrade in Oakland.

This is a full rebuild, if palmer leads us to a losing record & out of contention sit him down & play Pryor. Pryor looked like a real weapon & a vastly improved qb. This kid could be the future & the type of playmaking qb that is all the rage in today’s football.

I want them to let Pryor play more from the shotgun & 3/4 we sets. Making Pryor play the offense as it is set up for Palmer hand cuffs him a bit. However this could just be a part of the vanilla offense for pre season.

As of now Palmer is barely ahead of Pryor in my eyes. Both qbs will turn the ball over, the difference is Pryor isan improving rookie Palmer is a regressing 10 year vet

TP will have it someday … hopefully he doesn’t have to get thrown into the fire too early in his career

Has anybody noticed pryors delivery and much he has improved his mechanics over the last few weeks? This kid needs more reps, he is proving that he will get better the more he plays, & he takes to coaching well as a student.

    I really like this kid

    Mistic,

i was just defending Palmer … although he is a good passer, needs to pull his head out of his azz sometimes. it’s just preseason, i’ll wait…

i always believed TP had potential. he had to shake of 20 months of rust in these last two preseason games to show us what he did tonight. is he like Tebow? at the moment… maybe.. but with faster wheels…

put unlike Capt. Jesus, Pryor has the potential to be a successful passer as well. hey, it eventually worked for mr. dog killer! It was Greg Knapp that called plays for him too… maybe there will be a continuing trend coming up? Knapp knows how to use TP, that much we know…

at this point, Knapp and DA should be incorporating him into ball games. Palmer said himself that they want to “keep defenses on their toes”, this is the way to do it.

Terrelle Fire really lit it up out there and the future looks bright in his light

  11. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

Pryor if the raiders commit to him can be better than Palmer in the long run

  12. xraided Says:

    BTW,

At this point, comparing the arms of CP3 and TP, i’d say Pryor has the advantage in arm strength at the moment. he showed that tonight.

I bet he could keep up better with the speed of our receivers, most importantly D. Moore!

its just accuracy at this point. Pryor gets sent on a bootleg, that man is NOT getting caught, much like Big Baby Ben.

  13. xraided Says:

i’m sure they’ll commit to him sometime after the 2013 season.

still believe Palmer will get his sh!t together. you have to admit that even without many weapons on the field including your #1 receiver in Moore, you’re speed demon Ford, and not much of a TE in Myers, he put together a couple of nice drives.

stop the mistakes, and he’ll be okay. if they continue through the first month of the season, look to see more Pryor packages.

  14. Plunder Says:

I really liked what I saw from Ron Bartell tonight. He’s always been a really solid player. Happy to have him.

  15. Gomer Says:

Palmers picks are just a smokescreen. Wait til the season begins. He’ll be watchin everybody hangin on to his gonads.

I also think Knapp is smokescreenin the dumb schiit role. When we get 1st and goal in the regular season, DMAC will be bust for the pylons. Knapp cant be that big of a dumb schiit, or he wouldn’t be in the NFL (but then again, dont ask)

  16. Jaysohn Says:

Let’s not getcarried away on the Palmer washed up talk and Pryor being anywhere close to being ready. Pryor was 3 for 5 not 20 for 30. He made a few good throws and showed he could run which we already knew. He is basicly our version of Tebow. He is not yet a polished or accurate passer and still has to learn the offense and how to read defenses. Palmer I thought actually had a good game besides the one bad decision on the screen pass that got intercepted. The 2nd interception was a well thrown ball, that pick was on the receiver. Palmer had a couple of other passes that were dropped, plus beyond DHB he is still working with backup receivers who hopefully aren’t going to be his primary targets once the season starts.

  17. DJ Johnny Says:

It’ll be a lot happier around here for the next couple weeks.

We actually have a win to talk about…I know it doesn’t matter (final score-preseason) but if there was one game u wanna win it’s the 3rd one…the “dress rehearsal”. I LOVE Pryor saying he hates to lose.

People were on him for getting down on himself after AZ game, but that’s what motivates him.

Criner? He reminds me alot of Javon Walker (when he was with GB) when Favre had the luxury of just tossin’ it up there and his receivers would come down with it.

  18. Jaysohn Says:

The showing that was much more important was Taiwan Jones. If he can stay healthy he gives the Raiders an explosive backup to McFadden and another big play threat. I was impressed with not only his speed but how physical he was finishing runs.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Funny, watching NFL right now and Elizabeth Hasselbeck’s husband said about the same thing. He and Herm Edwards said there’s no excuses for a veteran QB coming off a full offseason to be turning the ball over the way he is. Hasselbeck said what’s most disturbing about Palmer is the decision making. Said it’s OK for rookies to do stuff like that, but Palmer shouldn’t be. Said that if it continues into the regular season, the fans will remember TP’s performance tonight and it could be a big problem for Palmer. He better cut it out.

We better see very much improved Palmer come regular season or even hard core Palmer supporters like me will be calling for TP.

  26. realtruraider Says:

After watching the replay of that Palmer pick on screen, it was obvious that Taiwan Got straight up mugged on that play, not sure how these replacement refs missed that. Im not as down on Palmer for that pick as I was before. The 2nd int is all on McGee obviously. So overall Palmer had a decent game, looks like he is ready for the season and primed for a big year, which is what all Raider fans should want.

Pryor looked good, reminds me of Tebow. At this point he is not ready to be the 2nd QB, I have ben a fan of his and I hope he can takeover the backup role next year and in 2-3 years hopefully the starter.

  27. DJ Johnny Says:

Palmer has only thrown 3 int’s that were his “fault”. You are nuts if u blame that one to McGee that was batted around as Palmers fault. Nobody in their right mind would.

Did Peyton Manning have a full offseason? He has 3 int’s as well.

I guess there’s “no excuse” for him either.??? And we’ll see how Manning does tomorrow night cuz Palmer has one full game on him.

  28. Dhidee99 Says:

This Not a call for TP because I’m not ready for the TP era. I said it yesterday and some of you thought I was crazy I’ll say it again Palmer Suckz Ballz and we need to cut our losses……

No touchdowns in the Pre-season Palmer is A Sheep in Wolfs clothing he dont have it anymore dude Blows!!

