Raiders piecing together secondary

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, September 21st, 2012 at 12:22 pm in Oakland Raiders.

With no sign of Shawntae Spencer as practice got underway Friday, the Raiders went behind closed doors to prepare for life without both of their starting cornerbacks.

Spencer, still in a boot and on crutches Thursday, will likely be declared out today, joining Ron Bartell on the sidelines. Bartell is out with a broken shoulder blade suffered in the season opener.

Dennis Allen and defensive coordinator Jason Tarver will attempt to piece together a secondary to deal with a Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense which puts great strain on even experienced defensive backfields.

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger does some of his best work against confused secondaries, breaking containment and throwing on the move.

“Our deal is, we’ve got NFL football players and we got to go out and play at a certain level and we hold all our guys accountable at the same level,’’ Allen said.

Exactly how the Raiders will line up is a secret. All Allen will say is that free safety Michael Huff has been working in different spots in the defensive backfield and that it’s a “next man up’’ philosophy.

Huff has played slot corner in the nickel defense before. He was told by the previous staff there was thought given to moving him to cornerback full time. Given the availability of Matt Giordano to fill in at free safety, having Huff on the move makes sense.

While Allen said there was no thought given by the current staff upon arrival for a position change, he said Huff has “speed and athleticism. That’s the biggest thing. You’ve got to be able to run and play out there on the edge and he can certainly do that.’’

Huff, normally a willing and available interview, has made himself scarce during media availability periods this week.

The Raiders’ biggest challenge will be on the two outside corners, given the way Pat Lee and Joselio Hanson struggled last week against Miami and Brian Hartline. Hanson arrived with the reputation of doing his best work as a slot corner.

Phillip Adams and Coye Francies are also cornerbacks on the roster but had only special teams responsibilities against Miami.

Considering the speed and skill of Pittsburgh receivers Antonio Brown and Mike Wallace, Roethlisberger the outside targets, whether it Lee and Hanson or Lee and Huff _ will be inviting.

Tarver was getting his first new look Thursday at cornerback Brandian Ross, claimed off the Packers practice squad, and it seems unlikely he’d have an immediate role.

“I like his movement,’’ Tarver said. “I don’t know much more than that. Reggie and Dennis know a lot more about him than I do. I’m looking forward to working with him.’’

Roethlisberger, in a conference call with Bay Area media, has noticed the difference in defensive philosophy.

“From what I’ve seen, it looks like they have started to throw some more zone coverages, where before it was like they just did a lot of lining up man-to-man and challenged you from that perspective,’’ Roethlisberger said.

– Middle linebacker Rolando McClain was on the field and going through drills with the first team, but cannot play until he has passed all cognitives tests. The Raiders didn’t learn of Jon Condo’s availability last week until Saturday.

Francies, who also had a concussion, was also on the field.

– Tackle Khalif Barnes (groin) was not at practice and will likely be declared “out’’ this afternoon, with Willie Smith filling in as the starter.

– Running back Mike Goodson, who has practiced all week and not been on the injury report, was a spectator on Friday.

- -Fans entering the stadium an hour before kickoff Sunday will be eligible to win prizes such as field passes, locker room tours, autographed memorabilia and Raider merchandise. Check Raiders.com for more details.

I’d take Cam as our QB right now!
    ======================================
    So would I.

But he’s still got some growing up to do and needs an attitude check.

I think he’s a team player and a winner, that’s why the SuperKam posing while getting spanked is disappointing.

    I’ll tell you another thing…

If Kam was my QB, I’d emphasize the importance of him refining his game as far as being a ‘pocket’ QB, reading defenses, etc…

But on a night when you’re facing a fierce pass rush, the passing game is languishing and the run game is struggling…

I’m telling Kam – you’ve got a green light to run whenever you want to, and would let him take the team on his shoulders and carry it.

I’d utilize every facet of his ability and wouldn’t worry about pre-conceived notions that there’s an urgency to mold him into the protypical pocket passer.

It’s entirely possible that the Raiders will be 0-5 before they play at home again, and entirely possible that the Jaguars will be 0-5 heading into that game, too. That’s not a recipe for sellout. Or a game the fans would even want to watch on TV.

SMH…if we’re 0-5 heading into that game I refuse to attend a game this year!

Sorry to say it but if we are 0-5 our season is over and we need to start counting our eggs (draft picks) for Aprils Draft!

Not holding out much hope for this week. Pittsburgh is better than us and we suck at home. Our best shot coming up is at Denver the next week. Can’t remember the last time we lost there. If we lose that one, there’s no question in my mind the season is lost.

  13. MiamiRaider78 Says:

If DMAC continues to struggle running behind the ZBS and the losses mount, do any of you think trading him for future draft picks, is out of the question?

DMAC is a great runningback…when he’s not on the sideline, nursing injuries. His contract is up after next year and who knows if he’d want to resign here? Plus there have been runningbacks drafted in the later rounds who have excelled in this offense.

    Just a thought.

Candidates mid-season, OK I guess. Who? Randy Hanson

You have to wait until the offseason to assemble a staff, this isn’t Reno’s 24/7 pick-and-pull a staff.
    ====================================================
Yes, you’d probably have to wait until the offseason to bring in an entirely new OC and staff.

But in the meantime, you could hand the job to Saunders and see what happens.

My point was that candidates won’t be dissuaded from taking the OC job due to Krappy getting fired quickly (not quick enough for me) in 2012.

You can’t worry that swiftly giving Gregry (no ‘o’) the boot is going to present a problem in attracting an OC in the future.

