Parrish practicing with Raiders

By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, August 28th, 2012 at 11:59 am in Oakland Raiders.

Wide receiver/returner Roscoe Parrish is at practice, wearing No. 18, and taking part in all the drills, only hours after he signed with the Raiders.
Parrish is wearing the number last worn by wide receiver Louis Murphy. Parrish’s wore No. 11 with the Buffalo Bills. However, that is taken by kicker Sebastian Janikowski.
Given Parrish had been active and health-free, he is exempt from the three-day acclimation period afforded injured players. Therefore, he is able to practice right away, as well as play in Oakland’s game against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night.
We won’t know until after practice how coach Dennis Allen intends to use Parrish and whether Parrish will play Thursday.
Kick returner Jacoby Ford still is recovering from a left foot injury. Punt returner Denarius Moore is fighting through a lingering hamstring injury.
At this point, it’s not a stretch to envision Parrish handling all return duties in the regular-season opener against the San Diego Chargers on Sept. 10.
It’s also not out of the question for Parrish to remain in the fold when Ford and Moore return to full strength, at least on punt returns, his specialty.

– Ford, Moore, defensive tackle Richard Seymour, linebacker Aaron Curry and center Stefen Wisniewski are not practicing. Tight end Richard Gordon returned to practice after missing a stretch with sore ribs.

– Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and defensive coordinator Jason Tarver are slated to speak with the media this afternoon. So, expect plenty from them in a later post.

– Parrish also is scheduled to address the media soon after practice.

– Today’s practice is the final one before the roster cutdown to 53 players Friday. Therefore, the game Thursday night will be the last chance for players to make a favorable impression upon the coaches.

When has it been temporary? If dmc and dr.jones go down for a while we’ll have to add a rb off the couch.
    —————
absolutley, I’m just saying to do that when the time comes. Unless there is someone worth adding now of course.

  10. DennisAllensVisor Says:

If Seymour’s knee is gonna be a problem all year, I see the need for Hamilton or Cumbie.

But outside of that I dont see them as essential.

Roster spot could be used elsewhere..

Underwood’s ability to play CB & FS along with ST’s makes me lean towards him being a lock.

  11. Marks hair Says:

    5. Im right with your 51.. id take a rb from the cuts. Cumbie v hamilton thursday for the other spot..

  12. Marks hair Says:

Im pretty open to underwood too.. its the last spot. It could change a few times.

    Chris Cooley available.
    Raiders TE position muddled.
Cooley the character type that our GM and HC love.
Only 30 years old, so could have another 2 solid seasons in him.
Broken finger last year, not a long-term type of injury.

  14. lefty12 Says:

Seriously doubt that KK(Streater as #1 possession WR).DHB and Moore will be the starters if Moore can go.However,he will see a lot of action knowing how Moore and Ford can’t stay on the field.

I agree he probably won’t be the Starter, but I think maybe he should be.

  23. Dakota Says:

Reggie Mac must have told Bruce Allen no way he was going to trade for Cooley when people know he is likely to be cut….nice move Reggie.

Now go get him if he is healthy.

  24. Thec Says:

cooley = zmill, and boss…concussion guy

  25. KoolKell Says:

From what I see, Streater would be my first choice on 3rd down. Looks like he and Palmer have a thang going on.

  26. alex7 Says:

Cooley’s knee injury occured in 2010, and the year-long process to heal crossed into 2011, then he broke a finger.

So knee is by now 100%, but Fred Davis is just that good in Washington. Long-term Raider TE will likely be a draft pick in April, or Ausberry if blocking becomes adequate.

  27. DennisAllensVisor Says:

I like the idea of bringing in Cooley.

I dont like the idea of having to cut Myers, Gordon or Ausberry though.

  28. itzSteve Says:

15 players to cut isn’t that hard to come up with:

    Colin Miller
    Conroy Black
    Curtis Taylor
    Hall Davis
    Lucas Nix
    Eddy Carmona
    Chad Kilgore
    Kaelin Burnett
    Nick Howell
    Marquette King
    Kevin Haslam
    Dan Knapp
    Kyle Efaw
    Tory Humphrey
    Derek Carrier
    Brandon Carswell
    Travionte Session

That’s 17 disposable players…and that is still keeping Cumbie, Hamilton, McGee, Lonyae Miller, and Brian McCann if Roscoe doesn’t work out.

Reggie has lots of room to upgrade the roster on cut day.

  29. itzSteve Says:

I’m not saying we should cut Ausberry, but if he had a high-ceiling, he would have been something more than a 7th round pick.

