Huff taking reps at cornerback
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, September 19th, 2012 at 11:58 am in Oakland Raiders.
Career free safety Michael Huff is taking reps at cornerback in practice today in another sign of the Raiders’ dearth of healthy, experienced cornerbacks.
The Raiders are without season-opening starters Ron Bartell (shoulder) and Shawntae Spencer (foot) because of injuries suffered in the first two games.
They signed Brandian Ross from the Green Bay Packers practice squad earlier today as a means of adding some depth. Huff is just another option as the Raiders prepare for a game against the pass-happy Pittsburgh Steelers.
Huff played some cornerback in college, as well as on occasion during his seven-season NFL career. It remains to be seen how much he’ll actually play against the Steelers or the rest of the season.
For now, the projected starters at cornerback are Pat Lee and Joselio Hanson, who also are working there today. Another option is to sign Chimdi Chekwa from the practice squad.
– As expected, Spencer and right offensive tackle Khalif Barnes (groin) aren’t practicing today. Coach Dennis Allen said there’s the potential for both players to miss some time on the heels of their injuries against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
– Ross is practicing today, a few hours after signing with the Raiders. He is wearing No. 29.
– Middle linebacker Rolando McClain and backup cornerback Coye Francies weren’t participating in practice or the stretching during the media access window.
We won’t know about their status until speaking with Allen in about two hours.

The interior of the Raiders line is getting manhandled. It wasn’t nearly so bad in the lst game, and lets face it Solai is a load. But it might be becoming painfully obvious that Wisnieweski is not very good.

Cheers! Time to hit the back 9

I support Reggie McKenzie as long as he’s with the team. Like the pedigree. The Ron Wolf connection. If Reggie decides Greg Knapp is not the fit for his system, or if he allows Dennis Allen to make that decision, I’m with it. What I don’t want to see Reggie do is make a decision based upon the protests of bitter fans who are just mad that Al’s old system is being overhauled. Thankfully, those cries seem to fall on deaf ears, as they should, otherwise Mark Davis never would have fired Hue Jackson in the first place.
September 19th, 2012 at 12:09 pm
You know Al spent like every other draft pick on a freaking cornerback. None of them are on the roster. Of course if Al picked good cornerbacks in the first place, he wouldn’t need to burn some many draft picks on conerbacks in the second place.
I do not know what is going to happen to my beloved Raiders this season. We can’t be as bad as Game 1 & 2 have shown them to be. Can’t be.
God speed to Reggie and Dennis. I hope the offense does not got to bed, take a Knapp and never wake up.
September 19th, 2012 at 12:10 pm
I have been watching/reading/listening all year to OTAs, minicamps, TC, PS, and I still can’t keep up with our roster. Ross?
Wtf are our bu cbs now?

It’s not the right time to be sober
Now the idiots have taken over
Spreading like a social cancer, is there an answer?
The Raider Nation’s tempers are roasting
Tell me why and how are all the stupid people posting
Watson, it’s really elementary
The Reggie revolution
Has flipped the b!tch on Al’s old solution
The front office and coaches are being thwarted, ostracized, what a bummer
The Nation keeps getting dumber
Insensitivity is standard and faith is being fancied over reason
Al’s rolling over in his coffin
His “athletes” are screwing up even more often
Hue’s gone and now everything seems to be reversing, and it’s worsening
Someone flopped a steamer in the Raider gene pool
Now angry mob mentality’s no longer the exception, it’s the rule
And I’m starting to feel a lot like Charlton Heston
Stranded on a primate planet
Apes and orangutans that ran it to the ground
With generals and the armies that obeyed them
Followers following fables
Philosophies that enable them to rule without regard
There’s no point for breaking down the tape when ignorance is celebrated
Football scientists get the same one vote as some ArmChair inbred
Majority rule, don’t work in mental institutions
Sometimes the smallest softest voice carries the grand biggest solutions
What are we left with?
A Raider Nation of change-fearing Al loyalists
Who feel it’s their duty to blame the coaches once again
Pass on Al’s traditions
How to get ahead blindly
And prosper via simpleton culture
The idiots are taking over
The idiots are taking over
The idiots are taking over

Huff to Corner, Gio To Free, Branch at Strong, New Guy opposite Huff, Lee on the Slot…
D-Line has to step up and get to Ben. He will hold the ball for an eternity, and when he throws it up for grabs, ONE of these guys has GOT to get his head around and make a play on it.
Turnovers will win this game.

