It’s official, DVD waived, Hanson signed
By Steve Corkran
Monday, September 3rd, 2012 at 10:35 am in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders confirmed the waiving of second-year cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke and the signing of veteran cornerback Joselio Hanson on Monday.
What’s more, Hanson is practicing today, wearing No. 29. He is projected as a nickel corner, someone capable of covering the slot receiver, much as he did with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Hanson is one of six new cornerbacks on Oakland’s roster this year. It’s worth noting that Oakland’s top five cornerbacks from 2011 are gone: Stanford Routt (Chiefs), Chris Johnson (unsigned), Lito Sheppard (unsigned), Van Dyke (free agent) and Chimdi Chekwa (Raiders practice squad).
The other new cornerbacks on Oakland’s roster are: Phillip Adams, Coye Francies, Ron Bartell, Shawntae Spencer and Pat Lee.
– Adams is wearing No. 28, linebacker Keenan Clayton No. 57, cornerback Coye Francies No. 31 and offensive tackle Willie Smith No. 79.
– Center Stefen Wisniewski returned to practice after being sidelined since Aug. 13 with a calf injury he suffered against the Dallas Cowboys.
However, it was Alex Parsons working with the first-team offense and Colin Miller with the second-team offense.
– Wide receivers Denarius Moore (hamstring) and Jacoby Ford (foot) and linebacker Aaron Curry (knees) are not practicing. Curry and Moore worked with a team trainer at the start of practice, off to the side. Ford wasn’t spotted doing any working out.
– Defensive tackle Richard Seymour practiced for the first time since he appeared in a game against the Arizona Cardinals on Aug. 17. He has been sidelined with a sore knee.
– Wide receiver Juron Criner is at practice. However, it’s obvious that he is at less than full strength. He ran pass routes but he appeared to be limping quite a bit. We shall seek an update from coach Dennis Allen in 90 minutes or so.
– Today is Oakland’s first practice since Aug. 28. It also marks the beginning of preparation for the San Diego Chargers in earnest, with the regular-season opener a week from today.
The Raiders practice today and Tuesday, before taking a day off Wednesday. They return for practices Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Goodson won’t get dumped because Reggie made an awful trade giving up a physical freak of an olineman for a dime-a-dozen RB with fumbilitis. Cutting Goodson is admitting RM screwed up on that move, which everyone already knows, but still.
As for the ongoing immediate production vs longterm potential debate … it shouldn’t be one or the other. It should be about finding a balance between the two. For me, guys like DVD and Bruce Campbell are worth holding onto to develop in hopes they can be special, differemce-making players. You need players who can play now, but I wouldn’t sacrifice potentially great players just to have a mediocre roster with little to no hope of greatness. It’s a recipe where average is the best-case scenario.
Not a philosophy Al Davis would have much use for. I myself don’t get it. But. Apparently that’s how Reggie McKenzie rolls.-
______________________________
We did put in claim for that RB from Giants that was waived, you can’t just cut a player without having his replacement in there, that would be stupid, i know Reg and the team is still scouring the Waiver list to find a good back up running back or a replacement for Goodson, so Goodson better perform because he’s on the hot seat
September 3rd, 2012 at 10:39 am
Good job Reggie. DVD hasn’t produced anything positive in a real game. I wonder how many of Al’s guys did Reggie cut?
September 3rd, 2012 at 10:40 am
wow. “It’s worth noting that Oakland’s top five cornerbacks from 2011 are gone…”
That’s one way to fix the 27th ranked defense.
Bravo to bold and logical moves that Al would have never made.

Dang, DVD couldn’t even make it as a return guy? Taking into account drafts from previous years too (Wear, Brown, W. McFadden and so on), Oakland has had terrible luck trying to get half decent corners. All those lost draft picks… Funny how the Mitchell pick that was widely mocked at the time is one of the few guys that have made it this far.

