Raiders sign long-snapper among six roster moves
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, September 12th, 2012 at 12:57 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders signed long-snapper Nick Guess, cornerback Coye Francies and defensive lineman Brandon Bair to their practice squad Wednesday.
In turn, they released wide receiver Brandon Carswell, defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga and linebacker Nathan Stupar from their practice squad.
It’s possible that the Raiders will wait until later in the week, when they have a better gauge on the status of regular long-snapper Jon Condo (concussion), to decide whether to sign Guess to their 53-man roster.
Guess was released by the San Diego Chargers on Aug. 27, when the Chargers pared their roster to 75 players. He is from the University of Tennessee.
More later, once we speak with coach Dennis Allen after practice.

I respect your opinion Goldie. I just keep thinking back to last year. What if Bresnehan had been replaced right after his debacle in Buffalo???
Our season might very well have had a story book ending!
8-8 will not win the division this year with Peyton Manning looking like Superman again in Denver.
We were Top 10 in scoring last season…without Mcfadden!

Yep….I totally agree with ya AC GM…100%. Sorry about delay…I was away from my computer.

Nobody had less rushing yards than the Giants last year. Green Bay was 24th the year before. In 2009, The Saints had a top 10 attack that was fueled by their passing attack which was higher. The Steelers were 23rd in rushing yards in 2008. You still think it’s the most important thing on defense is to stop the run in today’s NFL?
===========================================
Yes. Teams will take what you give them, and passing is risky. If you give them 5 yards a carry, they’ll happily run it up the gut game after game on you. These teams developed their great passing offenses BECAUSE so many teams were loading up against the run. Doesn’t mean they won’t run it if we let them.

Yesterday was Pretty shocking to hear guys like Romo and Rod Woodson even papa saying how this system doesnt fit these offensive players. Woodson said he saw DMAC upclose last year and he is a Champ but the ZBS doesnt fit him. Romo said Dmac is a north south runner and is a tack stud.. he needs to find the hole and go.. not this cut back and change zbs. Papa agreed and said Mr. Davis didnt like it at all.
Woodson said players love habit so its gonna take a while for them to change to this system. Im willing to give Knapp one more chance go air it deep this week.

Guys that know me, know I am not a combative poster but I’m having trouble understanding this.
You guys say “rebuilding” to exempt Reggie from any responsibility if the 8-8 team he took over does not do anything this yr.
Shoot, he’s got a free pass w/ u guys.
Why is everyone so quick to absolve the new regime from any responsibility of taking this team to the playoffs when they were so close last yr.?
Must be nice for Reggie to not have to worry about any expectations from the fan base.
“Awww Reggie, we understand…Al Davis left you with such a mess with those 2 consecutive 8-8 seasons. After all, you had to get rid of a few unproductive players and all. Yeah we know you still have the best running back in the league and your all pro DE and MOST ALL of the same starters who were a defensive stop away from the division…We feel for you Reg. Al Davis left you with nothing but crap. You don’t have to worry about us giving you any pressure”.
Where was all the understanding when Hue Jackson as 1st yr. head coach had his QB go down as well as his best player and top receivers…and was left with a crappy DC that he did not have the luxury of choosing, and yet he STILL managed 8-8?
“It’s ok Reggie..you are rebuilding that horrific mess of a team”.

September 12th, 2012 at 1:24 pm
DJ Johnny,
Reggie and company know they have to win soon. But the reality of the situation is that anytime you change the management…you are going to get change in the system.
Reggie came from the Green Bay system, so he’s going to probably take what he learned their and put his spin on it. But it means WCO and developing talent to fit that system and getting coaches that believe it.
He doesn’t have forever, but I bet he’s got 3 to 4 years to show something.
The past is irrelevant. Reggie is not going to tie himself to someone elses plan.
I am sure he shared this with Mark and others during hiring process.
If Mark wanted to continue Al Davis and Hue Jackson’s program, Mark would have hired a GM that would work well with Hue.
But he didn’t.

We were only “close” last year because our division was a hot flipping mess.
We were nowhere close to a Wild Card. We needed to win only 2 of the last 5 games of the season, or the two homes games left on scheudle, and we went 1-4.