  30. Jaysohn Says:

Not killing the messenger simply stating the obvious which is Pryor is no where near ready to be a starting QB. Of course the fans will remember this one performance but they should also be smart enough to know that just last week the same fans were calling Pryor a bust who should be playing tight end. Not excusing Palmer’s bad decision on the screen pass that was a terrible choice but I also saw he make a lot of smart reads and throws tonight. The reality is out the 3 QBs we have there really is no competition for who is the best. Am I worrried about the interceptions, of course but remember last year even with all the interceptions Palmer and the offense were not the problem. We scored plenty and I expect the offense to be even more efficient this year if D Mac can for once stay healthy. And somehow taking the talking heads at NFL Network as authorities just weakens your point because none of them thinks Pryor is an NFL QQ and how many of them really pay any attention to the Raiders??? They just turn to Mike Mayock and Sapp for uninformed comment. Let’s judge once Moore and Ford are healthy and a starting TE is decided.

  31. Dhidee99 Says:

I’d rather go with Matt Lienart than Carson Palmer. Why is he the Starter anyway? I beleive it’s all politics and the Raiders dont want drama yet with the New Management

  32. realtruraider Says:

Rivers also has 3 int and he didn’t play yesterday so more than likely he would of atleast threw 1 pick

  33. Silverandblack666 Says:

Palmer looked great in the first SD game last year running Hue offense in the no huddle he was harp.

Palmer look confused in this new offense and I hope its like DA and Knapp claim they are just working through things.

I understand this is pre season but this happened last year when our D was getting ran over and they said it would get fixed.

I just want our O to look sharp we were 9th in the league last year with no McFadden for 8 games and 2 different QB’s. We should have a top 10 offense this year or something is not right.

Palmer is the Starter because he is by far the best QB on the roster, its that simple.

  37. Jaysohn Says:

Matt Leinart?? Politics?? This is why fans don’t run teams. So the guy who failed as a starter and is a career backup should now be your starter because he looked decent against 2nd and 3rd string defenses in preseason??

  38. Jaysohn Says:

What free agent would you like the Raiders to sign by the way?? So the team goes 8-8 last year with a defense that was horrible and your bright idea this season is to dump the starting QB.

But you prefer the guy who Quit on his team? witch is worse?

  40. Dhidee99 Says:

They could sign any bum off the streets for the cheap I would take them over Palmer’s over priced butt

  41. RaiderDuck Says:

So if Palmer’s play does stink up the joint (and I DON’T believe it will, but just for the sake of argument), we’ve got a mobile, dynamic young QB ready to come in. Nice dilemma, no?

  42. Jaysohn Says:

Or the guy who got his school placed on probation? Yes because the reality is right Palmer gives the team the best chance to win. Even if you want to blow it up and see Pryor as the future he is nowhere ready to start and Leinart is not better than Palmer period. So even if you are right and he is washed up you might as well play out this year anyway with Palmer and spend the season having the coaches tutor Pryor.

  43. realtruraider Says:

1st team offense put up 247 yards in one half, Palmer had over 180 yards. Still have issues scoring, but I think this has alot more to do with Knapp. we were lucky to get that TD from the one with 4 cracks at it, he is going to have to check his ego and put in some power scheme plays for those situations, put a jumbo package in and put a hat on a hat and punch the fkin ball in the damn endzone. All and all I think we will be more than fine on offense and I hope Knapp is just saving the good stuff for the reg season

  44. Jaysohn Says:

Okay with the “any bum of the street” you just completely confirmed by belief that you are just commenting to be commenting. So you can be ignored now or maybe come back after you have sobered up.

  45. Dhidee99 Says:

BTW the Politics I speak is this the Obvious:#1 The Raiders Spent two Draft picks on Palmer.#2 He is one of the Highest Paid players on the team and not living up to exspectations.#3 Just to jab at your last point you made, Lienart did play well as a starter last year before he got hurt? And I believe that team was in the playoffs.

  46. Jaysohn Says:

I agree that maybe some power plays need to be added or hoping that Wiz at center makes a big difference because Foster has had no problems scoring on those plays the last two years in Houston. I think the line still in there yet with the system.

    ============================================
    Yeah Let the kid play

  50. Jaysohn Says:

Leinart yes played well for one half before he got hurt but so did the 3rd string QB for Houston so that’s not really a jab at my point. The reality is no one was knocking down his door this off season offering him a starting job so that tells you something. As far as the politics, this GM and coaching staff didn’t trade for Palmer so they are not tied to him. I’m pretty sure Dennis Allen’s primary concern right now is putting in the QB who gives him the best chance to win. I don’t think he cares one way or the other otherwise. And are you talking about preseason expectations? and who’s expectations?

  51. Jaysohn Says:

I’m talking about Ohio State probations, DUH

  52. Jaysohn Says:

You know the reason why Pryor was in the supplemental draft in the first place and had to serve game suspensions.

  53. Stringer Bell Says:

Palmer is clearly the number 1 QB on the team. Let TP continue to work hard, learn, and grow as a player. In a year or 2 we can see if he can push Palmer for the starting job. He still has a long way to go. We saw some good things today, but keep in mind this is still the preseason. We still haven’t seen the offense going all out. It will also be more dynamic with Moore and Ford available again. It’s going to be fun watching them open it up on the chargers.

  54. Dhidee99 Says:

expectations of A touchdown pass you had three games to do it Palmer!! he playing like his name is Jessie Palmer

  55. Dhidee99 Says:

Palmer is a liability that is all he does not give us the best chance to wim period!

  56. Jaysohn Says:

That was actually funny. So your saying that any QB who doesn’t throw a touchdown pass in preseason shouldn’t be a starter? But 3 for 5 is enough for you?? I can’t believe your not a head coach in the league.

  57. Jaysohn Says:

So you honestly believe that Leinart or Pryor gives the team the best chance to win?

  58. Jaysohn Says:

I give up. Your too savvy for me.

  59. DJ Johnny Says:

A guy has a good HALF against 2nd and 3rd stringers and some idiots demand he be the starter.