Another dumb post from you, DVD is at least another year away from becoming above average, he needs to put on atleast 10-15 more pounds and get stronger , the guy gets bowled over like bowling pins, trading Murphy was good move because we seemed to have depth and we got an extra pick for some one who might have been waived for nothing , yah we could have used him now because of our injuries, but when all of our receivers are healthy , there is no place for him
September 3rd, 2012 at 10:44 am

Goodson, in 2010:
103 carries, 452 yards, 4.4 avg, 3 TDs, 2 fumbles lost.
40 catches, 310 yards, 0 fumbles,
48 kick returns, 1048 yards.
age: 25
salary: veteran minimum
That’s not easy to find in a waiver-wire player.

Jacoby Ford fumbles at almost twice the rate for his career than Goodson has.
September 3rd, 2012 at 10:48 am

September 3rd, 2012 at 10:48 am
DHB and Streater have a lot of pressure on them. We are lucky the Chargers have some key players out on offense, too.
September 3rd, 2012 at 10:49 am
Considering the cap problems and dearth of draft picks Reggie had to work with, it’s a little difficult to gauge where he’s going and grade him fairly.
His first priority was getting a coaching staff assembled.
Then he had to decide which players he wanted to retain and which had to go based largely on cap restrictions.
Next, he blew up the scouting department.
Then came the FA signings and the draft.
So, here’s are the major actions we need to consider when evaluating Reggies performance so far:
Hired DA. Tarver. Knapp.
Let Wimbley, Routt, Bush walk.
Brought in his brother and someone he was familiar with to revamp the scouting dept.
Decided to retool the interior of the OL by signing Breisel, drafting Bergs and letting Satele go.
Signed Wheeler and Bartell as key replacements on D.
Those are the major decisions and actions he’s taken so far, which will impact 2012 and beyond.
I’ll leave it to the semi’s here to grade his performance so far.

It wouldn’t preclude some from signing new deals next year, but the position group will need to be addressed with the long term in mind.

DVD has potential, and only in his second year, now we have 3 veteran corners on one year deals. Who is going to play corner next year, Pat Lee… Please. September 3rd, 2012 at 11:06 am
DVD might just be this year’s Sterling Moore.
Hard to gauge RegMac this season on his FA signings, yet, basically was dealt the cards to mostly sign second string talent and lower-tiered draft choices.
Will take a first look at how his draft does in how Burris and Criner play given the circumstances of starting ahead of injured players. So far, Rod Streater, as an unsigned FA, looks like his winner in the pre-season, I’m sure he will continue to play dink and dunk with Palmer.
His real test is how he will deal with high-salaried veteran players who continue to be unproductive dragging the ship down with heavy ballast.

“Stroud writes that Blount was fined more than $15,000 for repeatedly showing up late to practice. His tardiness became so common that eventually the team arranged for him to hire a car service with a driver who would wake him up in the morning and bring him to the team’s practice facilities. After that worked for a few weeks the Bucs figured Blount could cancel the car service because he had figured out what time he needed to get up and get going to get to practice on time. And then Blount was late again on the very first day the car service was canceled. And so they re-ordered it for Blount, and a car and driver kept taking him to practice in 2010 and in 2011. And even when he sleeps in, Blount still apparently needs more sleep, because he also has a history of falling asleep in team meetings.”

DVD had great attributes to be a good CB, but no awareness/intuition. All he did was follow the WR everywhere he went, then tackle him once the WR made the catch. Not once did I see him anticipate a pass or look for the ball in the air.
Do you guys remember the ball hitting him on the helmet because he has his back to the QB the ENTIRE time. For most CBs, you talk about how many INTs they dropped because of poor hands. For DVD, you tal about how many INTs hit his back…

As long as Streater is playing well, there is no extreme urgency to rush Moore back into service.
It is better to allow him to fully recover and hope to avoid the injury lingering all year.
Not what we want to hear, obviously we’d like DMoore out there. But this is more of a marathon than it is a sprint.
If it takes another few weeks to get his wheel back, regain his timing with CP, and get back to game speed – that’s just something we’re going to have to accept.

