Odds and ends from busy day
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, September 5th, 2012 at 6:26 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders reportedly worked out tight end Fendi Onobun today, the same day they reportedly met with wide receviers Jabar Gaffney and Tiquan Underwood. The Buffalo Bills waived Onobun last week.
Onobun, 25, played three games for the St. Louis Rams in 2010, catching two passes for 15 yards. He played in one game for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season, without catching any passes. He also spent time with the Buffalo Bills in 2011.
– The Raiders said kicker Sebastian Janikowski was excused from practice Tuesday so that he could spend time with his wife and their newborn twin daughters.
– The Raiders changed Saturday’s practice to an evening affair as a means of better simulating the conditions for the regular-season opener.
Also, the practice will be moved from the team’s year-round facility in Alameda to the Coliseum, where the Raiders play the Chargers on Monday night.
Former coaches Hue Jackson and Tom Cable used a similar approach, to mixed results. Jackson changed the practices the week before last season’s opener in Denver to nighttime affairs, and the Raiders went to Denver and beat the Broncos.
– The Raiders reached injury settlements with tight end Tory Humphrey, defensive tackle Jamie Cumbie and offensive lineman Ed Wang before waiving them from the injured-reserve list.
Fullback Rashawn Jackson was waived from the injured reserve without an injury settlement.
Making these moves means the Raiders don’t have to count their 2012 base salaries toward their salary cap, which became mandatory Tuesday.
It’s interesting to note that the Raiders left punter Marquette King on the injured reserve. Punter Shane Lechler’s contract is up after this season.
– Quarterback Carson Palmer, running back Darren McFadden, defensive tackles Richard Seymour and Tommy Kelly and punter Shane Lechler were elected as captains for this year’s Raiders team.

Three different short yardage, 1 or 2 yards to go run plays from these teams, and each one lost yardage.
3rd and 1 is almost a passing situation these days.

Gonna be watching the game on Monday in a house full of Charger fans. I can’t wait to rub it in when Raiders win!!!

He is the obvious choice to you guy’s unfortunately you wont be making that pick.
Listen I like Mcfadden just not as much as you do. You guy’s think he’s capable of all kinds of things and I disagree I think he’s a speed back and that’s it.
I want a lot of things but they knw what that team needs and if I knew what they were thinking I wouldn’t put it in here. Personally I like Ellis, Dorsey, Gholston, Long and the OT Long.
McFadden is just not a dominant HB IMO and for my money there’s no way I draft him that high if he’s not.
We have what I feel is a dominant HB in Mb and a great change of pace back in Fargas. As far as versatility MB is much more so than DMC, and he can pass as well as DMC. He’s just a much better player.

BOB if DMC were a great back and I mean a dominant back I would draft him in a heart beat.
But IMO he is just an overhyped speed back. I’ll tell you someting else in terms of an evey down back I would take Fargas over him simply because he’s proven and runs extremely hard. DMC is all flash and fast, I don’t believe that he would holdup to the pounding yu take at that position. He’s tooo damn easy to bring down. That’s why his little highlight reel you NEVER see him take on defenders and win. He’s just running against the wind.
Baby that is not the NFL……I’m sorry they will hand that kid his hat and coat and send him packing.

Plunketthead… you’re a third world bafoon if you honestly believe Dmac is simply a speed back. He’s a complete back with speed, power, moves, hands and blocking ability. When that man lowers his shoulders he knocks people back, and did you see the hat he laid on haloti ngata a few years back? He’s as physical as they come which is why hes often injured, wayyyyyy more than a speed back. Calling dmac simply a speed back proves you know nothing about the game of football proving all of your future opinions to be non valid.

Denarious Moore has been gone for most of OTAs, all of training camp and is still missing time. Him and Jacoby Ford spending too much time in the tub.
Hate to say it, but the Raiders are not going to be able to afford to wait for players to come back only to miss big chunks of the season.
Setting ourselves again where a 1 week injury turns into 8 to 10 missed games

I get a kick out of people who don’t like Knapp because it isn’t “Raider” football (this is true; Raider football to me means leading the world in penalties and not making the playoffs, so I welcome the change) yet hate on Rolando as well.
=============================================
JFB, There was a time when Raider football was synonymous with stretching the field vertically and smashmouth offensive line play. Yes, we led the world in penalties, but we also won championships.
I get that you want to win and welcome a change to a system or style that you think will accomplish that.
What you want to do is ‘Just win, baby’. After all, that is our mantra and the bottom line.
On that we’re probably all in agreement.
Perhaps Knapp can redefine what ‘Raider’ ball is by helping bring a championship.
The many years of losing has eroded the once proud renegade identity the Raids once enjoyed.
The mystique is gone.
All that remains is the memory of what ‘Raider’ ball once was.
But make no mistake, there once was a ‘Raider’ brand of football and it was about as different as can be from the conservatism that I think Knapp will bring in 2012.
I know you welcome the change and think it’s the way to winning, I don’t.
Don’t even get me started on Slo-mania.