I’m happy he did well in this PRESEASON game.

When talking about regressing, you should keep it to how a qb has done in a reg season game. Plamer’s last reg season game he threw for 417 yds. and 2 td’s and was clutch in ot the week prior to that against KC…on the road in a very hostile environment agaunst a team that beat us bad weeks earlier.

Let’s keep the analysis on games that count.

IF Palmer struggles mightily in REGULAR SEASON than consider possible changes.

This is PRESEASON. Thank goodness for Manning and Rivers too cuz they should be run outta town as well for their int’s.

  60. Stringer Bell Says:

Anyone who can’t see that Palmer is the best QB we’ve had here since Gannon is either blind or has another agenda.

It’s fair to question things in regard to preseason play,,,we do it all the time around here and so does the media but how about switching focus to the fact we just dominated a very good Lions team in the only preseason game that remotely matters.

Defense is looking good in these games. Real good imo. and the offense will only get better.

Make no mistake; Schwartz wanted this game and we took it to him.

    That’s good stuff.

  62. DJ Johnny Says:

    Thank you DJ

yep not bad at all. he has the athleticism and the talent, but also the desire to be a legit qb and not fail (unlike jamarcus)–which i think is really important. give him time to develop and learn under carson and who knows what he’ll be able to do for us in the future.

  78. Orthodoxdj Says:

Palmer is a very good QB. He can be frustrating at times, but I’m glad he’s our starter.

(Hujack would have been promising us the playoffs after this performance). I was there, it was fun and it was awesome to see our varsity dominate their varsity. Let just hope we are better prepared for Seattle than K.C. was. Go Raiders!!!!

BTY – Palmer owns the Chargers. He will beat them on MNF, the home opener.

  90. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

So, the Raids finally caught a break when Matt Lice injured his finger, huh ?

Been saying all along that giving Matt Lice anything more than a bare minimum of snaps was a waste of time.

Have also repeatedly stated that if CP goes down, Raids should roll with TP. No, he isn’t ready, but he might win games with his legs and an occasional deep throw. Lice isn’t going to win games and we have to find out if TP can be a QB or not.

Have also repeatedly said that TP’s ultimate future will be determined by whether he can become an accurate passer.

We already knew he could be an electrifying scrambler.

We had already seen signs that this guy is going to work his tail off and should eventually be able to command the huddle, get plays off on time, and hopefully become adept at reading defenses.

In my mind the book is still out on TP, simply bcz we don’t know if he’ll ever be accurate enough to be a premier QB.

As good as last nights performance was, outside of the throw to Criner on the move – which was extremely accurate and well placed – TP still has a long way to go before doubts regarding his accuracy can be dispelled.

The pick he threw that was negated by penalty was a pretty poor throw. The jump ball TD to Criner wasn’t a great throw either. Got the job done and the result was great – but not a great throw by any means.

Don’t want to temper the enthusiasm over TP. I am solidly in his corner, but I want to keep my assessment of him realistic. TP’s solid performance vindicates what I’ve been saying about the necessity to play him at the expense of giving Lice snaps.

That being said, I still have reservations over whether TP can ever be enough of a thrower to be a top notch NFL QB.

As I said yesterday, I’ll be watching closely for some meaningful throws, in the sense that they demonstrate accuracy, from TP.

I’m looking forward to seeing the entire game this evening. Have only seen a few plays on the NFLN. Pretty good showing from what I did see.

I think it was a pretty good game, defense played great again, offense moved the ball except for Brussels false starts we looked pretty good.I finally glad Allen tried a 4th and 1.

RM99 I feel a lot better with ML backing up than I did with Boler.Hopefully we wont have to see him him play never mind start….but the club has invested in him heavily. All of the guys on the Oline now have to be able to play both sides in the event CP goes down.It must be a pisser for the young guys trying to make the club on the Oline.Beneficial down the road maybe but the righty lefty thing blows.

  94. rob_raider Says:

    what we found out:

we need to watch all of the preseason games before we make any sort of conclusions.

the offense can move the ball like we thought. we’ve still just barely glimpsed what dmc can do and i think he will be the story of the nfl. and palmer is settling in. streater is better than moore or ford at consistently getting open and getting 1st downs. rookie of the year? criner does have ability. pryor? wow! al davis was a tremendous evaluator. yes, his footwork is still in flux but u can see his confidence growing. in time, he could seriously be incredible. they’re aren’t many qb’s who have ever done that this early in career. we haven’t even see what they have planned for reece. myers is a decent TE, 35-40 catches is reasonable. alex parsons could be trouble, and brisiel gets knocked around a little too. really need wiz back. scmitt way better blocker than reece.

houston is gonna have a huge year. realy active. in on a lot of plays. kelly still really good. cumbie making a case for himself? really good at swatting those passes. and a sack too. burris is getting used to the game. he’s really flashing now. he’s way better than curry or mcclain already. bartell and spencer are holding it down. maybe gio needs to start at FS and let huff play nickel.

  99. rob_raider Says:

we went deep to dhb, streeter, and criner. when this offense is at full-go, and dmc is shredding, and we have dhb, streater, moore, jones, and reece invloved, the offense is going to be high-powered. top 5 offense. maybe better.

and the defense looks fantastic. houston is a man on fire. wheeler and burris are aggressive and take good angles. the cb’s can cover. this defense looks very good.

i really believe 11-5 is doable. easily.

  100. Raider Riff Says:

Even when Pryor threw that pick, I wasnt concerned nor condemning the kid. He sold the play action well and for the first time, I saw near flawless mechanics on his part. So I saw improvement, so I was happy. It was improvement that I just didnt expect to see this soon.

The rust is clearly starting to shake off.

For those of you whom want to dump Palmer, get a grip. Even Pryor would disagree with you. He gives Palmer nearly all of the credit for his improvements.

Palmer is missing his favorite receiver. And neither one of the INTs that happened yesterday should have occurred. Taiwan Jones was mugged and McGee owns the 2nd pick. But people will want to see what they want to see.

Speaking of Taiwan, the kid can ball.

Myers played well after some lengthy time off.

