Raiders make it official _ Reece signs extension

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, September 11th, 2012 at 9:43 am in Oakland Raiders.

Fullback Marcel Reece has signed a contract extension to remain with the Raiders beyond the 2012 season, the club announced Tuesday.

Terms and length of the deal which was first reported by CBS Sports Monday were not disclosed.

Reece was a Pro Bowl alternate fullback in 2011 despite missing four games due to injury. He caught 27 passes for 310 yards and is the most versatile player at his position.

A wide receiver in college at Washington, Reece, 6-foot-2, 250 pounds, can go in motion or be split as a wide receiver, as he did on occasion in Oakland’s season-opening 22-14 loss to the San Diego Chargers.

Reece, who caught two passes for 24 yards against San Diego, was scheduled to make $540,000 this season. An exclusive rights free agent, Reece did not immediately sign his tender and missed some time in the offseason.

With no leverage, Reece eventually reported in the hopes the Raiders would bargain in good faith and work toward a new deal.

Skins are going to be good this year. I must admit the rat called a brilliant game as well as the DCO. They got pressure on Brees. They have to get rid of Knapp..sooner rather than later..gonna be another wasted year. Have to adapt offense to talent strengths not force talent to system.

I was not and I am not a fan of WCO or Knapp….but I don’t think a final grade is after 1 week.

Carson has to execute THIS offense or this is his last year.

The system is being imposed on the talent…not being adjusted. THat’s life.

As for Hue, perhaps if he kept his mouth shut and didn’ challenge the owners authority…he’d still be here. But heck, I don’t think he was all that great…lot’s of dry 2nd halves and UNFORGIVEABLE blowouts down the stretch.

Tell these MILLION DOLLAR PLAYERS to step the hell up and do their job!

  30. Haters going to hate Says:

Anyone else see SD’s left guard moving early the whole game?

This includes Kelly’s second offsides and SD’s touchdown.

Then the Raiders should have a shot to run one more play at the end of the game after the punt but the refs did not allow it.

  31. Just Win Baby Says:

Wouldn’t it have made a bit more sense to have the Center fill in for the long snapper rather than a LB? He snaps it back to the QB in shotgun formation all the time and knows a bit about the importance of velocity. Kind of seems like the Center’s job anyway.

I am down and said so last night. teams that run the no-huddle have a greater since of urgency. Keeps the D off balance and that is the ticket for getting D Mac to bust one.

Question, is GK the only OCO in the NFL on the sidelines?

    ===============================================
Dang Thec, every time I’m about to let up on the Krappster, someone brings up another reason to blast his sorry azz.

I don’t know if he’s the only one, but he’s one of the very few.

And I’ll tell you what – he’s got no fkng biz being on the sideline.

Heck, he’s got no fkng biz being the OC to begin with – but it’s ridiculous the way he stands there constantly looking over his play chart.

I swear he’s looking at his chart instead of watching what’s going on out there.

How many fking times do u need to look at that damned chart ?

Seriously, it should be MEMORIZED and known by heart by the time the game starts.

Looks like the doofus is looking through the list for a play that might work, instead of knowing what he wants to call and just sending the call in to CP.

Don’t even get me started on whether Krapp has installed a no-huddle at all. I DON’T THINK HE HAS.

    FPOS.

After one game? No. Who would want to come work for a team where you get fired after one game? Give him time to improve. If he does, great! If not, we hand the playcalling over to Saunders/CP/Holz/whoever, and then show Knapp the door after the season. This is how SANE teams work.

  54. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

  71. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

I’ll stand alone on this. Greg Knapp should not be fired or demoted. Not after 1 week.

I believe that DA and Reggie are watching this closely.

    The players have to execute.

If anyone is on the hot seat it should be DHB.

ABsolutely a non-factor and he’s supposed to be the beast man top receiver. Nothing but dropped passess and missed reads….sure he gives you the obligatory nice catch…problem its only 1.

    He’s got to step up.

too many receivers not getting to the 3rd down marker.

fumbles and khalif barnes reminding people why he was cut from jacksonville.

offensive line has to attack. this zbs is supposed to attack..these guys got manhandled on the run.

DA and REggie have to start cutting players for dumb penalties….and I am serious about that…cutting them

Streeter – UFA – possession guy
Hagan – from the curb – possession guy

Not a lot to work with going down the field like you all wanted to do. S.D keyed in DMAC and the TE was no where to be found.

If Ford and DMoore are goign to stay off the field, then the Raiders need to get someone else.

