Sense of urgency falls upon Raiders

By Steve Corkran
Monday, August 27th, 2012 at 3:18 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen had a little extra bounce in his step, seemed a bit more energized and ready for the long grind that is the regular season. It’s amazing what three nights sleeping in your own bed can do for a person, eh, coach?
So it was that the Raiders practiced in Alameda on Monday for the first time since breaking camp in Napa last Thursday. It’s the place they will call home base for the next five months or so, perhaps longer if they make it to the Super Bowl.
“It’s nice to get back home,” Allen said. “I got a chance to sleep in my own bed a couple nights, so that was good. It’s good. I thought we had a good day of work today. It’s good for us to get back in this environment, get our guys used to the locker room here, the practice facility, the weight room, all of that kind of good stuff.”
At the same time, moving to the year-round facility, combined with 12 players being jettisoned in the first round of roster cuts Monday, signals to the players that things are different now than they were the past five months or so.
“Every time you change the surroundings, people realize there’s a little something different,” Allen said. “Getting back here, it’s kind of, we’re getting close. Everybody feels the sense that we’re getting close to the opening day of the season.”
Rookie guard Tony Bergstrom said seeing so many familiar faces gone in a flash is a sobering reminder of how fleeting it can be for an NFL player.
“It’s crazy,” Bergstrom said. “It just makes you want to go that much harder in practice because you never know. It kind of makes you realize that this is a business and it’s not necessarily a nice business all the time, either. So, it makes you really appreciate you being here as long as you have and you just want to hold on that much longer.”

– Defensive lineman Lamarr Houston was asked by coaches to shed 10 pounds from his 305-pound frame during the offseason. In response, Houston lost 20.
Now, the Raiders are reaping the dividends from a player who is lighter, faster and more active on the field.
“He’s actually quicker than he was in OTAs and minicamp,” Allen said. “He’s lost some weight, he’s in good shape. He played outstanding the other night and if he continues to develop the way that he has and work the way he has, I would expect good things out of him.”
Houston said he didn’t want to lose much more than the 20 pounds he did because of the potential of being used inside, when he isn’t playing end.
“I kept in mind I would be playing inside a little bit,” Houston said. “So you can’t be too much smaller than 285, or 295, really. You get a lot of doubles and things like that, block-backs with the center and things like that.”

– Allen said he isn’t sure if defensive tackle Richard Seymour will play Thursday night against the Seattle Seahawks. Seymour still is resting his sore knee in an attempt to get healthy enough for the regular season.
Allen said Seymour is battling through tendinitis. Seymour said it’s more a case of what’s called the effects of playing 12 years in the NFL.
“I don’t think this is a situation where we have to carry somebody extra because of his situation,” Allen said. “It’s just something we’ll have to manage as we go throughout the season. I’ve been through that provess before with Darren Sharper in New Orleans, a guy that was a little bit long in the tooth. So we had to take care of him. We had to manage him. It’s not unlike any other situation I’ve dealt with.”

– When Carson Palmer entered the NFL in 2003, he latched on to veteran Jon Kitna as a way of learning the ropes and expediting his learning curve as a young quarterback.
Like any good veteran, Palmer now is paying back on the advance he received from Kitna by mentoring second-year quarterback Terrelle Pryor.
“I want to because I like Terrelle, but also that’s part of my role,” Palmer said. “That’s my job. When you’re a quarterback as a veteran, like myself, I’ve been trained very well by a guy named Jon Kitna I was fortunate enough to play behind for my first couple years in the NFL.
“He really showed me how to be a pro, how to watch film, how to work out. He showed me all the small things a coach can’t show you, and I’ll never forget that. And that’s now the role I have with Terrelle or with whatever younger quarterback comes around. Just comes with the territory.”
Pryor stays real close to Palmer at all times, soaking up every bit of knowledge he can from Palmer, be it on the practice field, on the sideline, in positional and team meetings, the weight room, you name it.
That process began midway through last season, when Palmer arrived via trade with the Cincinnati Bengals. Almost a year later, Palmer said he has noticed a huge change in Pryor’s performance.
“A ton,” Palmer said, when asked how much change he has noticed. “When I first got here, he wasn’t getting a ton of reps, so for training camp he got 30-40 percent of the reps during camp and he’s improved drastically.”