Our WR, DLine, and LB corps are showing some serious depth

    Bartell shut down Megatron

Our O-Line did very good considering that was the best D-Line in football.

We have a lot to be excited about. Monday night against the SanDusky Chargers the Black Hole better be sold out, rocking, and ready to explode.

  101. Raider Riff Says:

Its clear who has agendas here. And those agendas seem more important to some of the alleged fans than actually winning.

We should be very concerned about the Seabass injury. Yet all anyone wants to talk about is how bad our starting QB, OC, and MLB are. Haters.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
That’s not going to happen for two reasons.1.The backup Olinemen will be chosen according to their ability to be able to switch from left to right.AD said as much in TC.The starters have all played both sides already.2.AD has said that he’s real comfortable
with ML and he’s looked real solid in the games he’s played. So if they are OK with switching from big arm
righty to noodle arm lefty then Prior gets the space to learn. He gets tossed in the fire if CP goes down and we are 4-10.

  116. Klas Tjorborn Says:

Twinkle, if Palmer goes down, it would be the same thing. Pryor is right handed too. If Matt is QB, season is most likely over. So why not play Pryor?

  117. Twinkle Says:

Because if they put him in too soon and things don’t go well he’ll lose his confidence. One of hardest things to do in life is to develop a very short memory.Throws two picks in a row that cost us a game and he will lose faith
in his ability to make that throw when he has too.
Palmer will go out there and put the thing up the third time…..Pryor has to learn how to forget…quickly.

  118. ddwight Says:

As positive as I feel about Pryors performance, I am extremely concerned about the regression of Palmers. So far it appears that he cannot run Knapps offense (unless they are deliberately being vanilla) and I am not sure how many games its gonna cost the team this year, until something is done. So far what I feared is happening. All the people who wanted Jason Campbell out and promoted Palmer as a savior was premature. Palmer didnt have it when he left Cincinnati, and he doesnt magically have it now. I aint feeling good about Carson. IM CONCERNED!

Good to see typhoon and Goodson healthy, throw in DMAC and Reese and we have an awesome backfield that can run and patch.

I am betting we will be a nightmare for teams to prepare for. On both sides of the ball we are doing something different so they cant go off their old notes.

It all depends on Jano’s injury.

If it’s serious to cost him opening day, then we put him on the PUP list and I dont believe he will cost us a roster spot.

Carmona cleared wires last year so we should be ok if we have to try and put him on the practice squad. But I’d rather not waste a roster spot on having two kickers, even if one is only on the practice squad.

I dont know how some teams get away with having a FG kicker AND a kick off specialist on their 45 who suit up. Thats crazy to me. Then again, Ive never really been in favor of keeping 3 QBs either.

Riff you may well be right but in my experience there is a dearth of kickers in the NFL that can hit a 56 yarder
off the infield dirt at the Colosseum.Fact that’s why Al
drafted Jano in the first round.
The 63 yarder at mile low whatever the 61 yarder into the wind at cleveland….not fuking possible…no way no how…There is not another human being that could have or
could now make that thing….best part was it won the game.

Im not sure what your point is with this post. Its hard to follow.

    Sanjay getting mad rep

At the start of the offseason, Jets receiver Santonio Holmes was viewed by some as a destructive force in the locker room. But Jets coach Rex Ryan still thought of Holmes as not only the Jets’ best receiver, but a player who deserved to be consulted on the direction of the team.

So before Ryan hired Sanjay Lal as the Jets’ new receivers coach, he set up a meeting between Lal and Holmes and asked Holmes to weigh in.

“It was important to make the right hire,” Ryan said, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. “I wanted them to get a feel for each other.”

Holmes said he approved of Lal after meeting him at Ryan’s house.

“Sanjay was the right guy to bring in at the time,” Holmes said. “When we met at Coach Ryan’s house, we saw eye-to-eye with everything that we talked about. He’s a tough-nosed guy, very mechanical, loves to work on technique and doesn’t take any B.S. from the receivers.”

If Holmes is welcoming a coach who won’t take any B.S., that alone is progress in the Jets’ locker room

    Nice job last night Raiders.

    - The offense (starters) has gotten a little better every week, we have dominated yardage and time of pos. each game without a lot of points to show for but it’s looking like we’ll move the ball well enough and that’s how you start.

    - Red zone efficiency probably won’t be what we would like, but there’s still time to work on some options there.

    - Conservative play-calling will remain an issue, that’s just Knapp’s style but as long as we win…I’ll take it.

    - Defense looked solid again, not many blitzes this time around and we didn’t really needed them but I do feel like the Lions didn’t really tested our coverage that much, still a nice showing.

I the end, the most impressive showing last night…

Our OL handling Detroit’s vaunted front four and our front 7, specially the DL, stiffling a premier Offense.

In a game without a ton of game-planning, it’s nice to see we can win the battle at the Line of Scrimage, offensively and defensively.

  153. Bob Marley Says:

    Terrelle Pryor.

I’m just happy for the kid, how can anyone root against him?.

The kid is facing a ton of pressure since he knows almost everybody expects him to fail as a QB, yet he keeps working hard and doing all the little things coaches ask young players to do.

He did not let adversity after a copule of bad outings let him down, he took it like a man and went back to work, no excuses.

I’m definitely a fan, great to see the kid get some reward for his hard work.

Look, Pryor has a long way to go, that’s obvious.

But tonight was a glimpse of his potential.

Remember the kid is more of a rookie than players drafted this year, those guys actually played football in 2011, TP over the past 20 months has played what barely amounts to 1 pre-season game.

TP is getting a little better every day, just like DA said he expected from him, as a recently turned 23 year old with superior athleticism and drive, he’s well worth waiting for.

while longer god allowing and I just hope Tampa or Buffalo grabs him.Piss me off if he ends up in denver or kansas.I believe that Jano’s injury was a hammie that caused us to lose him for awhile. He is constantly straining his groin…which Tom Flores called it as.So I’m not that concerned….but I hope I’m right. If not then we will be carrying two kickers.

  170. Bob Marley Says:

Pryor’s play-making was nice to see, but to watch him get better at the basic QB stuff is the most important development from last night.

