Four recently UDAs make roster; Curry left on PUP
By Steve Corkran
Friday, August 31st, 2012 at 9:17 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders pared 22 players from their roster Friday night in the final mandatory cutdown. One gets the sense that general manager Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen are far from finished shaping the roster in advance of the regular-season opener.
As expected, the Raiders kept veteran outside linebacker Aaron Curry on the physically unable to perform list as a result of his sore knees. Beyond that, there wasn’t any real surprise among the moves.
Perhaps more surprising, the Raiders kept cornerback Coye Francies, who was signed Wednesday, and ended up with four recently undrafted free agents making the team – wide receiver Rod Streater, guard Lucas Nix, defensive tackle Jamie Cumbie (2011) and linebacker Carl Ihenacho (2010).
Curry is ineligible to practice or play in any regular-season games for the first six weeks of the season. He can be activated during a 21-day window beyond the first six weeks.
Curry has not practiced for more than two months. Allen was hopeful that Curry’s knees would respond to treatments from a specialist in Southern California. To no avail.
As a result, rookie Miles Burris is slated to being the season in Curry’s place as the starting weak-side linebacker.
The Raiders are off Saturday and Sunday. McKenzie and Allen no doubt will be spending an inordinate amount of time scouring the waiver wire.
“Whatever moves we feel like give us a chance to be better, we’re going to make those moves,” Allen said in a conference call about 90 minutes before the Raiders submitted their moves. “We’re evaluating any and all positions to see if there’s someone out there that can help us.”
Based on the way the Raiders reserves played Thursday night in the team’s exhibition finale, it’s likely the Raiders can find a few upgrades from the more than 1,000 players purged from rosters leaguewide this week.
Few of Oakland’s projected starters played beyond the opening offensive and defensive series. Hence, the projected backups and roster hopefuls got plenty of playing time.
Allen wasn’t thrilled by much of what he saw, he said.
“That’s been a concern, the depth on our roster,” Allen said. “It just reconfirmed that we have to upgrade the bottom half of the roster because depth is a concern.”
Linebacker Nathan Stupar is the only member of Oakland’s 2012 draft class that didn’t make the 53-man roster despite shining against the Seahawks on Thursday night, Allen said.
“It’s been a little bit of an up-and-down deal with Nate,” Allen said before cuts were announced, “but he came out (Thursday) and played and acted like he wanted to try to get a spot on this roster.”
Apparently, it was a case of too little, too late for Stupar. Now, he has to hope he clears waivers and the Raiders decide to sign him to their practice squad.
Teams are permitted to sign as many as eight players to their practice squad once the waiver period has ended Saturday.
In other news, Allen said the handful of players who have been injured for more than a week worked out Friday. Therefore, he is hopeful that some or all of them will be healthy enough to play in the regular-season opener Sept. 10.
That list includes wide receivers Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore, center Stefen Wisniewski and defensive tackle Richard Seymour.

If the Raiders are still looking to add a DE/OLB, Adrian Hamilton was cut by the Cowboys. He was impressive this preseason.

Kind of simplistic there. Plenty of good young players don’t make a roster their first time around. Depends entirely on the situation.
For Dallas, it was a numbers game at linebacker. Had plenty, and Hamilton lost out. Another team will pick him up.

RegMac is bold. Keeping King is smart. But keeping the OC is unbold.
Like I said in my post game report live from Seattle last night, I’ll repeat, I want to see the Raidahs butt roast the chargers to dispell any doubt that Knapp is screwing up the offense. A butt roast is a must. A flat out roasting. Nothing less will be satisfactory.

Saints have 5 tailbacks on roster and DA has major ties to the team. Maybe Reggie working on something for Pierre Thomas or Chris Ivory?
Also backup center/guard Matt Tennant was waived. A pretty solid player IMO.

CB is a weakness. Got plenty of them but few with real talent.

If our organization is scrambling to sign other teams trash then we are truly in trouble…
I’d like to think they are happy with the men they have and are ready to move forward.
We have had an entire off season to acquire talent….any addition to the team at this point is merely crack filler…
I can see us signing another DB and LB in the next day or so….but these additions won’t bring much to the table…

LOL. That’s a new one.
It’s common sense.
The roster simply isn’t strong enough to not explore any options that might make the team better. Even far more talented teams do that.
The kind of holes this roster had can’t be fixed in one offseason. McKenzie and Allen are doing exactly what they should be doing – constantly evaluating their roster, and making whatever practical moves they can to make the team better. It’s a never-ending process, especially for teams that still have a long way to go to get to where they want to be.

Right about when it was explained that we want to keep him around for next year, but can’t really afford to lose the roster or practice squad slot. However, if he were hurt, we’d have to place him on IR, which means he gets his full contract pay (not peanuts, even for a UDFA), and will be in next year’s camp.
The term is “stashing.” The Redskins did this to Mark Rypien and the Cowboys did it to Jim Zorn for two straight seasons each once upon a time.

Every team will always have a roster that needs improvement in some area.
If the focus is improving the roster at this point in the year then we will always be behind the bar instead of setting it….
So what that’s what other teams are doing.
Look at the Athletics baseball team. They don’t follow the way things are done, they do it their own way.
Beat the Sox by 18 runs tonight and have one of the Best Records in baseball. Billy Beane is gonna laugh last, and laugh best.
We have the men on this team to do the job needed in order to compete. We have to believe that. Our organization needs to have faith in the men who they brought in to compete for this roster.
Now is not the time to add to this team.

I don’t want any excuses from someone hiding behind an alias who works for the Raiders trying to steer this conversation….
It ain’t gonna happen, not today…..
The team is what it is….set sail with the crew and find out who we are and what we can be….
Too many additions at this point only weaken the situation…
We should be hearing how proud we are of the 53 men who made the team….
We should be getting a LIST of the men who made it…not a list of those who have been cut….
Obviously we are planning more moves….this is concerning IMO.

I figured wrong;
I figured at least one would make 53 man roster:
between LBs Kilgore & Stupar;
I figured correctly that Nix would make 53 man roster; worth keeping around for a couple of years- ceiling very high, could even be a tackle.
also that Ihenacho & Cumbie were locks, we would have lost both and will if either are waived, neither will make it to PS, other teams will claim them in a heartbeat.

====================
Your example is a team in a completely different sport. And even then, they’re known for roster turnover and constant evaluation of their players.
Sorry, the Raiders are going to be honest in their evaluations of their players. No amount of “faith” in “their guys” is going to change that. Every player is part of a larger picture, and if another player fits that picture better than the Raiders will do what they need to. Maybe they won’t add anyone. Maybe they’ll add a couple players. Are they going to remake the roster? No. But if they find a player who fits what they do better than one of the fringe players on their roster? They’d be silly not to explore that possibility. Again – this is not a team that is so good they can afford to pass on opportunities to get better.

Crawford flashed a little bit as a pass-rusher too, but needs to be more consistent. He’s a developmental guy, but not bad for depth. Lots of upside. Not sure who else is available at DE, though. The best veteran available was probably Andre Carter, and he’s not quite healthy.

You say “WE” are going to be honest in our evaluations of “OUR” players?
When does this radical honesty begin. Today?
Surely we could have been honest before the draft? Surely we could have been honest before OTA’s and mini camp?
So why now?

My firm belief that the Giants will appear in Nawleens is twofold: they have confidence that comes with knowing how to win, and they know how to get hot when its nutt cuttin time.
The Raidahs will gain their confidence in battle, week by week, and become a tough unit that takes them all the way. Allen will wise on to knapp and let Carson call his own plays. After all, CP3 did work out with his players in the off season and knapp wasn’t there.

===========================
The Raiders DID evaluate before the draft and in OTAs. They found the best players available to them at the time, and did what they could to fit them into what they are trying to do as a team. But with the salary cap situation the way it was, and the limited amount of draft picks, they didn’t have a lot to improve with.
The only reason this discussion is happening now is that the market just got flooded with 700 new free agents – a few key ones being the victims of a numbers game. So McKenzie and Allen will continue evaluating. Certain players who were the best available at the time might not be anymore.
The Raiders are right to kick some tires. There’s absolutely no reason not to.

Need I say more?
OK, if you insist. Throwing backwards almost cost us because seattle picked the ball up and scored but the refs ruled it a forward pass. The replacements have been good to the Raidahs.

