Raiders sign defensive back
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, September 19th, 2012 at 9:00 am in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders signed Akwasi Owusu-Ansah to their practice squad, according to his agent via Twitter.
Owusu-Ansah is versatile enough to play cornerback and safety. However, he also has played some wide receiver.
The Dallas Cowboys, who listed Owusu-Ansah as a wide receiver, selected him in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL draft out of Indiana (Pa.) University.
Akwasi Owusu-Ansah returned 28 kicks for 599 yards for Dallas in 2010-11, averaging 21.4 yards per return. He also returned six punts for 47 yards.
He played in 14 games for the Cowboys and Jacksonville Jaguars, including both his starts for the Jaguars last season, all on defense.
No word from the Raiders on whether they signed any of the six players they worked out Tuesday. They have an open spot on their 53-man roster, which also could be filled by signing someone from their practice squad.

Free agent DB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah worked out for the Steelers.Owusu-Ansah was waived by the Cowboys at final cuts after attempting to make the transition from safety to corner during camp. The onetime receiver has made 14 career appearances since being drafted in the 2010 fourth round. Sep 5 – 7:43 PMSource: Adam Caplan on Twitter
So the steelers cut him and then opted for DVD over him and now we have him after cutting DVD.
I think Reg cut him prematurely due to the fact he was an AD “speed” pick. The same reason we haven’t seen Cris Carr brought in for a workout. Out with the old, in with the injured.

To early to tell. I think he can drafdt the talent. Look at Greenbay for proof of that. He is mostl likely going to stock up draft picks and lower these crazy contracts. Regge can only do so much right now. There is not a bunch of type A starting talent just sitting out there looking for a job.

Lack of Playmakers is whats killing the raiders ..on both sides of the ball..I also think many in this blog overglorify our players especially the WRs. When Palmer threw a lob to DHB in the end zone for a 50/50 DHB had no chance of making that play. I respect DHB improved last year but he is not what we need. We struggled in the red zone last year under Hue and we are struggling again. We need a WR who is physical, is quick to the ball, and catches TDs. I have been making the suggestion of bringing in Plax for at least a workout. The criticism I have received has been based on that no other GM has signed Plax so why should we and that Criner and Streater will give us what Plax can do.
I will accept ignoring Plax if you are in a rebuilding mode. Otherwise it makes no sense. There were 60-65 WRs who had more TDS than DHB who last yr in his breakout year..haha..was our #1 receiver. We didnt have a great TE and Dmac was out 9-10 games , yet DHB caught only 4. Dmoore is talented but until he does it he should not be given credit like he has. My biggest criticism of this blog is the overglorification of the players.
Many of you hammered me on that no other GM wanted Plax so why should we. Then its OK to believe in Streater? An UNDRAFTED(no other Gm wanted him) or Criner who has yet to catch a TD pass yet?
Plax is not out of the league bc of talent issues, many gms have been burned by TO, Chad and others and dont want to go down that road bc they already have capable red zone performers. Remember their were 60+ receivers that had more TDs than DHB last year and many of them had to share the spotlight.
If your rebuilding then no need for Plax, but if you want a red zone specialist who caught 8 Tds last yr with Sanchez as your QB than hes worth a workout? We need to stop overglorifying these players and btw Plax 8 tds last year is more than any Raider WR since 2005. Facts not fiction. I hope Criner catches 20td passes this year but until he does lets not go overboard

It’s not the right time to be sober
Now the idiots have taken over
Spreading like a social cancer, is there an answer?
The Raider Nation’s heart is bleeding
Tell me why and how are all the stupid people breeding
Watson, it’s really elementary
The Reggie revolution
Has flipped the b!tch on Al’s old solution
The front office and coaches are being thwarted, ostracized, what a bummer
The Nation keeps getting dumber
Insensitivity is standard and faith is being fancied over reason
Al’s rolling over in his coffin
His “athletes” are screwing up even more often
Hue’s gone and now everything seems to be reversing, and it’s worsening
Someone flopped a steamer in the Raider gene pool
Now angry mob mentality’s no longer the exception, it’s the rule
And I’m starting to feel a lot like Charlton Heston
Stranded on a primate planet
Apes and orangutans that ran it to the ground
With generals and the armies that obeyed them
Followers following fables
Philosophies that enable them to rule without regard
There’s no point for democracy when ignorance is celebrated
Football scientists get the same one vote as some ArmChair inbred
Majority rule, don’t work in mental institutions
Sometimes the smallest softest voice carries the grand biggest solutions
What are we left with?
A Raider Nation of change-fearing Al loyalists
Who feel it’s their duty to blame the coaches once again
Pass on traditions
How to get ahead blindly
And prosper via simpleton culture
The idiots are taking over
The idiots are taking over
The idiots are taking over