Now he is hurt again…what a waste of talent and ability.

Just traded Gronk for Big Ben and Dwyer in my fantasy league. Expecting huge numbers from them both. Big Ben big first half numbers, 250yds 3 TD’s. Dwyer solid numbers in second half clock eating mode, 75 yds on 16 carries, 1 TD. That way when we lose, I’ll have atleast won a meaningless Fantasy game. Of course I sure as hell hope I’m dead wrong!!

How times have changed…went back into the archives of this blog and was looking at the posts after we beat Chicago to go 7-4. Posts were talking about how we put up 25 pts on a stingy Bear def without our starting RB and with our top two WRs, with a new QB to boot…
The talk in this blog was concerned with our bright future and how Hue just needed a competent DC after the year ended. We were talking about playoff scenarios and how we could get a home playoff game.
Now all of us are in this dreadful place where we are looking for our first win with an offense with almost the same personnel that is avg 13 pts a game and DMC is avg 2 yds a carry.

Seriously, need something else to route for in this matchup. Gronks 15 points is a shadow to the 45 points Big Ben and dwyer will give me. Keep in mind I have Dmac and now charles starting with dwyer at flex. With Tamme or Keller at TE. I like my chances! Raideraholic,
Yes, I’m watching the same games you are. And in game one I saw an injured long snapper with no backup on the roster, which would doom the ‘85 Bears, let alone us.
In game two I saw an offense where seemingly most of our star players were just off. Palmer was 50%, he’d missed guys who were wide open all day. McFadden took a pass right off the numbers on a play that would have been a touchdown, a pivotal touchdown in a game that was close and where momentum was everything. The play calling is not be blame in these instances.
———————–
Honestly, I hope the problems we had over the last couple games are correctable. Nothing I would love more than to see a great underdog story. I think are problems are unfortunetley pretty deep. Play calling is part of it but not all of it. As you said there has been poor execution as well.
I would like to just say the SD game would have been different with Condo and Maybe the Raiders were just gassed from the Humidity on sunday. I just get the impression if it’s not one thing it’s going to be another.
I have been a fan for a long time, and as you know this last decade can really suck the kool aid out of people if you know what I mean.
Appreciate your positivity, I just need to see it translate on Sundays.

Here’s my fantasy tip of the week. Pick up Heath Miller. He’s a lock for at least one TD and maybe two TD’s. Roethelisberger is going to lock in on him. Pick him up off waivers or buy him low now.

We are in a 2 year turn period.
Reggie revealed that himself when he said he would only sign a WR who would be on the team next year.
The next 2 years are about shaping the roster & not tying up money in old players.

Damn this sux!!! sigh……

______________________________________________________
Seymour Bush you are an idiot of epic proportions.
It is not about Hue Jackson. It is about the scheme and principles on the field that he was a part of, and had success with.
Just like across the water in San Fran Sissy-co. Despite their terrible record at the time, they fired Mike Singletary, but KEPT the foundation that he laid on defense and just built upon it! Then they hired Harbaugh, an offensive mind, to shore up the area they were weaker in which was the OFFENSE!
That is EXACTLY what we should have done here in Oakland!
I don’t care if Reggie wanted to keep Hue or not. But they should have built upon the offensive foundation that had been laid, with a healthy Mcfadden, sound O-line blocking, and a few additional pieces that continued to BUILD UPON THAT OFFENSIVE FOUNDATION!
Then they could have focused the rest of their attention on the defense.
Instead of rebuilding, we would have been on the verge of an AFC Championship, just like San Fran did in the NFC last year.
Man you really are an idiot…smh.