Hagan – from the curb – possession guy
Criner – 5th round pick – possession guy
DHB – perennial underachiever – possession guy

Not a lot to work with going down the field like you all wanted to do. S.D keyed in DMAC and the TE was no where to be found.

If Ford and DMoore are goign to stay off the field, then the Raiders need to get someone else.

What I am saying is that Reggie and DA are going to stick with Knapp longer than they will with Palmer.

So Palmer has to FIND A WAY to make this work, which he will.

It’s unclear how long Sundberg will be out, or whether they’ll put him on injured reserve.

He suffered the injury in the first half but played on, giving him street cred as the baddest long snapper in the league (at least until one of the other midgets grows taller).

    ******************
You don’t need the machine. I know I advocated replacing Jano (not Condo specifically). The reason ia they take a lot of cap space for what they are – bang for the buck. Would not mind resigning at going rate however. Key is when you replace a guy like Condo or Jano you do not replace them with the worst longsnapper or kicker possible. I have not even seen longsnapping that bad even in College. That is flawed logic. Obviously Goethel was not ready to long snap. That is on the ST Coach and to a lesser degree on Goethel and DA. I would sign a fire Hamilton petition that was inexcusable.

I can’t judge Knapp, yet. The haters point to what he’s done badly in the past; the non- haters, what he’s done well, and I’m giving him a total pass on his previous stint with the Raiders. I can only wait and see if he really is inflexible and dogmatic with his offensive scheme, ignoring the strengths and weaknesses of his personnel(I doubt it), or has maybe learned a thing or two as he has worked his way around the NFL and is picking Saunders brain and working with our strengths and weaknesses and just didn’t show us jack in the preseason(more likely). Time will tell.

  163. Goldie7 Says:

    ^^^^^^^^
Getting rid of Hues pulling, counter, and trap power running game was STUPID in favor of a heavy ZBS scheme.

Plus, McK didn’t want to pay to keep Bush which was a mistake!

Lets hope Saunders replaces Knapp soon with the play calling and Saunders brings back that power running game with more vertical passing and more of screen game that him and Hue ran so well last year.

Oh man, had a bunch of neighbors over and frineds last night at the Crib(most of them Donkey Fans) and you can imagine all the BS my wife and kids had to hear abou the game, what a mess!

    The Good:

Defense looked great. Especially Romac, Wheeler, and Burris, guys were making plays!

No one seriusly got injured outside of Condo adn Bartell.

    The Bad;

Where do we start? Letting go of Wimbley now doesnt look good as we had no pass rush. Did anyone else think ShoNasty would be so bad?

Knapp used Dmac WAY too much. Almost got the dude killed like 3x.

D Moore being in really opens this offense up. DHB is and will never live up to his draft status and he is not a #1.

No TE is going to hurt us.

Biggest issue is the playcalling. There was a reason Carson looked good vs SD, Detroit, and SD last year. He was in the right system. We need that no huddle too!

I know no one wants to hear about HUE, but whatever offense he had us run last year was the right one, not the WCO bs!!

It won’t matter when Moore or Ford come back either. Knapp sucks!

Al Saunders should start calling the offensive plays ASAP, since he will do more power running, with trapping, pulling, counters, with some zone runs mixed in and more vertical explosive passing and more screens!

The problem that I saw the few times I can see it was the WR’s downfield were adeuately covered. DHB was doubled and they were able to cover Hagen and Streeter with single coverage for the most part. The TEs were almost left alone when they did not fall over themselves. If Palmer forced it and got intercepted we would have never heard the end of it!

Regarding Reece – he was holding back until a contract. I do not think he had a touch in the Preseason for instance. That is on RM and Reece not CP3 and Knapp. Altough I wanted Saunders for OC myself, I am starting to turn into a Knapp apologist because of all the stupid comments being made. Please remember our offense was inconsistent last year and disappeared at times. Especially late in games so please remember and be objective.

Knapp overused McFadden and should have forced the issues with the TEs more since no one was really even covering them. CP3 was not even throwing that way or they were not running routes until later in the game. He had some of his deepest completions late in the game to TEs. Players have to execute. Need the tight end to come up bigger

  202. Plunketthead Says:

This is the new look Raiders. Get used to it. Reggie is looking for the elite QB and WR’s who stay healthy and catch the ball.

In this system which is the way the NFL is headed, RB’s are plug ins as well as O line men.

Spend your Offense money on WR and QB and TE. Its been plain as day this is the way Goodell is shaping the NFL.