Folks, Al Davis left us with a mess. A terrible mess. As much as I love the man and respect him for what he initially did, he really lost over the last decade. Signing burned out, “past their prime” free agents to ridiculously overpaid contracts, giving away draft picks like candy, consistently drafting players that had major red flags simply because he liked their speed/big arm, preventing the defense from ever doing anything because of his horrendously outdated defensive philosophy, and handicapping coaches before they even stepped on the field for the first time.
The man was past his prime, and he just didn’t know when to let go. He wrecked this team, and it’s going to take some time to fix all the mess he left us in. Those of you who would blindly follow him off a cliff, feel free, but I’ll choose to see it for what it is.
I’m angry, beyond angry, at the mess this team is right now, but look at what Reggie stepped into? A bunch of overpaid, underachieving players (especially on defense) and stripped of a ton of draft picks. This job was a mess, mostly thanks to Mr. Davis. He’s got a lot of cleaning up to do. As much as I want to win now, it’s just going to take some time.

I agree, the roster is a hot mess. But the coaching staff has to work with what we have. Cant make orange juice with lemons, cant turn DMAC into Terrell Davis or Palmer into Gannon or DHB into Andre Johnson…

It would be nice if they brought Carter in and put him on Shonasty’s side, and flipped Shonasty to the left side and moved Houston inside. We need to bring back the rotation.
Another thing, is…we have GOT to get more turnovers. We need some freakin Ball Hawks.

“Greetings,
I just signed the following petition addressed to: Reggie McKenzie, Dennis Allen, The Oakland Raiders.
—————-
Fire Greg Knapp
The Raiders deserve better. Greg Knapp has proven he cannot win against defensive coordinators in the NFL. His route concepts don’t work, he doesn’t put our players in the best position to win, & his playbook does not emphasize the run or the vertical game.”

I’d be shocked. I like his potential but I’d bet they could get him onto the practice squad without much difficulty.
Tough decisions have to be made because of injuries right now and the Raiders need all the DBs they can possibly lay hands on & hope someone steps up. Nix is a prime candidate to get cut.

Wow. Was that San Diego game like LAST YEAR? Dude killed it. For the four hundredth time, he’s a 3-4 LB, he needs to be closer to the line of scrimmage to make plays and is too big to run in space. – he excels with a big NT in front.

So the steelers cut him and then opted for DVD over him and now we have him after cutting DVD.
I think Reg cut him prematurely due to the fact he was an AD “speed” pick. The same reason we haven’t seen Cris Carr brought in for a workout. Out with the old, in with the injured.

Unless we go 0-16 this year Mark is going to stick with this clown for 3 or 4 years. 48,
Riff. Good to know, than who was to blame in your opinion for those big runs given up? McClain, Huff?
——————
It wasnt just the big runs.
During the opening drive, all of our LBs were missing their gaps and lost. While Seymore and Kelly were occupying multiple lineman.
They pulled Burris and it got instantly fixed. The rookie was having a tough time early on. Understandable.
Then, as the game progressed, the LB play got better. Wheeler learns and improves VERY fast. But every time you saw Reggie rip off a gain of more than 3 yards, it was cause someone missed their gap.
As for the big runs, it wasnt fatigue. Too early in the game. It was just ridiculously bad secondary play. Branch didnt even take an angle on Reggie on the second TD. He ran straight into the back of McClain.
If it wasnt one guy messing up, it was another.
And our DE play was atrocious. ShoNasty has had a very poor year so far.

Wheelers drop of tannehill’s first pass has flew under the radar IMO. That takes 7 pts off the board as Miami ended up getting a TD on that drive, kills a tannehill’s confidence as he threw 3 ints in the first week, and we are actually in miami territory

I don’t think we are void of talent. The thing is we do have potentially explosive players in key offensive positions with DMAC and DMOORE…heck even DHB is not void of talent as has the POTENTIAL to be really good.
I will add Palmer as well. I’m not gonna count him out like everyone else when he is being hampered in this new system. Give him time to throw and receivers running correct routes…who will CATCH the dam ball…and I think he is fine. He has been far from perfect though in these first two games.
Burris I think is someone who could be really good and Wheeler is starter material for most teams that aren’t already loaded at LB.