I recall DA saying TP needed to work in huddle management, gettting in and out faster and stuff like that, so it was nice to see Pryor get better at it, it shows he’s paying attention and working on what Coaches demand from him.

    As Corkran pointed out above:

Pryor called his improvement with his comfort managing the game the primary reason for his improved play.

“The first thing that my coach Flip (John DeFilippo, quarterbacks coach) said when I got upstairs was, ‘Man, your huddle presence was 200,000 times better.’

That was the biggest thing that helped me was that I could get out earlier. I could get out and see the defense and break down the possibilities of what the defense could possibly be rather than running up to the huddle and having seven seconds left and I’ve got to snap the ball.”

Before we put Pryor into Canton we have to realize that teams will gameplan more agaisnt him if they know he’s starting in reg season and that means keeping him in the pocket where he can’t do much damage with his legs.

He will absolutely need to make throws…which can open things up for him to run around the edge and make plays with his legs.

Last nite was a good sign that he may be able to make a few throws. If he can become a good passer then he can be a crazy threat in this league.

It’s great that TP is making progess as far as huddle presence and management goes.

Have to clear one hurdle at a time.

Still, in the grand scheme of things, this is a rather minor hurdle. Ultimately, TP is going to have to demonstrate the ability to be consistently accurate with his throws.

Think most of us were confident that his scrambling, mobility and ability to extend a play was off the charts good.

The roll and toss to Criner on the crossing route was accurate and very well placed. Far more impressive than the jump ball TD, which was actually underthrown.

The interception that was negated by penalty was a rather poor toss.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. TP appears to be on his way, but there’s still quite a distance to travel.

Again, no hating on Carson Palmer, as I’ve said all along living in SoCal, I have followed his career from the time he played high school in OC. He was highly touted then when he was signed by SC. But, it wasn’t until Norm Chow came to SC who turned Palmer into a Heisman. Then, as the #1 pick overall with the bungles, had one good year at the start of his career when he was surrounded by good WRs. However, 10 years later, he has never lived up to his expectations and salary. Currently, he’s in the top 10 salary for QBs, but would anybody here think is a top 10 QB? Palmer is somewhere in the 20s, and as many fans and critics have said he’s sadly regressing.
If I were Carson and saw what Pryor can do, I too would be lighting a fire on my butt.
Then again, if I were RegMac or Coach Allen, and given that most people are given an 8-8 record for 2012 with Palmer under center, wouldn’t it be better to go with Pryor and take the lumps now, while building for the future?
I know RegMac, the Raiders, and us are stuck with Palmer, however could he be traded? I know the Raiders will never get what was traded away, but you never know, there could be another Hue somewhere out there, no?

He’s a hard guy to figure out, I think the closest comparison would be T.O. not production wise yet, but playing style.

Both are big, strong and long armed, they’re ferocious run-blockers and hard workers and both will drop easy passes, hell TO is still doing it at age 38.

But DHB has similar run after the catch potential and while he’ll never be a true deep threat, CB’s still fear his speed so much that he gets a ton of cushion on most plays.

T.O. became an All-Pro during Knapp’s tenure in SF by catching shorter passes and using his run after catch ability, DHB might be the one player whose game truly fits Knapp’s Offense, his best years may be coming, starting in 2012.

    No doubt Johnny.

But even his biggest fans have been humbled (see RRS and O). They know he’s still a project. We all know that.

All any of us wanted to see was a certain trajectory of progress. And last night he slightly exceeded what many of us expected from him by the end of this preseason game.

IMO he started camp the equivalent of a sophmore in college. He’s progressing at a solid rate and by next year, I’d upgrade his status and expectations accordingly.

We’re not putting him in Canton yet. We’re just excited to see the progress, even if it is little stuff that he shoulda already known coming into the league. The main thing is that this kid has insane work ethic and mentors and it appears to be paying off. That is plenty to be excited about IMO.

The talk of this NFL season is the unprecedented number of rookie and second-year QBs that are going to start for their teams. I mean even Seattle is getting a look at Russell Wilson over Flynn. Russellmania?
People are saying that these teams are willing to gamble and take their lumps now while building their young QBs for the future.
For whatever reason, Pryor, after high school, was one of the top players recruited then, couldn’t he be better than Wilson, Tannehill, Ponder, etc. etc.
Letting Pryor sit behind Palmer makes sense, allegedly, only because Pryor can learn from Palmer, ouch!
Who knows Palmer could be a better QB coach than he ever was as one, by teaching Pryor what not to do.
However, the Raiders could be letting the future go under-developed.
    OK, here’s the over-under question:
How many bad throws and losses by Palmer is the Nation going to take before it starts chanting TERRELLE! TERRELLE! TERRELLE!?

No. They arent just leading a new offense, they are black. Therefore you are swinging from their nuts.

Some people hate black QB’s because theyre black. Some people only root for certain QBs cause they are black.

Both parties are equally stupid as fvck.
    …….

Why would YOU bring race into it? They like Palmer are learning a new offense, but they are rookies & they are learning new teammates. They are out performing Palmer.

    ——–

I apologize. Trash was a poor word. He wasnt “trash”.

He was consistent. Accurate. And not a distraction for the team. He kept things calm. He was poised when things got dicey late in games. And the team seemed to like him well.

But he had way too slow a release for me. And he had slow feet. His mechanics were good, but they were all in slow motion.

IMO, I knew he was a stopgap. Could we have won a SB with him? Of course. If DMC stays healthy and we ran a modern day defensive scheme, Campbell would have been adequate.

I simply saw the offense spark and come to life with Grads. He anticipated throws better. And with Carson, Campbell isnt even in the same league. Seriously dude, one guy is battling for the #2 spot in Chicago and the other is commanding our offense. they arent even close. Probably, for what he does. But a decent long-snapper can be hard to find. No doubt in the next year or two Reggie will draft an OL who can long-snap also, and that’ll be it for Condo. It’s not Condo hate man, he does his snapping job well, but isn’t he highly over-paid??