I can give you a few reasons not to:
1. We are the Oakland Raiders, we do not do what other teams do for the sake of it’s what everyone else is doing. We make a decision and we ride with it. If we make a mistake, then it’s gonna be a big f’in mistake. And who would want it any other way? That’s how we learn.
2. Kick some tires you say? How did kicking the tires work last night? 3 fumbles in 3 touches….okay okay….one was a muff…and the ball was given back to us…Roscoe only returns punts and couldn’t even get his helmet on…and this happened while our GM was getting interviewed during the game. Kinda embarrassing if you ask me.
3. When we continue to cut players who have been in our system we allow other teams to sign them….and give away our intel….if we make this a habit…before we know it….our intel isn’t so effective.
4. Because I said so!
So no reason not to you say….try again!

1. You don’t constantly evaluate your players “just for the sake of it”. You do it because it’s a smart thing to do when you’re building a competitive football team.
I don’t look both ways before I cross the street because “everyone is doing it”. I do it because if I don’t, there’s a good chance I’ll get my s*** ruined by oncoming traffic.
2. Kicking tires worked great, considering Ford was injured and the Raiders didn’t want to risk their primary backups at RB in the return game. Again – depth is a major concern (as it has been for years). The Raiders did what they needed to do to put warm bodies on the football field. It’s not like what they already had in the return game was working so well that they had no business looking to improve it.
3. EVERY team is cutting players who have been in their system. But the Raiders aren’t turning over their roster. They’re looking at the bottom 2 or 3 roster spots, and seeing if there are better options for the team. That’s it. It’s a process every team goes through because that’s how you build a team. It’s why teams have personnel departments.

I could care less about being competitive. I want to be dominant. The same way I am dominating you in this conversation. Sure, you’re explaining all the play it safe moves….some can buy that…some will buy it!
As far as your comment regarding traffic….perhaps you should test fate once in a while and just walk across the street. Like I said, have a little faith….make the traffic look out for you for a change…..have some balls!
So you are claiming Roscoe was brought in to save the health of our valuable players? Why then did he not return the ball in the 2nd half?

Unfortunate to hear that talks are resuming with the regular officials. Personally, I’m fine with the replacements.
Jerry Jones had this to say:
“The (replacement) officials are going to make mistakes, but believe you me, the officials that would be there if we got this resolved will make a lot of mistakes.”

It would be nice to be a Raider employee. Maybe then I’d have healthcare and paid vacation. One cam dream…
It’s also how you build a dominant team. You don’t build a dominant team by ignoring players who can make your team better.
You act as if looking for a way to add more pieces means the Raiders aren’t coaching their players up. The reality is that some players are simply not as good as others. They’re brought in by a team to compete for a job, and if they win a job it’s because they do at least one or two things well enough to have value. But what if another player comes along who does those things better? Maybe they were cut by a team who already had adequate depth in that area. Why would you not want to see if that player fits in?
Parrish didn’t return the ball in the 2nd half because the coaches had seen enough and they had other players they wanted to evaluate in that role. Pretty straightforward.
These are the most basic concepts when it comes to what an NFL front office does. I don’t know why these things have to be explained to you. Maybe you just think the players on the Raiders’ roster are better than they are. Depth has been an issue for the Raiders for years – it certainly was last season. That doesn’t change in one offseason, especially when your team is over the salary cap and has no high draft picks.
September 1st, 2012 at 12:23 am
Healthcare and paid vacation is your idea of dreaming?
Funny how you claim what you can get by being an employee as opposed to what you can give?
Sounds about right.
“The reality is that some players are simply not as good as others”
The reality is that some coaches are not as good as others….the reality is that the front office and the coaching staff have endless excuses for not winning games….and they all start with the talent of the players….
These guys are all professional athletes.
You think that there is that much difference between them?
There isn’t.
Look at Arron Rodgers….who went to a Junior College out of High School.
Look at Jerry Rice, Mississippi Valley where?
Look at Walter Peyton….
The list goes on and on…
There is talent everywhere….and those who know what to look for know how to find it….

Those who know what they’re doing are few and far between.
Most simply mimic one another.
Look at the game.
How much diversity do you see within the scheme?
Compare it against what you see in college.
If you get out on Friday’s, you will see true creativity….

Isn’t it funny how the mediocre coaches stay in the league and those with talent get lured away by the almighty dollar to be on television?
The players don’t get this luxury….no sir….cut em and find another who will outexecute his counterpart…
Coaches and ownership take no responsibility….and why should they….they have the players to take the blame!
September 1st, 2012 at 12:36 am
Healthcare and paid vacation is your idea of dreaming?
Funny how you claim what you can get by being an employee as opposed to what you can give?
=============
At this point? Yep. It would be an improvement over the current situation, anyway.
Why wouldn’t I claim what I can get if I was hired by a company that offers those things to me as a condition of my employment? I give them hard work 40 hours a week, and then they provide the agreed-upon compensation for my services. Isn’t that exactly how capitalism works?
I come from a generation of people who were all “required” to work for free in order to prove their worth on the job market – and most of us didn’t get hired after doing so. So don’t talk to me about “what I can give”.

I don’t think we can assume to know anything about the coaching staff until we see them in real games that require a real gameplan.
What we can see is a relatively steep dropoff in talent between the first team and second team, based on their performance in the same vanilla schemes.
Considering they inherited most of the players on this staff, and that there’s not much anyone could do about that in one offseason, I don’t see why they wouldn’t try to see what else is out there. It’s not like kicking the tires on a couple players means they’re going to stop coaching the players they already have. Hell, they might not even sign any new players.

my evaluation of this team’s units:
OL: starters are good to go, especially when wiz gets back. brisiel is not great but i’m hoping his career suggests otherwise. serious lack of depth though. bergstrom solid. barksdale so-so. not sold on parsons. reggie will be looking for depth.
TE: it is what it is. meyers is adequate i guess. gordon the blocker and ausberry the developmental receiver. no one likely available that could start except for cooley.
WR: when healthy we have possibilities. i am now thinking ford might surprise this season. it’s his theird year, that’s when receivers break out. look at dhb last year.
RB: if healthy, we’re golden here. u guys ragging on goodson have it wrong. he’s a good back.
QB: no problems here if palmer plays well. solid backup in leinart. i think we’ll see pryor on the field in a slash role at times.
DL: very deep. good talent, even w/o seymour.
LB: a lot depends on mcclain but the other two are good. decent backups but we need one more.
S: very deep. good.
CB: i think we’re ok here. i think chekwa is on the way out. reggie trying to get something for him, since young corners who were decently regarded 1 year ago do have value.
the raiders will have a good season depending on two things. palmer plays like a top 10 or at least top 15 qb. and no injuries. our starters are good. thin on depth.

Rob I agree with almost all of it.Guess I’m in the minority in here in regards to Seymour.I believe he is
the catalyst on the line. There was no push up the middle
at all last night. He gets the double and Kelly gets after
it.If either of those two go down we’re hosed IMO.Most of our Dline sacks are from them or the pressure they
create.TE….not sure we have one.Bummer coz this O
features the TE a lot.Romac calls the D and apparently
is good at it.If he can improve on run D he will allow
Wheeler to play to his strengths.DB’s well we kept a lot for cutting purposes.Case we can find help from the recently unemployed.Good post BTW.