I can see Division realignment in order to survive mainly in baseball because of how much they travel but the NFL may have to resort to wild tactics in order to survive the greater depression that is ongoing.
I think that would be great to have A western football league and an eastern division, then divide those up into maybe two, maybe three and have the champs meet in the playoffs untill we have a east vrs west superbowl
West coast divison football
Raiders
Buttminers
Discharge
Seaturds
Roadrunners
That would build up awesome rivalries along the coast and we can be as divided and angry as we are as subjects of the king
Might have to let the Mules or Squaws in but no more travel then that.

Seymour, notice I did not mention Hue in my original post. What we are saying is that we should have built around our offense. Even though it was “mediocre”, at least it was respectable and had some positive aspects about it to build around.
Al Saunders could have easily been put in place to have some consistency on the offensive side of the ball while we re-tooled our completely inept defense. (what arnchair is trying to say). Even if we had a 18-20th ranked defense we would be fine with that offense from last year.
That fact that our new leadership can’t see that has me a little worried.

Here is the facts that most of you simpletons can’t grasp. Reggie and Allen have a vision of what the want to build, a direction they are traveling. They aren’t concerned with pleasing the simple judgmental NOW NOW NOW fans. They are building to their vision, and realize it will take time. They don’t give a sh1t about mortgaging the future to win tomorrow. They will NEVER do that. In the 3 years when this team has been built from the ground up into a perenial contender like GB or NE or PIT or Bal you guys will be nominating Reggie and DA for pres and vp of the country. Relax, take your lumps, and know that for the first time in 30 year there is actual light at the end of the tunnel.

As much as it pains me to say it, the nfl and fans of others teams think we are a complete joke of a franchise. Try and keep up ok pre-schooler?
The offense and special teams were the strengths of the team. The offense was not PERFECT, but it was light years ahead of the defense, DESPITE massive injuries to that side of the ball.
The o-line was playing GOOD with Veldheer, Carlisle, Wiz2, Barksdale, Khalif Barnes….basically the same freakin O-LINE except for Breisel! Mcfadden when healthy was leading entire league in rushing!
So THAT is what rational Raider fans wanted to keep!
The defense needed a complete overhaul. Not the offense.

Look at those deep passes in buffalo to DMOORE.. who remember that reverse to DMAC in the JETS game ? the DMOORE reverse. UTALIZE the speed. Now Routte DVD were the first guy to be let go. Who’s next? DHB? FORD? DMAC?

It is not about Hue Jackson. It is about the scheme and principles on the field that he was a part of, and had success with.
========================================
ArmChair what scheme did you want to keep? The mediocre offense, or the terrible defense? So, you are OK with 8-8? The difference between you and I is you talk but you don’t think. You claim to be a Raider but you’re are the worst kind of Raider. The ones we don’t need. You ever heard of the words “Pride and Poise”? Well, you have no poise. You are falling apart in front of our eyes and throwing a hissy like a two year old. Sad to be you honey.
—————–
Seymour, notice I did not mention Hue in my original post. What we are saying is that we should have built around our offense. Even though it was “mediocre”, at least it was respectable and had some positive aspects about it to build around.
Al Saunders could have easily been put in place to have some consistency on the offensive side of the ball while we re-tooled our completely inept defense. (what arnchair is trying to say). Even if we had a 18-20th ranked defense we would be fine with that offense from last year.
That fact that our new leadership can’t see that has me a little worried.
=============================================
The point I made a few days ago is that is not going to happen. Reggie MacKenzie was brought here because he was part of an organization that knew how to win. We don’t know how to win or what it takes to win. He was granted free reign to do the things he felt we needed to do to not only win one game, but win it all, and be competitive year after year.
lst and foremost: develop a WCO with a zone blocking scheme. It is what they ran in Green Bay for years and was successful. In fact, he was 15-1 with it just last year. Next, install a multiple front, multiple use defensive scheme. So, he needed to find like minded guys. He got Dennis Allen, Allen got the rest.
This isn’t about trying to win it all this year. The org is about putting tried and true systems in place so they can be competitive year in and year out. If we went with what you guys want, we probably would be 7-9, maybe 8-8 again. Then what do we do next year? Try the same old misfit, mispatched deals? Isn’t that the definition of insanity? Doing the same tired played out thing again and again?

