Raiders finalize practice squad
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, September 2nd, 2012 at 11:44 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Here’s a belated copy of the release the Raider sent out earlier this evening about completing their practice squad:
The Raiders filled out their eight-player practice squad Sunday, signing four players to join the four added on Saturday.
CB Chimdi Chekwa, DT Vaughn Meatoga, C Colin Miller and RB Jeremy Stewart were signed to the practice squad. The four players signed to the practice squad on Saturday were LB Kaelin Burnett, WR Brandon Carswell, WR Travionte Session and LB Nathan Stupar.
Chekwa (6-0, 194) was waived on Friday in the Raiders’ active-roster reduction to 53 players. He played in four games for the Silver and Black after joining the team as a fourth-round (113th overall) draft pick in 2011.
Meatoga (6-1, 295) was in training camp with the Cincinnati Bengals, signing as a non-drafted free agent out of Hawaii. He played in 52 games over four collegiate seasons.
Miller (6-3, 300), who played in four preseason games with the Raiders, was also waived on Friday. The first-year player was in training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2011.
Stewart (5-11, 215) was in training camp with the New York Jets. He originally signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as a non-drafted free agent out of Stanford.
Teams can establish a practice squad of up to eight players that are free agents who do not have an accrued season of free agency credit or who were on the 46-player active list for less than nine regular-season games during their only accrued season(s). A player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than three seasons.

You don’t have to learn Spanish. Mexican customers used to come in and act like they don’t speak English, and ask for a Spanish speaking salesman (thinking they will get a better deal). I used to tell them that I can get one, but I’m the guy who can give them a better deal (owners cousin/ son/ brother/ etc). They spoke English!

Cumbie is on injured reserve. He was waived/injured yesterday and passed through waivers and was put on IR today. Since he passed through waivers, does that allow him to be activated once healthy this year?
September 3rd, 2012 at 12:00 am
the practice squad is never finalized. It will almost certainly change many times this year, either by Raiders changing it and/or another team signing PS members to their active rosters

Not sure what I think about RB Stewart…

Wiz is fine , Coach said in 3rd preseason game that he could have went if it was a real game , WIZ is a tough kid as well , he’s not going to allow a freaking 1 injury to keep him out of real games

Anyone keeping up with the Boltz? Jared Gaither, he of the “not ready for prime time players” in pre-season last year hasn’t practiced one day for the (dis)Chargers since being diagnosed with “muscle spasms (sound familiar?)” in his back.
Last year when the Raiders bested the Chargers in SD McNeil went down with a neck injury & the LT position was a revolving door. Shonasty wasn’t available due to his season ending shoulder injury.
Now Shonasty’s back, playing in front of the home crowd on opening night/Monday Night Football. A rookie will be lining up for the (dis)Chargers.
Result? Well, can’t give much solace for Phillip Rivers. . .

Let’s hope so.
It would seem the matchup of the SD OL vs. the Raid DL favors the Raids.
Rivers should go down. Early, often and hard.
But if it doesn’t happen, all the people here that are fond of saying ‘Kam Wimbley was a one trick pony and will not be missed’ will have pause for thought.
If the Raids can’t exploit the mismatch and punch Phyliss in her mouth, it could result in a long night – and be foreboding of greater trouble down the line when facing stouter offensive lines.
September 3rd, 2012 at 4:43 am
So the towel hasnt been thrown yet on Chekwa. I’m surprised Carswell is on the PS, although his mistakes looked like DHB in his first season. Overall I liked who the new Reggime brought in, minus berg & briesel. They need to improve from what I saw in preseason. 7 more days till kickoff!!

So the under on my over/under of .5 on week 1 starters we add in FA looks like a lock.
LOL at people thinking we were going to add MULTIPLE starters in FA, a week before the season starts.
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:06 am
If Hanson is added to the roster, who gets cut? It would have to be one of Adams or Francies, right? Probably Adams because to me, Coye has more upside being a potential 2 rounder that dropped due to off field issues.
I bet, if healthy, Hanson is signed because I think he was cut over money, not performance.

Was reading some more of the SI football preview.
Picked the Chiefs to win the division. However every team they have 3 kind of odd-ball stats on the teams and here is the Chiefs:
1) 1 out 10: Rate of sacks on 4th quarter dropbacks by opposing QB’s, 2nd highest in the league, behind the Rams.
2) 83.5 : % of plays Dexter McCluster lined up in the backfield so far in his career. Chiefs plan to use him exclusively as a WR this season.
(Good luck with that!!!)
3) 9 : Number of TD’s allowed by new CB STan Routt, highest in the NFL. 2nd on the list, other CB Brandon Flowers.
So they have the two DB’s in the NFL who gave up the most passing TD’s in the league last year, with a gimmick guy planning to play WR, and the worst QB in the division, and SI thinks they are going to win the division??
Not happening!!!!
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:09 am
#33, starters added a week before our first game???
What position is so weak that people thought any joe could start?
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:12 am
According to a Eagles blog I just read, Hanson played really well in 2009, signed a contract extension, than tested positive for performance enhancers and has sucked ever since.

