Report: Raiders agree to deal with veteran returner

By Steve Corkran
Monday, August 27th, 2012 at 11:05 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen apparently wasn’t kidding when he said Monday that, yes, it’s possible that his kick returner wasn’t yet on the roster. A few hours later, ProFootballTalk.com reported that the Raiders agreed to terms with return specialist Roscoe Parrish.
The Raiders would not confirm nor deny the report, per beat writer Jerry McDonald. However, the move makes perfect sense, given lingering injuries to primary returners Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore.
Parrish spent his first seven NFL seasons with the Buffalo Bills before he bolted for the San Diego Chargers in free agency this offseason. For whatever reason, the Chargers released Parrish when they pared their roster to 75 players.
Parrish returned 135 punts (12.0-yard average, three touchdowns) and 29 kicks (23.6 avg., no touchdowns) for the Bills.
Parrish, 30, missed all but two games last season with an ankle injury. He also plays wide receiver, with 134 catches for 1,502 yards and seven touchdowns to his credit.
If the deal is consummated the Raiders will have to make a roster move, given they are at the maximum 75 right now.

    You know that’s right.

  10. JB Says:

Maybe “glass” Ford gets traded? It’s a possibility. They can safely cut Haslam. He hasn’t done squat the entire time he’s been here.

  11. rob_raider Says:

signing roscoe parrish makes sense but it’s not a guarantee that he makes the team. with ford out for now, the return game has been poor. moore is out as well. and jones has been hurt and never has done much back there anyway, plus he’s injury prone and important as the #2 rb. ford is NOT a punt returner anyway. looks very tentative when he can’t jet out of the endzone on a sprint, like on kickoffs. and do we really want moore getting clobbered when he comes back? it’s mccann that i thought might make sense there but he hasn’t been given much of a chance, which is strange since he seems to be getting quite a chance as a cb. but parrish is a legit return man and could stick. but he won’t factor all that much as a wr, if moore and ford come back. but he could get some time there if they don’t right away. a good signing.

  12. raidertalk Says:

    Interesting,
Reggie Mac hasn’t really spent too much. This is going to be the year of bite your nails and hold your breath.
Our starting Middle Linebacker may be out depending on the court/NFL suspension process and our starting Running Back has yet to play a whole season without injury.
Fellow Raider fans, get ready for the roller-coaster.

The team will be watching and praying everytime DMAC takes the ball.

The only back ups are Miller and Goodson, once they are in–its target Carson Palmer.

I guess 7 million is not enough for any veteran talent anymore for a one year deal. Must be that these guys want more security.
Maybe the organization just does not want to spend, but we will see if anything happens between now and 12 days…

  13. Kirk Says:

DMAC should not be running the ball in short yardage situations.

I would keep Miller for that.

  14. raidertalk Says:

Well, atleast Reggie Mac has some more options to look at now that teams have cut their rosters. Maybe he can scoop up a good short yardage back.

Aside from that, this is gonna be a cardiac season I think. We are starting a rook LB in Burris if Curry is not good to go. If DMAC goes down, Jones is a complete question mark as is Miller. Our recievers are good but not reliable injury wise and CP can only do so much with rookie Wrs out there.

The stars are gonna have to align perfectly for this tean to succeed down the stretch–I mean no injuries or suspensions.

  15. raidertalk Says:

The good news is that DA and Tarver seem to be vast upgrades at coach from last year. I think from that alone we should be alot better on Defense. The coaching staff looks alot better equiped to mask weaknesses in this D.

  16. raidertalk Says:

Just a thought, maybe my fellow Raiders fans can answer this…
Would it be possible to lay down some astro-turf for preseason and the first couple of weeks only until baseball is over? We all know that it looks unprofessional and all. I mean grass can survive a day being covered right? Why not cover that damn infield dirt along with the whole grass for game day and then pull it back for the As?

Is this not feasible, please let me know.

  17. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

Parrish leaves the Bills in free agency to go to the dischargers and then they cut him?

There has to be something still wrong with his ankle.

  18. papertiger418 Says:

A step in the right direction; low risk, high reward. Besides, Roscoe is the perfect name for a Raider!