As far as wanting results now, we are in a league where things can turn fast. Whiners went from 6-10 to s-bowl coontenders in one year, so its possible.
And dont tell me that 3 years from now Greg Knapp is still a part of our “vision” because his O will still suck 3 yrs down the road. None of his offenses will be associated with any perennial contender on any team, his track record proves it.

——————————————————-
The more concerning fact: Already facing zero sellouts for the next 14 home games in the 2-3 year rebuild process. This can only mean no Raiders In Oakland. If this is by design, could only be classified as conspiracy at this point. But if the Raiders leave Oakland. I leave the Raiders. You care not, I know. But I do care. That is why I’m frustrated. The management could have traded away contracts in the offseason, KELLY/SEYMOUR/HUFF/DMAC/ and immediately fetched picks and development players that we could have carried into the preseason for this new direction. Instead we’ll likely let all these guys walk, and receive zip. This is what stable/winning Franchises do. Instead we absorbed everything, and are putting the worst players on the field now. It’s a piss poor approach. But I’m not GM. Just a fan. But i feel the most important thing should be that the product represent the home base proudly, yes NOW NOW NOW! Do I expect a super bowl, of course not. I do expect competitive contests. I’m tired of being the laughing stock of the league, Raiders Fans are comical to everyone else. This offends me. Thank you bro. You get it. This is why I’m so mad. We need as much positivity around the Raiders as possible right now, when there are other forces trying to take our team away from their home, Oakland.
This is why a 3 year rebuild can’t be allowed to happen. If the looses mount, and the blackouts reappear, we might lose our team to somewhere else, and that cannot be allowed to happen.
But these clowns on here, who have no vested interest in Oakland, our community, or the rich and storied history of the Oakland Raiders, have no idea what we are talking about.
Or maybe they do….I agree with you Bay2LA. This whole thing has the stench of a conspiracy. Otherwise it makes absolutely no sense.

They kept the scheme that was working and that they had the PLAYERS for!
The Raiders had players suited for a Power downhill blocking scheme , but then went and hired a zone blocking coach.
On top of that they didn’t even hire a top tier zone blocking person to be the OC, they hired the perennial poster boy for demotion, Greg Knapp.

They are tearing the sucka apart. Reggie was hamstrung (pardon the pun) with no draft choices, cap hell, and some wack players getting paid a ton. The number one thing they are going to do is implement their systems. That is number uno! The number two thing they are going to do is see if ANY of the current roster fits those systems. Number three is find players that DO FIT those systems over time. This is in direct opposition to what we have had here, which is Davis slamming guys in whether they fit the system or not. Yes, our offense was avg, I do agree with you on that.
But Seymour / DA, wouldn’t it make more sense to build on an avg offense than to take it back to abyssmal? Which is what we are. To even get back to avg is going to take a while.
It was avg. last year but with another year under our belts / full training camp/ and with Carson having a full offseason it could have been a top 10 off IMO.

