Final: Chargers 22, Raiders 14

Scrambling to get the first print story across . . . here’s a partial of the grisly result . . .

Of all the potential problems Raiders coach Dennis Allen played out in his mind before his head coaching debut, being unable to deliver the ball to the punter probably wasn’t one of them.

The Raiders lost their season opener 22-14 to the San Diego Chargers Monday night at O.co Coliseum, with an injury to Pro Bowl snapper Jon Condo being the most glaring issue but hardly the only one.

Emergency replacement Travis Goethel rolled a pair of snaps to Shane Lechler, with a third punt attempt getting blocked, helping account for three of Nate Kaeding’s five field goals.

By game’s end, Kaeding had field goals of 23, 28, 19, 41 and 45 yards against an Oakland defense that played well in the red zone.

The field goals, plus a 6-yard touchdown pass from Phillip Rivers to Malcom Floyd, was more than enough to offset field goals of 51 and 19 yards by Sebastian Janikowski and a cosmetic 2-yard flip from quarterback Carson Palmer to Rod Streater in the final minute.

Fans grew increasingly frustrated with a Raiders passing offense that too often threw short of the stakes, piling up completions and yards but not enough points as Oakland dropped its ninth opening game in the last 10 years.

Palmer completed 31 of 46 passes for 297 yards and a touchdown, with Darren McFadden catching 13 passes for 86 yards. The Raiders, however, managed only 45 yards on the ground _ McFadden had 32 yards on 15 carries _ and the offensive stats were just window dressing.

San Diego quarterback Phillip Rivers completed 24 of 33 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown.

Dennis Alan Jan 30 2012 intro:

“’ I’m going to sum it up real quickly for you guys. On offense, we’re going to be up-tempo. We want to be fast, we want to be aggressive. You’ll hear me use that word a lot, aggressiveness, and I think that’s critical in the game of football. We want to be fast. We want to be up-tempo. We’re going to be able to run the football and run the football solidly so we can stay ahead of the chains on first and second down, okay, and we’re going to be explosive in the passing game. We’ve got those weapons in place to be able to do that, and that’s what we’re going to do”

LOL! Then he hired Knapp. Allen should be fired for BS’ing Raider nation.

Thec,Bcz-carry on.I can’t take it any more tonight./////That’s what I said. And then I opened another beer. But other than them it’s mostly trolls that have been lurking and are blowing their wads right now.

Lefty, Rivers had all day to throw the ball. McClain looked the best on defense.

  • manassamauler

yeah this team didn’t need an offensive overhaul AT ALL. defense YES, but the offense was set and ready to be a top 5 scoring offense IMO. this all before we got the 3 yard horizontal shuffle installed. why did they bring knapp in here and not just promote Al Saunders? now we’re in rebuild mode or have been for 9 years? i dont really know. if we’re doin the whole horizontal attack thing then we should be thinking about some trades.

I hope Palmer is very angry tonight He cannot accept this lightly. The Chargers did not win, the Raiders beat themselves. Period, end of story. Better luck in Miami! Until then, go A’s!!!

Lefty, I must admit the only positive was that the D did not lay down and let the score get out of hand as in seasons past. I am just afraid we have gone from all offense and no defense, to all defense and no offense.

  • beach

And I am very concerned that the combo of Knapp and Palmer will give us heartache all season.