He’s not getting absolved of anything. We’re just not the kind of short-sighted simpletons who think the solution to losing ONE GAME is firing two coordinators. We’re not like children who can’t wait until Christmas morning, and want Reggie to transform the Raiders into a contender NOW NOW NOW because quite frankly, they weren’t even contenders before.
Moreover, we know what it takes to actually build a franchise. The Raiders had to shed over $20 million in salary, which resulted in contributors like Routt, Wimbley, Bush, Boss, and Satele leaving. They had to change the culture entirely, starting with ingraining in these players the kind of discipline it takes to be successful in the NFL – and for many of these players, this was the first time they’ve been exposed to that.
McKenzie had to hire a head coach that could get that message across effectively – and since he operates as a real GM does, he let the head coach choose assistants that he thought he could work with.
This is a project, and not an easy one.
I get it, you’re sick of the Raiders losing. We ALL are. But this is how a real franchise operates. It’s going to take a while to set this team up so they can be successful long-term, not just for one or two years.
The state the organization was before McKenzie took over was not sustainable in any way, nor was Hue Jackson qualified to make sense of that mess.

Yes the reason I say that is because we are going up against a team that is in somewhat a rebuild mode as well. Rookie qb. So if you dont notice some changes on the offense like taking shots down field.. not dinkin / stinking then it most likely wont change.

honestly reggie is gonna build this org back up. Just sucks for him because the Raiders have been losing for a long azz time. So when we see Knapps candy azz calling plays it brings us back to that 07 time.
Bottom line is yes its just one game on monday. But us Raider fans are tired of losing and not using our players to full use.

Didn’t we have a Sunday afternoon game against Green Bay last year, that probably had higher rating than a game that started at 10:30 PM EST on a Monday, that we embarassed ourselves much more so than Monday night?
At least we competed on Monday. We flat mailed it in at times last year.
======================================================
The Raiders were sometihng like 7-5 going to Green Bay who was leading. Resurgence of Raiders and the Carson buzz vs. an old school franchise like Green BAy.
The Raiders mailed it in by then. Getting absolutely creamated on tv and embarassing themselves to no end.
Then followed up the next week with anoher epic fail against Miami….then somewhere in there was the Tebow resurrection

As far as the dink and dunk, I think that was more on Palmer read’s than Knapp play-calling.
If everybody were running short routes, than you would have seen them in the picture when we dumped it off to McFadden, but almost everytime he was the only Raider within 10 yards.
Palmer tried to go deep twice by my count, and DHB ran the wrong route and STreater dropped the other.

I appreciate this post, but the reason Miami is such a determining factor in how the season plays out is IF we lose this game we’re 0-2 with Pittsburgh and Denver waiting in the wings.
What chance do u think we have of beating either of them if we can’t take care of Miami?
We will be big underdogs in both Pitt and Denver games and rightfully so.
Lose to Miami and we almost certainly are looking at 0-4 and the season is lost.

Easy.
With Hue as HC, we would not have had access to top-flight up and coming Defensive minded guys like Tarver and DA.
Hue would have brought in the DC equivalent of TJ Houshwhatever or Carson Palmer. Some over-the-hill guy he has been buddies with somewhere else.

Name one team who fired two coordinators mid-season (or for that matter, after ONE GAME), and ended the season with a winning record?
Teams work their butts off to implement schemes in the offseason. Should they just hire someone new and figure it out as they go along? Sounds like one hell of a plan right there.

I would hope Saunders has some input on the gameplan this week. Dennis Allen should INSIST we get more aggressive in our play-calling after Monday night. Saunders has a wealth of knowledge that Knapp should utilize.

I assumed that was the reason they kept Saunders around. Now my assumption has changed to hope.

Dennis Allen isn’t stupid, no way we see a repeat of Monday. When he was with the Saint’s his secondary practiced against Drew Brees for crying out loud. He knows you can’t win being ultra conservative.

..but….good organizations don’t shy away from making the bold decisions that need to be made when it’s obvious things they are doing aren’t working.
Knapp was a mistake from the start. A horrible one.
I don’t think it is out of order to keep the guy as the OC but…give playcalling duties to the more experienced Saunders.
Knapp does not have a great history of success in which to merit unyielding trust.
Saunders is on staff right now. What is wrong with utilizing him more?

OK. But here’s something you should know.
There were many here who criticized the Knapp hiring when it occured. There are many here who don’t want Knapp canned solely bcz of what went down Mon nite. They’re basing the call for his dismissal based on his previous performances and history. The Mon night game merely served to verify what they’ve been saying for a long time now.
You also might want to consider that in a few weeks you’ll be convinced that the ’simpletons’ were correct all along and that Knapp needs to go.

I’ve never been sold on Knapp. I know full well what he did the first time around. And as I’ve said before, I don’t think Moore and DHB are good fits for a West Coast passing game.
But booting Knapp to the curb mid-season isn’t going to make the team any better. And it certainly isn’t a good idea after one game. Hurts morale, destroys the basis for everything the team had worked on thus far, and sends a bad message to any coach the Raiders might be looking to hire as a replacement.

