Reports: Raiders sign Hanson, to cut Van Dyke

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, September 3rd, 2012 at 7:53 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders have signed veteran cornerback Joselio Hanson, according to Philadelphia-based reporter Adam Caplan.

In a separate report, Profootballtalk.com reports cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke will be cut to make room for Hanson.

Hanson was released by the Philadelphia Eagles in their final cutdown to 53 players. He played for the Eagles for the last six seasons after beginning his career with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent.

He has played in 104 games with 19 starts with four career interceptions, with his biggest play of note a Week 17 87-yard return of a fumble against Dallas that helped put the Eagles in the playoffs.

Hanson reported visited the Raiders Sunday. They begin practice today in preparation for the season opener against the San Diego Chargers on Monday night, Sept. 10.

Van Dyke struggled during the preseason after as strong start during the first week and a half of training campp.

The Raiders completed their practice squad Sunday night with the signings of cornerback Chimdi Chekwa, defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga, center Colin Miller and running back Jeremy Stewart.

    ================

He had all the physical tools – yes, including fluid hips (although he wasn’t going to be taking down Marshawn Lynch in the open field any time soon). The downfall for most CBs is the inability to change direction quickly.

DVD had the ability, just none of the awareness. Told everyone he’d probably be a 3-year project if he was going to work out. Apparently McKenzie didn’t want to wait that long, and it’s hard to blame him.

DVD, Barksdale, Chekwa… the problem for me is that there were better players on the board that were passed on. Frustrating, but hopefully there are better days ahead.

DVD only did one thing, play the outside corner, and didn’t even do that well.

DVD will be fine guys he’s just getting the sme treatment Charles Wooson got his rookie year. By mid season that kid will be legit. He has the goods he has guys covered he just has to finish and he will. Al Davis knows a good DB when he sees one.

  54. Chris in NY Says:

DVD is going to be an elite CB in a few years time. Nothing against Hanson, but cutting DVD was a foolish move. Kid has a ton of upside. And nobody knew how to find hidden gem DBs like Al Davis.

I’m getting more and more nervous that McKenzie is basically turning the Raiders into a west coast version of the Rams, Bills or Jaguars. Basically, a nondescript lousy team.

I have serious doubts about the guy right now, but let’s see how it all shakes out. If we don’t make the playoffs this year, barring major injuries or something of that nature, there should be hell to pay.

DVD is going to be out of the league in a few years, if not sooner.

He can’t play, and DB is not really a “developmental” position.

You have to play well, or at least play ST’s if you are in the back end of the rotation.

    He does neither.

  57. Raiders for life Says:

I thought DVD caused a fumble during a punt last season?

  58. Stringer Bell Says:

The Seattle game was what did these guys in. The way Seattle’s backups torched ours forced Reggie to go out and find guys that could step in and play if needed. DVD might have had upside, but he still wasn’t ready to produce right now. The AFC West is wide open, and I for one would rather not wait around for DVD to develop and bring guys in that can help win the division this year.

These guys getting cut and PS’D can’t play right now. Potential belongs on the practice squad. Not on the 53 man roster getting inactivated each week.

Developmental QBs are the only “potential” inactive guys that should take up a roster spot. Or a guy like Michael Bush who was injured in college and dropped in the draft and needed time to heal

Corners, running backs etc, if you can’t play its either practice squad or a 9to5

Not sure I can agree about DVD being a potential elite CB, but agree that reggie hasnt done enough during the offseason with respect to our CB position. their were alot of quality cbs available and reggie brought in spencer who imo is a 3rd down corner at best and bartel who is a big question mark bc of injury. Just seems like Reggie is getting a pass and IMO we should make the playoffs and anything less is a failure. Manning must be licking his chops to putting 4 wrs on the field spreading us out and picking on our suspect Cbs..my hope is a healthy DMAC combined with a creative defensive focus developed by DA will override Reggies lack of personal moves

Who would have thought CJ37 getting hurt was so dire to this team.

DVD doesn’t even compete with the WR’s he is covering. He fails miserably at the eye-test.

Taiwan passes the eye test. Same with D Moore, and hell even Wiz 2.0

Get that guy off the field. It was obvious Brees tried to look elsewhere after the first drive, just to get some run at some other stuff.

IN a real game, they would have thrown 20 passes on DVD, and probably completed 17 of them.

add him and kick Leinart to the curb??
    ================================================
Wouldn’t say I’m a big fan of VY’s, but I do respect his ability. He’s obviously a head case and his professionalism and desire is highly suspect – but in the right circumstance, he could win games for you in a pinch. Matt Lice will not win games, under any circumstances.

Still don’t understand how Lice has a job just bcz he knows Krapp’s system. Thought Krapp was getting paid a million a year to design, implement, and teach his system.

