Raiders-Steelers game will be televised locally
By Steve Corkran
Thursday, September 20th, 2012 at 12:50 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders game against the Pittsburgh Steelers is all but sold out and will be televised locally, the team announced Thursday afternoon.
This marks the 10th straight regular-season home game that sold out in advance of the league-mandated deadline, 72 hours before kick-off. The Raiders sold out all eight of their regular-season home game last season.
A Raiders spokesman said only that “we expect a very full house” Sunday. However, numerous fans have contacted me about the inability to find tickets anywhere on-line or through ticket brokers.
That streak will be put to the test next month, when the Raiders next play at home Oct. 21 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Raiders and Jaguars are two of six teams without a victory through the first two games this season, and the Raiders face challenging games against the Steelers, Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons between now and the Jaguars game.

Maybe it would not have worked. Maybe the chemistry between the temperate boss and the ebullient subordinate would have been all wrong.
But Hue Jackson did enough in 2011 to warrant another year as head coach of the Raiders, a chance to work with new general manager Reggie McKenzie.
I don’t necessarily believe McKenzie and Jackson would have clashed and brought down the franchise — especially when Hue realized he essentially was an interim coach, on a one-year trial.
McKenzie, however, wanted his “own guy.” That’s a common approach for a new executive, whether in sports or politics or the restaurant business. Sometimes the cure and sometimes the disease, “ownguyism” can be found in most any office or factory.
Dennis Allen is McKenzie’s own guy and, thus, Reggie’s great experiment. Allen is a good coach, with the potential to become an excellent head coach. He may find the solutions to overcome Oakland’s atrocious start.
It’s also reasonable to believe this start might have been avoided if Jackson were engineering the offense.
Hindsight? Not really. I thought in January that McKenzie moved too quickly to replace the head coach, and nothing that has happened in September has changed my opinion.
The strength of the 2011 Raiders was an offense that was productive despite being improvisational at quarterback and the loss of star running back Darren McFadden. It was the offense that allowed the Raiders to
Advertisement
come within a win of the making the postseason.
Defense was this team’s weakness, and it’s an issue Jackson and McKenzie could have addressed and likely solved by making comprehensive changes within the coaching staff assembled by former owner/GM Al Davis.
To be clear, Jackson was not a great head coach. He was by turns superb and mystifying. His bravado was on his sleeve and his ego sometimes lifted him above the clouds. He was a former college quarterback who took risks, tempted fate and embraced the spotlight.
Hue and his abundance of effervescence would have required considerable maintenance.
Yet Reggie could have managed. Trial basis gives an executive tremendous leverage.
But McKenzie wanted a clean slate and his own guy. So he replaced Jackson with Allen, who had done a nice job in his one year as defensive coordinator in Denver.
This was a drastic change. No doubt the Raiders were in need of dramatic change. Al Davis was the boss for nearly 50 years, and his death required several positions to be filled. Anyone who filled them would have brought radical change.
Given authority by Mark Davis, McKenzie practically blew up the place, starting over, almost from the bottom up. Nearly everything he is doing needed to be done for the outdated Raiders to join the updated NFL.
But it’s quite possible such sweeping change — Allen came aboard 20 days after McKenzie took over as GM and three months after Mark Davis assumed ownership — is a case of too much, too fast.
Allen, despite positive reviews during training camp, is under fire for Oakland’s regression during its 0-2 start; the Raiders suddenly are regarded as one of the NFL’s five worst teams. Moreover, Allen is taking extreme criticism for his choice of Greg Knapp as offensive coordinator.
That’s what happens when a talent like McFadden disappears in plain sight, when an offense with the tools to improve opens the season with 12 punts and one meaningful touchdown.
It’s what happens when an offensive scheme that was working is scrapped for one that is struggling.
It’s not that an entirely new football structure can’t work. After installing two first-timers — GM Thomas Dimitroff and head coach Mike Smith — in 2008, Atlanta has had four successive winning seasons.
The Falcons, however, were 4-12 the previous season and entered 2008 holding six of the first 98 picks in the draft, including two in the first round.
The Raiders had posted consecutive 8-8 seasons, entered the last two Decembers in the playoff race and came into 2012 with conceivably the worst draft positioning in franchise history.
The 2011 team in many ways outperformed its talent, its circumstances (on and off the field) and its front-office operation.
The ‘12 Raiders are not among the deepest or most talented teams in the league. The roster is a tangle of the good, the average and the imminently replaceable.
To get the Raiders where they want to be, DA needs Reggie’s help. That will take time. Given the scope of the makeover, any progress that comes likely will be incremental. This could take years.
Meanwhile, the Raiders have taken several steps backward. It’s particularly hard to watch, after they found a way last season to take a few steps forward.