Defense can be great but if Goodell wont let them lay the wood or harass WR’s or touch QB;s it wont do any good.

One more reason I never wanted Al to go and always rooted for him to stay in power. Now we are just another vanilla team, probaly floundering forever in the celler

Unless we get lucky and land a top ten QB to get us into the playoffs for the next ten years. The system will be ready for him to succeed in if we do get lucky

Reggie than sat around during the preseason with knowing 2 out of our 3 best receivers would be out and brought in Hagen only which is such a reach. Then as a gm he allows his team not to have a back up snapper.
the hiring of Knapp is both DA AND REGGIE’S fault. Reggie doesnt get a pass. A new coach who has to hire a staff quickly doesnt have the time to fully understand every strength about last year. Reggie as a GM should have know our strength was power blocking, throwing the ball downfield and made sure DA brought in an off coordinator that could add value to an offense that was the primary reason we went 8-8 not 4-12 last year. Once Davis and McK fired Hue, everything was going to be an up hill battle for this team to take it to next level.

The strength of this team was the offense the last two years with Hue around.

By not keeping him or his offensive system and by bringing in a numb nut like Knapp to scrap the good system we had and go in a completely different direction was stubborn and stupid.

Al Saunders needs to start calling plays ASAP for this team to have an chance at being competitive this year.

Or this season will get ugly real quick.

Davis, McK and DA should have known not to mess with the strengths of the team on offense and just try to fix the weaknesses on defense.

Goldie and others blastng the checkdowns

Why all the check downs? The few times BSPN showed the downfield coverage (by the way BSPN sucks!!!! in how they covera a football game please quit talking about ancient history to impress us and please get guys that can objectively and honestly break down a game!) The problem that I saw the few times I can see it was the WR’s downfield were adeuately covered.

It would be nice to have a better TE right now if one is available.

    ^^^^^^^^
Our offense was explosive for the most part and scored TD’s and was not predictable and was not a dink and dunk conservative no balls offense like this Knapp crap is.

    ***************************************************
I understand what you’re saying about the double teaming our WRs Dk007 but there are no excuses for Knapp not using our TEs or being creative with Reece. Reece is a dangerous weapon and Knapp didn’t use him properly.

  293. RaidersOne Says:

How is it and why is it that teams such as the Broncos can completely transform from 3rd tier losers to top flight contenders in less than 6 months??

The reason is, those orgs have staff and personnel who know the game on a professional level.

For the past 10 yrs the Raiders have lacked such personnel and are still lacking such personnel.

The Raiders failed on the most basic levels. So many posters here claimed Knapp was a bad choice and a loser: they were correct. Many of the same posters claimed the Raiders should have continued where they left off on offense last yr, while seeking to narrow and improve it. Instead, they said we allowed a loser, Knapp, to come in with a new offense, blocking schemes, and playbook.

    Those posters were correct.

Why Reggie and Mark Davis didn’t understand the obvious, see what was right before their eyes, I’ll never know.

We will have our azzes handed to us by Miami on Sunday, as the fins have done now for many yrs, inexplicably. We will definitely lose to the Steelers, who will grind us up like cheap meat. We’ll then be 0/3 and again be out of contention.

The quick and logical fix of firing Knapp and substituting in Al Saunders will never be taken, as will firing of the malingerers Moore and Ford will never be considered.

All in all, the taint of AD lingers.

In other words, we can’t do anything right.

Raiders suck !!! CP3 is a lead footed idiot. I laugh at you jerks thinking the Raiders will ever beat the Broncos and Manning. Fire CP3 idiot tomorrow ??

A few weeks ago I mentioned here that the 49′ers would beat the Raiders time and again and was practically driven off the blog. For all of you who attacked me: F off. The 9′ers will beat this crappy team and the moron Knapp 100 out of 100 times.

    Go 9′ers and Denver !

That’s too much to expect from the loser CP3.

I want on #43 petition to fire Knapp. I agree with Just Win Baby as to why the regular center was not used to do the long snaps, especially after the disaster from Goethel. Has anyone noticed in preseason how our young front D line guys had put pressure on the QB without the presence of TK and Seymore. I was against bringing back both TK and Seymore. We could have saved 7.5 million on Seymore and don’t know how much on TK. This money saved could have gotten us some quality players like a decent running back, TE, and maybe CB Tracy Porter. No excuse for Seymore not getting in and sacking Rivers when SD had a rookie LT. For 15 million, I do not see Seymore putting in any effort, he is just collecting a check, what do you guys think?

