Report: Raiders sign young cornerback

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, August 29th, 2012 at 1:13 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders claimed cornerback Coye Francies off waivers, less than a day after he was waived by the Seattle Seahawks. Francies is listed as being a member of the Raiders on NFL.com, though the Raiders have yet to announce the transaction.
Francies, 25, appeared in eight games for the Cleveland Browns in 2009 and 2010. He finished the 2011 season on the Seahawks practice squad. The Seahawks waived Francies as part of their getting down to the league-mandated 75 players Monday.
Francies, 6-foot and 185 pounds, played at San Jose State. He is expected to compete for a backup spot and playing time on special teams.
He doesn’t have long to make a favorable impression. The Raiders are off Wednesday and play the Seahawks in their exhibition finale Thursday night.
Final roster cuts are Friday.

Just a sign of how poor our “young” cornerbacks have played.

  6. RaiderRockstar Says:

in all likelihood, Coye Francies will be a Raider for about 3 days.

Maybe he can get some autographs from Raider legends while he’s in town?

  7. RaiderRockstar Says:

    2009 NFL Draft

Francies entered the combine a projected second- or third-round pick according to NFL scouts, but after slow 40-yard dash times he was projected to slide to the fourth or fifth round

he ran a 4.63 forty at the NFL Combine

the ghost of Al Davis is furious right now!

  8. RaiderRockstar Says:

at the end of the day, I still think that these are the six corners who crack the 53 man roster for Oakland:

    Bartell
    Spencer
    Chekwa
    Van Dyke
    Lee
    McCann

McCann & Lee mainly due to special teams ability. Reggie is still trying to DEVELOP the 2 CB’s drafted by Al Davis last year

  9. Raider Riff Says:

So who have we cut to make room for this dude and Parrish?

  12. Just Fire Baby Says:

Man, no practice reps and one preseason game doesn’t seem to give the kid ANY chance to make the team.

I wonder if they want to bring him in, with the intent to coach him up a little before they cut him, just in case they need to bring him back at some time during the year.

  13. Klas Tjorborn Says:

I think above all, The Gut and The Visor LOVE pressuring their players. They LOVE creating competition and reminding guys that their are no scholarships in the NFL anymore.

Do I think Ford will be traded? No freakin way. But do I think they want to send him and Moore a message? Yes. Start taking better care of yourselves. We aint waiting for anyone. The Raider train is moving along whether youre healthy or not, you better get on board.

I dont think this philosophy will ever change as long as the current regime is in place.

I won the best draft award in Dells WF FF league.
    Not bad for picking 11th

  18. Plunketthead Says:

I took a lot of heat for that draft. I screwed up twice and panicked/screwedup once. The panic produced Nate Burleson.

  19. Plunketthead Says:

But my screw ups and panic had some thought to it. Megatron is on the cover of Madden. He will be lucky to play 6 games this year so Nate will step up.

And michael Bush will score more TDs then Forte in a league that pays 25 points per ten yards instead of the usual 10 points.

Gonna be hard for RBs to amass FF points this year

Mark Davis has the worst hair in pro sports. But he seems like a damn cool owner. Im not happy Al is gone, but Im happy he replaced Al.

Amy Trask is known by two nicknames in NFL GM circles, “The Pitbull” and the “Princess of Darkness”. You know which one I like more.

Reggie will always be “The Gut” to me.

Every good dictator needs a decoy. Insert Raleigh.

Dennis Allen is “The Visor”. It’s his staple.

And the players have already coined Tarver as “The Mad Scientist”. For his college degree and his creative blitz schemes.

Like I said, Ive never been so happy in my lifetime about our org’s staff except for in the Gruden era where we had Al, Amy, Bruce Allen, Herrera chocking out Kawaksaiakskami, and Chucky. Im inclined to believe that our current cast of characters is better. The proof will be in the pudding though.