– Linebacker Aaron Curry still hasn’t been cleared to practice because of balky knees. The Raiders have until Friday to decide what to do with Curry — leave him on the physically unable to perform list, carry him on the 53-man roster, place him on injured-reserve, release him, something.
Allen said he still hasn’t decided how to proceed.
“I’m going to wait until the very last minute to make the decision on what we need to do with him,” Allen said.
Curry has not practiced in more than two months. He spent time in Los Angeles earlier this month seeking a second opinion and receiving treatments.
Curry was unavailable for comment Monday.

– Palmer arrived as the No. 1 pick in the 2003 NFL draft, so he couldn’t be any further removed from the path taken by undrated wide receiver Rod Streater. Yet, Palmer said he has an idea for what Streater is going through.
“When you’re a sixth-, seventh-round draft choice or a free agent, there’s a little bit of doubt,” Palmer said. “Why didn’t I get picked? Why did I get picked so late? Maybe I can’t play in this league. There’s some things that can kind of sink into your head. I haven’t specifically talked to him about that, but I’m sure there’s a little bit of that in there, coming from a Wing-T offense, catching 15, 16 balls his senior year.
“The one thing he’s realized is he can play. He can play with the best, he can win a one-on-one route against any corner, starter or backup corner. And that’s one of the biggest hurdles a young guy has to get over is you really don’t know if you can do it consistently. And he’s consistently done it every single practice, every single day. So confidence-wise, I don’t think he has any issue confidence-wise.”
Streater actually caught 19 passes at Temple last season. The Raiders liked what they saw in Streater and signed him soon after this year’s draft ended.
Through three games, Streater has caught 18 passes for 165 yards and no touchdowns. He has played well enough in training camp and those three games to be considered a lock to make the 53-man roster.
Allen, as usual, has a knack for keeping things in proper perspective.
“I’ve said this before about Rod; he’s done a nice job as a rookie coming in,” Allen said. “He’s an undrafted free agent player that we felt real good about. He’s one of the top guys that we wanted to get when it came to free agency, so he’s done a good job for us. He’s got to continue to develop and get better. I’m not ready to put him in the Hall of Fame. Still got a long way to go but right now he’s made some good progress.”

– Thursday provides the 75 players on the roster one final chance to make a compelling case for why they deserve playing time in the regular season and/or spots on the 53-man roster.
The final roster cuts are less than 24 hours after that game. Naturally, Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie will take into account numerous things when deciding which 22 players to purge from the roster.
Just the same, that final game has the ability to sway opinion one way or the other, Allen said.
“What that exact number is, I don’t know, but there’s still a lot of decisions to be made,” Allen said. “There’s still a lot of decisions to be made as far as who’s on the 53-man roster. And these guys are playing not only to make our roster but they’re playing to make 31 other teams, too. It’s a big game for a lot of people.”

– Starting cornerbacks Ron Bartell and Shawntae Spencer played in only 10 games combined last season, with Bartell missing all but one game because of a neck injury.
Yet, the Raiders saw something in the 30-year-olds that convinced them that Bartell and Spencer would be an upgrade over canned starters Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson.
Allen said it remains to be seen whether the Raiders made the right call. For now, he is pleased with the way Bartell and Spencer have played.
“There’s a hunger there,” Allen said. “There’s a hunger there to go out and reprove themselves, that they belong in this league. It takes awhile to kind of get the rust knocked off, but I’ve been pleased with the way that both of those guys have played.
“Not just the way they’ve played, but the way they’ve handled themselves in the locker room, the way they’ve handled themselves in the meeting room gives us a chance to have some veteran guys that can teach some of the younger guys really what it means to be a pro.”