I still think it was Huge who got hisself fired.
And that kind of pisses me off cuz I, like some of you all, think that we could’a transitioned a little smoother without the 100% top to bottom overhaul.
But were I in Mark Davis’ and ReggieMack’s shoes I probably would have brought in someone else. Huge make some big mistakes there and endeared himself to NO ONE, except Eastbayraider and ChrisinNY.
Wasn’t too enthused with the wholesale switch to ZBS and am still not sold on Gregg Knapp either. But I am willing to have some patience and let things unfold.
I lived through the last 30 years of the Raiders sucking (except for 99-01 THANKS CHUCKY!) and I’ve (hopefully) live through another year two until the new regime gets things straightened out…
September 20th, 2012 at 1:33 pm
Do you ever watch the Raiders and Titans and wonder why the play-callers can’t get Darren McFadden or Chris Johnson the ball in space more often? In fantasy football, as in the NFL, coaching can have a dramatic impact on a player’s production.
There are strong arguments to be made that neither McFadden nor Johnson, both reading and hesitating at the line of scrimmage, is a particularly good fit for a zone-blocking scheme. In 25 games with Tom Cable’s zone-blocking system from 2007-09, McFadden rushed for 856 yards on 217 carries (3.9 YPC) and just one game over 90 yards.
Enter Hue Jackson, a more creative schemer who installed McFadden’s favorite running plays in a power-blocking scheme. In 20 games under Jackson, McFadden exploded for 1,771 rushing yards at 5.1 per clip with 11 games over 90 yards.
I can’t put the disappointing Week 2 performances on the running backs. McFadden simply had no holes to exploit against a dominant Dolphins run defense that hasn’t allowed a 100-yard rushing performance in 16 games. Want a sign that problem lies in blocking, not McFadden? He’s getting first contact on average 0.7 yards downfield compared to 3.6 yards a season ago.

Said DMAC is to fast for the ZBS and said just give him the ball to the outside because he is fast enough to run around the whole defense. He is right. Look at what he did the jets last season.
However ZBS is not going anywhere cuz Allen is not gonna admit he made a mistake changing the offense

If Raiders were 2-0, the article would have been praising Reg for his decision to can Hue.
That said, I agree with above, Hue got himself fired with his stupid comments about how he has earned the right to not only stay on as HC, but to pick his own team.

Yup our Oline got owned. It’s not about McFadden. He has been hit within the first .7 yd avg per rush vs 3.1 last year. It’s the frickin OLine getting owned out there. I saw the new guy #65 Briesel let a safety #20 come right past him to stop what would have been a great gain on a out pattern to Ausberry. McFadden is fine. The ZBS system is fine. It’s the frickin individual Olineman getting OWNED by the other team. Wake up boys. Seattle and Miami boht used ZBS to kick the crap out of their opponents last weekend.

A few things, 1 the ahole who wrote that article also advocated for Hue’s firing, the media writes anything to get the mindless to read it. 2 What is the purpose of this anyways? Do you ACTUALLY believe that Reggie is going to fire DA and his whole staff and rehire Hue? Do you ACTUALLY believe that Mark Davis is going to fire Reggie in week 2? In either case you sound like a spoiled child throwing a temper tantrum.
The bed is made, no matter how much the whinier fans complain it is done. I think the only real mistake was not resigning Bob Wylie to a new contract, but DA had no connection to Wylie, and Reggie wasn’t going to force any coaches on DA… that was the Al Davis way. That way died on 10/8/11
I think to many people are unwilling or unable to accept that fact. The Raiders will NEVER be the way they were prior to 10/8/11. That team died. Never coming back. No one says you have to like moving forward, but you have to accept it, or you have to move on.

The number 1 rushing play in the ZBS is the outside stretch play. Toss, sweep, stretch, pitch, inside, outside… none of it matters. If the Oline doesn’t get it blocked, the back doesn’t go anywhere. This is a fact. Why can’t you guys just understand that all that matters is execution? IF the lineman properly executed the blocks McFadden would be fine (especially if he chose the correct hole to run in when they had it blocked)

R8,
Sure I’m drinking koolaid but then again I have my reasons.
1. the current regime will not tolerate quitters like Al did so this aint going to be Joe Bugel, Kiffin, and Art Shell lame ducks all over again.
2. Our current roster is much better than the roster of those years.
3. I did anticipate a learning curve and expect this team to perform a better second half.
So yeah fire away if you like. I know I saw a better D out there than the final stats last Sunday. Yeah Bush got 179 yds but 24 of his 26 rushes totaled 90 yds and he broke on only 2 runs late in the game. The long one was by Branch not keeping his outside containment. Our D got wore down by the heat in Miami.
September 20th, 2012 at 1:56 pm
Hue Jackson inherited an 8-8 team and improved that team to…..8-8 (rumblin, bumblin, stumblin down the stretch and missin the playoffs).
Why do people think he was a good coach?
I think his “explosive” offense scored about 12 points all year in the 4th quarter.