Two signings already and it’s only the first cut of players. That bodes for some major activity after the 53 man cut. Parish and Francies could be playing a few days as camp bodies for the 4th game and then tossed aside for better talents off the wire. I hope Reggie’s on the phone discussing late round deals to get ahead of the waivers process. We won’t be the only busy teams.

  59. guest123 Says:

Cooley is not half the TE he used to be. Has a great attitude and would be a fan favorite if he came. But he’s been overpaid for some time now and is broken down and his next contract will be a fraction of what he was making. You’d have to ask what is his motivation to earn a vet minimum paycheck and his body hurting more than ever with every hit. It’s like Allen said, there is only so many hits in each player.

Francies was a 2nd round prospect in ‘09 that had off off field and anger issues. Could be a better prospect than Chekwa or DVD, who knows.

Not saying we need to give him a contract…just need to see where he’s at health-wise and how he fits into our group dynamic. The guy is an accomplished veteran TE and we need that around to help develop our younger prospects and I would say his production is still superior to our alternatives. Sign him for a 1.5 million one year contract if he looks good in workout and passes physical. From what I understand he’s a good character guy who has to have a chip on his shoulder after getting cut.

No it isn’t. He was the DC in stanford last year, and prior to that he was a positions coach with the 49ers for a number of years! Dennis Allen was a positions coach before becoming a DC for 1 year last year with Denver before getting his gig. Trust me, when Tarver turns this historically bad defense into a middle of the pack or better unit withOUT the benefit of draft picks or cap money, he is going to get some HC offers. IF he gets this defense into the top 10, he will get HC offers NEXT YEAR.

Cooley would be a very strong signing. Pay him vet min, with incentives for PT and production that could add say another 1.5 mill and I think he will take it. 87. guest123 Says:

I’m not going to attempt to knock Tarver. I hope he turns out to be all you claim him to be. I hope he turns this defense into a top 10 as well. But he took a last place defense into a late middle of the pack defense, and he did it with 3 studs on defense who were recovering (some of which) from injuries the year prior. We don’t have the standout defensive studs that Denver has. If Tarver can take this defense to top 20 status this year, then color me impressed.

  88. bcz24 Says:

Hey, it is totally understandable that we are predicted to be a sub-500 team. Our starting offense has been pretty bad thus far, combined with our schedule… I said it yesterday, I think we will be a better team than last year, but we will have a worse record. Just preparing myself for that.

I think it’s wishful thinking to squeeze any more production out of Cooley. I doubt he’d even pass the physical. He’s had his share of hits and there’s a reason he was cut outright and I don’t think it was just the money. There are going to be better rent-a-TE’s available after the 53 man cutdown day. I looked at NFL.Com. They have us at 3rd overall on D, 4th aginst the Run, 5th against the pass. I know its preseason guys but, have we ever been that high up?

    ——————-
Regardless of the game tomorrow, the D will play well this year, 10-6 and we take the division!!

Don’t trust preseason stats. They lie.

Well NFLN was making a big deal about Palmer leading the league in int’s for the preseason..and replayed EVERY int. he threw last yr. Even the ones he threw against KC in that 1st game when he was totally thrown in there in a rushed panic move and not ready at all.

  96. Carl Weathers Says:

For what it’s worth, just heard on Sirius a clip of Cooleys presser yesterday. He says he’s gonna take some time to decide where he goes next but feels he can still start and is healthy.

  98. guest123 Says:

I know the national media provides updates on player and they all write, “Carson Palmer struggling”. Talking a lot about his 2 picks and no TD’s. One of which was bad luck ball bouncing off his receiver and the other was an uncalled holding of Taiwan Jones.

The National Media is clueless and only reads boxscores to support their trite little blurbs.

  99. DJ Johnny Says:

I think it’s wishful thinking to squeeze any more production out of Cooley. I doubt he’d even pass the physical. He’s had his share of hits and there’s a reason he was cut outright and I don’t think it was just the money. There are going to be better rent-a-TE’s available after the 53 man cutdown day. Just be patient.
    *********************
Every training camp tour that went to Washington said Cooley is healthy and in great shape. Your oppinion is just wrong. He was cut for no other reason than his 4 million salary when they had decided Fred Davis was starting. In fact, most people believe he will resign with Washington before week 1 on a less expensive deal.