    =============================================

Probably, for what he does. But a decent long-snapper can be hard to find. No doubt in the next year or two Reggie will draft an OL who can long-snap also, and that’ll be it for Condo. Until then, we’ve got a good snapper, a pretty good kicker (in spite of his screwup last night), and the best punter in NFL history. And it’s a good thing, because Hoffman’s special teams look like a hot mess otherwise.
    ——————–
Yeah man, I don’t proclaim to know the art of long-snapping at all, I wonder how hard it is for a player to master the snap?idk Special teams needs work for sure.

Keep hearing that Goodson is some sort of special teams ace and that his roster space is secure bcz of this.

I know JFB is a proponent of this line of thought.

    I don’t see it.

Has he been used on returns ? Not to my knowledge.

Is he a coverage demon ?

What exactly does he do well ?

    Besides fumble.

I really can’t see him on the roster opening day.

Fully expect the Raids to pick up a bigger, more durable back, one that might be capable of gaining some tough yards between the tackles, should such a back become available.

    Think Goodson will be out.

    ————————————————————————————————————–

The only Special Teams Ace we need is a guy standing near the KR and yelling profusely at him to take a knee after he catches the ball.

Our return avg will increase 9 yds per kickoff on that alone.

    ————-

I dont agree that SB’s define any players legacy.

Eric Dickerson was no less a great RB for never winning one.

    And neither was Dan Marino.

Elway was great before a defense and running game showed up and then he got his two rings.

If youre one of those people who thought higher of Elway after the rings, then you dont know much. He was always great. I hate the guy with a passion but the truth is, he was one of the best ever long before he got the rings.

WCO, Zone running game, and dink and dunk and all of a sudden they win back to back.

Yet we stayed stuck in our 70s offense and defense until Gruden and alleged “noodle” showed up.

Now we got what seems to be a good coach, a modern O and D scheme, and a QB that has made All Pro teams and some arent happy because were not doing it in the asthetic fashion they prefer. Its insanity.

Keep ignoring the fact that Callahan changed our gameplan two days before the SB and that our Pro Bowl center freaked out and left. Ignoring those simple facts really makes your case strong.

Not only do we have an improved scheme that should lessen his snaps and increase his productivity but he knows he won’t back next year with that salary.

Wether the Raiders bring him back or not depends on his willingness to once again re-negotiate his deal and on how far this team goes, if Rich leads this Defense into the playoffs we might want to bring him back for another run.

Anyway, Rich needs to have a big year in order to secure one final contract with us or with someone else and money is the best motivator, even for a consumate Pro like him.

Schwartz wanted that game last night and we took it too him…leaving a bunch of injured Lions in the wake.

But the future of the DL is already here and by 2013 I’d like to see Shaughnessy switching to LDE where he would dominate Right Tackles, then Kelly-Houston-Bryant-Biukidi rotating at DT (provided Seymour leves) and a pass-rusher starting at RDE acquired via Free Agency or the Draft.

And good enoug to be a piece of the team that can be very good. Our o is solid. Atta baby dj Johnny. Palmer himself estimated tha he knew less than half the playbook last year and still threw for almost 3000 yards in 8 games. I am not making the case that Palmer is going to be Tom ” it was a fumble” Brady or neck manning, but he will and is good enough for us to win with. And good enoug to be a piece of the team that can be very good. Our o is solid. Solid RB, solid o line, solid receivers, solid qb…that is what makes a good team…not just one big piece…let’s see how neck does in Denver this year…sure seems that is a one big piece offense.

I think the issue with some fans is that we are all so accustomed to our poor play and unfavorable game outcomes of the last 8 or 9 yrs, that we feed too much into our lows and don’t take with a grain of salt, our highs. It’s only preseason and we have a coaching staff that will get our team to play consistent, disciplined and intelligent football. Progress takes time and our defense is ahead of schedule, offense is getting there and both are getting acclimated to new schemes..ST, not sure what’s going on.

You’re only as good as your last game.
    Just my take.

CP3 must curtail his INTs or we are in trouble. I’ve said before I don’t know who is worst Palmer or Romo when it comes to throwing INTs. Well big ears Romo threw 0 INTs last night. Palmer has what it takes to be an elite QB but throwing too many INTs will keep the Raiders fans on the edge wondering what will happen next. CP3 has all the weapons in the world and should not be throwing sooo many INTs.

Wimpley was a one trick pony. everyone knew that. his sack rate was terrible if you exclude ONE GAME where he went up against a 3rd string LT.

he did NOT do his job, or did you not watch the games last year Twinkle? he couldn’t stop the run to save his life.

the only part of the stat sheet he really showed up on was QB pressures/hurries.

he is a pass rush specialist, with a low sack rate. you can match that production from anywhere. the Raiders do need one it’s true, but he wasn’t worth anything near what he was getting.

  432. Bob Marley Says:

    i will admit about Carson,

his arm strength is suspect. that 41 sideline throw to DHB was terribly under thrown. had it been on time while DHB was in stride, it would have been 6. i hope he’s just warming it up, because we saw a lot of under throws last year.

even if the man does flop for some reason, we don’t have another choice on the team, besides maybe going Tebow mode like the donkos did last year.

come to think of it… it wouldn’t be the worst back up plan in the world. TP, DMC, Jones, Reece(at TE) Moore, DHB, Streater on the field at once? talk about keeping the defenses on their toes.

  447. Plunketthead Says:

I would talk smack but my lips are sealed till I sport a winning record again

  448. xraided Says:

    Twinkle,

sorry i wasn’t trying to rub it in. sorry you can’t watch the games… that’s no good man.

Wimbley showed flashes the year Al traded a 3rd rounder for him. i liked him a lot that year. Marshall had the D blitzing to NO END, which like you said, he took advantage of.

the point is, since that’s really the only thing he’s good at, you can easily throw in a 3rd down pass rusher along with Wheeler threatening from that same end, and get that kind of production (QB pressures and sacks) …

7.5 from wimbley last year, 4 came in one game against Cry me a Rivers. Al loved the man, so he paid him. it was a bloated contract, “out of whack”, and needed to be remedied so BigMac can stay responsible with his money for next year and beyond, where he can go out and get a REAL DE that is multi-functional.

