What I think I learned about our coaches this pre-season:
DA is definitely in charge. Will freely delegate responsibility, but has a hand in everything. Calm and collected on the sideline, but will chew out a staff member if he’s unhappy. Still not entirely sure if he will be philosophically conservative or lean towards risk taking in his game management and tactical decisions. Early indications are he will play it safe.
Greg Knapp is a poor coordinator on several different levels. He will design an offense that he’s comfortable with, rather than design an offense best suited to his roster’s talent. He is a lousy play caller that will squander opportunities by coming up short on makeable conversions, and wasting clock when time needs to be conserved. Conservative pansy that will not fully exploit the explosive arsenal at his disposal. The Nation will be clamoring for his dismissal before it’s all said and done.
Jason Tarver could be the real deal. Might have tipped his hand a bit early by having the Raids showing too many packages too early. It’s possible the D has looked better than it actually is due to this factor. It’s also possible we haven’t seen most of what the ‘mad scientist’ has in store for 2012. Either way, appears to have the squad playing more cohesively and disciplined than we’ve seen in ages. Schematically, light years more advanced than his predecessor. Ahead of schedule, and could prove to be the best offseason hire.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention, DA has nice breasts.

i think knapp’s offense has played it pretty vanilla. reece hasn’t even mad an appearance. moore and ford and dhb have barely done a thing. dmc has been under wraps. i think there will be much more coming. this offense will score.
the defense needed to flex a little to work on things. new players doing new things. needed confidence too.
i think the raiders will blow people’s minds this year.

In the past, if you used unacceptable language or even the Prez’s name, you would get the ‘waiting for moderation’ message and your post would never show.
It appears that now, use of certain words will cause your posts to just go to the twilight zone without any indication that it is being filtered out.

Ford missing time will be a blessing in disguise. This will give Streater more reps directly, not that he wasn’t earning more reps on his own. Streater will be a more reliable target to move the chains.
Our playmakers like DMac, DHB and DMoore just need a few chances and they will more than likely breakout for a score on one of them. We just need everybody else to do their jobs on the smaller plays, get first downs and give those playmakers another shot to make the big play.

In the case of my ‘twilight zone’ post, I used two ‘P’ words that I removed before the comment would actually post. Not sure which of them, (perhaps it was both) triggered the filtering software.
The first ‘P’ word was the colorful term for urine. I said Knapp is a urine poor coordinator. I don’t think this got the filter fired up, but I’m not sure.
I also called Knapp another ‘P’ word, which I ammended to pansy. In the future, I will call him a sperm receptacle to avoid upsetting the software.

I believe Boss was let go because of his concussion history. IMO, his salary was not out of line for a good TE. It’s too bad Hue Jackson never used the TE for his offense. it was like having an empty gun. I really liked Boss & thought he could have made a great contribution especially in the red zone. Meyers is OK but I think we could do better.

Myers blocking looks good but we need a dual threat like Cooley given our offensive scheme tendency. I read that Bruce Allen stated back on July 30 the skins were working on a trade with the Raiders and the beatwriters figured it was Cooley then….he had a 4 million dollar contract then…we can prolly sign him now for a couple mill and obviously we don’t have to trade nothing. Get it done!!

We need to scrap the ZBS at the goal line…anyone else agree with this?
*********************
I’d like to drop the ZBS entirely. We’ve already been there and done that. Didn’t work well then either. We need beef in the middle. Both Brisel & Carlisle are lightweights (better suited for ZBS) for the guard position. Both are less than 300#.
****************
Possibly swap out Carlisle & Brisel for Bergstrom & Nix (313# & 317# respectively). Then trade Brisel for a #2 pick to some other team running ZBS.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:23 pm
I think Cooley has a great, team-first attitude too.

Whut up Dan? Watching any games tonight?
August 29th, 2012 at 3:26 pm
And maybe some ambien…
August 29th, 2012 at 3:26 pm
I don’t like the ZBS either…..because I don’t think it is the best system for McFadden, but I guess we shall see. The first time we ran it, we didn’t have a QB that could keep the defense honest, so maybe McFadden will still be great in the ZBS now that we have Palmer, and I also think this o-line is better than the previous one when we tried the ZBS.
I have always wanted a GM that would be on the same page as his HC in terms of the system, and allow his coach to hire his assistants, so here it is…..but it did make me sad that Allen went with Knapp and the ZBS.
But at least Reggie will get the players that fit the system, and will not force coaches to run systems they don’t like or obtain players that do not fit the system. As long as there is a 100% commitment to running whatever system they choose the right way, then I guess we just have to see how it turns out.
I would much rather have it this way than with a GM who hires a 3-4 DC then doesn’t give him 3-4 players and then forces him to switch back to a 4-3 and then picks up corners to play man to man when they are better facing the QB in zone etc. Go for it Reggie!