  104. Carl Weathers Says:

    Torcher???? Torture*^

  105. guest123 Says:

Well we need a tight end badly. Can’t imagine going into the season with those 3. If we don’t get better play from our tight ends, look for more 5 yard throws on 3rd and 8 in the flat hoping our WR’s can make the sticks. The TE’s don’t deserve much attention from the LB’s so they don’t get any.

I’ve been pining for Schiancoe all off-season. He was available for less than $2M for a short while after Reggie cleared a ton of cap space with Branch’s contract. But Reggie I guess didn’t really want him. His call.

  116. Bob Marley Says:

Schemes will make a huge difference on Defense.

Last year the NYJ blocked us from interviewing Dennis Thurman, a Hue Jackson buddy, for the DC job and we ended up handing it to the fallback option Chuck B, who had been out of the NFL for 3 years, think about it, 3 years out of the League, no wonder we sank to all-time lows, huge mistake by Al and Hue.

Now we have a Defensive Head Coach who is in tune with the latest trends and tendencies around the league, he has worked for some of the best DC’s of the past decade in Gregg Williams and John Fox.

Then there is Tarver, a bright young Coach who can implement DA’s vision on Defense because, make no mistake about it, this will be DA’s Defense run by Tarver.

Having a top 10, maybe top 5 DL unit in place, a couple of LB’s ready to break out in McClain and Wheeler and a deep, versatile Safety group gives them players to work with, if the CB’s hold up there’s no reason not to expect a big turnaround from the Defense, specially with the bar set so low after last year.

  117. Thec Says:

  121. Thec Says:

    *******

I agree about the turnaround. Particularly in the discipline and focus. Penalties should dip. More consistency from play to play and quarter to quarter. But the bar is set really low compared to last year. If we hike up 10 spaces in overall defense compared to the rest of the league, I’ll be very happy about that.

    Marley,

I agree with the so-called experts negatives to some degree. We have our share of warts right now, and if you just rely on a snapshot it’s not an accurate picture. This thing is moving, dynamic in nature. Tarver and Allen are molding it and shaping it to be something very different from what we see now. So it’s not inaccurate to paint a negative outlook to it. If all you can see is the present, then you don’t see the master plan that coaches are developing.

It was fairly obvious that we had improved but not upper echelon and we proved that by losing both sides of the by to teams we should have whipped. Three weeks later and the media had us ranked as high as we had been in ten years.

Palmer has 4 Ints so far, lets break them down –
Week 1 – slightly overthrown deep ball to Ford, questionable decision, but he was just trying to take a shot. No sweat, he doesn’t make that throw in a regular game
Week 2 – Badly overthrown ball against AZ. He floated it, could be a fluke, but I have seen a few of these this preseason that he got away with, needs to work on the mechanics to prevent these types of throws.
Week 3 int 1- Horrible decision by Palmer to throw into that scrum. No idea who it was supposed to go to but there wasn’t an eligible guy there, nice play by a dlineman to snag it out of the air though.
INT 2- Shouldn’t even be considered an INT. Eddie McGee practically handed it to the defender, no bearing on Palmer in my opinion, especially since I dont expect McGee to even make the team

  158. bcz24 Says:

How come when Palmer throws 4 Ints in the preseason its armageddon, the guy is trash, but Peyton Manning throws 3 ints and its wink wink nudge nudge, you know, its just preseason. Manning has thrown the same amount of INTs over the last 2 years (that he played) as Palmer. Not comparing Palmer to Manning but come on, the Ints are problem for Palmer, but ok when Manning does it?

Absolutely, and to annoint TP the starter after a half against 2nd and 3rd team players is crazy. I also think we are keeping the best plays in the book locked up until Monday night against SD. Still a little concerned about goaline offense though. Hope the O line gels with Wiz out.

