Raiders sign long-snapper among six roster moves

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, September 12th, 2012 at 12:57 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders signed long-snapper Nick Guess, cornerback Coye Francies and defensive lineman Brandon Bair to their practice squad Wednesday.
In turn, they released wide receiver Brandon Carswell, defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga and linebacker Nathan Stupar from their practice squad.
It’s possible that the Raiders will wait until later in the week, when they have a better gauge on the status of regular long-snapper Jon Condo (concussion), to decide whether to sign Guess to their 53-man roster.
Guess was released by the San Diego Chargers on Aug. 27, when the Chargers pared their roster to 75 players. He is from the University of Tennessee.
More later, once we speak with coach Dennis Allen after practice.

    I respect your opinion Goldie. I just keep thinking back to last year. What if Bresnehan had been replaced right after his debacle in Buffalo???

    Our season might very well have had a story book ending!

    8-8 will not win the division this year with Peyton Manning looking like Superman again in Denver.

    We were Top 10 in scoring last season…without Mcfadden!

    Yep….I totally agree with ya AC GM…100%. Sorry about delay…I was away from my computer.

    Nobody had less rushing yards than the Giants last year. Green Bay was 24th the year before. In 2009, The Saints had a top 10 attack that was fueled by their passing attack which was higher. The Steelers were 23rd in rushing yards in 2008. You still think it’s the most important thing on defense is to stop the run in today’s NFL?

    ===========================================

    Yes. Teams will take what you give them, and passing is risky. If you give them 5 yards a carry, they’ll happily run it up the gut game after game on you. These teams developed their great passing offenses BECAUSE so many teams were loading up against the run. Doesn’t mean they won’t run it if we let them.

    Yesterday was Pretty shocking to hear guys like Romo and Rod Woodson even papa saying how this system doesnt fit these offensive players. Woodson said he saw DMAC upclose last year and he is a Champ but the ZBS doesnt fit him. Romo said Dmac is a north south runner and is a tack stud.. he needs to find the hole and go.. not this cut back and change zbs. Papa agreed and said Mr. Davis didnt like it at all.

    Woodson said players love habit so its gonna take a while for them to change to this system. Im willing to give Knapp one more chance go air it deep this week.

    Shoot, he’s got a free pass w/ u guys.

    Why is everyone so quick to absolve the new regime from any responsibility of taking this team to the playoffs when they were so close last yr.?

    Must be nice for Reggie to not have to worry about any expectations from the fan base.

    “Awww Reggie, we understand…Al Davis left you with such a mess with those 2 consecutive 8-8 seasons. After all, you had to get rid of a few unproductive players and all. Yeah we know you still have the best running back in the league and your all pro DE and MOST ALL of the same starters who were a defensive stop away from the division…We feel for you Reg. Al Davis left you with nothing but crap. You don’t have to worry about us giving you any pressure”.

    Where was all the understanding when Hue Jackson as 1st yr. head coach had his QB go down as well as his best player and top receivers…and was left with a crappy DC that he did not have the luxury of choosing, and yet he STILL managed 8-8?

    “It’s ok Reggie..you are rebuilding that horrific mess of a team”.

    DJ Johnny,

    Reggie and company know they have to win soon. But the reality of the situation is that anytime you change the management…you are going to get change in the system.

    Reggie came from the Green Bay system, so he’s going to probably take what he learned their and put his spin on it. But it means WCO and developing talent to fit that system and getting coaches that believe it.

    He doesn’t have forever, but I bet he’s got 3 to 4 years to show something.

    The past is irrelevant. Reggie is not going to tie himself to someone elses plan.

    I am sure he shared this with Mark and others during hiring process.

    If Mark wanted to continue Al Davis and Hue Jackson’s program, Mark would have hired a GM that would work well with Hue.

    But he didn’t.

    We were nowhere close to a Wild Card. We needed to win only 2 of the last 5 games of the season, or the two homes games left on scheudle, and we went 1-4.

    ============================

    He’s not getting absolved of anything. We’re just not the kind of short-sighted simpletons who think the solution to losing ONE GAME is firing two coordinators. We’re not like children who can’t wait until Christmas morning, and want Reggie to transform the Raiders into a contender NOW NOW NOW because quite frankly, they weren’t even contenders before.

    Moreover, we know what it takes to actually build a franchise. The Raiders had to shed over $20 million in salary, which resulted in contributors like Routt, Wimbley, Bush, Boss, and Satele leaving. They had to change the culture entirely, starting with ingraining in these players the kind of discipline it takes to be successful in the NFL – and for many of these players, this was the first time they’ve been exposed to that.

    McKenzie had to hire a head coach that could get that message across effectively – and since he operates as a real GM does, he let the head coach choose assistants that he thought he could work with.

    This is a project, and not an easy one.