Except clearly DA expects his #4 or 5 corner to contribute on special teams.
They tried DVD out as a return man before the final preseason game, and it never materialized. It’s not like DVD wasn’t given chances to get on the field.
If you’re too much of a liability to be a backup at a thin position group, and you can’t get on the field in other ways, then all the upside in the world won’t necessarily keep you on a team.

They’re definitely going to be running the ball a lot. But when you put an RB on the field who can’t catch the ball and make something happen, it tips the defense off to your play design.
I also don’t think Blount does anything on special teams, which doesn’t help his case if he’s going to be a #4 RB. That’s another reason I like Bell. He’s used to contributing on special teams.
September 3rd, 2012 at 11:35 am
If the 1st string O Line can get plays blocked properly, the combo of DMAC, Jones, and Goodson all offer explosive play opportunities in both facets running and receiving.
I’d like a Clydesdale in the mix, but if we factor potential injury, the 3 backs we have would offer the best “seamless” fit if someone goes down.
September 3rd, 2012 at 11:35 am

Considering the cap problems and dearth of draft picks Reggie had to work with, it’s a little difficult to gauge where he’s going and grade him fairly.
…Then he had to decide which players he wanted to retain and which had to go based largely on cap restrictions.
:::::::::::::::::::::::
According to RegMac interviews, his priority is to get the cap and the draft how he wants it to be. In the mean time, it SEEMS that he is signing the best quality players that fit in his budget to short term contracts and letting them play to stay.
I ASSUME that the ones that rise to the top will be rewarded once the books are in order and it will be clear where FA’s and draft pics are needed to move the team fwd.
However, the expectations (reasonable hopes) don’t change.
2012-13: 9 wins or bust (playoffs)
2013-14: playoffs or bust (division)
2014-15: division or bust (AFC champ game)
2015-16: AFC champ game or bust (SB)
Of course, overachievement is acceptable

It will probably take some extremely unfortunate circumstances for the Raiders to sign a new RB.

I would have switched Branch to starting FS, Mitchell as starting SS, moved Huff to CB, Bartell as other starting CB, Spencer as Nickel, then considered some waivers and cost cutting before slapping Al’s choices to the curb. Glad Chimdi is still in the mix, he did almost shutdown Plexico last year but he’s gonna be stolen off the practice squad soon . Keeping an unhappy player around can be detrimental to the team. Not saying this was definitely the case, or that Murphy was vocal about his displeasure, because I’m not in that locker room. But it’s something to consider.
Personally, I think cutting Parrish was a little bit of a rash decision – but maybe he was never in the long-term plans from the get-go. Who knows.

Anyone here play on a team with a guy that had great physical skills in general, but you new that they were not really a Baller?
I experienced that many times.
It sometimes took a few practices, but it always played out.
The guy looked the part, but lacked the essential qualities. Heart, desire, work ethic, toughness, an understanding of the nuances…etc
September 3rd, 2012 at 12:15 pm
Murphy needed a change of scenery badly, it seemed. Even if he has some success elsewhere, I’m not sure he could have been nearly the same player that he was his first couple seasons if he stayed in Oakland.

As recounted at the time, on here and by the pundits, DVD was the consummate Al reach, an inexplicable, head scratching move that nobody understood at the time. DVD was an admitted project, a guy who might not even have been drafted, and Al took him in the second round for chrissakes. At the time, I stated right here that this pick was emblematic of everything that was wrong with the franchise. Those of us who have been insisting for years that this kind of schit had to stop won’t rub in the old regime’s defenders face by saying we told you so.