Man, who would’ve thought this was what the future held after our trip to the Super Bowl in ‘02…
September 19th, 2012 at 10:00 am
From Reggie’s Wikipedia entry:
“McKenzie was employed by the Green Bay Packers from 1994 to 2012. He began as a scout, and gradually rose through the ranks to become the Packers’ director of player personnel and eventually the team’s director of football operations, while reporting to general managers Ron Wolf and Ted Thompson.”
So he’s an actualy NFL player who rose through the ranks from scout to second in command of the personnel department of a Super Bowl champion.
But yep, I’m sure he did nothing but sit at his desk and stare off into space. He had no influence on any decisions! And he talks slow, so he must know nothing about football!
Some of you guys are fcking jokes, honestly.

what kind of CBs allow a big slow WR to run virtually the same route 10 times for 10 catches and NEVER ONCE try to jump the route. It was priceless seeing the D coach on the sideline screaming at one of those clowns as Hartline ran the same route in front of our bench.
Reggie has a hand in who he brings in, and the CBs chosen havent panned out. But whats crazy to me is what were the CBs thinking . As an athlete your taught to recognize and adjust on the field. Could they not figure out what hartline was going to do?

Not trying to diminish what Reggies role was, but it would be interesting to know how much influence he really had on creating GB’s roster.
======================
Its obvious. As director of player personnel and eventually the team’s director of football operations, while reporting to general managers Ron Wolf and Ted Thompson – he came up as a scout. He SCOUTS, then the GM’s sign off on the draft.
He had least had input on 50% of who they picked, along with Eliot Wolf.
The issue is; His selection criteria of head coaching, his evaluation of the roster, then formulating how the scheme would match with the existing personnel – which ALLEN picked. McKenzie had to get that ridiculous salary stuff taken care of. Hell, they didnt even have proper evaluation development with the existing offices according to some insiders.
He had no draft picks to work with, and bloated untradable contracts. A lot of people that McKenzie had looked at were in good situations – Mike McCoy, Pete Charmichael, etc. – I will say why did he passed on experienced people who have re-built teams, but what? Only Jeff Fisher was out there. A lot of people wouldnt let their assistants interview for coordinator positions when Hue was coaching.

So he’s an actualy NFL player who rose through the ranks from scout to second in command of the personnel department of a Super Bowl champion.
But yep, I’m sure he did nothing but sit at his desk and stare off into space. He had no influence on any decisions! And he talks slow, so he must know nothing about football!

we’ll just leave out the part about Roethlisberger getting 2 rings and Kerry Collins now out of the league, and New England having the greatest QB of this generation (arguably)
or the multiple playoff appearances of San Diego, Seattle, Baltimore and New England – of whom the players I named went to.
But, hindsight is 20/20. Factor in the coaching turnover and the propensity for retreading rather than draft acumen….which was OBVIOUSLY out of wack. – San Diego picked higher – stacked talent, became competitive – Baltimore built their corps group – with 2 Hall of Fame talents.
its the players NOW OUT OF FOOTBALL, most notably, J.Russell and R.Gallery.
Pats were in Super Bowl, while Navaro Bowman was not.

The answer DEFENSE. Get players that fit the scheme, trade down, acquire as much as you can, then go after teams – learn from S.F. – thats how they turned it around. The Baltimore way. – of course it helps to have Ray Lewis or Patrick Willis.

I think guys like DMAC , Dmoore are potential playmakers. On the defensive side we have none. Except … has cleaning house at CB worked? Both replacements are down for extended time two games into the season. Now we’re trying out guys off the street who could be starting in less than two weeks. Maybe less than one.
I get that everyone’s frustrated by this team. Obviously. But it doesn’t mean that every single guy on the roster can be replaced somehow with someone better. In reality, you dump Satele and end up with Brisiel. You dump Routt and CJ and you end up with two average vets who sustained major injuries less than six quarters into the season. You dump Louis Murphy and you bring in Derek Hagan (I actually like both guys, but it’s not like Hagan is a difference maker). You dump Kam Wimbley and you end up with Dave Tollefson.
Teams generally don’t let go of their great players. So a one-year rebuild is just not very likely.
We had a window of opportunity with Hue and these players after about a decade of losing. Circumstances conspired against us. Al passed away. And now we’re blowing it up to start again.

Sometimes, you have to take 3 steps backwards to make it to the next level. Reggie realized we were a year or 2 aways from challenging for the playoffs. Thats why he signed some guys at a bargain, but that didnt cost us too much money.
Hue made a big gamble on Palmer and it did not payoff, that is whay he is not here. The only way hue was staying was if we won The West.