He is a fringe NFL player.

    —-

He was a WR, we converted him.

So in the draft he was being looked at in terms of being a WR.

By that logic Marcel Reece should have been a 3rd round pick as a WR?..

If we do bring in a vet TE and plan on keeping the other three, I believe Schmidt would be out. I don’t see us keeping 4 TE and 2 FB when TE’s can play as a FB in alot of situations.

Hmm, well, I think a lot of people will be disappointed. I don’t think we are a playoff team… yet. We are just paper thin. I love how our defense has played thus far, ranked 4th in the NFL, allowing opposing runners less than 4ypc, holding Megatron to 1 catch for 6 yards, keeping Detroits starters out of the end zone for the first half all very positive things.
I am very concerned about our offensive consistancy though. Palmer has made some less than stellar decisions so far and that worries me, I think if he plays through september the way he did through August he will spend the rest of the season holding Leinarts clip board.
I think we are a better team than last year, but we have a brutal schedule ahead, including the most traveling of any team in the NFL. That will take its toll. I really want to see improvement. If we are a middle of the pack defense, and middle of the pack in penalties, I will call the season a win even if we miss the playoffs.

Pass to the TE adjacent to the defensive right sideline. DVD attempts to knock the TE who is tightroping the sideline, out of bounds. TE swats him like a fly, DVD is knocked on his ass. DVD is a puny gnat.

I hope so. And next in line, Knapp should disappear.

Greg Knapp sux. His play calling stinks.

Watch the end of the first half again. The possession that the Raids got the 54 yd FG. The play call on the pass that Myers dropped is absolute CRAP. Not a chance in the world at gaining any yardage and if it’s caught the clock is running.

Piss poor call from a piss poor coordinator.

Kudos to Taiwan for his vault to get out of bounds and enable the FG attempt.

Don’t want to hear anything more about Knapp being OK bcz the Raids racked up yards. Knapp sucks. His play calling is crap. His offensive style stinks. He’ll run pass routes short of a first down on 3rd all day long.

Just watch the o-line on those plays, they are shifting backwards away from the goal line or getting blown off the goal line, I can’t tell which….that isn’t the RB’s fault, that is just some crap goal line play by the o line…..or bad scheme.

If you can have a hybrid 3-4 4-3 defenses like some teams, why can’t the o-line have a little power blocking set for when the ball is inside the 3 yard line?

I watched the Texans play the Saints for a tad, and on one play from about the 4 yard line, they ran one of those long-winded counter ZBS plays for Foster, and he basically walked into the end zone. Never even had to get into a light jog.

I don’t think it is Knapp as the issue, it is Briesel and Parson getting manhandled.

They already ran the plays earlier in preseason, so why not run the same plays again to see if it works against live competition? See if you can get better at it at least? You can’t un-run a play you already showed the world in your first two preseason games can you?

    RM99,

Not only is Slo-mania going to sweep over the AFC West, but Knapp is going to put up more points this year, than we scored last year.
    ===================================================
Wouldn’t rule that out. But I’ll tell you what – with Palmer at QB instead of Jason Cantball, and a healthy DMAC (keeping fingers crossed) the Raids BETTER score more points.

    I expect nothing less.

Still, Knapp sux. Expect to see more asinine calls like the short pass to Myers that I mentioned earlier. Just indefensible crap. Don’t care if it’s the pre-season. That’s GARBAGE.

Besides, I know you can’t relate to this, (as you’ve said many times you weren’t around for the glory years and just want to finally win now, regardless of style) – but Knapp ball ain’t RAIDER ball.

RAIDER ball should be smashmouth, pound the fool in front of you. Stretch the field VERTICALLY, not horizontally.

Knapp failed here once before and he’s gonna wash out again.

    ==================

I will agree with almost everything you said here. However I think palmer should get more rope than only the month of september. I think the lienart is kyle boller with out the arm strength. If palmer stinks the team will tank and lienart isnt a good enough player to save the season. He wont be able to lead us into the playoffs either. he may be a better fit in this offense, but he clearly isnt nearly as good a player as palmer. If palmer goes out after 7-8 games, turn it over to the young prospect TP. this way by seasons end we will know if we need to draft a qb.

I have said it since last season, new ownership, new front office, new coach and new qb equal a full on rebuild.

McGee needs huge game against Seattle (for what it’s worth he is still listed ahead of criner on depth chart).

DVD, Chekwa, Lee, Underwood,: would not be surprised if Black beats out one of them for a roster spot.

I also expect Nix to make 53-man roster, Raiders to carry 9 OL.