It’s a great day to be a Raiders fan. Isn’t it?!
Goodbye DVD — Class way to say goodbye.
There’s no way ReggieMac WANTED to cut DVD. It’s not an accident he was one of the last Players cut. If no other Team picks him off the heap, it would not be a surprise to see him back in Silver & Black fairly soon.
Anybody saying DVD is done is waaaaay premature. He’ll play somewhere this year…and he’ll keep improving, like good young Players do. A year from now — if he still doesn’t “get it” — THAT’S probably the right time to say he just won’t develop into a top-quality NFL Player.
Right now, he’s more inexperienced and immature than he is dumb (as some in here like to call him)…but one thing is for certain: DVD can run with, and cover, world-class WR’s. He may not be a great DB, but there really isn’t a reason he cannot be one. Nothing replaces experience.
What DVD needs (besides a Team): A little more weight, a lot more coaching, and most importantly — the proverbial switch must flip “on” for him. Only then do young DB’s develop the confidence they need to succeed at this level. It says here DVD will succeed, even if not for Oakland.

Yes you draft players based on a potential , if you draft a guy high and struggles he gets a leeway for maybe a year or 2 and then they finally cut him, if it’s a guy that was drafted pretty late , then the guy didn’t have much potential anyways and you give him chance to prove he can do it, the guy was given every chance in games , he just couldn’t do it .. so they cut him for some one who could do it better than him this year

Of course not. Player development using the draft is the key to long term success.
DVD was not worth the investment of resource, apparently.
If you make a mistake in the draft, it’s far better to recognize and move on than to waste time at the expense of the team.
September 3rd, 2012 at 12:53 pm
There is no such thing as projects in today’s NFL, outside of QB’s.
You either play well, or excel on Special teams, go to the practice squad (DVD was not eligible) or wait for the inevitable call from the front office telling you to get lost.

September 3rd, 2012 at 12:54 pm
We haven’t seen improvement anywhere yet.
We (most of us, anyway) are hoping ReggieMac has the magic formula — which includes an awful lot of luck, BTW — just to keep us competitive for the AFCW this year. (I think we will be at the top of the AFCW as long as we’re healthy — Peyton notwithstanding.)
GM’s who don’t own their Teams get fired when projects don’t pan-out. GM’s who don’t try to “win now” get fired when they don’t. ReggieMac can’t afford not to try to win now — using guys who are ostensibly ready to play now.
BUT! If those guys are no better than Journeymen, who perform no better than 2nd-year “projects,” I’d rather keep the kids around.
I like MOST of Reggie’s moves…even adding the new DB. Even though I don’t agree with losing DVD, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and hope he’s right.

A lot of these guys getting cut and PS’d had a golden opportunity, provided by Davis, to show that they could get it done. Many were drafted a little high and had the potential that Al saw in them.
There is a new regime in town. Good players can shine no matter what…especially on a team lacking the depth the Raiders do in certain positions.
Those guys that are getting cut, released, etc…they can’t play. The Raiders will be better for it

There is no such thing as projects in today’s NFL, outside of QB’s.
You either play well, or excel on Special teams, go to the practice squad (DVD was not eligible) or wait for the inevitable call from the front office telling you to get lost.
—
Well said , unless the guy has out of this world potential then a team might keep him and give him a chance , but if you’re a middle round pick and don’t have that much potential , it just doesn’t send the right message to the rest of the team to keep that guy over guys who could do better that year or performed better in games

Have to say I am encouraged by all of our new talent at Corner…better late than never they say….
I do question the timing though….
Been saying the entire off season that this position was our biggest need….we for some reason ignored the position in the draft….yet it ends up being the position with the most turnover…
I only wish we could have made these moves sooner so there weren’t so many players running around with information regarding our scheme….however, judging from DVD tweet’s….we have nothing to worry about…

dvd as a project was more suited to al’s type of defense. i’m not sold that he would have ever turned into a lock down corner bc his while his technique was bad he didnt have the aggressiveness in any aspect. he rarely made a tackle against the run and his instincts werent there. you can teach technique, but you cant get a heart transplant. DA system requires more than speed and its my guess he felt DVd would not evolve. i trust DA on this one bc he is a defensive minded coach with a specialty in CBs. my bigger concern is reggie didnt bring in enough talented corners for DA to work with and reggie needs to wake up and get some WRs in here.