twinkle– don’t get me wrong. i still think seymour is good when he plays. he may be slipping a bit though. and i’m very curious about his injury. i mean he hasn’t played much ball lately. i still think he can bring a lot to the table, but if he ends up too gimpy, i think houston is emerging big time, and bryant is solid. and bilukidi has a lot of upside. i’m not really that big on cumbie. seems a bit of a one-trick pont to me (6′7″ guy with hands up, blocking passes/field goals).
September 1st, 2012 at 2:10 am
Depth came up last night. we rarely talk about it because we rarely have it. I suspect that Reggie has been working on this from day one. It is why he has a 7 million dollar war chest, one of the most important reggie tasks = moving pieces around so the team has depth.
Mister Davis overpaid too many players like seymour, routt, deangelo, etc.
September 1st, 2012 at 2:13 am
I believe Sey has made a deal with the Reg.
Give me rest and I will perform on game day.
If I dont play well I will retire.
Seymour seems like that type of a man. He will not want to sit on the bench and his pride will not allow him to perform poorly.
Unless of course, its all about the money with him.
I say he is honorable
September 1st, 2012 at 2:16 am
I would not bother kicking the tires on hightower. Scatarat is mister cut block himself. If Tim cannot play there, he will not do well here.
Goodson>hightower
September 1st, 2012 at 2:23 am
how much 3-4 do u think we can play with 5 LB’s on the team? i suppose tollefson counts.
September 1st, 2012 at 2:25 am
Seymour isn’t retiring.
He’d be out of his mind to walk away from millions of guaranteed dollars.
He’ll take those dollars regardless of whether he earns them or not.
September 1st, 2012 at 2:25 am
tim hightower blew out his knee last season. probably not healthy. otherwise, he would be a great fit. but if the tree we have now stay healthy, they are all darts.
September 1st, 2012 at 2:27 am
we will see regarding seymour. i mean he has barely played/practiced more than curry at this point. and we kept 5 DT’s, and houston plays there too. something is going on there.
September 1st, 2012 at 2:32 am
Seymour will perform when it counts, but I also believe he will retire after this year. 12 years on the front line is a murderous job. You can’t expect him be full steam ahead in training camp at this point his career.
This season will be his farewell tour. He probably already knows that Desmond Bryant is nipping at his heels.
September 1st, 2012 at 2:33 am
wait. are we heading into the regular season with alex parsons as the starting center? he’s never played in a game. undrafted free agent last year. gulp.
September 1st, 2012 at 2:38 am
hey palmer haters. if u take away the 1st game he played in last year, with virtually no practice, his yardage was nearly 300 per game. he would have thrown for over 4600 yards. without dmc. i think we may see a big year from carson.
September 1st, 2012 at 2:38 am
Three darts ? Maybe. All 3 are fast. Taiwan is a blur. DMAC is the best all purpose back in the NFL. Combines blazing speed, strength, blocking and hands.
Goodson has decent speed, but that’s it. Fumbling machine and soft. More likely to cost a game with his turnovers than he is to win one with his legs.
Even if you believe Goodson is a dart that can contribute, there’s still an obvious need for a back with some heft and power to complete the Raid backfield. Need a hammer that can gain some yards and help carry the load.
September 1st, 2012 at 2:40 am
so far interesting pick ups could be
WR Jabar Gaffney – depending on how Moore progresses.
QB Brian Hoyer – wondering if they are having second thoughts on Leinart
RB Rock Cartwright – special teams abysmal, would help immediately
CB Dominique Franks – has some possibilities, but thats if DVD is dealt for a late pick
QB Josh Johnson – basically the same deal as T.P., but better decision making
CB Alphonso Smith – only drawback is his size, ballhawking type DB
TE Evan Moore – nice receiving TE and we need one in this offense, less expensive than C.Cooley
OG Deuce Lutui – if only he fit the ZBS, more of a mauler str8 ahead OL
OG Kasey Studdard – decent because familiar with Pollack scheme, and back up OGs were blasted apart by Seattle’s backup DL’s
DT Remi Ayodele – played on same squad when Dennis Allen coached at N.O. so familiarity, there.
RB Jacob Hester – again, its almost worth it if Hester or Cartwright could return kicks. I’d sign BOTH – coverage has been HORRIFIC.
others to consider
CB Leigh Torrence
CB/KR Justin Miller (why not, after that display by Roscoe Parrish – HELP!!)
CB SydQuan Thompson – surely will be brought back by Denver (sneaking him to clear waiver)
RB Vai Taua – just trying to clear him through waivers – ran through and around Oak, but I’m putting him here, because Oakland had poached from Seahawks before (notably, Marcell Reece and another RB before then)
WR Tim Benford
RB Deji Karim – would be a nice pickup, but same skill set as Taiwan Jones, and T.J has more speed.
OT Trai Essex – just bring em in to kick the tires.

i believe we reggie will be looking hard at OL and LB. perhaps a big back. question is who is likely to be dropped. if an OL is brought in, then nix. if an LB, then a CB. but a RB has no obvious corresponding cut. they are NOT cutting goodson. they traded for him and he’s had some nice runs. the most likely guy would be cumbie or a CB.

September 1st, 2012 at 3:20 am
Curry can practice, he just can’t practice with the team.
Raids used the new IR clause on Curry. In the past, if you were IR’d, you were done for the year. This year, you can IR ONE player, and he is eligible to play later – provided he sits out 6 weeks.
I’m pretty sure the new IR clause allows for the Raids to release Curry and use this new IR clause on another player should the need arise. For example, if Palmer gets injured in week one but could likely return in the 2nd half of the season, Raids could release Curry and then place Palmer on special IR without losing Palmer for the entire year.
September 1st, 2012 at 3:28 am
I must be getting old and senile. I see a different seahawk team then many here do.
Pete has improved the team every year. That defense was pushing people around last year, cornerbacks were doing great and they have depth on both sides of the line.
IMHO the Raiders are a better team but the seahags may have a big year
September 1st, 2012 at 3:29 am
Curry is just on the standard PUP list.
There are three players on IR: Humphrey, King, Underwood. Underwood likely to be the special one (at this point). The rule doesn’t require them to nominate a ’special’ IR. They just put people on IR as they go along, and at some point can choose a player to take off IR within 6 weeks of being IR’d. Then has 21 days to be placed on 53 man roster or must be released.
September 1st, 2012 at 3:32 am
RM99…I believe the IR now lasts for eight weeks
instead of the season.I thought we’d used the PUP on
Curry. Thus he is unable to practice with the squad for
six weeks.I’m probably wrong but that was my take.

September 1st, 2012 at 3:43 am
PUP = 6 weeks inactive to play/train, doesn’t count against roster until he is healthy and when re-activated means a player on the 53 must be released to make room for him.
IR = out for season. But a player can be selected from the IR list to return to the 53 man roster, as long as it’s within 6 weeks of when he got IR’d. When he comes off IR, he still doesn’t count to the 53 man roster (he becomes another PUP situation)…he can only train off the side, and the team has 21 days to decide whether to put him on the 53 man roster. If they don’t he cant be re-IRd, instead he MUST be released.
September 1st, 2012 at 3:44 am
And the only players on IR who are eligible to be ’special’ are those who suffered an injury during the pre-season, NOT off-season.
September 1st, 2012 at 3:44 am
I thought once you went to Injured Reserve … you’re done for the year, no?
=========================================
Previously, yes.
My understanding is a club can place ONE player on a special IR list this year, and that player is eligible to return later, after sitting out a mandatory specified time.
September 1st, 2012 at 3:45 am
Like I said the IR is now only eight weeks. It is no longer for the season.I’ll go find the info if anyone

IR is now only eight weeks. It is no longer for the season
***
seriously?
wow!
place Jacoby Ford on IR then
September 1st, 2012 at 3:53 am
Well, the correct way to put it is…
Teams put players on IR, as they go along they put them on IR. And they’re done for the year. All of them. It’s just that at any time within 6 weeks of a player being IR’d a team can choose one of them to return to the 53 man roster. It’s not like the Raiders nominate today say Underwood to be the “special” one. They just IR who they IR, and they’re all in the same boat…looking at a year out. Let’s say by week 4 we’ve had to IR another 4 players (say, Ford, DVD, Leinart, Goethal). So now we have 7 players IRd. Then in week 5, the Raiders feel that one of those players, say, Jacoby Ford, is worth bringing back. So they THEN elect him to return, he can start training on the side of the field, and the Raiders have 21 days to decide whether to activate him or they will have to RELEASE him completely.
It’s a risky move, you better make sure it’s legit, that ‘must be released’ rule to prevent shenanigans.

#190…once per season, one player only.
Again, only players IR’d during the pre-season are eligible to be ’special’, not players IR’d from the off-season. And they only have 6 weeks from the time of being IR’d to be eligible to return. Then they have 21 day deadline for the team to decide whether to activate to the 53 otherwise they must release the player contractually.

Raids have been pretty fortunate so far on the injury front.
No season enders to any starters or draft picks. Just lost two guys not likely to make the 53.
Couple of sprains and pulled muscles, but no broken bones or torn ligaments.
So far, so good.