    I get it, you’re sick of the Raiders losing. We ALL are. But this is how a real franchise operates. It’s going to take a while to set this team up so they can be successful long-term, not just for one or two years.

    The state the organization was before McKenzie took over was not sustainable in any way, nor was Hue Jackson qualified to make sense of that mess.

    Yes the reason I say that is because we are going up against a team that is in somewhat a rebuild mode as well. Rookie qb. If the raiders dont play well.. what makes you think we are gonna go against Ptt, falcons, broncos etc. We have had one week to look at game film. So if you dont notice some changes on the offense like taking shots down field.. not dinkin / stinking then it most likely wont change.

    ——————-

    Yes the reason I say that is because we are going up against a team that is in somewhat a rebuild mode as well. Rookie qb. If the raiders dont play well.. what makes you think we are gonna go against Ptt, falcons, broncos etc. We have had one week to look at game film. So if you dont notice some changes on the offense like taking shots down field.. not dinkin / stinking then it most likely wont change.

    I appreciate this post, but the reason Miami is such a determining factor in how the season plays out is IF we lose this game we’re 0-2 with Pittsburgh and Denver waiting in the wings.

    What chance do u think we have of beating either of them if we can’t take care of Miami?

    I’ve never been sold on Knapp. I know full well what he did the first time around. And as I’ve said before, I don’t think Moore and DHB are good fits for a West Coast passing game.

    But booting Knapp to the curb mid-season isn’t going to make the team any better. And it certainly isn’t a good idea after one game. Hurts morale, destroys the basis for everything the team had worked on thus far, and sends a bad message to any coach the Raiders might be looking to hire as a replacement.

    Is McFadden a good fit for the ZBS?

    ======================

    Hard to say. I don’t see any reason why he can’t be a “one cut and go” type guy. Seems like he has enough talent to flourish in any system.

    People point to his poor output on the ground on Monday as evidence he’s not a good fit, but the Raiders really didn’t have much of an opportunity to lean on their running game. The turnovers took the running game out of the equation, and SD is a very good run defense. It’s not like good run defenses didn’t limit McFadden last year, too.

    But McFadden’s production in the passing game is pretty promising to me. Makes me think that even if the Raiders are facing good run defenses, they can still find a way to get McFadden involved.

    Not sure what to expect v.s. Miami, though. He’s never done well against those Dolphins defenses.

    ===================================

    Coaches aren’t complete morons. I doubt any coach around the league would have a problem working with this offense and taking over for Knapp seeing how he is a complete joke, not to mention would ADJUST their system like Hue did for the players. And no, we should not be looking for players to fit Knapp’s system since his system sucks.

    Fair enough. So your position is that the Raids should stick with Knapp until at least when ? Game 10 ? The entire year ? Makes sense, don’t want to act rashly, but keep in mind it’s a decision that could backfire if the offense continues to languish.

    And since you don’t seem to like Knapp or feel that he runs a scheme conducive to some of our personnel, what makes you think that replacing him isn’t going to make the team better ?

    The ‘morale’ argument can just as easily be made in the other direction. Perhaps a team that doesn’t believe in Knapp, anymore than you apparently do, would have their morale bolstered by his dismissal.

    I wouldn’t worry too much about alienating a prospective OC due to Knapp’s dismissal. I’m pretty sure the Raids can find an eager and well qualified applicant to replace him. It’s a nice high paying gig.

I do remember Ed Donatell getting fired as DC from the Packers after a playoff game for allowing that 3rd & forever play against the Eagles. And after what game was that? I do remember him trying to put Tyler Brayton & Granto Irons in the 3/4 though. As matter of fact, how was the 3/4 looking at that time? About as smart as Knapp putting DMC & Palmer in a offense that is completely opposite of what they do best.

    But I get your point, now that Al is gone, we can hire attractive candidates like Steve Hoffman & Greg Knapp. Thanks for avoiding my other points though about Donatell & Clancy.

    That one play in particular where Shanarat had him rolling to the left – and he is confronted with a LB – sidesteps him by quickly stopping and moving back to his right – and then scans the field and throws a dart all the way up the right sideline – was incredibly difficult and RGIII made it look easy.

    Just a great play that will destroy any defense.

    SO do you remember how great the 3/4 was looking? BTW, that was Ryan’s first gig as a coordinator, we didn’t have the advantage like we do now with Greg Knapp, where we have seen him consistently suck.

    Why is everyone so quick to absolve the new regime from any responsibility of taking this team to the playoffs when they were so close last yr.?

It was because of ONE play he got fired. And Clancy was fired less than a week after his team went to the Super Bowl. I guess it is only unacceptable when Al made a rash decision.

    =======================

    How do you know it was because of one play, and not the body of work they had put together that season? Even if it was because of one play, those organizations at least waited until the season was over. No proof that it was a “rash” decision.