– The Raiders might luck out and get back injured wide receivers Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore in time for the regular-season opener. It’s going to take more than luck for those guys and Palmer to get in synch after missing so much time together in camp and games.
“We need a ton of work together,” Palmer said. “You can never get enough work with a guy, even if he’s played every rep and you’ve played every rep, you always need those reps. When they’re back, it’s not easy to get off the couch or get out of a walking boot or off crutches or whatever it may be and just show up and play.
“This league is way too good. These players are too good, these schemes are too good just to jump back in and go. So there’s going to be a little bit of a process of getting their legs back and their conditioning back, but also their minds and bodies to the speed of the game to get caught up with everything.”

    Debo,

    We are all bored too.

What I think you should do is go to the deep south, hire a personal trainer and take charge of the personal and professional resurrection of JR.

Only then will your eyes be open.

And by the way Debo, you make some interesting comments except this JR affair.
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Glad you like some of my comments. But I guess you’ll have to take the what you see as the good ones with what you see as the bad. I’m convinced that if our organization had conducted itself even close to the way Baltimore’s has, JR chances of success go up exponentially. There were a lot of players that suffered here as a result of our shenanigans. Pisses me off to no end because you don’t get the opportunity to draft that high very often and there were so many naysayers that said it wouldn’t work:

“I think JaMarcus Russell to the Raiders scares me. I would have done the exact same thing Oakland did, to be sure. But the formula for early success is a bad one there. So much pressure on him to perform well early, with such a porous offensive line, and who knows what at wideout.”

I’m expecting some surprise cuts and trades this week.

Brisiel, Cooper, or Nix to Tampa Bay, Pittsburg, or Seattle.

Goodson, L. Miller and/or DVD or Chekwa to Detoit or Miami.

Barksdale (if not one of the above guards)to New York (A).
    =============================================

Not a lot of trading of lower tier players goes on. Teams know they will cut.

I can’t wait for MNF vs Chargers kick-off. It’s time to let the players make plays. The defense will be ELITE.

there are olinemen and linbackers today that run faster 40 times than some of those old safties and DBs. I mean come on lefty I know your from the oldschool but facts are facts and those guys from back then were just too slow to cover anybody let alone a Randy Moss type.

    ——-

And Ive already shown you that the QB’s back then never would have gotten the ball off to Moss. Or, they would have been hauled off on a stretcher by the 3rd attempt.

Riff you missed my rebuttal when I stated olines are much more athletic and better pass protectors today which is why they get paid big bucks now unlike before.

Never thought JR was as bad in interviews as people on this board have said he was. I always thought he was very forthright and gracious. But it cracks me up that some people try to make a correlation between speech patterns and QB play. Ever heard Kevin Kolb in an interview?? The guy should run for public office. Seen him play QB? He shouldn’t.

  24. rob_raider Says:

myers was a pretty good TE in college but he is only so-so at this level. he can run a decent route and get open sometimes. and he will catch what’s around him most of the time. but he will not get much after the catch. he’s a decent if unspectacular blocker. he’s basically a solid backup. ausberry is a WR in a TE’s body. meaning, he doesn’t block well. and probably never will. gordon is big and athletic. he was recruited to miami for a reason. he can beat lb’s in coverage easily, but has a reputation for having paddles for hands. he’s made some catches recently but it’s hard to think he could become a bigtime receiver. we are stuck for the moment with myers.

East, dont try the baloney about “new more athletic lineman today”. Defenses have never been so complex. The blitz’s have never came from more angles. If QBs were allowed to be hit, most wouldnt survive.

You lost this debate. Atkinson ran a 4.3, that kills most of your whole argument. Youre clinging to your belief anyways. It doesnt look good. There’s no shame in admitting that Moss is “only” the 5th or 6th greatest WR of all time.