September 1st, 2012 at 4:03 am
Looks like I’m wrong too haha…
—-from the link posted above—–
The injured-reserve rule permits teams to re-activate one player from IR during the season. That player must be designated as of Tuesday, and he can begin practicing after Week 6 of the regular season and resume playing after Week 8.
A special injured-reserve rule applies for the 2012 season because teams already have cut their rosters to 75 players. Any team that has placed any player on injured reserve and wants to designate that player for the new short-term IR must place him back on the active roster by Friday at 9 p.m. and then designate him after 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:03 am

Huh ?
September 1st, 2012 at 4:08 am
So, the Raiders have to literally designate someone by Tuesday, and they have to be someone who has been IRd during the pre-season. Not before, not after.
Our current IR list…
14 Calhoun, Duke WR
88 Humphrey, Tory TE
78 Hurd, Zach OL
38 Jackson, Rashawn RB
2 King, Marquette P
49 Kurn, Mario LB
28 Underwood, Brandon DB
73 Wang, Ed OL
So we haven’t yet told the NFL who our ’special’ one is, but chances are it’d be Underwood.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:10 am
99,
it was a joke. you said we’ve been pretty fortunate on the injury front (which I agree) so I asked if you thought fat camp was tougher than a Dennis Allen training camp
September 1st, 2012 at 4:10 am
Curry may fit the IR special designation. If he doesn’t
need to sit the year out that is.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:11 am
Why Underwood?
he sucks imo
September 1st, 2012 at 4:13 am
Never mind….Curry’s on the PUP.Hope it works out for him…I like the guy’s hustle.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:13 am
Okay I’m still confused.
From a PFT article on the new IR rule….
—
The injured reserve rule allows one player per team to be activated from IR after a “major injury.” The player must miss at least six weeks of practice. He may be placed on the active list at least eight weeks after placement on injured reserve.
Unlike the PUP list, then, the window for returning to practice doesn’t close. Once it’s open, it stays open.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft has said that, if such a provision had been in place four years ago, the team possibly would have used the designation for quarterback Tom Brady, who tore an ACL in Week One.
Here’s where it gets complicated. Because teams already have cut to 75, a special procedure applies for 2012. As to teams that already have placed players on IR, the player for whom the short-term IR procedure will be used must be placed back on the active roster by 9:00 p.m. ET, August 31. He’ll then count as one of the final 53.
Then, after 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 4, each team can place one player on the modified IR list.
This means that teams hoping to use the new IR rule for a player already on injured reserve will have to displace another player for nearly four days, using a roster spot for the injured player and then creating a roster spot next Tuesday, when that player goes back to IR.
Confused? Good. Because it took me an hour to figure it out.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:17 am
Unless there is a roster freeze on the the guy you have to cut the whole thing becomes worse than useless.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:18 am
GG, I like your first explanation better than the system in place.
Thought I heard that you could only use the special IR once and had to select one player only.
Didn’t realize it had to be done off a pre-season IR list only.
Would be a lot better if your ‘assemble an IR list as you go through the season’ and then use the one special IR when needed was in effect.

And from it, 40 odd (as per DA) are about certain, but there’s a need for about 10 or so players to upgrade, the game against Seattle showed him that the depth needs upgrading.
Now RM finally has a situation where there’s 1000+ players available in FA, including not only vets but a lot of talented youth, waived draftees or undraftees, it would be negligence of RM to NOT be upgrading at this time of peak player availability.
Imagine if RM just sat on his hands with the 53, and the days went by seeing other teams snatch up some intriguing players, people would be screaming that RM is doing nothing.

Btw, i don’t like Greg Knapp.
He better be more vertical thru the regular season.
For instance, Green Bay plays a version of WCO and they’re very vertical still. Hybrid concepts.
We saw some of that in our preseason, but the majority of calls were all the short horizontal stuff, and the aggravation of the predictable draw play on 3rd and long, or the 3rd and 4 that sees plays called where players run 4 yard routes, but catch the ball a yard short.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:52 am
Palmer, Leinart, Goodson, Schmitt, Criner, Streater, Brisiel, Bergstrom & Nix on offense.
Crawford, Bilukidi, Cumbie, Tollefson, Burris, Ihenacho, Wheeler, Bartell, Spencer, Lee, McCann & Francies on defense
All players brought in by somebody other than Al Davis
(Palmer, Curry & McCann courtesy of Hue Jax)
thats 21 of 53 new faces already
September 1st, 2012 at 4:54 am
I don’t think Reggie is going to look at a player and say ‘he’s an Al player’ and dump him for that reason.
No, if DHB plays well, he’ll be here. Think Reggie is smart enough to realize that NFL turnover is immense and that within a few years the roster will almost be entirely comprised of ‘his’ guys anyway.
I don’t expect a ‘purge anything related to Al’ scenario to go down, but as time goes on, Al’s signature brand of football and drafting philosophy will almost be completely dissipated.
Some Raider fans, jaded by the recent years of futility, will welcome the change.
This dinosaur laments it.

GG,
not gonna happen. Knapp is the most run-oriented OC in the league today, perhaps of the past decade
his offense will be vanilla or bland. no flavor, no trickeration. what you see is what you get. run to set up the pass. run-run-incomplete pass-punt. Thats why DMAC is so crucial to our success this year.

RRS, I think Hubert brought in ihenacho. At the end of the season he signed a bunch of guys off the street, Ivey also being one of them. Me thinks…
September 1st, 2012 at 5:01 am
the Knapp offense says “this is what we’re going to do to you and I dare you to stop it”
the screens & dump offs will be the majority of our completions. short crossing patterns, etc
Palmer is no longer in the Air Coryell offense, chucking the ball downfield for his WR to make a play. He’s still got that gunslinger mentality though, as we’ve seen in the preseason. That wont change
Dennis Allen is a gambler. He’d rather see Palmer throw into double coverage than take a sack or toss it out of bounds to live for the next play (like Kerry Collins was mandated to do from Norv Turner)

He looked good in preseason. Seems like a better option at backup LB than Sam Williams, Ricky brown, etc..
September 1st, 2012 at 5:09 am
Not a fan of all the rollouts either. We saw around the league in preseason (not just Raiders) teams killing it with heavy A-gap pressure and someone on blind-side contain. If it’s done like once every 10-15 pass plays, ok. But i can see much aggravation in the first half of the Chargers game seeing Palmer loping slowly and getting hurried/sacked on the rollout.
September 1st, 2012 at 5:10 am
I don’t like Knapp either.
He’s getting a pass so far on the basis of ‘he doesn’t want to show anything’ in the pre-season.
I don’t buy it.
Yeah, you don’t want to tip your hand early, but I think we’ve seen enough to get an idea of what he’s going to be like anyway.
Throughout the entire pre-season, I saw ONE play from him that had me thinking ‘that’s something new and worked ok’. Talking about the bubble screen quick hit to DMAC early in the first game.
Knapp is a bore. Too conservative. Will consistently throw short of the chains. Play calling in relation to time management at the end of a half or game is terrible.
Seems to be asking players to fit into his system, rather than building an offense designed to maximize the talents we have.
Seriously do not understand why he was given the job.
If the offense regresses, he’ll probably be the main reason.

Yep, the better OC’s tailor their offense around the players/weapons they have. Much aggravation with our offense in the first few games until RM/DA must do something, take play-calling off him, or install Saunders, or maybe DA in coach meetings installing a gameplan against a team forcing Knapp to compile all the more aggressive plays that I am sure are there in the playbook. I just rather see us come out and win in good fashion against the Chargers, and get on a roll, and not have to endure first a month period where Knapp’s play-calling is the main reason for on-field losses, going 1-3 and having DA forced to do something to Knapp.

A guy worth a shot is RB Tauren Poole, he was cut from Carolina after going undrafted out of Tennessee (Reggie’s alma mater).
This kid showed some potential in College and was the MVP at the East-West Shrine game, he was one of the players I mentioned before the draft as worth a look.

#250…
Pretty much after every 3 and out, or timeout, you see Knapp having to talk to the QB or other player asking them why this and that happened, etc. He can’t see shizz on the sideline, distracted with all the noise, assistants he has to go locate, etc. Just cant get into that mental zone a play-caller needs to be in, cocooned and seeing everything from above not having to ask etc. Knapp play-calling is just him reading his own same decade-old script. I think the worst thing we’re gonna see right off the bat is that whole agony of all the three and outs in the first half…like last time Knapp ran Kiffin’s offense. I gouged out my eyes and brain that year.