  160. guest123 Says:

The problem is preseason football is not NFL football. It’s a bunch of football players having a cookout and a few beers and playing a pick up game in someone’s backyard. Sure, the offense is vanilla, but so are the defenses. No one is out trying to kill anyone, starters and backups and future camp casualties are all playing and sometimes together. The brand of football in presesaon games is just below the Pro Bowl.

Consider Daunte Culpepper circa 2005. In the preseason games, his completion percentage was 82% with an 11.8 YPA. People were predicting big things for him even more than there were the year before. Let’s just say that didn’t end well.

Preseason football is an exhibition game. Sure, the undrafted free agents and guys clinging to a dream of playing in the NFL are playing hard . . . but those guys aren’t top tier talent to begin with.

What is the over under on Kiffin returning to NFL? I say 3 years.

  181. aig-raiders Says:

    From Vic Tafur on Cumbie…

Raiders defensive tackle Jamie Cumbie didn’t give himself enough credit for his potentially bubble-popping performance Saturday night. Cumbie, an undrafted free agent who was on Oakland’s practice squad last season, had three pass deflections and a sack against the Lions.

“I’m 6-foot-7,” he said, “so my hands are higher than everyone else’s already. I got them up and it happened.”

He left out the part about getting kicked off the Clemson team two years ago, getting a job landscaping while he worked with a trainer for five months and then coming to Oakland for training camp last year with a one-way ticket, broke.

“Nothing, man” he said. “I had nothing. No clothes, no money, nothing. Lucky I got a chance to stay around last year, and I have gotten better.”

Another good outing Thursday in the preseason finale in Seattle and Cumbie has a good shot at getting off the bubble and making the 53-man roster.

“My dad tells me, ‘Son, I feel that sometimes it will come in landslides, when it comes.’ And I’ve been waiting, working hard,” Cumbie said. “It’s about time I got something.”

Cumbie’s hands started him on his journey to oblivion.

He was kicked off the Clemson team, then kicked out of the university in June 2010 after a fight behind a bar and an arrest for assault and battery. The arrest warrant stated the victim had a broken nose, swelling of the brain and multiple facial fractures, but Cumbie swears it was “just one good punch.”

“I was wrong, shouldn’t have been in that situation, but basically I hit the wrong kid,” Cumbie said. “People – even from my hometown – say I tried to kill him, but I know what I did. It came down to who I hit.”

The victim, Philip Prince II, is the grandson of former Clemson President and trustee Philip Prince.

“I regret it,” Cumbie said, “but they say everything happens for a reason.”

Kicked out of school one class shy of graduation and unable to land at another school, Cumbie “was crushed.” He moved to Columbia, S.C., where his new agent, Jay Courie, got him a personal trainer and a job cutting grass.

“I knew if I had worked hard, that I had a chance,” Cumbie said. “Maybe not to get drafted but at least to get a tryout with a pro team.”

Last summer, the call came. It was from the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL.

“Man, I was happy,” Cumbie said.

Then, the day the NFL lockout ended, a better call came. It was from then-Raiders defensive line coach Mike Waufle, inviting Cumbie to training camp.

Cumbie was cut but signed to the practice squad out of camp, and he hung on every word from players like Richard Seymour and Tommy Kelly.

“Seymour and Kelly and Big John (Henderson) were always giving me advice last year, pointing me here, pointing me there,” Cumbie said. “They don’t have to do that. They must have seen something in me.”

Cumbie put on 15 pounds in the past year and is up to 305.

“I’m more confident, stronger, I know my offensive sets and tendencies, and I’m seeing the game a lot better,” he said. Even with all that, Cumbie knew he needed a big performance against the Lions after missing the second preseason game with a foot injury.

And he did, much to the delight of defensive coordinator Jason Tarver.

“Those are the guys you root for because he said, ‘Coach, I’m going to be back’ after the injury, Tarver said. “And Jamie plays hard every snap, and he comes back and makes a bunch of plays.”