Wrong again. In 2009, JR didn’t have Jerry Porter. More importantly, Culpepper, Walter and McCown didn’t have to play with Murphy and DHB (both rookies) as starters. And Bruise didn’t start one game without Chaz (our best receiver by far) as a starter. What did Bruise do when he replaced JR at halftime of the Jets and Chiefs games? Not a damn thing. On the flip side, JR was making a superstar out of Chaz at the end of 2008 and during the 2009 preseason before he got hurt. And when he got back in the lineup against Denver, he pulled out an improbable win considering how poor the pass pro was that day. Who was his go-to guy? Chaz. And when the hell did any of those other guys play with Kwame Harris at LT?? As far as running the entire offense, which offense are you talking about? He had to learn a completely new one after we let Knapp and DeFillipo go after the 2008 season (terrible decision).

It’s like saying Dwight Howard wouldn’t dominate in the mid 1900s because Bill Russell was kinda awesome.

    ——–

And Dwight would not have dominated. He has too slow of feet. Post play is all about footwork.

Since Shaq came into the league David Stern had the refs call the games differently so that Shaq could get away with numerous offensive fouls. Great rebounder and defender Shaq was, offensive weapon he wasnt. We know what happened when he went up against a true HOF center in Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaq got schooled. Then he later got schooled by David Robinson. Then the rules changed in his favor.

And dont say that Shaq got better with age. His game NEVER changed. He was the exact same player in his prime that he was in his early days. In fact, early on I think he was better being that he was about 80 lbs lighter and could really run the floor.

Centers of the 80s and 90s would eat guys like Shaq up for lunch.

Dwight Howard though I think could have been great. Really great but he should have went and played 3 years at Georgetown to learn the game more. AAU bball has killed the sport. So what. Exotic blitz’s still made the 5 & 7 step drops useless until the new rules made QBs untouchable.

Moss’ game doesnt work unless a QB has all day to sit back there.
    ___________________
doesnt take Moss all day to get downfield 4.2 speed buddy
and the exotic blitzs you speak of have been around awhile see pitt from early 90’s

    ———-

Since when did I say exotic blitz’s were new? I just said that the QB being off limits has made blitzing less effective than it once was. The QB being off limits is a new phenomenon that has artificially boosted offensive numbers and extended the careers of players that never would have lasted earlier in the NFL. That isnt a unreasonable claim.

4.2 is great. Try it more than once and Reggie White would have put your QB on the IR.

Suh would do the same thing if it didnt cost him 100k every time he hit the QB a tad late.

there are tons of idiots out there. lots of black and white cliches. russell woulda seemed cool if he was any good. unfortunately, he was a really big kid with a great arm that had a big game against notre dame. which led to him getting a ton of money and he immediately found it really important to be a “player” and have a huge entourage and drink cough syrup and but lots of flashy stuff. then he lost all of his physical ability. a sad commentary on what we all know: lots of poor black kids idolize the wrong guys. but look at the beverly hillbillies. u can take the hoodrat/hillbilly out of the hood/hills but u can’t take the hood/hills out of the hoodrat/hillbilly.

Yeah, but it’s too bad that stereotype doesn’t apply to the Ryan Fitzpatrick’s of the world. His going into the tank last year almost perfectly coincided with the huge contract he signed. Yet not a peep from anyone about him being “overpaid” or “getting lazy once he got paid”. Chris Johnson must be jealous.

Reason being, he actually gave a sh!t and continued to reportedly work hard throughout the season and offseason. Not to mention his stud RB getting hurt to go along with a star studded WR core with the house hold name of Stevie Johnson being his #1. Chris Johnson held out of camp and DEMANDED a raise. *******************

hahahahaha!!!!!! yeah, those sweaters started with bill cosby. and got worse and worse.

and now i understand debo. he thinks wearing the super-nugget diamonds and fur coats and shades and all that are “going against the grain”. actually not. just about every poor black guy who idolizes pimps and hustlers would do the same thing when they struck it rich. if anything, he was doing exactly what was expected by so many naysayers. but u can get away with it if ur good. unfortunately he wasn’t.