Then Hue wasn’t getting enough attention and pulled the plug on that one.

I hate to be hard on Moore and Ford. But these guys aren’t exactly Larry Fitzgerald or Calvin Johnson.
I mean, they still are in the “prove it” phase. Missing an entire preseason is a lot to overcome.
And they aren’t practicing this week either. No timing, no synergy and just mental reps.
DHB has to come up.

You can’t PUP someone once the season begins, but you CAN place him on the new IR/DTR (Injured Reserve/Designated to Return) list. He’d be eligible to comeback in week 8, I think. And they should do this with Ford.

It just boggles me that new scheme the Raiders are running the tightend is a after though. The one cut and go, quarter back rollout, the tightend needs to be very active and versatile to make this work. I feel the Raiders have a player to do that but they should have been working his butt off already in games if they had confidence in him.
I Think Reece and Dmac are going to be breathing heavy during the games but with a active catching tightend would take the seal off the edges and open up the running game and passing game.

Probably one of the big reasons for the demise of DVD is the fact that Dennis Allen is known to be a very good coach of DB’s. If DA couldn’t coach him up, no other DB coaches in the league figured they could.

This is DA’s team…but probably Tarver’s defense….

No doubt the defensive schemes are a combination of their ideas.

if it’s hard to stop the Doltz offense monday night with a missing top RB, 2 rookie OL(one of them covering Rivers’ blindside), with no more VJ(the other raider killer) or a healthy Gates… god help us.

Palmer 32 td’s 12 int’s 3,800 yds.
Manning (Peyton) 28 td’s 10 int’s 3,700 yds.
Granted… those are 2005 numbers.
Point is it’s in him…somewhere.

DA firmly believes in Knapp Miami.. and his ZBS and his WCO .. Saunders knows nothing of either and he hasn’t been a full on OC in many years. don’t hold you breath.

I think part of the reason Allen brought in Knapp was his familiarity with the Raiders organization….that being said…I don’t think DA is going to have any issue’s with adjusting his coordinators if he feels it is necessary….
I think Allen is a fiery guy….seen glimpses of it in pre season….
He will not hesitate to make a move if things aren’t going the way they should…

Saunders is a vertical passing game guy.
when has he ever ran a WCO?
maybe a ZBS at some point, but i’m pretty sure he’s about power blocking as well.

While we do not have speed pass rushers…..we do have power rushers….this helps against pocket passers….hurts us when their is a more mobile QB….Rivers is a pocket passer…

Yes that’s what I was trying to say.More concise and without my verbosity.

i have no doubht that DA is going to be a good HC and will make adjustments when needed. it just seems since he’s a defensive minded HC, that it’s only nature to hand the keys to the knappy nap state of mind O. RUN RUN RUN PUNT … we suffered through it once. if it isn’t working, one would hope DA would pull the plug. Knapp got demoted once, it can happen again.
timing routes versus the vertical passing game from last yaers offense. we’ll see what it can do with 4 injured receivers, lol

239,
Didn’t mean to offend your favorite team there Debo but the NYG seemed lifeless…in their demeanor and the way they looked. It could have been they were more gassed. That was my honest impression. I don’t care either way…i don’t like either team so i have no emotional investment.
Dallas was better tonight. Doesn’t make them a better team overall. When KC beat GB last yr did it mean they are the better team…period?
You don’t have to be such a dik. Sorry I touched a nerve with your beloved cowboys.

Twinkle,
i bet we’ll be fine. it is only week 1. i’d rather end strong and start crappy like the NYG did last year! 9-7 wins the SB. anything is possible now! they got all their players healthy WHEN IT MATTERED at the end. they just kept their head above water throughout. remains to be seen if we can tread water without our stars in play!

I realized that when he hired Knapp but I never understood why we headed so far off of the path of what we did here last year. We were explosive on offensee (under the circumstances) and I thought for sure Al was kept to go over and maybe implement some of what worked here under Hue, to what we will do this season.

xraided I think we may have been b/sing the league with our purebred WCO.Last time I looked CP didn’t conjure up memories of JoMo.For one CP can score from our own endzone. It’ll be some kind of hybrid….only a fool tries
to make strawberry sodas with lemons.Zone or Power?Who cares? As long it gives us an edge.

I do too.I just can’t help but remember all the baseball teams that said ‘if we could have only won a couple more at the beginning’.1-0 rips…0-1 means it has become a fourteen game season.9-7 is putrid….so were the gigantes…..cept when it mattered.Kind of dilutes the entire game when those losers make the playoffs and GB goes 15-1.