In short, yes – I’d roll with VY instead of ML in a heartbeat.

If CP goes down, I roll with TP before I waste time on ML. If VY was on the roster instead of ML, I still might play TP instead of VY – but that would be a tougher call and would depend on if the Raids were in playoff contention.

Thoughts on DVD getting axed to come…

  78. 504 Raider Says:

To me DVD is basically what DHB was as a rookie minus the high draft status. DHB struggled catching the ball but he did make some plays and turned heads by blocking his butt off. And nobody said anything special about his work ethic.

BCZ is on fire! The problem with NA is he was not that good his first few years then good for a few years then we loose him to FA. We really did not get that much out of him and when we did it was when we had the Art Shell B and B offense and were rebuilding with Jbustus etc and those were lost years anyways.
Although he could cover he really did not get that many turnovers nor did we even use him properly to consistently take away a #1 reciever and put him in places to make plays. I have followed the Raiders for over 40 years and am thankful to AD for bringing many awesome players and teams to Oakland and LA but the last 10-15 years have been awful with the exception of Grudens time here and the year after Gruden when the players coached the team.

  95. RaiderLen Says:

    Happy Labor Day fellas.

So DVD kicked to the curb.

It appears as though Reg and DA are looking for DB’s that show some toughness, and can tackle.

An elite shut down corner is a rare commodity.

Even the elite get beat from time to time.

I’ll take a group of DB’s that can provide average ability in coverage, with an INT sprinkled in that are SURE tacklers.

It makes the entire Defense better overall.

It builds confidence and limits the deflating episodes created by missed tackles.

  96. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

DVD getting cut should NOT come as a surprise to anyone that watched the pre-season games.

His tackling ability is beyond pathetic. He is a puny gnat that gets swatted away with ease. He looks like a spitball bouncing off a battleship when attempting to tackle a TE.

His ONLY hope of making the roster would be if his coverage was good enough to overcome his tackling and weight deficiencies.

Problem is, his coverage was pathetic as well.

At first it seemed like he was tight in coverage but was lacking in ball awareness.

More recently, his coverage wasn’t even adequate.

This is a kid with terrific speed and pretty good athleticism. It is possible that if he bulks up, without losing too much speed, and once again shows an ability to mirror – he COULD be a decent player one day.

At best, he can be viewed as a project. A team with a deep secondary that can give him 2 years to bulk up and refine his coverage might eventually have something.

While it is unlikely that axing DVD will turn out to be a mistake that we will come to regret – it is possible.

Sometimes, you can kick a player to the curb and have absolutely no fear that he’ll come back to bite you.
JaMoron was a high profile example of this.

DVD might be OK one day, but it’s unlikely the Raids will severely regret today’s decision.

Now it’s time to pick up another RB and DUMP GOODSON.

He won’t be missed and will not succeed with another franchise.

Goodson is a stiff, and his fumbling will cost the Raids if he gets touches.

If any airline is running a 2 for 1 ticket special – I’d urge Reggie to book Goodson a seat right next to DVD.

Can’t dump Goodson quick enough. Need a replacement before next Monday.

I agree 100% that last years cbs were one of the worst raider units in last 25 years. but Bartell is coming off 2 neck fractures, only played 1 game in 2011, his last INT was in 2008. Spencer who has been around for 9 years has never had more than 4 ints in a season and was a 3rd corner for most of his career. Hanson is one of the lower ranked slot corners in the nfl. Maybe you have a crystal ball and can say they are MUCH better, but these concerns are legit and time will tell.I hope your right and my hope is DA will make this unit much better than last.

One thing you don’t say is Mike Goodson got a very bad stinger, walked out of the hospital and played a little over a week later. Bruce Campbell could never get onto the field. Can not argue with this philosophy at all.

However, if you come to the conclusion that a guy you drafted on potential and hoped would eventually develop into a good player isn’t ever going to cut the mustard – then you have to move on.

Sometimes you’ve got to settle for someone that provides depth and could offer some immediate help if needed, rather than having a player with potential that can’t make a contribution now and probably won’t in the future.

Hopefully, the staff got a long enough look at DVD and Campbell and made the right call on them.

Only time will tell. Regardless of what happens down the line, it sucks that valuable draft choices were expended on Campbell and DVD, with no return. Hard to win championships if you do that.

The dude simply doesn’t have skills that translate to the football field. He’s a waist-bender who reaches for his blocks. When he’s not bending at the wait, he’s letting linemen get into his body, dominating him by gaining leverage on him.

  160. RaiderRetribution Says:

    Reggie improved one of the best DLines in the NFL and decresed the depth of one of the best (New York) by signing Tollefson;

    Reggie improved our linebacker corp and saved the team about $10 million;

    kept our safeties (no team is as deep as the Raiders in these two positions) intact;

revamped the cornerbacks and saved over $10 million without any long term commitments; if these do not work out we have salary cap space to sign top free agents with a first and third round draft selections to make it happen.