    In my mind, telling a coordinator that he can no longer run his scheme of choice makes him a coordinator in title only. Completely undermines his job as a coach. Bad for morale. Bad for everything the team had worked on to that point.

    San Diego had 32 yds rushing, are you saying McClain gets no credit for that? You don’t have to make the actual tackle to make the play. That’s why you have teammates, and you work together, it called cohesiveness. Something I didn’t see alot of last year. Stats and box scores don’t always tell the whole story. Just my opinion, I’m not even a big fan of McClain, I just thought he made alot of plays Monday night, even if the stat line doesnt show it

    Sure, that’s what a top pick should look like. But we all know many don’t.

    Of course, one game isn’t enough to proclaim RGIII will definitely be another Elway or an all-time great.

    But what was so impressive about that ‘flash’ on the one particular play I referenced was that RGIII in baseball terms (which I know you love) would be a 5 tool player.

    It was a great demonstration of speed, elusiveness, field awareness, poise – and to me, most impressive of all, was the great arm strength and accuracy on the most difficult cross field throw a QB is asked to make.

    I don’t know who Tim Gunn is, nor do I give a sht, but that was a wow moment that really stood out to me.

    kirk morrison was actually pretty good. he got the blame but it was thomas howard and the other LB’s fault. mcclain is a puzz and rarely attacks. just wait and see when he loses his job at the end of the year. and NO ONE gives him a starting job.

    it’s really simple. a good MLB is in the middle of the field with a d-line tying up blockers in front of him. he should make LOTS of tackles sideline to sideline. mcclain isn’t very invlolved, meaning he gets blocked successfully a LOT.

    REINSTATE AL SAUNDERS AS THE PRIMARY PLAY CALLER AND REASSIGN GREG KNAPP TO QB COACH TO HELP TERRELLE PRYOR DEVELOP!!

    THIS IS THE MOST LOGICAL THING TO GET OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE FROM OUR PLAYERS AND STILL HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN THE DIVISION!!!

    biachi, biachi, biachi, you have now gone into Jamista Clown paranoid schizophrenia territory. I am Raider Rob? I mean weed makes people paranoid, but you have gone over the edge. You might want to put down the ganj, go to the hospital and check yourself in. Finally. And while you are doing that, we will create your award for Most Boring Blog Personality. Along with a spiffy certificate, you win a $5 gift certificate to the Olive Garden salad bar. Congrats!

    PM PARTY POSSE N FULL EFFECT

    Brahs, we all know by now that Klas is really Albert Bigelo Puss’s newest super gay sock puppet

    There is ALSO strong suspicion that Nob Minion is actually one of Peemore Bust’s legion of puppets

    How else do you explain him having the most epic meltdown in blog history and stealing Peemore’s “Blog Punching Bag” belt?

    Plus that weak “You’ve been in prison for the last 2 weeks so the blog has been awesome” dud had Peemore’s clammy hands all over it

    Think about it, Blog Brohams. And smoke a phat spliff with the Beeeech Diggity Dawg

    RUFF RUFF GRRRRR MEOW

    **************

    aww. he’s trying really hard to get the blog to like him now. that’s cute.

    for some reason, he thinks if he can tie me in to someone he thinks the blog doesn’t like, he can get them to not like me too.

    meltdown–haha–oh no, i’m melting, i’m melting, what a cruel world. just cuz u say it doesn’t make it so, nimrod.

    and poor klas–now beeech doesn’t like u. poor guy.

    What do you guys think of this trade?

    Brees & Fitzgerald

    for

    Cutler, Jordy & Alfred Morris

    __________________________________________________

    Are you getting the Cutler or giving?

    —-

    Im getting Breez/Fitz

    =========

    Fitz has no QB and Breez is playing ok…on the other hand Cutler is playing like his old self with Marshall and Jordy will be #1 by end of season.

    Do it!

    It should be 0 for the amount of Td’s his offense scores …

    I see I touched a nerve. I am positive RGIII will be the best player in redskin history & is head & shoulders a better player than elway & young at this stage in their careers. Not only is far far more talented, but he also is better at reading defense, manipulating defense,calling audibles, and is far more accurate & polished in the pocket. Any athletic comparison to elway & young would be beyond laughable.

    I am not basing this on 1 game like many on this blog that have yet to have actually see him play, I watched nearly every snap he has taken as a collegiate & pro.

    Madden is right & I wish we could get a guy like that to take our offense into the new football paradigm

    favorite lame thing about beeech (of MANY):

    he says he’s putting together a reggae band and he comes up with RASTA GANJA. LOL! i mean he shoulda just called it WEED DREADLOCKS. come up with two words that are highly associated with reggae and use them. very impressive originality.

    how about MARLEY SPLIFF?
    or JAMAICAN HIGH? oh wait, that could be a great movie title about a couple kids who move to kingston and go to high school there.