TE and LB were the main ones.
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:16 am
PFF also put out a study of worst blitzing DB’s over the last 3 years.
Hanson was dead last in the NFL, for whatever that is worth.
2 total pressure from 107 blitzes
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:18 am
If we don’t make more roster moves, I have to say I’m moderately satisfied with the pick-ups.
In order of relevance.
OT Willie Smith:
Started the final 4 games at LT for the Redskins last year and gave up three sacks, 10 hits, and seven hurries, not the best numbers but considering he faced some of the League’s best pass rushers in Andre Carter (10 sacks), Jason Pierre Paul (16.5 sacks), Jared Allen (22 sacks) and Trent Cole (11 sacks) I think he held his own, specially for a Rookie.
This guy is an upgrade from Joe Barksdale both in experience and as a system fit, probably becomes the 3rd Tackle right away.
CB Phillip Adams:
Didn’t play much as rookie for SF in 2010, was injured and cut, in 2011 he played 5 games with NE as a Nickel CB and according to reports played ok but still got cut, in 2012 had a good camp and pre-season in Seattle and some of their writters were surprised he was cut, apparently he was beaten by veteran Marcus Trufant, also has some return skills.
CB Coyie Francies:
Not much info on this guy, former 6th round pick by Cleveland played some games in 2009 and has been in and out of the League since then, he was also with Seattle for this year’s training camp and pre-season, apparently he showed some decent cover skills and one of their writters even said he might the be the most polished cover man outside their starters, still went out in the first cut, didn’e even make it to the final one, not sure what they see in him, Adams was better in Seattle, also has some return skills, maybe that’s it but I think he’s a goner soon, maybe for Joselio Hanson or some other CB.
OLB Keenan Clayton:
The one guy who has not played much, former 4th round pick in 2010 with speed and coverage skills as a former College Safety, I think he fills a need since our LB back-ups (Goethel, Nacho) can’t cover, should play ST’s too.
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:24 am
Some idiot on nfl network said that payton manning never had weapons like he has on denver. jeff saturday, reggie wayne, marvin harrison, dallas clark , edgeran james.
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:24 am
Marley, I like the moves too. Reggie added depth at positions of need with younger guys that can still improve.
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:25 am
I like the fact that Willie Smith (4 starts) and Phillip Adams (5 games as Nickel CB) saw some action last year and did not look out of place, they have more real reps than Barksdale and Chekwa, I know those guys were cut (Smith and Adams) so it’s not like we’re bringing Pro-Bowl quality players but I think the bottom of the roster got a bit better.
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:27 am
Question now becomes, who are our inactives going to be on Monday night?
I wouldn’t be suprised to see DVD as one, since he doesn’t contribute on ST like the other DB’s do.
Barksdale as well could be there, probably Jacoby for the first week or two.
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:28 am

Someone made the observation that when DVD gets beat, it’s almost always on the first cut the WR makes. Can’t be doing that against slot guys – that will lead to TDs.
Good move by the Raiders to bring in a veteran nickel specialist.

Pro Football Focus
“Hanson was on the field for 221 snaps last season according to ProFootballFocus.com, allowing 26 receptions in the 43 times he was targeted.
While those numbers are not awful, Hanson allowed more touchdown catches (4) than any other slot corner back in the league. Hanson also came up with no interceptions, and quarterbacks had a rating of over 100 when throwing his direction.
ProFootballFocus.com had him ranked as the 19th best slot cornerback in the league.”

September 3rd, 2012 at 6:49 am
From an Eagles insider website:
“In cutting Hanson, one of the NFL’s best slot cornerbacks, the team opened the door for rookie, fourth-round cornerback Brandon Boykin to play inside against slot receivers in the nickel and dime.
The move is surprising given Hanson’s reputation and experience and that head coach Andy Reid has said throughout training camp that Hanson had the edge, although Reid recently said Boykin had bridged the gap.
Hanson didn’t play much early last year as the team tried to accommodate the additions of outside corners Nnadmi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to complement corner Asante Samuel.
The defense struggled with Rodgers-Cromartie playing out of position inside and didn’t regroup until Hanson went back to the slot corner by December.”
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:55 am
Look, Hanson didn’t have a gret year in 2011 and still ranked 19th in Slot CB rankings, he’s going to help.
Slot CB is a difficult position to play, you are always in traffic and face a ton of targets without much help, those guys will never match outside CB’s efficiency ratings.
Playing the Slot requires a unique skill set, not every CB can do it and Hanson has made a career out of it, I welcome the signing with open arms.
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:55 am
The reason Vince Young has been cut 3 time is his inability to learn the playbooks and break down film. Rather keep Leinert and Pryor. Pryor has Vince Youngs skillset but is far more gifted in the study dept.

The thing about stats is it can be misleading to a point. example, 3rd and 15 you let reciever catch ball for 10 yards and make the tackle, thats a good play, make them punt. Now because he let them catch the ball ,the completion percent goes up on balls throw his way.

Apparently Hanson was doing just fine this pre-season, according to another philly blog, they just decided to go with their draft pick, no shocker as the Eagles usually let players go as soon as they acquire a younger, cheaper guy who they think can fill his shoes.
“The biggest shocker to me is the cut of CB Joselio Hanson, who played lights out during the preseason as the designated slot cover guy…”.

DB position gets an upgrade now that we have a true Slot CB.
Bartell and Spencer outside with Hanson as the 3rd CB makes for 3 experienced vets and it pushes back any plans of Huff playing Nickel CB with Gio at FS, Huff may still see action as 4th CB in Dime packages if nobody else steps up.
Very solid move by Reggie and one we were all expecting.

Fit what Al liked to do on defense, as well – very good in man coverage. But of course, Al went with the fastest player at the combine rather than Brown, who ran a 4.5.

DVD wasn’t going to be starting anywhere.
The Raiders picked up a 7-year vet who is known for his ability to play in the slot.
I’d be more worried if the plan was to go into the opener with DVD matched up against Eddie Royal. He’d get himself D’Angeloed.

I think Raiders are making some great moves. I did like DVD, he could not cover nor tackle. One time he was trying to tackle and it took a couple more Raiders to come over help take the player down. Only thing I am now concerned with is the PS, I feel we kept one too many receivers and should have placed Cormona on PS, he has a strong leg in case SeaBass gets hurt.