August 29th, 2012 at 3:28 pm
Agree Dakota! Do you think they could make the concession of a power scheme at the goal line…we’ve seen all preseason how well ZBS works on the 1 yard line!
August 29th, 2012 at 3:28 pm
I need to come up with a name for Dennis Allen that expresses my appreciation for his rookie head coach status as well as his pubescent, girlish, developing breasts.
Henceforth, I will call him the training bra.
I’m curious to see how much time the training bra will have the starters go on Thursday night.
Anything more than one series on offense will surprise me.
In fact, if I were the training bra, DMAC wouldn’t even see the field.

Unfortunately you are correct. But, nothing y we can’t run a Power Blocking scheme on the goal-line stands. I’d set up our line as follows (L-R):
Gordon-Veldheer-Bergstrom-Wiz-Nix-Barksdale-Barnes with Schmidt at FB & Miller at RB. That should be good for at least 2 yards every time.

correction–he is CAPABLE of being a physical guy. unfortunately he sits back and watches far too much. he seriously gives poor effort and just kinda runs into or tries to duck around blockers a lot. he COULD do it but i just don’t have faith in him. he’s not mentally strong. too much of a hood rat i think.

I agree with this idea. no reason you can’t switch it up near the goal line. Teams have 3-4 packages, and 4 WR sets, and the Wildcat etc….no reason you can’t have a goal line package that gets the job done.
Hopefully, it is just a matter of getting Wiz back in the lineup, but if not, something will have to be done.

August 29th, 2012 at 3:37 pm
but wheeler has looked tremendous and burris seems to be catching up to the speed of the game and i love his aggressiveness. curry would be a possible improvement over mcclain but he’s not all that instinctive. the other guys, goethel (a tad slow), stupar (rookie on the bubble), ihenacho (more of a pass rusher), and kilgore/burnett (bubble guys) aren’t probably the answer either.
i do hope i’m wrong about mcclain (but i’m almost never wrong)
August 29th, 2012 at 3:37 pm
Allen seems to be the kind or coach which can change things up to suit strengths/weaknesses….did it in Denver to perfection and if you say he didn’t actually do it himself at least he saw first hand that it works. Denver last year was the appitome of playing the hand you’re delt. I have faith.

I don’t know if I’d want to risk DMac from getting hurt in the big goal-line pile-ups. There’s a lot of nasty schit that goes on in the scrum. If the goal is to score & we can use a Miller for running with the monster elephant line-up and accomplish the goal without risking DMac, that would be my choice.

I actually enjoy these pre-season games. Enjoy scoping the rookies and trying to evaluate the teams.
Ordinarily, I’d be watching this matchup hoping to see the Giants snap one of Brady’s legs and knock him out for the year. Not much of a chance for that since he’ll only get a series or maybe not even play.

The pitch to McFadden is almost automatic. He’s too fast. He may have to run 20 yards in a straight line to gain 3 for the TD but….Everytime they’ve done it, it’s worked.

there have been tons of guys who were successful in the SEC and weren’t in the nfl. just watch him. he sits back and watches. slow to react. when he does take off, lots of times he runs past the play or just takes on a blocker. i just don’t think he cares all that much. i hope i’m wrong, but so far in career, he has not done enough for me. he is an enigma b/c he does make plays at times. and his tackle total went up last year. if he gets to about 120 tackles this season, he will be on his way. i still have hope, but less than i did at one time.

I’m convinced that the coaches have been addressing the players weaknesses, DMAC up the middle for example, teams won’t know what to expect for a good deal of time.
August 29th, 2012 at 4:00 pm
Slowlando is an adequate blitzer, is better in coverage than people think.
Slowlando, however is not very good at plugging the run. Can count the times he’s filled a hole and tackled a RB for little or no gain on one hand.
Don’t know what the problem is, but I suspect it’s a lack of lateral foot speed and pursuit, way more than a recognition deficiency.
Don’t know about you, but I expect my MLB’s strength to be STOPPING THE RUN. Blitzing prowess and coverage ability are important, but secondary to STOPPING THE RUN.
Slowlando has been a huge disappointment in this area, and I don’t buy the ‘DT’s aren’t keeping him clean’ explanation for his shortcomings against the run at all.
I’ll be ecstatic if the jogging, whiffing, felonious funeral fool substantially improves, but I’m not holding my breath.

I just want to say that I hope the replacement refs stay all season long. They aren’t trained to throw penalties against us just because. The replacement refs are just calling it as they see it without being bias toward us.Its a breath of fresh air to be treated fair.Watch and see when and if the old regular refs return,it will all of a sudden turn back to throwing penalties against us just because.