Now, if Knapp’s presence alone starts hurting team morale – arguments with players, benching guys who are performing well because of his ego – ie Todd Haley s*** – then I can see cutting ties with him early on.
At this point? Makes no sense for the team. Would be a decision based solely on emotions, which is why the team obviously hasn’t gone that route.

======================
Hard to say. I don’t see any reason why he can’t be a “one cut and go” type guy. Seems like he has enough talent to flourish in any system.
People point to his poor output on the ground on Monday as evidence he’s not a good fit, but the Raiders really didn’t have much of an opportunity to lean on their running game. The turnovers took the running game out of the equation, and SD is a very good run defense. It’s not like good run defenses didn’t limit McFadden last year, too.
But McFadden’s production in the passing game is pretty promising to me. Makes me think that even if the Raiders are facing good run defenses, they can still find a way to get McFadden involved.
Not sure what to expect v.s. Miami, though. He’s never done well against those Dolphins defenses.

Look man, I wasn’t trying to attack you personally, I just have a hard time excepting the I’m a bigger fan than you attitude some on here have. Especially when backing it up with the “I go to the games” theory.
Back when I lived in NorCal, I once went to EVERY SINGLE GAME most up on Mt. Davis, from 98-03. Even some preseason games. All the postseason games.
I would often drive into Livermore from Chico, with $12, enough to get 2 beers and hopefully mooch off my uncles Bart Pass and hopefully have enough gas in the Geo Prizm to make it home to Chico.
I wasn’t a bigger fan at that time, than I am now, simply because I went to the games. In fact I would say I am probably much more knowledgeable now than I was then.

There is no difference between letting the numbers speak for themselves when it comes to Knapp and our Raiders. Knapp has a history of sucking and so do the Raiders the past 10 years? I keep wanting to forget…
So again, no difference between us and the the media; Knapp and his offensive rankings in the past, haven’t sold anyone as to why he should be thought of as someone that will improve our offense. I see why one can conclude that we would suck again and why the media never gives us credit…
My little meltdown. =)

The ZBS looks weak.
Palmer played well enough to win. The pass before the half almost picked was bad, he should have found Hagan for TD before half there. Would have been big. Overall tho you could tell Palmer wasn’t forcing the same throws as usual.
Taiwan Jones fumble was a BAD bad bad turining point.
and the TWO blocked punts.
Overall Pat Lee looked bad and the loss of Bartell is not good.
Heck, I even seen a few bad yellow flags out there.
No excuses against the fins. NONE. 0-2 would be danger with our schedule.
POSITIVES:
WHEELER
SEYMOUR, RUN D.

===================================
Coaches aren’t complete morons. I doubt any coach around the league would have a problem working with this offense and taking over for Knapp seeing how he is a complete joke, not to mention would ADJUST their system like Hue did for the players. And no, we should not be looking for players to fit Knapp’s system since his system sucks.
Dennis Allen’s book is too soon to be written, but he fu**ed up BIG time when he scrapped the offense & hired Knapp.

Fair enough. So your position is that the Raids should stick with Knapp until at least when ? Game 10 ? The entire year ? Makes sense, don’t want to act rashly, but keep in mind it’s a decision that could backfire if the offense continues to languish.
And since you don’t seem to like Knapp or feel that he runs a scheme conducive to some of our personnel, what makes you think that replacing him isn’t going to make the team better ?
The ‘morale’ argument can just as easily be made in the other direction. Perhaps a team that doesn’t believe in Knapp, anymore than you apparently do, would have their morale bolstered by his dismissal.
I wouldn’t worry too much about alienating a prospective OC due to Knapp’s dismissal. I’m pretty sure the Raids can find an eager and well qualified applicant to replace him. It’s a nice high paying gig.

You don’t think it sends a bad message to fire a coordinator after one poor performance by his offense? It makes the team management look like amateurs – it makes them look like overly emotional fans who make rash decisions. It’s the same reason coordinators didn’t want to work under Al Davis – they don’t want someone who is going to fire or demote them after one gameplan doesn’t go as expected.

Agreed on the first point.
I would prefer seeing DHB in the slot more. I don’t think he’s quite physical enough or refined in his timing to win his matchups outside the hashes consistently. Still seems to have a problem getting body position on defenders. Definitely needs to see more plays that allow him to work in open space.