  193. r8eray Says:

The most intriguing player on the field in any of the final preseason games of the summer is probably Terrelle Pryor.

The second-year Oakland quarterback thrust himself into the spotlight with a dazzling performance against the Detroit Lions in the second half of an Oakland Raiders’ win. After a shaky training camp and a poor showing in the first two preseason games, Pryor was phenomenal against the Lions.

He had a 59-yard run and a 17-yard touchdown run. But most importantly, he had passing success. He was 3-of-5 passing for 137 yards and with two touchdown passes to rookie Juron Criner.

Pryor will likely play extensively Thursday night at the Seattle Seahawks. I want to see him continue to throw the ball well as we all know he can run.

The difference between Pryor having a legitimate chance to be a starting quarterback some day or just being a fast, athletic preseason novelty will be his passing game. His biggest problem throwing the ball has been consistency. If he can deliver a second straight good preseason showing, the Raiders — who will likely figure out some packages to feature Pryor occasionally in the regular season — could feel good about Pryor as a potential starter down the road.

With starter Carson Palmer turning 33 in December and showing signs of decline the past four years, Oakland may start thinking about grooming a potential starter soon. If it doesn’t have faith in Pryor, the Raiders see th drafting a quarterback early next year.

Pryor is going to be the No. 3 quarterback this season, but Thursday is his chance to let the team know he should be their first option in the future.

The SeaGulls have been playing their real playbook all preseason in an effort to see what they really have at QB.

Us, like the rest of the NFL have been doing vanilla stuff. On offense and D. We get nothing out of this final dress rehersal other than risk injury to our known commodities. The SeaGulls are going to be coming at us full tilt. Even the Lions were playing vanilla and the 3rd game is the closest thing to a scrimmage.

Get Pryor in the shotgun with DMC and Reece next to him in the backfield and he can hand off to either back or fake it and run it in for a TD himself!

Terelle Pryor did exactly what I said he would do on this blog: he had his first plays set up for him to take off running. The defense was completely unprepared for that and was in a man under. The second the defense has to account for Pryor running, which they did, the passing lanes opened up. Good strategy. Problem is teams probably are already figuring some of this out.

    ———-

Im with Hair on this one. I for one, hate special packages. It throws off the rhythm of a game and takes up too much practice as said above.

Houdini needs to learn to be a QB. He’s special enough on his own without any gimmick offense.

That’s why he needs as many reps at regular QB within our offense as possible. If it means making him the #2 then so be it. Im highly interested in seeing how much better he can be with more reps and practice. Burying him on the depth chart is not going to do us any good.

I like that Knapp has noticed the kids skills though. Houdini just needs to keep doing exactly what he is doing and eventually they wont be able to ignore the obvious.

Caron will continue to tutor the kid. And Leinart can continue to be a career backup, first for Carson and later for Houdini. Job insurance for the next 10 years if he wants it.

    JHill,

I agree that technically, every player on the 53-man roster is ready to play. But think about 3rd string QBs. Think about how bad most BACKUP QBs are. Imagine how bad you must be at QB to be a 3rd stringer.

Yes, in the right place/time, Pryor can wow you with his athleticism. Over the course of a game though, where he would be forced to read coverages, throw into tight windows, read blitzes, use proper footwork…

he would fail miserably because he’s simply not very good at most of those things. Proven at college and NFL, so anything else is honestly just wishful thinking.

  337. Just Fire Baby Says:

On screen passes, you can do everything other than tackle the potential screen reciever (sometimes you get away with actually tackling him) and get away with it.

The Myers hate is ridiculous, lol.

Do you know what a TE is supposed to do MOST of the time he is on the field?????

I know the new flavor of the month is a TE who more rembles a WR. In THIS offense, I’ll take a “true” TE, thank you very much.

I dont hate Oscar Meyers brand, it is better than bars s from what I am told.