Hamilton could make 53-man roster as well, Reggie could be letting other teams know you are not getting any of our quality DTs for free.

However after spending time taking in lots of pre season football I have seen that simply isnt true. As I type TP is on par with many 1st, 2nd and 3rd year qbs around the leauge in terms of passing the ball.

Some young qbs that are starting are huge question marks and have been just as likely to throw a pick as people have said tp is. jake Locker, christian ponder, brandon weeden, tannehill, gabbert have ranged between lees than spectacular to out right awful during the course of games. i see TP in a similar mode, he is young and will make rookie mistakes. I would argue that pryor has just as much if not more upside than any of these guys. hell he even has better numbers than our starter, so when his time comes give him a long look.

he is no further behind other back ups around the leauge as well. Gusy like seneca wallace tyrod taylor tim tebow, (mark sanchez), colt mccoy and so on.

I think we have been a bit to harsh on the kid, and he is proving the doubters wrong. he is no more likeley to throw a pick than anyone else on this list, I think we have a kid worth committing some real time and coaching to.

Name some since 1990……thats 21 drafts Al had to work with….2 good CBs.

Are you talking about Mike Haynes? That was quite some time ago to give Al credit for being some CB genius.

Very tough to learn, it may be tough for him to gain weight as well. He ought to work on tackling technique and fielding catches.

Parrish couldn’t make the team in SD and they are desperate for receivers. I dont see him as anything more than a temp fill-in until Ford and/or Moore are healthy.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This morning you contradicted me and said that you liked the pickup.

Reality tells us that Parrish played only two games last year ecause of his ankle and hasn’t played that many games over the last 3-4 years.
It also tells us that the dischargers got him through free angency from Buffalo who couldn’t wait to lose him and after a look the dischargers dumped him too.

He can’t cost much though so it doesn’t hurt to look.

What up gents. 234 great analysis about TP totally agree. Knapp has ONE year to have this O flying high with all the talent at his disposal. With Roscoe on board I predict our ST to have AT LEAST 4 tds this year.

We’ve certainly had our share of great Corners.

    Willie Brown, Lester, Haynes, CWood.

Just a great call to take Lester in the 5th and move him to Corner. Al at his best.

Some other goodies. Terry McDaniel for a while. Eric Allen. Doctor Death (RIP). Nnamdi.

Al had good success identifying CB’s that could play ‘bump and run’.

Really hurt the Raids when the NFL legislated against the bump and run. That was a Raider trademark, and once upon a time we had the horses to run it. And run it we did, WAY more than anyone else.

Became a joke later on. But that heavy man-to-man stuff was fun to watch and really worked well at one time.

    Chris Cooley available.
    Raiders TE position muddled.
Cooley the character type that our GM and HC love.
Only 30 years old, so could have another 2 solid seasons in him.
Broken finger last year, not a long-term type of injury.

    =========

Ordinarily, i’d say that ship has sailed, and we had gone through this with Kevin Boss. But Cooley ran a slightly similar deal over in Washington and just might add something. I think organization worried if he’s injury prone and on a guaranteed deal – but TE is non-existent. The upside is we wouldnt have to give anything up to get him. Kahlil Bell might get a look, too.

Not that this has anything to do with his coaching ability – but has anyone noticed that for a skinny guy DA has tits ?

Dude is close to needing a bra.

    Really weird.

    ==============

No, havent noticed it. I think thats a little TOO observant of you as well. Lets just wins some games – he could be a tranny for all i care. Really NOT weird, good coach, hopefully.

Al had his problems drafting guys with speed, but the one thing ive learned studying this team over 37 years is not to ever question Al’s picks on corners.

    +++++++++++++++

Yeah, that Washington guy was good, and so was Philip Buchanan….so glad we took him in front of Ed Reed!

I can think of 1 good CB Al Drafted since 1990 and that was a no-brainer in Woodson….and 1 guy he drafted and converted into a CB and that was Nnamdi….otherwise who are we talking about here?

    ================

He missed on SEVERAL players and Ed Reed, and Ben Roethlisberger were two of the glaring ones. I think the way fate works, the Raiders EASILY would’ve been a different team, had they taken Ben instead of Robert Gallery.

Hind sight is 20/20, but it appeared he front loaded the team with dozens of questionable free agents. That decision to pick up Ronnie Jenkins over Rodney Harrison was abysmal. I mean we could go on and on… Sebastian Janikowski over Shaun Alexander, etc.

I think the Raiders hadn’t been in the top 7 for a long time, and without a GM that was trusted, a lot of picks and badly put together shaky head coaching regimes.