Kiffin, the former Raiders coach, threw his USC quarterback, Matt Barkley, under the bus earlier this week for mistakes Barkley made in a 21-14 loss to Stanford last week. On Wednesday, less than a week after barring a reporter from practice for reporting on an injury, Kiffin walked away from a post-practice news conference 28 seconds in, after a question related to a player injury.

You have to feel for the guy and he should be able to sue him. He’s gone through so many coaching changes, different philosiphies, blocking schemes, injuries etc.

If we can get something in return for him, why not? We need the help, especially if the Raiders are going to draft players who only fit a certain offense.

Picks, as in plural? LOL No chance.

Darren’s draft value BEFORE THE SEASON, was probably around a 3rd rounder, now maybe a 4th or so.

The last top-tier RB I could find traded in the NFL was Marshall Faulk, and he was fresh off one of the greatest season any RB has ever had, and got a 2nd round pick for his trade value.

Oft-injured RB’s, on one year deals of a top 4 draft pick, have about as much trade value as Gregg Knapp.

Look for Tarver to continually send the house at Ben. It’s the only way they will be able to stop them from marching up and down the field.

  32. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

The 7th overall pick, Mike Puff has had 6 sacks and 9 picks entering his 7th season as a Raider.

    He’s also scored ZERO TD’s.

Hard to believe he’s never had a pick 6 or taken a fumble recovery to the house.

Guess that was due to not playing in a ‘real’ defense.

Can’t remember Puff ever laying a hit on a WR either.

Soft as Charmin, and the epitome of ‘non-impact’.

  33. Al_is_theraiders Says:

this team is quitting on reggie and da already….hmm zone coverage = losses, passing at will on the defense….where have i read that before? Tarver knows nothing about the cb pickup….nice to know reggie consults his coaches…

And before I get a blog drive by…DMAC is my favorite running back, got his jersey, I sketch pictures of him (I like to draw) lol but if he’s not going to produce in Zzzzz’s offense…

    Trade him.

  35. Bobby Bushay Says:

I was wrong earlier this summer on “Ask Steve” Q&A we all tune in for each week, saying our secondary would be fine. I admit it – however, I meant a healthy secondary… an “intact” secondary with both draft picks from a year ago – VanDyke and Chekwa. Didn’t see all of the other changes plus injury. If you look at the roster, virtually any position on the team is in trouble if you have to drill down for depth because of injury. It may be a long season – BUT – hopefully Reggie and Dennis will find a few ballers through this painful season as we shuttle people in and out. We got depth squat! That’s a silver lining in a potentially “bleak” season.

  36. Just Fire Baby Says:

IF you want to get some trade value for Darren, we will need to sign him to a cap-friendly contract extension first.

Maybe not from your post, but there have been thousands (literally) of “The Sky is Falling” posts on this board in the last week.

Well, true that. I’m a long time reader, seen those myself. Been a member of Raidernation my entire life and I’m not about to jump ship now. Nevertheless, I do believe some of those singing “The Sky is Falling” tune do have a point. There was already a functional hybrid zbs/power running OL scheme in place when Greg got here. Why mess with that when you’ve become the OC of a team well known for their lack of continuity? Isn’t Greg doing the very thing we all complained about when AD (RIP AL) was still with us ?

Concrete jungle. Never heard of an aphid. Rarely saw a plant, unless it was in a pot.

Sports weren’t played on grass fields too frequently.

Allen is telling the media certainly there is a sense of urgency. So which is guys? FCK!! Say what u want about hue .. he gave u something to cheer for and being on ur seat about. Its gonna take a while for some fans to get over hue.. because Allen / knapp has shown zero so far. ZERO. Did I mention HUE didnt even have an offseason last year?

Raids clinging to a lead, time running short, need a first down to run out the clock or can play it close to the vest and just run and punt – you KNEW what crazy ass Hue was going to do…

Ball was getting aired out. Not a doubt about it.

Fake punts ? Saw more in one year of Hue than we did the previous 20.

Fake FG’s. Tons of reverses his first year as OC.

Hue took aggression to an unheard of level.

Not a Greg Knapp bone in that crazy mofo’s entire body.

    Hue was rarely boring.

Knapp’s a snoozer. And snoozers are generally losers.

HC ? I don’t know. But I’d definitely roll with Hue as OC over Krapp any day of the week.

Its not even close, Hue has been the best OC we had since Gruden days. But most raider fans here are very ignorant and dont get that.

Hue ra reverses, a power running game, that O was fun to watch, if only Dmac was healthy with Palmer this year, Hue would have been 2-0 at this point.

Knapp has directly been responsible for very boring play calls, that result in 3 and outs, and a bad 3rd down conversion rate.

Hurts me not to be able to talk much sh:t about my team and Oakland, but when my folks talk crazy I just take it like a man knowing where we are in the rebuilding process that seems to have taken decades. But as long as they are the Oakland Raiders I will represent. Because as long as it says Oakland in front of the Raider, they represent ME.

I’ve been reading this blog and comments for many years. A lot of you are idiots especially the ones that wished death on Al Davis. And you call yourself Raider fans. I’m just sayin.

    202. Spot on my friend. I too miss Al. Sure, he had his terrible/ bad moments, but he built this franchise, whether the haters want to admit it or not. He was a football man first, and lived through his beloved RAIDERS. I guess we’re becoming a more get along, nice and friendly franchise, which I guess is norm for todays NFL. I sincerely hope that Reg and DA get this franchise pointing in the right direction. No matter what been a Raider old fart for 32 years, and hope for the next 32 years +, we go out and dominate!

Sincerely hope that DA is not the next Shanahan. I’m not going to jump on the bandwagon and panic yet, but please just give us RAIDER FANS a glimmer of hope this Sunday, no matter who we are playing. WE ARE THE RAIDERS.