I remember going a few games that we never scored in the 4th! Granted we had the lead in those but…What happened, despite the d “losing” us games that possibly could have had us in teh Playoffs last year…it goes both ways…if we scored, then no problem right?

BS!!! more excuses for Hue. Tom Cable had it worst and he still finished 8-8. Tom Cable had Al Davis holding his paycheck and trying to fire him. Still finished as a non-loser. Hue took over a team and couldnt improve them. finished 1-4 down the stretch and then blamed eveyrone else for the debacle. WTF wants that as their HC.

Bob Wylie was on sirius radio last night and said DMAC favorite runs are to the outside.. and pitches.. and sweeps.
************************
The number 1 rushing play in the ZBS is the outside stretch play. Toss, sweep, stretch, pitch, inside, outside… none of it matters. If the Oline doesn’t get it blocked, the back doesn’t go anywhere. This is a fact. Why can’t you guys just understand that all that matters is execution? IF the lineman properly executed the blocks McFadden would be fine (especially if he chose the correct hole to run in when they had it blocked)
=================================================
100% correct. And for all you idiots, wasn’t the best season McFadden has had in his career the 2010 season? Using Cables zone power hybrid scheme?

Exactly. Josh Dubow stats said that DMAC is getting touched at .7 yd after getting the ball. He was getting touched at 3.1 last yr. Sorry but not even Bo Jackson or Barry Sanders will go anywhere getting contact at .7 yd per rush.
It’s about our individual lineman winning their battles. They are not right now.

Hey Dummy, you’re back!
Veldheer and Barnes excelled in the power scheme.
That’s why regardless of their draft status, the plan was changed in 2011 to incorporate more POWER mixed with Zone. That’s exactly what Al Davis said, that’s exactly what happened, and the result was a top 5 offensive line.
I know it will take you all day to comprehend that, but if you start now, you might get it by midnight.

There’s a reason 32 teams didn’t have Knapp calling their offensive plays for the last two years.
September 20th, 2012 at 2:33 pm
Q: What kind of offense did you run at Hillsdale?
Veldheer: Yeah, we ran a lot of pretty much any multi-formational single-back offense. We didn’t do a whole lot of two-back stuff. But we would go spread, double-tight, out of a one-back formation, a lot of inside-zone.
Q: Are you comfortable in a zone blocking scheme?
Veldheer: Yeah, I’m very comfortable with outside zone, inside zone. We used to do a lot of counter stuff. Not so much this year, but the way we block our counter is pretty much how teams block power. So, I’m pretty familiar, pretty comfortable with how those run-blocking schemes work.

I have been saying that for six years here. My breakdown of the loss said exactly that. Before you got here, look at post #75. That’s what he says. One of the lst plays of the last game, the ball is tipped, and Wheeler can not come down with it. Another goes right thru Huff’s hands. McFadden drops the ball not once, not twice, but three times, once on the goal line. He dropped more than he caught. Goodson made a play. LEAVE HIM OUT THERE!
On the other side, they made plays. They got the W. We got the L. But some of you still will want to blame Al and his little walker with the tennis balls on the legs for not tackling Fasano on the 8 yards line, or blowing four tackles and watching Reggie Bush skate. It boggles the mind really.

But since Seymour Bush can’t count, he/she probably thinks that the larger numbers in the power rankings actually mean that the team is better.

Question, if the offense flops again when pitt comes to town, do they get a pass?
The steelers rarely give up 100 yards on the ground, so with the dmac struggling it stands o reason that he ill be bottled up. The offensive line is doing fine but dmac is not reading the run lanes properly, just as he struggled with that aspect last time he was in this scheme. If he continues to tank, does he get a pass in favor of blaming the o-line and scheme?
What about palmer? If he post another pedestrian 50% completion percentage or another miserable interception, will it be attributed to the o-line not being able to stand up to the mighty steeler defense? Or will it be because dmac cant get going and we dont have a run game, or so and so is unhealthy, or global warming?
What about D.A? doesnt he desrve part of the blame for hiring knapp and failing to create competition for dmac and palmer?
If we get blown out what will people here say about it? Im very curious to see how this turn out.