In school, which these clowns clearly never graduated from, a C is a couple of homework assignments away from a B-.
Look at the New York Giants. They were ONE GAME better than us and went on win the Superbowl.
So the smart thing to do was build UPON our offense, not completely dismantle it!
But again, they don’t teach this type of logic in Day Care…

DAV,
Let’s just say I’m outta the kool aid crowd.
I think this team has 5 potential STUDS at their positions on offense in Ausberry, D Moore, Reece, Wiz, and Veldheer.
I think our front 7 (including the rotational players) is pretty solid. I think Curry is the speed off the edge we are missing.
Secondary is a flat out mess. Bartell and Spencer not working out is killing us. Underwood injury was crucial last game of the preseason. Was NEVER a Branch fan. He gives up WAY too many big plays. I realize he’s still learning the position, but he’s a perfect example of JFB’s line of thinking …Draft a damn S to play S!!!!
Knapp not finding a way to feature Aus and Reece is a complete headscratcher.
How our OGs can be so terrible is baffling.
Move Wiz back to LG, start Bergstrom at RG, and start Parsons at C.

Problem was, we had the SAME problems last year that we are having this year. QBs missing open receivers, receivers running bad routes, turnovers, and bad oline play.
———————————–
One improvement so far this season: fewer false starts and illegal motion.
——————————————————-
yes, but is the emphasis for more desciplened play stripped the team of it’s fire? Penalties are down it seems, but so is intensity, and Raider bravado. Could just be replacement refs too, which of course gives nod to the ol ref conspiracy against the Raiders, as these replacements aren’t as deeply rooted. Honestly, I take the penalties if it came with a constant pissed of team, it was always the damn Route PI calls that killed me, and those were a product of lazy coverage.

This is what stable/winning Franchises do
**********
Unfortunately this is not true, Al Davis had those contracts with guaranteed bonus money to lessen the cap hits, trading those players away wouldn’t have alleviated any of our problems. We got rid of Routt and Wimbley, you think those guys weren’t talented enought to net us some picks? Sure, but no one would trade for those ridiculous AD contracts.
The biggest problem in here is the common fan’s lack of knowledge on business management in general, and more specifically the management of an NFL franchise as a business. They are unable to understand the magnitude of the hole AD dug us, and therefore cant understand that it cant be climbed out of in a single offseason.

There have actually been MORE changes on offense, which was the side of the ball actually showing progress, than there have been on DEFENSE, which actually STUNK!
If Tarver had tried to implement a 3-4 defensive scheme with our current personnel, everyone would be up in arms saying that we don’t have the linebackers and NT needed to play an effective 3-4 defense.
However, on offense we have these SAME clowns supporting a switch to a zone blocking scheme and west coast offense, when we don’t have the QB, O-linemen or receivers to play that kind of scheme effectively.

I can relate for sure, although I haven’t any divisional foes here in Oregon, mostly SeaCock fans, so I’m lucky there. But opposing fans clowning all the time sucks when your team can’t pick a fan up. I also have to tolerate the Oregon Ducks Fans, which are quite similar to seasonal choker fans. I’m a Beaver fan, and hate the ducks! But Beavers have slipped into irrelevancy over the past few years. Here’s another question for Seymour Bush the Dummy:
With 4 out of the 5 offensive lineman being exactly the same as last year, and with a healthy Mcfadden:
Why is Mcfadden averaging 2 yds a carry, whereas last season at this same time he was averaging over 5 yards a carry?
Is it the players or scheme? Remember 4 out of the 5 starters on the O-line are exactly the same as last year.
I’ll wait.

Allen and Tarver have no talent to work with. The Raiders were supposed to be a blitzing team this year with multiple formations but the lack of talent at the CB spot won’t allow it.
They have to keep everyone back in coverage and hope to get pressure with front four.
The coaches have to scheme according to what the defense is capable of handling. This defense can’t handle much.

hey guys, maybe just maybe, we need to give some credit to the chargers and dolphins defenses. they might be pretty good.
and it’s our run offense that is the biggest problem, as well as our line in general. palmer is playing great.
no pass rush, bad corners, and the worst MLB in football also hurt.
——————————————————-
I think the Dolphins Run D was great, Chargers too. But I still believe the offense will get it going once the season rolls along. What I still cannot explain is the defense and the Mad Chemist, as well as a defensive minded head coach allowing Hartline, yeah Brian Hartline career numbers on 1 route in the route tree. Houston the prior week was rejecting Tannehills 3 step drop passes left and right, yet we provided no pocket pressure a few plays aside, and gave up 15 yard buffers to that bum Hartline. This is my concern becasue it’s simply un-explainable in common and basic football talk.