I don’t like what Palmer said in this interview.

He’s saying the reason we didn’t do much on offense is becuz SD played deep and didn’t wanna give up the big play etc.

    *************************
CP3 was being polite. Everytime I could see coverages the recievers were not open! We need a true #1 Reciever that can beat a double team and free up DHB into single coverage. It would also be nice to have a TE that is viewed as a reasonable threat. You can not just give it to DMC and hope for the best – I do blame Knapp for that.

I get that your frustrated but simply bringing in Saunders is not going to cure this. Finally it is not like we were the NE Patriots last year on offense. We were above average but by no means elite and inconsistent to boot.

As for some of these posts??? Some are so stupid I am thinking of not coming on here anymore. Some of them must just be trolling they are so dumb (aka Oakforshow) Take this quote for instance: “The quick and logical fix of firing Knapp and substituting in Al Saunders will never be taken, as will firing of the malingerers Moore and Ford will never be considered.” So we fire an overachieving 5th round pick just coming off an injury or you “fire” a guy that single handlingly beat a couple of teams in the last couple of years with awesome catches and special team returns. Those two would not even get by Indy on waivers!!! Yea that will fix it. I am sorry, fire your self as a poster.

Yes, an intelligent post. Someone needs to get in Kelly’s face and someone needs to work with Reece on doing more than just being a reicever from the RB position. Letting Wimbley go was whos decision? not having a back up snapper on the roster has nothing to do with a gm? Having an undrafted rookie WR start when you knew for a month your top 2 out of 3 WRs would be out with good quality vet WRs sitting out there has to fall on the GM. The cap is such an excuse, he could have cut TK or Seymour and saved enough money to bring in playmakers at the CB and WR position. not to mention his 3rd round draft choice doesnt look good either. . These are his responsibilities and he gets a pass? wait till dmac gets hurt and your watching tawain jones fumble twice a game and then youll be giving reggie a pass for lack of depth at the rb position too.

FWIW, I am sad and angry that we lost last night. I’m not thrilled with our inability to establish the run with this cut blocking, not happy with the reverse play that lost mega yards and killed our momentum, and not happy with the dink and stink passing game.

BUT, I am happy with how our defense played against the run. I am happy that outside of Kelly’s two bonehead penalties we mostly played smart football. I thought Streater and Burris played great for rookies and Hagan came in and contributed right away. Palmer looked sharp most of the game, even though he didn’t have all his playmakers available.

I’d like to see better coverage from our secondary, especially quicker adjustments when Rivers was hitting so much underneath stuff or the quick outs. We didn’t pressure Rivers consistently as much as I expected we would, but we did get to see glimpses of what our pass rush is capable of doing and got some solid pressures and hits on him.

I’d also like to see some serious adjustments to our play calling and blocking. For all of Hue’s faults, the thing he did best was ask the players what plays they liked best and make them take ownership of those plays. McFadden is our star and we need to run the plays suited to his strengths.

I am not going to go down the doom and gloom road. This was one game and we have plenty more (currently) to get it together.

Anyone else notice the LG on SD was moving the whole game?

Watch TK’s second offside at 35 seconds, you can see the LG drop his should and the LDT jump because that’s in his line of site.

Even at SD’s touchdown he flinches at 1:15

Been a long time reader of this blog going back five or six years now. But felt I had to comment after last nights game.

I hate to keep beating a dead horse but if you remember, before Hue we were terrible against the AFC West. I dont even know the infamous record we had from 2003 thru 2009.

As soon as Hue took over our offense we were 9-3 against our AFC west foes. Cant ignore those facts. I will take that over a two period against our division rivals any day.

Last night looked like the team from 2007. Sad sad day my nation brothers. 1 step forward 3 steps back.

well said. Hue made that offense tough, and its the reason we had SD’s numbers there for a while. Now its back to same ol same ol

    ^^^^^^^^
    Yep.

Hue was turning the team around and all he needed was a REAL DC and more discipline.

I thought DA and this new ERA were going to clean up the discipline problems??

    Yeah right.

The Knapp hire and switching to his whack old new offensive playbook has already proven to be a bad move.

Not keeping Bush around will prove costly as well. Knapp wouldn’t know how to use Bush anyways and he will get DMC killed!

Like I said, I hate looking into the past and like to move forward.

But last night, I could not help myself thinking how we would do against that SD defense with our scheme from last year.

Like someone mentioned a few weeks ago, that no huddle game plan against SD on Thursday night was pure fire!!

