Raiders sign three free agents, cut three from 53-man roster

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, September 1st, 2012 at 11:20 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders signed offensive tackle Willie Smith, linebacker Keenan Clayton and cornerback Philip Adams on Saturday, one day after they pared their roster to 53 players.
They waived cornerbacks Chimdi Chekwa and Bryan McCann and waived/injured defensive tackle Jamie Cumbie to make room for the aforementioned trio on the 53-man roster.
Clayton appeared in 21 games for the Philadelphia Eagles over the past two seasons. Adams played in 21 games for the 49ers, New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. Clayton started one game. Adams has no starts as an NFL player.
Smith appeared in four games for the Redskins last season, of which three he started. He is 6-foot-6 and 310 pounds.
The Raiders have not announced any roster moves since they pared 22 players from the 75-man roster in reaching compliance with the league-mandated maximum of 53 on Friday night.
For every player signed from here on out, the Raiders are required to release a player from their roster.
In other news, look for the Raiders to begin signing players to their practice squad today. Teams are permitted to sign as many as eight players to their practice squad.
Likely candidates include linebackers Nathan Stupar and Chad Kilgore, defensive tackle Dominique Hamilton, wide receivers Derek Carrier and Travionte Session and kicker Eddy Carmona.

    @rezinator

Yup no player editing, no fantasy draft, the draft sucks now, trading is confusing, you can’t change your coaching scheme mid career, and so on, and so on….There’s a lot of changes this year. I’m not sold on any of them so far.

I don’t play franchise mode offline. For madden 13 franchise online mode, they now have a salary cap, a make believe Twitter feed. But just the overall game play is better. Corner backs actuallytry to play the ball, gang tackling, and coverages are now hidden. You van no longer motion your receivers to read coverages.

  • oakfoshow

Raiderdick, didnt i tell you to stfu already snapperhead?

  • Thec

    Willie Smith

    2011 season

On July 28, 2011, the Washington Redskins signed Smith as an undrafted free agent.[3] Due to the suspension of Trent Williams, Smith played his first professional game in Week 14 of the 2011 season, rotating the left tackle position with Sean Locklear.[4] In Week 15 against the New York Giants, he would start his first game instead of Locklear.[5] He continued to start as the left tackle for the rest of the 2011 season. Smith has received praise for his ability to defend against elite pass rushers Jason Pierre-Paul, Jared Allen, and Trent Cole, despite being a rookie.[6]

    2012 season

During 2012 training camp, Smith split snaps at right tackle with Tyler Polumbus and Maurice Hurt after Jammal Brown was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.[7] He was released on August 31, 2012 for final cuts before the start of the 2012 season.[8]

That sucks, editing players is huge for me. Thanks for the heads up Aviontheone

Cork has flat-out stated that firing Hue was all Mark Davis’ call. Cork has the utmost confidence in that fact based on sources within the organization. Mark doing that could be for a lot of reasons, but since Mark almost always takes a hands-off approach on the football side of the business, they prob had little to do with Hue’s merits as a head football coach and more to do with something else such as wanting to put his own stamp on the team, wanting to eliminate those who had been in the org and may not take him as seriously as a new hire would, or maybe Hue personally irritated him for some reason.
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Very good post. Loved he guy, but he pissed me off with the Palmer trade. Too bad for Hue there’s a hell of a lot more to getting HC/OC jobs than merit. He’ll be fine. I liked Knapp during his 1st tour here. Losing him to Seattle was a big blow to JR’s career and to the team’s prospects until Al stepped in and hired Hue. I like the way this offense is looking now, just have serious concerns about the trigger man. No OC in the history of football can stop Palmer from ignoring safties over the top and just flinging the ball up like a dmbsht if that’s what he wants to do. We’ll just have to hold our breath and see what happens.

    Mistic,

I saw your last post on Geno Smith, who I always said I like becaue of his pocket presence, arm and size.

Yet, every draft thing I read on him lists his negative as not being an elite athlete, a stiff runner.

    What gives?

-33 rushing yards last year? Career high rush 17 yards? 0 rushing TD’s?
    ……….

He been hesitant to run didn’t want to be labled an athlete following pat white. He isn’t a speed burner but he is more the Gannon/ Campbell type. He can pick up that 3rd & 8 with his scrambling. He is putting on a hiesman show at the moment. 32/ 36 Over 300 yards 4 tds about 20 rushing yards. He said that he wants to use his legs now to run I stead of just looking to throw on scrambles now that he has clearly established that he is one of the best passers in the country.

Watch the games bra media reports are garbage

@67 I agree that this is the best game play that Madden has ever had. I still get Nano-blitzed and Money played to death online though. lol But gameplay wise this year blows away everything they have done before.

  • http://raiders.com Klas Tjorborn

Hue had delusions of grandeur. He wanted to be next Al Davis. Reggie and Mark would have clashed the titans big time.

I’m not sure if that’s true, I haven’t checked that yet. On online mode our commish has it disabled so I’m guessing you have the option to do it. One thing I do know is your players are no longer held back by potential grades. Any player can reach a 90+ overall rating

    ……

Agreed debo, losing knapp & flip destroyed Jamarcus, especially losing his uncle at the same time his mentor. Hujac was a hell of a play caller, but he went off the rails without Davis.

Davis & hujac needed one another. Davis neede hu jack because he could relate to players & put points in the board the raider way. Hu jack neede Davis to pick his players. Davis vetoed hujac trying to bring in Palmer & other bungle rejects.

Looks like coach Davis was right

  • da trinity

    Screw jamarcus

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

I don’t know if people realize this but not only has Palmer been the worst starter qb in the preseason he is actually looking up at guys like Curtis painter at the moment as even 2nd & 3rd stringers also badly out paler formed him this preseason.

I would say that is cause for concern

  • da trinity

Or coach is Allen, not hue.
    Get Ova It!!!!!!!

  • da trinity

    Curtis painter played against scrubs

  • http://reverbnation.com/avion Aviontheone

@80 you would think that the Raiders and Texans would have similar playbooks considering the Greg Knapp connection, but nope not at all.

  • oakfoshow

Carson is not a fit for westcoast.A decent regime would have known that from the start, and wouldnt have traded louis murphy for a 7th rounder.Bad decisions.very bad.

  • MiamiRaider78

Man, the time between now and the game is quite nerve racking.

We need to continually blitz, ‘Cry me’ a Rivers. I’m sure her worries about the offensive line play will linger right into Oakland and we should take advantage of that. Take his head off…

according from the l.a.times and the o.c. times tht mark davis president and the minority owner of the oakland raiders have been frquently back and forth in the l.a. area trying to negoitiate a joint partnership with the l.a. dogders organization and with ed roski owner founder and the builder of the world famous staples center on a joint state of the art football/baseball stadium rite next door to the lakers venue.it has been reported that both parties involved are in heavily in talks trying to work out all the kinks and probably will have a final proposal at the end of this fall.HAHA,now im going to have the lakers, raiders, only twenty minutes from my house!EXCELLENTTTTT….gotta love l.a.