Dont even bother asking East, they will just come up with some BS answer that we are building for the future. Which doesn’t make sense because we could have been on to something this year.
That’s what I thought we were doing on offense the last two years, REBUILD and laying the foundation, and this year we could have been dangerous. Now we are just further behind everyone else, like always.

There is no sure thing that we will be any good in the future. We could be just a team with a depleted roster of what we use to have with the core guys gone.. and Mckenzie and Allen out.
50/50 I hope for a contending team .. cuz we are stuck with Knapp/ Allen (still wonder ) and mckenzie for now
——-
Well said…I dont get why people think we will automatically be good in 3 yrs. You have to capitalize on your teams talents RIGHT NOW.
Sh!t, in three years we will have WAISTED all of DMC’s prime years. There are no guarantees 3 years from now.

You see some coaches chose a scheme to fit the players on its roster and some coaches force a scheme on a group of players regardless of whether it fits or not.
===========================================
Exactly. And what we are arguing about is Gruden came to Tampa and kept the defense intact. Dungy went to Indy and kept the offense basically intact. Those units were solid units. Our units suck. Unless you think mediocrity is good and you like to suck.

——————————————————-
I can admit I was not aware of those contracts being as such. And can also admit I’m not well versed on the knowledge of sports franchise financials. It’s simply not my business to know and nothing I plan on taking up any time soon. I think the prospect of turning GM or Oakland Raiders Book keeper is quite slim. Having said that, I’m sure cap hits aside, or required spending. My point being, if the players on the roster do not fit the desired schemes. Why not be proactive? Wasn’t Dmac’s success last time under Knapp well documented? He was tradable, and would have gotten value for him. Regardless, I do doubt the lack of knowledge in regards to finances and contracts is the biggest problem here, from what I read it’s more of an obsession of blame, and what if’s that ail most posts and that it gives no justice to regression from two 8-8 campaigns.

Yeah bro I know, they suck and could tell as much. But seriously, coaches coach, players play. If I’m coaching. I do not let my sucky corners provide 15 yard buffers on 3rd and 4. If I’m managing, I do not allow myself to find replacement corners amungst other garbage players, or start the season with vets who lack little talent, thats all. I have to believe a bit more could have been done prior, whether it’s gameplanning, adjustments or roster creation. It’s concerning that we all knew corner lacked depth and talent, and now we are scraping by each week now with bums. Sucks.

Why do pple seem to forget how much our offense went thru last season?
Starting QB= IR
Starting RB=done for the year
WRs= injuries all year, except for DHB
New QB brought in midyear learning on the fly
And we still managed to rank 16th in scoring, I think around 22 pts a game, not too shabby. That is pretty impressive in my opinion.
Dont even get me started on the run offense. No comparison plain and simple. 7th > 31st, enough said. Until we are proven otherwise, I will keep bringing it up.

McFadden is one of the most explosive players in the league. In 2010 he led all running backs with 14 rushes of 20 yards or more. In 2011 he was 12th as had 8 rushes of 20 yards or more in only six full games played. In the last two years he’s averaged 5.3 yards per carry which is the best average of any other back. This year he’s averaging 2.1 yards per carry. For those math experts, that is 3.2 yards per carry less than the last two years.

Tarver isn’t a great playcaller either…yet, but I do believe that this defense is much better than what they showed in the 2nd half on Sunday.
Reggie was handcuffed by some of Al’s (no disrespect here) fiscal irresponsibility because he cares about the long-term future of this organization.
Allen has brought a little more discipline to this team, and that was a Herculean feat.