    **************

nope. i’m not anti-young-black-people. i actually dig the look. he looked like andre 3000 or huggy bear. but it is a sign sometimes of a guy whose priorities are wrong. there are plenty of young black guys who make it big but don’t instantly become a look-a-like for superfly. the point is that regardless of his style, he wasn’t being original and more importantly, it’s the only thing he seemed to care about. flaunting his wealth and trying to act like a “baller” and sucking big time at football.
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Flaunting his wealth, huh? Like Joe Namath? And my point has always been that he didn’t suck nearly as much as he’s been accused of. He actually managed to salvage a pretty decent year in his 1st year as a starter, just ask Greg Knapp. 2009 was a disaster, but he was only a small part of the problem in my opinion. Al must’ve shared that opinion because just a year later, he cleaned house. He fails on just about any other team, except for the Browns or the Millen-led Lions, and you may have a point. But there’s no question in my mind that he was with the worst organization in the NFL between 2002-2009 at the height of its dysfunction. Collateral damage.

Kids dont get coached these days. AAU is horrible for the game. They dont learn the mental side of it. And it’s a shame because it’s robbing us fans of a lot of insanely good players that would have been even better than the guys in the 90s. The physical talent these days is better than ever. But the game itself has never been played or ref’d poorer.

It really depends on what era of refs we are talking. The game was ref’d differently back in the 90s.

If its the ‘00 era and later, sure, Shaq dominates and so does Lebron. But in real basketball, Lebron ends up playing power forward against Rodman, and Rodman handles him just like he used to handle Karl Malone.

Been a Raider fan for 30 years. Defended Al’s decisions no matter how crazy they seemed until he dumped JR. That really opened my eyes to the dysfunction and I was pissed that JR got scapegoated. Still a fan, but now I’m much more critical. Not quite the same without the uniqueness of Al, but it’s a new beginning. Still think a few more changes need to take place, but I’m on board with the new reginme.

but ryan fitzpatrick earned his money on an nfl field. he actually had a good year. russell sucked all the time.
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Had a good year????? When?? He threw 17 picks during the 2nd half of last season. He made Carson look like Aaron Rodgers! And that’s with a supposed genious IQ (proof that NFL football isn’t for rocket scientists). Didn’t come close to making the playoffs. How the hell is that a good year?
    ***************

the year before, he had what was considered a breakout year. and he started off well last year. look, he’s probably not hat good. a guy who overachieved and may never be that good again. but russell never approached what fitzpatrick has already done. russell showed flashes of promise. i had hopes too. but his own actions doomed him. i make a case that he caused the raiders to look far worse than the raiders made him look. he might have been good if he would have tried and not been a drug addict.

as for namath, that’s my point. have all the flair and style u want but be good on the field. otherwise, u look like an idiot.

  168. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

breaking down the raider game vs detroit, i want to give palmer a little credit. Palmer teased us with a very nice opening drive, and the second possession was nice as well. he made throws to every level looked smooth in the pocket and had the offense moving. he played under control.

palmer also looked to DHB and this is going to be very important. For as many people rip DHB his hard work and natural talent have made him clearly the best receiver on the team. The deep pass to DHB was clearly nder thrown and could have been picked, however DHB was able to go up and make the play. You can live with a deep ball that isnt exactly perfect when you have a receiver in one on one coverage that is able to high point the ball. people will argue that palmer was “bailed out” by the wr, but this was the right read and executed well enough as the qb and receiver always have the advantage in this scenario.

Palmer must replicate his first two drives and get the ball to his best wr early and often if he wants to have a decent season.

He didn’t have nearly as much time at Fitz. It takes a while for young QBs. The fact that he showed flashes, especially when some of them came late in 2009, during the summer and in the 1st minicamp, makes me think Al should have been a little more patient. The guy had only been a starter for a season and a half. Hue was in the building and DHB and Murphy had more experience. Chaz was back. There was a real QB with experience and professionalism as a mentor/competition on the roster in JC. I think Al gave up too soon and will leave it at that.

Palmer setting up a screen never stops his feet while back pedaling with defenders not even within 3 yards of him, chucks to the d tackle.

palmer looked ridiculous on this series of plays and these play will cause a team to lose. These are the exact kind of plays other qbs have been blasted here before.