DVD was the weakest DB in the 2011 draft and you cannot miss a tackle that you shy away from. He is not an NFL caliber CB, neither was Cheikwa, as evidenced by him landing on the practice squad. I think DHB and Mitchell will be the next roll and Tommy kelly close behind.

Are you special ed? His first two years were an abomination. He has not even grabbed 100 balls in three years.. That is not steady improvement.

Untii the Raiders get a legitimate number one receiver then the offense will sputter. Moore, Criner, Streater could fill that role before DHB. RM needs to continue the scholarship purge. DHB, although improve, is far from justifying a 3rd round pick.

David Amerson! My Vols touched him up 3 times Friday night! Even the backup WR torched him for a long TD! LOL! Wait until the college season is over before suggesting , we need to pick Codarrelle Patterson WR for UT 6′3 210 4.3 , the next great WR to come from Tennessee! He made NC State look like div 3 !

September 3rd, 2012 at 1:42 pm
Pretty sure the reason we scored a lot more points in 2010, had nothing to do with who the HC was, who was calling plays, what PRETTY MUCH THE SAME O-LINE was doing in their schemes, and about everything to do with McFadden breaking multiple tackles all the time.
And when you watch the replays of the 2010 game in Denver, some of the TD’s were on CLEAR zone plays.
The long Darren TD run, the throwback to Miller on the first drive.

um. didn’t reggie say the CB position had to be upgraded when he was hired? he overhauled it. well done. only 2 of the 6 LB’s on the roster were here last year and one was hurt. 3 new DL. and one was hurt last year. safeties are the same. so let’s see. of the 24 defensive players on the roster, 11 are left from last year’s horrendous defense and 13 are new. plus the return of 2 injured guys, so really 15 of the 24 are different. so what it is the complaint? sounds like he cleaned the fuking house!

Here’s the gameday highlights from that Denver game in 2010.
You can see the big run at the end for McFadden, and watch Satele run to go dive at the LB’s ankles.
Clear ZBS system in place, putting up the most points in a game in Raiders history.

If Palmer was 27 or 28, then maybe so. But if Carson can’t execute Knapp’s offense this year, I doubt the Raiders stick with a 33/34 yr old QB another year hoping for the upside.

You mean like throwing screen passes or quick sideline passes when the other team is all-out blitzing every play and is constantly in the backfield? I chastised people for trying to make too many conclusions about play calling during practice games, but man did the Seattle game give me deja vu back to 2008. Its frightening.
One frigging screen play the whole game from what I noticed.
Its almost like Knapp thinks screen plays never work or something… even though that’s all Brady ever threw winning his first SB ring.

cant wait to see how this year goes..Our Cbs last year were sooo bad. what did Reggie do, got rid of them all..good move ..but then he replaces them with a guy who p[layed 1 game in 2011, coming off two neck surgeries, and hasnt had an interception since 2008. Then he brings in spencer a 3rd down corner for most of his 9 years who never had more than 4 ints in a season. he then picks up 7 days before the season starts his slot corner who is ranked at the bottom at the league for slot defenders. all this while the free agency market for cbs was very deep. I don’t know if Seattle is the best example for the effectiveness of the ZBS…their strength is more defense…plus they’re coming off two straight 7-9 seasons.
But Houston? Yeah they use it and they are SB contenders according to alot of people.

That’s what GM’s do. They are constantly looking for ways to improve the team. I think as fans that know quite a bit about our team anyone here would say the team was woeful at CB, DL, and LB last season.
RMac is doing what anyone would expect the GM of a sports franchise to do. Make the necessary changes to improve the team.