Anybody see the play Bartell got hurt on? I remember reading the article last week about Wheeler’s penchant for friendly fire, and could’ve swore he took out Bartell on a play but wasn’t sure. If anyone can take a look and satisfy my curiosity it would be greatly appreciated.
Side Note: Yeah I was disappointed with our performance, but I’m trying to remain positive.
Positives:
-Best game I’ve seen from McClain as a Raider. He was in the right gap more often than not and I thought he worked well with Burris and the ends. Had some good tackles too and also forced the ball carrier into other defenders several times. I was a big critic of his last season so I gotta give credit where its due. I was watching him alot too on Monday
-Thought S. Spencer looked pretty good
-Burris exceeded my expectations for a rookie starting LB. Only one game, but its a foundation to build on.
- Lechler isn’t in a wheelchair, which is what I was expecting after that flip on the blocked punt
-Defense has potential. If our defense continues to get better and plays like it did on Monday, we will be alright even with Knapp’s dink and dunk scheme

“Goethel had not snapped in a game since high school and did only “limited work” before practice, as team officials gingerly put it. The result? He bounced his first snap to punter Shane Lechler, who was summarily crushed by defenders. Lechler moved up a few steps for attempt No. 2 — and had his punt blocked. Goethel’s third try never left the ground. It just rolled to Lechler.
Three botched snaps in a row!

Now you are re-writing history. Since when did Al fire someone after “one” game plan? I do remember Ed Donatell getting fired as DC from the Packers after a playoff game for allowing that 3rd & forever play against the Eagles. Clancy Pendergast was fired less than a week after Arizona went to the SuperBowl.
And no, I don’t want an OC to come in here mid-season. There is ALREADY a coordinator on staff that could & should of took over for Hue.

I don’t want to see the play calling we saw against the Chargers, rear it’s ugly head up again, against the Dolphins. If this happens the thought of D.A not knowing wtf he’s doing, might start plaguing my thoughts. And after what game was that? I do remember him trying to put Tyler Brayton & Granto Irons in the 3/4 though. As matter of fact, how was the 3/4 looking at that time? About as smart as Knapp putting DMC & Palmer in a offense that is completely opposite of what they do best.
But I get your point, now that Al is gone, we can hire attractive candidates like Steve Hoffman & Greg Knapp. Thanks for avoiding my other points though about Donatell & Clancy.
September 12th, 2012 at 2:53 pm
Didn’t have many doubts that RGIII would do well in the pros. Had a slight concern he might take a few hits moving around and he doesn’t have great size.
But I gotta say, I can’t believe how good he looked.
That one play in particular where Shanarat had him rolling to the left – and he is confronted with a LB – sidesteps him by quickly stopping and moving back to his right – and then scans the field and throws a dart all the way up the right sideline – was incredibly difficult and RGIII made it look easy.
Just a great play that will destroy any defense.
Definitely a wow moment.

Forced Rob Ryan to scrap the 3-4.
========================
===================
After the first game, if I remember correctly. Sure, Brayton and Irons weren’t Harrison and Woodley. But did the defense improve after Al forced Rob Ryan to change his scheme? The record suggests otherwise.
With Donatell and Pendergast, those are entirely different situations. They were fired after the season, not one game into it.

That’s why I always debate/argue, that Jamarcus wasn’t really all that talented to begin with.
He had a strong arm, but did he even have the strongest arm? Maybe, but if so not by much.
Meanwhile, he was slow, average athletically, awful accuracy, and no touch on his intermediate throws. Those are all “skills” that he didn’t possess much of.

SO do you remember how great the 3/4 was looking? BTW, that was Ryan’s first gig as a coordinator, we didn’t have the advantage like we do now with Greg Knapp, where we have seen him consistently suck.
Your words were that Al would fire or demote a guy after one game plan and you use Ryan as an example who KEPT his job….Whoppety do that Donatell was fired after the season. It was because of ONE play he got fired. And Clancy was fired less than a week after his team went to the Super Bowl. I guess it is only unacceptable when Al made a rash decision.

Greatest Redskin ever? don’t know about that. I will tell you what I do know tho, and that is the league will catch up with these players. Rarely do they not. No one had ANY tape of RGIII. Wait til the 5th or 6th game and let’s see what happens. The exact same thing happened to Cam last year. The lst four games he tore sh** up. Then the league caught up to him. John Madden and Ammo for Mistic…
“This is probably early, too stupid, too soon,” John Madden told the KCBS morning crew, but “I was watching him and I said ‘RGIII is the best player in the NFL.’”
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan’s game plan relied on the read-option Griffin played in high school and mastered in college at Baylor.
“I think that whole idea is the reason that more young quarterbacks can come in and not only play early, but play well early and win,” the former coach said. “He reminded me a lot of a Tim Tebow that could pass…He may hand the ball to the runner, he may keep the ball and run himself or he may keep the ball, run himself and then throw it. It really puts the defense in a place and make them stay in place.”