Yeah, Knapp said some things that REALLY makes me wonder if Reggie and DA knew they were blowing this year so they brought a fool in to be able to fire and point the blame.
He blamed that he had 2 diff centers in 2 games.
He said the scheme will take time, we need patience.
He said “houston” prob after every comment that it worked there.
I just lost it after the pre-season comment.

I can see that DHB haters, are being silenced. as much as people want to elevate other wrs on this team above him he just like last season is our most productive and consistent play maker, and as of this moment our most dangerous weapon.
The zone scheme has become he scape goat. The scheme is an umbrella to protect those that are heavily invested in current players performing well. in other words when players like palmer or dmac fail to lead us to wins it is the schemes fault. last i checked the zone scheme is working fine for many teams in the nfl today, that includes teams with far less at the running back spot than our own. There may be more to it than just the scheme, and the players must take the bulk of the blame.
Knapp is the whipping boy that is ruining carson palmer and dmac, according to what you read here. palmer struggled mightily in hu jacks explosive vertical offense, leading me to believe that he would never be a good fit to run it. he has played far better football so far this season (although lucky not to have more picks), but the teams seams to be flat. Palmer has not led a single come from behind win in oakland, has not performed in the clutch, and been abysmal on 3rd down this year. He may be playing better but it isnt nearly good enough to lead to wins. his leadership has also been questionable, as he refuses to acknowledge his own struggles, and rips into team mates and coaches on the side lines in true jay cutler-esqu fashion. palmer at his best this year wasnt enough, knapps lack of creativity compounds the problem. Qb doesnt make plays, and the coach doesnt put him in postion to kake plays, we are oneof the worst offenses in the nfl today.

Cut to the next day and a bunch of high school seniors are going on a cruise to New York City with their biology teacher. We then see Jason pop-up from under the water and hitch a ride on the ship.
What made him do this instead of going around the Crystal Lake camp to stalk the people there? I guess we’ll never know. The only guy that seems to know is this deck swabbing creep who politely informs one of the kids, “This voyage is doomed. DOOMED!”

That’s becuz WINNING is secondary to him. The most important thing is to institute this new “system”.
If they win..that’s nice, if they lose? Well, at least we are establishing this new system.
Thier opinion of the Raiders and the fans is so low they feel like they are all doing us a favor by saving us after Al’s death.
Their opinion of the Raiders is almost as low as the opinion that about 50 % of the posters here have of the Raiders.
There is NO URGENCY to win now…it’s all about a future that is uncertain, and hey..in 2-3 yrs. we may start to have some success…”be patient”.
If this were the Steelers and they had this approach with THEIR fans..how do think it would go over?
Nah…we’re just the Raiders. We’re use to getting schytt on and asking for seconds…we should be lucky anyone even took the job.

I THINK THE RUN GAME MIGHT BE BETTER SUNDAY BUT I am calling right now that Denarius Moore is the most important player.

Lets see who exploits the other.

this is somewhat true, i singled out plamer and dmac because they have been touted as unstoppable together going back to last year. Not okmnly has it not happened but it has been a complete disaster. besides the offense isnt built around myers or cooper Carlisle, it was built on palmer and dmac.

Carson has had 2 weeks to practice with his complete set of WR’s and Dmac.
We seem to play good against Pitt.
Raiders-20
steelers- 17
Dmac gets close to 100 yds and 60 yds in receiving.
We have to come after Ben. If we can’t hold their running attack, we are done.
I still believe we have a chance to come out of the Donkey game 2-2 the following week.

Finally some logic and perspective. The Donks came out of the Detroit game last year 1-4 and went on their run. Let’s see how DA, Knapp, and Tarver make adjustments……
September 20th, 2012 at 3:41 pm
I felt the same way about the Knapp hiring as I did last year about the Bresnahan hiring, that empty gut are you serious feeling. I don’t like anything about his offense. Yes the players need to execute better and be accountable. Yes there is not a whole lot of depth on the team. I still think his schemes and playcalling suck. Reggie and DA are going to try to bring stability to the org, so I don’t believe they will blow him out of here anytime soon.
September 20th, 2012 at 3:59 pm
Raider8ray great stat about McFadden contact .7 yards downfield, that is blocking and scheme. Research would have shown that these Raiders aren’t ZBS guys, that goes counter culture, it is plain not Raider like for 300 lb guys to dive at legs and knees. I think the whole scheme is based on backside defenders being scared to suffer career ending knee injuries so they give up huge lanes if the run side defenders aggressively pursue the ball carrier. Teams are disciplined enough for run side defenders to get to their points while backside guys wait for the dive block and close off the running lanes. McFadden does not cut like that and may suffer his own knee injury trying to cut back and not seeing the pursuing defender