RAIDERMAN99
Tauren Poole 5′10 213, is an all-around back with decent size speed combo, was projected to be drafted in the mid-low rounds, I don’t know why he went undrafted, maybe because he had a down year as a senior after a good junior year.
He got positive reviews at Carolina’s training camp but didn’t make the cut.
Here’s a couple of pre-draft reports:
The National Football Post:
A strong, well-put together back with a thicker lower half and good overall muscle tone through the thighs. Possesses a good first step when asked to press the line of scrimmage. Gets north/south quickly and deciphers info well inside. Displays an above-average feel between the tackles and does a nice job setting up blocks and accelerating toward daylight. At times makes some poor decisions as a runner, typically in space, but for the most part is pretty dependable.
Is a one-cut back who is a bit tight in the hips when he gets up to full speed, more of a weaver when asked to run in space. However, inside he keeps his feet under him, can stick his foot in the ground and explode quickly up field. Does a good job finishing runs and lowing his pad level in short yardage /goal line situations. But inside, he runs a bit upright. Doesn’t run with great forward lean when pressing the hole and at times gets knocked off balance and goes down far too easy. Nevertheless, runs hard and has the type of straight-line speed at the second level to outpace angles and create yards by the chunk. Doesn’t have a ton of wiggle to his game, is better off running toward space in the open field. But in tight area displays enough short area quickness and power to side step a defender and break a tackle.
I came away impressed with his ability on 3rd downs as well. Is an intelligent blocker, recognizes blitz pick-up quickly, is patient into blocks and displays natural anchor strength. Also, demonstrates a good feel in the pass game, has some savvy as a route runner, locates the ball quickly and will pluck/create in the short passing game when matched up on linebackers.
Impression: A thick, strong back who runs hard and displays natural one-cut ability. Runs a bit high and isn’t overly fluid making defenders miss. But can break tackles, play on third down and looks like a solid contributing NFL back.
- From cnnsi:
Biography: Two-year starter who posted 187 attempts/693 yards/5 touchdowns on the ground and 21 receptions for 164 yards as a senior. Junior totals included career-best numbers of 204/1034/11 rushing with 22/171/1 receiving. All-academic performer in college.
Positives: Creative, quick ballcarrier who consistently displays the ability to find yardage. Possesses a burst of speed and the ability to cut back against the grain. Loses little momentum changing direction. Weaves through the traffic on the inside, gets through small openings and is a quick-footed ballcarrier who bounces around defenders or piles. Adjusts off the initial hit and immediately gets back to running form. Picks his way on the inside, can string several moves together over the course of a single run and consistently runs north-south. Gives effort blocking and picks up assignments. Adequate receiver out of the backfield.
Negatives: Does not display the flat-out speed to beat defenders around the corner. Not a back who breaks tackles or picks up much yardage off initial contact.
Analysis: Poole is a versatile back with terrific size/speed, and he could fill many roles in the NFL. He’d be effective as a third-down back or situational runner and could eventually develop into a No. 1 ballcarrier for an NFL franchise.
Projection: 4th
September 1st, 2012 at 5:45 am
Could lightining strike twice?.
“Arian Foster, a mentor for Poole at Tennessee. Like Poole, Foster rushed for more than 1,000 yards as a junior, fewer than 700 as a senior and was not drafted.
Foster signed as a free agent in 2009 and in 2010 he became a star.”

Pretty sure his fumbling is going to bite us, if he’s given touches.
Would prefer a hammer capable of gaining a few yards and helping to carry the load.
Love Taiwan, and for my money DMAC is the best all-purpose back in the NFL.
Goodson does not bring to the table what the Raids need to complete the backfield.
Need some more heft, power and physicality.

Knapp knows this is his last shot as and NFL OC-play-caller, his last 2 jobs as OC were handed to him by his best buddy Jim Mora Jr. back in Atlanta and Seattle, in SF he had success but that was 8-9 years ago, the League has evolved since then, teams are going with much more agressive, down the field type schemes, Knapp better evolve as well, I still have hopes for the guy.

I didn’t like the hire and I have serious doubts about him, but he’s smart and a hell of a QB Coach, he just needs to figure out how to implement some new stuff into his playbook, perhaps spending 2 years next to Kubiak helped.

Would like to see Kahlil Bell get a look. Honestly, I’d feel a lot more comfortable with the running game if the Raiders carried four RBs.
September 1st, 2012 at 6:12 am
Saints have 5 RBs and 2 FBs.
I’ve always loved Pierre Thomas all the way back to Illinois. If we can trade for Thomas or Cadet (could be a solution as a returner as well). Another I like is Armando Allen, recently waived by the Bears.
Tauren Poole is a good prospect as well.
Another return guy we could evaluate is Clyde Gates, has 4.30 speed, needs coaching as a receiver, not versatile but.
If I were cold and hard GM, I’d trade Ford for Pierre Thomas/Cadet. Pick up A.Allen from waivers.

I disagree here, Kubiak’s Offense is good, I’ve watched a few games over the last couple of years and the play design is very good, you can constantly find open receivers down the field and they make a ton of big plays, very close to what Shanny does in Washington, I’ve watched them last year and trust me, every game there were a number of guys open for big plays only to have Grossman or Beck make horrible throws.

Can’t see it.
DMAC will pound in addition to the speed and hands game – but you don’t want to wear him out with too many gut runs.

He should. Ill be disappointed if he doesn’t get at least 10 rushes/catches/targets a game.
September 1st, 2012 at 6:28 am
I don’t think Reece has the RB mentality, the first thing you need is vision and we don’t know if he has that, but he runs too upright and doesn’t seem get low and take on tacklers, he can gain yards on draws and designed plays, but I don’t see him running between the tackles effectively, then again it’s a new scheme, maybe he feels more comfortable running sideways and picking a hole, oh and he needs to secure the rock man, seems to me he carries it too far away from his body.
September 1st, 2012 at 6:32 am
You remember the pass JC hit Reese on near the end of the Jet game last year ?
JC, on the move, hit him in stride deep downfield. Might have been Campbell’s best throw as a Raid. But I digress…
If used correctly, Reese can be the most effective fullback catching passes in the entire league.
Typically, one envisions a FB catching a pass in the flats, or perhaps rumbling on a screen.
As a FB, Reese is capable of stretching the field like no other. Has good hands and speed and he will make a catch with his back to the LOS. Unique talent set that should be utilized.

As far as Hagan is concerned. I was pissed to see him leave over TJHoush last season, but with Streater emerging as a possesion guy, i don’t think there’s much need for Hagan at this point.

Agreed. Weren’t many options in FA or the draft who could help immediately, either.
This is why Koppen is one guy I’d like the Raiders to try out. If he has anything left in the tank, he’s a C/OG with zone blocking experience who can fill in, especially if Wisniewski isn’t 100% yet.
At offensive tackle, though? Barksdale may be the best the Raiders can do unless they make a trade – and they’re definitely not the only team looking to trade for a tackle right now.

I might be crazy, but I’m less concerned about our return game than I am about our kick coverage.
Don’t know what this Hoffman cat has been doing, but whatever it is – it ain’t working.

I was cool with him as the #2 back right up until he was the feature back last game. But you can’t be our backup RB and have ZERO inside game.
++++++++==
Jones had ZERO lanes to run thru. DMAC would have gotten ZERO run with the way the D was playing.
Gotta remimber the sea D plays against cables zbs every practice. They were in every gap, on EVERY run.

Bruce Campbell is actually the 3rd OT in Carolina behind New Mexico’s own Byron Bell, according to the Carolina blog’s depth chart (Cat Scratch Reader; best blog name in the NFL).
Expect ol’ Lochness to continue to polish his role as a sweatpant wearing inactive on Sundays.

To run the ball, you must have a HOLE to run thru.
September 1st, 2012 at 7:08 am
I get that, but there were yards to be had if he would have mentally been ok with taking a 1 or 2 yds and crashing forward.
He just looked like one of those cats who was trying to make it happen on every play instead of taking what was there.
Youngster, trying to impress, I get it.
Pretty sure the coaches can get it corrected.

===========================================
Honestly, I’m a little surprised Goodson and DVD made it.
Goodson’s AZ game was so freaking bad, I’d have released him right there.
Agree with ChrisNY – he will cost a game if he gets touches.
DVD looked like such a weak, puny gnat – and so lost in coverage – I thought he was a goner. Guess his draft status and supposed strong camp was enough.
Will NOT be surprised to see one or both dumped before the opener.

So from Last year to this years roster, have we improved?
Palmer / JC
Wheeler /wimbley
Bartell /routt
Goodson/bush
Burris/groves
Spencer/Johnson
Myers/boss
Schmitt/tonga
Briesel/Satele
I vote better at most positions with a couple of unknowns.