***********************
mistic is dead. he couldn’t take it. but he wouldn’t take the word of a cracker would he?
September 12th, 2012 at 3:31 pm
Your words were that Al would fire or demote a guy after one game plan and you use Ryan as an example who KEPT his job….Whoppety do that Donatell was fired after the season. It was because of ONE play he got fired. And Clancy was fired less than a week after his team went to the Super Bowl. I guess it is only unacceptable when Al made a rash decision.
=======================
How do you know it was because of one play, and not the body of work they had put together that season? Even if it was because of one play, those organizations at least waited until the season was over. No proof that it was a “rash” decision.
In my mind, telling a coordinator that he can no longer run his scheme of choice makes him a coordinator in title only. Completely undermines his job as a coach. Bad for morale. Bad for everything the team had worked on to that point.

that says a lot, since, after making a couple really nice plays early, he ended up with 5 total tackles. dude disappeared like a coward.
***************
San Diego had 32 yds rushing, are you saying McClain gets no credit for that? You don’t have to make the actual tackle to make the play. That’s why you have teammates, and you work together, it called cohesiveness. Something I didn’t see alot of last year. Stats and box scores don’t always tell the whole story. Just my opinion, I’m not even a big fan of McClain, I just thought he made alot of plays Monday night, even if the stat line doesnt show it
September 12th, 2012 at 3:33 pm
The list of bad black quarterbacks is not as long as the list of bad white quarterbacks because we haven’t provided them the opportunity to fail historically. The statistics will even out going forward as both groups are given an equal chance to fail or succeed. And I’m reasonably sure the numbers will balance out.

Firing Knapp or takin away his play callin is the same thing to me, I think thats how most people feel that are on the fire Knapp wagon, like me. I doubt we actually fire him, but I have no doubt if he calls a schitty game the next couple weeks he will not be calling plays anymore. We are lucky to have Saunders on staff, he knows these players and what they are good at, probably more so than Knapp. I hope Knapp can get his head out of his @ss and call a damn good come Sunday and the offense can get on a roll from there.
September 12th, 2012 at 3:35 pm
That’s what a top pick is supposed to look like, even if they just “flash” from time to time.
=================================================
Sure, that’s what a top pick should look like. But we all know many don’t.
Of course, one game isn’t enough to proclaim RGIII will definitely be another Elway or an all-time great.
But what was so impressive about that ‘flash’ on the one particular play I referenced was that RGIII in baseball terms (which I know you love) would be a 5 tool player.
It was a great demonstration of speed, elusiveness, field awareness, poise – and to me, most impressive of all, was the great arm strength and accuracy on the most difficult cross field throw a QB is asked to make.
I don’t know who Tim Gunn is, nor do I give a sht, but that was a wow moment that really stood out to me.

Veldheer was the only offensive lineman who did his job on Monday night.
Pass protection wasn’t bad outside of Barnes and a couple plays from Brisiel, but Parsons in particular was getting destroyed in the run game.

kirk morrison was actually pretty good. he got the blame but it was thomas howard and the other LB’s fault. mcclain is a puzz and rarely attacks. just wait and see when he loses his job at the end of the year. and NO ONE gives him a starting job.
it’s really simple. a good MLB is in the middle of the field with a d-line tying up blockers in front of him. he should make LOTS of tackles sideline to sideline. mcclain isn’t very invlolved, meaning he gets blocked successfully a LOT.
September 12th, 2012 at 3:50 pm
Expect the offense to be more vertical Sunday, count on it .

The entire transition of the offense was handled improperly.
The majority of our weapons on offense including the QB were drafted or acquired using the Al Davis, vertical, stretch the field, power scheme philosophy.
We do not have the player personnel to fully implement what Knapp is trying to do!
Saunders should have been made the OC with Knapp as HIS adviser, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!!!
Then Knapp’s plan could be slowly integrated over the next season or two as we acquire the best players to implement that scheme!
This entire thing was handled completely AZZ BACKWARDS from the start!!!

Not only is far far more talented, but he also is better at reading defense, manipulating defense, calling audibles, and is far more accurate & polished in the pocket. Any athletic comparison to elway & young would be beyond laughable.
I am not basing this on 1 game like many on this blog that have yet to have actually see him play, I watched nearly every snap he has taken as a collegiate & pro.