Carson’s throw in traffic that was intercepted last game was a middle screen in which the RB was flagrantly held. could have been a big play but the non-call resulted in the INT

Myers has made more plays in the passing game and ST’s, other than 2 or 3 TE’s we’ve had, since Todd Christenen era. In limited time no less! Those 2 or 3 are Ethan Horton, Miller and possibly one other I can’t recall.

    ^^^^^^^
Exactly. 1st and Goal and even just fake the hand off to DMC and run it to the 1 yard line himself or get into the end zone or he can pass it to Myers.

Plus it provides the offense with a different red zone look to keep defenses guessing.

It all depends on the blocking also.

As for J Hill being called out here, why isnt he allowed to change his mind? I know Ive done not quite a 180 on Pryor but dang close.

I just want to see how much better he can get with more coaching and reps. He has charisma, he looks like a leader, and he has the work ethic a QB has to have.

Good point whoever said that if we were going to dump him, it would have already happened. His work ethic is keeping him around. And it will continue to keep him around. A QB with a chip on his shoulder usually ends up being pretty dang good.

There’s a lot of problems with Pryor’s mechanics. Frankly, they are terrible. Look at the lst TD pass he threw in the last game. His footwork is horrendous, he kind of wings it up there, and in all honesty it is a bad pass. Criner bails him out on that play. Good read by Pryor, but not overly good execution. Another critique of Leinart was he was immature coming into the league and didn’t take his job seriously. He even admitted he didn’t dedicate himself enough.Supposedly the last couple of years he has seen the light and realized he has to work to be good in this league. How can people judge him on things he did 3/4 years ago yet in the same breath say Pryor will change in 3/4 years? It is called maturing.
    ==============
    You are right.
He did cop to the fact he enjoyed partying.
Unfortunately him maturing hasn’t shown up in his play.
Well, except for a few solid plays in preseason, which, by your own words, don’t mean a single dang thing.

He wasn’t released from Houston at all, his contract expired, and he followed Knapp here, as Houston is set with Schaub and very happy with Yates who won a playoff game for them. ***********
Miller was not offered a take it or leave it deal, he wasn’t offered anything, we couldn’t match the offer Seattle made, and clearly we weren’t ok with Meyers as our starter because we signed Boss to replace Miller. Boss spent the better portion of last year injured, and under utilized, so we got rid of his $4 mill cap # and the whole plan was to see what Ausberry and Gordon could contribute. They were the intended starters, with Meyers playing the veteran depth… neither could seize the position Meyers is starting by default.

Why are Raiders “settling” on Myers when it’s clear to almost everybody he is average/below average at a position that the OC has said is absloutely VITAL to the success of his offense?

Especially when Reg is still sitting on 7 mill.
    =======================================

They knew they could not upgrade every necessary position this lst year. Clearly this is a “building” process. I think the org wanted to take a look at Myers, Ausberry and Gordon before they did anything. The surprise really has been Gordon. He has shown better hands than any of us thought.

Guys talking about Leinart being pretty good this preseason but we really haven’t seen much of him at all.

I could be wrong, but it was a pretty deep gash. I’m not sure if it needed stitches or not. Either way having to take snaps with that hand could be tricky if it wasn’t healed enough.

It was his decision making process. His throwing into double coverage.
Again, why have all the teams let him go?
    Because he bombed, idiot.
    ****************
All the teams? He was released from Arizona for his work ethic and character at the time. He wasn’t released from Houston at all, his contract expired, and he followed Knapp here, as Houston is set with Schaub and very happy with Yates who won a playoff game for them. Before you start calling people idiots at least site facts. Leinart didn’t ‘bomb’ in Houston. He was injured, you do realize that happens in a contact sport right.
    =================
Also recall him getting bichslapped by us, and his ugly horrible play got him benched.
    Guess you forgot that.
And his contract expired, and wasn’t resigned.
    To you that’s a plus?
No, means they didn’t want him back.

i think it’s clear parrish and francies were picked up to return kicks. with ford and moore out, no one has stepped up. i’m surprised they don’t go with mccann b/c he has had success there but maybe they don’t plan on keeping him after all.

parrish has been a good punt returner and both he and DA have stated bluntly that punt returning is why he’s here.

francies returned 3 kicks for 66 yards for seattle so i guess that is enough for him to get a serious look there tomorrow. not sure why he would be better than mccann though.