Yup JH, I do.
I’m tough on Slo. One of his harshest critics.
When someone fks up and hurts the Raids – I’m relentless.
Conversely, I give props when props are due.
I think Slo does a good job setting the D.
Think he’s vastly underrated in coverage.
Beginning to believe he is a good blitzer.
Still say he is not the run stuffer he should be.
Still remains on my ish list for the JOG, WHIFF and FUNERAL FKUP.
Slo has a long way to go to get off my ish list.

8-8 is my prediction, too. Same as last year. I think they’ll be 7-9 at worst, 9-7 at best.
But regardless of the number of wins, the franchise as a whole is making progress. You can’t expect to rebuild a franchise from the ground up in one season.
I know a lot of us are anxious to see a winner, but patience is key. This organization is doing a lot of things for the first time in its history.

I’ve never been a huge Knapp fan, but I’m not going to pass judgement on him before I see this offense roll out in live game action with a real gameplan.
September 1st, 2012 at 7:38 am
IMHO, if you go position by position and ask are we better this year compared to last? – you’re going to have some improvements and some downgrades.
Honestly though, that’s NOT the correct way to look at it.
The only real question is – is the SUM of our parts greater this year compared to last year ?
One thing we should all recognize is that assembling great individual talent goes a long way towards success – but ultimately the parts have to fit, players must know their roles, and the coaches have to get every ounce of effort and production out of them.
Sometimes a less talented squad can be more successful than a squad that appears loaded.
There’s an art to building a TEAM.
September 1st, 2012 at 7:40 am
I’ll tell you what – I enjoy the swagger Bartell and Spencer play with. Mostly because it’s not that kind of “swagger” that results in dumb penalties. And they’re more than willing to come up and make run stops.
Are either of them technically as talented as Routt? Nope. Do I expect them to perform better than he did last season? Absolutely.
September 1st, 2012 at 7:43 am
Roster at beginning of season is better than beginning of last season;
we’ve improved at:
WR (night and day),
OL (Vehldeer & Wisniewski are proven, although mainly because Barnes has improved so much),
LB (night and day)
S same players, yet each player: Branch, Huff, Giordano, & Mitchell has taken that next step-taken their game to a higher level;
QB Palmer, Leinart, Pryor are a level above Campbell, Boller, Pryor
Positions we are the same
K/P pro-bowl players
RB/FB McFadden one of the best, same concerns-this postion simply different in that we lost Bush, gained Schmitt, Jones gives us that quick acceleration Reece the X-factor still
DL one of the best still
CB could not be any worse than last year
(only) position we are weaker:
TE losing Boss hurts, but Meyrs, Gordon, and Ausberry now have the opportunity to prove otherwise
September 1st, 2012 at 7:43 am
Funny thing about “the whiff” is that really might have beed 55’s best game.
September 1st, 2012 at 7:44 am
Yup,part of that art is you dont trade a good wr for a seventh round pick especially when the others are known for being hurt. You might want to resighn the running back who got you the tough yard after your starter goes out after the 6th game as usuall. You dont completly change a top ten offense after the huge strides they just made. Not a believer in this new regime.Set backs, setbacks, setbacks.

What do you guys think of Josh Johnson and Brian Hoyer in relation to Leinart and Pryor, factoring in both short-term readiness and long-term upside? Which two would you keep?
I don’t see it happening, but I’d think both those guys are an upgrade over Leinart, especially in terms of upside value. I don’t think Pryor is ready at all, but don’t want to give up on him this early. We all knew he’s a project QB with absurd athleticism. And by all accounts he’s working his azz off.

Were there two of them that day ? Can’t remember.
Doesn’t matter really.
That WHIFF was so INCREDIBLY BAD, that it negated whatever he did earlier that game.
Just wiped it out.
Although a win in wk 17 still gets us the division, the WHIFF more than any other play cost us a playoff berth.
And since we’re going 19-0 this year – a shot at defending the Lombardi with a perfect season !

For all you “We need to run 2 TE’s sets” crowd:
The Raiders averaged 1.6 yards per carry when they had 2 TE’s on the field, a full 2.2 yards less than the 2nd worst team in the NFL”
Fire Hue!!!!!

Stop it trust me Knapp is chomping at the bit with the weapons he has, you guys stop complaining
September 1st, 2012 at 8:05 am
I also love it, because they give you the sacks and penalties of every starting NFL lineman.
Here’s ours from last year:
Veldheer- 4 sacks, 7 holds, 4 FS
Savage – 1 sack, 2 holds, 0 FS
Wiz – 1.5 sacks, 4 holds, 2 FS
Briesel – 1 sack, 2 holds, 5 FS
Barnes- 3.5 sack, 3 holds , 6 FS
September 1st, 2012 at 8:06 am
Also:
6.9 ypc were allowed by Oakland against 6 man O-lines. Out of 33 of such running plays, the Raiders only forced one to end in a loss.
September 1st, 2012 at 8:07 am
What do you guys think of Josh Johnson and Brian Hoyer in relation to Leinart and Pryor, factoring in both short-term readiness and long-term upside? Which two would you keep?

Matt Leinart is a waste of time. Even if he knows Krapp’s system – so what ?
He’s not going to win games now or in the future.
I thought we paid coaches good money to teach thier systems and prep the players. Somehow Matty Lice and his helium ballons made the roster, bcz he knows the system. Not good enough a reason for me.
Give me a guy that has a chance to develop into something any day of the week.
Don’t know enough to say whether JJ or BH can be anything (JJ didn’t look bad against SD), but I do know there’s NO FUTURE WITH LICE.

Hue + a legit DC > Dennis Allen + Knapp. Especially with Palmer at QB.
Not saying we won’t be good this year. Not saying DA can’t be a good HC. Just have my doubts about Palmer maximizing his skills in a WCO system. And Hue was one of the best play callers we’ve ever had … and we’ve had many. Hue is a far better play caller than Knapp. And, stylistically, I appreciated Hue’s wackiness, swagger and confidence more than DA’s all-business, make everything as boring as possible approach which can stall motivational ability over the long haul and be mistaken for a lack of confidence at times.

Compare Veldheer’s numbers to Duane Brown’s of Houston, who made the All-Pro 2nd team, and you see Jared has a long ways to go.
Brown gave up 2 sacks, with zero holds as a 16 game starter at LT.
0 holds to Veldheer’s 7.

Hue was not one of the best play callers we ever had! Hue was running around like a chicken with his head cut off. Some of his calls were dumbfounding. Some of the calls were half baked and caused penalties on the offense. It is funny when we remember back on things we only remember the good stuff.

Also from SI:
71.1% was the percentage of goal-to-go plays the Raiders ran the ball, tops in the NFL.
Raiders finished 24th in red zone efficiency.
Stubborn azz Hue, continued to fail in the red zone all last year running the ball, and never adapted.

I’ve said many times I loved Hue’s balls to the wall aggression. I’ll err on the side of aggression every time over boring and conservative. Having said that, even I think Hue went a little overboard.
Bottom line is Hue got himself fired. The tactical errors (not kicking FG against Cle, not going for 2 against Det), getting destroyed in back to back weeks against GB and Mia – were probably enough to get him canned.
But ultimately, he positively DOOMED himself with his big mouth and perceived power grab. He HAD to know Mark Davis was going to bring in a GM. He made it clear as day that he was going to be a problem within the coming organizational restructure.

Hue Jackson has OC’d 1 top 10 scoring team in 4 years as an OC.
Knapp has done so in 3 of his 9 years.
Hue is such a good OC, he is now coaching DB’s and ST’s, lol.

No i wont.Knapp has done jack shirt, and mooch was calling most of the the fkn plays.I doubt you wre even 3 years old back than.
September 1st, 2012 at 8:25 am
I just want to see Knapp adapt to the pieces he has. We’ve seen some signs of that thus far, but not enough to make any assumptions one way or the other.
His inability to adapt has been an issue at times, so that’s going to be something I’ll be watching closely.
September 1st, 2012 at 8:27 am
From the Super Bowl champion Giants odd stats:
220 plays on which Giants O-lineman allowed pressure on the QB, dead last in the NFL, 15 more than 2nd place.
September 1st, 2012 at 8:27 am
If it wasnt for allen, knapp would be coaching qb’s right now,not bad for a guy who supposed to have coached 3 great offenses.LOL

I’d also like to see what Knapp can do with Moore, Ford, Heyward-Bey, Reece, and McFadden all on the field at the same time. If you can’t make something happen with that lineup, then you shouldn’t be an offensive coordinator.