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I have no idea but if that was going to happen it would have happened already since it’s been going on for decades.

I feel for you since I’m a baseball fan and the situation with the two teams in that stadium is ridiculous.
What moron ever thought that stadium would be suitable for baseball?

If the Raiders-and the A’s- can somehow come up with the financing they need to emulate the SF Giants and build their own stadiums on the same site.

It may be awhile before they paid off the loan but in time they would be in a really powerful position with loads of money.

  20. raidertalk Says:

Hopefully Roscoe pans out because I’d rather see DMoore at WR where he is a better threat.

  21. raidertalk Says:

Never been to where the Giants play but it looks a hell of alot better than Candlestick did, on TV anyway. What trips me out is that there’s that part of candlestick that they haven’t filled out yet, its like a big gap in the side of the stadium since baseball moved out. Doesn’t really bother me though as I’m not a whiner fan though

  22. backstageatapuppetshow Says:

This is a great move for reasons mentioned above as well as taking advantage of an old AL DAVIS trick.

Certainly we will be able to derive some valuable information regarding the Chargers Offense.

    Great Move Reggie!

    ;)

  23. Carl Weathers Says:

Good pick up Reggie, if he’s healthy. I see a lot of bills games and he has looked impressive many times. I wonder if he’s here for insurance on the Ford, or to take McCanns roster spot.

  24. Rezinator Says:

    Sign Jabar gafney!

  25. rediaR Says:

Upgrade at 6th WR. Sorry McGee. Maybe practice squad again.
Upgrade at PR (at least in not using the starters there)

    I’m good with this.

  30. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

We are unlikely to learn anything from Parrish that we don’t already know.

The guy was barely there–OTA’s and I don’t think he was even used much in preseason games.

If the dischargers were so set at that position they wouldn’t have picked him up from the Bills as a free agent and to then just release him suggests that his ankle may still be a problem.

  31. RaiderRockstar Says:

Roscoe Parrish is a smurf at 5′9″ 175 lbs

ran a 4.37 forty at the combine (Al Davis would approve)

    bye Jacoby!!

Reggie will trade JFORD for a bag of peanuts

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

True, and I like McKenzie because he does do his homework.

I think the reality though is that it doesn’t cost us a lot to pick up Parrish up so you might as well but we’re not going to learn much from him about the dischargers.

It also tells us that our special teams may be just as bad as they look.

  36. Just Fire Baby Says:

    I like the move.

I see it as McCann out or Ford to the the PUP, Parish in.

DVD/Chekwa breath a sigh of relief with the return man probably not being a DB now.

  37. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

Well, it can’re really be a bad because we’re not goinging to lose much if his ankle doesn’t hold up.

All I know is that last year he only played two games because of that ankle.

  38. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

    *move

  39. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

True, and I like McKenzie because he does do his homework.

    —–
You have to watch it. It is easily the best show on television, maybe ever.

  47. Just Fire Baby Says:

Wonder if Parish is the given return man for the first few weeks, or if he is playing for a roster spot on Thursday.

Not that I am an expert on Bills football, but I seem to remember him being better as a PR than KR.

Which would be great news, as punt returners are much more valuable than kickoff guys these days, with dang near every kick going 7+ yards deep in the end zone.

  48. Bob Marley Says:

I’m not sure Roscoe Parrish makes the final cut, I mean, he was not among San Diego’s top 75 players and he’s making our team?.

I think he’s just an insurance signing in case Ford is not ready by week 1, would not be surprised if Coaches just want to take a look at him this week before he gets cut on monday, then keep him on speed-dial in case he’s needed during the regular season.

Parrish can definitely be a quality return man when healthy, but he’s played just 35-of-64 games over the past four years.

  49. Bob Marley Says:

Besides, we could have Devin Hester out there and he would suck too if we don’t fix our ST’s.

I know the team is saying it was hard the first 3 pre-season games with so many players trying to grab a spot there but I watched a few other games and nobody looked as bad as us.

Seattle has great ST’s units, let’s see where we’re at now.