Whats important to keep in mind is that palmer is a hold over from the last regime, and in know way is guaranteed to stick through the rebuild. Just like new owners want their own gm, the new gm wants his own coach, and the coach wants his own qb. we have seen this play out before here in Oakland. palmers recent struggles are not lost on the front office and coaches even if they say all of the right things to dismiss them in public. palmer will get the benefit of he doubt being a pro of 10 years, but he must perform well or may not make it to the end of the year as the starter. he will need to prove to the new brain trust that he is the answer moving forward. so far he is doing the opposite.

terrel pryor is also a guy that elicits a strong response simply with the mention of his name. he is either a tebow clone that will never make it as an nfl qb, and a tight end waiting to happen, or a unique once in a life time talent with limitless upside. pryor also wasnt a part of the new regimes draft or signings. he too must prove that he belongs.

How will this play out? Id say look to last years broncos for clues. new coach comes in with orton who was a hold over. orton played ok but the team lost its first 4-5 games. the crowd wanted to see what tebow could do the coaches did as well and the rest was history.

elway fox orton tebow, are akin to big mck da palmer and pryor in this scenario. If palmer does not play well enough to lead the team to wins early in th season he may get the same treatment orton suffered, in favor of the raw rookie qb with the difficult to gauge ceiling.

After all D.A was there when the tebow show caught fire and im sure after seeing tebow up close and personal he is best suited to make any comparisons between pryor and the a fore mentioned.

There are how ever two things that pryor has that give him an edge. Pryor is a better passer than tebow at this stage of his career, stronger arm, better mechanics ( not saying much here), more accurate. pryor is far better athlete, tebow is more of a power runner, pryor has that but also speed to burn. the biggest thisng hge has going for him however is the raiders are the fastest team in football. the wr’s and rbs are speed demons and coupled with pryor will give him much more to work with than tebow ever had in dungver.

This could get really interesting really fast, because if palmer flops the calls for pryor will begin, and D.A and big mck may just listen.

Actually, we don’t. See, that was the problem with Pryor having a decent few plays against scrubs. Certain fans are going to call for benching Palmer and putting in Pryor. That would be asinine on a ton of levels. There is NO WAY Pryor is ready for prime time. Sorry. The best thing for Pryor and the franchise is for them to Aaron Rodgers him and let him sit for three years and watch.

  480. raiderzmaverick Says:

I will make a bold statement here – the defense will be better than our offense this year.

It should NOT be so. WE have more new starters on defense, and not as good of players overall.

But it will – and I will tell you why.

You listen to the head coach and DC talk about the defensive players and they talk about watching what they do and working out schemes to maximize on their best talents. They creatively adjust their schemes to make the most out of the players they have.

The OC talks about trying to get the players to fit into his scheme. The offense then isn’t made to fit what the players do best. So they’ll be uncomfortable, look bad, timing will be off etc. like the defense was last year. Our running game might not be so bad, but our passing game will look out of sync. And then everybody will blame our WRs or blame palmer. It’s nothing new for Knapp though – he just can’t think with encorporating an offense to fit the strengths of the players. It was something good Hue did (maybe one of the few good things).

So, suddenly our defense will be greatly improved and we’ll be pulling our hair out about the offense. Not like it’ll drop to the very bottom of the league. But drives will stall, points harder to come by etc. And we’ll be like – “damned if we could include last year’s offense (even with all the starters injured most of the year) with this year’s defense we’d be super bowl contenders.”

backup qb not only can’t stay off of IR, but when he’s on the field, he’s mediocre at best.