#408 is truth. Other head coaches went head to head against Hue for two years while he was the Raiders OC and HC/OC. There was no rush to get him as an OC. Compare that with say Todd Haley or some of the other former OC Head Coaches that were fired and how quickly teams picked them up as OC’s.
September 1st, 2012 at 8:30 am
#408 You wanna tell me when hue was a 4year offensive co? 1 year off.co., 1 year head coach, and still accomplished more than knapp in 10 years.SEE once again teenagers trying to talk about football is goofy.
September 1st, 2012 at 8:30 am
88.5%, percentage of drop-backs in which Eli Manning was pressured but avoided being sacked, the best escape rate in the league.
As I said, the Giants have a crappy O-line and still won the Super Bowl.
September 1st, 2012 at 8:31 am
I see you passed over the wager scneario, lol.
September 1st, 2012 at 8:31 am
O-linemen can’t be judged on this small sample of stats alone. It’s a position that really requires study of each play. What kind of movement they generate in the run game. What kind of pressure — not just sacks — they allow on passing plays. What kind of competition did they face, what kind of help did they have.
Veldheer was excellent last year with the exception of going against Julius Peppers. And he was just a 2nd year guy out of a D2 school. Only going to get better. Should be a cornerstone of this team for years to come.

1. DMAC staying healthy

I appreciate this sentiment but my impression of last years team was a disorganized mess with a carismatic coach that had an AD messiah complex. In interviews it was obvious Hue was very spontaneous – for instance he told Palmer he was not playing against KC but then threw him in. Pryor said he did not even talk to anyone because it was so chaotic in an interview. The defense says things like this year we are playing a “real defense.” I just have the impression that the reason we go so many penaltities and did so many stupid things is we were not adequately prepared at times and we did not make very good half time adjustments especially late in the season. If I was a player I would like to feel like we have a coherant game plan and plan of attack and have confidence my coaches were studying and putting me in a position to succeed rather than what I saw last year.
Oh and by the way Foshow – I was over 40 years old in the early 2000’s and I am no 49er’s fan but was aware of their system because it was similar to what Gruden was trying at the time in Oakland.

Oakfoshow – This is true but there were at least 5 teams that passed on Hue for OC including Pittsburg that was a former divsion rival and knew his work well. Face it he could not even get a position coach gig or something like Al Saunders has with us. He is working with the scout team for crine out loud. I think it will be a while before Hue gets an OC job if ever at least in the NFL.

And the skepticism is why the pundits are down on the Raiders.
If DMAC suffers another foot injury, he’s done.
As for CP, he should be able to execute the WCO if he’s the real deal. I don’t like the WCO or ZBS either…but they elected to go with Knapp so it is what it is.
The WCO is an offense that a QB with accuracy and pocket awareness should be able to execute at a high level.
Carson was traded for a 1st and a minimum 2nd round pick and paid $16 million. He should be ability or inability to excel is on him

I didn’t mind Hue, but the biggest downfall of the Raiders in 2011 was discipline. That’s what McKenzie came in wanting to improve, and that’s why Hue was not the right man for the job.
Allen may not make the Raiders a Superbowl contender in 2012, but he’ll make them a disciplined team. You don’t get to the Superbowl without being disciplined on the field.

While we are disagreeing on the facts, I do have some issues with this new offense. There are a lot of changes being made. We are going from a predominatly power blocking team to a zbs. We are making CP3 do a lot of 3 step drop timing routes and naked bootlegs. There is way more play action (and if you remember Campbell was so good at this he could fool the camera people!). We also do not have our BU running back Mr. Bush nor a true #1 TE or even WR at this pont. So I will say this. If McFadden does not stay healthy and our key recievers DHB and DenMoore do not stay healthy and get better we may be in for a long season as far as scoring. However, there is no way I would bet for the demise of a team I have been following since 1965!!
However, to say a WCO does not work is stupid. Take a look at Green Bay or even Oakland in 2001-2003 – those offenses can work but simply having the system is no magic cure.

Game goes OT with the score tied 13-13.
Told my bud, ‘I’ll let you place a bet on the total right now and you’ll lose’.
He says ‘Give me the UNDER’.
3 OT TD’s later, I ask him if he wants out of the bet.
He says ‘hell no’.
Comes down to 4th down. One more OT TD and he’s toast.
Offered him a final chance to call it off as the QB was scrambling for his life.
He says ‘no way’ just as the ball is caught for a 4th OT TD which puts it OVER.
God, I love gambling.

As a play-caller, I actually like Hue a lot. But being a GM, HC, and primary play-caller clearly put Hue in over his head. Missed a lot of details.
I thought he could improve. Davis and McKenzie felt differently. Hard to argue with them. They need their philosophy to be consistent throughout the organization. If they felt Hue couldn’t give them that (and we all saw his coaching style – he was far from a disciplinarian), then they absolutely needed to find someone whose style was more in line with what the team needs.
Allen is straight-forward. No nonsense. That’s what a team needs when they’ve been doing the little things wrong for decades.
Knapp I’m far from sold on, but it still remains to be seen what he plans to do with the talent he has on offense.

How much of HOU success on offense while Knapp was there was due to Andre Johnson’s dominance and their TE Daniels pro bowl level play? Raiders have neither. DMc is more talented than Foster tho.

Johnson and Daniels both missed a lot of time last season. Their running game, along with their ability to get the other TEs and H-back type players involved, kept their offense moving.
And of course, Knapp’s ability to coach up Yates.
It was definitely not all Knapp – it was mostly solid execution of an established scheme – but he contributed for sure.

I disagree. Biggest downfall of the Raiders was a defense at the bottom of the NFL. I credit Hue, the play caller and offensive leader for getting us to 8-8 despite losing DMac, and switching QBs midstream, with getting us that close to the playoffs despite being saddled with a D that he had little control of entering the season and too little time to fix after Al passed on.

LOL. Good god, you people have some ridiculous ideas of what “Raider” football is or should be.
The zone blocking scheme is pretty violent. The idea is getting your big men up the field so they can destroy linebackers at the second level. If that isn’t confrontational, I don’t know what is.
September 1st, 2012 at 9:10 am
Read Pat Kirwan’s book. The ZBS is simply the idea of a lineman blocking a gap, rather than a specific person. That’s it, and there’s nothing “wuss” about it.

Cork has flat-out stated that firing Hue was all Mark Davis’ call. Cork has the utmost confidence in that fact based on sources within the organization. Mark doing that could be for a lot of reasons, but since Mark almost always takes a hands-off approach on the football side of the business, they prob had little to do with Hue’s merits as a head football coach and more to do with something else such as wanting to put his own stamp on the team, wanting to eliminate those who had been in the org and may not take him as seriously as a new hire would, or maybe Hue personally irritated him for some reason.

Cork said it was that season ending press conference followed by, several days later, Hue marching into Mark’s office and informing Mark that he, Hue Jackson, would sit in on the GM interviews and would have final say over the GM hire. Mark didn’t exactly appreciate that (this is a mild way of putting it).

One of my frustrations with the Raiders (org and fanbase) is the low standard of play that is tolerated from highly paid players.
We should have the same expectations for Carson, DMAC and Huff as one would have for Ryan, McCoy and Reed

******************
Here is where we disagree. I did not think Hue was some awesome playcaller. I also know that Knapp has been a successful offensive coordinator at times. I also know last time with Oakland he with Cable as OL coach took one of the worst offenses in the History of the NFL (the 2006 Oakland Raiders) and made it at least mediocore in 2007 and actually had a top teir rushing game even though he had Jbustus hanging around his neck. If we fail this year it will be because DFAD did not stay healthy and our recievers and TE’s did not step up not because Knapp is some goat or something. I just do not think people are objectively looking at his record.

The Reggie still did not waste any time canning him, and no other NFL team brought him in to anything more than what Randy Hanson was doing with the Raiders.

Cork has flat-out stated that firing Hue was all Mark Davis’ call. Cork has the utmost confidence in that fact based on sources within the organization.
===================================================
Corky’s probably right. (There’s a first time for everything)
Consider:
You’re Mark Davis. You know you can’t possibly replace Al. There’s absolutely no doubt you’re going to bring in a GM. And here’s Hue, going power crazy, thinking he’s going to call who the GM is going to be. Hue thought he was going to be Al Davis. Hue challenged the authority of his boss, when his boss was a green-horn that had to put his foot down and leave no uncertainty as to who the OWNER and BOSS was.
Hue sealed his own fate. And he knew it. Almost said as much in regretful interviews after he was canned.
You mess with the bull, you get the horns.