On palmers 2nd pick the ball should have been caught. It is true that the pass wasnt very accurate as mcghee had to climb the l;adder but that is the type of play an nfl receiver is supposed to make, and will need to make as the qb wont always have the luxury of perfect set up and delivery. palmer was under pressure but the part that bothers me was the decision to throw it to guy that was surrounded by three defenders. not a good gamble, and poor execution.

Ok this is true I have watched the game 3 times….

lets just say for the sake of argument that Knapp and DA are telling the truth when asked about Palmer’s play this preseason and were trying something different on that series as a result Palmer got confused and still tried to force the play He and everyone on the O looked sloppy…..could it be the very same “scheme we blamed our defense for playing last year that made them look confused, out of place and stupid at times?

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Not that I remember. But if he did, the background check must have come back pretty clean, suggesting he didn’t have a drug addiction. He went #1 after all.

Were the same team that drafted Marinovich. Al didnt care about your past. So dont use Russels draft status as a barometer for his sobriety.

Can we move past this? Yes, Russel had some really good qualities. And we’ll never know how good he could have been cause this org was a dumpster fire. Coaching carousel, worst WR’s in league, poor O-Line, owner with dimensia, etc.

  230. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

terrell pryors second attempt was even more impressive. TP took the snap from center and dropped back looking to his right, he then scanned over the field all the way the far left going through his reads. pryor then unloosed a very nice pass to the fb on a short out pattern in perfect synch. The fb dropped the ball but pryor gong through his full progression and picking out the guy in single coverage is something peole said he could not do. then he topped off with a throw that had enough zip to get there in a hurry but enough touch to make an easy catch. This throw also was thrown in enough time for the fb to make the easy catch and have room to turn up the field as the pass led him into the clear.

The more he plays the better he gets., the more i watch the more i love.

terrell pryor has shown a very good understanding of how to set up receivers to make plays when he throws the ball. this is very encouraging. On his first pass attempt of the game he hit the receiver with a very nice back shoulder throw. he took the ball from center dropped back smooothly and delivered a perfect pass.

very very nice from the rookie
    =========================================

Pryor looked MUCH improved as far as his actual throwing mechanics are concerned. The ball actually spiraled instead of going end over end (just kidding.) He is still not an NFL ready player, but he is progressing which is all you can ask at this point.

Red flag?? Who gives a fck if he ballooned in the OFSEASON?? Did it affect him at LSU? The guy is a legend there! Too much made about his weight. He was built like a DE, that was part of the appeal. All the hits he took and he never got hurt. Fearless in the face of a pass rush, to the point that he was labelled here as having no pocket presence. Nerves of steel late in games, just like LSU days. Too much attention paid to his negatives and not a peep from anyone on this board about his positives and the challenges he faced here. It’s like everyone wanted the guy to fail from the beginning.

I trade the FOREX everyday and I follow the Euro closely….its been an interesting ride.

    ———————-

    Well, take this into consideration:

Iraq, Iran, and Libya, and (possibly but I dobut) Saudi Arabia all were talking about switching the standard currency for which they trade oil in.

The currency in which oil is traded, becomes the standard international currency.

We have massive trade deficits around the world, most notably to China. We are only able to run up such debt because of our strong economy, military reputation, and the fact that we print fiat currency with no real backing.

The moment the standard international currency changes, we can no longer just print our own money to pay people back. They will ask to be paid in Euros. And then we are really f’d.

All the turmoil in the middle east the last 15 years is a result of us trying to keep those nations in line. But the Euro continued to gain strength so then the banks stepped in.

The Euro will be toast soon. Thats my theory at least.

243. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

Of course the best play of the pre seaosn was also delivered by Pryor. he took the snap from center and executed a perfect play fake, the defense was not fooled. pryors back was to the defense but he appeared to feel the pressure chasing him form behind. he started his roll out and again patiently read the defense. althoguh he fast a s a the fastest kick returner he only used enough speed to buy time to scan the field, and was not looking to take off. he spotted criner clearing open deep down the field, and without even setting his feet he let go of a perfectly thrown ball that led criner away from the defense and into the end zone.

that play perfectly illustrates what pryor can do in an offense that utilizes his talent. the misdirection on the play fake , the speed to buy time looking to pass, and the arm to make huge mind blowing plays deep down field.

pryor put on the best show of any qb we have on our team in this preseason arguably.

all that talk about moving him to tight end certainly looks foolish in the light of pryors accomplishments.

Just because he doesn’t pass you’re eyeball test doesn’t mean he was out of shape. I guess you think Brady Quinn should be a Pro Bowler. I’ll take the guy who pulled out the Denver game any day of the week. And the playbook?? “WELL DOCUMENTED”? Where the Hell do you get you’re information?? Even if that were true, it’d make perfect sense for a guy going into his 2nd year as a starter in a new offense. Of course he probably didn’t have the whole playbook down. The playbook has been “dumbed down” for every young QB since the beginning of time. What makes JR such an outlier in your eyes? Marino was famous for telling the coaches to keep things simple. Knapp better not forget to throw screens to DMC and Reece.

Also throw some quick out of the backfield plays with Ford also like what was done last year.

He needs to utilize ALL the speed weapons on offense to confuse defenses and get the ball to his speed guys in open space.

If JaMarcus Russell hasn’t hit bottom yet, we are not looking forward to what’s coming next.

The latest embarrassment for the former No. 1 overall pick: Russell’s “life coach” John Lucas told Russell he would no longer work with him and asked Russell to leave Houston, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports.

Just think about that for a second. A man who is getting paid to help Russell, a man who makes a career out of rehabilitating athletes, gave up on the kid.

Russell reportedly worked hard after starting to work with Lucas last September, but he quickly lost focus. He showed up to NFL workouts last November and December out of shape, and his work habits “continued to deteriorate.” Lucas grew tired of trying to get Russell to care.

“The title of your article should be, ‘It’s Over,’ ” one source told Cole. “It’s just amazing that you could say that about somebody who is 25 years old and just got drafted four years ago. Put Reece in as the goal line back.

Or if they are going to use DMC as goal line, they need to throw that isolation quick pitch to him, so he can use his speed to race to the pylon and get into end zone.

Game tapes from last year. Having the ability to speak well and effectively communicate isn’t any guarantee that a guy can play QB.

TP’s drops, footwork and mechanics seem OK to me. Then again, I’m not a QB guru. I’m sure he can work on, refine and improve these aspects.

Never was a big believer that a QB’s (or pitcher’s) throwing motion or delivery could be substantially modified with any success.

When it comes to throwing, you pretty much ‘are what you are’.

Might be able to get a throw off quicker, learn to quit tapping the ball, hold the ball in a different position while scanning the field – but your throwing motion isn’t going to change much.

I don’t care if Tim Tebow spends 20 years trying to change his motion. It is what it is.

Not saying guys can’t get better and even improve accuracy – but there’s only so much that can be done.

It’s like a guy that isn’t a good shooter in hoops. Can he get better by tons of practice and refining his release? Sure. But only so much. He’s never going to have a natural stroke and drain them like Reggie Williams.

TP’s footwork will be fine. The jury is still out on his accuracy.

One final thought – On TP’s touchdown run, I don’t believe he ever seriously considered throwing the ball once he broke containment – but it’s important to note that he was scanning the field and considering that option, even if he didn’t know what he was looking at.

That was more impressive and important to me than the run itself.

    Thinking like a QB.

But even this might prove to be a pre-season mirage.

On offense, I don’t see the corner being turned at all.

I’ve seen some stuff from Mistic that could be considered racist.

I remember the “That’s a black man kicking your asses” comment in reference to JC and his critics.

Yes, that might have been in response to some racist remarks that were made about JC, but it still doesn’t excuse Mistic taking the bait and going down the same avenue.

But if he did, so what ?

Didn’t really bother me, anyway. JC wasn’t kicking any one’s ass here, just Mistic being Mistic.