I agree, the roster is a hot mess. But the coaching staff has to work with what we have. Cant make orange juice with lemons, cant turn DMAC into Terrell Davis or Palmer into Gannon or DHB into Andre Johnson…
________________________________
Are you kidding me? Terrell Davis was way overrated. Napoleon Kaufman was better than him. Any running back in that system did well. Like Arian Foster is doing now. They are above average backs but nothing special. It’s the line that’s responsible for them looking so good. And if you give our team a chance our line should look like that eventually.
September 19th, 2012 at 10:24 am
I think he did the best he could to fill in holes with the money he has to wrok with. Also, I think the lack of depth at each position is really hurting us as well a nd that was not Reggies creation.
We have a number of guys on this team locking up big dolars they are not living up too.

All,
Encourage u to listen to this Rod Woodson, Bill Romanowski & Greg Papa on 95.7 FM yesterday. http://957thegame.com/topic/play_window.php?audioType=Episode&audioId=6037541 They talk about the zone blocking and how bad the Raiders have looked. They especially talk about how ZBS isn’t a fit for our OL and DMAC. Not good news for the team. They all think we start 0-5 before our first win. It’s just sad that a team that was 8-8 last year is now in the race for a top 5 pick.

BigMac, Amy and Mark will start listening when fans begin booing and begin holding them accountable, instead of taking it with a bunch of cliches and BS.

The answer DEFENSE. Get players that fit the scheme, trade down, acquire as much as you can, then go after teams – learn from S.F. – thats how they turned it around. The Baltimore way. – of course it helps to have Ray Lewis or Patrick Willis.
doubtful that McClain becomes that…unless Ray Lewis comes in as a coach next year.
——————————
Not a bad premise, but please understand that Slowlando will never, ever become a Ray Lewis/Patrick Willis type player. Doesn’t have the feet, the heart or the toughness to play like those guys.
That was one of those Al picks that the pundits were all giving him a handy over but I was railing against it on this board for weeks before the draft. The same things we see with him on the Raiders — disappearing for games, no impact plays, jogging after plays — were things I saw him do at Alabama. Never really understood the hype, other than that Bama’s defense was good and he was supposedly the leader of it.
The funny thing is that the Giants, who were desperate for LB help, almost surely would’ve taken him if he were there, but we took him so they had to settle for gambling on Jason Pierre Paul.

“Knapp is a great quarterback coach, not a great offensive coordinator. In all of his previous stints as coordinator, the teams he coached regressed in rushing, scoring and wins. This all culminated in his previous coordinator job with the Raiders from 2007 to 2008; years in which the Raiders saw some of the worst offensive football in the history of the franchise.”

I understand what Reggie was saddled with..I really do, but there was no reason to panic into applying this ZBS/WCO offense right away. What was the rush? Seriously.
Is there a new NFL rule that requires we adopt it no matter what our personnel is presently like?
Doesn’t it make more sense to actually WAIT till u have the personnel to operate it than force it on a team that is not fit for it?
Hey, WE are told to be understanding and patient why weren’t they in implementing this?
Keep your top 10 offense intact and make scheme changes on defense and ride out another yr. of being competitive while you gradually acquire the personnel to implement the “new” offense.
Believe it or not, there are some teams who actually do’nt use the wco/zbs..and they aren’t all losers either.
What was the rush to virtually assure us of yet another miserable year? When things apparently can’t even start to get fixed until next yr?

Sooooo….basically you are making EXCUSES for our wins?
Your reasoning is that we only won a significant game last year because 1)a player STEPPED UP AND MADE A PLAY, and 2)We had a weak division.
Mind you, the Broncos, from our own division, beat Pittsburgh and were one game from the AFC Championship.
In the NFL you appreciate wins, no matter if it’s by 1 point or 30 points, and build on them. You don’t make excuses for them!

Here’s your Sterling Moore update (Source: http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/new-england-patriots/post/_/id/4730013/defensive-snaps-moore-over-dowling).
Played 30 of 64 snaps vs. Cardinals.
ANALYSIS: A change in the Patriots’ sub packages stood out, with CB Ras-I Dowling replaced by CB Sterling Moore in the nickel. One line of thinking was the that Dowling (6-1, 210) would be a good matchup against the size of Larry Fitzgerald (6-3, 218), but the Patriots had more confidence in Moore (5-10, 200) joining top cornerbacks Kyle Arrington (5-10, 195) and Devin McCourty (5-10, 195) in the sub.

Ahhh, but we are the Raiders fans…we can handle it and be good little boys and just accept that “it takes time”.
I refuse to accept that an 8-8 team for consecutive seasons…that is still young and for the most part intact…in fact has more weapons with a healthy DMAC now back…would be such a pathetic “team” right now.