Not comparing Cam to Carson, just saying, JUST LAST YEAR, we saw a rookie QB look a tad overwhelmed in the preseason, than looked like a top 10 QB about 1 quarter into the regular season.

I can picture a few of the posters here dilligently taking notes on every error Palmer makes…however small, and even plays where it isn’t his fault they say “well EVERY int. counts it doesn’t matter how it happened”.

More interested in backing up their hate than the team succeeding.
    ———————–
    Criticism is NOT hate.

I agree. I have criticized Palmer myself. I think he threw a crappy pass on the int. to the lineman, and i’ve been on him for other stuff too but i think it’s obvious there is some predisposed “dislike” i’ll say for the guy when someone calls his int. against AZ “the worst interception in the history of the league’. C’mon.

CP3 is being perceived wrongly. He is a good, serviceable QB, but he has seen his best days. For the 100th time, what you saw last year is the best you’ll get this season. He’ll throw a bonehead INT every game.

I am not sure why Pryor got the criticism he did: if you watch his performances from Ohio State he was dazzling.

One thing not to forget, is that yesterday for the most part TP played against the 2nd and 3rd string D of the Lions. He also played mainly with 2nd and 3rd string Raiders. So maybe one offsets the other.

Odds are is that CP3 might go down for a few games in the regular season and we can see what Pryor will do in real games against 1st string opponents.

Based on his college history he’ll probably rise to the occasion.

Who knows about CP3. He doesn’t seem to be much of a leader. He doesn’t have the same sort of charisma TP has.

TP was saying last week, I am great and I’ll win games on a wholesale basis, if given a chance to develop. TP has confidence that picks up the entire team. TP showed himself yesterday, and was impressive.

To go back to CP3, doing the same thing – throwing boneheaded INT’s with a lack of running ability, is a letdown, to say the least.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

On what basis do you this this claim? The presumption is that 90% of the posters here know nothing while somehow you have the inside track on “what is going on out there on the field.”

You are a former NFL player of staff member?

Also you state: “Did you see Palmer try to run over a defender at the 4 yard line last night? Or Palmer grabbing one of their LB’s off the pile on the McFadden score and throwing him back? Well, the Raider players saw it. And they love the guy. Those things are not lost on the players.”

First, CP3 needed to redeem himself after reverting to a bone-headed INT, which he’ll continue to throw. He better congratulate the defense for pulling out the second half for him, because that is what happened.

Last, you state “But backslide’s favorite team the Whiners are about to come on”, which is false. They are my second favorite team after the “Raiders.”

And what do you mean they are “about to come on”?

  538. DJ Johnny Says:

Instead of knee jerk reactions to a rookie having a good half of football (which i loved by the way) let’s talk about the fact we spanked the Lions in the most important of the preseason matchups.

We kicked their butt, and Pryor helped make it happen.

It’s only preseason… but it was fun.

  539. RaidO Says:

According to TP it sounds like they are not giving him enough practice time and holding him back. Reason for the improvement? They need to let him play with the first stringers:

    TP:
“I felt real comfortable because when I was with the [third team unit] I would get like 10 plays in practice. That’s not really enough for me that I can really get the feel for it. They say that you win games in practice, and I wasn’t winning in practice with 10 plays, it’s impossible. I’m not really getting the feel for the exact plays that I’m going to be running whereas this week I kind of did. It was good to get extra reps behind Carson. It was great”

  540. lefty12 Says:

That’s the point. Palmer didn’t need to redeem himself. Palmer was playing with DHB, Rod Streater, and Eddie McGee two of which have never started an NFL game in their lives against one of last years playoff teams. And they left the game with the lead. And more yardage. Even with two turnovers.

Pryor is still far from where I would like him to be; but he took a big step. Has to prove hecan nail intermediate throws from the pocket before I’d move him up on the depth chart; but he could be a year and another training camp away if he applies himself.

DVD needs another 15 lbs before he tries to square somebody up like that on the sideline…Hahaha; got trucked for real

& last but not least; can we please take Goodson off KR?

what do all the top 10 QBs have throughout the league? a good TE that’s reliable on 3rd and whatever … MOVE THE CHAINS. it’s doubtful that the Raiders currently have a 700+ yard TE on the roster.

the only hope i have is that Reece will have a big job lining up at TE this year. he’ll shred LB’s or DE’s trying to blanket him.

it’s either that or maybe since the SeaChunks have Winslow, they’d be willing to unload Zach Miller’s contract by us giving them a conditional 5th round pick in the 2014 draft! haha! it would be low risk high reward … seeing as his contract is high. Zach is in a system that doesn’t favor TE’s in SEA …

he would be way better than anything we’ve got… Knapp has a capable QB to get to TE’s, and Greg just happened to have already worked with Zach… match made in heaven if the price is right.

I don’t know. Gronkowski, Graham, Davis, Gates, Finley, Gonzalez. Those are all playoff teams. what they need is a move the chains TE, and they will be unstoppable. Knapp loves throwing to TE’s, so i’m willing to believe he has a game plan, one that doesn’t involve the 3 he has on the roster currently.

    FB: Reece, Schmitt

    TE: Meyrs, Gordon

OT: Vehldeer, Barnes (could be the best tackle combo in the NFL),

OG: Brisiel, Bergstrom, Carlisle (could put Wisniewski at the front of this pack if allen really likes having Parsons at center).

    C : Wisniewski, Parsons

ST: Lechler, (Condo could be a casualty if the raiders need to carmona for a few games until jano is healthy)

DT: Seymour, Kelley, Bryant, Biloduki, Cumbie (one may be traded, but none will be cut).

DE: Shaughnessy, Houston, Tollefson (crawford more than likely, but not a lock, at least practice squad if survives waivers),

OLB: Wheeler, Burris, Ihenacho, Kilgore (screw it, he’s gotta be a lock- original content to follow), (Curry if healthy, would not be surprised if Kilgore also- hope so),

    MLB: McClain, Goethel

    S: Branch, Huff, Mitchell, Giordano,

    CB: Spencer, Bartell, Chekwa

    That’s 16 offensive positions locked,
    one special teams,
21 on defense for 38 total plus a PK; that leaves 14 positions open; althoguh I’m sure GM, HC, and assistants know who the top 50-53 are.