Reggie is the man with the plan!

  161. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

Considering the cap problems and dearth of draft picks Reggie had to work with, it’s a little difficult to gauge where he’s going and grade him fairly.

His first priority was getting a coaching staff assembled.

Then he had to decide which players he wanted to retain and which had to go based largely on cap restrictions.

Next, he blew up the scouting department.

Then came the FA signings and the draft.

So, here’s are the major actions we need to consider when evaluating Reggies performance so far:

    Hired DA. Tarver. Knapp.

    Let Wimbley, Routt, Bush walk.

Brought in his brother and someone he was familiar with to revamp the scouting dept.

Decided to retool the interior of the OL by signing Breisel, drafting Bergs and letting Satele go.

Signed Wheeler and Bartell as key replacements on D.

Those are the major decisions and actions he’s taken so far, which will impact 2012 and beyond.

I’ll leave it to the semi’s here to grade his performance so far.

This is not a developmental league. Waiting on potential can cost victories. It also takes coaching time away from game prep to spend full seasons building a players fundamental skills. Thats why there is a practice squad.

The message is clear. Do you job or find a job. That in itself can lead to more professionalism and focus on execution on the field.

Bartell Spencer and Hanson are a MUCH better unit that Routt Lito and CJ/DVD/Chewy.

Amen nyraider! The CB position has been upgraded this year. For those that agree with this statement, but wish we upgraded the CB position more, you’re being too harsh/unrealistic.

We got our CB, now lets focus on getting a TE (#1 Winslow, #2 Cooley, #3 Shockey)!

J great point, teams do not even give their qbs drafted in the 1st round that much time to develop anymore; win now or go apply at the northtown mall.

  168. RaiderRetribution Says:

166 and at half the price of Routt’s one year salary.

  169. RaiderRetribution Says:

I believe it was Alec or YA, that correctly stated the seasoned TEs the Raiders are probably interested in are all vested veterans; so their salary would be guaranteed for the season should we sign them before game 1.

Reggie waits until after the MNF game, allows the Raiders to cut the player midseason if he does not pan out without having to pay the remainder of the contract for the season.

Also gives Meyrs, Ausberry, & Gordon one meaningful game that counts to prove they belong in the Silver & Black.

Considering the cap problems and dearth of draft picks Reggie had to work with, it’s a little difficult to gauge where he’s going and grade him fairly.

…Then he had to decide which players he wanted to retain and which had to go based largely on cap restrictions.

    :::::::::::::::::::::::

According to RegMac interviews, his priority is to get the cap and the draft how he wants it to be. In the mean time, it SEEMS that he is signing the best quality players that fit in his budget to short term contracts and letting them play to stay.

I ASSUME that the ones that rise to the top will be rewarded once the books are in order and it will be clear where FA’s and draft pics are needed to move the team fwd.

However, the expectations (reasonable hopes) don’t change.
2012-13: 9 wins or bust (playoffs)
    2013-14: playoffs or bust (division)
2014-15: division or bust (AFC champ game)
2015-16: AFC champ game or bust (SB)

    Of course, overachievement is acceptable

I see Schmitt is listed as RB on raiders.com. Reese will get touches too. I guess that will make Goodson a 5th option. If he cant hold onto the ball with limited touches then I guess Jeremy Stewart will step up from the practice squad. It will probably take some extremely unfortunate circumstances for the Raiders to sign a new RB.

What is the infatuation for corners that can stop the run when 90 %of the nfl passes?
I’m not impresses so for with shriek I mean mc shriek and our new coach isn’t burden or madden so he better get it done or fire both there asses.
I watched a top 10 offense last year that should have hosted a playoff game get its brain trusted shown the door for a denver broncos shanahan look alike offense that sucked in Washington worked in Huston mostly because Adrian foster is a durable power back like Terrell davis was not a home run hitter like DMc
I’ve got concerns mark davis is trying to run the. Team into the ground to move them back to la

I pay a lot of money to see a product that was promised to us on the 2 previous drafts that these bananas want to throw away like yesterday’s news. Why so I can go through another 2 drafts to have these 2 replaced with 2other baboons that will want to go in another direction and throw away their guys they drafted for their own 2year plan?
Work with what you got, stop crying this team has talent it was a bad call or two away from hosting a playoff game with a qb that came off his couch.
You should have gave Al’s plan a year before blowing it up, he forgot more football then you will ever know!

The key to being the general all will follow is not to swing it around lopping off people’s heads, everyone knows you have the sword the trick is never having to use it to inspire and drive the team into one true unit!

I want to get behind this and believe it was for the best but so far Im struggling to believe we can compete in a div we dominated 2 years ago and controlled last year!