  50. Just Fire Baby Says:

I don’t think Parish is even being considered as an option as WR, outside of maybe a screen pass or reverse here and there.

We need a returner, who can return both kicks and punts, and Parish is pretty good at that.

Or at least he WAS. Maybe that ship has sailed, we will see.

  51. Klas Tjorborn Says:

Need someone to return kicks. Ford and Moore are both injury prone.

Is it me or is does our roster not seem a little crowded to have a ST return ace? For arguments sake, lets say Parrish is decent. What is he going to do that a 5th or 6th CB cant do? DVD is fast as heck. What is keeping him from pulling duty? Cant catch a punt?

We would like to keep 5 DTs

We would like to keep 5 Safeties

We would like to keep 6 WRs (at least I would like to keep McGee)

We would like to keep 5, possibly 6, CBs (Bartell, Spencer, Lee, Checkwa, McCann/DVD?)

And now we are adding a ST ace? It seem like a tight fit to me. We’re lucky Jano’s injury isnt serious enough to have to keep a 2nd kicker.

Good morning and great signing by Reg! Klas, I offered a proposition yesterday…The US sends the Swedes Snooki in exchange for a case of MAX burgers!
    ———
No Guidos! Send us Sooki from True Blood and you got a deal:

    ————————-
Alright man, but since Sooki is smokin’ hot, just add pepperjack cheese to the burgers and it’s a deal!
    —–
We will also throw in some of those blueberry milk shakes and Stellan Skarsgard

    ———————
You’ve got yourself a deal sir! I wanted to ask for the shakes, but didn’t want to drive an unfair bargain.lol

May have been a fluke, but it actually happened.

Have you watched NFL Network’s adds for their “a footbll life” series?.

They speak about the legends of the game and stuff like that, show clips of Hall of Fame players and Coaches…and right in the middle they show a Tebow clip…LOL.

    ———-

No NFL network for me here in Italy at the moment. I only bought the basic package that gives me only the Raider games online.

But I did see on their website that they will be doing a episode on him.

Shebow has taken the Brian Bosworth school of marketing and added a heavy dose of religion and its worked magnificently.

  164. Raideraholic (AKAHairyBush) Says:

I just got to watch the OAK/DET game and here are my observations-

-Good to see Taiwan take advantage and seize the backup roll.

    -DMAC keep it up!

-Streater, What can I say? I like a good underdog story, apperently so does Palmer.

-Wheeler is going to put up some #’s this year

-T.Pryor did everything in his power to make me eat my words, well done kid!

-Criner, good to see we have some depth at wideout

-DHB, I’m liking what I’m seeing. I also notice the way he blocks on running plays-Respect!

-Our speacial teams need help! (Ecspeacialy coverage units)

    -bring back Justin Miller J/K

-Little to many penalties for my liking

-Wish Stafford would have been in game little longer so we could better gauge defense, although Shaun Hill is respectable-I guess.

-What was up with not throwing to Megatron?
Was coverage that good or was he not part of the gameplan to keep him healthy?

-Carmona is a Jabroni but nice job with a 56 yarder off the dirt.

    -Palmer will be fine

I’m sure there’s more but overall more positive than neagative. Good sign in the 3rd preseason game where it actually matters a little bit.

  180. Charlie Says:

Regardless of potential you have to be able to play to add value. Seymour and Curry are classic examples of the Patriots and Seahawks getting rid of poor value.

We will carry an extra Dlineman when we cut down. Not necessarily an extra DT. We can shift Houston inside.
Seymour will not be in the NFL next year. We will let him go out on his terms this year. We got screwed on the Seymour deal. Terrible value.

    Curry will get cut.

Moore will make it this year. Streater, DHB and Crinor will be getting all of the snaps early in the year.
Ford is a niche player that with Parrish on the team may be expendable. Far too injury prone and can not function in the red zone.

After Friday’s cuts we will be active with other teams cast offs.

    WR – Darrius Heyward-Bey

    Gaffney over Ford imo

Only way that comes close to happening is if Ford ends up on the PUP list.