WR locks; Moore, DHB, Ford, Streater, Criner if healthy all five will be active each game.

    6th spot open for Mcgee, Carswell, T.O., Chad, ….lol just kidding;

would not be a bit surprised if they try to move Ausberry back to WR and get him to lose some weight again, which should not be difficult) and pick up another TE.

probably be a FA pick up that is a special teamer (gunner or returner).

that makes 21 on O, 21 on D, two STs (whoever the PK is), 44 spots taken

the coaches probably told him to just do what ever it took to score last game, and that meant boot legging out of the pocket with those 4.3 wheels and heaving it down the field. he agreed and made it a reality last night.

    ===========================================

I would certainly would debate you on this. The lst TD to Criner was actually a poorly thrown pass that Criner really made a nice play on. That ball was waaay underthrown to Criner, not laid out for him. The second pass to Criner was better, it hit Criner in stride, but still off Criners shoe tops. Criner REALLY made those two plays. And, Pryor had a very bad pick negated by penalty that most fans are never going to remember.
On the other hand, Mike Vick was always a remarkably accurate passer. That is why he was a consensus overall number one. Teams knew they would not have to develop that. Now, that accuracy has not always translated statistically. Most coaches have wanted Mike to stand in there and heave the rock. And when Mike has done that, he has done well, but Mike likes to run around to the chagrin of his coaches. And that sometimes takes away from his accuracy, and their game plans.

as soon as he gets his mechanics down to a tee and can show us touch passes on short routes(on the run and in the pocket), that man will be very hard to stop.

    Seymour,

about Vick in ATL, he had a lot of accuracy issues. he NEVER REACHED 60% COMP. in his 5 years in ATL. nadda once! Palmer even did that was for us in 9.5 games last year with some putrid decision making.

  680. xraided Says:

correction: Vick didn’t reach the 60% completion mark in 3 full seasons in ATL that he was actually healthy.

No the atl knapp offense would do Pryor no favors. He would be much better in a spread shotgun that relied on intermediate passing misdirection, & the occasinal deep shot More like the offense that tebow ran last year
    ===================================================

Wind back to the game vs SD at SD last year. That is the Palmer we got if Knapp allows him to unleash his strength. IE, no huddle, spread WRs’, play fake, and CP3 is a pocket passer. Knapp very well could be the problem, not Palmer.

  682. Seymour Bush Says:

Mike is also like 55-35 as a starter in this league. That ain’t bad.

The only real issue with Carson Palmer is he will throw picks. And if you break down those picks, a lot of them come on the short routes. Like the screen pass yesterday. Palmer and the offense should be focusing on intermediate to longer patterns which Palmer throws remarkably well.

  688. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

That kick by Carmona was pretty good.
56 yards and kicking on the A’s infield. Not bad.

On top of that the infield had been messed up some.
Not that it matters to the A’s since they’re not going anywhere.

I still think Pryor is going to be the #3 QB and as such he will be inactive on game day.
If he would work as a reciever in practice and still take his limited snaps as the #3 QB, he would have a chance to be active when our recievers get banged up.
The guy has too much talent to sit around on game day doing nothing.
    …………

    Terrible idea
    1. He would be robbed of a chance to develop as a qb wasting time in we meetings & missing qb meetings/ practice.
    2. He has never been anyhthing other than a qb his whole life. He couldn’t be expected to learn a new position in 1 pre season game & a live nfl season.
    3. It stunts the growth of qbs see morsels Stewart brad smith & joe Webb.
    4. He will never get ahead if the quality wrs we have on this roster. You would be taking a real wr off the field to force a convert project.

He is qb nothing more, let him sink or swim at his natural position

  693. Guber Says:

Carson Palmer didn’t change teams this offseason, but he might has well have. Palmer is learning a new offense in Oakland once again, and he’s not a natural fit for Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Knapp’s timing West Coast offense. It has showed this preseason.

Facing a banged-up Detroit Lions secondary, Palmer struggled again Saturday night with two interceptions. He has averaged under six yards per attempt in 58 preseason throws with no scores and four picks overall. His top receivers Denarius Moore and Jacoby Ford might miss Week 1. Palmer does not look comfortable. He might have had a cameo in Oakland last year, but it sure looks like he’s starting from scratch because of the coaching change.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    No doubt.
Pryor is fortunate. He’s playing behind a really good QB who can teach him a lot and he knows it.
But he is the number three quarterback with a lot to learn.

You have to admire Prior’s motivation.
Everyone keeps telling him to be a tight end and he just keeps on insisting that he wants to be a QB.
    The kid’s got grit.

Myers is a gamer. No he can’t give you a big Jommy Graham play; but how many TEs can? Myers was out there every week ready to battle last year too; & his durability shouldn’t be questioned.

    #######################

I like Myers alot. Reminds me of Zach, who he learned from. Myers took alot of notes from Kevin Boss as well. Not sure how well he blocks yet, Haven’t seen enough of that.
I’m not sure why Myers doesn’t get much love, maybe because he’s not a household name. I think he will be solid and would be my MUP pick.

  710. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

Myers is just an average tight end.
Al didn’t bring him in to replace Zach Miller, he brought him in because he was a good blocker.
Al didn’t want Miller to go but he thought he could sign him cheap and Al blew that one.

  711. lefty12 Says:

Myers isn’t flashy so some don’t give him any credit. He just goes out and does his job-blocks and catches what is thrown to him.Miller was let go,Boss was let go but Myers is still here. That should tell you something.

  730. DJ Johnny Says:

Pretty fair analysis on that segment I thought.

It IS a little alarming the (amt of int’s)…but like McGinest said “He’s a veteran. He’ll get it together”.

It is true we can’t just ignore the int’s, but i think Carson and Knapp need to get together ..and DA…heck bring Reg in too, and design this offense to fit Palmer’s skills and abilities.

  731. DJ Johnny Says:

They brought up the possibility his “issues” stem from receivers, new system, etc. but brought up the int #’s and asked McGinest and whoever that other doofus is if it’s cause for concern.

It wasn’t a slam fest but it brought up valid concerns.