Also, wanted to add, this talk of Hoyer or Johnson as QB acquisitions is silly. Neither are system fits firstly. In order to upgrade the roster, especially at this time of year (a week from game 1) you need players that can hit the ground running — they know the system, they’ve played before under a coach, etc.
Secondly, Josh Johnson has failed to impress the coaches at every team he’s been at. Hasn’t been able to pick up the nuances of the playbook/system. Plus, what’s the point in bringing him in say to replace Pryor, when he doesn’t know the system, has to start all over, and where Pryor in fact can be anything, his first stint at an NFL team and has shown marked improvement with his first training camp. Basically, Pryor is a far better ceiling than Johnson, if you count them both as dual-threat QBs. Pryor already looks poised to take over the #2 job sometime this year, you can just tell he’s really absorbing the playbook, improving his fundamentals etc.
As for Hoyer, completely different offensive system they run in New England, called the Erhardt-Perkins offense. You can read about it here…

Alright, some of you people are clueless on here. We are not talking about an overhaul of our roster, we are talking about upgrading a few back up positions to strengthen our DEPTH! FB

This year
Reece just as good, maybe better and Schmitt much better blocker at FB, Raiders haven’t had since Jon Ritchie.
September 1st, 2012 at 9:37 am
Hightower isn’t an upgrade over Goodson tho, he hasn’t recovered well from his ACL injury. His knee flares up after some running, playing. Why he got cut.
September 1st, 2012 at 9:39 am
Autumn
I think this is Barksdale last season to prove himself, Nix just might be that guy; has the frame to add weight if needed, has the talent, raw, not sure if the Raiders are projecting him at guard or tackle;
OT will definately be a priority in next years draft.
Vehldeer & Barnes just might be the best bookends in the NFL.
September 1st, 2012 at 9:40 am
Hightower doesn’t play much special teams either, especially with a busted knee.
So he would HAVE TO be better carrying the ball over Goodson, just to break even as a roster spot.

If it’s good enough for Ray Lewis, it is good enough for me.
==================================================
When you think of Raven intimidation, their offense doesn’t exaactly come to mind. It’s their defense that’s been intimidating.
But I get what you’re saying. And I agree their offense does play hard nosed ball. (Wish we’d have signed McLain, be nice to have one guy with that name that can beast)
Also understand that the ZBS can be very effective and it’s not puzzy ball.
Still say it ain’t RAIDER ball.
I agree that rule changes have made an over reliance on man to man, bump/press coverage impractical and Al was slow and reluctant to admit/realize this.
And although I admit the ZBS can be effective, I do not think that means that straight ahead power blocking can’t be.
To me, straight ahead, man to man, power blocking is RAIDER football.
Guess you had to live through the glory years to appreciate that the Raids once had their own distinctive style – and on offense, the power blocking OLine was a centerpiece of that identity.
I’d prefer to try to build in that direction again, instead of going ZBS.
But to each his own.

One of my frustrations with the Raiders (org and fanbase) is the low standard of play that is tolerated from highly paid players.
We should have the same expectations for Carson, DMAC and Huff as one would have for Ryan, McCoy and Reed

Knapp degraded into predictability. Why his offenses struggle. Armchair Coaches like us are onto him, think how much actual DCs are onto him then.
We saw the staple of his offense in the pre-season, which is 3/5’s of 3rd and long being a draw play, 1/5 a deep pass, and 1/5 a screen.
September 1st, 2012 at 10:25 am
Scheme plays a role to be sure. The defensive scheme the last few years are atrocious and the preparation was bad.
However, these “elite” players have to make a doggone play too.
The Raiders have enough difference makers on both sides of the ball to make the playoffs regardless of ZBS, 3-4, whatever.

Our offensive skill positions are full of dynamic players. They need dynamic play-calling to better utilize their ability to execute and perform. If you show your hand so much with scripted play-calling that Knapp seems to do, or just are afraid to be aggressive, the players end up looking like they can’t play well. Good play-calling is like being a magician, deception/sleight of hand is key. How many times have we been able to ‘tell’ what a play is going to be pre-snap?

Good quick example…
The Cowboys run a lot of draw plays, but a lot of the time they involve the QB making either a drop-back from under center, keying a receiver, then handing the delay. Or, nuances like a one-step drop, turning to the Z receiver, quick pump-fake like it’s a screen or quick-hit, then handing the delay off. Hue/Saunders used a few of these last season with good success, and not telegraphed on 3rd and long but on 1st or 2nd down.

One more thing before I go…
While pre-season Knapp isn’t going to open the playbook, the point of preseason still is for the starters/players to execute the plays, the bread and butter plays well. To win, and look good on offense, scoring and compiling long drives ‘at will’.
But the offense has looked clued in by the defense most of the time, except when Pryor went nuts in that Lions game. The defense has been able to neutralize all of the pre-designed roll-outs, bust up most of the screens, keep a handle on the receivers’ true-WCO short horizontal routes, busting up passes, clogging up the zones, etc.
All I’m saying is against the Chargers, DA/Knapp hopefully install a bunch of plays for the gameplan that are more intricate and Knapp hopefully calls a more unpredictable first half.
Obviously will give Knapp the fairness of seeing what he does in real games before disavowing him, but we have to come out of the blocks this season.

Halving the penalty total from last year will lead to wins.
DMAC staying healthy for at least 12 games leads to wins
Carson playing up to his pay leads to wins.
Knapp will run plays that get receivers open and it will be Carson’s job to hit them.
Knapp will run plays with gaps open for DMAC to run through, his job is to make the 2nd level guy miss.
Seymour and Kelly need to keep linebackers clean, and Huff and Branch need to patrol the secondary. McClain, if he’s not suspended, needs to play like a top 10 pick.
Raiders shouldn’t miss the playoffs.

—————————————————
you have a right to be skeptical about Knapp, i too am concerned about his history. i just disagree about the importance of preseason games . i dont see any relationship historically that teams who won games and racked up points in preseason went on to win super bowls. its completely different from regular season. Im not a fan of the ZBS, but at this point my hope is the talent of mcfadden and the fact that Carson was a pro bowl QB at one time will generate positive results offensively. If it was my choice I would have hired saunders but i hoping Knapp does a good job with the talent he has been given.

The Dallas Cowboys will blame the quarterback. The Oakland Raiders will need a new quarterback. The New York Jets quarterback is a running back and will lead the team to the playoffs.
Now that I have your attention, here are nine bold predictions for the upcoming season:
1) Carson Palmer won’t finish the season as the Raiders’ quarterback.
When Palmer was in Cincinnati, I called him the “human Jugs machine” for his incredible accuracy. Now, the former sharp shooter is reduced to having a water gun for an arm. Palmer was terrible last season for the Raiders. He’s been awful this preseason. Frankly, he was wretched at the end in Cincy. This is Hue Jackson’s parting gift. Matt Leinart knows Greg Knapp’s offense, as they spent the last two years together in Houston. Terrelle Pryor gives Oakland sizzle. Those two will prove to be better options, and Oakland will bring in a new quarterback for 2013. Bag

I know you’ve only experienced the mostly bad years – but to state that Knapp had the same level of success as the great Al Davis is pure insanity.

Over the past 10 years was what I was discussing/comparing.
Not at all over their careers obviously.

Only question is whether we signed him to the roster or the PS. If it’s to the roster, then I assume he’ll replace Nix.

I checked in Wikipedia, and it looks like he was only in a few games last year, so he’d be PS-eligible.

From Bill Williamson:
In other AFC West notes:
It’s interesting that Oakland has kept punter Marquette King. He was put on injured reserve with a toe injury. If star punter Shane Lechler leaves after the season as a free agent, perhaps King can be groomed. King is not NFL ready, but he has a live leg and he has potential.

………….
Not sure who wrote that but this is the direction that we seem to be headed in.
It’s all on Palmer at this point, make or break. No excuses will be tolerated by the new regime during his one year try out

Crawford is really strong and athletic. He played with Wiz at Penn State and Wiz recommended him.
Hard to say how good a football player he is since he didn’t grow up with the sport in England.
If he played any rugby growing up then he certainly knows how to smack guys around.

I read somewhere that he was in Detroit from the 9th grade on.