Yep. But I think Jones gets the shot at KR duties first.
    ————–
I agree, Just wonder if we want to expose Jones to more chance of injury when he likely will be the “feature back” when DMAC goes down at some point this season. tough call.
Also, let’s face it, Kickoffs are less important and you are less likely to have an “explosive” play with the new rules and all. Not a big priority imo

Plus, I’ve yet to see him have a good return. His speed doesn’t help him much in that regard; he likes to dance too much. Seen him run right up to the wedge and freeze, trying to decide which way to go, then BAAAMMM….Gets hammered.
Jacoby, on the other hand seems like a natural born kick returner but WR skills are secondary. With Jones I think it’s the other way around.

  243. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

Hmmmm this is very interesting. The raiders have a problem, 3 of the 4 most explosive players on offense are injury prone players. Moore, and ford dmac are guys that scare the hell out of any defense, but they also scare the hell out of the raiders front office with injury after injury. These guys are not reliable and i wouldnt be terribly surprised if going into 2013 1-2 of these guys are gone. i believe that although big mck is well aware of the talent he isnt going to keep players that cant stay on the field. like palmer i believe these players are also on a one year try out and it is imperative that they stay on the field in the regular season. As of now our best offensive player is DHB, because of his production, play making ability, and most of all his durability and toughness. he is the only play maker that we can rely on going back to last season.

If i were these 4 teams i would be calling vy right now

1.) carolina, although newton is firmly entrenched as the starter their offensive identity is driven on Cams duals threat abilty. Vy while not nearly as good of a passer would fit well into this scheme. he is also worlds better than the rest of the qbs on that roster. as it stands now no cam no season, however vy could definitively solve that issue, and the offense would not drastically change with otu cam the way it does now.

2.) cleveland they have invested in what they believe is the future in weeden, and they have competent veterans in wallace and mccoy, but only wallace has played a decent pre season. Wallace has no shot at starting for the browns as he is a poor mans jeff garcia. weeden may improve but im not sold. i believe that vy having spent time in a wco (philly) could upgrade this unit. he could sign as a back up and hope to hang around as the weeden story unfolds.

3.) arizona, there is a major qb controversy in the dessert, because all of the qb have sucked out loud. Vy could sign there and may get a shot to start by seasons end. Or hope to compete for the starting job in 2013 as there is no qb of the future in sight at the moment.

4.) tampa bay, freeman is the starter but if he goes down they have nothing. Vy could serve as a capable, and provide good insurance veteran back up

knapp should incorpaorate some jet sweep action into the offense when pryor is in the game. the jet sweep and sweep fake would set up even more roll out opportunities for pryor.

jet sweep with parish/ ford/ dhb/ moore is a handful for any defense, especially when you have a qb that can keep the ball and pop out the back end for a long gain or score. The jety wsweep action is even more of a hedache when your qb can roll out go through 4 reads and throw to 4th read deep on a dime like pryor does here (HIS FOURTH READ!!!!)

Once I start seeing the 2nd team LB’s and DB’s covering kicks, then I will judge. Special teams should be fun to watch in this last game as it will be the only way the bubble players will make this team. Bodies should be flying around the field trying to make an impression.

I don’t like the Goodson trade. I want Beast Campbell back.

    =======================================

    Why? Campbell was awful.
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!

Dude just turned 24. We need a backup OT, and the kid is worth developing IMO.

Barksdale and Bergstrom are both better than Campbell and have higher upsides. To get anything of value for Campbell was a bonus. I consider the Goodson trade a win for the new regime.

Would not be surprised to see the #Raiders bring in veteran tight end Chris Cooley for a look-see, assuming he gets cut today, as reported.

Cooley would be a nice add to the passing offense. He has always been under rated IMO…

  296. Raideraholic (AKAHairyBush) Says:

    Redskins released TE Chris Cooley.
Coach Mike Shanahan suggested Cooley requested his release because the nine-year veteran wants a starting job. It’s likely a moot point, however. Due nearly $4 million as a backup tight end/fullback, Cooley was squarely on the roster bubble heading into cut-down weekend. A major injury question mark coming off a season ruined by knee problems, Cooley is unlikely to accrue reliable fantasy value no matter where he lands.