Heck, I was accused of being a racist for calling JC, ‘JaJason’.

Take it with a grain of salt.

I happen to think that everyone is race conscious to a certain degree.

Mistic is just a little more obvious about it than most.

Doesn’t make his football observations or player evaluations necessarily incorrect.

Although he sure as hell was wrong about JC being the second coming.

Anyone else is concerned with Seymour contradicting the young HC about nature of his bad knee? It seems like he is a bigger authority than HC in the club house. And he didn’t like HC use the word arthritis. No matter what you call his knee ailment big Rich will not give Raiders $13M worth of service this year. Agreed?
Basically He gave his best years of his career to New England cheaters, and helped them win three superbowls while they were under paying him. And now we are over paying him while he’s under performing for us on the field. And he will retire as a NE Cheater when he’s done collecting Raiders’ hefty pay checks. Does that sound right to you people?
I know Reggie’s hand are tied based on large gaurantee salary Al gave him but still I got an issue with the under performing part of it all.

Yes. His knees should be thouroughly toast by the end of the yr. if not sooner, and despite NE trading him to Raiders, he will most likely sign a one day contract so he can retire a patriot.

Maybe he’ll even shed a few tears for his beloved Pats and tearily than Belichik for giving him the honor of playing for him and the wonderful Kraft family.

    =============================================
Yep. We’re loaded at the skill positions. DMAC and TJones are as explosive a tandem as any. Reese can make a play. WR corps is somewhat green, but I think will prove to be very, very good.

With the exception of TE, we’re stacked.

Even though we’re talking skill positions – would add that the OLine, while not great, is good enough.

If we can get some solid QB play there isn’t a reason (besides Knapp) that this unit shouldn’t be championship caliber.

If Ford wants to stay cool he needs to stop being an injured pssy…stop the partying and live up to his full potential….sick of this schit man

  421. Thec Says:

A misconception I see on this blog is the clamouring or stating some guy is a No.1 Wr for this team.

The way this team is constructed, and based on the D schmema we face, you are going to see a diffrent WR lead in stats week to week.

Thats why it is better if ALL our weopons are healthy as it gives the DCO something else to worry about.

no starting 5 can beat them OG

    Magic schits on Jkidd
    Jordan clowns Kobe
    Bird outsmarts and outhearts Lebron
    Duncan fundamentally beats all PFs

And no center…hell no player in history ever may be better Kareem…Shaq? No way…Wilt? forget about it..Russell is greatest winner ever and would never wanna see the Captain…and this is coming from a major Laker hater

If you wanna combine entire career from HS to Pros…who better than Kareem?

Teams WILL attempt to take away the no 1 guy.

We saw a great illustration of this with megatron sat.

Who is the Raids current go to guy.

That would be predicated on several factors.

    Down
    Distance
    D schematic

As an example, I have seen JFORD targeted by Palmer or 3rd downs. He may have been drawing the single.

I am not of the mindset that we have to have a go to guy for any given situation, I am more inclined to TAKE, what the D is giving me.

Or in our case just TAKE what we want.

  431. RaiderDuck Says:

    So how about this:

    PG: Cousy
    SG: Jordan
    SF: Bird
    PF: Rodman
    C: Wilt

6th Man: Magic (can play ANY position on the floor)

  468. rob_raider Says:

signing roscoe parrish makes sense but it’s not a guarantee that he makes the team. with ford out for now, the return game has been poor. moore is out as well. and jones has been hurt and never has done much back there anyway, plus he’s injury prone and important as the #2 rb. ford is NOT a punt returner anyway. looks very tentative when he can’t jet out of the endzone on a sprint, like on kickoffs. and do we really want moore getting clobbered when he comes back? it’s mccann that i thought might make sense there but he hasn’t been given much of a chance, which is strange since he seems to be getting quite a chance as a cb. but parrish is a legit return man and could stick. but he won’t factor all that much as a wr, if moore and ford come back. but he could get some time there if they don’t right away. a good signing.