We were fast, throwing the deep ball, keeping em off balance with well timed screens, and power running plays with pulling guards.

That was raider offensive football at its finest. And that is what our personnel dicates we should run. Now we are stuck with this square peg round hole offense that no one fits.

A few here wanted HUE Jax let go because of his so call attitude. Hue Jax prove himself worthy for 2 straight yrs. by turning a lackadaisical offense around into a productive one. Mark Davis chose to trade Hue in for some pillow talking newbies. Yes, that upset me and I thought that would upset many more Raider fan than it did. You know why? Talk is cheap and in comparison if norv Turner had a job to come back to so should Hue.
Okay, you say give Reggie and DA a fair shake. I will tell now, I will give them a fair shot at making it work but it will be a bit hard for me to do it. DA choice for OC make it difficult. First, the scheme did not fit the Raider players skillset. you know the 1 cut and run, precise route running receivers, better than avg. tightend, and a mobile QB. DA being tagged as a well organized coach with attention to detail did not think this one through with good foresight.

Rushing from line for scrimmage has been a nightmare all preseason until now. What will Mr. attention to detail do about that? Are the Raiders now a passing team first? and if so where is the middle of the field threat? So many questions and I hope Reggie,DA,Knapp find the answers.

how soon we forget…everyone was all over hue and to get his azz out of here..now u want him back over one game?????….ok..well our defense played the best ive seen in years and DA hired our dc right?…..knapp was hired cause he manipulated REG and DA in having them believe he can run the offense the way houston ran theres..(ill take houstons offense anyday…they have a great rb just like we do..except they have an elite wr and a good te)..cant blame DA for our lack of depth…hue was going to take us nowhere..if u all are happy with an 8-8 record every year…so be it..id rather go this route and go 8-8 this year knowing there will only be an improvent from here on end…what is with everyone saying we are still undisciplined?…we only had 6 penalties…im used to 10 to 12 on average…an improvement already…the draft picks reg made so far look pretty good..the fa’s he brought in made a difference as well….easy guys..the team is starting to look like it should be..a team on the rise..u want superbowl this year…ur being delusional….aint gonna happen..by the end of the year the league will take notice that the raiders are on the way up…reggie mak was a great hire and u guys will see it soon..patience…he’s a smart guy who came from an organization that built its winning team over time..not over night…thats they way ur supposed to run a team….we dont have the players yet…..just remember..if reggie mack was the one who traded for palmer u would call for his azz….how soon u forget it was hue that made that move….remember?????????????….wake up

Well said, we still have time to PUT YOUR PANTS! After the bitterness wears off, all we can take are the positives from the game and move forward.

Yeah Tx, it’s a hard thing to do man. I’d be lying if I said my day wasn’t Sh*tty BECAUSE of last night. It stings, and I’m gonna have a bad taste for a few days….. But man, I haven’t seen Burris play better than he did. He was a beast. Heard his name a bunch. Great knife through the line to tackle for loss too. That’s what we need outta our LB’s. I ain’t gonna get into what I didn’t like, that’s been goin on for the last 12 hours.

    DJ Johnny,

And what’s your point DJ ???? At least when I am so pissed off, upset and frustrated after 28 yrs of losing I will say something radical.

While you on the other hand will be mellow and la-de-da “whatever man.”

What is wrong with respecting talent and organizational capability in the 49′ers and Broncos that have transformed their organizations almost miraculously in a very short time period?

We should study it carefully, use the information, as any capable manager would.

Go spin your records dude, and continue to act like a blind fool; accept losing, accept a wasting of your time and loyalty by idiots, and accept the taking of your money on a flawed product for the past 28 yrs.

    Have at it, baby.

You don’t read my posts obviously and that’s fine. If u did you’d see I have been almost over the top in my criticism of the team since last night’s debacle.

IMO saying “WE” is suugesting you’re “one of us” as in Raider fan.

I have never heard a true Raider fan say “Go Niners and “Go Denver”. Maybe you’re one of those ‘well I like the Raiders..but I like the niners and Denver more’ type of fans. That’s fine, it’s your life, but coming on here saying “we” is b.s. “WE” is the Raider fans..NOT Denver of SF.

What you call “radical” (go niners, go denver) most would call betrayal..that’s IF you were really a Raider fan. You just don’t say that schytt.

Go wear your niners jersey and your denver hat and have fun with it.

You can’t be all things to all people…that’s makes u a bullschytt frontrunner.
